Hi! Your blog is awesome. I don't know if I'm allowed to ask non-atla questions, so I hope this is okay. I'm working on a non-avatar ttrpg campaign that takes place both in a (fictional/fantasy) northern tundra region AND during a magical endless winter. The people in it aren't based on any specific culture but, given that they're successfully living in similar environments & have for countless generations, I want to draw as much inspiration & knowledge from real-life circumpolar cultures & native science as much as possible. Do you have any advice or even just fun, underappreciated ideas for winter tundra survival, things someone who grew up in a desert like me wouldn't think of on my own? If you need/want more direction: I'm particularly looking for clothing, shelters, resource gathering-practices for non-food (esp what kinds of resources would be valuable), as well as like, any fun details that evolve naturally in a culture that formed in the tundra that you'd want to see represented. I hope that makes sense ^^; Thanks so much if you decide to answer, have a good day either way <3
[I am SOOO sorry this took so long! Tumblr kept not saving my progress when i tapped "save draft" so i had to rewrite a few of these passages a few different times]
Don't worry about asking, friend, i get cultural questions all the time and i'm happy to share.
Note: my knowledge is almost entirely based on coastal tundra peoples with access to marine mammals. That's not to say it's impossible for people to live farther inland, just that it's not my area of expertise.
Clothing
Just about everything you wear is going to come off of a dead animal. This doesn't necessarily need to be the case if your fictional culture has a means of raising hardy livestock for fiber and a history of woven textiles, but even then skin clothes are warm and generally quite hard-wearing and are a good fit for living in these circumstances.
This amount of fur means lice are a perpetual problem. If you want to make that an immersive part of the game, you can work in a mechanic for checking scalps and clothing and bedding for lice.
Bird skins can also be used for clothing and waterfowl specifically has the benefit of water resistance. Fish skin can also be used for similar properties. Animal intestines can be made into a waterproof material if sewn with sinew and soaked before finishing.
On that note i'd recommend making a list of available animals and what qualities and textures their skins and furs have. Even if you don't intend on being incredibly descriptive with clothing, it's something better to have and not need than need and not have. And if you do anything else creative in a similar setting you have your nifty little source to consult.
When it comes to the actual construction of the clothes, you want a loose fit. Trapped air ia a great insulator and you want clothes to be easy to move in. Another benefit for loose-fitting upper body garments in cold weather is you can pull your arms in and keep them by your much warmer core. Not only will this option keep you comfortable, it can also prevent muscle injury or getting frostbite
Mittens can be worn on a string yoke. This doesn't have to be exclusive to children either. Wind can pick up out of nowhere and lost mittens means fingers exposed to arctic cold which can mean gangreen and amputations down the line.
Swimming or running to deliver a message may involve stripping nude, even in cold. Clothes soaked in water or sweat are deadly in the cold.
Clothes may be stored in bags outside when not in use. The low temperatures can kill bugs and bacteria. On a similar note, boots and coats are best to be hung to dry as soon as one is indoors for the day. This may mean it's normal for people to be topless indoors.
Boots should never have holes or tears. Frostbite and resulting gangreen is already bad enough but you especially do not want it on your feet
Shelter
You're going to want dwellings to have as few rooms and windows as possible and small doors. The fewer walls you have, the easier it is for heat to circulate throughout the whole dwelling. You'll probably want one room separating the door and where you sleep. Remember: trapped air is a great insulator.
The culture I've reconnected with is semi-nomadic so the permanent houses are not always occupied and a village can seem abandoned when it's just on its "off season". You can take that or leave it depending on what you're going for.
Even if the dwelling is not a tent, you're probably still going to have poles serving as a supporting frame.
Sod houses are common due to the availability of sod (the grass and the dirt its roots are tangled in). Tents made of warm, waterproof skins (like walrus skin) are also an option.
An easy way to insulate such a dwelling is to build a wall of packed snow around and fill the gaps with loose, airy snow. This traps air the same way down feathers do.
Non-Food Resource Gathering
While I imagine you meant obtaining resources outside of hunting, in a tundra or tundra-like setting, a lot of your resources are going to come from dead animals. Your garments and shelters and bedding are likely to be made of animal skins, with hollow and/or fluffy fur for warmth, or smoked intestine or fish skin, sewn with tiny stitches and soaked to keep everything flush, for waterproof boots and overlayers. Antlers and tusks are good carving materials for things like spoons and closures and slabs for armor and handles and also talismans and smoking pipes and beads and art. Baleen is good for art too, as well as boot soles and smaller sleds and beautiful baskets. Sinew and rawhide are good for thread, ties, and rope. Bones have a near infinite amount of uses from tiny wing bones to make sewing needles to huge whale bones used to build houses.
For the purposes of working this into a roleplaying game, i'd second the recommendation of keeping a list of animals in your universe and their properties, as well as the things that can be gathered from or made of them. A sort of crafting recipe guide would allow all kinds of quests and sidequests.
There are, of course, non-animal resources to gather for non-eating purposes. Soapstone is the traditional material for oil lamps. Grasses can be woven into baskets for any number of purposes, including supports to give the uppers of one's boots more structure. Wood, in the form of slices of tree trunks, can be hollowed out into bowls and small tubs and buckets or, as logs or slats, can make up flooring. Sturdy branches can be used for frames in houses, boats, and drums, and tree resin makes both good glue and antibiotic salve for closed wounds. Sod, also called turf, makes a good building material and moss is exellent insulation in boots. You can make a list of these too, if it helps.
If your fictional culture has a strong tradition of metallurgy, then they'd also mine for metal that can be used for knives. If not, slate is another option that requires significantly less fire. You could even have both and make the metal a status symbol.
Fun Details to Represent
There are so many lovely little things that show up in arctic cultures
First, a gift economy. Where a cash economy relies on a fairly individualistic culture where you work for someone else to earn capital and exchange that capital for goods and services, a more collectivist and interdependent culture natural to the harsh conditions of the tundra tends to result in a gift economy. The currency in a gift economy, to perhaps oversimplify, is favors. Someone does you a good turn, you remember that, and when you're in a position to help, you return the favor. Usually this means basic material things like hospitality and food, but the "gifts" exchanged can also be luck! King Islander boys would often wish hunters setting out at dawn good luck, with a slab of driftwood as a token of that luck, and if the hunters were successful, they'd give the boys who wished them luck a share of their catch. I believe it was Frank Ellana who remenised that this was what the world was like before money.
Another thing that would be nice to include is parenting practices considered fairly gentle to a Euro-American perspective. Physical punishments are traditionally treated as abuse and scolding a child is not only seen as wrong but something an adult ought to be ashamed of. Discipline is instead a series of moral lessons, teaching children why what they did was wrong and using stories as examples of the consequences. Given the amount of stories about the dangers of abusing a spouse or child, i'd say a lot of these lessons were proactive and preventative. Knowing someone will be hurt by it is considered enough of a deterrence to stop bad behaviors. Traditional potty training, for example, is also gentler in comparison; starting at a younger age (about six months) with more emphasis on praise and encouragment than routine. The goal here is to teach the baby to signal when they need to go so they can be taken out of mama's atigi and relieve themself in a hygenic manner instead of holding it until they get permission. Even our take on kissing is based on inhaling instead of pecking with the lips. This kind of gentleness is usually overlooked to instead focus on the badass hunter image or overall "cuteness" so it would be nice for it to be referenced.
Oral histories would be pretty neat too. I think the idea of learning to be a historian of oral histories is an interesting one and i think it has a lot of potential plot hooks for an rpg.
That's all i have for now. Sorry for the delayed response time. Happy gaming, and i'm always up for further discussion if you would like ^-^

hello! i've just discovered this blog and am very excited about all the words here, as someone who is interested in learning hawaiian (the music is so beautiful...) do u know some other good resources to look at for pronounciation, verb conjugation and hawaiian history? where do u source all of these words? do u have some info you'd like to share about hawaii regarding stereotypes and misconceptions?
I'm glad that my WOTD series has been helpful for you! I've been meaning to be more active on here and starting it back up again for a while now 😅
My source for vocab words is this English-Hawaiian and Hawaiian-English dictionary (https://www.trussel2.com/HAW/eng-a.htm)*. I also have a physical copy of the Pukui & Elbert dictionary (which is one of the main sources for this combined dictionary), although I tend to prefer the online one since it's much quicker to find specific words. The Trussel page for Hawaiian also has topical subsets (https://www.trussel2.com/HAW/topical.htm), which you can use to create themed vocab sets for practice.
For pronunciation, it's hard for me to give tips since I learned it by just getting exposure to the sounds while I was growing up, but the resource I use for grammar does have a brief introduction to pronunciation guidelines (https://hawaiian-grammar.org/current/#h.35nkun2). The best way to improve your pronunciation is probably to just listen to people speaking Hawaiian a lot, though. Continuing to listen to Hawaiian music would probably be helpful for learning pronunciations!
Hawaiian grammar is deceptively simple, but can be pretty difficult to learn from an English-speaking perspective because of how different the rules are. To give just one example, Hawaiian doesn't have adjectives or adverbs in the same way as languages like English or Spanish do. Instead, stative verbs, which refer to a state of affairs, rather than to an action, event, or process, are used. For example, in the sentence "Ua maʻi ʻo ia" meaning "He is sick", where "maʻi" is the stative verb meaning "to be sick" but used to represent the adjective "sick". Verbs also don't actually conjugate at all in Hawaiian. You add verb markers (māka painu) to indicate tense and mood, but the verb itself doesn't change. In the previous sentence, the verb marker "ua" is used to show that becoming sick is a completed action.
There's so many resources out there for learning about Hawaiian history that it's difficult to choose any in particular, but to keep it brief I'll just recommend a couple books. The first one is "Hawaiʻis Story by Hawaiʻis Queen" by Queen Liliʻuokalani. The second is "Aloha Betrayed: Native Hawaiian Resistance to American Colonialism" by Noenoe K. Silva.
I can't think of any specific stereotypes or misconceptions off the top of my head, but I definitely think that certain parts of Hawaiian history aren't very well known outside of the islands. One of these things is the history of how Hawaii became a state in the first place. Unlike most other states prior to becoming part of the US, the Hawaiian Kingdom was a recognized sovereign nation. It was illegally annexed in a coup d'état in 1893 in which Queen Liliʻuokalani was overthrown. After being deposed, Queen Liliʻuokalani was held in her home, ʻIolani Palace, under house arrest. (An actual fun fact to finish this out though is that ʻIolani Palace is the only royal palace on US soil!)
*For anyone interested in other Austronesian languages, trussel2.com also has dictionaries for Kiribati, Marshallese, Mokilese, Palauan, Pohnpeian, and Yapese!

would you be willing to produce a version of your post about the IA issue that doesn't contain a targeted guilt trip of any tumblr users who were taken in by the initial statement / didn't fully understand what was going on and were just worried about losing IA as a resource? It seems like a good and valuable analysis, but I have a firm policy of not sharing posts that contain meanspirited yelling at innocent bystanders whose only crime is not understanding the issues as well as you do.
Hello! Thank you (very genuinely) for asking.
But no.
I don't blame you or anyone for not sharing the post(s) I have made about the IA situation. I don't believe anyone has any obligation to share any post, period. And even beyond that, I 100% understand not sharing a post, even if it contains good or valuable information, just because you don't like some aspect of the tone or language and don't want it on your blog - I do that myself all the time!
And I understand any discomfort with the specific passage you are referring to. I normally try to write my posts assuming as much good faith as possible and would not include a passage like that. But I did include it, and now that it's out there, I'm happy that I did; and I will not produce a version with it removed.
And here's why. Quoting the part you are objecting to:
And bluntly? If you - not IA, YOU, tumblr user reading this - if you shared this bullcrap statement and told people to donate money to the IA because of this? If you told people they should steal more books in response (because it's the publishers fault, ignore the real authors who are actually harmed)? How DARE you. How DARE you pretend to be on the side of authors and writers.
As you say, this is targeted. Specifically, it is targeted at two (overlapping) groups of people:
People who shared the IA's statement AND told people to donate money to the IA because of the court case.
People who told others to steal more books in response to the ruling.
I don't think individuals in those groups are bad people. But I do think they did something harmful to real authors (who are also people), and they should feel whatever degree of shame or embarrassment necessary to make them stop doing it, and try to not do it again.
The harm of the people telling others to steal more from authors should be obvious. You don't need to understand the situation to know that's a shitty thing to do.
As for the other group, there is a reason I specifically targeted it to people who shared the IA's statement. There is a difference between sharing a post or article that contains misinformation, and sharing an extremely short statement with a line like, "It hurts authors by saying that unfair licensing models are the only way their books can be read online." Because that line is a massive warning flag. You don't need to know anything else about the situation to say, hey wait. This line seems like some real "for exposure" level b.s, focusing on how "their books can be read" rather than 'how authors can publish'. And if it's genuine, it seems to be saying that this case means that it's literally illegal for anyone to publish anything digitally unless they license with a publisher. If true, that's an astonishingly huge story - maybe I should check this out more.
If someone read that line and it didn't raise warning flags for them - or if they didn't bother to read the statement at all before re-blogging it - then yes, they messed up.
And here's the harm that mistake caused: not only did it spread further misinformation, it continued, however indirectly, the harm against the IA's victims.
Imagine, for a moment, that you are one of the authors whose works were stolen by the IA for their "Emergency Library." Maybe you spoke out at the time against the Emergency Library, maybe you saw the harassment others were receiving and decided not to. (And maybe you were harassed anyway.) Statistically speaking, you are not rich. Statistically speaking, you struggled financially due to COVID too.
And then you saw this decision come down. And then you saw this statement. This statement from the same organization that stole from you, that ignored pleas from you (or other authors like you) to stop stealing your work, that spread and encouraged the misinformation that caused people to harass you (or other authors like you). And this statement pretends that the organization is really on your side and fighting for your rights. (Not your right to be paid for your labor. Not your rights to your intellectual property. Just your "right" to be distributed for free by the IA (regardless of your wishes on the matter.)
And you see people (lots and lots of people) sharing that statement. And you see them telling people to give the IA money. (And they do give it money.) You see the same organization that stole your work raise money, quite literally, on the basis of the work they stole from you and their fight for the right to continue stealing your work. (And meanwhile, harassment against authors, even authors who publicly state they support IA, picks up again.)
Imagine how it must feel to be an author in that position.
I don't think anyone who shared that statement and told people to donate to the IA intended to spread information, or to harm authors. But they did. They were not innocent bystanders. I understand making mistakes and accidentally spreading misinformation. It doesn't make someone a bad person. And in this case, part of the reason I'm so angry with the IA and their supporters is that they've been spreading misinformation in a way specifically designed to cause worry and panic, and thus work to override people's critical thinking. But accidental harm, negligent harm, is still harm.
And my rage was and is not rage to hurt them (and I am sorry for their pain if I did hurt them, for more pain is never something to celebrate), but rage on behalf of the authors. Because what happened (is happening) to them is wrong, and I believe it is right to rage against it. And I will not rewrite my post to remove that rage.

Oi, mods!
Bora focar no nosso jogo. Se tiver algo rolando e que for prejudicar o jogo e a moderação não está vendo ou tomando providências sobre, venham, deem um toque, conversem. Mas coisas que não fazem diferença no andamento do jogo... só respirem e não pirem, galera.

You're my favorite preservationist blog, so once again I wanted to hear your take on this:
I may not fully understand the situation here, so take this with a grain of salt,
but wasn't it a risky move for the Internet Archive to allow 'unlimited concurrent lending' indefinitely?
Yes, the pandemic still exists; yes it would be better if greedy publishing houses couldn't threaten the existence of petabytes of preserved data over the equivalent of a few bucks,
but as one of the last bastions against the relentless onslaught of IP law, in some cases literally the only thing preventing content from falling into lost media territory,
shouldn't they have stayed a little more within the rules on this, rather than risking legal exposure they can't afford?
Isn't it their duty as an archive to play it safe and act within the law so a loss like this doesn't mean everyone loses access to everything?
Is it worth fighting a costly legal battle to maintain a more ideal state of open access if it very well could mean the end of all they've worked for and media preservation as we know it?
All the commentary I've seen so far has been rightfully angry at the publishers for pursuing this, but if the IA goes down because they fought for the right to help the most people possible and lost, the resulting harm will be irreparable, and from an archivist's perspective that seems woefully irresponsible on their part.
I think their objective should be to preserve as much content and maintain as much access as possible, yes, but this feels like an all-or-nothing gambit that could have been avoided by just going back to how they operated pre-pandemic.
I'm afraid of what will happen if fighting the good fight means dying for the cause. Some loss of access, even if it's a change as drastic as going from unlimited to limited, doesn't seem like the hill to die on if it means total loss of access.
Please correct me if my understanding of the situation is factually inaccurate, but this is the conclusion I've come to given the information I currently have.
(Also thanks for hearing me out on this. It really means a lot that I have someone I can express my thoughts to, on this and in general.)
I am honored that you see this as a preservationist blog! While I think media preservation is an extremely important thing I saw myself as just a normal person with opinions and some resources to share rather than any kind of expert or activist.
As a result, my understanding of the laws and consequences involved is probably not more advanced than yours. In the best case scenario the archive survives and only the book lending service suffers, but even that seems like a catastrophic loss. In the worst case scenario, the lawsuit could cost them so much that it could impact other parts of the site. This ruling is definitely bad either way.
That's also saying nothing of the effect this could have on other digital libraries, which could begin to limit their own services to avoid similar lawsuits.
Due to that lack of understanding of the nuances of the law, I don't know how strong their legal case was and therefore can't really comment on whether providing this particular service was unusually reckless.
However, on a moral level I am proud to have financially supported them even if just in the small ways available to a random person on the internet, and will continue to stand by them throughout the appeal process.
One thing about preservation that is always worth keeping in mind is that it's not about just keeping the texts or putting them in some restricted archive or a museum. Ideally, I want as many people as possible to be able to acquire whatever information they wish with ease and become vessels for sharing it themselves.
That not only keeps the information more "alive" by letting people actually interact with it but also makes it more resilient. If the only copies of a work are kept in a museum then said work can easily be lost if something happens to said museum. However, if the work is downloaded and shared by thousands of people around the world then it becomes much more likely to endure.
Most of all I just wish for the end of copyright law and the very concept of intellectual property...

Breaking Myths About the IAS Exam: Common Misconceptions Debunked
Embarking on the journey to become an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is no small feat. It's a dream that many aspire to achieve, but oftentimes, misconceptions about the exam can cloud the path to success. In this blog, we'll debunk some of the most common myths surrounding the IAS exam, shedding light on what it really takes to crack one of the toughest competitive exams in the world.
Myth 1: You Need to Be a Genius to Crack the IAS Exam One of the most prevalent myths is that only geniuses can pass the IAS exam. While intelligence certainly helps, it's not the sole determining factor. Diligent preparation, strategic planning, and a strong work ethic play equally crucial roles. Success in the IAS exam is more about perseverance and consistency than innate intelligence.
Myth 2: Only Candidates from Ivy League Institutions Succeed Contrary to popular belief, your alma mater doesn't dictate your chances of success in the IAS exam. While prestigious institutions may offer certain advantages in terms of resources and networking, candidates from diverse educational backgrounds have proven their mettle in the exam. What truly matters is a thorough understanding of the syllabus and effective study techniques, regardless of your college or university.
Myth 3: English Fluency is Mandatory Another misconception is that fluency in English is a prerequisite for clearing the IAS exam. While proficiency in English can be beneficial, especially in the interview stage, the exam offers the option to choose either English or Hindi as the medium of writing. What's more important is a strong command of the chosen language and the ability to express ideas clearly and coherently.
Myth 4: Success Requires Years of Preparation While it's true that the IAS exam demands dedicated preparation, success doesn't necessarily hinge on years of toil. With the right guidance, effective study techniques, and disciplined approach, it's possible to crack the exam in a relatively short period. What matters most is the quality of your preparation rather than the quantity of time spent.
Myth 5: The Interview Stage is a Formality Some candidates underestimate the significance of the interview stage, assuming it's merely a formality after clearing the written exams. In reality, the interview is a crucial component of the selection process, providing an opportunity for candidates to showcase their personality, knowledge, and suitability for the administrative role. Preparation for the interview should be thorough and comprehensive, encompassing current affairs, personality development, and mock interviews.
In conclusion, debunking these myths about the IAS exam is essential to demystifying the process and empowering aspiring candidates to pursue their dreams with confidence. With the right mindset, preparation, and guidance, anyone can overcome the challenges and emerge victorious in this prestigious exam.

Top 4 Tried and Tested Strategies for IAS Exam Success
Tumblr media
The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam is considered to be one of the toughest exams in the country. Every year, thousands of aspirants appear for this exam with the dream of becoming a civil servant. However, only a few are able to crack it and achieve their goal. So, what sets these successful candidates apart from the rest? The answer lies in their preparation strategies. In this blog post, we will discuss the top 4 tried and tested strategies for IAS exam success, specifically for those looking for IAS coaching in Indore.
1) Start Early and Be Consistent
The first and most important strategy for IAS exam success is to start early and be consistent in your preparation. Aspiring candidates should ideally start their preparation at least a year in advance. This will give them enough time to cover the vast syllabus and revise it multiple times. Being consistent in your preparation is also crucial. Make a study schedule and stick to it religiously. Consistency is the key to success in any competitive exam.

2) Understand the Exam Pattern and Syllabus
Before starting your preparation, it is essential to understand the exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly. The IAS exam has three stages – Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Each stage has a different pattern and requires a different approach. Understand the weightage of each topic in the syllabus and focus on the ones that carry more marks. This will help you plan your preparation accordingly.
3) Study Material and Resources
Choosing the right study material and resources is crucial for IAS exam success. There are numerous books and online resources available, but not all of them are relevant or reliable. It is essential to do thorough research and consult with experts before finalizing your study material. Joining a reputed IAS coaching in Indore can also be beneficial as they provide well-researched study material and guidance from experienced faculty.
4) Practice, Practice, Practice
The saying “Practice makes perfect” holds true for the IAS exam as well. It is not enough to just study and understand the concepts; one must also practice solving questions to improve their speed and accuracy. Solve previous years’ question papers and mock tests to get a feel of the actual exam. This will also help in identifying your strengths and weaknesses and work on them accordingly.

Understanding Initial Recognition of Property, Plant, and Equipment under IFRS
Tumblr media
Property, plant, and equipment (PPE) play a significant role in the financial reporting of companies, representing tangible assets used in operations. Initial recognition of PPE is a crucial step in accounting for these assets, governed by IAS 16: Property Plant & Equipment. In this blog, we delve into the process of initial recognition of PPE as per the provisions of IAS 16, outlining key principles and considerations in a concise manner.
Tumblr media
Definition of Property, Plant, and Equipment:
Property, plant, and equipment encompass tangible assets held for use in production, supply of goods or services, rental to others, or administrative purposes. These assets are expected to generate economic benefits over multiple periods and are distinct from inventory or financial instruments. Examples include land, buildings, machinery, and vehicles.  Criteria for Recognition:
According to IAS 16, PPE should be recognized in the financial statements when:
It is probable that future economic benefits associated with the asset will flow to the entity.
The cost of the asset can be reliably measured.  Measurement of Initial Recognition:
The initial recognition of PPE involves determining the cost of the asset, which includes all expenditures directly attributable to bringing the asset to its intended condition and location for use. This may include purchase price, delivery costs, installation charges, and initial testing expenses.  Components of Cost:
Initially a PPE will be recognized at cost. There are three elements of cost:
Purchase Price: The amount paid to acquire the asset, including import duties and non-refundable purchase taxes, after deducting trade discounts and rebates.
Directly Attributable Costs: Costs directly associated with bringing the asset to the location or condition necessary for it be used as intended by the management. Such as transportation and installation.
Initial Estimates: Any initial estimates of decommissioning, dismantling, or restoration costs that are included in the asset's cost.
Subsequent Recognition:
Once initially recognized, PPE subsequently can be carried at cost or a revaluation model. PPE is measured at cost less accumulated IAS 16 depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is calculated systematically over the asset's useful life to reflect its consumption of economic benefits.
Disclosure Requirements:
Entities are required to disclose significant accounting policies related to PPE, including the measurement basis used (e.g., cost model or revaluation model), IAS 16 depreciation methods, useful lives, and residual values. Additionally, disclosures about the carrying amount, accumulated depreciation, and any revaluation adjustments are necessary.  Conclusion:
The initial recognition of property, plant, and equipment is a fundamental aspect of financial reporting under IAS 16. By adhering to the criteria outlined in IAS 16 and accurately measuring the cost of PPE, entities can provide transparent and reliable information about their tangible assets to stakeholders. Understanding the principles of initial recognition ensures compliance with accounting standards and facilitates informed decision-making regarding capital investments and asset management.
