More favorite shots from Army of the Doomstar!

Post below the cut because it’s long and it goes without saying: Major spoilers for Army of the Doomstar! Note: I did increase the exposure on a few of these because there were a few very dark scenes.

I love how they showed so effectively how isolated and depressed Murderface was becoming. He doesn’t even have his usual sneer, he just looks so defeated which is especially sad; Murderface’s character was always able to complain and moan but his spirit is so broken that there’s nothing to even say, all he can do is look down.

The fist or the hand?

Murderface looking trapped here always gets to me. The more times I watch this, the more feelings I have about Murderface and how beautifully they portrayed his arc. This is another of my favorite shots in the whole movie.

This one really hurt my heart - Nathan seeing Magnus at the very end, and Magnus looks so kind and soft. This is how Nathan thinks of and remembers him, despite everything that happened. Nathan loved his brother so much and Magnus didn’t realize it (at least not until it was too late and taking himself out of the picture was the only option he saw).

Comparing that to how he recalled Magnus at the beginning when he collapsed at the concert shows that what he saw at the end were his true feelings - he forgave Magnus and was able to remember him with love again. (I actually think Magnus is still alive but that’s another post.)

This shot of the Whale Goddess really took my breath away.

Something I’ve always really appreciated about Metalocalypse is how they draw the regular jackoffs. They always represent lots of diversity in the crowds without making normal people into caricatures. Every one of us can see ourselves out there in the crowds of the Army of the Doomstar.

Who else did it like Root. Shaw was having an existential crisis after being tortured through 7,000 simulations and pulled a gun out on herself because she would've rather risked that she was killing herself for real than risk turning on Root and killing her, and Root's response was to whip a gun out under her own chin. Her recklessness was so unhinged that Shaw snapped out of it!!! And then she went on a whole fourth wall breaking monologue about how okay maybe EVERYTHING was a simulation but so what!!! And in the end it was just an elaborate setup for an ass joke because a lethal shootout wasn't gonna make her not appreciate how good her girlfriend's butt looked while they were hiding behind a car!!! All this within two episodes and without getting into the other unhinged shit she did!!! One of the Most Characters of all time tbh

There is something about the mirroring of how Ei and Nahida handled their respective Harbinger enemies (abandoning Scaramouche and killing Signora versus reasoning with Dottore and taking Scaramouche in when no one else cares to). It's like.... Nahida had every reason to toss Scara aside and blame him for the wrongs of the Sages, and she IS angry that he has benefitted from the suffering of her people and continues to lash out at both Nahida herself and the traveller. But he's just. He's a puppet and he was made to do things and in the aftermath of the cataclysm he couldn't live up to those expectations, Ei denied him the opportunity. So now he's scrambling for a semblance of purpose and dragging Sumeru into his identity crisis, but Nahida sees the tool he's being used as, sees that he's been denied personhood by those who control him (like her! Her heart (gnosis) powering the akasha while she rots) and she treats him with kindness.

She could kill him. Could send him back to the Fatui. Could have him imprisoned. He's a comatose robot, he doesn't need her to fuss over him but she's!!! She's a kind goddess and she understands what it's like to be tossed aside and denied your birthright purpose.

(And Ei kills and commits to violence and cruelty, but she's also just a product of the trauma she's had. But then did Signora deserve to die? She sowed chaos in Inazuma, but Ei let that happen. Ei killed her not out of anger or malice but cold judgement when she lost the duel, an uncaring punishment where Nahida is overflowing with compassion even for those who've hurt her).

Finally made time to watch The Devil's Plan (might've forgotten it came out whoop) but how is no one talking about the majority alliance even more? Like yes, most people point at ORBIT and Dong-joo for their hypocrisy in making themselves the "underdogs", but no one talks about those who got pushed to the side and became pawns from the start. Yeon-woo, Seungkwan, and Yumin almost immediately became disposable for the sake of protecting others in the "alliance". What's worse is that they almost couldn't do anything to work against it; most of them had just not been aggressive enough in their gameplay to stand out and find strength in their own regard. That being said, I'm glad the three managed to make it as far as they did, and fuck those who used them for their own personal benefit without giving anything in return.

Will I ever be done ranting about the things I love from your fics? The jury’s still out, but today I’m thinking about the differences in the way Luke and Din express the importance of one another. Luke is comfortable voicing that stuff out loud. Outright telling Din that he dreams about him, that he thinks about their time on Vos 3 when he’s overwhelmed, that focusing on Din in the Force helps him settle his mind. Meanwhile Din is a man of few words and he has trouble expressing his thoughts and feelings as such, but his actions scream how much he feels with naming his ship after their time together, and keeping the blindfold safe and with him through the months and his fierce protectiveness of a man who’s more than capable of keeping himself safe. I just love them your honor

I lovelovelove all the different ways people show who they are and who other people are to them through their words and actions and even just thoughts. I love the idea that Luke is more expressive and open and balances Din's preference and habit of doing and showing rather than speaking. I love thinking how much they'd appreciate each other's love language, how freely Luke expresses it to Din and how carefully Din shows it to Luke. And I love the challenge of imagining and writing how they could and would express themselves to each other based on who they are and what we know about them.

Honestly, I will never stop talking about reading bell hooks in high school and being taken in by what she wrote about love (in this case, romantic love since we're talking about a ship lol). It's the idea that perhaps we'd all be better off if we treated love as an active thing, a verb, a choice and decision made every moment and every day, rather than some passive thing we fall into, that we let happen. It really moved me epsecially as a young idiot ace, and every shipfic I've written since always tried to keep that idea in mind.

I think that's a big part of the appeal of Din and Luke as a relationship and a partnership. I just love imagining all the ways they'd bond, the ways they'd choose to keep being near each other, the ways they'd show their love and respect for one another. They have different yet compatible ways of expressing their love and respect for each other, and I just think that's fucking neat.
