Official October Halloween/Horror watchlist

“Totally Killer” (2023)

Loved this weird crime podcast/time-traveling/Molly Ringwald-obsessed slasher movie. It’s also funny with great 80’s music. And the lovely Kiernan Shipka.

“The Night House” (2020)

I love when you think you know where a film is going only to be completely blindsided by an even better ending. Rebecca Hall is amazing as always.

“Werewolf by Night” (2022)

Gael García Bernal is reason enough for me to watch anything so when it turns out to be a fun little horror monster film it’s a win-win situation.

“The Others” (2001)

I saw this in cinemas and then never again because I thought it wouldn't work on a second watch. I was wrong, it's still just as good and hasn't aged at all.

“Scream” (2023)

Some nice moments, and I do like the meta twist in the end. But it’s been so long since I saw the original (and never seen the sequels) that I feel like I missed half the jokes/plot references.

“Malignant” (2021)

I get why so many hated this but I thought it was a refreshing horror movie that still maintains what has always worked - but it’s not the greatest movie ever.

Redacted characters nails/nailart headcanons:

inspired by this post by @cadamari

Gavin - he has natural demonic claws, they're black and slightly hooked, but this man has definitely done every single possible nail design under the sun. His favourite are probably dark pink with a sparkle.

Huxley - keeps them short for his sports and to not collect dirt under them, likes to have them in natural colours but all nails different. Definitely has painted them in his team colours.

Lasko - poor baby bites his nails too much, so he usually has them short as well and painted only by that transparent polish that's supposed to be bitter. Honestly, it's just an acquired taste.

Damien - keeps them the perfect length and perfect shape, often just polished, but sometimes likes to paint them some neutral calm colour with minimalistic geometrical stamping.

Caelum - saw Gavin's nails and wanted to have something similar, of course, asked Gavin himself or the freelancer and they painted his nails in different bright colours. It didn't stay long, because of how much he likes "crafty projects" and because, I would assume, you have to make a conscious effort for a d(a)emon to keep something like this in physical form.

David - keeps his nails in okay state, has several times indulged Angel and let them paint his nails. Only black though.

Asher - pretty short well trimmed nails that he usually has either black with sparkles or black with metallic - to fit with the collar (and e-boy aesthetic /hj).

Milo - never cared about his nails much - he can have claws any time, always liked Sweetheart's sharp nails though.

Vincent - perfect nails, shorter than Gavin's but pretty long and with sharp endings - full stiletto. Usually paints them something dark, but never pure black.

Sam - used to have very short and well kept nails when he was a practising healer, but then stopped caring about them. Started caring again, when he tried to scold Darling for messy/broken nails.

Avior - naturally good demonic nails, shorter than Gavin's but still sharp.

Cam - same as Avior, but likes to keep them oval or almond - just sharp enough for good scalp massage.

Elliott - moderately long square nails with sparkles. Always sparkles or reflective foil - because stars, of course.

Ollie - unfortunately their office doesn't let them have painted nails, but he keeps them covered with transparent polish and paints them super bright/current-hyperfixation-themed during vacations.

Aaron - keeps them polished without actual cover, never paints them. (Has painted them bright pink once during a vacation on a bet with Smartass.)

Geordi - pretty short nails, likes sliders with different funky pictures. Definitely had a Tetris themed nailart at some point.

FlyBoi!Ivan - he and original Baby used to paint each other's nails as teenagers, but then he moved away and stopped doing it especially when he started working at the office. When he came back they've returned the tradition.

Guy - can't really do much with his nails, since he's working in the kitchen (hi, Arsenal), but definitely lets Honey do whatever they want with his hands during his vacations. Doesn't mean he won't whine that they're trying to pull his fingers or something.

This is something that might actually exist but if it does I have yet to stumble upon it:

I really wish there was like, a multimedia version of the letterboxd lists feature. Like so you can include movies, shows, books, comics, albums, games, etc…

the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"

just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible

#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order #at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers #90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit “lost copies” #serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent #like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries #but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate #and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited... #i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something #cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare #and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest. #it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!' #'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members... #..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)' #anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language? #maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity #and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media #and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons #and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators #instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period #anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate “value” #and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives #so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs) #happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world #(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills) #and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on... #...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin #oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works? #beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value #and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the #important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

I went from one extreme to another in videos I watch on YouTube. I was obsessed with true crime videos. Now I watch Scrapbooking and Room Makeover Videos

The same day I had a tooth extracted. I broke my toe

I never really understood the fandom in fighting memes. For me if it has a good story I will watch it.

I am an adult toy collector. 

Due to watching scrapbooking videos. I have been researching scrapbook supplies and plan to subscribe to two letter of the month programs. [one is about history and the other one is world travel related. The scrapbook will be for them.]

 I have been a fan of the comedian Jeff Dunham since I was 11 and including working during a few of his appearances at the BOK Center. I have seen him eight times. The last three times he’s been there I have paid to see him

I prefer not to use hair dryers I either wash my hair the night before I work or the same morning.

Unless the regular host is on vacation I listen to Saturday Cinema [a two hour block of music from film and tv scores] on Public Radio, every Saturday.

 I have been subscribed to the YourClassical.com daily downloads newsletter for almost 7 years.

I am currently obsessed with roleplaying on AI websites and Astarion from Baldur’s Gate 3. I have never played Baldur’s Gate 3 [I am only familiar with clips on YouTube.]

you're in the habit of denying yourself things.

if someone asked you directly, you would say that you love a little treat. you like iced coffee and getting the cookie. you drink juice out of a fancy cup sometimes, and often do use your candles until they gutter out helplessly.

but you hesitate about buying the 20 dollar hand mixer because, like. you could just use your arms. you weren't raised rich. you don't get to just spend the 20 dollars (remember when that could cover lunch?), at least - you don't spend that without agonizing over it first, trying to figure out the cost-benefits like you are defending yourself in front of a jury. yes, this rice cooker could seriously help you. but you do know how to make stovetop rice and it really isn't that hard. how many pies or brownies would you actually make, in order to make that hand mixer worthwhile?

what's wild is that if the money was for a friend, it would already be spent. you'd fork over 40 without blinking an eye, just to make them happy. the difference is that it's for you, so you need to justify it.

and it sneaks in. you ration yourself without meaning to - you don't finish the pint of ice cream, even though you want to. the next time you go to the store, you say ah, i really shouldn't, and then you walk away. you save little bits of your precious things - just in case. sometimes you even go so far as putting that one thing in your shopping cart. and then just leaving it there, because maybe-one-day, but not right now, there's other stuff going on.

you do self-care, of course. but you don't do it more than like, 3 days in a row. after that it just feels a little bit over-the-edge. like. you can't live in decadence, the economy is so bad right now, kid.

so you don't buy the rice cooker. you can-and-will spend the time over the stove. you can withstand the little sorrows. denial and discipline are practically synonyms. and you're not spoiled.

it's just - it's not always a rice cooker. sometimes it is a person or a job or a hug. sometimes it is asking for help. sometimes it is the summer and your college degree. sometimes it is looking down at scabbed knees and feeling a strange kind of falling, like you can't even recognize the girl you used to be. sometimes it is your handprint looking unsteady.

sometimes it is tuesday, and you didn't get fired, and you want to celebrate. but what is it you like, even? you search around your little heart and come up empty. you're so used to denying that all your desires draw a blank.

oh fuck. see, this is the perfect opportunity. if you had a mixer, you'd make a cake.

#warm up #this isn't good #writeblr #this is complicated by the fact i can't stand up too long or i fuckken pass out and <3 hit my damn head <3 #but i did take a deep breath and buy myself the stupid rice cooker #and!!! a very cheap sushi kit!!! i have been wanting to try making sushi for literally YEARS #the kit was only like 15 dollars!!!! and i haven't purchased it bc?!!??!?!?!?!!? #..... i didn't get the mixer tho that felt. like a lot. like too much. #on my list is a kitchenaid. one day when i get a check and i have paid off my student debt #and medical debt #i will put that first little bit of cash #into a kitchenaid 5qt stand mixer (with attachments) #i really do just go into their refurbished section and stare lustily at each option #but yeah i feel guilty about the rice cooker even tho i know for a fact this damn thing is gonna be a lifesaver #oh shit also fuck i forgot to mention . poached eggs

domvs - a gothic mystery game in which you rely on your environment to uncover the truth.

flesh, blood, & concrete - you find yourself in a vast, empty apartment complex.

i am still here - a short, unconventional ghost story and vignette reflecting on the end of a long lockdown.

vacant - Film a ghost-hunting show.
