Ice has worked hard to keep his sexuality under wraps. He can't risk rumors that might get him dishonorably discharged. But then Maverick flirts with him at the Officer's Club, and Iceman is tempted to give in. He's fascinated by the spirited aviator and just might risk it all by taking him up on the offer. Maverick, as usual, is happy to take the lead and push Ice into letting go.

I had a lot of fun with the idea for this fic, though it took me a while to get the scenes to flow right. Ice is deeply aware of the risk that his sexuality poses for his career aspirations, so he is very careful to avoid situations where someone might figure out that he's not the straight man that he pretends to be. Maverick is much less careful, as bold and brash in his interpersonal dealings as he is when flying. He makes a pass at Ice and Ice rebuffs him.

But Goose, who knows about Ice's true feelings (and the sincerity of Maverick's) and has known about Ice's sexuality since their Academy days, has a talk with Ice to sort things out. Goose reminds Ice that he's known about the sexual assault that Ice endured during their first year and has never used that knowledge against him. It's still a risk, but Ice is more receptive to Maverick's approach the second time around. Maybe it's time for Ice to really trust the men around him with his true self, as a friend and as a lover.
