“If you all would like something to fear me for, I will give it to you. You need not worry.”
That was the last thing you said to your… ‘classmates’ at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters all those years ago. What a cruel joke that invitation must have been, an attempted olive branch that was never meant to actually flourish. Though it had not been all bad, and as much as you wanted to, even you could not pretend that was the case.
No, it wasn't all horrible. In fact, it started out quite nice. You were only 11, so you were little threat to anyone even at your strongest. And in the beginning, everyone had tried being optimistic given Agatha’s warning: to nurture is to let the light in, and to fear is to welcome the darkness. No, no one had a problem with you then. It was only when you started to age, started to strengthen, that people became weary. You're still not sure what your teachers had expected to happen when they had you training for hours each day. Were you supposed to grow weaker? If you were, that was not the best course of action.
When your powers grew is when the warning was seemingly forgotten. You could feel it, though their outward behavior did not change very much, you could feel their fear. The fear that even if they had previously been doing their best to keep the darkness from seeping in, that it would slip through the cracks they did not see. And, well, this was a crack they did not see.
Not everyone had acted this way. There were days where you could find solace in Jean, in Illyana. They did not fear you as the others did. Jean continued to train you as she usually would and Illyana kept you as her closest friend. Though she did not say it often as she was not fond of the ‘f word’, but you knew, even if she didn't say it out loud, and that was all that mattered. Illyana had been an easy friend to you, even if she was not to others. There was an understanding between the two of you, a bond between the queen of Limbo and a daughter, but even that had not been enough.
The crack only got bigger when you had started to hear the whispering, the quiet conversations between your teachers that you weren't supposed to hear. You hadn't meant to eavesdrop, because quite frankly you didn't care what any of the teachers besides Jean had to say, or so you thought. But when you heard your name mixed into what they were saying, you couldn't help the way your chest tightened. Evil. Bad news. They can feel the change in the air when you’re training. They knew they shouldn't have offered to take you in. You may be your mother's daughter, but that does not mean that their words didn't hurt or that they hurt any less.
Illyana had held you that night while you cried, cursed and mumbled in Russian about how she was going to drop their beds through portals and into Limbo while they slept that night. You had made her promise not to, you didn't want to prove them right, give them a reason to kick you out of the place you called home for the past 4 years. This, of course, made no difference. The damage had already been done, their words had wormed their way into your mind and made homes there. You were evil, you were bad news, and everyone you've come to hold dear thought so.
That night when you fell asleep was the first time you dreamt of your mother. It was the first time, even if in a dream, that you felt your mother’s comfort. She had never been present in your life, something that everyone around you had always seemed to take extra care in ensuring, and you only really knew what she looked like from photographs. You knew it was a dream, you knew she had died many years ago, but when you woke up you swore you could feel her lingering touch. However, you quickly dismissed it when Illyana sleepily grumbled that you were very cuddly when you were asleep. That lingering touch had been Illyana’s, not your dead mother’s.
You lasted one more year with your mother in your dreams and the whispers in the hallways before you snapped. Almost killing Jean Grey was something you would always regret. If you ever saw her again you would apologize, you knew it was an overreaction and you wish you’d had it in you at the time to react rationally.
You know she didn't see it coming because if she did, you're sure she would have done something to stop it. To hear the one teacher you had confided in and trusted for the past five years talk about sending you away had been devastating. It made you feel things you hadn't even thought you could. You acted before you thought, a dark green mist circling Jean before it latched onto her heart and filled her lungs. You let it all out as your hands shook in front of you, your arms straight out as your dark magic left your fingertips. Tears of anger and betrayal, humiliation, slid down your cheeks as you yelled at her. About how you trusted her, how you thought she was different.
It wasn't until Illyana had stepped in front of you, almost gotten herself hurt, that you stopped, that you realized what you were really doing. You wanted to puke as you took in the sight in front of you, Jean on her knees on the ground gasping for breath and clawing at her throat, green slowly started to fade away from her skin. Illyana looking at you with eyes widened just the slightest and a look that told you she might have sent you to Limbo if you kept going. You wanted to sob, to beg for forgiveness, tell Jean how sorry you were, tell Illyana you hadn't meant to do that. You didn't do any of those things. Instead, you said the words you would never be able to take back and began your descent into darkness.
You stand up from your desk abruptly and run your hands through your hair, your chair scraping against the floor before the wheels position themselves correctly. Now was no time to dwell on the past. What's done is done and there was nothing you could do about it now. It’s been a few years since you hid yourself from the world, 10 since you left the school, so the piece of mail sitting on your desk addressed to a name you hadn't been called in a decade is a little perplexing— and a little nostalgic in a way you weren't expecting.
You haven't opened it yet, perhaps you wish it would just disappear. The lack of sender address is equally as perplexing as the name it's addressed to. Who could have possibly found you? You'd lived up to your words to the mutants in this past decade, they had feared you and for good reason. You had only grown stronger in your absence. “Am I frightened of a piece of paper? God, I’ve grown weak,” you muse to yourself before you pick the envelope up off the desk.
You rip it open like you would if you were taking off a bandage, quick and nervous. Inside of the envelope is what looks like a photo of a page in an old book and a small note. You can't read the script of the book, but for some reason you feel like you know what it says and you feel the magic in your veins hum in a way that isn't pleasant or unpleasant. The note reads as follows and there is an address on the back:
Dearest daughter (or as close as it gets),
I know I have been absent these past years, but I must let you know that the prophecy has begun. Will you fulfill it or will you change your future? You may not like working with a team, but a teammate is necessary to overcome that which you were meant for. For better or for worse, you and the Scarlet Witch are bound. Only you can decide to let the light in again. Perhaps you will use this address for good.
— Agatha
Seeing that name again makes your heart stop for just a moment and you drop the note on the desk. You want to be mad at her, you want to be angry, you want to feel how you did with Jean because you know it's justified this time. You want to be angry because Agatha left you. She took you to that school and she left you! She's a coward and she dropped you off and never looked back. But you can't be mad because you know she thought she was doing what was best, sending you somewhere with other kids like you. Somewhere you could be protected from your mother and her influence. But you can't help but think that she could have done the same thing that the Xavier school had. She had magic and she could have trained you and kept you on the right path, she could have fixed you before you were even broken.
You find yourself getting caught in the past again and you bury your face in your hands, dropping back down into your chair and groaning loudly. “Why must you drag me into things like this?” You wonder aloud, not that Agatha could respond or anyone for that matter. You are quite alone right now, as you have been for a few years.
You could ignore it entirely, you had no obligation to listen to Agatha. After all, apparently she has had your address all this time and hasn't bothered to come visit. But you can't ignore the humming in your veins and the gnawing feelings at the back of your head that this is something you must do. You wouldn't call it a moral compass, but you've developed an unfortunate want to do things that balance your darkness with light these past few years, it was getting on your nerves.
You pick the note back up and look at the address on the back. The Avenger’s tower? You suppose that's where you'll have to go to find the Scarlet Witch.

Considering the way that she got her new outfit in Vita Ayala's New Mutants is kind of a Sailor Moon/Magi(k)cal (hah) girl send up, I could totally imagine Illyana getting super into Sailor Moon as a young girl. Seeing girls around her age with similar magical powers without the associated trauma could give her a way to ignore her problems for a little while, and imagine herself in the role of Usagi, fighting evil with her friends (Kitty and the New Mutants) and a cute animal sidekick (Lockheed) without any of the pesky Limbo stuff. And even into her twenties she watches every reboot and does an annual rewatch of the original, which would influence how she manifested her new uniform.
It's also very cute to imagine her buying merch and trying to hide that she likes the traditionally 'girly' show from her friends and family, but she has the whole manga print run on a bookshelf somewhere.

Illyana Rasputin in Midnight Suns #1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That tracks for how I imagine Illyana being in front of a classroom. Protecting or saving children? Any day of the week. But keeping a classload of them calm and paying attention? I can’t see that going well for her or the students.
I like this art style much better than the cover. Very nice Illyana. Also Nico.

That’s right, Dessy, you’re a demon from Limbo, you have standards. Avengers, hah!
…Although that whole “demon from Limbo who’s practically a regular girl”-thing has never been addressed to my satisfaction. That’s never been how Limbo demons worked. I guess hell dimensions do reflect their ruler in form and function, so I suppose Illyana’s Limbo birthing a demon girl who just wants to be good kinda makes sense as an expression of Illyana’s subconscious wishes… Crap, I wanted to rant about badly thought out continuity, but I think I accidentally made myself okay with it and came up with a plot point that I really want to see explored…

The New Mutants Film is an Offensive Trash Fire
It’s done! Check out my video on the so-called New Mutants film adaptation. (Even if you’ve never read the any of the New Mutants comics, I explain everything you need to know about the characters!)
English subs included.
(Full script below)
I am an astronomically huge fan of the New Mutants comics, especially the classic and current volumes. In particular, Dani Moonstar is my favourite Marvel hero of all time; as a woman-aligned Indigenous person, she means the world to me. So to say I’m disappointed in the so-called New Mutants film adaptation of 2020 would be an understatement. I’m not disappointed; I am disgusted by just how offensive this film is, both in general and specifically in regards to calling itself a New Mutants film. At this point, I’m pretty sure the pent-up rage I have directed at this film can only be exhausted by talking about it. So, here we are.
The film features five of the core nine New Mutants from the classic comics. Well, at least in name. There’s Dani Moonstar, Roberto da Costa, Sam Guthrie, Illyana Rasputin, and Rahne Sinclair. Members of the team not included are Xi’an Coy Manh, Amara Aquilla, Doug Ramsey, and Warlock. Julio Richter and Tabitha Smith join the team late in the series as well, but are not typically regarded as core members. Xi’an is notably the only one of the Original Five missing from the film, instead replaced with Illyana, despite even being the team’s first leader. Imagine making an Original Five X-Men film with Wolverine instead of Cyclops… But right now, let’s compare the five characters in the comics to their film counterparts.
Dani Moonstar, AKA Mirage, is a Cheyenne girl from Colorado. Originally her power-set was limited to manifesting illusions of the deepest fears of a person, though as the Classic New Mutant series unfolds this evolves to include any illusion she can think of. In Classic X-Force, her powers evolve further and she learns to conjure psychic arrows that paralyze their targets in fear; a skill she still frequently uses in modern comics. Oh, and she also becomes a Valkyrie who can sense death. Because of her struggle managing her illusions when her powers first developed, Dani spent her time in isolation, with only her grandfather as company after her parents mysteriously disappeared. (Spoiler alert: They were eaten by a demon bear.) Then her grandfather is murdered, too, leading Dani to reluctantly go to Xavier’s school. Dani can come off as abrasive and rebellious, because she is very iron-willed and has a strong sense of her own morality. From the very moment she joins the team, she is not afraid to challenge even Professor Xavier. These traits are part of what make her a great team leader, which is the role she plays for the majority of the Classic New Mutants run. But for all her outward confidence, deep inside, she struggles with a desire for people to like her.
Dani develops a particularly strong relationship with Rahne in the comics; they call themselves soulmates and share a telepathic bond when Rahne is in her wolf form. However, in modern comics they drift apart, and it’s only very recently that they’re starting to get close again. In the film, they overtly become a couple.
Dani barely has any agency in the film. She’s like your typical soft-spoken new girl in a CW high school drama, where things happen to her, but it’s never really about her. I can’t really identify a personality for her, because she has none. I feel it’s also worth pointing out that, when paired with the racist casting of Henry Zaga as Roberto—which we’ll get to in a minute—it’s highly suspect that they also decided to cast a light-skinned Native actress to play a dark-skinned Native character. What makes it more suspect is that their other choice was True O’Brien, who is not Native. Josh Boone openly confirmed to having a casting call open to non-Natives for Dani in the same interview where he defended the racist casting for Roberto. I refuse to pat them on the back for Dani’s casting when there was so much bullshit behind the scenes, and when paired with flat out racist casting elsewhere in the film.
Roberto da Costa, AKA Sunspot and often called ‘Berto or Bobby, is an Afro-Brazilian boy who is established in New Mutants #2 to be the youngest of the group, at just thirteen years old. He has solar-powered super strength, and when using his powers, his body turns into complete shadow. Mutant abilities often appear for the first time in stressful situations, and in Bobby’s case, his powers manifested in the middle of a soccer game, when assaulted by racist players on the other team. If this isn’t traumatic enough, he then lost his girlfriend when she jumped in front of a bullet for him. Juliana’s death has haunted Roberto ever since. Because nothing can be easy for ‘Berto, to top everything off, this kid has major daddy issues. Rightfully so, given his father decided to join the Hellfire Club; arguably the X-Men’s second-most famous enemies, only behind the Brotherhood. And boy, do they ever want Roberto to join them. (Spoiler alert: They eventually get what they want.) Roberto acts like he’s the coolest kid on the block in public, while in private struggles deeply with, well, everything I just said. He can be a bit of a hot head, who like Dani is not afraid to challenge authority, especially if it’s in the name of sticking up for his friends. Roberto is extremely loyal to those he cherishes. He is also a huge Magnum PI fan, and yes, that is a defining trait of his personality.
Just like Dani and Rahne’s strong relationship, Roberto and Sam become extremely close, too. Unlike Dani and Rahne, they stay a great team. In modern comics, Roberto and Sam both join the Avengers for a time together, with ‘Berto becoming the leader of one of the branch-off teams, even. Quite an accomplishment for a kid who Xavier once wrote an entire report on the likeliness of becoming a supervillain.
In the comics, Roberto’s father is Black and his mother is white, and he himself has dark skin like his father. He makes his way through the world with a number of labels; Black, Latino, Mutant, and it gets complicated for him sometimes. In the film, the so-called Roberto da Costa is played by a Brazilian actor, yes, but he is not Afro-Brazilian. Director Josh Boone defended his choice of casting Zaga to play a Black character, saying, “I didn’t care so much about the racism I’ve heard about in Brazil, about light-skinned versus dark-skinned. To me, it was I wanted to represent Brazil in a positive way and I wanted to find somebody who seems like he could look like a guy who’s had the silver spoon in his mouth, who has like a really rich dad and [Henry] just exemplified all these things.” No amount of Brazilian identity that Zaga has within him can make up for the fact that he is not Afro-Brazilian like Roberto. No amount of Zaga “looking rich”, whatever that means, can make up for the fact that he is not Afro-Brazilian like Roberto. No amount of denial that racism exists in Brazil can make up for the fact that Zaga is not Afro-Brazilian like Roberto. Roberto is of African descent. Zaga is not. It is the complete and total erasure of a crucial part of the character’s story, and who he represents. It’s racist casting. The racism is enough to end the discussion, but oh, the butchering of this character doesn’t even end there… Roberto in the film is an asshole. The one character he isn’t a jerk towards is Sam, so at least they got a small sliver of their comic bond in there. But it’s a pathetically small sliver. What really gets me though, is they completely changed his powers! They switched his powers with Amara’s in the comics! What the fuck? They did this just so that they could say he was responsible for killing his girlfriend, because he got too hot and burned her. Oh my god. //Sighs
Sam Guthrie, AKA Cannonball, is the eldest child in a huge family, born and raised in Kentucky. When his father died from black lung, sixteen-year-old Sam dropped out of school for the coal mines himself to support his mother and siblings. On his first shift though, the mine collapsed, and Sam’s powers manifested. He has the ability to basically turn himself into a human rocket, which includes being “nigh invulnerable when blastin’”, as he is sure to not let anyone forget. Sam pretty easily slips into a big brother-ish role, probably because he’s used to having a group of younger siblings hanging around him. Sam cares about being seen as respectful and responsible more than any of the others, though does not always succeed. He also tries to maintain a cheerful and hopeful attitude. While Sam is a little too insecure and unsure of himself to be much of a leader at first, by the time of Classic X-Force, he really steps into his own and becomes a pretty solid one.
While Sam’s background is mostly accurate to the comics in his film, the difference being that in the film he is the reason for the mine’s collapse and his father’s death, personality wise, he is very angsty. At one point he cries in front of a mirror and then uses his powers to knock himself out. Rahne observes that Sam uses his powers to hurt himself a lot. Not sure how, when he’s supposed to be nigh invulnerable when blastin’. He spends the film beat to shit because of this.
Illyana Rasputin, AKA Magik, is the younger sister of X-Men member Colossus, born in Russia but was sucked into the other dimension Limbo as a child. While only seconds past on earth, seven years went by in Limbo, where she was raised by the demonic sorcerer Belasco as his apprentice. At age fourteen, she rebelled against Belasco and became the new ruler of Limbo. Returning to earth as a teenager, she joins the New Mutants. Illyana has the power to teleport herself and others through time and space, though she must always pass through Limbo to do so. She is also a master sorcerer, and wields her iconic soulsword. Illyana has a tendency to self-isolate and spiral into a session of self-hate, believing herself to be inherently evil because of her traumatic time in Limbo. She is slow to trust others and let them into her inner thoughts, feeling like she needs to tackle everything alone, but over time comes to greatly appreciate the support of her friends. When she’s not in a depressive state, she has a mischievous and playful spirit.
While in the comics, Dani is the first member of the New Mutants that Illyana comes to truly trust, in the film, Illyana is a racist bitch for some reason. She’s also portrayed as being this aloof nutcase that talks to a puppet version of Kitty’s dragon in the comics, Lockheed. Instead of being taken by Belasco, she was taken by a group only referred to as the Smiling Men. Who are the Smiling Men, you are probably wondering? Who the fuck knows! It’s never explained! Limbo is a place she created herself, though the details of that are also never explained.
Finally, there’s Rahne Sinclair, AKA Wolfsbane, who was raised by the horribly abusive Reverend Craig in Scotland. The Reverend instilled in her a belief that any abnormality was sinful. Fast-forward to Rahne developing the mutant power to turn into a wolf, or a hybrid state between human and wolf, and the Reverend led the town in a deadly chase after her with guns and torches, branding her as a witch. Rahne was shot, but saved and patched up by Moira McTaggart from X-Men fame. Rahne comes to see Moira as a mother-figure she never had. Rahne is a sweet and innocent girl who tries to think the best of everyone except herself. Rahne believes that her mutant powers are a curse from the devil, and that she is being punished for wickedness inside her. For a long time, this is her most defining trait. It takes years of character development for her to come out of this line of thinking, but eventually she does. Unfortunately, some writers, like Peter David, forget this character development, and in modern comics decide to write Rahne as a religious zealot whose only purpose is to cause homophobic drama at the expense of Rictor and Shatterstar. Yes, that’s right. Rahne is a homophobe who thought Shatterstar was stealing Rictor’s soul by turning him gay.
Rahne is a homophobe, but the film decided to put her in a Sapphic relationship with Dani. While at the same time, completely excluding the canonical lesbian character, Xi’an. (Who, might I add, also has a lot of romantic chemistry with Dani in the comics. Because Dani is so obviously very gay too, and that’s the hill I will die on.) But I digress.
Rahne’s film counterpart is easily the closest to her comic self of the bunch, both backstory wise and personality wise. But that’s not saying much.
There is one other character featured in the film, but she’s not a character from the New Mutants comics. She is an X-Man, Cecilia Reyes. I’m not overly familiar with Cecilia like I am the other characters here, but I know damn well enough that she’s not a villain. I do not know why on earth Josh Boone decided to make her such, when he could have used plenty of other characters in her place. Or hell, just made up a new one. Cecilia is also a Black woman, which Alice Braga is not. So, yeah, more racist casting. I’m starting to suspect Boone has something against darker skin…
But, back to the New Mutants. In case you didn’t pick up on the thread linking all them together, these are some seriously traumatized teens. It doesn’t end there. Xi’an lost her parents in the Vietnamese war and was raped by pirates when trying to flee to the US. Amara was almost killed in a sacrificial ritual by Selene, only saved when her powers manifested. Warlock fled to earth because his father wants to kill him. Julio was kidnapped and tortured by an anti-mutant militia known as The Right. Tabitha grew up in an abusive household until she ran away from home, living on the streets for some time. Trauma is basically the requirement to be a New Mutant. Doug is the only member who doesn’t have anything dark going on… up until he fucking dies. This is what separates the New Mutant comics from other young superhero teams. They’ve never been afraid to get serious, tackling things like abuse, suicide, rape, drugs, child death… So I can’t say I’m surprised that the so-called New Mutants film also attempts to do something a bit darker. Tone-wise, it would have been fitting if it was at all competent. Unfortunately, it starts and ends with the tone, because everything else about the story is just awful.
The film opens with a racist fake “Native American proverb”, giving you a taste of what’s to come. Then we’re thrown into a chaotic scene where Dani’s reservation is destroyed and everyone is killed, while she alone escapes. The scene transitions to Dani waking up handcuffed to a hospital bed, which she drags around the room while looking around in what is I’m pretty sure supposed to be comical but actually quite disturbing imagery.
We’re introduced to Dr. Reyes, who confirms to Dani that she is the sole survivor of her community and that Dani is a mutant. She then explains that there are other kids in the facility they’re in, built for troubled young mutants. Dani wants to leave, but Reyes says she will not allow it until she assesses Dani is not a danger.
We meet the other new mutants in group therapy. Dani’s first introduction to the group is Roberto laughing at her name, then saying she’s probably addicted to drugs and sex.
So, just to be clear, we’re ten minutes in and we’ve got a fake Native quote, the mass destruction of an entire Native community, the kidnapping of a young Native girl forced into containment in a school-like facility, making fun of said Native girl’s surname, and assumption that said Native girl has addiction struggles and sexualizing her. Gotcha.
Reyes asks Illyana to show Dani around the school, and Illyana reluctantly agrees, but makes it clear she hates Dani for no apparent reason, other than that she’s racist I suppose. Dani decides to make a break for it, but finds out the hard way that there’s a force-field surrounding the facility. Illyana laughs and teleports away.
Apparently Rahne can teleport now too, because she goes from watching Dani climb the clock tower from the ground with the intention of committing suicide, to magically appearing behind her. Rahne talks Dani out of it, and they spend the rest of the day together gossiping about the others.
Dani has nightmares about the destruction of her community. This triggers her powers, and Sam is sucked into an illusion that he’s back in the mines he worked in.
Dani finally stands up for herself when Illyana hurls racist insults again. Illyana jokes that Dani’s father sexually abused her, so Dani steals Illyana’s puppet and the two get in a fight. Reyes shows up just before Illyana attacks Dani with her soulsword, then puts both of them in solitary confinement. Yes, both of them, for some reason.
We get a brief flashback to Illyana as a child, insinuating that she herself was sexually abused by a group she calls the Smiling Men. Again, we know absolutely nothing about these fuckers.
Meanwhile, Dani’s powers activate through the night again, this time giving herself a nightmare of a demonic bear.
Reyes takes blood samples and reminds Dani that she’s dangerous, and that’s why she’s being locked up, until they can figure out how to control her powers.
Rahne enters the empty confession booth of the chapel and starts listing out her so-called sins, when an illusion takes over where she hears the voice of Reverend Craig calling her a witch.
The group of new mutants sneak up to the attic, where they start playing with a lie detector test. They ask Roberto how many girls he’s been with, and he gets caught lying. Sam takes a turn and talks about his father dying. Dani tells a story about a demon bear her father told her when she was little. Illyana reveals she killed 18 men. This is supposed to be a character development scene, I think?
In the next group session, Sam asks why he can’t go home, and spirals into talking about his nightmares. He ends up storming out.
That night, Illyana says she spiked the tea Reyes was drinking—no, we don’t know how she accomplished this—so the new mutants have a party through the house. Sam reveals to Roberto that he killed his father and crew in the mines. Rahne and Dani sneak outside to lay down and watch the rain’s effect on the barrier. They share a kiss. Roberto and Illyana also share a kiss in the pool, but then Roberto starts steaming up. He explains that he accidentally burned his girlfriend to death. It turns out that this Illyana was just an illusion, and she morphs into his dead girlfriend. This triggers Roberto’s powers to activate. Which again, I will remind you, are actually Amara’s powers. Sunspot has super-strength, not fire. What are you doing, Boone? Reyes puts him out by pushing him into the pool, which I will remind you he was just in before and had no effect at all, and then puts Illyana back in solitary confinement for spiking her drink.
The next day, Reyes begins medical experimentation on Dani, triggering Dani to have visions of young mutants being trained as soldiers. She has a breakdown and her powers surface again, creating illusions for Illyana and Rahne. This time the illusions take hard form, and Rahne is branded with another witch mark on her neck by the summoned Reverend. Illyana figures out its Dani doing all this and attacks her, dragging her to Limbo. Dani uses her powers to scare Illyana into letting her go, and Reyes knocks Illyana out with a sedative.
Dani brings the puppet Lockheed back to Illyana. They bond a little bit, teaching the audience that if you’re nice to racists, they will magically get better!
Reyes gets a notification from her superior with instructions to collect further DNA samples from Dani, and then kill her. It’s revealed that she’s working for the Essex Corporation, a nod to Mister Sinister that will never be fulfilled. At the same time, Dani tells Rahne that she suspects there are ulterior motives behind the facility.
Despite this, she allows Reyes to take her to an underground lab for some reason, where Reyes compares Dani to a feral dog that needs to be put down. While this is happening, Illyana and Sam are chased by another illusion of Illyana’s Smiling Men. Rahne uses her super wolf hearing to find Dani’s location. She attacks Reyes and saves Dani from the brink of death.
Illyana teleports away, and Sam uses his own powers to plow through the men. He meets up with Roberto who is furiously trying to get outside. They reunite with Illyana, who teleports back to them wielding her sword. The whole group meet up in Reyes’ office, while she herself tries to flee. The new mutants decide to kill Reyes as the only way of escape.
Rahne uses her powers to track Reyes down, and the group confront her about Essex Corp. Reyes uses her force-field powers on all of them, and says she will let them go if they surrender Dani, because Dani needs to die. But then the outer barrier is breached somehow by Dani’s demon bear that eats Reyes in what is easily the funniest scene in the film.
The demon bear continues its attack, but Dani won’t wake up. Illyana orders the others to take Dani away while she attacks, because we’re supposed to see her as a #girlboss now. Also, Lockheed is a real dragon, suddenly. No explanation is given for that, either, folks!
Rahne tries to wake Dani up while the others fight off the demon bear, and it finally works after Dani dreams of her father encouraging her. She confronts the demon bear and manages to soothe it out of existence.
The film ends with the new mutants leaving the facility, and a second voice over of the racist fake Native proverb again. Jesus fucking Christ.
So, yeah. A messy plot with pacing issues, bland characters, unanswered questions, and racism. This is what the film turned the New Mutants into. Not that there isn’t racism in the classic comics too, mind you. It’s in there, but the comics have the excuse of being dated, whereas this film does not. This film should know better. Josh Boone should know better.
So, what’s an alternative? Call me crazy, but why not simply adapt from the original graphic novel? No, I’m not crazy, because The Old Guard proved you can please comic fans and new fans alike by doing just that. The original New Mutants graphic novel is a prime target for adaptation, because it’s a perfect set up in terms of establishing the characters and tone in an easy to follow story. Which is what you want from a starting point to a potential new series. The filmmakers would only have to make moderate changes, like adding in Xi’an’s backstory since she was established prior to the graphic novel, for example.
In terms of what we have, there is no comic book story equivalent to whatever the fuck this film was trying to go for. No, I refuse to call it the demon bear arc just because the demon bear is present, any more than to call X-Men Origins: Wolverine a proper telling of Wolverine’s origin story simply because Weapon X is involved. Not that I’d want the demon bear arc adapted anyway. That racism present in the comics I mentioned? Yeah, prime example. But this is just Josh Boone’s fanfiction. And I’d be fine with that, really, if it wasn’t done so fucking poorly.
I hate this film to its fucking core, and Boone can meet me in the pit.
Anyways, read the comics. They’re so much better.

Beware the Demon Bear! (New Mutants Review)
Hello, welcome to the House of Milesverse
This year, we saw the release of the satire (but actually based on a REAL story) film Cocaine Bear. Naturally, it led to a variety of memes and jokes about the titular character. Funnily enough, this year I also got to read a book about another evil bear.
Tumblr media
That's right, folks!
Today? We will be talking about the Demon Bear Saga!
Who are the New Mutants?
Tumblr media
The New Mutants was a graphic novel released in September 1982, created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. Eventually in 1983, the New Mutants would gain their own book. The group focused on a young team of mutant students assembled by Charles Xavier.
The original roster was composed of Mirage (Dani Moonster), Karma (Manh Cao Xuan), Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair), Cannonball (Sam Guthrie), and Sunspot (Roberto Da Costa). Other members would join the team as well. This includes Cypher (Douglas Ramsey), the extraterrestrial Warlock, and Magik (Illyana Rasputin), who was the younger sister of Colossus.
The New Mutants' started out as a lighthearted story for X-Men fans. The inclusion of the Demon Bear saga kickstarts a serious adventure for the team. Luckily, our grizzly friend provides us with an interesting narrative.
The Bear Necessities for a Story
Tumblr media
One character central to Demon Bear's mythology is Danielle Moonstar. She is a young Cheyenne girl with psychic powers. In particular, Dani has the ability to create strong illusions.
Dani believes that the Demon Bear is responsible for her parent's deaths. The large ursine creature wants to kill Dani. He spends a good deal of the saga trying to get to her.
In fact, Dani tries to face the demon bear herself but is wounded. She is sent to the hospital, accompanied by her friends. The other members of the New Mutants try their best to deal with the Demon Bear.
Unfortunately, this is not enough, and it drags them to another dimension. In an unfamiliar environment, the bear temporarily gets the upper hand. In the end, Magik uses her soulsword to defeat the demon bear, reverting it to its original form.
The demon bear's 'original' form was actually Dani's parents. Something had twisted the two into this monster. Dani eventually wakes up and is able to reunite with her parents.
Danielle Moonstar: Our Main Protagonist
Tumblr media
There is a lot to say about Danielle Moonstar as a character. Throughout the story, she is distressed about the Demon Bear's arrival. The beast stalks her nightmares, and she is clearly afraid of them.
In spite of that? Dani does her best to try and stop it. She faces off against the Demon Bear alone. Even though she loses, she still tries to kill it.
That quality, facing your fear even if it means certain death, makes her a worthy X-Man.
The Demon Bear is a WORTHY enemy.
Tumblr media
I think the Demon Bear on its own presents a pretty scary threat. Can you imagine being in Magik's position? She's being hunted by this bear that wants to maim her. Heck, it goes through the troubles of infiltrating a hospital just to finish the job.
Tumblr media
I think the Demon Bear's best feature however is its design. The bear feels so familiar and yet so different. The wonky art style really sells the Demon Bear and how otherworldly it is.
Right here, you see the Demon Bear's abilities. The creature has the ability to corrupt the minds, souls, and bodies of its victims. A police officer and a nurse are unfortunately cursed to become his minions.
It's even weirder afterward because the Demon Bear's defeat does not undo it. Both the sheriff and the nurse are permanently transformed into Native Americans.
As I mentioned before, it has the power to transport others into another dimension. It sent the New Mutants to the Badlands where it could do battle. That was also where it utilized it's minions.
Let's face it, Magik's kind of badass.
Tumblr media
As I said, Magik is the younger sister of Piotr Rasputin, aka Colossus. She's a member of the New Mutants, one of the primary magic aids of the X-Men, and the occasional Queen of Limbo. Magik strikes fear in the hearts of her enemies with her vicious soulsword, a manifestation of her mystical powers.
Ultimately, Magik comes in handy against the similarly-mystical Demon Bear. She manages to undo the Demon Bear's twisted transformation, stopping the creature's rampage. It's awesome to see how Magik's able to help the team in the story.
Tumblr media
Fun fact, but did you know that in an alternate universe, she would succeed Doctor Strange as Sorcerer Supreme? She even gets the cloak. Even now, she works as a teacher for the Strange Academy.
Conclusion: The New Mutants kind of rule?
The Demon Bear Saga actually made an X-fan of me. Of course, long before I read this, I at least liked some of the members. However, now I just want to sink my teeth into other well-written X-Men stories.
Honestly, I love the vibe of stories that mix superheroes and horror. It combines two of my favorite genres. In fact, this saga has the perfect blend between the two. While it may read as a horror movie in certain parts, it still presents the dynamic superhero action we've come to enjoy.
Overall, I hope you enjoyed House of Milesverse! I'll be back again with another X-Ceptional, Astonishing, and Uncanny discussion!

Moment of Awesome - Arthur Centino/Longshot:
At the District X Halloween event, Arthur encounters a newly-returned Illyana Rasputin.
The man's grin flashed, "I know plenty of things, and one of them is where to find the best cake tonight. You're in luck."
There was a clang and a clatter behind Ilyanna to punctuate this statement, and the brief flash of something not quite human shaped running across the welcome courtyard. Whatever it was, it caught his attention enough to lead toward a distracted glance away from the Center's guest. "Huh. Costumes get more creative every year."
Illyana recognized the brief glimpse of purple and red. She hadn't brought any of the lesser demons topside with her, but this was a good night for that particular one. "Trickster imps. Mostly a nuisance, they're obnoxious about holidays like this. They'll probably make a mess, get hopped up on consuming the chaos energy." All of this was said matter-of-factly, as if demons running around was a perfectly normal sight.
"I suppose all children are sometimes imps. Little demons." The man seemed stuck on the rest of that statement, however, as if he was unsure exactly how to proceed on whether she knew that child or how casually she considered them "obnoxious." This only lasted a second, though, before he chucked that inconvenient and worrisome thought into a bin and tapped near his left eye conspiratorially. "Don't worry, you have me! I'm anti-chaos, certified — well, in one dimension. I'm Arthur."
"Yes..." Illyana responded somewhat hesitantly. Probably best to let Arthur keep his idea of children instead of literal demons tonight. She'd make sure they were rounded up tomorrow if they'd decided to linger. "I am Lyana." Well, a partial truth. She'd pronounced it with a bit of a rush, the sound coming out more 'Lana' than 'Yana', but it was sufficiently close to not repeat herself. "Only one dimension? How many have you been in?"
"One more than I imagined, let me tell you, Lana." He somehow managed to pronounce her name exactly as she had said it, rushed and all. Yet his genuine energy invited absolutely no doubt that this "Arthur" would dream of lying. "But I'm the worst host. What did you need to know?"
Illyana shook her head. "Nothing that can't wait for my contact tomorrow," she replied honestly. A slight jostle from behind alerted her to the small line starting to form, and she gave Arthur a small, genuine smile, drawn in by the bright energy he radiated. She handed over another crumpled bill. "Another worm cake, please? It was nice to meet you."
"Consider it my pleasure, Yana. I've always been more for treats vs. tricks." He handed her two gummy cakes, just for good measure, with a wink. "Happy Halloween.”

warnings:
a/n: lesbian!reader
requested by @xxxtwilightaxelxxx
“Wait, wait, y/n, look over there!” Illyana stopped dead in her tracks and pointed her attention to the loud, colorful crowd somewhere down the road. “You don’t think it’s..?” She cocked an eyebrow at you and watched your dreamy smile creep onto your face.
“It would make sense, my love.” You grasped her hand and led her along to the commotion, which happened to be a Pride parade, just as you’d hoped. Neither of you had seen one in person before, and it was so refreshing to do so. Two girlfriends amongst the people that would support them for who they were, it was beautiful.
“Oh! Look, y/n! They have little flags! One for me and one for you.” She plucked the complementary flags from the basket and handed you the lesbian one while she began waving the bisexual one in the air. You two follow the parade along, filled with glee you got to experience this with her. Then you leaned in for a kiss before the active crowd and whispered:
“I love you so much.”

Part 1
══════════✧══════════
Ever since you and Illyana had became an item, that's when the treatment became worse.
"They are the weirdest thing that's come to this hospital." Illyana's lips pursed with distate, her nose scrunched when she'd caught your figure shaking with what she could only assume was childish glee.
You, so enraptured in your own world, didn't quite care for the unwanted attention you were being served. Your lips tilted upwards in delight of your own creation, how lovely it was that you almost wanted to show everyone. Almost.
Out came a defensive, yet gentle voice, harbored by a boy with an awkward stature and tired eyes that rivaled a rotting corpse.
"They haven't done anything bad, I don't get why you hate them so much." Sam Guthrie, not much was notable about this boy, only that he was locked up in this prison you lot had to call home, and that he was a mutant, much like the rest of you.
"Can't you see it?" Illyana grimaced as her glare drank in your features like a forbidden elixir. Your smile, your bashful demeanor when you presented your creations to one of your comrades, Dani. "They're Reyes' favorite little dollface."
"I think you're the only one that calls them that, but alright." Sam exhaled to fight back the death stare Illyana had thrown at him before she went back to looking at you.
He could see it. She knew he could, and she hated it. Sam could see the green kissing at Illyana's eyes. He wished mercy upon anyone who made it glow greener.
Illyana had bet that you didn't notice the splotches on your clothes, your arms. Your cheek. Something about that made her face contort in annoyance.
"Hey, I've always wondered," said Dani Moonstar, one of of the only people that made you feel like you could slouch beside without any cruel judgement. "What is your ability?"
"I'll tell you but it's a secret," you made your way to Dani's ear and whispered one of the biggest mysteries in the hospital you all resided in.
Illyana peered from afar with feelings unknown brewing in her stomach as Dani's eyes grew in wonder. It was Dani's echoing gasp that had Illyana dreaming of her demise. With balled fists Illyana sauntered up to the two of you, bearing a smile so fake it was comparable to the doll in your hand.
Correction, the doll that was in your hand. Illyana snatched it without a single care for the gasp that had slipped past your lips.
"Give that back, Illyana." You shifted as if to dig yourself further into the couch at the sight of Illyana's figure, that which crept closer at a hauntingly slow pace.
"Why?" Illyana chuckled under false resolve, "it's just a shit little doll anyway. Wouldn't take much to break it."
"It doesn't matter, they told you to put it down." Dani, who noticed your discomfort long before you'd even moved, placed a hand on your shoulder to ease you.
"Are you really going to let the trainwreck stand up for you?" Illyana moved her face terribly close to yours, so much so that you felt as though you couldn't breathe.
"I remember when you weren't nearly as much of a coward as you are now." She huffed, "what a resounding disappointment."
"Fuck off." Your eyes stayed glued to Illyana's gaze.
"Yes," she leapt back, a cheeky grin playing at her lips. Accent thick, and growing in excitement. "You'd like that wouldn't you?"
Illyana faced away from you for a moment, such an oddity the action was that you found your head tilted in confusion.
"If only you knew," your eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets when Illyana threw the doll to the floor. Your perception of time appeared to have slowed as you watched in horror.
"how much I love pissing you off."
Crack. The doll was in pieces. And in that moment you could sense the life of the toy dissipate. As Illyana stomped on it with a crooked smile, what once was a solid creature quickly turned to mush under the seperation of your abilities.
"Oh shit!" Chuckled Illyana, kicking off the excess on her shoes. "Didn't expect that—"
What she also didn't expect, was for you to shove her to the floor, she'd fallen back on her behind. A low grunt brushing past her teeth.
"Oh shit- Doctor!" Dani rushed out of the room with a panicked expression. Leaving just the two of you alone for the moment.
Illyana wiped her face and forced a grin, "you want me so bad, don't you?" She licked her lips. A new found confidence glistening in her eyes, "I can tell."
"I hate you, Rasputin." You held your guard up. And yet, she could see right through that half-hearted facade. "These games, I'm sick of them."
"They're necessary." Illyana replied, sitting on one knee. Tone surprisingly calm and tender, her eyes engulfed you as if you were the only person in the universe. "My Love. They're so, so necessary."
"Why?"
"You'll understand," Illyana winked, "it's not all bad."
The sound of footsteps soon approached. In seeing your gaze shift from her to your new company, Illyana took it as an opportunity to fake up a grin.
"Illyana," Cecilia Reyes, the doctor of Milsbury, sheathed a sharp glare at the blonde sword bearer in front of you. "Because of your outlandish behaviour, this is another hour added onto our sessions."
"Oh and I bet Trainwreck here didn't tell you that they pushed me." Illyana fumed. It almost awed you how good she was at being fake.
"The walls have eyes, Illyana." Cecilia murmured with a fixed expression, the look of bewilderment that once painted her features long forgotten.
Illyana was aware, so painfully aware of how true Cecilia's statement was. The countless nights where she was tempted to envelope her lips with yours and drown out the morbidity of her living situation. The nightmares that clawed at the back of her mind, they seized when she was with you.
"Don't I know it." Illyana spared a glare towards you before leaving without even a trace of another word from her lips. Dont I know it.
The day had yet to meet its end and yet you could very well assume it did due to the deafening silence that loomed through the building of the Milsbury hospital. A devilish temptation brewed within the hospitals inhabitants to break that silence. Especially that of Illyana.
"Did you have to break the doll?" You traced your fingers delicately over your newest creation, which took the form of a clay figure, its form reminiscent of a jeweled royal.
"It was tacky anyway." Illyana attempted to jest as she took calculated steps towards you, the act, as Illyana imagined it to be— was similar to a cat readying itself to pounce on an unsuspecting bird. The unsettling implications aside, such a comparison brought a smile to her lips.
"Doesn't matter I needed them for my powers." Your tongue pushed out your cheek from the inside, brows contorted. Your eyes never left the focal point of which it had drawn onto Illyana's figure. A sense of weariness felt and shown from the way your back took purchase to the cold wall behind you.
"See this is your problem." A whine halted in Illyana's throat as she sauntered up to you and took to sitting uncomfortably close. "Just pay attention to me.. just for a bit."
Your knees forced themselves to hug your chest as a means of hiding away, an action that you hadn't caught, Illyana's eyes flickered at the movement.
"I'll be nicer.. but you do know why I do this, don't you?..." Without another beat she copied your body language, knees snug to her chest, hands hung loosely over them, even the way she began fiddling with her fingers seemed to reflect you.
The one thing she couldn't copy however, was the pounding of your anxious heart.
"If Reyes finds out we're in love, she'll take you from me." Her forehead gently met yours in a tenderness you'd almost forgot she possessed. "I can't have that, I cannot lose you."
Silence reared its head and made small effort in soothing your quickened heartbeat.
"Fine, I get it— I do," You laced your fingers with Illyana's. Not missing the way her cheeks radiated a warmth once absent,
And also the way her eyes stared down at your lips.
"You really want to make it up to me?" A hint of a spark found home in the galaxy of Illyana's eyes.
"Yes."
"and you really want my attention?"
"More than anything." Illyana's eyes closed under the temptation of her lips finally meeting yours. But you weren't about to make it that easy for her.
"Then roll your sleeves up and help me fix my doll." You swayed to the side, Illyana accidentally kissed your throat, and the spark that had resided in her died down.
A smile took its place. "You're going to make me work for it, Love?"
"Damn right."

Jennifer Kale and not Illyana Rasputin in X-Force #85
So this is not Illyana who Dani visits when in need of mystical assistance, but a different blond witchy woman. Still it’s so easy to imagine that if Illyana hadn’t been de-aged but had left the New Mutants/X-Force for different reasons, this is how they might’ve brought her back to the team—living her best life studying magic in peace and ready to help her friends if they call.
Dani hangs out with Jennifer again later, so she clearly misses having a magical bestie.

ILLYANA:  THE SOUL SWORD & ARMOR
the soul sword is a blade forged out of the last remaining untainted parts of illyana’s soul.  the blade is her and she is the blade. looks like it’s  like the landscape of limbo   she can summon the sword at will,  though it is a grisly image when she does.  she is the sword but she is also the sheath,  she is the sword she is the stone.  to draw the sword she has to reach inside herself, plunging her hand into her ribcage and pulling free the sword with a bloody spray.  to sheath the sword she returns it to her soul by impaling herself on it’s blade. ( visual reference : here and here.  video game blood / gore tw in the link  the sword is impossibly heavy for anyone other than illyana to wield.  the one exception to this is kitty pryde,  the only person illyana trusts to carry the weight of her soul.  the soul sword can take any form,  but illyana favors the shape of a massive claymore / buster sword.  despite it’s size the soul sword cannot deal physical damage, it passes through all armor and physical matter.  which isn’t to say it doesn’t hurt to be hit with,  the soul sword disrupts magic and souls-  so when it hits you it feels like reliving all of the worst memories of your life,  it’s your worst fear,  it’s like having a night terror while you’re awake--   the armor that accompanies the soul sword it is the exact opposite, made from the most demonic parts of her soul and she wears it like a protective shell.  it doesn’t look like metal or leather, it’s like oil slick or coagulating blood its always shifting- crawling- across her skin and when you touch it it’s like spilling liquid nitrogen on your skin.  it’s horrible, it is literally her trauma weaponized.  this is definitely symbolic of how she uses her trauma to distance herself from others and keeps people away.  visual reference for the sword and illyana’s general fighting style of pure brute strength here and here.  animated blood / gore tw in the link
