The Theatre of the Oppressed: Using Performance to Challenge Injustice
The Theatre of the Oppressed is a revolutionary form of participatory theatre that began in the 1960s and 70s in Brazil. Created by visionary theatre practitioner Augusto Boal, it uses performance as a vehicle for promoting critical thinking and social and political change. At its core, the Theatre of the Oppressed aims to transform the passive audience into active “spect-actors” who can observe…

Initial Ideas & Planning
I took some time today to start planning my negotiated project before the academic year begins and I decided I'd like to use the time to explore a variety of opposing emotional concepts.
Often, making decisions is what I find most difficult so I decided to narrow-down which emotional concepts I will use for the performance project. I also decided that I want to use poetry with image theatre in order to make a literal translation of the metaphors held within the poetry.
This means that not only will the content (oppositional emotional concepts, aka. positive vs negative) be contradictory, but that the artistic materials and performance devices will also reflect the theme of contradiction. This feels so satisfying, I think probably because the artistic intentions for the aesthetics and composition of the work are very clear and compliment the content.
I am SO EXCITED to get started!!

These two pages work amazingly to show just how unfulfilling a "normal" life can be, as well as showing just how little either of them really know of whats "normal"

my les mis hot take is that the idealogical conflict between valjean and javert is much more compelling in the musical than in the brick. obviously they share the overarching idea of forgiveness vs. punishment, but hugo writes it as a very straightforward "good guy christian and bad guy atheist" whereas the musical offers, in my opinion, a much more interesting juxtaposition of worldviews. characterizing javert as devoutly religious makes their conflict that of two different interpretations of christianity: black-and-white, fire-and-brimstone legalism vs. love and forgiveness. that, to me, is what makes valjean and javert such compelling foils and parallels to one another.
