#I think Maya Phoenix and Pearl should get to be angry
some-zer0 · 1 year
Text
Forever obsessed with the way that Bridge to the Turnabout revolves around Morgan, Diego, Iris, and Misty deciding they alone know what's best for the people they care about, with that assumption being inherently false due to it having been constructed on outdated, heavily biased memories
Morgan wants Pearl to be Master because SHE wanted to be Master, so she assumes her plan's the best thing for Pearl, even though we can clearly see that it would ruin Pearl's life
Diego's using Maya as a proxy for Mia, believing that since he couldn't save Mia he has to save Maya, but his grief blinds him to the fact that he doesn't actually have a personal relationship with Maya
Iris is, once again, going along with a plan because she assumes others know best, but she's also an ambiguous enough character that you could interpret her as trying to fulfill an obligation to Pearl (her sister), Maya (the future Master), and Phoenix (who she wasn't able to protect last time)
And Misty is trying to save her daughter, but she's also the one who ran away when Mia and Maya were children, thereby putting them directly in danger of Fey clan politics in the first place
Diego, Iris, and Misty have multiple opportunities to tell Pearl, Phoenix, or Maya what's going on, but they're so set on viewing them a certain way that they can't see them as they really are. Like, Phoenix has been Maya's closest friend and biggest supporter since Mia's death, and he's a major caretaker of Pearl too, so why not let him know what's happening? Pearl genuinely doesn't know what Morgan's asking her to do -- she could almost certainly be talked out of the channeling if she understood that Maya would be in danger, so why not tell her? And Maya has already been involved in several extremely dangerous situations, including a previous plot by Morgan, so why not tell her? Especially since it's her life on the line?
Bridge to the Turnabout is a story of good intentions, but ultimately all that those good intentions did was rob Maya, Pearl, and Phoenix of their agency and lead to unnecessary tragedy

okay okay hear me out maya and diego for the duo bingo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I KNEW I COULD COUNT ON YOU GUYS youre my bestest friends for ever and ever. thank you for indulging me. ok ok ok frankly its literally CRIMINAL that for a relationship that is like literally half the crux of the final case of aa3 there is like. no content . at all. and it breaks my poor heart into PIECES its really truly does. like ok the thing is people only ever seem interested in exploring this relationship via mia but the problem is 1) i dont want it to just be about mia. yes obviously mia is the springboard for this relationship's existence in the first place since she's maya's older sister and diego's girlfriend but like come on guys you are all SO..... sigh. this is such wasted potential. come on 2) THEY NEVER DO ANYTHING INTERESTING WITH ITTTTT
okay because like. personally i think mia & maya's relationship is infinitely more interesting if maya has incredibly complicated feelings that she simply is trying really really hard not to address. like because in aa3 i think if you present mia's profile to maya, maya says that she really misses her and phoenix asks why she doesnt just ask pearl to channel her, and maya gives some complete bs non response of "ohhh i wouldnt want to burden her" or something. which makes no sense. like come on guys. really. anyways maya is the kind of person who really doesnt hold grudges - when people to terrible things her first response is generally more to sympathize with the victim and less getting angry at the perpetrator. even with the mask demasque case where she was a literal victim, she gets mad at phoenix for wanting to defend ron for like a few minutes before letting it blow over and moving on. furthermore, like any ace attorney character, maya also really loves avoiding her problems and trying super hard to Not Think About Them.
with this in mind i think the most interesting way to interpret her relationship with mia is that she does actually feel resentment towards her for frolicking off into the distance to become a lawyer and to some degree kind of abandoning her in the same way that their mom did, but the problem is because its maya her internal thought process goes "i am frustrated at mia for leaving me alone -> but mia loved me -> if mia loved me she wouldnt have wanted to hurt me -> therefore, the problem here is me unjustly feeling hurt as opposed to mia hurting me even if it was unintentional" and she would feel so guilty about having any sort of resentment towards mia (especially now that shes literally Dead) that she loops back around to pretending everything is Normal and Fine and Good so that she doesnt spiral into a guilt feedback loop. NOW. with this in mind.
ive already talked about this a bit between my art post and my mildly extended thoughts which im not going to bother repeating here so go read that if youre interested in the cuter details but objectively i think the best possible ending for diego is after he does his prison time, maya & pearl invite him to come live with them (he doesnt have a job, he presumably has no living relatives, and most importantly he's adjusting to having a significant disability in the world after spending the past like 5 years in prison and therefore absolutely somebody who should not be living alone right now). now ive already talked a bit about the cute stuff because like ok yes . i do enjoy some good domestic shenanigans. however . the fey family period drama is nothing if not full of mental illness and this needs some addressing.
both maya & diego have like . severe issues. with avoiding their personal problems but fortunately for us, . in the words of my good friend. avoiding your problems is really really hard when you invite them to live with you. because like the thing is - and something i think frankly doesnt get addressed enough in anything attempting to explore this relationship in the direction i want - is that ...... maya literally. she couldve died. yes he did put his life on the line to save her and yes that does mean something but also he literally let her walk into that situation in the first place, absurdly bad mental issues or not. and frankly i think maya SHOULD have complicated feelings on it i want that for her. obviously this would follow the same train of thought process as with mia in the sense of "well he saved me and if he wasnt there i Literally Would Have For Real Died and pearl wouldve been forced to live with my blood on her hands (dahlia possession or no) so i cant feel resentful a bit at all or else that makes me a Bad Person". and of course there's the wonderful added complication of the fact that the entire BttT situation is intimately connected to mia with whom she Already has Complicated Feelings That She Is Trying Really Hard To Pretend She Doesn't Have on. there's been a million things said on diegos many many mental issues and i already touched on that very briefly anyways in the earlier linked thought post so im not going to repeat the whole spiel but in short its my opinion that he definitely wanted to have his little redemption by death by the end of BttT but I Won't Let Him. hes not getting off the hook that easy. anyways obviously by the end of this whole thing the Issues come to a head and there is some sort of a serious conversation about the current Situation and obviously not everythings magically fixed, but now that we're not aggressively boxing up our uglier emotions and pretending they dont exist they can actually start getting addressed.
on a lighter note 1) this is very much like an edgeworth & kay situation where its like. diego is too obnoxious to not have a weird little girl following him around and making fun of him all the time to take his ego down a peg or two and 2) also as i said in that other post i wholeheartedly believe maya deserves as many older sibling figures as her heart desires <3 hes like basically her older brother in law anyways . also wait before you go take the gif thats looping in my head like a good 20% of the day

I understand why Diego was blaming Phoenix. What else was he supposed to do? He got out of a hell, and immediately found himself in a new one.
- If he blamed only himself, he would not have survived. - He definitely can't blame Mia for not ask Phoenix for help. She is the victim and his love. - And he can't blame the killer. Mia has already thrown him into a prison. He's not available, so this is useless. - There remains only Phoenix. Well, Diego had a strong antipathy towards him anyway. Even without his involvement in hiding the poison, Phoenix is still a stranger who is in Mia's place and role.
The most common act in his situation is the revenge. But he was deprived of it because the justice prevailed without him. And he woke up alone. I know the game doesn't talk about it, but do you understand that if Mia had told Phoenix and Maya about Diego, the plot wouldn't have happened, right? Ironically, Maya and Phoenix still became his reason to live. He got up in the mornings to hate Phoenix and protect Maya. Was it right? Well, this coping strategy saved his life, so yeah, I guess.
You know, I think Mia and Diego are very similar. I'm sure that Mia was investigating Redd White alone because she was afraid that the tragedy would happen again. She blamed herself for Fawles's death, and she certainly blamed herself for Diego's coma. I think Diego and Mia both prefer to silently suffer alone, be strong and feel guilty about things they have no control over. And they both need retribution. Mia chased the people who ruined her life until her death. Diego, on the other hand, did not have the opportunity to imprison his enemies legally, so his pain became destructive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Important detail. 1) Diego is a self-confident person and believes that he could protect Mia. He projects it onto Phoenix. But does it make sense? Does he think Phoenix is cool like him? No. Does he think everyone should be cool? No, in the game, he said many times that a person makes mistakes and this is normal. It looks like a cover, not a real projection. For example, when Phoenix accused Luke Atmey (case about the stolen urn) that he hid the DeMasque's calling card from the police and did not seek help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Diego after the coma is really self-confident or..? Diego is not focusing on Mia's death in this dialogue. And not even on a revenge. He says Phoenix didn't care. That was what angry him the most. Phoenix looked happy while Diego suffere. And more importantly, Diego blamed himself, and believed that in his place it would have been so with everyone (good adequate people), including Phoenix. But he mistaken. I'm pretty sure Diego is clinically depressed, Phoenix is not. And Diego doesn't realize it. Or doesn't want to, I’m sure that his doctors warned him that he falls into the category of risk. Ironically, when he was a defence attorney, he must have encountered a victims of crime who felt irrational guilt, and this must have resented him. Now he's in their place. I don't think Diego can be a defence attorney again, by the way. Survivors victims often become prosecutors, because they want to fight criminals (this happened to Miles too, even his attitude towards defence attorneys has changed). They lack the kindness and faith to protect a potential killer because they have a trauma. And they have a lot more empathy for the victim and their family
Tumblr media
Even Phoenix could not stand this pity party of self-blaming! (skip)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not sure that Phoenix is a more reliable person than you or Maya's mother, but ok.  The fact that you ask for help TWO people for safety is already very good. Who knew they'd screw up? Well, okay, all three of you closed eyes to the opportunity to get more allies, and it's clear why. Diego, Iris and Misty feel guilty. They was afraid to speak directly to Maya (+phoenix in case of iris), and therefore prefered to protect her in secret. They are ready to die for her, but not to talk. They wouldn't even dare to tell Pearl the cruel truth about her mother. Depressed idiots. And one more thing. Maya has never visited Diego in the hospital and doesn't even know he exists. He felt abandoned. He obviously doesn't blame her for this, but I'm not surprised he avoids her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's hard to live without sweet fantasy... Well, realising of mistakes is certainly good, but I would prefer the consent to visit a psychotherapist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Umm, yes, it's easy to do when you see your mentor at every court trial.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeeey, he approved Phoenix as her heir! ...and put him on a pedestal because he hates himself. I find it insanely amusing that Diego's only completed arc wasn't about overcoming his mental injuries, It’s was about his relates to Phoenix. About acceptance of him. This is the most phoenix-centric character in the entire game! After von Karma siblings who always ignore him, it's very flattering... (I love it) Bonus

“Good Evening everyone and welcome to the wonder bar! I’m Trucy Gramarye and I’ll be your magician for tonight!” The crowd erupted into Applause. “Tonight I’m joined by my amazing assistant Apollo Justice,” Apollo blushed a little and waved, making the audience laugh.
“Go Polly!”
“You’re doing great you two!”
“Stand tall horn head!”
“Without further ado, let’s get this show on the road!” The lights went out for a second before the spot light turned on and the show began.
“Shit!” Jove yelled as he ran into the bar through a wall. “Damn it! I missed the opening.”
“Your son looked about ready to die,” Metis chuckled. “ I don’t think the laughing helped.”
The back of the wonder bar was empty except for a bartender, as everyone else wanted a good view of the show. This left it open to be inhabited by a group of spectators who frequented this bar. Dhurke, Metis, Jove, Gregory, Mia, Misty, and Clay sat at the bar with their drinks, watching the show. Although Dhurke was normally in Khura’in, watching over his family, he was here since Rayfa and Nahyuta were visiting with Apollo on business. Trucy had roped Apollo in along with help from her mother, who said she’d love to see them perform together at least once.
Misty and Mia had been last minute additions to tonight's group, as Maya and Pearl surprised the WAA with a visit. The parents always followed their children, and met up when they were all nearby in LA. Usually to catch one of Trucy’s shows at the wonder bar. They once followed their children to one of Klavier Gavin’s shows, only to listen to Jove complain that his ears were bleeding the whole time.
“He’ll be fine,” Dhurke assured, “A dragon never yields!”
“Mr. Shadmadhi’s right, Polly will be fine! I saw him doing his chords of steel practice backstage.”
“Is that what that was?”Mia asked, “I was worried someone was dying or something.”
“It did sound rather worrisome,” Misty added. “Mr.Edgeworth, is everything alright?” She asked, turning to Gregory who hadn’t so much as greeted Jove.
They followed his gaze to see a familiar pink ghost standing on the other side of the room. Jove moved to stand, but Dhurke stopped him.
“Let him watch his daughter,” Dhurke said. “He missed a lot of her childhood, this is his way of making up for it, I’m sure.”
“He had his chance to go back and he didn’t. He ran away like a coward,” Jove spat, he very rarely got angry, but Zak never ceased to infuriate him. “He didn’t come forward when he thought he killed Tessa, and he left his daughter to a man, who at the time, had no way of supporting her.”
“Phoenix was fine though,” Gregory finally said. “But I understand your anger, I wouldn’t let Mr. Von Karma anywhere near his daughter now.” Dhurke went to let Jove stand, Gregory may have been dead the second longest, but he was the oldest. This made him the default leader of the group. Gregory stopped Jove from going anywhere. “However, we both know that’s not the reason you want him gone.”
By now, Clay and Mia had left towards the stage to let the adults talk. While they were both adults, they still understood that there were some things they should stay out of.
“So what if that’s not my whole reasoning, it’s still part of it.”
“Let’s make a compromise,” Metis said, “you can go confront him if he tries to get close to anyone. Other than that, leave him be.”
“Fine,” Jove grumbled, it was arguments like these that reminded everyone just how young he had been when he died.
“Now that that’s been sorted,” Misty said, “I believe we’ve missed a good part of the show. It seems Trucy is about to kill Apollo.”

Finally managed to figure out a Pheonix dies au where I’m happy with themes lining up better
So, obvious one - Pheonix dies rather than Mia
- Edgeworth still takes that case, he prosecutes harshly and nearly lets redd white escape, Pheonix is channeled and saves the day with the receipt before suggest Mia “played by Redd White’s rules”
- Edgeworth is shocked at seeing Pheonix and curiosity gets the better of him, Pheonix notices him and they talk, Pheonix says something about “Wishing the rumours weren’t true” and wishing he had more time to do what he set out to do, to fix whatever happened to edgeworth
- After the confession of Pheonix’s intentions, Mia comments that Edgeworth must have been the friend Pheonix was talking about saving all those years ago - Edgeworth seems upset and says something about “unnecessary feelings over such a foolsih old friend”
- Edgeworth leaves, he doesn’t leave a cryptic note but Gumshoe mentions that he “doesn’t seem like he intents to come back anytime soon” in passing
- Instead, the next cases involve Lana Skye - leading up to Rise from the Ashes as the fourth case not fifth - DL6 passes without incident - Edgeworth never learns the truth
- SL-9 is changed ever so slightly - during the investigation Ema Skye learns more about the case and ends up believing that she is the culprit fully - Mia doesn’t bring it up but Ema confesses leading to a simailr situation to DL6. For obvious reasons Edgeworth isn’t involved
- On top of this, Gant is destroyed for SL-9 but Von Karma is beaten for the other case - he murdered as he feels that Mia brought shame to the von Karma name by making Edgeworth run away and “ruining his perfect plans for revenge” - it isnt till much later that what this means is fully realised
- Lana doesn’t disappear fully like edgeworth did at the resolution but instead stops allowing Mia to visit - insisting that  she just “reminds her of what she should have been”
- Game two is mostly unchanged - however Pearl was introduced in game 1 or at least mentioned, Lana is allowed to prosecute for simon reasons by the time farewell my turnabout occurs - she is helping out instead of Edgeworth aka the reoccuring prosecutor
- At some point, Diego wakes up and becomes a mentor - working alongside Mia but usually not going into court - its up to you their relationship but tbh at this point I’m kind of doing both ships at once here so uhhhhhh idk
- In game three, Edgeworth is back and angry - he’s still got the guilt of DL6 added to the guilt of Pheonix and the anger of his death...its not a pretty sight tbh. He’s detemined to beat Mia like Franziska but something is clearly different about it.
- Bridge to turnabout occurs and Lana returns and posecutes - its more of a “wow this what the other side deals with and wow she trusts me” affair (for the fun of it, Pheonix is sitll the one who ran over the burning bridge, Mia channelled him to talk to Larry for a little closure and because she couldnt be bothered to deal with him and it all went horribly wrong)
- There’s an extra player now - Morgan heard about Von Karma’s need for revenge and felt it could be interesting to explore and was originally used as a sort of back up plan to confuse if anyone had intercepted - Diego had and brought on Edgeworth on a whim due to the von karma mention
- Both Dailiha and Von Karma were channelled that day, with Diego meeting Daliha but stopping before anything happened (hesitating for a second due to thinking of Mia and then she escapes) and Edgeworth catching Von Karma trying to hurt Maya - Von Karma taunts him and admits to killing his father.
- Edgeworth admits that at first it was to protect Maya - he realised over his time how much Pheonix cared for the Fey’s and how he was wrong to prosecute them both and how he could never pay for doing that but in the end it was some sick form of revenge
- Pheonix refuses to believe at first but then realises it's true
- Edgeworth makes some sad comment of “Maybe this way I will be seeing you soon Phoenix, in whatever is after this life”

what about love? i never mentioned love
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/N3gHK5n
by cassibee
Despite all that, though, he really did love it. The fact that he also hated it a little bit was irrelevant; only actors got to enjoy the show the whole time. He was the one who had to put in the work, had to deal with the messy parts and the conflicts and the budgeting and the angry parents who thought they could yell at his house manager on closing night because they had forgotten to purchase a ticket and that was all his fault, somehow.
To him, though, the same reason he should have hated it was also kind of the appeal. When something inevitably went horribly, miserably wrong, he could pick up the shattered pieces and force them back into their proper places. The unpredictable became predictable, thanks to him. The imperfect became perfect.
Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth (and the rest of the characters) are all a part of Ivy University's theatre club, and it's tech week for their spring production of Legally Blonde. Antics ensue, as is to be expected.

- reminds him too much of bttt and falling
- yes i think capcom should have realized that falling off a damn bridge should give a man a good bit of upset and trauma capcom i am outside your door
- miles bottles up his feelings A LOT because there wasn’t any place for feelings in the von karma house. he’s trying to get better though
- he mostly bottles up his anger because he sees mvk in himself whenever he gets angry because mvk would be angry a lot
- fran also does the same but with any happiness or personal pride she may feel
- they both try to work on it, maya and phoenix are good influences on them
- miles has visited mvk in jail once. he won’t again
- franziska will never visit him

-edgeworth and phoenix go often to a little coffee shop and always get a pot of tea
-sometimes phoenix brings flowers
-LMAO edgeworth asks what they are sometimes and unless they’re the two types of flowers phoenix knows he has No Idea
- the bathroom at wright and co is haunted
- maya attracts ghosts like nobodies business
-fran is afraid of spiders and maya is Violent towards spiders
- fran will shriek from the other room and maya will run in flip flop in hand, take one look around the room, and chuck her shoe at the spider. she never misses.
-maya LOVES that bakery they investigated in that one case i cannot remember the name of the one with the like. french dude? and tigre?

-maya loves decorating the office for holidays
-the only thing phoenix can make well is soup and hot chocolate and he makes them at least twice a month when it’s cold
-edgeworth won’t admit it but he’d rather eat phoenixs almost burnt soup and melted bar hot chocolate than the stuff from the fanciest restaurants
- when edgeworth and phoenix propose they both propose at the same time and it’s so awkward but so so funny they both say yes of course but phoenix will tell that story to anyone who listens
ok that’s all for now! idk if i have any more (that’s a lie i have so many thoughts about them but idk how many of them are coherent) anyway i wish you best of luck with all the hubbub!!!
everything is going well thank you for the concern!! housing sent someone out to fix up the hole in my wall that they were coming through and the pest control guy just left and is now treating the outside of the building. these are absolutely helping me deal with the stress so thank you for sending them in!
starting strong with the clothing thing, i love love LOVE your interpretation of the fey clan so much. it is canon in my brain now. capcom wishes they could think of this shit. also giving some to lana? precious, sentimental, amazing. lanamia nation rise up. thank you for my life. the detail about maya believing in cryptids and the bathroom being haunted? accurate and hilarious. and yes big agree that she still likes tres bien (i’m pretty sure that’s the name), she worked there briefly so of course she’d have a soft spot for it. i literally adore the idea of maya being hella Into Stuff, like cryptids and holiday decorations and winning at game night, and the scrapbook idea slayed me on sight. i am in tears.
LITERALLY WHY DOES CAPCOM IGNORE THAT PHOENIX HAS BEEN THROUGH SOME SHIT??? like what the hell. man almost died and then like two days later he’s like “lol i’m Completely Fine :)”. unrealistic. capcom let him be Affected by experiences please.
kinda building off of that, AGAIN WITH THE WRIGHTWORTH STUFF MAKING ME TENDER??? i love them goin on little dates and being domestic... art museums and coffee shops and phoenix being Dumb about flower breeds and miles loving his cooking.... i am Soft i am Yearning. AND THE PROPOSAL THING!!!!! I HAD THIS SAME FUCKING IDEA GET OUT OF MY BRAIN!!!!! IT’S JUST SUCH A THEM THING TO DO...
and oooh edgeworth. good for you king, journaling and knitting and stimming and learning healthy ways to cope with your emotions. also the anger thing i totally get. like not to Overshare or anything but i used to have a lot of issues expressing my anger because when i did it reminded me too much of my dad so i feel that.
the vk sibling stuff also spot-on tbh. good that they didn’t visit manfred except for miles’ one time. fuck that guy. let him rot. they are Learning and Growing together.... fran letting miles win at a game also perfect. she cares about her little brother even if she has trouble showing it sometimes. also love that her one weakness is spiders. that seems very fitting to me and i LOVE the image of maya just. chuckin a shoe across the room to defend her Wife from the eight-legged terror.
also you are free to send me incoherent thoughts if you want that’s the form most of my thoughts take anyway fjnfjsf i’d still love to hear them if you’re willing to share!

My Issue With Narumayo and Narumitsu Shippers
Just to be clear, I have nothing against Narumayo. The only issue I have with it is that I don’t like colleague dating, especially if it is an employee hooking up with their boss. Though, this is only a pet peeve at best and it isn’t illegal. I just consider it distasteful and I feel no different about Justicykes. Though, this isn’t about that or my distaste for Narumayo. I just wanted to make it clear I don’t have anything against anyone that may like Narumayo. You can like whatever ship you want or not like whatever ship you don’t like. It’s your right. Same with Narumitsu, since I am a fan of that ship myself.
That being said, I will call out any BS claims about a ship by those that oppose it. I’m talking about both sides. Just to be clear, the “fans” of both ships that do this are a very small minority compared to the entire Narumayo/Narumitsu fan base. It just goes without saying that the more eggs you place in the carton, the more bad eggs you will find in that carton, even if it is a small percentage or number.
For the Narumayo fans, I am talking about the claim that the opposing ship fans cherry picks reasons from canon as reasons for their ship being canon, even though they’re not proof that the two parties are in love and could just as much equal a platonic relationship. I mostly see this from Narumayo fans towards Narumitsu shippers where they make fun of how Narumitsu shippers depend on the “Unnecessary feelings” line as their reason they support their ship. Point taken, except don’t Narumayo shippers do the very same thing? They depend on the words from a sheltered 8-year-old little girl that doesn’t know how to read, let alone understand what romance is. I’m not going to say we Narumitsu fans never scrape the bottom of the barrel for proof that our ship is canon, but Narumayo fans literally do the very same thing.
Other reasons Narumayo shippers claim their ship is “canon” is because Phoenix is always concerned and trying to save Maya. Again, didn’t Phoenix do the same for Miles in Turnabout Goodbyes? How is Phoenix saving Miles from having his life ruined or getting the death penalty any different from saving Maya from the hands of Shelly De Killer or the Minister of Justice in a foreign nation? What? Because Phoenix saved Maya more times than Miles? Bold excuse. If that is your argument, then I guess Phoenix loves Maya more than Trucy, because he only felt concerned for her safety during the one time she was kidnapped. Phoenix saving Maya constantly doesn’t mean he’s in love with her or cares about her more than Miles or anyone else, just like Miles saying “unnecessary feelings” doesn’t mean he’s in love with Phoenix. Even though I like Narumitsu, I am aware that they are not canonly in love, just like a majority of Narumitsu and Narumayo fans, that cherry pick excuses that probably doesn’t mean romantic, already know their ship is not canon.
I do understand that many noncanon shippers that cherry pick reasons from canon that don’t equal their ship being canon can come off as annoying. They can get very obnoxious. Though, you cannot claim that your ship is better when it does the very same thing. You’re basically the pot calling the kettle black. The same would go for Narumitsu shippers that are calling out Narumayo shippers for the same thing. The only difference between Narumitsu and Narumayo is the sexuality and backstories of the characters involved in the ship. Though, to the Narumayo shippers’ defense, at least they don’t accuse the other ship of being a pedo ship. Get ready, because I’m about to rip the Narumitsu pedo accusers a new one.
Maya is NOT a minor. She owns her own place, works a full time job, pays the bills and even cared for a child only a year later. Also, being Ace Attorney takes place in Japan, the age of consent in that country is 13 years old, so 17-year-olds dating 23 or 24-year-olds is not considered pedo. Even if you were to call her a minor, by California’s standards, which already has BS laws about 10-year-old little girls being allowed to marry or have sex with older men with parental consent, Maya was only age 17 during the first three months she was with Phoenix. I doubt if he is going to remember Maya being a minor for those three months out of the 12 years they’ve known each other. Count the months between Turnabout Sisters to Turnabout Goodbyes, technically that is three and a half months in total. That is literally how long Maya was 17 years old hanging around with Phoenix. That’s hardly enough time to ask her out on a date, let alone falling in love with her.
Another thing, people like Phoenix, falling in love with young people like Maya, happens more often than you think. Again, Maya lives like an adult, so it would make just as much sense for Phoenix to be attracted to Maya, especially since she looks almost like his ex girlfriend. Men fall in love with very young women. I’m not going to say it’s tasteful, but that’s how the real world works. In the real world, men like Miles Edgeworth will date young women like Ema Skye. Yes, she was a minor when he first met her. She also grew older and of consent. I’m not saying it’s right or tasteful, but that is the real world. Men love them women young and ripe. Does it make them pedophiles? No. It’s distasteful, but they’re not pedophiles. Falling in love with someone, who is an adult, you’ve only met as a minor for a few months or so before they grew into an adult, does not count. It takes more than a few months to fall in love and even attraction itself isn’t always there when you first meet the person you are dating. With every shipper, you need to think ahead. I doubt most Narumayo shippers have their ship shipped together during the time of the first game. It’s likely they’re shipped together after the trilogy or Spirit of Justice.
In truth, both Narumayo and Narumitsu ships equally have potential. There’s no reason for either ship to go against each other. It’s petty. Neither ship is canon or makes more sense than the other. They’re equally okay, if done correctly. I’ve seen Narumayo where Miles Edgeworth is supportive of Phoenix and Maya getting together. Same with Narumitsu with Maya being highly supportive. Hell, most Narumitsu fan fictions have Maya as the one trying to pin Miles and Phoenix together like Pearl tried to do with Phoenix and Maya. Now, as I said before, I consider Narumayo distasteful, because of the employee x boss thing and the fact Maya is the younger sister of Phoenix’s dead boss. Of course, my reasons are from experiences and I know not everyone shares mine. You don’t have to like a ship and it can be for whatever reason under the sun, but that’s not a reason to accuse the opposing ship of something your ship does or of something they’re not.
Before you are to accuse a ship of being a pedo ship, always think ahead. Is the ship of an adult having romantic feelings or doing romantic things with a child? Do the shippers ship them together when either character is a minor? If no for all of them, it’s not a pedo ship. Even if character A has known character B since character B was a minor before being shipped, that doesn’t make it pedo. It might be distasteful, due to the age gap or having known the other character since they were a minor, but it is NOT a pedo ship. It only is when either character in a ship is a minor the moment they are shipped, get together, fall in love or the older one crushes on the younger. Always. think. ahead.
The same goes for any ship accusing the other of cherry picking reasons for their ship to be canon when it’s not. If your ship is also not canon, then why even call the other one out for cherry picking? Narumayo and Narumitsu cherry pick reasons for their ship being canon all the dang time. Narumitsu’s reasons for claiming their ship is canon are no more reasonable than Narumayo’s reasons for the same thing. I’ll even list the basic excuses Narumitsu shippers use to prove their ship is canon:
“I have been settled with unnecessary feelings,” Turnabout Goodbyes, Phoenix was angry at Miles for leaving him in Justice For All, Phoenix pined for Miles since he was a child, Phoenix became a Defense Attorney because of Miles two times, Phoenix helps Miles with cases more times than anyone else including Maya, Miles had helped Phoenix retrieve back his badge, they fight like a married couple in court, Miles helped Phoenix save Maya the two times she was kidnapped, Miles had helped Phoenix investigate in the two later games, Miles denying wishing for marriage in Turnabout Time Traveler, Miles bringing up Phoenix so many times that I could make a drinking game out of it in Miles Edgeworth Investigations 1 and 2, Phoenix calling Miles ‘Daddy’ in Dual Destinies, Miles telling Phoenix he should ‘strip naked’ in Farewell my Turnabout, the creator saying that Phoenix would find Miles ‘cute’ in a Steel Samurai costume and Miles telling Phoenix “as you wish” for anyone making a Princess Bride reference.
There is more, but those are all I could think of. If you can think of one reason for any Narumayo shipper to believe their ship is anymore reasonably canon than all of the Narumitsu excuses I’ve listed, I may reconsider, but I have found non. I’d argue that not all of these excuses are unreasonable to assume the two parties maybe in love. It still could mean something platonic, but it can easily mean something different, if they were the opposite sex. And yes, it’s the same with Narumayo; some of their excuses are reasonable, but that’s the point. Most of the excuses I listed are obviously dumb reasons like the “strip naked” part, but it’s not unreasonable to think there might be something more between them based on Phoenix pining for Miles or Miles constantly thinking or admiring Phoenix in his own games and comics. The same can be said for Phoenix and Maya. It’s not unreasonable to think Maya might have feelings for Phoenix based on the fact she talked about him a lot after leaving for the Kurain Village in Turnabout Goodbyes. Not my thing, but I can understand why people ship Phoenix and Maya, because I ship Phoenix and Miles for many of the same reasons.
Feel free to comment. What are your thoughts.

Alright finished the first round of Investigations of  “Farewell, my turnabout” and... woah. what a ride - not even from the case itself (the circus one was weirder) but becuase of the cast. Quick summary:
* Maya got kidnapped. I’m ready to throw hands with whoever had THAT brilliant idea (and I think so is Phoenix)
* I don’t trust the suspect one bit, even if there was no lie in his statement of “I did not kill him” (no psy locks). He was not the killer, yes. But maybe the one pulling the strings behind it. You don’t need to kidnap someone to prove someone not guilty if that one is really not guilty (and this was no desperate stupid action of a loved one of the suspect - this was calculated. So the suspect remains suspicious)
* Edgeworth is back - while I’m not surprised about that one, I’m highly amused that he proves himself to be already much healthier. He quickly blocks all of Franziska’s anger without getting angry himself, points out to a very angry Phoenix that “your hatred for me is one sided” and “different from you, I can play in a team” and indirectly offers help with the case. He’s much more relaxed than before he went missing. He’s not healed at all, but he’s doing better. I’m glad to see it.
* I’m saying he’s not completely okay because of the way he described the attempted suicide of the managerin, Adrian Andrews. While he’s describing that she’s co-dependent and “takes on the confidence of her mentor, poses as them, behaves like them”, he’s curling into himself once again. He’s thinking about himself and von Karma, I would wager. He’s describing the “dying” when the other person in that co-dependency dies from his point of view before he went missing. That’s his story he’s telling there, not only Adrian’s.
* On the other hand, Phoenix is doing worse and worse. While most of that is because of Maya being kidnapped, a lot of it is also Edgeworth returning.  He actually lashed out and told the other “you should have stayed away” and “I never wanted to see you again” (in the German version . I don’t know how faithfully they translated it).
Actually, this is a very interesting new point of Phoenix’ character - with how easily he gives in usually with people he’s loyal to, with how forgiving he is, this stubborn refusal of hearing Edgeworth out and lashing out is, on one hand, understandable (he seems to have believed Edgeworth was dead, or would never return) but also very harsh for Phoenix’ usual behavior. He’s acting like someone who was already hurt once in the past, and has bad memories on it; he’s reacting like someone who was already burnt once, and does not want to live through that again. Now I really want to know more about Phoenix’ past...
* And on a much more lighthearted note, my favorite side pieces of this were a) Gumshoe risking his very job once again to help Phoenix get Maya back and b) Phoenix constantly looking out for Pearls in tiny ways like a Dad.
Sheesh, the rollercoaster. Lemme take a break and then see if I can get Maya out of there as soon as possible!

A Second Chance: Chapter 6
An Ace Attorney fanfic. Read on both AO3 and FF.net!
Summary: Miles learns the identity of his “dead” mother, and the aftermath of that revelation is a tricky one. Especially when his newfound little sister is trying to turn him into a spirit medium.
AKA Miles is a Fey. Miles also doesn’t really know how to family properly.
[Chapter 1] | [Chapter 2] | [Chapter 3] | [Chapter 4] | [Chapter 5]
Comments make my day! :D
The Cousin
“She did what?”
Maya felt like tugging her hair out as she paced around the couch, flapping her hands about as if doing so would fix all her problems. After her super abrupt phone call with Pearl, she’d practically ran to Phoenix to relay what happened. Long story short, it hadn’t gone well.
“I don’t know, Nick! I just started telling her and then she ran off crying!”
Phoenix looked just as puzzled as she felt.
“Did you tell her gently?” He suggested, but by his accusatory tone of voice Maya was pretty sure he already knew the answer.
“I was excited, okay?!”
“Fine, fine…” Phoenix sighed, leaning back. “I get that.”
After a few seconds, Maya slumped onto the couch next to him. “No, you’re right,” she admitted, uncharacteristically quiet, “I should’ve been more sensitive.”
Phoenix opened his mouth to argue, but Maya cut him off.
“I should’ve realized it would be different for her.”
She honestly felt like she should have known, but she’d been so tied up in her own self-justified excitement that she’d failed to even think about what it would mean for Pearl, and for everyone else in general.
“Wait,” said Phoenix, interrupting her thoughts, “why would it be different for her? She’s met Edgeworth before and she was fine with him. I know he can be a bit… intimidating, but still, I wouldn’t run away screaming.”
“Yeah, you wouldn’t.” Maya couldn’t help but laugh.
Phoenix gave her an extremely pointed what’s-that-supposed-to-mean look.
“No, it’s just that…” Maya began awkwardly, before letting out a small sigh. It wasn’t a nice subject to talk about, but it had to be done. “Look, I’ve told you about how the village doesn’t have the best history with men, right?”
Phoenix nodded gravely.
“Well,” she continued, trying to find the right words, “when we were young, Aunt Morgan liked to drill it into our heads that ‘all men tied to the Fey clan are evil’. If she ever caught us talking about them we’d get told off.” She paused, lost in the memories. It made sense why her aunt would think that, now that she knew about Dahlia and Iris. “Now I never really took any of her lectures to heart, but Pearly…”
“...she would cling onto those words for life.” Phoenix finished. “Yeah, I can see that.”
“I just don’t get it though!” Maya whined. “Like you said, she knows Edgeworth, it shouldn’t be such a big deal.”
Phoenix scratched his chin in thought. “Remember, she doesn’t know him as well as we do though, she’s still intimidated by him.”
“Yeah, who wouldn’t be.” She replied instinctively, before slowly turning her head to look Phoenix directly in the eyes. He gave her That Look again.
“Why not just take him over to Kurain so they can talk it out?” He suggested, after a few uncomfortable seconds. “He can get to see her properly, and Pearls can see that he’s a pretty cool dude. Kill two birds with one stone.”
“Nah, that won’t work.” Maya replied. “Aunt Morgan’s not the only one who has a thing against men, and suddenly bringing in Edgeworth and telling everyone he’s the master’s brother probably won’t end well.”
Maya noticed Phoenix’s wince but didn’t mention it. She’d paraded into Kurain Village with him by her side many times, and it’s true that some of the women had been… less than polite toward him.
“Well you can’t just leave it at that.” He said. “Miles is gonna want to speak to her eventually, and you don’t want her screaming as soon as she sees him.” “Yeah, I know, but I just don’t know how!” Maya huffed.
“I could talk to her?” He offered.
“No way! If you do, she’ll think I sent you, and when she’s angry she will go to surprising lengths to avoid people.” Pearls had once climbed an entire mountain to avoid having a bath. It was not something to be taken lightly.
“So what you’re saying is, we have to fix this from far away. Great.” Phoenix groaned.
“Actually,” Maya jumped suddenly, her eyes lighting up, “that’s exactly what we need to do! And I have a plan of how we’re gonna do it.”
Phoenix cringed at Maya’s newfound determination. Maya’s plans tended to be quite dramatic, to say the least. They also happened to be really hard to talk her out of doing them.
“What are we going to do?” He asked unenthusiastically.
“If we want to get them to talk it out properly, we’re gonna need a secret weapon!”
“Secret weapon?” Phoenix asked, fear creeping into his voice.
Maya pushed him to one side, sprung up from the couch, darted across the room, and grabbed a notepad and pen.
“Yeah! Trust me Nick, with this, Pearly and Edgeworth will be best friends by the end of the week!”
~._-_.~
“Hey pal! Over here!”
Detective Gumshoe waved frantically from the station platform at his target who was peeking at him behind the phone booth.
“M-Mr Detective!” Called Pearl Fey as she slowly made her way toward him, tugging at her robes.
Gumshoe noted that the poor girl’s eyes were puffy and swollen, and he guessed it was probably from rubbing them too much. Poor kid. At first he’d thought that Maya had been exaggerating about her being upset, but apparently not.
It only made him more determined to complete his mission.
“Hey, sweetheart! A little birdie told me that you were feeling down, so you’re old pal Dick Gumshoe’s here to cheer you up!”
Pearl looked hesitant, and Gumshoe thought that he maybe shouldn’t have shouted so loud. He didn’t want to frighten her, after all.
“Are you the surprise Mystic Soma told me about?” She asked.
Gumshoe nodded with enthusiasm. “Uh huh! And I’ve planned a whole day of fun! Just you wait little missy, we’re gonna turn that frown upside down!” He demonstrated this using his own face and some strange noises to accompany them.
People had always told him he was good with kids, but he’d always replied by saying he was just doing his job as a friendly citizen. But as he watched Pearl’s nervous face crack open into a fit of giggles, before getting covered with her hands when she was overcome with embarrassment, he half-believed them.
After that, it wasn’t that hard to convince her to come with him, but they’d gone to double check with her guardians first. He already had permission but he needed an excuse to use up the time before the next train. He also managed to get a free cup of tea with it.
He was slightly concerned, when the train finally arrived, that Pearl was so confident in navigating it herself that she ran off inside without him. He was on a mission dammit, he couldn’t fail at the very start!
Truth is, when Maya and Phoenix first enlisted him for this task the day before, he hadn’t had much time to prepare and think things through. Luckily for him though, they already seemed to have things all planned out. He hadn’t hesitated in agreeing to it of course (especially once Maya so kindly offered that Phoenix could pay for the train tickets) but that didn’t mean he wasn’t nervous. There was a lot on the line.
All he could do was hope that it all worked out.
The train ride itself wasn’t anything special. He made sure to regularly ask Pearl a random question so she wouldn’t get bored, but toward the end they’d ended up bouncing up and down in their seats, singing the songs he’d taught her on the journey. The small handful of other passengers had sent them plenty of annoyed glares, but he was used to it and she didn’t seem to notice. They had fun and that was all that mattered. The fun didn’t stop there, though.
Once they arrived, Gumshoe let Pearl sit in the passenger seat as he drove around the city. He wasn’t sure how much she’d already seen but thought a tour couldn’t hurt.
He also didn’t have enough money to take her inside anywhere special, so a tour would have to do.
Pearl spent most of the time gazing out of the open window in awe. She was familiar with the streets around the courthouse, and the pair stopped for a moment outside to see if they could hear any heated arguments from inside. They obviously couldn’t, but it was fun nonetheless.
He purposely avoided driving past Wright & Co Law Offices because he was supposed to be providing a distraction.
Time passed surprisingly quickly, and it was a good few hours before he noticed Pearl start to fidget and wiggle around in her seat. Sighing, Gumshoe checked the time. 4:26pm. Almost time.
“Hey kid, wanna go to the park?”
Pearl looked up at him, brows furrowed in confusion. “What’s a park?”
It took every bit of effort in his bones to not slam down the break right then and there. Alas, this did mean that he couldn’t hide the look of abject horror on his face.
“You’ve never been to a park?” He asked incredulously.
“I don’t think so?” Pearl replied, shuffling in her seat. “Maybe I have, but I don’t know what it is. I’m sorry.”
“Right, that’s it.” Gumshoe grit his teeth together and thrust his foot onto the gas. “We’re going to the park this second and you’re gonna get to play there if it's the last thing I do.”
He might’ve been speeding, probably was in hindsight, but whilst caught up in his determination he didn’t notice. Anyways, it was more important to let this little girl experience a park as soon as humanly possible.
And oh, the look on Pearl’s face when they went inside the park. Her eyes shone with wonder, she jumped up to touch the leaves whenever they walked under a tree, and as soon as the play area came into view she tugged at his trenchcoat and pointed shyly.
“Can I go play there?”
“Knock yourself out!” He said instinctively, before hastily adding “I mean go play as much as you want, I’ll be over here. That’s just a way of speaking.” after Pearl’s jaw dropped in shock.
She really was a sheltered kid, huh.
He sat on the bench and watched her play for another hour. She was surprisingly agile, and she was scrambling across the jungle gyms meant for kids double her age. He almost had a heart attack when she bolted to the monkey bars and began to swing across them as good as any monkey, speeding past the other children leaving them gaping at her in amazement. Or maybe fear. He couldn’t speak for them, but he was definitely terrified of this nine-year-old.
When she eventually tired herself out, she joined him on the bench. Gumshoe thinks that in the few hours they’ve spent together, he’s just made a friend for life.
“Hey,” He leaned in close to her ear, and whispered: “wanna get some ice cream?”
“Yes please!” Pearl squealed, clapping her hands together happily; a stark contrast to the sad little girl he’d met at the station.
He bought her a vanilla cone covered top to bottom with rainbow sprinkles, and she asked him multiple times if it was actually edible and if she was the one meant to eat it.
What he didn’t tell her was that he wasn’t going to have dinner that night, but one little girl’s happiness was well worth the price of one little meal. He was starting to get sick of instant noodles anyways.
While she was busy eating (her face scrunched up whenever she licked it because of the cold, and he found it absolutely adorable) Gumshoe kept on anxiously checking his watch. The face was cracked slightly, but he could still tell the time so it was all good. It was about 5:50pm, which meant that his target would appear any time now. He wasn’t sure where exactly, but he kept his eyes peeled.
After a heated debate with Pearl about how ice cream was made, he spotted him. He was sitting with his back to them on a bench on the other side of the playing field. He looked like any other stranger wearing a black coat from that distance, but Gumshoe’s eyes were trained to seek him out at all times. And there he was, right on schedule.
“Hey Pearl, wanna piggyback?” He asked once she’d finished her treat.
“Yeah!”
“Hop on!”
He stood up and bent down in front of the bench, which Pearl used as a boost to stand on before leaping onto his back. She was light, and even Gumshoe’s own nieces weighed twice as much as she did. He grinned.
“Ready? Here we GO!”
They ploughed through the playing field, whooping, and Pearl bounced up and down with each stride. When Gumshoe noticed their target standing up to leave, he forced himself to go even faster.
“MR EDGEWORTH SIR!”
Edgeworth’s head snapped in their direction and he dropped his briefcase in surprise. The man was positively shocked to see them, and Gumshoe felt a twinge of guilt for maybe/probably ruining his ‘much needed alone time’.
“D-Detective?!”
“Um, Mr Gummy?” Pearl tugged at the collar of his coat. “Where are we going?”
She’d stopped cheering and now her voice sounded frightened. Gumshoe felt lucky that he couldn’t see her face right then, or he might’ve ended up abandoning the mission altogether.
“Just gonna go talk to a friend.” He replied, as cheerfully as he could. “He’s super cool, he’s the best guy I know!”
He felt the back of his collar get tugged again. “I d-don’t want to…”
Seeing as they were almost there, Gumshoe gradually slowed his pace to get his breath back.
“Don’t worry,” he huffed, “it’ll only be for a minute.”
“Detective, what are you doing here?” Edgeworth asked once they were close enough to not shout to be heard. Then his eyes settled on the young girl trying to hide behind Gumshoe’s scruffy mass of hair.
“Pearls!” He said, eyes wide. Then, to Gumshoe in a stage whisper that sounded a lot more like a hiss of a snake: “Does she know?”
Gumshoe nodded happily. “‘Course she does! You know who Mr Edgeworth is, don’t you Pearly?” He felt her climb higher onto his back and guessed she was nodding.
Edgeworth’s eyes were unblinking and his lips were parted slightly as he stared at the girl on his back. Gumshoe had done his job, now he just had to wait and see if the mission was successful.
“Hello Pearls,” Edgeworth said hesitantly, extending every syllable. “How er-, how are you?”
Without warning, Gumshoe felt Pearl slide off his back in an instant and didn’t have time to process what was happening before she was charging toward Edgeworth, fist raised. She struck him in the stomach causing him to double over in pain.
“You abandoned Mystic Maya!” She shrieked, throwing another punch onto the already-winded Edgeworth.
“Watch out sir!” Gumshoe cried ten seconds too late.
“You left Mystic Maya all alone and she cried about her family and you didn’t help her!” Pearl shouted, still throwing punches. “And she trusted you!”
“I-I didn’t know- OOF” Edgeworth wheezed, before letting out a groan as his thigh was slapped particularly hard. Gumshoe desperately wanted to pull her off him, but wasn’t facing problems the best way to solve them? So he held back until she aimed for a nasty spot to punch, because then he hastily grabbed her and pulled her back.
Pearl was crying now. “You sh-should have been there for her!” She wailed.
“I’m sorry,” said Edgeworth while he regained his breath, “I am really sorry Pearl, but I honestly didn’t know. If I’d known then-”
He cut himself off and looked down in… shame? Gumshoe watched him in concern. He didn’t seem interested in finishing his point though and instead crouched down to her level.
“I didn’t know.” He repeated, gracefully pressing a hand against his heart. “But I promise that I’ll try to make it up to her. Will you allow me to do that?”
Pearl sniffed and rubbed her eyes. “Y-You really didn’t know?”
Edgeworth nodded slowly.
She brushed her tears away, all cried out, and grabbed onto Gumshoe’s coat. “Did your dad know?”
At first, Edgeworth huffed in disbelief, before his face softened. “Yes, I think he did. But he loved Maya, Mia and their mother very much and didn’t have a choice to leave them. He passed away when they were young, and didn’t get the chance to tell me.”
As far as Gumshoe knew, Edgeworth had no way of knowing any of what he’d just said. It also then occurred to him that he was a very good liar. Had he been lied to before without realizing it?
They stood there in tense silence for a few moments, waiting for Pearl to react.
“You’re not lying?” She asked quietly. “No.”
Lie or not, it seemed to work, and all of a sudden she let go of her grip on his coat and darted towards Edgeworth, wrapping him tightly in a cuddle that looked like it was squeezing the life out of him.
“I-I’m sorry!” She wailed again from within his chest. “I thought you left on purpose! Mom said everyone leaves to hurt us and I thought you did as well and I’m sorry-”
As she rambled into his torso, Edgeworth was as stiff as a statue. His hands were frozen a few inches away from Pearl’s back. They were shaking, as if unsure whether to touch her or not. His eyes were pointed at Gumshoe, desperately begging for help, pleading for him to intervene and just say something, anything, but he didn’t. So he was just left to squat there awkwardly as a little girl cried into him.
Gumshoe watched on from the side, feeling a wave of pride wash over him.
“Um, Pearl?” Said Edgeworth, once Pearl had finished her long apology. “Would you like to go and see Maya?”
Pearl shuffled away and turned to Gumshoe, who nodded gleefully. She looked back at Edgeworth and nodded.
“Right then.” He said, standing up and brushing himself off. “We’ll go to Wright’s office.”
“Mr Eh-ji-worth?”
“Yes, Pearls?”
“Please can I go with Mr Gummy in his car?”
Gumshoe smiled. Mission accomplished.

oooo i'm sorry but one more scene for commentary if youre up to it: maya and phoenix talking in chapter 6?
Of course, no need to apologize!! Once more, keeping this under a “keep reading”:
Around noon, his apartment intercom buzzed. “Nick, it’s Maya! Let me up.”
Maya? What was she even doing here? Maya never visited him out of the blue anymore… Whatever. She’d probably think he was at his office. She’d go away soon.
There was another buzz. “Nick! I know you’re in there! I called your office, you know!”
Kids these days. Selling out their bosses that easily… Maybe he should cut Athena’s salary. Nah, he wasn’t Edgeworth. … Edgeworth.
“don’t think about Edgeworth don’t think about Edgeworth -- ah damn it”
“Nick! Hello! Nick!”
She had to give up eventually, right? Whatever she was here for, someone else could help her…
“Security’s coming after me, if they arrest me you’re gonna have to defend me, you know, do you want that? I’m not even gonna try to pay you for it since it’s gonna be your fault —”
Ugh.
Phoenix stumbled out of bed and buzzed her in. “Fine. Come up.”
“Thank you!” she chirped in a sing-songy voice. “Hey, you heard him, let me go…”
Maya’s Obnoxious Little Sister Energy is eternal. Her next strategy was to break from the guards and dash as far as she could go trying to break her way into Phoenix’s apartment which... wouldn’t have ended well haha.
Also! Like I mentioned in the previous ask, a lot of this fic was just Phoenix’s Relationship Issues, and the way I characterized him in this fic was a lot of... he needs to have people around or he kind of falls apart, and his history of having people around was that these people needed him in some way -- Maya after she was accused of murder and then hanging around for Mia’s sake, Trucy being abandoned and needing looking after, even Miles to an extent needing to be saved from his corrupt ways and the von Karma influence -- and now that they’re all growing up and don’t need him anymore he thinks they’re going to abandon him.
That’s a long-winded way of referring to that one sentence of “Whatever she was here for, someone else could help her”
Also... I don’t live in an apartment and haven’t visited many apartments? So I’m not totally sure how the whole buzzing someone in process works. no one’s called me out on it though so I guess I’m okay.
Phoenix sighed and wondered if he should make himself look presentable. There probably wasn’t enough time. Maya wouldn’t notice that he hadn’t changed his clothes for two days, right?
She probably would. But he couldn’t do anything about it, as just then there was a knock on the door. Figuring he should appease her so she wouldn’t give security anymore trouble, he reluctantly let her in.
Indeed, there was Maya, looking cheery as ever. “Hey, dude. What’s going on with you?”
“Nothing,” said Phoenix, and in response to Maya’s raised eyebrow as she took in his appearance, “Just not feeling well. Why’re you here, Maya? I thought you were busy up at the village.”
passive-aggressive “oh aren’t you supposed to be busy?” from Phoenix here...
One of the other major changes I made to this fic in the editing process was cutting out a LOT of Maya content. I really love her and wanted her to be here more, but to properly go through the Phoenix Characterization Study I had to make it seem like she wasn’t around as much so that Phoenix would feel more lonely. again, sorry, Phoenix... but like originally she came down for the picnic in chapter 3 and was around at the beginning of chapter 4, so it would be SO WEIRD if she showed up in every single chapter except for chapter 5 and then Phoenix accuses her here of being too busy to hang out with him. She was there all the time! So I only had her show up for the wedding and added in a few more lines alluding to her not being here as much as she used to in trilogy days.
“I am,” she admitted, pushing her way into his apartment. “But your daughter called me yesterday morning and said that if you didn’t call, I should check in on you. So. Here I am. And I know you’re not just sick.”
Kids these days indeed! Like Phoenix didn’t feel bad enough, his own daughter had to go and parent him. “Look, Maya, everything’s fine. I’m sorry Trucy made you think something was wrong.”
One writing tip I got and I’ve been working on implementing is like... trying to have a general idea of what every character is up to when they’re not “on screen”, so to speak. Even then, what they’re thinking about when they’re not the POV focus. So basically after the call with Trucy just prior to this scene, she immediately decided to call Maya (because she could tell something was Off with her dad and Miles, given his reaction when she mentioned his name,) and then told her to check up on him because he really scared her during that phone call... though she wouldn’t admit it. She basically saw it as a hint of returning to a sort of... disbarment-era depression, which she didn’t want, so she wanted to make sure someone could check in on him as soon as he could since she couldn’t.
Also another small aspect of Phoenix characterization (that’s going to be like 99% of my commentary about this fic I’m sorry) is that the way he deals best with depression is like... being around people, and doing things with people. It’s obviously not a method that works for everyone, but it keeps him from dwelling on things and kind of gives him a purpose, helps him feel like he’s needed. Mostly got this headcanon from RFTA where he says he was unable to take on any cases when Maya was gone until Ema showed up... and then even at the beginning of 2-2 he does seem pretty down. Trucy kind of knows some of this since she was the main thing keeping him together during disbarment era, at least enough to know that when Phoenix is depressed he’ll do much better if he’s got someone he cares about around.
Anyways, Trucy probably told Maya just to call in, because she knows her aunt is busy and part of the reason Maya hasn’t been around much is because she’s stuck with all sorts of Master responsibilities at Kurain, but Maya herself wanted to come down and check on Phoenix in person because she knows how he can get and if it was enough to worry Trucy, then she was pretty worried too.
Maya planted her hands on her hips. “No way, mister. I did not take a two hour train ride down here for you to tell me everything’s fine. Do you know how difficult it was to get permission to leave?! I had to pull the old ‘I need to visit my boyfriend’ card for them to let me go!”
Phoenix groaned, despite himself. “Have they still not caught on about that?”
“Their desperation for an heir has blinded them to common sense. They made me drink some disgusting fertility tea before I left, so you really owe me one.” She lowered her hands and sighed. “Look, Nick, I know something’s up. So talk to me. Please.”
I took a few liberties to sprinkle in my Kurain headcanons in here... which I’ve rambled about more in depth elsewhere, so I won’t go into too much detail, but basically: hereditary spiritual power leads to a lot of pressure on people who have said hereditary spiritual power to reproduce so they can pass it on to the next generation. Particularly with Maya (and Pearls to some extent though I believe Maya would willingly take the heat on it) since the two of them are the only remaining spirit channelers of the Kurain technique. And since it took Maya a really long time to become the Master officially (I don’t buy the idea that she wasn’t skilled enough by the end of T&T, my headcanon is the Master training process involves two years in Khura’in but she put that off until Phoenix was in the clear regarding Kristoph stuff) they probably don’t want her leaving the village to “goof off” unless she’s doing it to produce an heir. her biological clock is ticking! haha! (... ugh.)
And this kind of leads to -- in the elaborate backstory of this fic that I can only touch on through DVD commentaries which is like half the reason I do these things -- Maya and Phoenix agreeing that if Maya needs to get out of the village but whoever the other people in the village are start putting pressure on her, she can say she’s “visiting her boyfriend” who they think is Phoenix but really isn’t... and I guess they assume they’re getting up to heir-making activities but oh darn! didn’t work this time! guess I’ll have to go again next week! (obviously they’re just out getting burgers or something.)
Hence people in the village pushing fertility tea on her because they think the problem is that she’s not getting pregnant... although they’re kind of misunderstanding the reason why she’s not getting pregnant... because no amount of fertility tea in the world will lead to a spontaneous pregnancy without other activities first. which aren’t happening. I feel like I need to clarify this multiple times just in case someone misunderstands.
Pearls both knows about this agreement and knows that Phoenix and Maya aren’t actually dating because she’s like nineteen now? She’s probably known for years, she never brings it up during DD and SOJ.
“I won’t go into much detail” oops. I’m so sorry.
Phoenix didn’t say anything.
Maya took him by the arm and guided him to the couch, plopping him down none-too-gently before sitting next to him. “You can trust me, right?” she asked. “You’re my best friend. I’m here for you, even if you did something really stupid.”
Phoenix laughed a bit. “Yeah… I did something really stupid.”
“Okay. Tell me.”
Phoenix buried his face in his hands with a sigh, then rolled his head to peek through his fingers at Maya. She looked — angry, sure, he wasn’t exactly being the most cooperative of people right now, but — open. Prepared. Like she was actually going to listen.
I know that SOJ called Miles Phoenix’s best friend, which don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved, but I do wish Maya was ALSO considered Phoenix’s best friend if not one of his closest friends, because they’re so obviously best friends. They’re a different flavour of best friends than Phoenix and Miles, because Phoenix and Miles are the “it’s complicated and there are secret romantic feelings possibly but we trust each other unconditionally” best friends, Phoenix and Maya have a twenty-five step secret handshake they have to execute every time upon meeting.
But of course that doesn’t mean they can’t be serious, Maya is absolutely here for her dumb best friend
“It’s…” He sighed, again. “Have you ever — have you ever wanted something for a really long time, but — but you never thought you’d get it, and then you have this chance, and you just… panic?”
Maya nodded solemnly. “Steel Samurai movie premiere tickets. I won a raffle, but I forgot I signed up for them and thought it was a hoax, and didn’t get to accept them before the deadline. The bad Wi-Fi didn’t help, either.”
“But that doesn’t mean they can’t be serious” um
The one constant among all the ace attorney main characters is that NONE OF THEM WANT TO TALK ABOUT THEIR FEELINGS EVER
Also I struggled a lot with this fic trying to figure out... exactly what was going on in Phoenix’s head, and how he would interpret what was going on in his head. I kept changing opinions all the time and it was so off before I did editing haha. Even this line is still a little weird with the “Have you ever wanted something for a really long time” because he probably shouldn’t be aware that he has wanted this for a long time. ... I’m going to stop pointing out the flaws in my own fic now--
At Phoenix’s glare, she added, “I’m just kidding. Thought I’d lighten the mood a bit. Is this about Edgeworth?”
“What makes you think that?”
“‘Cause when is it not about Edgeworth with you,” asked Maya, cutting straight to the heart of things, as always. “Did he ask you out?”
“Not even that.” Phoenix turned his gaze to the floor, ashamed. “He said he loved me. I… I told him I didn’t feel the same.”
Maya was silent for a moment. Phoenix didn’t dare look at her. “Do you?”
“I like being around him,” said Phoenix. “I like seeing him smile, and laugh, and — and he makes me happy.”
What he wouldn’t give to see Edgeworth smile and laugh at him again.
“Not what I asked, dude.”
“Nick’s being really broody again it’s GOTTA be Edgeworth...”
Anyways that second-to-last line there is sticking out at me and I’m pretty sure it’s one I wavered back and forth on deleting before deciding to keep. ... at least I think I kept it? I’m taking these from google docs so there might be a few tiny changes from the ao3 version but I don’t think there’s anything too major I changed while doing last-minute edits.
Again we run into the problem of Phoenix Is Incapable Of Admitting He’s In Love With Miles -- which is the whole psyche-locks thing that pops up in the scene after this. The psyche-locks were also a pretty last-minute addition plot-wise... I think this fic was the most I deviated from my outline, but I was pretty rushed for time so I didn’t do as much planning as I normally would.
Hm I think there’s another ask where I can talk more about the psyche-locks? I’ll talk a bit here because I put a lot of thought into it. Basically I ran with the idea of black psyche-locks hiding something even the owner isn’t aware of, and that those psyche-locks are (typically? who knows about Kristoph) inflicted through traumatic events. Phoenix has three because I came up with three main Issues he had to work through, but some of them kind of blend together... two of them came up through specific traumatic events (Phoenix guesses them in chapter 8) and another one is just general overall trauma. if no one brings up the particular scenes by the time I get to that other ask, I’ll talk more about them, but basically there are three locks from three separate traumas and three occasions where they break -- someone guessed one of the breaking scenes on the narumitsu discord, but no one’s brought up the other two yet!
Long-winded way of saying that the psyche-locks are the reason that Phoenix can’t admit that he’s in love with Miles yet... and it’s kind of a cheap fantasy visualization of the trauma, basically? Maybe not the most elegant way of addressing it, but I never claimed to be writing for a series which addresses issues elegantly.
“But — but can you even imagine it?” Phoenix demanded, raising his head to gesture fully at the ridiculousness of it all. “Me and Edgeworth?”
“Yeah,” said Maya, simply. “It’s not that hard, really.”
Phoenix had no response.
“You two balance each other out well, and you trust each other, and you both care a ton about each other,” Maya elaborated. “If you love him, what’s the problem?”
oh Phoenix you have no idea. you and Miles are so easy to imagine together that you’re the number one pairing on ace attorney ao3 by a longshot.
Also one thing I kind of wanted to avoid was less of the... “you and Miles are PERFECT for each other how do you not SEE this” thing. nothing against the trope, of course! Just the whole concept of people shipping their friends intensely is something I’m not super familiar with and tbh would make me pretty uncomfortable...? It’s sort of the deal with rpf. Of course this is fanfiction with fictional characters but from an in-universe perspective...
So Maya’s taking the approach of more “Yeah, I can see you and Edgeworth as a couple, I think you’d work well together” rather than “you two are SO perfect together and I’ve been shipping you since 2016!!” because while that may be what Maya is THINKING it’s definitely not what Phoenix needs to hear right now.
“It just… seems like a recipe for disaster. I wouldn’t even know how to… like, this isn’t my first time feeling like this, but when I think about us, me and Edgeworth, it’s…” Why couldn’t he find the right words? “It’s too much.”
Maya brought a hand to her chin and tilted her head thoughtfully. “So — tell me if I’ve got this right — you like Edgeworth too, but for some reason, when he confessed to you, you panicked and you don’t know why.”
“I guess…” Phoenix returned his face to the comforting darkness of his hands. “I don’t know what it is. I-I shouldn’t have a problem, right? But the thought of a-actually admitting that I… or being in a relationship, it feels like I’m standing at the edge of a cliff and am about to fall off.”
Maya was silent for a long time. Phoenix just hoped that whatever she said next, it would somehow magically fix all his problems.
Instead, she said the most ridiculous thing Phoenix could possibly imagine. “Maybe you have trust issues?”
It certainly lightened the mood. Phoenix threw his head back and laughed harder than he had in a long time.
Phoenix is a very trusting person, absolutely, but you can’t tell me this man walked out of the Dahlia Debacle without quite a few romance-related issues. It’s kind of a weird sort of contradiction...
“No, I’m serious,” she persisted, through his laughter.
“What are you talking about, Maya?” Phoenix managed to get out, once he had that fit of mirth under control. “There’s no way I have trust issues. My whole thing is trusting people and believing in people until the end, you know?”
“Yeah, I know. But trusting someone not to be a murderer is a bit different, isn’t it?”
“It’s not like that’s as far as it goes,” Phoenix argued. “I trust you, I trust all of our friends, more than just not being murderers.”
“Yeah, sure, but romance is kind of on a different level.” She leaned back into the couch thoughtfully. “When’s the last time you’ve been with anyone?”
“... At least not since I got Trucy,” Phoenix admitted, only a little shamefully. “You try hooking up with people while having the world’s most perceptive daughter who’s desperate for a ‘new mommy’.”
“Been with anyone seriously, I mean.”
Phoenix winced. “... College.”
“I rest my case, Your Honor.”
Prettty self-explanatory here, I managed to get most of my thoughts on the actual fic instead of wanting to put it in an appendix or something. Basically... you can trust people in different ways? Phoenix can trust someone to not be a murderer to the extent of putting his own life on the line for them... but when it comes to revealing any sort of details about himself, or general emotional intimacy, he’s kind of stingy about it. Of course the out-of-universe explanation is “Phoenix doesn’t talk about this stuff because we need suspense so the player keeps playing the game instead of an exposition dump as soon as the issue comes up” but I like finding in-universe explanations for out-of-universe stuff.
I think I just regurgitated my points in a few excerpts oops.
Last little comment there regarding the idea of Phoenix presumably having a casual sex life -- Iiiiii am super asexual, have known that for a long time, generally kind of squeamish about the concept and also live a very sheltered life. so I don’t know much about people hooking up... like how people just go out and do these things. But I know people do these things so I try to reference it within my limited knowledge. Anyways yeah presumably that was happening in the background throughout the trilogy in the universe of this fic. probably not an important point. i’m moving on now.
“I’m not hung up on that!” Phoenix insisted. “Iris was a good person, she was the person I trusted. I’ve known that for years, now!”
“But she did lie to you,” Maya pointed out. “And you thought she tried to kill you for five years. I dunno, if it were me, I’d have a hell of a lot of relationship issues now.”
“Do you want me to psychoanalyze you too, now, Maya? It’s not gonna be pretty.”
“Oh, no thanks, that’s what therapy’s for,” she said, far too cheerily. “But really, Nick.”
Anyways I’m pretty invested in the whole Iris-Phoenix dynamic post-Bridge to the Turnabout, because like on the one hand, hypothetically the woman you were in love with but you thought was a killer coming out to say that she actually didn’t kill anyone and was actually in love with you should resolve all your lingering relationship issues resulting from that... but I don’t see that actually happening.
It probably took Phoenix the whole five years to come to terms with the fact that Dahlia hated his guts and tried to kill him, because I do believe he was seriously hardcore in love with her at the time. Well, Iris, but he didn’t know the difference. And then finding out Iris actually loved him... but not enough to actually, say, tell him this beforehand?... makes things kind of messy. Phoenix probably thinks he should be all better now but really the whole Dahlia-Iris thing was messed up and undoubtedly messed him up a lot.
Last little bit is just me squeezing in that Maya probably also has a lot of messed up relationship issues and also definitely needs therapy. (And is getting a bit of therapy in this fic! Good for her!) I have a lot of thoughts about Maya’s trauma... but unfortunately this fic is about Phoenix so I couldn’t go too in depth about that. Sorry, Maya. One day.
Phoenix sank further into the couch. “I don’t have trust issues.”
“Y’know, there’s still a lot of stuff I don’t know about you,” said Maya. “You never tell me anything personal until there’s a murder or something and then you have to. What happened to Edgeworth, both times. The whole Dahlia thing. It took me ages to get you to tell me how you got disbarred, even! And, like, romance has this level of intimacy to it, where he’d need to know stuff about you that I wouldn’t know, that Trucy wouldn’t know. And Nick, you know I love you, but I know you’re scared of that.”
“What do you know about it?” Phoenix snapped. “You’re barely ever here.”
He felt horrible as soon as the words left his mouth. Maya gave a sharp inhale and stiffened, her eyebrows knitting above an angry and hurt glare.
“I’m sorry,” Phoenix apologized, looking at the floor. “That was… that was unfair.”
“Yeah,” said Maya. “Yeah, it was.”
yep regurgitating my points from above. Anyways, highlights: platonic “I love you”s are great, we should have more of those. Just... emphasizing that it’s platonic because the Phoenix and Maya friendship is one of my favourite things in the series.
And there’s that “You’re barely ever here” comment that I had to cut Maya out of most of this fic to fit in, because otherwise it wouldn’t make any sense. In the universe of this fic Maya was pretty distant being busy with training and spirit medium Master stuff after the trilogy... and presumably hasn’t seen Phoenix as much as either of them would like. She loves hanging out with her best friend, and probably feels super guilty too, that Phoenix is dealing with all these issues and she can’t be there because she has other responsibilities -- so obviously it upsets her when Phoenix kind of accuses her of not being there for him, because she definitely would be, if she could, and if Phoenix would let her.
Pretty much you can’t always be around for everyone all the time, Maya would be so worn out if she had to juggle coming down to the city to hang out with Phoenix all the time on top of all her other responsibilities. She knows this, Phoenix knows this too, he’s just kind of lashing out right now because he’s hurt and confused and misses all his important people, but Maya just happens to be in front of him right now.
And yeah what Phoenix said was pretty uncalled for, which he realizes right away, and Maya acknowledges -- a pretty short fight, I don’t think these two would stay mad at each other for too long.
They sat in a tense silence for some time, until Maya sighed and brushed back her hair.
“Look, I’m saying these things because I’m scared of it, too,” she said, barely above a whisper. “After Mia, and Mom… I don’t want to be left behind again.”
“Maya…”
“Just think about it, okay?” She extended a pinky towards him. “Promise.”
Reluctantly, Phoenix linked his pinky with hers. “Fine. I’ll think about it.”
points at this and says Maya’s Definitely Got Trauma From Trilogy Events then brushes it off to get off the uncomfortable emotion topics
“Good.” Maya hopped up from the couch and stretched her arms above her head. “I’ll forget about what you said if you buy me lunch, okay? I’ve got a client this evening, so I can’t stay long, but I’ve got enough time to stop by Eldoon’s.”
“If you insist,” said Phoenix with an exaggerated sigh, and Maya laughed, so Phoenix willed himself to push the conversation from his mind for now. Maya would be spending four hours on a train today for his sake; Eldoon’s really was the least he could provide.
and in true Phoenix and Maya fashion we’re just gonna forget about the emotions and go get ramen!
Anyways thanks anon for requesting this scene I apparently have so many thoughts about Phoenix and Maya friendship... sorry if this is totally incoherent I should not have started this so late it’s like 11:30! But thank you! I will do more of these tomorrow... hopefully.

(this is a fae au q so feel free to wait to answer it until you're back in a fae au mindset) so I was rereading the themis stuff in witches because I never read it as a block and I was wondering. at this point, has the scene with maya and kristoph in the extras occurred, or has that been retconned/happens in the future? it's another interesting layer to the klavier + phoenix stuff if phoenix knows what kristoph's black locks meant (and also I'm invested in nick + maya making up)
Maya’s side story - I nearly said “paralogue”, god help me - is still canon, and while I don’t have a firm place in the timeline for it, it does assuredly happen before Maya and Phoenix’s reconciliation. There’s this one exchange in Ch 24 that I was thinking hearkens back to that scene between Maya and Kristoph:
“Besides,” he adds, furious but not at her, and rather furious that she’s tricked him into anger, “you can’t blame me for not trusting that you would leave Kristoph alone! You tried to talk me out of looking for the reason why he did what he did! You can’t blame me for thinking that the reason you wanted me to give up was so I would be fine with you killing him!”
“So what was his reason?” she demands. Her teeth have lengthened to points, her second small set of red eyes opening up at the outer corner of her main ones. “How about those locks, Nick, did you break them, did you find out why!”
He doesn’t even know why the locks were black. “I cleared my name,” he says. “I’m a lawyer again.”
The subtext I meant Maya’s lines to have there was, “did you break them, did you find out why, because I did and you didn’t.”
However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Maya has told Phoenix what the black locks meant. She didn’t in that conversation, though she does know - it’s a spite thing there, that she’s still angry with him, so she doesn’t tell him then. And then it’s - the longer you don’t tell someone something that you know, the harder it is to finally tell them because then the other question is “why didn’t you tell me sooner” and honestly that’s a theme that’s gonna be running through the rest of this series and how’s it feel to be the person on the other side of that, huh Phoenix.
But as we know, Phoenix is later going to end up asking Pearl what black locks mean, and that’s definitely a chance for Maya to finally explain what she knows about Kristoph’s.
(And thank you and everyone else for being patient with me as I try to kick my brain into multitasking. With July coming up, though time means nothing, I figured I should try and get my brain in working order and maybe split time between fae stuff and Three Houses stuff for July Camp NaNoWriMo.)

THIS GAME IS BROKEN
So it’s the beginning of the second day of the Engarde trial and I’m pretty sure Phoenix hasn’t gotten more than a few hours of sleep in two days. His best friend is kidnapped and he’s being blackmailed as a ransom; his longtime crush and future husband just came back from the dead/”finding himself” and is acting like it isn’t a big deal; he believes people are basically good but this trial is chock-full of people who are various flavors of nasty; he’s even responsible for Gumshoe all of a sudden; he’s taking care of a small child who is herself traumatized and he doesn’t have any helpers, not even to babysit her while she sleeps; and he is in a personal crisis about whether he should try to get his client declared not guilty even though he’s guilty as heck and whether that means his passion to be a lawyer [and see Miles but honestly that’s secondary] is invalid. He hasn’t dealt at all with his feelings about Miles returning because his brain is full with Maya. He’s just still angry about that and he can’t move on to deal with it because too much is going on right now. He’s falling apart. His world is falling apart but he can’t deal with that because Maya and Pearl and Miles all need him right now. And he has to go in to this trial and act like he’s okay, even though every person he met yesterday asked him why he looked sick and he is sick, sick at heart, sick with worry. --THIS IS NOT OKAY. PAUSE THE GAME.--
[game paused]
I am entering the lobby. I’m his parent. I see his face. I take him by the shoulders and grip tightly.
“It’s going to be okay,” I say, and pull him in for a hug. I rest my head on his shoulder and his goes on mine. I hold tightly.
“You can do this,” I tell him, still holding him. “This is what you do, and you are doing it as well as anyone possibly could under the circumstances. All the things you’re putting off thinking about can safely wait. It’s okay. The police are helping Maya, and you are helping Pearl and Miles just by being here. You can *do* this, baby. I love you and I believe in you.”
--Okay, NOW I can resume the game.--
P.S. I actually did that with my son who was watching. He tolerated it well. “Okay, Mom, now go back to the game,” he said. Okay. Time to save Maya and then... then we will deal with Miles.

My friend of mine made me spend 30$ on a lawyer game so I made her pay back by making her listen to my live reaction to it. I did a bunch of doodles
Before 2.4. Mostly done with 2.3 but none of them are related to the case.
Tumblr media
haha I really liked Edgeworth. I was upset when he left
Tumblr media
I did all of these without references okay
but this is a follow up to the first one.
Tumblr media
I remembered the Edgy in the wild joke randomly and drew it
Tumblr media
I THOUGHT HE WOULD BE SO UPSET WITH ME I really did. There are a few more of these I think.
Tumblr media
this tiny thing
Tumblr media
I was very mad with Mia even with Bardic’s explanation.
Tumblr media
I keep drawing Maya goofy
Tumblr media
forgot what this is here for. I think it has to do with the boob problem.
Tumblr media
That is Lulu. Praise her.
Tumblr media
time for stuff relevant to the case but nothing to do with the characters. I thought she hated me for this reason but didn’t everybody
Tumblr media
POOR PHOENIX I knew Edgy wasn’t gone though because he’s on the cover of the game and hasn’t really shown up yet also the bonus case at the end of the first game
Tumblr media
I was actually talking about 1-5 in this one but it seems to work for a lot of cases.
Tumblr media
PHOENIX SEEMED SO SAD I kept on trying to reassure him that it wasn’t his fault even if edgy did kill himself it was FRANZ’ DAD WHO SHE SHOULD STILL HATE
Tumblr media
I threatened to call the cops on her but I was never able to. I was really upset with her.
ONTO 2-4
Tumblr media
I had previous knowledge that Matt was evil and nothing else that spoiler-y. I hated him for all most of the case.
Tumblr media
Ladyverse Juan and Sha appear a few times in these 2-4 doodles.
Tumblr media
Phoenix having a really tough time. Edgy’s “suicide” being cause by him but he has to not acknowledge it and get to his job, raising Pearl, getting Maya KIDNAPPED, worrying about Matt, Edgy coming back and Phoenix is under enough stress and has to be angry at something (I MADE A NOTE ABOUT HOW IT SEEMS LIKE EDGY KNOWS PHOENIX IS UNDER A LOT OF STRESS AND HE’S BEING NICER TO HIM BECAUSE OF THAT) and Von Karma (just her whip tho), and the assassin and... I really wanted to give him some cookies to make him feel better.
Me going through Zarla’s very old 2-4 doodles: It seems we have very different opinions on Edgeworth in this case
Tumblr media
silly Sha you can’t face palm without fingertips
Sha from a distance: DISTAL PHALANGES
goodbye Juan scarf wonder who he’ll give it to
Tumblr media
sofar I sadly didn’t have a reason to hate him in game yet and it went on for a very long time so at one point I let him go for a bit to focus on other things in the game.
Tumblr media
I really didn’t wanna give him that rope though. the next doodle is me continuing this one!
Tumblr media
DAMMIT A ZOMBIE
Tumblr media
I stopped playing the game a bit to doodle my regrets away
Tumblr media
I MISSED OLD MATT now I don’t
Tumblr media
I tried to warn them
alright now that me regret doodles are done
Tumblr media
I felt really bad for Juan... His life was going terribly and he just wanted to get back at an evil man but because he didn’t think it through well enough even if he wasn’t killed he still probably wouldn’t failed...I just feel really bad for him...
Tumblr media
Now we’re at the “FUCK OFF MATT” state where I just hate him. haha.
because it was really late I didn’t doodle much else... I have my live reaction to the court thing somewhere and I still need to get it.
After cort and after the credits I did one more doodle
Tumblr media
EVERYBODY IN THIS CASE IS SO MISERABLE. Phoenix (reasons stated already), Maya (kidnapped, kept in dark closet, starved), Peal (THIS CASE IS SO DEPRESSING NO WONDER PHOENIX TAKES HER TO SO MANY FUN PLACES), Juan (stated), Adrian (she’s suicidal), and now Franz... When she was shot I was actually shocked at how upset I was. I mean, when the trial started and Edgy was there instead I felt this huge weight LIFTED from there being no whip but I was still upset! We find her and talk to her more and by the end she actually ends up CRYING in front of Miles AND PHOENIX! D:
I’m still adding on doodles because im still playing the 3rd and 4th game. yaaaay

Maya gets pissed with Phoenix. Like REALLY pissed. So much that they get into their nastiest argument yet. Nasty as in teeth-clenching, eyes-watering, un-restricted shouting that can be heard by the whole street. And poor Pearl is there to witness it all.
Phoenix: Maya… what happened to my bike?
Maya: …Sorry. It got wrecked.
Phoenix: I can see that! It’s bent at an angle and the back wheel is dented in! What did you do!?
Maya: It’s not my fault! It was that dumb driver who wasn’t looking where he was going!
[Pearl had been helping with cleaning around in the kitchen when she suddenly hears those two break out into an argument.]
Phoenix: I talked with that “dumb driver” earlier and he said you left the bike at the curb!
Maya: So? Bikes can sit anywhere! That’s why they’re convenient!
Phoenix: Normally you leave bikes on a rack or at least aside on the sidewalk, not out in the street!
Maya: I know! But it’s still that driver’s fault for not watching where he’s parking! You never know when there’ll be bikers on the street after all!
Phoenix: Yes, he’s in the wrong for that, so he’ll be paying for my insurance. But you were still too careless to leave it at risk in the first place!
[By now, Pearl is crestfallen and unsure of what to do. She’s finished up in there, but hesitates to walk out to meet them while they’re like this.]
Maya: How was I supposed to know a car would come zipping by and park on the street!? There was a parking lot in front of the store!
Phoenix: I don’t want to hear excuses. You’ll learn this lesson by buying me a new bike.
Maya: Hey! You said you had it insured! So you should already have the money to buy another! Besides, it’s just a bike.
Phoenix: It was NOT just a bike! I had that thing since I was in junior high! It had sentimental value!
Maya: …I mean since it’s a bike, it’s not that expensive to buy a new one.
Phoenix: Oh, alright. Then I guess it won’t be a problem for you to buy it for me.
Maya: Ugh! I said I was sorry! It was an honest mistake and I won’t do it again! Why are you forcing me to buy it!?
Phoenix: Hmph. If you’re not gonna buy it, then pay me up front now. Full standard price.
Maya: What? I don’t have that much on me right now!
Phoenix: Well, you’re gonna make it up to me one way or another, and I’m not paying anything for you until you do!
Maya: That’s unfair! I didn’t even mean it! Why are you being so mean with me?
Phoenix: Because I’m sick and tired of letting you off the hook for each and every “honest mistake” you have! And now it’s even cost me my means of transportation!
Maya: Hmph… this wouldn’t be an issue if you had a driver’s license.
Phoenix: Maya, don’t you dare go there…
Maya: Well, it’s true.
Phoenix: You little…
[Though the tensions have yet to fall, in this brief moment of silence, they hear a soft sound of what seems to be sniffling… and then they see little Pearl meekly step out.]
Pearl: Um…
Phoenix: Oh, Pearls…
Maya: Pearly… sorry, were we being too loud?
Pearl: No, it’s okay… I’ve finished cleaning around the kitchen, Mr. Nick.
Phoenix: Ah, right. Thanks. Uh… sorry to make you hear that.
Maya: Yeah. Don’t mind us.
Pearl: Um… I-I can help pay for the bike if you’d like.
Phoenix: Huh? Oh! No, no. Don’t worry about it.
Maya: It was my fault, Pearly. I’ll pay for it later. You don’t have to force yourself.
Pearl: Oh… okay.
Maya: And don’t worry. It’s just a really little fight this time. We’ll get over it.
Pearl: …Really?
Maya: Really.
Pearl: *tearing up* So… Mr. Nick really isn’t sick and tired of you yet, right, Mystic Maya…?
Maya: Huh? Oh…
Phoenix: Aw, no… No, it’s not like that, Pearls.
[They go over to her and give the little girl a deserving hug.]
Maya: It’s okay, Pearly, don’t cry! Sometimes, people who are close can get into nasty fights, but they’ll still work things out.
Phoenix: I know it sounded bad, but I didn’t really mean it. I just… got a bit angry.
Pearl: …
Maya: Yeah, Nick. You need to work on your anger management.
Phoenix: *annoyed* Yeah…
Maya: …And uh, I need to work on my thoughtlessness sometimes.
Phoenix: Yeah, that too.
Pearl: …But…
Phoenix: Hm?
Pearl: What will you do now, Mr. Nick? Now you won’t be able to get around…
Phoenix: Oh. Haha. Don’t worry about that. I can find an alternative. There are lots of buses around here, after all.
Pearl: Oh, I see.
Maya: It’ll be like how we get around. No harm in getting a little exercise, right?
Pearl: But isn’t riding a bike also exercise?
Maya: It’s a different kind of exercise. Besides, if Nick hunches over on a bike too long, he might just get back problems eventually!
Phoenix: Um, I don’t think it works like that, Maya…
Pearl: Hmm… Then, I guess it’s not too bad?
Maya: Nah. Besides, Nick’s had that old thing for years! It’s about time he got a new one anyway.
Phoenix: Y-yeah, maybe… (If only I were able to retire it peacefully rather than because of an accident…)
Pearl: Okay, then… *wipes up tears* …I’m glad to hear you two are still doing okay. I got really worried.
Maya: Aww. Thanks for caring, Pearly.
Phoenix: Thanks, Pearls. We’ll be fine.
Pearl: …You had better be! You two haven’t even gotten to the honeymoon yet! It would be a disaster if you two broke up before it!
Phoenix, Maya: *groan*

Would Miles Edgeworth Recieve Mia Fey’s Blessing
One of the things I notice in Narumitsu headcanons, stories, comics, etc. on here is the idea that Mia would, for some reason, not support Phoenix dating Edgeworth. Now, Mia had died in Turnabout Sisters, meaning that she no longer has any business going into Phoenix’s life. Though, for the sake of using this argument, I’m going to use canon reasons for why I find this idea to be false. I’m also going to clarify that this is Phoenix Wright from the trilogy, so no one can use the “this is before *insert trilogy thing that happened* before Edgeworth was no longer an asshat.” We can all agree that Miles Edgeworth stopped being a complete and total asshat after Turnabout Goodbyes, right? Are we all in agreement to that? Good. Can we also agree that, due to Miles Edgeworth’s trauma he was dealing with, him and Phoenix had little to no interaction and could not have the foundations of any relationship whatsoever? Yes? Good. We are now on the same page, meaning that Phoenix could not be in a relationship of any kind with Miles Edgeworth before Turnabout Goodbyes where most of everyone would be raising some eyebrows at the idea of Phoenix Wright being in a relationship with Miles Edgeworth during his asshat days. Moving on.
Let’s start off with a possible time for Phoenix to start a relationship, ignoring the Dahlia/Iris situation because maybe Phoenix decided to settle down on a relationship despite his ex girlfriend drama from college. Since Miles Edgeworth would not be allowing contact of any kind with Phoenix until after Turnabout Goodbyes, we can start it out between Turnabout Goodbyes and the time he wrote “Miles Edgeworth Chooses Death.” Now, what would Mia know about Miles Edgeworth at this point? To understand this, we need to go down the list of times when Mia had met with Miles Edgeworth. The first time was Turnabout Beginnings, being the reason why so many people think she would not support Phoenix having a relationship with him. But then, we also have Turnabout Sisters and Turnabout Samurai to consider. In Turnabout Sisters, Mia had possessed Maya in order to expose Redd White by handing Phoenix a list of people he had blackmailed, which Phoenix had presented to the court. In Turnabout Samurai, Mia had appeared to help Phoenix investigate and gain information from Cody, who becomes a valuable witness. She also appears with Phoenix during the second trial of Turnabout Samurai. She has witnessed Edgeworth’s general way of prosecuting, which was very normal for the most part. No withholding evidence or anything like what happened in Turnabout Sisters, if Mia ever knew what he did, or Turnabout Beginnings, which Mia did say that Edgeworth was affected by, after Terry Fawles’ suicide. Also, keep in mind that five years have passed since then, meaning that Mia can see some maturity on Edgeworth’s part. Wouldn’t be enough to consider him trustworthy, but not enough to automatically not take Phoenix’s word for it, if he says that Edgeworth isn’t a bad person. After this is Turnabout Goodbyes where Mia is never shown at any point, since Maya cannot summon her.
With this, we can conclude that, while Mia does have reason to not consider Edgeworth a trustworthy man for Phoenix’s affections, due to Turnabout Beginnings, it’s also not enough to declare him as a bad person for Phoenix. If Phoenix has, indeed, known Miles Edgeworth as a child and had been around him more times than Mia was channeled, she has no reason to doubt Phoenix’s judgement. After all, if she was to speculate what kind of a man Miles Edgeworth is based on what she has seen from him, she doesn’t have a reason to say “no.” There is the possibility that Mia may’ve gotten the story of Edgeworth through Maya, but even that would also include the time Miles Edgeworth had helped out Phoenix in Turnabout Samurai. As for Turnabout Sisters, considering that Mia knows of Miles Edgeworth’s involvement with DL-6, she’d conclude that he was blackmailed by Redd White, who is known for blackmailing prosecutors, judges and all kinds of higher-ups, including Marvin Grossberg, who abandoned Maya’s defense for a painting. Between trusting your sister’s protection under a man that values his painting over her little sister and Phoenix trusting a man that was blackmailed by the same guy for being a possible killer of his father, Mia really wouldn’t have any room to talk. If anything, she’d be more understanding than anyone of Phoenix’s feelings. He trusts Edgeworth despite what kind of man he became. How can Mia not understand something like that? Doesn’t she also have someone that’s a prosecutor, who also became very bitter and cold after a certain case that will be brought back later after Turnabout Goodbyes? No, not Diego, I mean the other one that is Chief Prosecutor.
Now, at this point, Mia would question Phoenix if he is sure that Edgeworth is someone he can trust. Though, at the end of the day, Mia knows she doesn’t really know who Edgeworth is. Even Maya knows more of who Edgeworth is than Mia does. If Maya is supportive of Phoenix being in a relationship with Edgeworth, then I don’t see why Mia couldn’t be. I also don’t see why Maya wouldn’t be supportive of their relationship, after Turnabout Goodbyes, so there shouldn’t be a problem. Mia will have no problem. She trusts Phoenix and Maya. It does not matter that Edgeworth was an asshat in Turnabout Beginnings, because that was five years ago and, as far as Mia is concerned, Edgeworth has not proven to not be trustworthy. Even if she knew of what Miles Edgeworth did in Turnabout Sisters and Turnabout Samurai, she’d also know that Miles Edgeworth was likely blackmailed in Turnabout Sisters and helped out phoenix in Turnabout Samurai. Mia would especially give Edgeworth her blessing, if she knew what had happened in Turnabout Goodbyes. In conclusion, Mia Fey would be supportive of Phoenix’s relationship with Edgeworth?
What about the events of Justice For All then? Wouldn’t Edgeworth, leaving the fake suicide note and Phoenix hurt and angry be enough to damage any blessing Mia would have for Edgeworth? Absolutely not! First off, we need to clarify when Phoenix would’ve been able to start any relationship with Edgeworth. Since Miles Edgeworth was studying abroad in Europe until Farewell my Turnabout, we can conclude that it would’ve been then. At this point, only Pearl would’ve been able to summon Mia and there is no way Phoenix would break the News to her, unless he wants a whoopin from a passionate Pearly, who thinks Phoenix is Maya’s special someone. Now, Phoenix could break the news to Mia, while she is being summoned, but then that would mean it would have to have been during trial or the Defendant’s Lobby, most likely the Defendant’s Lobby and away from Matt Engarde’s ears. Sounds like the only reasonable times Phoenix would’ve started a relationship with Edgeworth before informing Mia? Good.
At this very moment, Mia has seen Phoenix’s anger over Edgeworth leaving the suicide note. If she didn’t know about the events of Turnabout Goodbyes, she’d still be aware that Edgeworth was dealing with personal issues. She knows about DL-6, so she can make her own conclusions. If anything, Phoenix would be more upset than Mia, who’d be more sympathetic than anything. Though, I doubt if Mia didn’t know about the events of Turnabout Goodbyes, considering that Maya would definitely want to tell the story to her sister, since it does affect them and what happened to their mother. At the time Phoenix would have the opportunity to start a relationship with Edgeworth, even while ignoring his anger towards Edgeworth for the fake suicide note, Mia would experience the outcome of it. She’d see that Edgeworth is making sacrifices and doing everything he can to find Maya. Mia would be the most dependent on Edgeworth. The fact Phoenix told Mia that he can’t break Edgeworth’s trust, after everything he’s done, then realizing that he trusted Edgeworth before getting the, “yes, you do,” from Mia, tells us how much she knows about Phoenix’s feelings. If Phoenix loves and trusts Edgeworth, Mia would understand and, again, support it. Why wouldn’t she support Phoenix dating the man that saved her sister? After Farewell my Turnabout, I can’t see Mia not finding the events of Turnabout Beginnings being water under the bridge.
Any other time passed Farewell my Turnabout should be proven what I’ve mentioned above. As I said, after Farewell my Turnabout, I can’t see Mia not allowing the events of Turnabout Beginnings being water under the bridge or bygones be bygones. Mia has seen Edgeworth in court, how he conducts a trial and how he handles a situation of blackmail and hostages, which was better than Grossberg ever did. How could Mia not give Edgeworth her blessing, after he saved her sister from Shelly De Killer of all people? Even Phoenix would let bygones be bygones, if someone like Manfred Von Karma did the same for Trucy in a similar fashion.
Mia isn’t stupid or petty. She might be a protective mother of sorts, but she’s not going to dictate who Phoenix has feelings for or how he lives his life. Now, Mia did tell Phoenix to forget about Dahlia and never bothering to mention about Iris, but that could be more for Iris’ sake than Phoenix’s. I’m sure Mia did intend on informing Phoenix or having him reunite with Iris at some point, but Iris was escaping from an abusive situation with her sister. The point is, Mia isn’t someone that’s going to keep Phoenix from pursuing a romantic relationship. It’s not to say she won’t warn Phoenix, if he is dating someone that he shouldn’t trust, but in the case of Miles Edgeworth, Mia won’t need to. Any point in time that Phoenix would start a relationship with Edgeworth, Mia would have no reason to object to it. She may get upset, if the relationship started before the suicide note, but again, Farewell my Turnabout will be enough to let that be water under the bridge.
This goes into my main issue with having Mia be upset or “concerned” for Phoenix having a relationship with Edgeworth. It makes her seem petty and hypocritical and Mia is anything, but that. I’m sure a lot of people will be like, “you’d be angry too, if someone called you a ‘bimbo.’” Aside from the fact that was in the English version and we don’t know if that’s what he actually called her in the original Japanese, that was said on trial. It’s expected for the opposing attorneys to rip each other a new one. Heck, even Mia wasn’t afraid to rip Edgeworth or even Godot a new one. That’s kinda expected in court. If it is because of Edgeworth withholding evidence and a witness, how is that any different from what’s expected or even better than what Lana Skye did, who was supposedly Mia’s college friend. Even Mia’s boyfriend said that was expected. Also, keep in mind that it was their first case that took place five years prier to Phoenix meeting Edgeworth again.
I think the reason people have Mia respond negatively to Phoenix dating Edgeworth is mostly because they see Turnabout Beginnings and think, “Oooooh, Mia must not like Edgeworth then” and I find that to be inaccurate. True, Mia didn’t like Edgeworth in Turnabout Beginnings, but other things have happened since then. Edgeworth had helped out Phoenix, saved Maya, helped make peace with Franziska and will eventually help Phoenix again in T&T by going in his stead. That’d be like making the claim that Phoenix would have an issue with Apollo dating Klavier, if that were possible, which would make Phoenix look hypocritical and petty. Does the main conflict for Phoenix dating Edgeworth have to involve a third party or his mentor/parental figure being overprotective? No romantic relationship is without its hurtles and, more times than not, it isn’t by a third party. If a parental figure gets involved, it often means the two were never meant to be together to begin with.
Considering what Mia saw with Edgeworth and even the kind of people she trusted like Grossberg, who threw her sister under the bus over an ugly ass painting, I doubt Mia would find it a big deal for Phoenix to pursue a romantic relationship with Edgeworth. At best, she might be skeptical, if it happened before the suicide note, but would be completely fine if it was after or during Farewell my Turnabout. Now, Maya pursuing a relationship with Franziska, on the other hand, might be a different story, but that’s for another topic.
What do you guys think?
