My Adventures with Superman Issue #1 Easter Eggs

My Adventures with Superman's comic book tie-in which bridges the gap between seasons 1 and 2 is out this week and so why not point out the Easter Eggs and references in the first issue which you can buy at your local comic shop! Spoilers if you have not read the comic

To start things off Clark is talking about enjoying the snow and Christmas and it will be his first Christmas in Metropolis. We get our title, a possible reference to The Man Who Fell to Earth, the novel by Walter Tevis where an alien who lands on Earth and seeks to bring his people there due to a drought on his home world. Very apt title for a Superman comic I should say.

Also check out Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight for a cool crossover between the DC heroes and Santa Claus, its FUCKING AWESOME!

We then see Clark talking about his Christmas experience back in Kansas with Ma and Pa Kent, but he'll be all alone on his first Christmas in Metropolis. Luckily for him Lois and Jimmy are planning special for him but they need the other Daily Planet trio to distract Clark from figuring out the plans. I talked more about them here.

Back at their office Jimmy and Lois plan out what they'll do for Clark's Christmas in Metropolis and Jimmy mentions the Metropolis Monarchs, Metropolis' baseball team who are first mentioned in Atlas of the DC Universe. We also see Kaiju Parasite/Ivo and Overman in the next panel, both of which I talk about here, here, here, and here.

Trouble happens when the Daily Planet begins to topple over and Superman goes to put it back but notices hand prints that melted the base of the building. He, Lois, and Jimmy investigate in the sewers and sees an Amazo robot inspired Parasite. I talked more about the Amazo robot and Parasite here and here, they're the same links as the ones above in the previous section in case you missed them. The Parasite suit here is more Amazo inspired thanks to the green striping on the body.

The second Parasite is able to adapt to Superman's powers like his super strength and before it gets taken down my the US military it tell Superman to "please save me". Robert DuBois arrives on the scene to clear the Parasite's body away. That name may sound familiar to you if you saw the latest Suicide Squad movie because...

Robert DuBois is Bloodsport. He makes his first appearance in Superman #4 (1987) [Cover art by John Byrne]. In the comics Robert was supposed to be drafted for the Vietnam War, but was afraid to go and fled to Canada so his brother, Mickey went instead. Unfortunately Mickey lost his arms and legs and that scarred Robert who then seeked help at the Canadian psychiatric wards.

Lex would then find Robert and outfit him with his outfit you see on the cover and give him weapons that fired green Kryptonite to hopefully kill Superman and a teleportation device that can teleport any weapon he wants to his hands.

Luckily Robert surrendered after Jimmy was able to locate his brother to tell him to stop his rampage and give up and was sentenced to Stryker's Island.

Other Bloodsports have taken up the mantle after Robert, such as Alex Trent, a racist piece of shit, and an unnamed person who dressed similarly to Robert's Bloodsport costume. But the one pop culture knows is Robert DuBois who was played by Idris Elba in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad movie from 2021.

In current continuity we see Robert be more designed to look like his movie counterpart and being part of the Suicide Squad too as shown here from Suicide Squad #5 (2021) [W: Robbie Thompson, P&I: Dexter Soy, Eduardo Pansica, Joe Prado, and Julio Ferreira, C: Alex Sinclair, L: Wes Abbot] where he is on Earth - 3, the evil counterparts Earth for a Task Force X mission.

And speaking of shady DC organizations Slade name drops Checkmate. I talked about both of them here and here.

With that, we finally end our Easter egg and references hunt in My Adventures with Superman #1! Love (cannot emphasis how much sarcasm there is in that word) that an official Canadian government response to high cellphone rates is to switch carriers.

Switch it to what? We basically have three companies since one was allowed to eat the forth (with the government saying it wasn't anti-competition and the company eating the other pinky promising they wouldn't jack rates up). Even the smaller companies have to rent infrastructure from the Big Three so there's only so much they can do if that rent costs an arm and a leg.

And that's not touching on how many "small companies" are actually just subsidiaries of the Big Three. You may save $5 but you're still with Telus/Rogers/Bell.

Or that the actual small companies tend to have shit coverage because they don't have the infrastructure available to them and are prevented from getting it. Or their traffic is throttled in favour of the Big Three's customers. Or both.

Or that they're extremely regional thus aren't an option for a huge chunk of Canada's population.

We have no true options and the government has shown time and again that they're fine with monopolies, in multiple industries, and don't care when said monopolies jack up prices to make shareholders and the c-suite more money at the expense of everyone else. At most there will be a verbal slap on the wrist and a giftcard for $25 that people have to register for, for a decade and a half of price gouging.

It's not talked a whole lot about outside the country from what I've seen and heard but Canada is a country of monopolies. A handful of companies own nearly everything, every province has a family or two that owns a hell of a lot (Nova Scotia is basically owned by one family at this point), and our government ignores it. Even the branch that is supposed to be against monopolies is fine with mergers and takeovers in most cases.

Because, you know, the company said it totally wouldn't use consumers' lack of options to increase prices.

#canada #so much of our infrastructure and critical construction such as housing #has been pawned off for decades to private companies #and i forgot to mention one (1) family owns the bridge that is a major international corridor between canada and the us #which is apparently fine even though they fought tooth and nail to stop a bridge they don't own from being built #like our housing crisis can be traced back to the government deciding to stop building public housing in the 90s #because they figured private developers would pick up the slack #affordable apartments don't bring in much money so we got decades of cheap-ass 'luxury condos' instead #and once airbnb became a thing we got entire buildings with units <300sqft #and of course when the party in charge rotates between conservatives and neolibs nothing changes and that can gets kicked down the road #and keeps getting kicked until something collapses and they see the chance to fully privatize an industry #something similar is happening to our healthcare system too #it has been left to languish for years/decades with funding freezes and cuts #and private companies are quick to jump in and get the government stamp of approval to do [thing] that the public system clearly can't do #when [thing] would absolutely be possible if it was actually funded and/or staffed #so many communities were cut off when greyhound closed up shop because there's no government inter-city transportation #we lost internet/banking/cell service/etc nation-wide because one of the big three decided to push an update to live without redundancies #and it bugged and took the entire company's network down #even the government agency that demands major companies have a backup on a different network was taken down because they ignored that #and they got a deal if they kept their backup with rogers while their main network was also rogers #so they couldn't even make an emergency statement or anything about it #half my province also lost all digital infrastructure because it's a private company and making a redundancy line would mean smaller bonuse #it's just so bad #joke all you want about how canada is nice and friendly #but you are wrong and it's hell if you actually live here #the only reason canada is seen as nice is because it's hard to not seem like the better option when the us is your neighbour #and because of decades of pr work to make canada seem friendly and nice and not at all problematic #in some countries you actually have to try to hide you're canadian because of how much we colonize and the damage we do to other countries #yes these tags have derailed from the post but ugh #i take major issue with people who insist canada is nice and has never done anything wrong

i hate when i try to research suicide methods that are as painless as possible, but most of the results are like "there's help to get". no there isnt!!!! stop lying ._.

I'm just gonna say this too while I'm here: I wouldn't wish dementia/altzheimers or any combination of the two on anyone, ever. It's one of the cruelest diseases I've ever seen in my life, for both the person who has it and the family members surrounding them. If any of you guys are experiencing that with loved ones rn, trust me, I completely understand how hard it is to watch, and to accept. I'm sending you so many hugs and positive thoughts. Remember to try to find joy in every little thing you can, and let yourself grieve and slowly move forward. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Friends, family, therapy, all of it can make things feel a bit less bleak and more manageable. 🫂💖💖💖

So many ppl have it and there's not enough housing for the #I just want y'all to know that if you're in the same boat as me... I get it. Caretaking is HARD AF and breaks are so important seriously #No breaks leads to caregiver burnout (which I have) and can possibly lead to depression if you don't look after yourself (which I also have #It's important to look after them but you have to look after yourself too as much as you possibly can!#I'm hoping this can help other ppl not to fall into the dark abyss that I fell into before therapy. “Devil’s Parade” main characters redesigned and updated!

The year is 2018. Ayodele is given her third case since she graduated: a vampire who’d been stuck in a crypt for the past 66 years who has to adjust to this modern world and the fact that half his memory is missing due to a misterious spell… Ayodele seeks out old college friend Sofie and her brother Barry to help Shigeru out with their witchcraft.

Things get out of hand. Somehow they prove that gods exist. Shigeru and Barry are doomed lovers who are also extremely goofy. Sofie and Ayodele are not doomed but they are lovers and they are goofy. Theres a tree man who lives on the O’rin property and knows everyone’s business. The Devil is real. Somehow these four keep being wanted by the cops.

Lol I was telling my husband I have to resist the siren song of my stard. farm cus I need to play RnScp. Then I logged into RnScp to get three farming achievements the moment I load in. The call of agriculture lives within me.

sometimes i'm just awake in the middle of the night and it suddenly hits me all over again that i'm literally only halfway through college and already i'm making a film with my number one comedy hero????? like what the hell that's the type of goal i expected to be chasing for my entire career but it's happening now!!!

#this is literally the luckiest i've ever been #and tbh the fact that it happened mere months after probably the worst depressive episode in my life makes me feel like #the universe is rewarding me for getting through the shit mental health i had to deal with back in november #(yes november had some high points too w/r/t my show other girls being completed. but holy hell other girls took a LOT out of me)#also i have no idea if i'm actually gonna be able to do this but my mom and i have been looking into the possibility of me graduating early #so i can get my degree by the end of 2024 (potentially even doing my last semester online)#so that i can move to canada and establish myself more in the toronto comedy scene asap!!!#bc like. ngl i feel like with this documentary. i've basically accomplished what i wanted to get out of college #nothing's gonna top this while i'm still a student. and i already have a very solid support system up in toronto which will only grow #(and yes that support system includes three people who worked on the kids in the hall. genuinely how is this what i'm graduating into???)

ugh and it is such my headcanon that baby Curufin is quite a la Wen Yuan very empathetically attuned to whatever emotional shit the adults in the room have going on, too

and with Feanor in particular, he instinctually emotionally internalizes it as something that he uniquely has the capacity and responsibility to help fix - which is... not true but it makes sense in his sad small child brain ok. and also his maladjusted young adult with a child of his own jfc who allowed that to happen brain for that matter.

(do various people notice this at some point or another and try to gently set him in a better direction on it? sure. does it help? Absolutely Not.)

i hope today's strikes spoil Crimea as a tourist destination for russians. i wish we could've done this at the start of the summer holiday season, but maybe it's better to do it when the beaches are full of tanning invaders — front-row seat for them for Ukraine's display of "get the fuck out"

I can't believe I just saw someone defending brachycephalic dogs. They're not ethical and you can't just "ethically breed" brachy dogs that don't have problems. It might be able to be done, assuming all brachy dog breeders agree on it, but these are dog breeders we're talking about.

Breeders who line-breed to rapidly exaggerate traits.

Breeders who don't care if a breed can only give birth via surgical intervention.

Breeders who can't bother socializing their pups.

Breeders who are adamantly against out-crossing because they're into "blood purity".

Far, far, far too many debilitating illnesses are treated as "features" of breeds because dog breeders (at least show breeders, who are the main drivers of what the public sees and the public thinks is normal) can be a terrible group of people who care about status, money, and were one of the places where eugenicists went post-WWII.

A group of people who don't consider the suffering of animals they breed can't be trusted one iota to do a bunch of extra tests to eventually, maybe, have an "ethical brachy" dog breed.

#and i'm not kidding about eugenicists flocking to dog breeding #farmwives were the driving force and biggest supporters for eugenics in canada #well into the 70s and 80s #because 'if we can breed animals for traits why not do so with humans?'#dogs were accessible and had a degree of legitimacy because of the british nobility #and dog generations are a lot faster than cow or horse ones #so people could see their goal in their lifetime and firmly secure it #not to mention the litter sizes increasing the odds of at least one of them fitting one's standards #there are of course some great breeders out there #but usually they breed for the breed itself and any show-quality ones are a bonus #or they're working lines so health and functionality takes priority over form #also i'm not even sure you could breed an 'ethical brachy' dog #you would need to get lucky on so many mutations and those sorts of mutations #tend to impact other parts of the animal #e.g. scottish fold cats don't have only folded ears #their ears are folded because of a mutation that affects cartilage thus causes joint issues and pain #but the main thing people see are folded ears and a lower energy breed #(lower energy because they're in pain and/or too much movement causes pain)#some extremes just aren't possible #or if they are are definitely not ethical #and an animal's well-being >>> your sense of aesthetic

im the deciding factor in whether or not my family moves soon. cause my brother's gonna graduate and i'm gonna be the one left and so it's my decision oh god
