#I just tend to lean more towards female characters than male
quikyu · 1 month
Note
Hey listen I'm loving the comic so far, but since Terapagos canonically is male what made you turn him female?
I designed most of my DLC-related characters back in August, before either dlc came out. I got lucky with my Ogerpon character being female, but my Terapagos just happens to be off the mark a little XD
I guess the real question then would be “why didn’t you switch the gender?” And the answer for that would be I love her high pony-tail too much 🥺

Seeing fan discussions about Blue Eye Samurai and especially Mizu's identity is so annoying sometimes. So let me just talk about it real quick.
First off, I have to emphasise that different interpretations of the text are always important when discussing fiction. That's how the whole branch of literary studies came to be, and what literary criticism and analysis is all about: people would each have their own interpretation of what the text is saying, each person applying a different lens or theory through which to approach the text (ie. queer theory, feminist theory, reader response theory, postcolonial theory, etc) when analysing it. And while yes, you can just take everything the authors say as gospel, strictly doing so would leave little room for further analysis and subjective interpretation, and both of these are absolutely necessary when having any meaningful discussion about a piece of media.
With that being said, when discussing Blue Eye Samurai, and Mizu's character in particular, I always see people only ever interpret her through a queer lens. Because when discussing themes of identity, yes, a queer reading can definitely apply, and in Mizu's story, queer themes are definitely present. Mizu has to hide her body and do her best to pass in a cisheteronormative society; she presents as a man 99% of the time and is shown to be more comfortable in men's spaces (sword-fighting) than in female spaces (homemaking). Thus, there's nothing wrong with a queer reading at all. Hell, some queer theorists interpret Jo March from Little Women as transmasc and that's totally valid, because like all analyses, they are subjective and argumentative; you have the choice to agree with an interpretation or you can oppose it and form your own.
To that end, I know many are equally adamant that Mizu is strictly a woman, and that's also also a completely valid reading of the text, and aligns with the canon "Word of God", as the creators' intention was to make her a woman. And certainly, feminist themes in the show are undeniably present and greatly colour the narrative, and Episode 4 & 5 are the clearest demonstrations of this: Mizu's protectiveness of Madame Kaji and her girls, Mizu's trauma after killing Kinuyo, her line to Akemi about how little options women have in life, and the way her husband had scorned her for being more capable than him in battle.
I myself personally fall into the camp of Mizu leaning towards womanhood, so i tend to prefer to use she/her pronouns for her, though I don't think she's strictly a cis woman, so I do still interpret her under the non-binary umbrella. But that's besides my point.
My gripe here, and the thing that spurred me to write this post, is that rarely does this fandom even touch upon the more predominant themes of colonialism and postcolonial identities within the story. So it definitely irks me when people say that the show presenting Mizu being cishet is "boring." While it's completely fine to have your opinion and to want queer rep, a statement like that just feels dismissive of the rest of the representation that the show has to offer. And it's frustrating because I know why this is a prevalent sentiment; because fandom culture is usually very white, so of course a majority of the fandom places greater value on a queer narrative (that aligns only with Western ideas of queerness) over a postcolonial, non-Western narrative.
And that relates to how, I feel, people tend to forget, or perhaps just downplay, that the crux of Mizu's internal conflict and her struggle to survive is due to her being mixed-race.
Because while she can blend in rather seamlessly into male society by binding and dressing in men's clothing and lowering her voice and being the best goddamn swordsman there is, she cannot hide her blue eyes. Even with her glasses, you can still see the colour of her eyes from her side profile, and her glasses are constantly thrown off her face in battle. Her blue eyes are the central point to her marginalisation and Otherness within a hegemonic society. It's why everyone calls her ugly or a monster or a demon or deformed; just because she looks different. She is both white and Japanese but accepted in neither societies. Her deepest hatred of herself stems primarily from this hybridised and alienated identity. It's the whole reason why she's so intent on revenge and started learning the way of the sword in the first place; not to fit in better as a man, but to kill the white men who made her this way. These things are intrinsic to her character and to her arc.
Thus, to refuse to engage with these themes and dismiss the importance of how the representation of her racial Otherness speaks to themes of colonialism and racial oppression just feels tone-deaf to the show's message. Because even if Mizu is a cishet woman in canon, that doesn't make her story any less important, because while you as a white queer person living in the West may feel unrepresented, it is still giving a voice to the stories of people of colour, mixed-race folks, and the myriad of marginalised racial/ethnic/cultural groups in non-Western societies.

Asking here because you are a relatively established author within this community, and I'm curious what you + others think but don't want to spam multiple authors' inboxes with this question. Additionally, this isn't bait, just a genuine question I've been ruminating over for some time now. As an author, do you feel female/non-binary ROs get less positive attention than male ROs? Do you feel they're more likely to be ignored outright by readers or even receive more vitriolic hate? To be clear, this includes gender-selectable ROs, where their female/non-binary versions get ignored/more hate than their male versions. I put female ROs/non-binary ROs in the same category here even though they're different genders because I'm mostly curious as to whether or not you think there's positive male bias in the readership of the IF community. I ask because, as a long-term reader and community member, I've noticed consistently that male ROs are favored by fellow readers. Overall, male ROs get more asks, more positive asks, and thus more attention from authors. I've seen a repeating pattern where readers will default to using the author's set male pronouns for a gender selectable RO when sending in an ask, even if the ask isn't related to the male version of that RO.
On the flip side, it seems like female characters are way more likely to be ignored (asks are simply not sent in about them) or downright hated. I've seen truly vitriolic hate sent in about female ROs to IF authors like I've never seen for male ROs, or at least on the same scale. That's not even *touching* the absolute disrespect and transphobia I've seen towards non-binary characters before, such as Clementine from The Northern Passage (I mention that character as a specific example here- but I don't want to bring this discussion to that author's doorstep because I've noted a particularly high number of bad-faith individuals tend to harass them). This pattern exists for fanart, too- especially for gender selectable ROs, the male version seems to exist as a "default" for many fan artists.
I bring this lengthy ask to you, instead of making my own post, because I was curious to get an author's perspective on this. As a reader it's a repeated pattern I've noticed time and time again, especially the bigger IFs get, but I was wondering if a 'behind the scenes' perspective might have anything else to add.
Feel free to ignore this if you'd like! Overall I am just curious as to whether or not other people see this pattern.
No, I think you're absolutely correct in this. I definitely think that there is something of a bias within the IF community that leans towards Male / Masc Presenting ROs. But this of course is speaking purely from my own perspective of working on my own IFs and playing a handful of others.
Speaking from Larkin's perspective--it's no secret that my male characters get a lot more attention from readers than any of my female or nb characters. But, the thing here is, I think, even in traditional media, (movies, books, video-games) that's also something of a trend, so while it's disheartening and disappointing, it's unfortunately, not surprising.
I do certainly agree that there is a lot of issues within the IF community concerning how characters with marginalized identies are treated. (whether that be through misgendering in conversation, white-washing or the plethora of downright vitriol and hatred spewed at characters and authors alike.) These are all issues that I've taken notice of just as someone who's experience within this community has been relatively tame compared to some of my fellow authors.
But as someone who's both white and cis gendered I don't really think that it's appropriate for me to wax-poetic about the issues faced in the community by people who identify otherwise, especially when we're a community filled with plenty of talented and diverse creators who can all speak on this better than I can.
What I can speak on however is my experience as a queer female author, writing queer female characters. When I started writing my games I wrote them primarily from a perspective of wanting to write a game that A) I'd want to play and B) one that had things that I saw were lacking in other games. Whether that be through mechanics, relationship dynamics and characters.
While it isn't explicitly clear just yet because of the point in development I'm at, I write my female love interests from a more saphhic perspective with female and non-binary identifying main characters in mind. It's something that I've slowly come to realize throughout the process of working on my project, as I've come to terms with my own identity. Rose, Celina, NB! Ace, and F! Hollis (and a few other characters that have yet to be introduced properly but identify with the labels of female or non-binary) are all characters that I hold near and dear to my heart, and have all helped me realize things about myself as I'm writing. So while I love all of my characters equally, it is, like I mentioned, a little sad to see the male characters favored--but not something that I wasn't expecting going into writing my game.
Thank you for sending me in this ask and sharing your thoughts and indulging me in mine!

I have a NSFW ask, would Sephiroth be dominant or submissive (his partner can be either male or female) on one hand people in positions of power and high stress tend to prefer being submissive so they can feel like they are not in control for a bit but then again everything in his life is always controlled and his choices are limited heavily by Shinra so he may feel like being submissive may just be another form of control and would prefer being dominant to feel some sort of autonomy. Or maybe he is super vanilla or doesn't know anything about sex lol what do you think?
I don't usually do NSFW asks, but I'll give you some non-graphic tidbits.
Sephiroth is a switch, with occasional leanings towards submissive depending on the person. For all his confidence and charisma, he's actually rather inexperienced in both emotional and physical aspects within a relationship and often needs to be guided and prompted in order to discover what he likes.
My version of Seph is also homosexual and is only interested in men. With characters like Cloud, he'd prefer the dominant role. With Zack, submissive. And with Genesis, they'd take turns depending on their general mood or situation.
Sephiroth needs a sense of security in his relationship to feel truly comfortable, otherwise he would force himself to avoid relationships altogether, convinced he'd hurt them or irreparably damage them forever. He has a mild praise kink, and a general appetite for body worship. He is a surprisingly affectionate lover for the most part, though he can occasionally push people away if he feels awkward or out of his element. Once he's been with someone for a long time, he has a lot more talent, but only because he's come to feel completely safe and comfortable in their presence.
Sephiroth generally does not like to be touched due to the horrific trials he endured at Shinra's hand growing up. He might take on the more dominant role in order to slowly acclimate himself into being more physical with his partner, as well as to build a sense of trust. Trust is extremely important to him, as it helps him not feel so "other" around them. Once he's comfortable, he often allows them some semblance of "control" over him, but only in knowing that it's by his own will.
I typically don't really see him as being the crazy sex god most of the fandom portrays him to be. Sephiroth lives a very lonely, very unhappy life and his relationships, while strong, are also very strained. So I'd actually imagine him to be very inexperienced and more than often pretending to know what he's doing. While he's in complete control on the battlefield, the man is at war with his own body and desires, unable to properly assess how to go about the complicated inner workings of intimate relationships, often to his own detriment.

Multifandom and Fandomless search -- always open!
I'm an adv-lit to novella writer, searching for dedicated partners eager to explore whatever little universe we create together. I do have a few expectations when it comes to my partners, but the most important to me is communication. I love to make friends with the people I write with, and I honestly find that without a level of open communication, I tend to lose interest. So, if you're someone who enjoys sharing mood boards, playlists, memes, art or just simply gushing about your interest, I'm all ears. Other than that, please be above the age of 18.
Fandoms I'd love to explore:
Baldur's Gate 3 (Astarion, Gale)
Dead by Daylight (Ghostface, Wesker)
Hannibal (Will)
Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt (Yennefer, Regis)
Resident Evil (Any)
Scream/Halloween/ Saw + other Horror movies
I only do canon x canon for fandom roleplays, and my muses vary though I'm always open to writing the characters I've mentioned above. I can also write others, and always willing to learn new ones. For ships, I'm honestly down for anything. I love everything from the most beloved ships to the rarest rarepair of them all!
Fandomless wordbank:
serial killers, mutual obsessions, codependency, possessiveness, historical, vampires, demons, religion, cults, witches, shared trauma, secret relationships, forbidden romance, forced proximity, murder mystery, fantasy, denial of feelings, unhealthy coping mechanisms, addiction, mutual pining, victorian, generational trauma, wealthy families, anything inspired by ASOIAF.
I can write both male and female characters. I really do not have a preference. I do tend to lean more toward m// or f// but I'm also open to other pairings. NSFW themes are welcome, including smut and typical dead dove themes. I don't really have any triggers, but we can discuss that privately.
Please reach out to me if any of this sounds interesting. Or interact with this post, and I'll reach out to you.

Mass Effect Questionnaire
Tumblr media
I saw @littleneonlily do this, so I figured I'd give it a shot, too, while I still have Mass Effect on the brain. 1. Tie between Garrus, Wrex, and Liara
2. Mordin, Samara, Zaeed, and Garrus again
3. Liara again, Kaidan, and Garrus...again
4. The M-76 Revenant. Who doesn't love a non-stop barrage of death?
5. Still like the Revenant, but if you want me to pick something else, I'll do the N7 Crusader
6. Soldier. Go ahead, call me bland, but I think it best fits both the gameplay and the story. Though I do also like the Vanguard and Sentinel classes.
7. Noveria in Mass Effect 1. I dunno why, but I just love the atmosphere this planet has, both setting and story wise.
8. Tying in with the above, the entirety of Noveria's arc, for the same reasons, with Bringing Down the Sky right behind it.
9. The Suicide Mission itself, which is my favorite level in all of gaming. Runner-ups would have to include Garrus's Recruitment, Tali and Grunt's Loyalty Missions, and the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC.
10. It's gonna be a tie between Priority Rannoch and Tuchanka. And the entirety of the Citadel DLC, too.
11. Depends. With Male Shepard, I like to pair him with Kaidan (shameless Mshenko fan here). With Female Shepard, I like to romance Liara. For Runner ups, I'd do Garrus and Tali (hetero normies)
12. I kinda wish James Vega was a romance option, preferably Bi, because I love my himbos. Other than that, I'd love to see some bisexual romance options from currently romanceable companions, such as Garrus, Tali, Thane, and Miranda.
13. Mako. Both control like ass, but at least the Mako isn't made of wet tissue paper.
14. Oh boy, you guys are gonna hate me for this one, but to me...it's Tali. Look, I don't hate her at all. In fact, she's pretty good, but HOLY SHIT, some of her fans are zealous.
15. I dunno how the rest of the fandom sees them, but I do really like Samantha Traynor and Steve Cortez. For side characters, they're really well written, both character and romance wise.
16. Haven't played Multiplayer in ages.
17. Refer to above, though I do recall liking the Earth maps.
18. I'd say SR-2. If you wanna be more specific, I like the version of it in ME3.
19. Destroy all the way...and maybe control. I know, E.D.I. and the Geth won't survive, but it's not like folks are just gonna forget how to rebuild synthetics (unless you're a moron who gets everyone killed). Control is a decent runner up if you wanna spare the robots. Synthesis is bullshit space magic (seriously, what the fuck even happens in Synthesis?). And Refusal is just...dumb.
20. I tend to lean more towards Paragon. Granted, I do make some Renegade Choices here and there, either for the sake of pragmatism or sheer amusement, but generally, the Shepards I play will lean a bit more on the Paragon side.
Not tagging anyone this time, since IDK how many of my mutuals are Mass Effect Fans, but feel free to give it a shot.

Submissive Yanderes
I've been reblogging a lot of submissive yandere prompts and trying to indoctrinate people so I thought it might be a good time to write about a topic like this. Despite the title of this analysis, I won't actually be focusing on anything of a sexual nature, but rather the placement or role of a submissive yandere. In my opinion just like you can write any character into a yandere, you can also make any character dominant or submissive. Plus, I think there are some misconceptions of what is considered a submissive character versus one that is more dominant, so I'll try to explain my thoughts on it.
First thing’s first, let’s discuss what exactly it means to be submissive in a dynamic. In my opinion, submissiveness is defined by a power dynamic of sorts, where the submissive party is under the more dominant one. It can be done in a lot of ways, whether it be willfully or forcefully, in a position of power (like a CEO and their workers) or a general personality thing ( one who makes all the decisions for another). It sort of depends on the dynamic since even positions don’t guarantee that a character is more submissive ( for instance a worker blackmailing the CEO would put the worker in a high let reign of power), in my mind it’s more of who has the most control in a dynamic.
Dominant yanderes are much more prevalent in terms of the types of yanderes I see likely because many of the people who are into yanderes are more on the submissive side (at least from what I see, and this includes those into female yanderes). It makes sense as well because yanderes generally incorporate both horror which often has the yandere as a type of force of nature going against the s/o. More dangerous elements also lend them to become more dominant in nature as many of them can be violent. I find that there are a lot more male yanderes that are depicted as more dominant than their female counterparts, probably for reasons of preference as well as just probably some sort of double standard thing that we will not go into. Yanderes do also contribute to a lot of villain style characters in stories as well, and they often have to be at least toe to toe with the hero or overwhelm them for the story to work, pushing them more onto a dominant trait. Even for a lot of romantic stories, yanderes are much more persistent compared to their lover  as well as their general perchance to do anything for their lover tends to lean more towards the dominant traits.
Submissive yanderes are usually rare probably for a lot of different factors. For one, yanderes are usually in the camp of horror, which often involves something that inspires fear or loss of control, of which dominant yanderes will tend to dominate, since it gives more of the sense of those two factors. With submissive yanderes, it’s much more rare to have this unless it’s for instance a dramatic irony where the submissive yandere slowly becomes more psychotic or if it’s used to as well to elicit empathy. That’s not to say it isn’t possible of course, it’s just not as common. In addition a lot of fans of the yandere genre tend to be more on the submissive side ( this includes those who are fans of female or other genders of yanderes), so having a more dominant yandere will tend to cater to their fantasies more. Again, it’s not everyone, it’s just what I see is more common. Submissive yanderes are more often found in works where there’s more romance involved or if the yandere and their love interest are in more equal ground. They might also appear in tragedies for instance especially if they realize what they’ve done or they’ve done something that they can’t take back or in comedies (especially if the yandere is also a masochist like in Shinobi Shijuusou) since usually they are more harmless or their actions aren’t taken as seriously. An example of this might be like Hana Wa Knife O Mi Ni Matou, where the yandere really only goes haywire when the female character is hurt or killed.
While just as all yanderes can be dominant or submissive, a lot of submissive yanderes tend to fall into certain types. Clingy yanderes, for instance tend to be more submissive since they are generally afraid of having their s/o leave them and use more emotional manipulation to get them to stay, in the sense of making the s/o feel guilt or responsibility over them, and often are depicted as cute and like a younger sibling (such as Trick or Kiss). Similarly desperate yanderes are in the same boat, though their actions often can turn violent if their s/o neglects them too much. Self harming yanderes are usually submissive since they don’t pose any harm to anyone but themselves and pose more of a guilt trip and emotional manipulation rather than attempting to hurt the s/o, and the readers may also gain an attachment to them if they have a more sympathetic side to them. Copycat and Replacement yanderes can be like this to a degree where copycats will attempt to become the type that the s/o likes ( think Ren from 14 Days With You or John Doe from John Doe + ) which is more heavily reliant on what the s/o likes and will change their appearance, mannerisms etc to gain favorability. Replacement yanderes can also come to a similar degree, though because they are often delusional, if they come to realize that their s/o isn’t similar to what was projected on them then things can go down fast (possibly like Yoosung for instance). Finally there’s overprotective yanderes which tend to lean either into more submissive or dominant depending on how they are written, though they can be depicted as more submissive if they tend to be more like worrywarts and are generally less forceful. Again you can theoretically write most yandere types into being more submissive, for instance a doll maker yandere that fears that the s/o hates them for what they’ve done or a extremely violent yandere that beings body parts for their lover in exchange for headpats or a manipulative yandere that plans everything just so he can kneel next to his love.
While submissive yanderes are often willing to be in a more submissive position, they don’t always have to be. A lot of times yanderes can be forced into this position and have to find ways to work around the lack of power that they have. For instance, a yandere who is thrown into jail and has to fight his way up the chain just so the guard they love so much will acknowledge them or a yandere that is forced as a slave that has to use back handed tactics to trap their lover who is the ruler of the palace. A s/o that is able to trap their yandere in a cafe instead of them and now the yanderes must suffer the consequences of what they’ve done the list goes on and on. I think these concepts are interesting since it forces the yandere in a powerless state and have to fight their way to the top to redeem themselves and you can see some of these types of stories with Beast tamed by the Villainess or in I Lost the Leash of the Yandere Male Lead . It can also work as a sort of revenge fantasy in which the s/o has a stronger advantage over the yandere who had bullied them all those years before. I think that yanderes can also willingly accept themselves in a lower position just to turn on their s/o as well, like an advisor yandere to their leader lover who slowly cause the decimation of everyone around them so they can be with their lover alone or a yandere who is a simple farmer that causes trouble for those in the village so the knight s/o will come to see them. Even if they aren’t going against their s/o they can still be quite a force, like pretending to be the right hand man for the enemy only to double cross them for the sake of their love on the other side, or a yandere that uses their s/o as more of a figure head as they run for a seat of power only to have the yandere, their right hand man, really influence most of the decisions they makes for the sake of making the s/o happy on the future. Yanderes that cause situations where the s/o has to save them so the s/o develops confidence in their lives, or yanderes that purposefully pretend to be bad at everything so that their s/o can’t keep their eyes off them for a second. I think a lot of submissive yandere ideas are overlooked because it makes them seem weak,(and perhaps because it’s not part of the power fantasy) but I think that they can have a lot of different ideas that can come out of it.
In terms of romance, I think a submissive yandere is very good for developing a relationship or having something that the yandere has to overcome. For instance a really meek yandere is caught by their bully s/o who teaches them to fight because they’re so wimpy. A submissive yandere that is able to empathize with their lover because they know how hard it is to be stepped on their entire lives and wants their s/o to stand up for themselves. A submissive yandere that is completely okay with being the side character so as long as their lover is being happy and by their side. A more bratty yandere that attempts to gain the attention of their s/o but has to learn to give affection more directly. I think also a submissive yandere tends to have a more equal footing with their s/o if they are dating, since while they still might follow most of what their lover says, they still want to make sure that their lover is happy and might have to go out of their way to push them in the right direction. I’m not saying you can’t do this with a more dominant or even more switchy yandere, I just think that there’s a lot of applications to submissive yanderes in romance.
Submissive yanderes are more of a staple in a lot of comedic stories, especially if on top of that they are more masochistic. While it’s completely fine to have that, I do find the general dynamic of their relationship is that the yandere is happy when they are hit and the s/o is annoyed or disgusted by it, which does get a bit boring after a while. It would be nice to see a sadistic s/o who periodically comes over to punish the submissive yandere in increasingly weird ways or a submissive s/o who comes to hurt the submissive yandere in hopes that they will hurt them back. It would be nice to see a s/o who seems nonchalant about their yandere being happy on getting hit and maybe even gets worried that the yandere is getting hurt so often because of them. Overall I hope to see different dynamics when it comes to submissive yanderes and their lovers in comedy rather than the same dynamics I normally see.
All in all I think submissive yanderes can be really interesting way to write a character. Even putting aside my bias for more submissive yanderes, I do think that they have a lot of applications that I normally don’t see with a lot of dominant yanderes, such as a more underdog status or a hidden yandere villain working in the shadows. With my bias for submissive yanderes, I think it’s nice to have a more cute yandere that’s easier to control in stories, since it puts the power on the s/o and how they choose to use the yandere. Overall, I think submissive yanderes, as rare as they are, should have more appearances to show off that kind of value they have in a story.

so there’s the obvious angle of bl as primarily a genre directed to an audience of straight women and the imposition of heterosexist schemas/narratives as a natural consequence of that context (possibly consciously but mostly subconsciously), but another angle I’ve been toying around with is the idea of some of the standard semi-miserable dynamics/tropes as—on a metanarrative level—some shade of psychosexual revenge fantasy. I’m going to sound insane for a second
caveat that this language is gonna be very binary because I’m going by really broad categories and also I’m gonna basically be talking about porn so like, nsfw text. also this is specifically about manga, romance novels/webnovels are its own category and I don’t know shit about videos.
anyway, something that’s kind of interesting is the broad dynamics of straight smut for straight men have a somewhat equal level of pleasure for male and female characters (excluding subtypes that are explicitly dub/noncon-focused). meanwhile, straight smut for straight women has a significant emphasis on sex being more pleasurable for the ‘top’ and more taxing for the ‘bottom’; there’s a split between the romantic fantasy of ‘being prioritized and everything feeling amazing’ vs ‘wild passionate affair that tends to lean into dubcon dynamics’ (because of the complicated relationship a vast majority of women have with sexuality and therefore part of the romantic fantasy involves some kind of force involved) (yknow bodice rippers etc). I feel like the split is still pretty heavily skewed towards the latter rather than the former. anyway, other than the ‘romantic fantasy’ element, it’s somewhat interesting to consider the broad dynamics of m/f smut for straight men vs straight women in terms of: yeah there’s a lot of women that talk about unsatisfying sexual encounters with men and not having a partner that was aware of her needs. so on a different level, these two different romantic fantasies for these two different audiences kind of mirror the… collective cultural experience, to some extent.
to go into pretty baseless psychoanalytical speculation, that’s why I think one element of bl dynamics is some subconscious/subtextual revenge by having a male character in the ‘bottom’ role—this has him play out the role of a ‘woman’. (not in a specifically homophobic way, although a heterosexist society is inherently homophobic). like I think readers get some kind of satisfaction seeing sex suck for men in a way it sucks for women (narratively and culturally). I don’t think it’s necessarily the main reason, but I feel like it contextualizes some audience engagement. and it’s been really interesting to see the shift in genre over the years, as society has become… marginally less homophobic, and there has been an increase of bl written to be more mindful/complex about incorporating ‘Gay People Exist In The Real World And Not Just As A Narrative Proxy’ (the yaoi -> bl transition, though it’s impossible to fully separate them as distinct categories). actually that reminds me, akiko mizoguchi has a thesis in english I’ve been meaning to read—there was an actual for real museum exhibit in japan about BL that was really thorough and I think mizoguchi wrote a full ass book but it’s only in japanese 😔 I think there was data from someone who’s been cataloguing statistic on every ship that shows up in doujin events or something crazy like that? goddamn. anyway this also doesn’t incorporate bl as a genre that initially had primarily queer women as creators but that’s out of scope and actually I forgot where I was going with this and I wanna go do something else now bye

Process Breakdown
hypnoticpresence
It's not boring to me. I may not be writing professionally, but I still enjoy hearing about the creative process. Please consider me a vote for more of a breakdown and thank you so much for sharing what you have.
Well let's see...
Today I was working on a post for the Nerdy Girl Next Door set. And I got permission from @sweetn0vato use her photos last month. I just haven't gotten around to using any yet. She has a great, cute, girl next door look and wears glasses. Which, is pretty stereotypical but sells "nerdy girl" pretty well.
So I figured I should find one of her photos that would work. Usually choosing a photo is a lot broader job, I've got a "Gallery" of potential shots set up with 30 of so images per page, somewhat loosely sorted. So I can tab through them and try to find something that jumps out at me with a good idea. In this case the gallery is a lot smaller. @sweetn0va is very hot, but most of the things she posts are gifs or videos, and quite lower resolution. There's not a whole lot of photos that will work.
Tumblr media
Here's what I found parsing through her media. Made some notes for your guys sake with my thoughts. I wasn't sure what kind of post I wanted to make, aside from the general theme. Go with a blank look, her being programmed over a facetime call? I like the outdoor shot, she looks gorgeous, but I don't think it really sells the mind control angle well. I could try and shoehorn it in... But there are better options.
In the end I opted for the "schoolgirl" outfit. I felt it leaned into the "girl next door" fantasy best. For a different theme I probably would have picked the one above it, or the top left if I wanted a blank look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next step is setting up the page, applying a watermark, and making some word bubbles. I usually get them started, then apply some styles I have pre-configured for different character "tones". I'm sure it's obvious, but I tend towards a default of blue and green. Blue being for the "male" voice, and green being female. I also make heavy use of pink when there's more than 1 female, or when it's a clearly ditzy/bimbo voice. It's a blatant sexist stereotype, but I find it's a good way to quickly communicate more about the scene without having to "Say" it.
Once the styles are applied I re-arrange and resize the bubbles to fit, and start really "Writing". Usually I have only the general outline of where I want the scene to go. Where it starts, where it ends, maybe a beat or two in the middle if a good line pops into my head, but mostly I just write a line and then move on to the next one. I very often find that the dialogue just doesn't flow in the direction that I wanted it to, and have to make adjustments to the intended "Story".
Probably less than half actually end where I originally intended. The rest change on me as the characters voices develop on the page, and they take a different direction. This one changed a fair bit on me, as I'd intended one idea, but instead it drifted into sort of a trigger play direction.
Anyway. This page is now finished, but not published on the discord yet. I sent it to @sweetn0va for final approval, before showing it to anyone else ;). If you want to see it before it makes it to the tumblr (at current page that will be about... 3 months) you know where to sign up for the Patreon ;)

♫: Is there any kind of muse, you cannot play?
Munday-questions |still accepting|
Tumblr media
I would probably say maybe female muses since all of the muses that I do have on my blog are actually all male. I tend to write male characters more than anything else, I'm just able to get a better idea on how that character is supposed to be. Comedic like characters would be another even though I know Sanji does have his funny moments, I'm better at characters that are on the more serious side or someone that just isn't a prankster 24/7. I tend to lean toward those types of characters instead of the ones that are there for the sake of comedy, etc.

I have been looking into Japanese Dorothea text, and I have been on Twitter and a few people who read the japanese text claimes that she was a comphet (compulsory heterosexual) lesbian. Is this actually true?
Hi! This question has been sitting around in my inbox for quite a while now, because... There's no true answer. Fire Emblem characters do not express explicit sexual orientations. Headcanon is headcanon; a person draws a conclusion based on how they interpret the game's events, mixed with their own personal experiences, likes/dislikes, etc. By nature headcanon is not something that can soundly be argued for or against, it's too personal. Even drawing a conclusion based on a character's S-Supports and/or their explicitly romantic character endings really isn't the same as them explicitly saying their orientation, or having it listed in a character profile, etc.
I can't possibly make an argument that would persuade everyone out there what any character's sexuality is, especially when sexuality is never explicitly stated as something that really even exists in the FE worlds (I don't think). Sexual identity as a concept was not even conceived of IRL until the late 1800s and early 1900s (At least, that is the school of thought I studied in LGBTQIA+ studies in college.). We fans are just drawing our conclusions from canon clues, subtext, and headcanon.
What I can prove, though, is that none of Dorothea's conversations and endings detailing her romances (that I have read, covering EVERY bit of text is a bit tough) are all that different between English and Japanese!
I've translated all of Dorothea's endings, so this is an easy convo for me.
Dorothea Endings: Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3
Dorothea shares happily married endings with both m! and f! Byleth. Her endings with Ferdinand, Linhardt, Felix, Sylvain, Lorenz, and Hanneman all directly say she married them. Her opera with Yuri establishes that they fall in love. Her ending with Petra also directly says Petra loved her. And while her Japanese ending with Manuela does not use the word “love” like the localization does, the Japanese does say they “spent the rest of their lives living only for each other.” There will certainly be a crowd that denies that could possibly be romantic... but it's damning evidence for others.
Though one of Dorothea's main defining traits early on is her searching for a partner that will take care of her financially (see her Byleth supports for the most obvious examples), through her endings, we see that she will actually choose any partner from a varied list, male and female, across the entire social spectrum, and live happily. Granted, her romantic partners do tend to lean towards the noble class side... but I think that's more about the list of available partners in the game's canon than Dorothea herself.
Seeing that she changes from her original goals in a partner for financial/lifestyle security, and seems to live happily in a romance no matter her financial situation and lifestyle, I personally do not see the interpretation that Dorothea is a comphet lesbian. This holds true in both the Japanese and localized texts. There's little variation in translation there.
If you'd like to read more, check out the Dorothea supports I've translated, and feel free to request any other support chain you would like to see translated!

Hello! ✌🏻
To start, I am 28F, looking for RP partners 21+, though 25+ is more preferable. I tend to lean towards a more literate RP, multi para responses. Word count varies due to what is going on, level of muse, blah blah blah, but I do try to give my partners substance in my responses. I pretty much only RP on Discord now, as thats just more convenient for me and my busy schedule. I love talking OOC and gushing about the characters and plots.
Now that that is out of the way, the juicy stuff. Halloween is upon us, and while I’m a little late in the game in requesting a spoopy rp, better late than never. I am an unashamed 👹monster lover 👹. Monster romance is my fave and that’s what I’m craving. All monsters. Any monsters. Vampires, werewolves, aliens, demons, anything really. Preferably a male monster against my female human OC. While I have a few scenarios in mind, I don’t have any concrete ideas. Smut is to be expected, as well as any other NSFW content and darker themes.
Some pairings I have
Vampire x vampire hunter (he’s a new vampire and they were dating before he went missing)
Demon x Witch
I’m obsessed with the webtoon Atnomen so maybe even a Gargoyle x human
I’m open to anything in regards to pairing.
Like this and I’ll come bother you when I can.

I’ve talked about All American on here a few times and you should give that show a shot (it’s on Netflix in the US for catching up), now that I’m caught up and current on its spin-off All American: Homecoming, I highly recommend that as well.
Tumblr media
Both shows have large predominantly Black ensemble casts, with LGBTQ+ rep among its main characters, both allow its characters to be flawed, good, complicated, make mistakes, grow, both shows deal in generational trauma, both shows give depth to the parental and faculty generation as well as the young characters, both directly address socially and culturally relevant difficult subjects in its stories from a character-driven standpoint.
One thing AA:H does that AA doesn't, and something that is very rare on tv, is centering female athletes. All the pressures and the entwining of the sport as a canvas for telling personal stories and how they deal with life is here the way tv has done for male athletes, and AA does via football, AA:H does this for women (tennis players). AA:H also has male athletes (baseball players) as main characters, but it’s balanced between the women athletes and the men.
Also as with AA, there's focus on different discplines not just sports. AA:H has a main character who is a dancer, there’s another who used to be in football and had to give that up, so he moves over into music. AA:H also has an array of parent and faculty generation of characters who are given depth and dimension. There’s a lot about generational trauma, social pressures, societal pressures, professional pressures. There’s found family and blood family love and troubles, there’s a really good storyline about adoption.
AA:H along with using sports as its canvas for personal stories (tennis and baseball) is most of all about life at an HBCU (Historically Black college and universities). The fictional Bringston University is set in Atlanta, GA, although the series is filmed in Burbank, CA.
The whole cast is excellent and the writing is poignant and the cinematography and directing is top-notch. The characters are all multi-dimensional. And as with All American the exploration of pressures put on Black women in particular is a highlight.
I tend to be very genre focused in my choices in TV, I lean towards SF and magic and monster hunting and mystical warriors as the canvas, but sometimes I latch onto mainstream dramas and AA and AA:H are doing really really good things, not just “good for CW” but doing some things few shows on broadcast or streaming are doing. All American and All American: Homecoming deserve far more attention than they’re getting.
(I’m sorry that CW network’s reputation seems to have played a role in harming shows like these, because people understandably grew wary of touching the network. But right now is a really good time to support AA and AA:H, give them streaming views, if you get caught up, give them views in the CW app. They’re the top 2 performers in demo on CW right now so I’m fairly sure they will survive the next wave of cuts but anything fans can do to demonstrate to the new network ownership the value of these shows would be a good idea too).

IS is using Female Alear more to make up for the fact that they're going to be using Male Alear for the Engage manga coming out. Makes sense though since they're putting the Engage manga in a Shonen magazine and the manga is more likely to catch on with a male audience if they can self-insert as a male protagonist rather than a female protagonist. If they did a Three Houses manga, you can bet that they'd use Male Byleth as well and have him end up with Edelgard or Rhea in CF and SS respectively and probably two different girls in VW and AM. But knowing IS, they'd only adapt CF or SS rather than VW or AM. : /
Oh, no, I didn't mean IS. I was referring to the players, between the reviewers and the current players with the game being officially out. I just noticed that every single player I've ever seen on any site except Tumblr (YT, Twitter, etc) uses female Alear. Byleth was more varied, and even if female Byleth was more popular, it wasn't too difficult to find players using male Byleth.
Honestly, I think the reason they didn't adapt Houses is because they'd get backlash no matter what route they chose, from everyone who wanted the other routes. It would be a lot of work to do four entries for each route, even if they split the work between four different groups of writers/artists/editors/etc. It would also cost them a fair bit of money I'm sure, because while afaik manga itself isn't too expensive on its own to create, having to pay the people working on it would get pricey if they actually did all four of them.
Generally they seem to consider SS their canon route when it comes to non-Houses material (like Engage, though it's only implied through Byleth iirc, because each house leader talks about Byleth as if Byleth was their house's teacher. The consistency is misty in that regard, but it makes sense to keep everyone playing the game happy).
Other than that, in terms of Houses and its marketing directly, they tend to lean toward CF being the "canon" (?) route, that being, they don't directly come out and say it is, but they market with EdeIgard harder than any other character in the franchise itself (including, yes, their actual most popular character in the entire franchise itself, Ike). Since they market her so heavily, they have to imply they're marketing her route for her, whereas when it's just Byleth and it's a situation like Engage when he can speak to other characters with no specific route mentioned, it's more implied to be SS for him (which also makes sense as the fourth route and him being the fourth main lord).
The thing that just bugs me with their marketing for Houses is that they originally did market it in the Direct trailers as specifically three routes. They were all marketed pretty fairly in the very beginning, but then people saw a hot "girlboss" with an axe and went with her route (and that's true for both people who ended up not liking her and people who did. It's just that people's first impressions were pretty much automatically hot chick mc with axe. I have friends who either went with CF first and hated it and some who considered it but haven't played the game itself yet, but decided not play her route if they ever play the game because they don't like EdeIgard herself).
Nowadays it's not marked anything like the original trailers that fairly expressed how it's a game of multiple routes and that none of them are the "true" route. Even now that's technically true and they have to stand by that for consistency, but they've definitely blurred the line for the sake of money. Tbh I'm not even sure how IntSys sees Houses' fame, because yes it's a very popular game, but it's also now the most infamous game in the series... which is a feat, considering Fates was the most controversial prior. Fates' stuff was nothing like Houses though and the amount of fandom wank that existed in that fandom wasn't even remotely like Houses'. It just makes me wonder if IS is aware that Houses is kinda looked down upon and is infamous now for its fanbase being literally disgusting and full of harmful individuals.
Of course, we're definitely likely to see an increase in FE7 fandom wank and the return of violent, aggressive Lyn ship wars and Eliwood ship wars. Now that they've announced it's coming to the Switch, I do totally expect that fandom to be up and at 'em with the wank and using it as an excuse to fight with other fans and toss around nasty comments to other players. I mean, it was bad enough originally, but now we have this new wave of crazy players who belong in a psych ward (and I'm not even saying that sarcastically, I'm saying that tons of idiots on the internet who behave the way they do literally need to be in a psych ward and I wouldn't make fun of that bc I've literally been in one for my own health some years ago). Can't expect the game to just bring in happy fans who are glad to see it return, since that will probably be buried by whacked out assholes.
Get ready for the stans to be like "Ninian evil, she dragon! Humans fought dragons in the past bc dragons evil!" and that will be our new Eliwood ship war starter line.
