I try not to make a lot of original posts on topics I don't actually have any expertise on, but I haven't seen a whole lot of posts going around that actually... explain what happened and why? Like, the actual order of events, the history, and so on. I want to reblog reference posts and explanations by people who actually know what they're talking about, but I haven't seen anything that hits the buttons I need to actually get a political situation... but I have seen some stuff on other platforms.
So here are some videos I've personally found useful in understanding Israel-Palestine, because that's the format I've found most useful in processing information of this nature:
Why Israel was Originally Attacked from RealLifeLore (explains the decades of political dynamics, internal demographic tensions, and power shifts leading up to the current conflict; notably the best I've seen at actually explaining what 'Israeli Occupation' actually means)
Israel-Hamas War: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) (commentary on the actual current situation in terms of who's getting attacked, why, and what the international ramifications so far are)
What's Happening in Israel and Why with Nathan Thrall from Adam Conover, series Factually (a discussion with an on-the-ground journalist about what life was like on the ground for Palestinian people in the areas under Israeli control during the last few years, just up to the attacks themselves)
I'm not going to claim these are comprehensive or completely unbiased (there are a few moments where I'm not entirely sure of the bias levels myself), but for people like myself who came into all this unsure of what the actual situation even is, I think these are a solid set to build up an basic understanding from which to put together opinions on future information.
I can't tell anyone what to think about how or why any of this is happening. I can only really tell you that what's going on right now is a crime on the level of attempted genocide, and that the years leading up to that have been an absolute mess on almost all fronts.
Again, I have no expertise on this subject. I just know what kind of video essay, political commentary, and interview style makes things understandable to me, personally, and might work for others. Please be courteous and kind in the comments and tags, as I am only sharing this because I haven't seen such a resource making the rounds yet, not actually trying to sway anyone in a particular direction beyond "the mass death needs to stop."
If you know of similar, relatively unbiased* resources, feel free to share.
* By 'relatively unbaised,' I don't mean taking or not taking a side; I just mean that it doesn't try to hide some information or other in favor of pushing a narrative, doesn't try to generalize a population, or doesn't seem to be trying to use emotional gut reactions to get readers or viewers to jump past reason or compassion.
The highlight of my weekend was spending it with a friend who has not finished or really read scum villain but has heard my rants and being in the ocean as the waves are brutal full of joy and energy as they try to dig at my broken psyche by telling me that I'm obsessed because 'You just want to ride Binghe's massive dick and grip his big ol tiddies.'
You cannot comprehend how flat I fell in the water from laughing thinking they were making a joke as the waves slammed my ass back to shore. Truly that was the closest I've come to dying in ages. Without a shred of irony they looked me in the eyes and said, "But don't you?"
It has never occurred to me that anyone who would willingly want to fuck binghe outside of one unhinged reddit man.
They proceeded to get increasingly more concerned listing out random characters and were like 'what about Qinghua? Don't you want to fuck the rat man?"
"I'm not fucking the rat man, I am the rat man and we're both crying your honor. The polycule is fucking in shambles my dude!!!"
Unnecessarily ranking my muses' sleeping habits because it's 3 am so evidently mine are shit.
Sally - Sleeps. Light sleeper, fast reflexes, gun under the pillow. Naps at her nightshift job like your dad does at 10 pm in front of the tv - arms crossed, chin on her chest, scowling for some reason.
Vannie - Sleeps. Like a human, actually, just during the day. Why buy an overpriced coffin when you can get a beautiful four poster with thick drapes for the same price and just put it in the basement?? Sorry to other vampires but she's different. Does it look like a sex dungeon, yes, but some ladies are into that.
Silas - Sleeps. Full mountain man style. Log-like, often nude, no covers, face down and at constant risk of suffocation. The feral urge to Burrow TM. Snores like a woodchipper.
The Guide - Sleeps? Doesn't slumber. Her situation is very 'raised by wolves' so she adopted some part of the wraiths' lifestyle after her memory loss. Sort of stands or sits motionless, eyes open. Fully checked out. Has perfected the art of napping during council meetings.
Matthew - Do dreams sleep? No, but human habits are hard to kick. He still curls up in the library and rests his eyes from time to time.
Constance - Doesn't sleep. Though he does occasionally wander into the Tower's depths and re-emerge days later with newfound wisdom from the entity's omniscience. Kind of like a robot vacuum automatically going to its lil stand to charge before scuttling off again. A man has to embark on a road to enlightenment from time to time.
Nikodemus - Does being dead count? Horribly disordered sleeper unbothered with shit like comfortability or safety. It's a cointoss whenever he knocks out randomly - you could be looking at minutes or days. Though these days he's still riding the high from that one 50 year nap he took in the 100s AD. Known to sleepwalk and talk on rare occasion.
you know what I think is ironic and horribly, horribly sad, but I can’t stop thinking about it?
C!Techno’s Syndicate name was Protesilaus, right? The first of the Greeks to fall in the Trojan war. According to the myths, the Oracle told the Greeks that the first man ashore would die- and that came true, as Protesilaus was killed when he stepped ashore. And I think we all assumed it was some big buildup to lore, that Technoblade never dies and this huge huge twist at the end of everything.
And now- even though it sucks, I can’t help thinking that it might have also been about this. That maybe he knew he’d be the first to go, and decided on the name not only because it was relevant to the lore but also, in part, because of this.
Of course, we can’t and will probably never know his thoughts on the matter. I don’t know if there will be some sort of scrapped lore that it was supposed to be for that we’ll find out much, much later. I haven’t checked dates or anything, haven’t felt up to it, so I could be completely wrong, and feel free to let me know if I am. It could absolutely be that he chose it for lore purposes that we don’t know, I fully admit that.
But something in me keeps tugging on the idea that what if it was about this- whether or not he chose it for that reason or not? What if it was another goodbye, a little nod to the myths he loved and the story he made for all of us despite everything he went through? If he wanted to get one final gotcha moment in.
I can’t decide if it’s deeply depressing or deeply impressive- or, possibly, both at once, as so much of this seems to be. And I hope it isn’t being disrespectful to say that maybe he chose it for a reason- that he was starting to say his goodbyes much sooner than any of us realized. I so badly want to believe that he was at peace with his situation.
I’m gonna miss him.
I played F1 Manager 22 today and I guarantee that I’m already a better race strategist than the Ferrari team this year.
Of course, I’m managing the lads at McLaren, but I might sneak a save file in of managing Ferrari just to see how it goes.
Everyday i think about this screenboard scene that got semi-scrapped from Donnie vs Witch Town, like it just explains so much about Donnie as a character and i’m very sad we didnt get to see it entirely
mission launch for minkowski's crew was in march 2013. ostensibly, they were put through some mission training, though the extent and effectiveness of that is kinda dubious. pagliacci takes place in 2013, exact date unspecified. but it has to be early. let's say... mid-january.
eiffel thought he had ruined the rest of his life before he'd even turned thirty. he probably spent his thirtieth birthday in jail. and then... for some number of days, weeks, maybe even a couple of months, he exists in this state of, well. of limbo. cutter gets him released from prison, and flies him out to canaveral. he doesn't speak to his family, obviously. they don't want to hear from him, and don't even know. he's still a prisoner, but no one around him knows that, either. at some point in this time frame, goddard first exposes him to decima, before hilbert even knows who he is. and he lives wherever goddard is accommodating him, and he has to go about his day-to-day life in this transitory state between a 26-year sentence he'd just started really grappling with, and the very immediate reality he's now about to be sent into deep space instead.
they give him a certain amount of freedom; it's not like he can go anywhere. he doesn't do much, anyway, is not feeling appreciative for his momentary second chance at life, given the circumstances. he blows off most of his mission training, and they're surprisingly lax about that, which in retrospect probably should have been a sign. he sits around and smokes, mostly. gets takeout food. but he goes to see movies, as much as he can. as much as he wants to punish himself, he needs to do something, or he'll go crazy, and it's not like he'll get a chance to see a movie in a long time. he was already resigning himself to maybe never going to a movie theater again.
the film adaptation of les misérables was released in december 2012. it's entirely feasible it could've been one of the movies he saw in this time period. i think the idea adds some resonance to his shared reference with minkowski in the finale, at least, in the way it pulls things full circle. intentionally or otherwise. and, incidentally, the 2012 film adaptation of les misérables, a story that notably features an ex-convict protagonist seeking redemption, was released on december 25th. call that serendipity.
Look at my babies! I'm so excited to finally be showing you guys this! It would have gotten done earlier but i kept having to put it aside b/c i knew what i wanted to do but couldn't figure out how to do it. but it is here! Almost exactly how i wanted it to look!
