oh good news for those of us who only saw the english version of the french union call for testimony, or who don't speak french:
when in english they said quackity "half-heartedly" acknowledged things, in the french version the word they used was "demi-mot". having consulted a few dictionaries i THINK it's not a direct translation or at least not a wholly accurate one. from what i'm seeing, "reconnaître à demi-mot" roughly means "to admit indirectly". translation of "demi-mot" directly seems to be something like "implicitly" or "without spelling things out".
i've linked the sources where i found the translations for any english speakers who want to double check and please, any native french speaker who disagrees PLEASE tell me if you have a different translation than was provided, or have insight on the connotation!!
"half-heartedly" implies a lack of personal or emotional investment which i think got a lot of us on the defensive (certainly raised my eyebrow) but i think that's just an imperfect translation. from what i'm seeing, 'demi-mot' doesn't have those same connotations.
(incidentally, putting 'reconnaître à demi-mot' into google translate does produce 'to acknowledge half-heartedly'; no shade, to be clear, considering they're a FRENCH union i wouldn't blame them if they had to use online translation tools, and 'demi-mot' is hard to translate, at least for me)
both english and french versions of the call are linked in this post
ADDITION FROM THE REPLIES:
@selemina : "French speaker here, you are very right! In this context, it could mean "he recognized, without saying so explicitly [...]". Or it is a notion of not enough being said on a subject. There is a layer of secrecy to something said 'à demi-mot', which often implies dishonesty. Applied to this context, I think the union is suspicious of Quackity's latest declaration (probably from seeing many dishonest people in charge before) but still reporting the facts." (THANK YOU!!)

Here's a meme for all the aroallos <2
Tumblr media
[ID: A meme consisting of two pictures. They depict a scene from a cartoon TV show. In the first picture, there is a black haired man wearing a suit. He is looking towards the viewer with a big smile on his face. He is gesturing behind him as if he wanted to present something. Behind him, there's a white pedal with nothing on it. Red ribbon held up by four golden poles is going around it. Above the pedestal, there are three headlights shining on it. The room appears to be part of a gallery or a museum. At the top of the picture, white text in all caps says "This is where I'd put good canon aroallo representation...". The second picture depicts the same situation, except the man is now leaning slightly forward so that the pedestal isn't as visible anymore. He appears to be yelling angrily. His hands are in front of his body, half closed with the palms facing upwards. White text in all caps at the bottom of the picture says "... if I had any!" / End ID]

This was the first time I saw Din, beaten and covered in blood, without his helmet, but it was definitely him.
He recognized me too. Of course he did. His gaze changed, and I could only imagine what's in his mind as he was looking at me – sitting there in silk and fur.
Space SW AU, where Din is captured and disarmed, and taken to a local fighting ring as a gladiator. Cobb is undercover here to rescue him. This AU idea was created by my friend @irkinsblog (whom I dragged into the Mandalorian fandom recently, hehe), and this really inspired me to make sort of an illustration.

It was supposed to be Miles/Hobie/Miles because @pleasetakethis post didn't leave my brain to rest, but Pavitr wanted to be included as well, and now it is not OT3, and not even slash, just pre-slash for an OT4 I've not seen before... Oops.
It was a weird thing to notice. It would have been a weird thing to notice in normal situation as well, but the one Miles was in?
It was more than just "weird".
Might have been disassociation, maybe that would explain why, while noticing the differences between him, and this terrifying version of him, Prowler him, a part of him had to note that of course he had to have the better hairstyle too.
Confident, scary as fuck, and so much more than scared little him, who felt like a bug under the microscope.
"Didn't answer. Why would I care about your father dying?" The other version asked, moving his fist away. Miles inhaled shakily, not finding his words. Seeing how everything changed, seeing that it was-
He was the fault of it.
He just shut down. He couldn't say anything.
"Huh, I guess the cat got your tongue," Miles - Prowler Miles, 42, The Other Miles - smirked. A clawed finger caressed Miles' cheek, more gentle and careful he would have thought it was possible.
"Leave us alone, Uncle Aaron," the Prowler asked, his eyes never leaving Miles'. The Spiderman's heart beat faster and faster, his mind conjuring scarier and scarier possibilities. He wasn't cruel, he wasn't a villain - but he knew what he would go through for something he set his mind on. And if there was one thing he believed all the Miles Moraleses were similar in, it was his determination.
"You sure, kiddo?" Uncle Aaron - not his Uncle Aaron - questioned, but he didn't wait for an answer. He just left the two boys alone.
"Now, kitten, what would you do to convince me to let you go?" The smirk on his face was strange and unfamiliar. The whole outfit, the hair, the confident body language... He couldn't have been farther from being Miles' mirror image.
"Please," he begged. Lightning sparkled from under his fingertips, but he feared that if he would use it on the bondings, he would be the one injured. He couldn't get injured - he had to deal with Spots and had to save his father!
"A-a," Prowler shook his head, his clawed finger digging into Miles' skin. He could feel a drop of blood sliding down his cheek, and he froze. "That's not an answer. Let's start again. What. Would. You. Do. For. Me. To. Let. You. Go?"
Spiderman swallowed, and nodded. "Wh-whatever you wanted. I... Please, let me go. I need to save my d-"
"Whatever, you say?" Other Miles smirked victoriously, and Miles' stomach dropped.
But he didn't back out. "Whatever you wanted."
"Good boy," Prowler growled. His head shot up, as if he was feeling something, but the spider senses didn't react. 42 looked back, his eyes narrowed. He lifted his right hand, and Miles flinched, preparing himself for the hit. Yet, instead of pain, the dangerous claws sliced through the ropes binding Miles to the box bag like they were not strong enough to keep a Spiderman still.
"I want you to get back here, as soon as you save your father." The Other Miles ordered, and as if it was nothing, he stepped back just in time two familiar forms broke through the glass.
"Miles!" Twin shouts came, and the figures rushed to him, one helping him stand, the other ready to defend them.
"It's okay, guys," he said weakly, still not looking away from the other version of him, as 42 didn't look away from him either. "I'm okay."
"Codswallop," Hobie huffed, his protective stance not relaxing.
"Miles, flower, you are not-" Pavitr hoovered over him, like a certified mother hen, and Miles' heart soared. He still had people who cared for him.
"As touching your little reunion is, I was under the belief that you had to hurry," Prowler drawled, amusement shining in his deep, dark eyes.
"He is right. I... I need to go. Please, let me save dad," Miles pleaded.
"Are you sure you are alright? Can you handle it?" Pavi asked, touching the side of Miles where he wasn't full of claw marks.
There was only one possible answer to that. "Yes."
"Good. Leg it, luv!" Hobie shouted, and pulling Miles from Pavi's hands, he lifted the two of them in the air.
"Don't forget your promise," heard Miles, and turning back to his other self, he nodded.
He would not forget. Whatever waited for him, he would come back. Because sure, Pavitr and Hobie would have been able to get him out, but not this quick and easy. He was thankful for Prowler Miles, and he was going to thank him. Properly.
Now, he had Spots to take care, the multiverse to protect, and his dad to save. But until that, he could appreciate the warmth of Hobie's hands around him, and Pavi's overprotective form fluttering around them, ready to get him to his original universe.

m6 as greek gods
(or other important figures in greek mythology)
note: this is more of a ramble than a proper headcanon/au post. and i must say that i am not that sure about all the comparisons — for some of the m6, it was harder to find characters of greek mythology that would resemble them well, and for others i found several characters that are comparable to them in some ways. and i just wanted to indulge in both these interests of mine so here it is
lucio:
ares, the god of violence in war and courage. besides lucio having a violent mindset by default ('kill or be killed', yknow) and most of the time trying to show bravado, which clearly ties to ares' main traits, there is another similarity which lies in how other people perceive lucio and ares: the fact that ares represented all the horrors of war didn't do well for his popularity among the greeks. majority of people didn't like him at all, and he had little respect as a god, often ending up humiliated in myths. it reminds me of how lucio wasn't actually liked nor respected among the people of vesuvia
cronos, the god of time. tbh i myself think this comparison isn't very fitting, but i like the fact that they have some specific parallels in their stories: 1) patricide :); 2) acting selfish and committing atrocities simply out of extreme fear of death; 3) being locked in one place after being defeated (cronos was defeated in war, lucio was.. metaphorically defeated by death. or you can see it as him being defeated by asra when they sabotaged the ritual) without an ability to escape the imprisonment (yes, lucio is again metaphorically imprisoned in the palace as a ghost before receiving external help) (i know the last point is forced but i'll keep it anyways :p)
another character that could resemble lucio is narcissus, but i think the parallels between them are a bit superficial
nadia: athena, the goddess of wisdom, strategy in war, craft. i don't think there's any other more suitable option for her, since they both possess and represent very similar traits. for nadia, war strategy could represent her rational approach to being a leader of vesuvia and her skill for battle and war tactics that are shown in the confrontation with the devil. besides, one of the main symbols of athena is an owl, much like in nadia's case
//about lucio and nadia being ares and athena: ares and athena's contrast in what they're representing in war is, i think, very similar to differences in lucio and nadia's view of leadership, what kind of rulers they wanted to be, and how they used their power to achieve their goals. lucio wanted to affirm his power by brute force and domination above all, punishing even those who help him (e.g. asra's parents), without thinking of long-term consequences. nadia sees that true power comes from strategy, maintaining balance, and a way of thinking that equally considers everyone's well-being.
muriel:
hades, the god of the dead. honestly my first reason for associating muriel with hades is hades' helm of invisibility, which instantly reminded me of muriel's gift-curse. another thing about hades that reminds me of muriel is how hades isn't often depicted in ancient greek art bc of people's fear of him, making his overall image very hazy, much like muriel doesn't leave any tangible memories of himself bc of his curse. they also resemble each other in how they are disconnected from the rest of the 'cast': in hades' case, it's how he's obliged to stay in the underworld to carry out his duty as the god of the dead, making it difficult for him to interact with other gods (besides, he himself doesn't show much interest in the affairs of the overworld); in muriel's case, it's how he also willingly chooses a solitary life in the woods, staying isolated from others
artemis, the goddess of wilderness, healing, purity. (she's also the goddess of hunt but that doesn't connect well with muriel so ignore that). she, like hades, is also a much more reserved goddess who prefers to stay in the forests surrounded only by animals and her nymphs (who are basically personified nature) than to participate in the olympians' drama. i would say that this comparison relies more on the importance of wild nature in relation to both artemis and muriel than on their character traits, since artemis doesn't hesitate to show her wrath and cruelty when punishing someone, unlike muriel
asra:
orpheus. i don't think it's really necessary to explain this choice if you're familiar with the myth
among the olympians, i would say that he resembles hermes the most — the god of roads, travelers, wit, humor, and too many other things to list them all. he has a unique role of a soul guide, who helps souls travel to the afterlife (well let's say that asra would be a soul guide for one particular soul and that he helped them travel back to life than vice versa). i'd say that hermes is a bit too mischevious and trickster-ish for asra, but i like how hermes' function of a traveler between realms fits to asra's magical abilities and frequent travels outside vesuvia.
ok i just realised that there's also hecate, the goddess of magic (!), crossroads, necromancy (!!) and ghosts — all things that asra is connected with, in some way. she, too, is a goddess who travels between realms. besides, people were placing shrines to hecate at the entrance of homes/temples to keep the dead spirits away, which reminds me of asra's protective spells against lucio's ghost. one of hecate's many symbols is a serpent, and, well... asra has faust, so...
julian: it was difficult to find a resembling enough figure for him, but here's what i decided:
dionysus, the god of wine, fertility, festivity, theatre. he's also referred to as a god of resurrection (!), and sometimes is said to be a foreigner (and i think the motif of being a foreigner is mostly present in julian's image, even though most of the m6 aren't native to vesuvia). despite dionysus being a popular god, there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding his origins and true identity, which could be tied to how julian likes to keep a mysterious external image of himself (imo) (and regarding dionysus' identity: he's sometimes said to be hades or zagreus, hades' son, both of which have death motifs, and, well, julian does have some deathly symbolism too)
note: i also thought of some similarities between julian and eros, but ultimately i didn't find this comparison fitting enough
portia:
hestia, the goddess of hearth, sacred fire, family. she is the youngest among children of cronus (after they were freed by zeus). she doesn't have much representation in mythology, being a non-confrontational and kind goddess who couldn't leave her duty of keeping the olympian hearth (therefore not taking part in any godly drama). still, she was very important to the greeks due to her being a keeper of the home and sacred fire: "among all mortals, she was chief of the goddesses." to say shortly, i think all these traits resemble portia very well, with her greatest assets being her caring, considerate and dutiful nature (she's literally responsible for the entire palace!!). and, like hestia, portia carries great importance in lives of the others without causing any drama or creating some aggrandized persona for herself: her sincere friendliness and attentiveness to others are enough for her to be greatly valued.
persephone, the goddess of spring, vegetation, nature (and the underworld but that's not really relevant in portia's case (afaik)). tbh this association is the least supported by facts, i just think portia and persephone have similar vibes
note: i must say that the arcana character whom i haven't gotten to know in much depth is portia, so i'm sorry if her description wasn't accurate enough
✦✦✦
that's all for my rambling today. thank you for reading! honestly this is the first time i'm writing smth like this, sorry if it's a bit all over the place (which it probably is). just wanted to finally write down these associations that have been plaguing my brain for some time now. (and i would be happy to read your thoughts on this too!)
last note: i definitely wouldn't call myself an expert on greek mythology, i mostly relied on my not-that-deep knowledge of it which i got from a bunch of different sources over the years + fact-checked some things while writing this. overall, don't take this too seriously

not a correction, just wanted to say thank you for organizing this blog so well. when i read svsss, it was neither the first EN fantranslation nor the original CN, so when i started interacting with the new western fandom, i was like what the hell is everyone talking about and referencing? turns out i had practically read an entirely different story and a lot of the 'facts' i thought i knew about svsss were wrong. good luck and be careful on your way. regarding so many languages it can be easy to step on other people's feelings without meaning to.
You're welcome! I do my best to be as thorough as I can.
The fact that there were fanTLs of earlier versions of the original SVSSS and the official TL being translated from the revised edition have caused quite a few of the misinterpretations I've encountered, in addition to the translations themselves having quirks. Of course, this is not meant to disparage the translators! Translation is something very difficult to do (at least, I find it very difficult), and it's hard enough to carry the meaning for someone who knows both the target and the source language, but even more difficult to translate the meaning for someone with no knowledge of the original language at all. Once you know something and are aware of it, the brain will often forget how it feels like not to know-- and for a translator with knowledge of both the source and target language, some details might be missed when translating since it's assumed to be common knowledge.
SVSSS isn't written with a western audience in mind, and there are a lot of in-jokes and the like related to specifically CNovel genre tropes and internet culture. These things don't need to be explained to CN readers, since it's common knowledge-- but to western readers it flies right over their heads, sometimes to the point where they don't even know there's something to read into. This goes for TL's in general, but especially where it has to do with modern everyday life and culture.
A personal and specific example of this would be, I study, sew, and collect Hanfu. When historical clothing is depicted or described, a simple visual description will tell me additional details about the character/time period/etc. without having to state anything more. This just happens naturally, and my mind will take it as something obvious-- meanwhile, someone who has not studied Hanfu won't necessarily see anything beyond the physical depiction. Still, those additional details and meanings aren't always easy to put into words in any sort of concise way, so it's hard to explain why to someone without that knowledge.
Like you, I also hadn't read the original fan translations. The first version I read was 7Seas Official TL, the second was the original CN version (not revised, as I had yet to find a site that hosted the revised version). To this day, I still wonder where some common fandom ideas originate from, and have found quite a few that come from these original fantranslations. Currently, I have EPUBs of the Revised CN and 7S TL, and those are what I use to write my analyses-- since I'm unfamiliar with the original fantranslations, I do rely on my followers quite a bit to provide quotes from those where necessary, as I can't jump to finding the quote in a copy as quickly as I can with the versions I have as EPUB.
This blog is, of course, particularly concerned with western EN fandom, as it is the only fandom I have any familiarity with (sadly, living in the USA makes it so I'm virtually locked out of cnet), and the EN translations-- I have little to no knowledge whatsoever about Korean/Thai/Viet/etc. translations, as I don't know those languages. I'm sure that the fandoms in these languages also have their own set of misunderstandings and misconceptions, but I can't speak on that at all. I'm just here trying to correct as much of the widespread misinformation in the western EN fandom as I can, with what knowledge and tools I have.
In the end, even when there are such misconceptions arising from it, I still have a lot of respect for translators. Language is so much more than just words, and I know from experience how difficult it can be to take something from one to another.

Hey!
So I actually found your college!miguel fic on AO3 and I just wanted to sincerely thank you for making it! I'm indigenous latino and I've seen too many fics and drabbles reducing miguel to disgusting racial stereotypes for latino men and your fic was one of the few that made him an actual person instead of a fetish and actually treated our language with respect (you worked the spanish in really well!) ! So thank you :)) I'm excited if you do a pt 2 to it!

Aro Ring Guide for closeted folk
How to justify your specific ring choices without coming out
If you still live with your parents and can not buy an aro ring without them knowing, they might ask you why exactly it has to be a white ring on the left middle finger. Also works for friends and acquaintances that you cannot or do not want to come out to.
This is what I did when I bought my aro ring and my parents started asking questions.
Just because it worked for me doesn't mean there's a guarantee it'll work for you as well. You know your situation better than me. Be safe!
Why a ring?
This will probably be easier if you're a girl (or your parents think you are), as it is more socially acceptable for women to accessorize than it is for men. However, throughout history it was common for powerful men to wear rings as a symbolism for power and wealth. It also can be a great way for self-expression.
Why the left hand?
If you're right-handed: The left hand is your non-dominant hand. You could say it makes you uncomfortable to wear a ring on your dominant hand because it can be hindering in day to day tasks such as holding a pen.
If you're left-handed: You can say that you like wearing a ring on your dominant hand better because it is more visible. You use your dominant hand more often and therefore more people will notice your ring. Alternatively, if you're wearing a watch (which is typically worn on the non dominant side), you can say you want a more balanced out look so you wear the ring on the opposite hand. This is what many style guides literally recommend when it comes to wearing rings.
Why white?
If you have light skin: You can say that you prefer a ring color that doesn't clash so much with your skin. You want a ring but you like to keep it more subtle. Admittedly, this works better if you're not wearing any other rings. If they ask you why you didn't choose a colorful ring, you can say that you want to be able to wear it with any outfit and don't want to worry about the colors of your clothes clashing with the color of the ring.
If you have dark skin: You can say you want a ring that stands out to your skin. Because if you buy a ring and wear it, you want people to notice. And white is more obvious on your skin than black or a dark metal. If they ask you why you didn't choose a colorful ring, you can say that you want to be able to wear it with any outfit and don't want to worry about the colors of your clothes clashing with the color of the ring.
And if you're somewhere in between, you can always say that you want some contrast to your skin but not too much.
Why the middle finger?
According to some websites I found (x/x/x/x), a ring on the middle finger doesn't really have an assigned meaning. Rings on the middle finger are mostly a fashion statement, apparently. Although a ring on the middle finger might symbolize power, balance and stability. But all in all, nothing that'll make your parents suspicious. I do not know how reliable those sources actually are but they are the first things to come up when you search for the meaning of rings on the middle finger online.
However, googling "white ring left middle finger" leads to aro rings! If you think your parents might google that, be careful!
Other search engines might not give you aro ring results in the top results. (For example, Ecosia does not.)
I hope this helps some of y'all!

about the drawings that made fun of the tropes, will you do more designs or were they just a sketch? (i dont know english, sorry)
I think they were just for fun, but I might play with the idea more in the future. Anybody is free to do whatever with the concept!

Aaaa I love your post SDR2 art so bad, it's probably my favorite interpretation I've seen yet!
Any mixed race hc's for any DR characters?
Mmmm, like, yes? Maybe? but I dont know that I wanna really speak out on it? Same as with asks about neurodivergent stuff or gender/sexuality headcanon, I might have some ideas but it's not rly something I wanna put into words (this is also @ all those asks). I hope I can make myself somewhat clear in my art, I hope you will understand, but I'm not really comfortable talking about it at least yet.

So, I was watching 7.18 and seeing Danny struggling to say "I love you" to Steve in those jungles, when they could die at any moment made me write this.
He should say it. No, he has to say it... He must say it. Jesus, they are two seconds from death, and it could be the last time when Danny has an opportunity to look at Steve and catch a glimpse of his blue eyes, filled with love and sorrow.
"Don't say it. Don't say anything, okay? I don't need to hear it, okay?" Danny says, feeling his pounding heartbeat. Seems like it's going to jump out of his chest if he doesn't say those three fucking words. Steve has already said them, so why couldn't he?
That's the question Danny always asks himself. Why the hell he can't say these three words if they are on the verge of death? It's not the first time, at all. And it's about saying "I love you" and not about death. However... No, no time for that now. So, he's been saying those words for a few years so far. But the thing is... The thing is that when they are so close to death, these words become very real. It's not just "I love you, man" or "I love you" way you can say to your friends. No, It is the I love you I love you. And Steve has already confessed to him. Long time ago and even right now. He confessed his love to him and Danny is too terrified to answer back. Not because of the bomb that can explode at any time. He is scared because when he says these words, they will become too real. He'll have to deal with them somehow, and Danny isn't sure that he's ready for this. Not now. Maybe sooner or later, but not now.
***
But time flies and at the present moment, they are almost trapped with the bomb. Yeah, trapped, because there is no escape from this part of the island so quickly that the bomb won't reach them. And Danny is scared for the second time (or the third, there is no need to count, with Steve it's always like this, both good and bad way). He is scared for his friend. For his Steve. For his... Oh God, anything can go wrong. These batteries may not save Steve, or the bomb will explode and two of them will be dead. What if... What if he says it. Right now.
There is an invisible hand that squeezes Danny's neck, preventing him from it. No, he can't. He can't.
"I don't have anything, I'm sorry. Good luck," says Danny and... Good luck? Really, Danny? Good luck?
He just goes and takes the cover, as Steve had told him. Steve will be good. They all will be good. At least it's what he is saying to himself, hoping that it would stop his heart from aching so badly for the unpronounced words.
***
Now it is safe. They are at Steve's house, and Danny is not sure what he is doing here after spending an hour in the hospital with Steve. Their ears are still ringing, but at least now they are able to hear each other.
"So, what about "Steve's" restaurant? Have you decided on the interior yet?" Steve, as always, doesn't want to listen to him.
"It is a horrible idea. Horrible. No one would go to this restaurant if I named it like that," replies Danny, closing his eyes.
"So, are you saying that "Danny's" would be better?"
"I'm not saying anything. And I don't want to say anything. Silence. Silence is what I need right now, Steve," sighs Danny. He is surprised that after it, Steve really goes silent. Unpredictable.
Danny turns his head to look at his friend.
"Oh shut up," Danny shuts his eyes and turns his head away.
"I'm not saying anything!" Steve almost shouts. His ears are in a worse state than his.
"Yeah, but you are expecting me to say something," Danny opens his eyes and sighs deeply again.
"No, I'm not, Danny. I'm not expecting anything. Really."
And they are silent again. Danny is in his thoughts. He can say these three words right now, they are not in danger anymore, and it wouldn't fully count as a confession, right? Wrong. It would. Because... He doesn't know exactly why, but it wouldn't be just "yeah, pal, love you too."
"Well, you didn't kill us, so maybe, only maybe, but I will think about naming my restaurant in honor of our names. Not only yours," Danny rolls his eyes. "But for real, it's better to think about it more."
"Oh really?" Steve puts on his pure smile and oh fuck Danny's heart starts melting and aching. Again. He is a coward. He really is. He can't say those three fucking words just because it will become real. Just because he doesn't know how it will end up. What would happen next? If anything at all happens. Danny is always thinking of horrible ways something could end up. And he doesn't want it with Steve. And he can't say It because he wants everything to be alright, he wants everything to be stable. Like this, like now. Because losing stability is not an option for him, right? And losing Steve means losing stability and...
"I love you," Danny spits out. He looks at Steve. Steve's face relaxes, he doesn't take his eyes off Danny, and Danny sees how a gentle smile widens on his beautiful lips.
"I love you too," Steve answers, still looking at Danny with so lovable smile that... that Danny wants to say it again. Wants to kiss these beautiful lips, to taste them.
The warm feeling is interrupted by light fear. He has said it. He said those words, so what now? It was a confession, so everything is going to change now, right?
"I'll bring beer," suddenly says Steve and stands up.
Danny feels relief. It will change, he is sure. But now they can just sit and drink beer, take some rest and be happy that they and a half of the island made it out alive.
For today it is definitely enough.
