under the mistletoe, watching the fire glow day 10: pen pal
Character A and Character B both sign up for a Christmas Pen Pal project to exchange post cards,, percabeth. not just letters I promise
01/04/2008
Hi! My name’s A, and I’m eight years old. Well, my name isn’t actually A, but I don’t know you yet so I can’t tell you my real name. I don’t know your name, and you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.
I don’t know why I’m doing this whole pen pal thing. I just thought it would be fun, but I don’t really know what to expect either. I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself.
My favorite color is grey, like my eyes. I like to read a lot too. I don’t have many friends, but that’s just because I don’t like talking to people. They start to talk, and it makes me feel like I want to hit them, so I prefer to just be by myself. I wouldn’t mind being your friend, though. I don’t have to hear you talk.
Hope I get your response soon! Goodbye until then!
Love, A.
,,
01/27/2008
Dear A,
I guess you can call me P then. I’m eight years old too, so that’s cool! We’re practically best friends already. I’m doing the pen pal thing because my teacher says I should practice writing. I’m not very good at writing, but I promiss prommis promise I’ll get better for you!
I like to swim. The water is cold where I live, but I still go in anyways. My mom says I’ll get hypothermia, but I do it anyways because it’s fun. I wonder if you like the water too? You’re crazy if you don’t, but it’s okay. I’ll be your friend anyways. I have one friend, but I don’t really like them very much. They’re mean to me a lot. You seem much nicer.
I’m so excited to get to talk to you!
From P :)

05/07/2012
Hey, P! It’s been a couple of months since we spoke. I’ve missed my mystery-stranger-pen-pal-person. Hope you’re doing well.
Honestly, not much has happened with me. It’s the end of sixth grade, thank god. I actually hate all of my teachers. Especially the history one. She makes something that could be so interesting so dull, and it’s upsetting. There’s so much to tell about the past, and she’s ruining it. I’d consider saying something to her, but you know how it is.
I’ll just complain to you instead ;)
I remember you said you were applying to the swim team, and I think that’s so exciting! I know the try-outs passed, so let me know if you got in! (and if you didn’t, don’t worry about it. You don’t need to explain it to me if you don’t want to.)
Anyways, eagerly awaiting your response (but not that eagerly. It’ll be a couple of weeks, if not more.)
Love, A.
,,
05/20/2012
A! I’m insulted that you would think I didn’t make it onto the swim team. I am one with the fish. I am living my dream of swimming around the water like a turtle. It’s been pretty fun actually, except for when I ran into a wall and nearly bust my head open months ago. We don’t like to speak of that moment.
And yes, your history teacher is absolutely bizzare bizarre. I’m not the best with grades and spelling (clearly. I mean, look at my spelling of “bizarre”) but history is one of my better subjects, surprisingly. I think that it’s because the past is so important. My mom always likes to tell me that without the past, we wouldn’t learn for the future, so I try to pay attention to that class. I’m sorry you don’t like it :(
I really missed talking to you too. I don’t even know your name (cue frown), but I feel like I’ve known you my entire life. A person I can talk to when there’s no one else.
You’re my best friend (though I do love the term “mystery-stranger-pen-pal person).
Sincerely, P.
,,
10/7/2016
P! Get ready for my rant because I’m about to go off, and you’re going to listen.
People always say that you lose friends sophomore year. I didn’t think that was true. BOY, was I wrong. I’ve lost, like, twenty friends. I thought I’d be more upset about it, but honestly, I’m relieved. They always made me feel excluded, and without them, I’m not going home near tears every day.
I did meet a guy. His name is Luke, and he’s a junior. We’re not dating, but I wouldn’t mind it if we did. Not that I think it’ll ever happen because I’m too focused on school, but it would be nice to at least be friends. He’s really nice.
Also! The last letter was two months ago (?) and you said your school placed second in the state competition! Does that mean you’re going to nationals?
If you are, I am so proud of you. You seriously have to let me know how that goes.
Until next time.
Love, A.
,,
10/27/2016
A, my love!
As your best friend, I am obligated to say that you must not let the man be an obstacle to your schoolwork. I say this because I want you to do well. (Also because I’m in love with you)
Really though, I’m happy for you. I hope everything works out and you’re happy. That’s all that matters.
As for the sophomore thing, I felt that. I’ve never had all that many friends, but a lot of them changed. Change isn’t a bad thing I guess, but I wasn’t willing to stick around for them destroying themselves, so I didn’t. I’m always here if you need me.
(And I did place at states! Nationals was actually a few weeks ago! I didn’t place there, but I apparently got pretty close, which is awesome)
Love, P.
,,
04/03/2017
A! It’s been a while. I haven’t heard from you since October, and I just wanted to make sure you’re okay. Is that weird? I don’t know you but I’m checking in?
Oh well. I just really missed you. Not much has happened. Just wanted to say hi. Hope all is well.
Love, P.
,,
12/25/2017
A! Babes! Where are you? I’ve sent a few letters but haven’t gotten any responses. You’re kind of scaring me haha. Is it something I said?
I totally get if you don’t want to do this anymore, but just let me know please? I’m checking the mail every day and I keep getting more and more worried, so… Just let me know, please.
I miss you.
Love, P.
,,
06/01/2018
Dear A,
You never responded to any of my last letter. I get the feeling you’re not going to respond anymore, so I guess this is my last letter.
I graduated. Finally. It was a struggle, but I managed to bring my grades up. I even got accepted to a pretty good school. It’s not Ivy League, like I’m sure you got into. You’ve always been so smart.
I’m going to school in New York. I don’t think I’ve ever told you that in any of the 126 letters we’ve sent. I counted.
Anyways, I just really miss you. I hope you’re okay, and I really wish you the best.
My name’s Percy by the way.
Love, Percy.

12/24/2023
Percy jumps as his girlfriend wraps her arms around his shoulder and nips at his ear. He turns and gives her a playful look.
“You want to take me to the ground?” he asks.
Annabeth rolls her eyes, sliding her hand into his. She feels really warm, even in the cold air outside of Rockefeller Center. “I’m not that heavy.”
“What if I told you you’re wrong?”
“You would get no more kisses for today.”
“Oh, we can’t have that.” Percy’s arms slide to wrap around her waist and tug her closer to his. She doesn’t resist, hugging him back. Percy nudges her jaw with his nose until she turns her face up so he can kiss her. “You’re not heavy at all. Super light, actually.”
She hums, kissing him again. “Good answer.”
Percy laughs, letting him detangle himself from her. His hand goes back to hers, and they begin walking around the plaza, taking in the beautiful decorations. It’s really pretty outside. He’s always had a thing for Christmas and its sparkling lights. He loves the smell of the pine trees and the feel of the light snowflakes against his face.
Annabeth swings her hands between them, and he thinks she looks so cute with her hair down in the cold and nose turned red that he can’t help but kiss her on the cheek.
Percy catches sight of a large sign at a random booth sitting along the edge of one of the buildings. It’s decorated horribly in the most adorable way — no doubt done by children. It’s what it reads that really makes him doubletake.
He just barely manages to make out the words, Christmas Pen Pal Exchange.
It makes his heart ache. He hasn’t heard from A since sophomore year of high school when he was sixteen. He’s twenty-three now. He can’t believe it’s this close to ten years since he heard from her.
He misses her so much. It’s not that he necessarily needed her because he has Annabeth, and he wouldn’t trade that for the world. He’s in love with Annabeth. He thinks he’s going to marry her someday.
A helped him get through difficult times. He wishes he could at least know that she was okay, or why she stopped talking to him. He doesn’t care why it happened anymore. He just wants to know, and to tell her things he was always too scared to say.
Annabeth bumps his shoulder as they pass the booth. “You okay?”
Percy swallows the small lump in his throat that formed. “I’m okay.”
“You sure? You look like you’re about to cry.”
A part of Percy doesn’t want to tell her. He wants to keep it to himself because he has for so long. What he and A had was different.
The other part, and the bigger part, does want to tell Annabeth. He loves her and wants her to know every piece of him. Annabeth is Percy’s best friend now, and there’s no reason for him to keep something like this for her.
“It’s just.” Percy pauses, looking over his shoulder at the booth. “I did one of those when I was young.”
He expects her to tease him, so he’s surprised when she says, “I did too.”
Percy looks at her. “You did?”
“Yeah. I was eight, I think.”
Percy breaks into a smile. “So you were that kid with no friends in elementary.”
“Okay, mister, you wrote them too.”
“That’s how I know you were a loser back then. I was too.”
“A match made in heaven,” she says, wrapping herself in his arms to block the wind that’s begun to blow harder. “Do you still talk to them?”
“Not anymore,” he admits. “We just stopped talking.”
“Aw. Why?”
Percy breathes deeply. “I’m honestly not sure. She just stopped talking to me.”
“What an ass,” Annabeth says.
“Right?” Percy laughs slightly. “I miss her, to be honest. Is that weird? I just used to talk to her all the time, and then — nothing.”
“It’s not weird at all,” she tells him, snuggling her face into the crook of his neck. “I miss mine too.”
“Why’d you stop talking?”
“I moved here. I lost their address, and I got a new one. It just didn’t work after that.” She smiles, thinking of a fond memory. “They used to call me their best friend. The only one I had.”
Percy turns his nose up. “Well now you have me, so forget that guy. No man dares hurt my baby.”
“If I ever meet them, promise to beat their ass.”
“I’ll do my best,” he promises.
“What was their name?” she asks. “Of your pen pal?”
“I never found out,” he says. “She didn’t tell me her name. Only that it started with an A, so I called myself P, and we just kind of went on like that.”
The atmosphere suddenly turns cold as Annabeth stiffens in his arms.
“What is it?” he asks.
“You called yourself P? And the other person was A?”
Percy thinks to confirm before saying, “Yes. Why?”
“Did this person also meet a guy named Luke?”
Percy pulls away slightly. “How did you know that?”
“And you told them about your love for history at one point?” Percy suddenly feels lightheaded. “Annabeth…”
Annabeth’s lower lip trembled, and when she speaks, it comes out cracked. “I’m A.”
It hits him like a train, and Percy suddenly can’t breathe. His mouth opens for air, but his lungs fail him. His mind races, he doesn’t know what to say, and he feels like he’s going to pass out, and… “Oh my god,” is all he manages.
“Percy.”
“You’re A.”
Tears are falling from her eyes, and he doesn’t know how to feel. He doesn’t feel anything at all at first. It’s a weight off his chest, and he’s finally able to take a wrangled breath as it settles inside him. He feels something dripping down his face and realizes it’s tears.
He feels like he should be mad, but he’s not. He can’t be mad at Annabeth because he loves her so much, and he knows what happened, and it’s not her fault, and it’s not his either, and he’s in love with her.
Percy tugs her close. He doesn’t kiss her because right now, this is him seeing A again. His face is in his neck, and he can hear her sobs, and he’s sure his are just as bad. He pulls away, and he lets himself kiss her this time.
“I missed you so much,” he whispers into the kiss. He can taste the tears falling, but he pays it no attention. “I missed you, and I love you so much.”
“I’m sorry,” is what she says.
“Don’t,” he says, pulling away sharply. His voice is wobbly. “This is not your fault.”
Annabeth whimpers. “It feels like it.”
“It doesn’t matter. We found each other, and that’s all that matters, okay?” He wipes the tears from her face gently and kisses her forehead. “We found each other.”
“A twisted way of fate.”
Percy lets out a wet laugh. “It is, but it’s okay.”
“I love you,” she whispers.
There’s so much he wants to say back, but he would never have enough time to say it. “I love you too, mystery-stranger-pen-pal-person,” he whispers. He stays like that, her wrapped in his arms, and he doesn’t know how much time passes like this.
He kisses her, but this time it is as more than her boyfriend.
They are P and A.
Percy and Annabeth.
They are best friends and lovers in one.
He’s going to marry her. His best friend.
Percy and Annabeth.
P and A.

Crossover thoughts - Part 1
So the first thing… the first thing we see during the crossover is Nazi Dark Arrow killing Earth X Guardian, aka James Olsen, aka an African-American man. Am I the only one that was screaming at the screen thinking of the current white supremacy problem? Why was it even necessary to kill a hero like that right off the bat
Okay moving on.. those opening scenes crossing from Central City to Star City etc were amazing, seriously one of my favorite moments from the first two episodes.
We finally, finally get a shot of Olicity together on Oliver’s motorbike. It’s just a shame that they were the size of ants but hey at least it’s canon now!
I really like that they took the time for that Stein and Caitlin scene. It was such a lovely scene.
So Alex and Sara, I was expecting them to get it on, in fact I would have been shocked if they didn’t but I have to say I was surprised it happened so quickly. Although that doesn’t mean it won’t happen again in say.. episode 4.
The second Marvel reference that I know of this year (first being Felicity mentioning the hulk in The Flash 4.05) who would have thought? That whole Stein and Jax scene was cute mentioning Spider-Man and Jax being so hopeful at first until he released his super power would be sticking to things (I really need some @lordmesa-art fanart of Jax just sticking to a wall).
Aww Joe’s speech was perfect.
I could tell from the stills that were released that there was going to be some Olicity issues at the rehearsal dinner but oh my poor heart wasn’t ready for that. Oliver was just so sweet and clumsy about it which made it hurt all the more. Plus I love that he used her full name.
I gotta say, Mick Rory, was just about my favorite part of these two episodes. Wearing that dressing gown, the falling asleep at the ceremony, his crush on Caitlin and trying to ‘scare’ her into Killer Frost. Just all of it.
Oh my god.. is that Dawn.. is that doing to be Dawn Allen? OMG! are we really going to see Barry and Iris’s kid travel from the future? I love this.
Kara singing Iris down the isle was a lovely detail. Actually gave me some goosebumps.
Shame they cut the scene outside the church with Felicity, Iris and Joe helping the guests get to safety but I understand with so much going on why it was.
I’m confused about why they knocked Cisco unconscious. I’m guessing he is going to come to the rescue next episode since Felicity, Iris, Kara and Harry since they trapped in Star Labs. There have been spoilers of him driving the waverider at some point so I’m guessing he must wake up pretty soon into episode 3.
Prommy Tommy.. called this one way back in September when they release that first ‘comic’ poster. But I mean come on, did we have to watch Oliver watch his best friend die for a second time?
I’m really starting to get really frustrated with the idea of Oliver and other women. I’ve always though Oliver and Felicity were special but the writers keep showing Oliver in relationships with other women and where he is ‘all in’ he loves so easily which feels somewhat contradictory to his past and who he used to be. When he was with Sara he wanted to move in together. Last years crossover and it was marrying Laurel and this year its Earth X Oliver being married to Earth X Kara. The more they write these storylines the more frustrated I get. We have something special in Olicity, why can’t that be enough?
I completely understand Felicity being cautious about marrying Oliver and being scared after all that happened with them and what happened with her parents but I really wish they had let her explain to Oliver what she was really feeling and not that she doesn’t want to get married and to ‘respect her on this’. Feels unnecessarily cruel to leave Oliver hanging like that, giving him doubts about her love for him.
The more these episodes progressed with Martin talking about his family and retiring I kept repeating to myself like a mantra, please don’t let him die. I know there were spoilers about him dying and I know Victor is leaving the show but is it too much to hope that he gets to go off and retire in peace with his family? Please.
Iris and Felicity stuff is all great. I love that we are finally getting to see some female friendships get some much needed screen time and I hope there are even more scenes like this in the next 2 episodes.
‘Superspeed, I don’t have it’ scene was a funny little moment.
Thank you Kara for being grossed out about her doppelganger being married to Earth X Oliver.
Okay so this one is really bothering me, could someone please explain to me why Eobard gives a shit about saving Overgirl? I mean I get the plan was to take control of Earth 1 with their stupid regime but mostly they have been trying to save Earth X Kara, so again why does Eobard care? What’s his angle in all this?
Really liked the tech talk scene about tracking down Earth X Kara and I really loved that they included Alex in on it. I feel like her experience in bio-engineering gets forgotten a lot so it was nice that she’s included not just on the action sequences but this one too. And as much as I also liked the Felicity/Harry dynamic I did find myself missing Cisco.
That Oliver, Barry and Iris scene killed me again. How could Oliver think that Felicity doesn’t love him as much as he loves her?
Was anyone else extremely distracted by Caity Lotz stunt double? Her hair was several shades lighter and longer than Caity’s so I could instantly tell without trying when Caity was on screen and when it was her stunt double.
‘Anyone else want to be a hero’ actually cheered at this scene when NTA came in. I didn’t realise how much I had missed them til that happened.
I’ve been finding the group fight scenes in Arrow a little hard to follow lately it jumps so quickly from one person to another but I didn’t have that problem with the big fights scenes in the crossover. Not sure if that is to do with the size of the sets they were filming on or the stunt coordinator but it was good.
So how does Earth X Kara getting a new heart help her radiation issue? like.. that’s not how radiation poisoning works, it doesn’t just attach to one organ.
So Iris and Felicity weren’t captured just trapped in Star Labs. Maybe they have a hand in waking Cisco up before they get found?
Am I the only one who genuinely thought this episode was going to end of the cliffhanger of our favorite heroes on a firing line? I’m surprised it ended the way it did.
Okay so that’s it. While there were a lot of little moments I liked through these episodes I feel quite indifferent about them as a whole. That said though I’m very interested to see how things wrap up tomorrow. If only for that happy scene we know is coming at the end :)

The Chocobros' female S/O take them to an Asian house party
God I had too much fun with this.
Noctis:
Will hide out in the designated "kid's room" and play video games with your cousins until it's time to go out and eat.
A bunch of "You're so skinny! Don't they feed you at the Citadel?" comments from your grandmas and aunts.
They proceed to pile his loaded plate with even more food.
If he tells them that he doesn't eat vegetables they will give him the disapproving stare.
Tumblr media
"Who raised this boy?" "Auntie, you can't judge the king's parenting skills."
Be prepared to be used as bragging rights by your mom.
"Oh, your daughter got into an Ivy League, and your son excels in his sport yet is able to keep his grades up? Well my daughter is dating the PRINCE--"  "Mom p l e a s e."
If the party is bumping and lasts all night long, he finds out that there is only one room for all of the kids and teens. If this is his first time at one of your family's parties, your cousins will give him the bed. (Which means you get the bed too 😉.)
Gotta make a good first impression, especially since he's the prince.
But if this is his fifth or sixth time, screw good impressions. He's basically family now, so they will fight him for that bed.
A broken and bruised Noctis soon joins you and your pile of pillows and blankets on the floor.
Tumblr media
Every time he goes downstairs to get food or something, his name will miraculously pop up in your aunts' conversation.
"Oh, he's so shy! It's very cute!" one of them titters as they switch over to English so he understands. He blushes and runs back up the stairs.
Gossip galore.
Tumblr media
"Hey, are they talking about me—"  "Yes."
He plays with your little cousins by carrying them and warping to another corner of the room. A little line of baby cousins will appear by his feet.
All of the uncles and aunts who always ask you, "Do you have a boyfriend yet?" are stunned into silence when you bring Noctis, because they never believed you.
Tumblr media
Your older cousins and uncles will drag him into a game of late night poker. I have a headcanon that he's secretly amazing at poker (and he will cheat from time to time using that sneaky materializing ability of his). He swindles your uncles and older cousins out of all their money.
In the end he uses some of that money to buy the kids ice cream from the store down the street, and gives your mom the rest of it.
He leaves with two large bags of leftovers, one for him, and one for Regis.
Prompto:
His first obstacle is getting over that sea of shoes at the front door. He almost always trips over your cousins' Nike shoes or your aunts’ heels.
At his first Asian party, he's so shocked that there's so many people. He comes from a small family, and his parents are barely even around, so it's so weird to see this sea of people.
"So all of these people are your aunts and uncles??"  "I'm not quite sure tbh."
He gets ten times more "You're so skinny!" comments than Noctis. When he tells them that he likes to watch his weight, they will be like ? "What's there to lose???" The grandmothers will pat his stomach for that imaginary flab that they're looking for.
"Do you want to eat more?"  >>Says yes even though he wants to explode. It's all just so good!
Tumblr media
Your little cousins are already calling him Uncle Prommy.
Your drunk uncles drag him into karaoke. Even though he doesn't speak the language, he's a great singer and can mimic the pronunciation pretty well.
Blows everyone away because his voice doesn't suck???
It would probably end up like this (x)
He becomes part of your mom's "humble-brag." You don't have to suffer alone anymore.
"Oh, I didn't want her to date, but she told me that she loves him so much, so I couldn't say no! He's the prince's best friend and part of the Crownsguard, you know."
You, your cousins, and your siblings leave the party to walk to a boba place.
Prompto witnesses first-hand what a polite fight is like.
"No way, I'm paying! My mom already gave me the money to cover everyone!" "Come on, if I don't pay my mom is going to nag me again!" "Nice try! I have the card!" "No, no! Prompto, stop him!"
Prompto is kind of helpless in this situation, and he sees that the cashier is just waiting there as you and your cousins fight it out for the bill.
He decides that he should just go up and pay for everyone instead.
Your moms are going to kill you when they realize that the guest paid.
Tumblr media
Gladiolus:
Is easily the biggest person at the party.
You never have to ask around for him, because he towers over everyone.
Tumblr media
This is the first time a party didn't have any leftovers by the end, because Gladio eats it all.
“Gladio, I thought you said you were full.”  “Eh, I can go for another plate.”
Will be ready to fight your family if they say that cup noodles aren’t real food.
But gets a lot of other instant ramen recommendations from your cousins.
Gladio has  1) a nice car 2) money and 3) tattoos  so your ABG cousin will be on him like white on rice.
You will have to corner her when she is alone and say...
Tumblr media
At the end of the party he has at least ten plans to workout with your cousins.
He shares tattoo stories with your uncles.
If your cousins let it slip that you used to take martial arts as a kid to your teens, you will throttle them later, because Gladio will now drag you with him on his morning workouts.
Everyone is kinda intimidated by him at first, but then he shows what a softie he is and he basically becomes a family member.
Your uncles and cousins gather around to talk and drink with him, and it's the first time you snoop around, because they always talk about girls/picking up girls.
You're going to be listening to every word to make sure that your man is in line.
You find him the next morning, crashed on the couch with your male relatives sporting hangovers.
Ignis:
Forces you to go to the party early so the two of you can help your mom and your aunts cook.
Aka he helps them out while you sit on the couch in the living room and laze around on your phone.
Tumblr media
He's so tall, so your little cousins will hang off him.
Is overwhelmed by all of the new foods that he is eating.
You have to pause multiple times throughout your meal when he asks you what he's eating.
He comes up with a new recipeh every ten minutes, but is stopped by your grandma and aunt who will tell him how to make it authentically.
Shares recipes with the aunts all night long, with all of them fighting over who makes the better dish.
Tumblr media
More "He's so handsome!" comments than you can count.
Then then look at you all dumbfounded bc how did you manage to nab someone like him?
The aunts go to your female cousins and be like, "When you finally get a boyfriend, get someone like him."
Will try to learn everyone's name and how they're related to you. You have to be like
Tumblr media
because there's just so many people.
He speaks your language, so everyone stops in shock when he talks to them.
He's so polite and well-dressed that a rumor is passed around that he's going to propose to you that night.
You hear a passing comment that says that he chickened out last minute.
They still look at him disapprovingly sometimes when they learn that you two still aren’t engaged.
He has no problem finding his shoes at the end of the party, because he's the only one who would wear freaking designer loafers to the gathering.
It's also the only one that's neatly placed off to the side.
He's just lucky that it wasn't stolen.

Bis Vivit Que Bene Vivit
I figured it might be nice to post this here, as well. So, enjoy chapter one of my Vampire/Werewolf/Shifter FFXV Au Fic! Which you can also find here.  Boy that was a lot to write- WARNINGS: Mild gore is really all there is for this chapter tbh.
“Show me a hero, and I'll write you a tragedy.” ― F. Scott Fitzgerald
“Whattya mean, you didn’t get the shot?” Dino asks, turning away from the computer to study the blond who seemed to have gotten a sudden interest in the floor. Sighing, he ran a hand through his overly gelled hair, grimacing at the way it felt. Man, he needed to invest in a different type of gel. “Well- just hand the assignment over to one of the juniors, then. I gotta betta job for you to do!” With a flourish, he brought the bespectacled youth closer, forcing him to look at the headline in the newspaper.
‘United Once More: The Nox-Fleruet Coven Visits Insomnia’
Prompto frowned, pushing his glasses further up his nose before looking over at his boss curiously. “So… You want me to go… Take pictures? Of Vampires?” He asked, not exactly understanding why this was such a big deal. Sure, the Nox-Fleuret family was pretty big, pretty important to the West as far as a governing body went, but why was this so big? The sound of scoffing made him pout, not enjoying being obviously made fun of.
“Read more- see, here. It’s the first time that ol’ Princey’s gonna be out an’ about with the public! It’s his debut, blondie. Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum! Imagine how much we could make if we managed to get a good shot of him!” Dino spoke excitedly, releasing Prompto to walk over to the windows, staring out at the cityscape. “This is big, Prommy. This could be your debut as a photojournalist.” A smirk curled his lips, obvious in his voice as he looked over his shoulder. “Unless, you’d rather hand it off to-”
“I’ll do it!” Prompto exclaimed, knuckles whitening from his hold on his camera. To get close to the Prince… To royalty. It was a dream come true, really! “I’ll do it, don’t you worry! I’ll get the best pictures of them that you’ve ever seen, just you wait!” He sang, turning and all but skipping out of the room, cornflower blue hues sparkling in excitement and determination. He could do this. He WOULD do this! Even if it meant breaking some rules and maybe paying a guard or two off, he could and would do this.
The smell of fresh air greeted him as he stepped through the front doors of Insomnia Journals, the sound of traffic and people talking mingling. Fumbling, he pulled his earbuds free and quickly slipped them in, listening as the sound of acoustic guitar began to take over as he started his walk home. It always brought him past the heavily guarded Citadel- the center of Insomnia and where the Lucis-Caelum family lived, as well as where all the governing happened. Prompto had never been in there, but he’d taken plenty of photographs of the imposing building. Towering spirals, dark arches, the engraving of the Gods and the Fall of the Infernian engraved upon the front, over the doors. It was beautiful- and the interior was even more so, no doubt.
Today, however, a barrier was set up, cutting the roundabout in half and making a mess out of traffic. In front of the steps, three cars sat- gleaming white and pristine. There were more guards posted than usual, giving him pause as he joined in with the crowd. Whoever was in the vehicles was important, obviously- especially if it meant rerouting traffic. Raising his camera, he focused through the viewfinder, closing one eye as he began snapping away. The Glaive- that was what the guards were called. There were rumors that it was made up completely of werewolves. Which made sense to Prompto; the shifters were known to be physically stronger than a normal human- not as strong as vampires, of course, but still. He focused in on the one in front- a shorter man with dark hair buzzed on the sides, two braids on the left side of his head. There were little tattoos on his face; the corner of his eyes, one at his temple. But his eyes…
           Damn.
They were almost neon in color, a blue so vibrant they seemed fake. He made sure to capture a few shots before freezing in place as the Glaive’s gaze zeroed in on him. Swallowing thickly, he managed to take one last shot before a smirk was spreading across the man’s face. Oh. Oh, Gods. He was handsome, and dangerous, and maybe this was a bad idea. Lowering his camera, he shifted further back in the crowd, but the sensation of the man’s gaze on him never left. ‘There’s no way he can still see me, right?’ He asked himself, brushing a hand over the red beanie on his head, covering blond locks. Nah, there wasn’t any way. Not with this many people in the way.
           Then, cheers began.
Moving to the other side, he elbowed his way to the front, near the reporters as they spoke into their microphones. He listened in as he raised his camera, focusing in on the cars as their occupants began to file out. “-with channel six news! Here we have the Nox Fleuret family from the Realm of Tenebrae arriving! Sylva Nox Fleuret is exiting, looking stunning in a white pantsuit.” And stunning she did look- especially through the lens of his camera, Prompto snickered silently. “And there is Lady Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, her hair in a lovely long braid and dressed in a modest gown of silver, with Lady Gentiana following from her own car in a traditional gown of black and gold. Both women look wonderful.” Prompto waited, not wanting to get a shot of the Ladies with their backs to the crowd.
“And there is Lord Ravus Nox Fleuret, standing tall and regal in a suit of white and lilac, his hair tied back. Recently, news of his engagement to Miss Aurora Mane-Glorium broke- and there she is! Oh, look at that dress! Lilac, and how stunning it looks with her hair! Aurora Mane-Glorium comes from a modest Vampire clan native to Tenebrae. Her father served beneath Lady Sylva in her council before his untimely death in a horrid accident twelve years prior. You’ll remember when a radical terrorist group attacked Tenebrae, claiming wanting to put an end to the Nox-Fleuret line.” As she spoke, the group of five turned to face the crowd, flashing dazzling, fanged smiles. Thanks to the overcast nature of the day, none carried parasols with them, nor were there sunglasses covering their eyes.
Perfect. Tongue poking out between his lips, he quickly snapped a few shots before lowering his camera, a grin on his face. They all did look fantastic, he had to agree. Job done, he slipped away, shoving his way through the crowd to the edges, where he almost tripped. Catching himself in time, he looked up, only spot familiar black and red leathers. Or, at least, he thought he did. Once he blinked, they were gone, leaving a sinking sensation of disappointment in it’s wake. Of course it wasn’t them.
He hadn’t seen his brother or the Huntress in over three years now. Not after the last fight they’d had. It’d been a stupid argument over Loqi being a Hunter- too stupid, now that he thought on it. Stuffing his hands into his pockets, he pushed the thoughts away and instead focused on the agenda he had for the night. Go home, fix some dinner for himself and his Corgi, Insolo, and then go for an evening jog. The jogs helped clear his troubled mind- even if he sometimes pushed himself too far. It wasn’t his fault, really- he just enjoyed the runner’s high. The way his lungs burned with every breath, the feeling of blood rushing through his veins. It was addicting. A drug.
The farther he walked from the Citadel, the less polished the city became. Then again, it wasn’t all that shocking, considering how he lived in an apartment closer to the markets than the business district. But he couldn’t complain; hell, getting fresh produce and meats daily was worth living in a shoddy studio apartment. Besides, it wasn’t as if he’d get visitors often. Truth be told, he couldn’t exactly remember the last time he’d had someone over. His birthday, last year? Had it truly been that long?
Brows furrowing, he fumbled with his keys as a calico began to twine between his legs, meowing for attention. Cas- the apartment building’s local mice killer. The tension that had built up in his shoulders began to ease as he knelt down and offered a scratch under the chin for the feline. She was a sweetie, really; if he remembered to grab some fresh tuna from the market tomorrow, he’d leave some out for her. Gotta pay the work, right? Standing with a groan, he carefully pushed the cat aside so he could unlock the door. Slipping in, he was greeted with the sound of nails on hardwood and yipping.
“There’s my boy!” Prompto cooed, dropping down to his knees to allow the excited corgi to all but tackle him, covering him in kisses. Laughing, the photographer carefully maneuvered back to his feet, making his way into the kitchen. He’d managed to meal prep the night before, meaning he already had dinner prepared for himself. “I want to ride my chocobo, all day~” Singing, he poured Insolo some fresh kibble before reaching into the fridge, wincing at the sight of low supplies. Ouch. Market in the morning, definitely. But for right now, Chicken fajita with Leiden peppers. Heaven on earth!
Food sufficiently heated, he settled down at his table, scrolling through his social media feed. It was all about the Royals from Tenebrae visiting; what they were wearing, the latest fashion trends that are going to start because of it, the prediction of who will end up with who. Rolling his eyes, he set his phone aside and focused on his food, mind drifting back to the mirage he must have seen earlier. That was the only explanation, right? Loqi would have… Would have let him know if he had come back. They were brothers, after all. Memories of their parting floated to the forefront of his mind.
“Look, you don’t have to do this. We can… We can figure this out!” Prompto pleaded, watching as Loqi packed up his bags, shoulders tense. “No one has to know where we’re from, Lo. Come on… We can pay that guy off!”
“No, we can’t. I can’t. I won’t stay here where we can be persecuted for who our father is, Prompto. I refuse.” Loqi replied tersely, turning to study his younger brother with troubled eyes. “Come with me. Aranea’s already got a place we can stay. You can… Stay there while we go out and do hunts.”
“I can’t leave! I just got this job at the papers, and… And I don’t want to go. This is home, Loqi-”
“It isn’t my home.” He snarled, shaking his head as he stuffed his feet into his shoes. “Stay here, then. Rot. I don’t care.”
“You’re just leaving because of that guy- Cor. That’s why! You’re heartbroken because he chose duty over you!” Prompto shouted, but the moment the words slipped out, he regretted them, a hand slapping over his mouth as tears welled up.
Loqi studied his brother for a moment before turning on his heel and marching out of their shared apartment. He paused for a moment, knuckles white from gripping the door jam. “Take care of yourself, Prompto. Stay away from the blood suckers and shifters.”
It took far too long for him to move, his limbs leaden. Lurching to his feet, he nearly tripped as he ran to the door, throwing it open only to see Loqi sliding into a car. “Loqi- LOQI, PLEASE.” He sobbed, sliding to the floor as tears trickled down his cheeks. Damn it.
           He was alone.
Shaking his head, Prompto forced the lump in his throat away as he finished cleaning up his dishes. It was still light enough outside- he could manage a quick run. Yeah. Changing quickly, he made sure the running leggings were on right before pulling on a yellow hoodie, earbuds secured in his ears and phone in his pocket. The sound of heavy bass began to trickle from the speakers as he set out, locking his door behind him. Down the stairs, out the gate, and onto the sidewalk. It was Thursday, meaning the streets weren’t as busy as they could have been. Perfect for running.
Feet slapping against concrete, he wove his way out of the market district, away from the business district, leading down to the riverside. Street lamps were spaced out, leaving dark gaps between each burst of light, but he knew his way around. At least, he liked to think he did. Breathe in, right foot hit, breathe out, right foot hit. Every two steps, he’d breathe. Nice, deep, and even. He’d worked damn hard for this physique- the marks on his stomach and hips told the story- and he’d be damned if he let it fall out of shape! Slowing, he checked his pulse rate and then the time, eyes widening as he realized he’d already been running for over twenty minutes.
The sky had darkened, the stars peeking out. Of course, you couldn’t see them in the city- the lights blocked them out. Turning around, he jogged instead of running, letting himself cool down. Man, the park was emptier than usual. How… Weird. Maybe it was because of the cooling weather? That had to be it.
Until the sound of a scream had him freezing in his tracks.
Yanking out his earbuds, he turned around quickly, hands tightening into fists. He may have looked small, but he’d been taught how to fight. He even was part of a dojo at one point! But that didn’t mean that the sweat on his skin chilled him to the bone, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. “Who’s there?” He called out, wincing as his voice cracked. No answer. No sound at all. It was as if all life had been suddenly sucked free from the park. Breath quickening, he turned and took off in a run, listening as his feet hit the concrete rapidly. Then-
           There.
The sound of a second pair of footsteps. Eyes widening, he didn’t bother risking a look over his shoulder, instead leaning forward as he forced himself to run faster. Come on, legs, work! Work, damn it! Wait- no, no- fuck. Fuck, he was falling and when had he left the path? Shit. Blue hues widening in pain and fear, he quickly rolled over, bracing himself for an attack that never came. He was alone…
What the hell? Had he imagined it all? Shaking his head, he pushed himself up, wincing at the twinge in his ankle. Twisted, not sprained- hopefully. His hands throbbed, scrapped to hell and back and bleeding. Ouch. Shaking his head, he brushed himself off, sparing a glance around. The woods in the center of the park. In the day-time they were nice, but now? It sent a chill through him to even be in here. Muffling a whimper as he began to make his way out, he was too focused to feel the gaze of a predator upon his back.
But he felt it the moment claws ripped across his back, prompting for a scream to escape him. Gods, that hurt! Nails clawing at the earth, he tried to pull himself away- but the creature…
           Wolf.
A wolf was hovering over him, all solid brown fur and hulking and far too large to be considered normal and oh gods, this was a werewolf. Oh gods, he was going to die. A whimper spilled free as he curled in on himself, flight taking over the urge to fight. The creature- his forearms were more humanoid than his hind legs, he noticed, standing straighter, it’s jaw opening. And opening. And opening. A terrified squeal peeled free as he tried to force himself backwards, only to hiss in pain as fire crawled up his back. Row upon row of gleaming, bloodied teeth shone in the moonlight, and his head was spinning or was that the werewolf hovering over him?
And then it was rolling away in a flurry of growls and yelps and pale skin. Wait, skin? He struggled to focus, watching as more and more people showed up suddenly. What? His head lolled over, unsteady gaze falling on a woman’s face. Wow, she was pretty- wait, why was she smiling? Had he said that out loud? She looked like Lady Lunafreya… But that was impossible, she was at the Citadel! She opened her mouth to say something, but it was all… Watered down. Like he was under water.
And then, the light disappeared and he was left in shadows.
Sunlight filtered in, making everything seem red behind his eyelids. But man, the bed he was in was far too comfortable to be his own, and the hand in his hair was so nice… Wait, what?
Eyes cracking open, he winced at how bright it was. It took a few moments for his sight to adjust, and when it did- oh, boy. This bedroom was the size of his entire apartment, plus some. The ceiling was high, painted ivory and with stark black lining. And the hand in his hair… Turning his head, his gaze trailed up the delicate, pale arm, up, up to long brown hair and a delicate face with emerald hues studying him curiously, set in a face that rivaled a porcelain doll’s. Brows furrowing, he opened his mouth to speak, but no words escaped.
“Ravus, love, he’s awake.” She spoke, voice lilting with the accent that was native to Tenebrae. It was musical to hear, really- wait. Ravus? As in, Prince Ravus Nox Fleuret? Turning his head quickly, he took in the sight of the man sitting beside him, long silver hair that he’d normally seen tied back in interviews and photographs loose around his face. It was long- really long, falling past his shoulders. And pretty.
“Thank you, it takes a lot to manage it.” Oh, he’d spoken aloud again, hadn’t he? “Yes, you did. I’ll go retrieve Regis and Noctis- stay with him, Aurora.” Oh his voice was nice- low and soft and rumbly and Prompto found that he would be content to listen to it for hours on end. A giggle sounded to his left, making his gaze fall onto the woman, Aurora, once more. She wasn’t as dressed up as she was the day-days?- before, wearing a crème colored sweater and a pair of black leggings. Comfy.
“Do you need a drink? I have water here…” She spoke softly, removing her hand only for Prompto to whine at the loss. “Oh-… Oh, well, alright.” She replaced her hand with a soft laugh, head tilting as she studied him. “I wasn’t there- but Noctis says it was bad. Do you remember what happened?” Aurora asked, pink lips turning into a pensive frown. He went to answer, but the door opened, and the air in the room seemed to drop a few degrees.
“Well, this is certainly interesting. You’ve caused quite the stir, Prompto Argentum,” came a smooth voice that made Prompto think of velvet, and his gaze landed on the group that had entered. Specifically, the man who wore a suit of black, whose hair was just starting to grey and whose eyes held the color of blood. His breath caught in his throat as he realized who he was staring at.
Regis Lucis Caelum, patriarch of the Lucis Caelum Dynasty, oldest living Vampire in all of Lucis.
