Not sure if anyone in character can answer this question but are there any major events that took place in the 'bots and 'cons universe that paralleled with *our* dimension. (Eg. the-pandemic-that-should-not-named)

“Coronavirus??” Aj drawled, her face twisted in thought, “Hang on that sounds familiar actually.”

Aubrey nodded, “It was that pandemic I told you about. The bulk of it took place in Spring of 2020. The twins were 11 going 12 and Pete about 15.”

Aj shrugged, “That vaguely sounds familiar?”

“It was a crazy time. Everything was under quarantine, the kids school year ended at the start of March. All the Autobots thought we were going to die.”

“What???” Aj pressed in worry.

Aubrey waved nonchalantly, “We followed protocol and we were in no real danger, but there were a few weeks where Ratchet wanted us all to live deep underground.”

Aj rubbed her face, “God, I love Ratchet to death, but I don't know if I could survive quarantine with him breathing down my neck.” She glanced at her sister, “Hell, I can’t believe I missed a freaking pandemic.”

“It was a troubling time and unfortunately a lot of people died, but humans did what humans always do. We persevered. People made sacrifices for their neighbors, healthcare and essential workers risked themselves in order to keep society functioning, and eventually we made it through it.” Aubrey smiled but it faltered at a follow-up thought, “Granted, there were a number of people who tried to protest the quarantine because they thought it was unjust and they wanted their lives to return to normal, risk be damned.”

Aj scoffed, “Well that’s the beauty of humanity, huh? Our spectrum runs from the selfless and heroic all the way to the flat out numbskulls.”

Quick message to the crew! I know quarantine can be rough for a lot of reasons. I’m lucky enough that I had a loving family to fall back on and the resources to continue my education despite this giant hiccup, but I know not everyone is as blessed as I is. If you need someone to talk to during this time and you think I can help at all PLEASE REACH OUT TO ME. I’d be more than happy to talk anything out with anyone!

And the med student in me has to also add to please be careful! Quarantine does suck, but resist the urge to break it unless absolutely necessary! And when you do go out, whether for groceries or errands, please wear a mask and be sure to always wash your hands! (Ratchet’ll hunt you down otherwise.)

Some scattered thoughts as I rewatch Reboot MST3K’s first episode

I wonder whether the decision to make the “story” more prominent was a creative decision or an executive mandate. Original MST3K didn’t have a story so much as an excuse - a premise that is explained in a catchy song that simultaneously tells you not to think too hard about it. The Sci-Fi channel seasons put a bit more emphasis on the “story” than the Comedy central seasons, but Reboot MST3K is even more focused on telling a narrative. It’s not a bad choice, mind you, I just wonder whose choice it was.

Reboot MST3K is fun but I wish they’d learn that fast paced jokes aren’t the only form of comedy - there can be just as much humor in a slow, deadpan delivery. Old school MST3K was like Aubrey Plaza, lulling you into a false sense of security by delivering jokes at a casual pace, only for your brain to realize exactly what the punchline was a split second later and explode with laughter. The rapid fire riffing of reboot MST3K doesn’t work quite as well, and the only way you can prevent your brain from making the unfavorable comparison is to never watch old school MST3K in the first place.

I also think they should have made new bots for reboot MST3K, partly so it could have more of its own identity, and also because I think Crow, Tom Servo, and Gypsy deserve the escape from the SOL they had in the original show. But that’s less a critique and more a personal preference.

You could make a good Kaiju Drawing Prompt list from the mythological monsters brought up in the “Every Country Has a Monster” song, especially since most of the mythic monsters they bring up aren’t ACTUALLY giant monsters. A kaijufied Baba Yaga would be really rad...

So now it's Cherry, Dyno bot, Marriage Bot, and MEE6 Bot. We called this Botfia because 3/4 of the players are literally bots. And they're actually playing the game correctly.

There’s this trend I’ve noticed recently, where women are ridiculing men for being afraid and unwilling to be affectionate with their friends because they don’t want to be seen as gay. And ladies? We need to stop.

It sounds ridiculous, right? “We can be physically affectionate with each other without having to be violent, why can you just figure out how to hug?”

“Stop being weird about it, hugging your friends doesn’t make you gay.”

“Get over yourselves, we have real issues to talk about”

”No one cares that you don’t want to be called ‘gay’ because ‘gay’ isn’t an insult!”

These are all things that I’ve heard and read in regard to men getting the courage to step up and speak out about something that is deeply affecting the potential of many platonic male relationships. And yeah on the surface, maybe it doesn’t sound bad to tell someone that they shouldn’t be offended if they’re perceived as ‘gay’, because there is nothing inherently wrong with that. That’s true, but that’s also not the core of the problem, here. Assuming attraction to men isn’t the issue, it’s assuming attraction at all.

Ladies, how many of you remember that boy you knew when you were a kid. You’ve probably grown apart by now for some reason or another - or maybe you haven’t. Do you remember both of your mothers laughing to each other about how cute the two of you are? “Oh look, Zack’s first girlfriend!” “Aubrey’s got herself a little boyfriend!” “Aaron and Matilda are going to make such a cute couple when they get married!” “I can’t wait to see what their babies look like!”

Do you remember watching your father “jokingly” give a little boy the shovel talk if he dared break your heart, and laughing that he’d probably do it anyway? Do you remember being a little girl who just wanted to play with her friend who happened to be a boy, and not understanding why all your girlfriends were allowed to come to the sleep over, bot not your boyfriend? Do you remember when you came home from school, excited to tell your parents about your boyfriend, your boy-that-is-a-friend, and not knowing why they laughed and teased and cooed over how cute you were? Do you remember the first time you realized that everyone understood what you meant when you said ‘girlfriend’, and it didn’t make sense why ‘boyfriend’ would be any different?

When I was seven, I knew a boy named Alex. Also seven, of course. I was an American transplant living in Germany, I had just moved there, and making friends was hard. So for a long time, it was just me and Alex. Back home in California, I used to have sleepovers all the time. I asked if Alex could sleep over so we could play Dungeon’s & Dragons - our own much less complicated and much more convoluted version of it. And our parents said no. Because you can’t let little girls and boys sleep over, not even when they’re seven years old and don’t understand the knowing looks their parents are trading.

I’ve never once met a girl that didn’t have countless experiences like mine. I don’t even know how many I’ve had; Alex, Brody, James, Jason, Tyler, Taylor. So many more. I’m not friends with any of them anymore, I haven’t been for years, because girls aren’t allowed to be ‘friends’ with boys.

And now that same thing is happening with an all new, bitter flavor. I remember how queasy it made me feel when adults always joked about me ‘dating’ my boy-friends - years before I even knew what romantic interest felt like. I didn’t understand why we couldn’t just be friends. Why couldn’t our parents see that we don’t want to do those gross kissy-face-things, we just wanted to hunt around for frogs and fireflies at night?

Now, guys can’t feel comfortable expressing affection for each other, because in this new age of acceptance, we will point to them as an example of love, and say “Isn’t that sweet?” “They look so good together.” “#RelationshipGoals.” How are we any different than our parents?

We’re not.

It’s the same old idea, even if we’ve stuck a new label on it and made it our own. We tell boys to be soft, to love their friends gently, to stop performing toxic masculinity that says you can only ever touch to hurt. And then we punish them for it. When they ask us to stop, we punish them for that too, and we are no better than our parents when they wouldn’t listen to us.

We want kind men that will support their friends like Frodo and Sam, like Bilbo and Thorin. Who aren’t afraid to feel, to show their emotions, to cry and talk about why. Who don’t have to hide their true feelings from their friends because what if a touch or a compliment is interpreted the wrong way.

Well then why don’t we start by letting them be friends. Just like we always wanted for ourselves.

A “Brief” Word about the Future of this Blog

I know I don’t have a ton of followers, but I felt like I owed you an explanation as to why the content you see is about to change dramatically. This will probably get a bit long, so if you want the TL;DR, here it is:

This blog is about to become much more focused on tabletop gaming and specifically rules questions within tabletop gaming. If you want to see the same kind of stuff you’ve been seeing, I’ll be posting it at my new sideblog, fistsofcurie.tumblr.com

So, when I started this tumblr, I initially planned for it to be an outlet for a blog I started on an external website called the Supreme Court of Gaming. The idea was that people would send in questions and disputes dealing with the rules of tabletop games (which can frequently be complex, vague, imprecise, etc.) to be resolved by a neutral party (me). At the outset of this project, I posted several cases I’d come across in my own gaming experience just to have content to post, but the idea was that it would eventually be driven primarily or entirely by submissions from other people. Unfortunately, I underestimated how difficult it was to build awareness of online content and my complete lack of knowledge of how to do that effectively. I started a facebook page for the blog, told my friends about it, posted about it on gaming forums, etc., but it never really got any traction, and I think I only ever got one submission from a reader. I started this tumblr late in the blog’s life cycle in an attempt to reach a wider audience and build more awareness.

Unfortunately, upon registration, tumblr informed me that as a new account, my posts wouldn’t be visible to others (or maybe just not show up in searches, I don’t remember) until I proved I wasn’t a bot by acting like a normal human on tumblr (i.e. liking, reblogging, posting, etc.) At this point, I was already pretty discouraged, and the idea of either throwing my posts into the void for a while or posting a bunch of unrelated content and then trying to wrangle my blog back around to its original purpose did not appeal at all. It was abandoned at its inception and I never really used it.

Flash forward a few years. The Supreme Court of Gaming has long been out of session due to no one bringing any cases. I’ve always regretted that it never took off, but never really had any ideas for how to get it back off the ground. I decided to get on tumblr largely to check out the Adventure Zone fandom, since I was getting really into the podcast at the time and eager for more content. That’s probably how most of you found my blog (I’m the one with the post about Duck meeting Aubrey for the first time).

I started posting fandoms, funnies, and whatever else struck my fancy, generally enjoying myself along the way. However, the original purpose of this blog has been in the back of my mind the whole time, and at this point, I’ve decided to give it another shot. My hope is that tumblr’s tagging and searching system will allow more people to find my posts and maybe generate some interest and some asks.

So what does this mean for you, you may ask? Well, effective immediately, I will no longer be posting the type of content you’ve seen on this blog previously. I’ll probably reblog this post a few times over the next few days just to make sure everyone sees it. After that, I’ll start posting the old cases from my old blog, maybe with some general tabletop content mixed in, and we’ll see what happens from there. Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: B&B getting together, “I’m pregnant, you’re the father” and wedding vows. All the births and weddings because I’m a sap. When it really disappointed you: Very rarely. Forever bitter about the lack of Michael Vincent. I was originally bummed we didn’t get “the scene” of B&B getting together, but couldn’t care less at all by S7. Saddest moment: Sweet’s death. Most well done character death: I guess Vincent Nigel-Murray? Favourite guest star: Cyndi Lauper, Betty White, so adorable seeing David and Emily’s family make small appearances also! Favourite cast member: Emily Deschanel Character you wish was still alive: Max! One thing you hope really happens: I got pretty much everything I wanted out of this show! Most shocking twist: When it looked like Zack might be the Puppet Master (even though I guessed where they were going weeks before), that that’s how they’d bring him back anyway. When did you start watching/reading?: Late S5/early S6 Best animal/creature: we didn’t have any! I wish someone had gotten a dog or something. Favourite location: Mighty Hut Trope you wish they would stop using: they inverted or did opposite of a lot of tropes for the most part (not going with the cheating bisexual/cheating storylines in general, Strong Independent Black Woman, token characters etc ). I used to get annoyed with the “let’s have brennan behave childishly so we can teach her a lesson” formula at times. One thing this show/book/film does better than others: Funniest moments: double death of the dearly departed in general, angela being hit with the flying frozen turkey, cam being a victim of hodgins’ experiements and constantly walking in on hodgela, brennan’s bachelorette party, hodgins’ “giving birth” to a bot fly Couple you would like to see: I’m good Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: it’s kinda over so. Favourite outfit: Anything Angela wears tbh. Favourite item: Jasper, Cat salt and pepper shakers Do you own anything related to this show/book/film?: The DVD’s. The two companion books that were made (I wish they’d done them for S6 and on as well!), a Bones and an Emily & David buttons, that’s about it. This show has zero merch! What house/team/group/friendship group/family/race etc would you be in?: Most boring plotline: The Ghost Killer arc maybe. The show rarely bored me outside of a few slow episodes here and there. Most laughably bad moment: The dream Brennan had about all the Pelant’s and the falling Bones in S9 omg Best flashback/flashfoward if any: Parts in the Sum of the whole. Also in love with the way A Day in the Life was shot with all the different POV’s!! Most layered character: Brennan I think. Most one dimensional character: I don’t think he’s one dimensional, but Booth is probably the only character with the least noticeable development. Scariest moment: Right before the Jeffersonian blows up was really intense. Grossest moment: The gooey type bodies Best looking male: Arastoo, Booth, Hodgins Best looking female: Brennan, Angela and Cam, there’s no choosing okay Who you’re crushing on (if any): Finn probably, when he was around. And Angela is my babe. Favourite cast moment: Paleyfest panels, all the gag reels, the retrospective interview Favourite transportation: Hodgin’s toy car lol Most beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise): Lots of shots from the Pilot. Whenever David directs there’s some amazing shots. Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: The fact that Michael Vincent never got to speak one word (they really couldn’t delete a few minutes of something and thrown in a few Hodgela family scenes?) Angela’s mom never being even mentioned once in passing. What happened to Finn? The Pelant story was a bit all over the place motive wise, but I still really enjoy the individual episodes of the arc. Didn’t get the puppet master’s random obsession with Brennan or a few other things. Best promo: Dead Man’s Party! At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: Mid S6
