Mixed feels about 'If I were a carpenter'
youtube
I'm gonna start by saying that 'If I were a carpenter' is a beautiful song, and I especially love Robert Plant's arrangement.
But every time I listen to it these days I'm torn.
On the one hand, the opening lyric sets up the power imbalance with the dude as the (presumed poor/humble - carpentry is a good trade, but the whole 'Harrison FordJesus was a carpenter' thing has it placed in mind as a humble occupation) carpenter and the woman as a 'lady'. So, he is asking all he questions from the supposition of her vastly superior privilege, used to extreme subservience.
On the other hand, some of the lyrics that follow... D-:
If a tinker were my trade, would you still find me Carry the pots I made, follow behind me?
Why she gotta follow behind you, dude??? Like, sure, a tinkerer is even further down the social ladder, defo not usually respected by a lady, but why do you need her to be behind you??
Maybe we're meant to imagine them walking from place to place, selling the wears, and he has to go first because he's doing the selling. But then...
If I worked my hands at wood Oh, would you still love me? Answer me babe, "Yes, I would, I'd put you above me"
I'm sorry, WHAT?
You're not only instructing her how to answer this quiz session of hypotheticals (presumably because this is the answer you need in order to love her back) but you need the answer to say she'd put you *above* her. Why????
Love should be a meeting of equals. It's not equalising if either is demanding subservience (outside of a previously agreed kinky scene wit proper aftercare).
And, more to the point. These are all hypotheticals. She's not actually a member of the nobility. He's not actually her social inferior. In the case of Robert Plant at least, he's a wealthy white man. And now he's come at some poor woman all, 'Hey, set aside the obvious power imbalance in which we actually exist for a moment. Suppose you were the one with privilege - I know you're not, but let's say - you'd still love me right? And you'd love me enough to not just give up that privilege, but put me above you? You'd do that, right? 'Cause if you wouldn't, I'm not sure that's good enough for me.'
And :-///
URGH. Why do so many skillfully composed songs have to have such sucky implications that leave me feeling so ambivalent??
(Answer: the music industry has been dominated by white men for far too long and they have been completely unreflective when composing.)
And yes, I know Plant wasn't the original composer. Tim Hardin was also a white dude, as are many of the artists who have covered the song.
