The air crackled for a moment, and one of the wine glasses broke untouched. “Do you know what I was to him, next to her?” The sudden drop in volume of his voice was enough to chill the air around him. “Nothing. I couldn’t hold a candle to her while holding literal candles.” Frighteningly even in tone, almost conversational, Merlin asked, “How dare you imply that he would ever do that to her, or that I have any right to her place – ” The tapers on the table flared and then went out, the only remaining light filtering in from the kitchen behind Merlin. “ – that I would steal her husband from her own bed – ” He balled his hands into fists on the table, suddenly shaking, and cursed at the top of his lungs, “Fuck you! Guinevere deserved respect, and I am no one’s fucking side piece!” “Merlin!” Leon yelled. Then in an effort to deescalate, “You’re scaring her.” From the timbre of his voice, he was scaring Leon too. Merlin took his hands from the table and straightened, bristling. “Oh, I’m scaring her?” Incredulous, Arthur demanded, “What the hell are you doing?” In response, Merlin said again, frighteningly reasonable, “I’m scaring her, Arthur. She’s scared.” Then he lunged forward. Arthur and Leon both seized at his arms to hold him back. The stench of wild magic invaded Arthur’s nostrils and threatened to make him cough. Ignoring them both, Merlin stretched his face as near to Lainey as he could get it and coldly informed her, “You have no idea what real fear is.”

DKoS Bruce being a loyal knight to the family that's sitting on what could so easily be his throne makes me so crazy.

He knew he was a bastard since birth. He was a child to a king and queen but had exactly zero claim to the throne with a best friend who would, upon Bruce's parents' deaths, get to be that prince he never was.

His extreme loyalty and protectiveness of the El's since he was a child, like he's making up for the shame of his birth and serving his kingdom by protecting the best people he knows' spot as its leaders.

A Wayne loyalist tried to put him on the throne when he was 11 and his response was to learn exactly how the El's could be killed, take down the man who wanted them dead, get rid of the only thing that could harm them by any means possible, and swear his undying loyalty to them.

Revealing they are brothers to his oldest friend and getting attempted murdered for it???? Like these people you loved and served for so long only wanted you around as long as you were less than them? As long as you were a loyal servant and not an equal (& a threat)??

It all makes me so insane and I wish the series had been a bit more medieval political drama to focus on it...

um ok i actually went into ao3 to see if i was maybe not the only person this specific kind of insane on the internet and. well i might be because there were zero hits but there's actually an unexpected [1] amount of agatha christie fics?? 1-2 for specific books. as for specific detectives: 2 for parker pyne. 10 for tommy and tuppence. 14 for mr quin. 159 for miss marple. 341 for poirot. slay.

#a lot of it seems to be just detective stories etc but there is in fact poirot smut. go grandpa! #anyway for those who don't know agatha christie books take up more than a shelf of my bookshelf. maybe a third of my physical books are her #mostly bc its easy to pick up a pocket edition for funsies at the bookshop (used or new) + i mostly read ebooks these days (thanks libgen) #contemporary sff / horror can be hard to find physical bc they dont always get translated. those that do take a while #like maybe i wasnt paying attention but i only saw gideon the ninth in the flesh this year #it was a hardcover even. yuck. i wonder how they translated some of the jokes #i know that when i read the magnus chase books they didn't translate singular they properly it was so sucks #like babe you can afford to do research on gender neutral language in your country. we have like five neopronouns just pick one #just use elu instead of writiing a nonsensical plural 'eles' in the middle of the sentence. come on. #i never did finish that series. is it still coming out? i read the first two books and theyre fine but theyre teen books

Final thoughts on iron widow are that it is very fun to watch someone break stuff for a couple hundred pages but that it was pretty overhyped as anything beyond that. If it wasn't marketed as this groundbreaking feminist ThingTM I would have liked it more I think bcos politically it's a bit incoherent besides being very firm that girl power Is Good and sacrificing girls to be car batteries for mechs is Bad. Boo the patriarchy. Did Wu Zetian effectively utilize girl power when she slaughtered innocent people in her big dragon suit? etc

One thing I didn't pay nearly as much attention to in my first custom card set as I should have, is the ideologies associated with the color pie. I for the most part just went off of vibes without putting any thought into where the character's ideals and goals would put them color pie wise. One big example being this.

The idea of whether or not destiny is set in stone, and people are put into the world to fill specific roles, is a rather important part of the story, especially concerning certain characters.

All of these following characters very strongly believe that certain people are created to do certain things

And as you may notice, I made none of them green. Hell, even worse, most of these are black, which is all about free will, and explicitly against this view of destiny. (Now, none of these characters believe that free will doesn't exist, but they do strongly believe that you should prioritize doing what you're supposed to over doing what you want, which is a very not black thing. Only exception is Damira, who while believing that the gods do have plans for certain people, has no judgement about whether or not you want to follow that plan.)

And to add to that, the one character who explicitly does not believe in having a specific purpose in life? The one who not only explicitly goes against that belief, but also has pretty strong feelings about destiny not existing?

... yeah.

#now if you actually read the story I don't know how well these traits are set up #compared to how important they're supposed to be #because when I first started writing it I didn't plan much of that #and I don't wanna go back and change things now because I just wanna keep going 'til I finish it #I also won't fix any of these cards because I just wanna work on the second set now #where I do take all this into consideration more #although this specific theme isn't that relevant #but you know what I mean #also these are really only one example of me not properly caring about the color pie #there's plenty more of that in that set

I got a book of short stories from the library that I've been excited to read ever since I heard from the writer who I follow on IG that her debut book was coming out (I think it came out a little over a month ago now), and god, it is so, so good to not only read fiction again but to read it in a collection of short stories format! Not to be weird (but whatever; I'll be weird about it, I don't care) but the limitations of the short story form practically make me salivate because I am absolutely in awe of and savoring every single word, every single description, every single little piece of dialogue that is in each story. It's just amazing how writers can bring short stories to life - to choose to limit themselves to only the most essential elements of a story in order to tell it. Holy fuck it's good, and I'm realizing again that I might very well be obsessed with short stories. I do, after all, choose to read short story anthologies again and again and again, and books of short stories by a single author are also not in limited supply on my bookshelf. :') I love them, I love them, I love them.
