If you let me chapter 1

Céline was wandering around, thinking about a girl, she thought she would only ever love Stephen, but she knew he would never love her back like that, they had their son together and they were friends, but that is all they would ever be.

But there was someone else, Rosemary, when she first saw her she thou6she was beautiful, but she didn't know she was attracted to her, in fact Céline didn't know she liked girls like that at all, but whenever she thought of Rosemary, she blushed and her heart sped up, the last time her and Rosemary hung out, she wanted to play with her her and wondered what kissing her would feel like.

But again, Céline loved someone she couldn't have, Rosemary was married to a man named Johnny, he was abusive and an ass, Céline wanted to take Rosemary away but Rosemary had their baby 6 months ago, Jace was six now, Céline didn't know why but when she was looking for names she came across the name Jace and her and Stephen agreed to name him that, his middle name was after an ancestor, Jace William Herondale, her baby, Stephen had been killed in on a mission by Valentine, Céline knew it was him and it had broken her, Jace never knew his father but he left a letter, Céline had never opened it, she was waiting for Jace to be old enough, she only survived cause she caught on to what Valentine had been doing to Jace, and she kept it a secret, but she also knew Valentine wasn't really dead, and that sent chills down her spine.

But back to happier thoughts, It was nice to hold a baby again, Rosemary named her son Christopher and Céline loved the little baby boy, so did Jace, Céline would daydream about raising their boys together and being happy together, yeah she wasn't straight.

"Mangoes," Jace said

Céline looked over and saw someone was selling fresh mangoes, her Jace loved mangoes

"We'll get some, baby," she said

"Yay," he said, in his toddler voice that made Céline's heart feel so much love for him.

They got some, and went back home, she cut some up for Jace and he gladly ate them, and thanked her afterwards, also gave her a hug and a kiss, even tho she didn't have romantic love in her life she had all the love in this little boy that she would ever need.

Rosemary was lying awake, thinking about her again, lately she couldn't get Céline out of her head, she shouldn't be thinking about her like this, she was married, though she didn't love Johnny anymore, she thought she would love him forever but sometimes you fall out of love, right?

She remembered his reaction when she told him she was pregnant with Kit, he wasn't happy but he didn't get angry either, she didn't know what to think about his reaction, she hoped he loved their son, but she'd see Céline with him and she was so gentle and sweet and kind, and little Jace was too, and Rosemary thought, Johnny wasn't that way with Kit.

She felt tears fall down her face, she was so unhappy now, and she had to worry about the riders finding her, she met with Magnus Bane and he helped her with a spell that concealed her for a time but she had to have it recast on her ragularly, she didn't know how he had done but he did, she finally decided to listen to the Silent Brother who called himself Brother Zachariah, and he told her to see Magnus Bane, and somehow he did it, she could never repay him.

Johnny was out late in the Shadow Market , doing who knows what, and she wished Céline was here to lighten things, but Céline was in Paris and she was in Los Angeles, Céline would come visit from time to time, she said she wanted to let Jace experience travel a little, and she often came here for her job, she was a photographer and she was amazing and talented, Rosemary knew why people Hired her for photoshoots, Céline had left the Shadowhunter life and was now hiding in ways, she didn't keep it a secret and she said when Jace could understand she would tell him, because he would figure out anyway. but Rosemary wasn't sure if she should tell Kit when he grew up, but he would need to know so he would be safe.

Céline had put Jace to bed and decided to look at the mail, there was a letter from Maryse Lightwood, she had kept in touch with them, they weren't friends but she wanted to keep contact with someone, and Maryse did in a professional way, though she did notice Maryse would mention her kids from time to time now, Céline wished Jace could meet them, be around other kids more, he played with the downworld children here, but Céline had to be careful who he interacted with, he was so sweet and gentle with them, he didn't think any differently of them, and she thought if only we kept the thought process and innocence of kids, maybe we wouldn't be so cruel to Downworlders.

Maryse wrote in the letter that if Céline was interested she could come to the New York Institute for a while and their kids could meet, she would have to take up that offer and maybe invite Rosemary if she can get away from Johnny, but Rosemary probably wouldn't want to, Céline was still nervous around Robert Lightwood, and she knew people didn't look at her kindly, saying she stole Stephen from Amatis and that Jace shouldn't have been born, and if it were just her they were talking about she wouldn't care but not her baby, he is good, so so good.

She left in the night when she was 8 months pregnant, Valentine intended to kill her and she knew but she escaped and had hid herself well enough he didn't find her, she wondered what Imogen thought, she had never met her grandson but how could Céline face that woman, she would exile her and probably take Jace, she couldn't allow that.

She was exhausted mentally and emotionally

She also heard Jocelyn ran away, she wondered wherw she went, and even though she knows Jocelyn hates her, she hoped she was ok.

Céline decided to call it a night and get ready for bed, she checked in Jace one last time before she did, and climbed into her bed, letting sleep take her away.

She woke to the sound of Jace saying mommy, and opened her eyes

"Baby what's wrong?" She asked as she picked him up and put sat him on her bed

"I had a bad dream again," he said

"It's ok, by sweet boy," she said and rocked him in her arms

Jace often had dark dreams, she wasn't sure why but she did her best to comfort him when he did, and she would let him stay with her on the nights he had them, he snuggled up to her and went back to sleep, she also fell back to sleep with him in her arms, everything will be alright she told herself every night, he can find you she thought, he can't take Jace away from you. Maybe she should go to the New York Institute, maybe she would be safer there?

Tony had debated about how to best pop the question for almost a year now.

He and Stephen were extremely open and communicative about their relationship, and for the past few years they’d mutually decided that it would be too complicated and too risky to get married with so much chaos and trouble brewing in the cosmos. Most of the Avengers remembered too well how their loved ones of the past had been used against them, and neither Tony nor Stephen were willing to let that happen to each other. So instead they’d spent their quiet relationship stealing moments where they could, cherishing nights where no one would need them, snatching quick kisses in the shadows of their enemies. They’d waited patiently, content to simply be something a little more than friends. But the past months has been mysteriously quiet of any danger or catastrophic world events, and Tony was starting to get antsy. He couldn't possibly wait for another moment of peace to roll around in several years time. It was now or never.

But how best to go about it?

He could propose in front of the whole wide world, like he’d done with Pepper all those years ago (until that relationship came to a mutual close-- it hadn’t been fair to Pepper to keep running off on world-saving missions). He could do it in the sight of his teammates and friends, but that would give them WAY too much material to tease him with until the end of time. He could build a crazy cool proposal bot that could… no, too complicated. Ring in a fancy glass of champagne at dinner? Too materialistic. A night in Paris under the Eiffel Tower? ...nah, too cliche. He could go the dramatic route-- drop to his knees after a near-death battle and beg Stephen to marry him on the spot-- but that was even MORE cliche. More than once he’d been tempted to simply ask him out of the blue without any warning, just to see him spit out his morning tea and gag in surprise. But frankly, all those ideas sucked, and Tony was no closer to deciding anything.

The only thing Tony HAD decided on was a ring. It was a heavy, simple thing, wrought out of a dark dusty gold. It looked plain at a quick glance, but on closer inspection it was engraved with dozens of magical symbols and spells of protection and love and life. He’d enlisted a far too amused Wong to help him with that, and though he’d complained the whole time, Tony could tell there was part of him that was pleased. Or at least happy enough that he hadn’t ratted Tony out to anyone yet, including Stephen himself.

But that had been over two months ago. The ring had taken up residence in Tony’s bedside drawer, tucked in a neat black box under a pile of mechanical bits and bobs Tony tinkered with when he couldn’t sleep. Occasionally he dug it out just to look on it, promising himself that today would be the day. But each time worked up the courage, he backed out at last minute. And then he cursed himself and tried to think up a new plan, this one even better than the last failed one. And so the nervous cycle continued, Stephen blissfully unaware (or, at least pretending to be unaware) of what his short and anxious boyfriend was up to.

And it looked like today was going to be no different. Tony woke up to the glare of the morning sun streaming through his window, sleepy eyes immediately flicking towards his bedside drawer. Maybe today. They were going out for dinner tonight, he remembered. Maybe then. Maybe during dessert? Or while they were walking home under the glow of the moon? Or in the dead of night as they lay entwined in Tony’s bed, perhaps…

Beside him in bed Stephen shifted, still asleep. The morning sun shone down on his face, bathing him in an ethereal glow as his chest rose and fell in time with his breathing. He must have tossed the covers aside in the middle of the night (Tony discovered that particular habit of his when he’d woken up one morning swamped in blankets and Stephen next to him, completely uncovered), and the remaining blankets were tangled up in his long legs. He was wearing nothing but a pair of Tony’s sweatpants, the hem of some brand-name underwear just barely peeking out from under them to hug his hips. He snored away softly, nose scrunched up and his cheek was squished against his pillow, but Tony decided that he’d never seen anything more beautiful in his life.

As tempted as he was to reach across the bed and kiss Stephen, Tony made himself slide out of bed and pick up his AC/DC shirt from of the floor where it had ended up last night. As he pulled the rumpled fabric over his head and changed into a pair of fresh underwear, he thought about the day ahead. He was going to be busy; there was a UN meeting at noon, an Avengers meeting before that, and probably an afternoon full of checking up on the various security systems he’d put in place after the last attack on New York a little over a year ago. They seemed to be doing their job, plainly, but one could never be too safe.

Tony frowned as he looked up, searching around for his pants. They were nowhere to be seen at the moment, so Tony’s eyes inadvertently wandered back over to Stephen’s sleeping form, his gaze softening. All he wanted in the world at this very moment was the sorcerer.

Now or never.

Tony sucked in a breath, a burst of excitement and nervous energy washing over him. Now or never. He tapped at a panel on the wall, waking F.R.I.D.A.Y.

“F- F.R.I.D.A.Y,” Tony, murmured with his newfound giddiness. “Tell the Avengers I’m going to be late to the team meeting.”

“Sir?” F.R.I.D.A.Y’s accented voice echoed softly from the wall. “Are you feeling well? My sensors suggest your heart rate is going unusually fast. Do you need me to also alert the Avengers that--”

“No! No, I’m fine. Just-” he sucked in another breath, almost bouncing on the balls of his bare feet. “Just let them know Stephen and I will be around later. Tell them not to come looking for us.”

If Tony had programed F.R.I.D.A.Y with more of a smartass personality, he might have gotten some more questions than that. But the AI was simply quiet for a moment, then replied with a simple, “will do, Boss.” Tony imagined her zooming off through her network to gossip with Vision or Wanda about what he might be up too, then shook the silly image from his mind. He had something to do this morning.

Tony padded across the room and back into his bed, leaning over Stephen with all the care in the world. His heart felt as though it was stuttering in his chest as he leaned down to press his mouth against the sorcerer’s forehead; Stephen shifted, smiling sleepily.

“G’mornin,” he mumbled, his eyes fluttering open to meet Tony’s.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.”

Tony’s hand shook slightly as he pushed Stephen’s messy hair back from his face, a shy smile tugging up the corners of his mouth. Fighting monsters? No problem. Getting whisked away to some abandoned planet? Tony never sweated it. Asking his boyfriend to marry him? Another matter entirely.

He must have looked queasy, because Stephen politely pulled away from his hand to prop himself up in bed.

“Tony?” he asked, pushing the blankets off himself so he could sit up in bed cross-legged, a usual morning habit of his. “Are you feeling okay? You look like you’re on the verge of… something.”

“I’m fantastic” Tony reassured him with a smile, but there was a nervous crack to his voice that made Stephen squint in a concerned, sleepy way. He took a deep breath, steadying his nerves. “Can I take both your hands for a sec, honey?”

Stephen smiled at Tony’s question, always appreciating whenever he asked permission to touch his scarred up hands. He held them out towards his boyfriend, nodding.

“They’re all yours.”

For the first time ever, Tony’s hands were trembling worse than Stephen’s. He tried to ignore that as he took the sorcerer’s hands in his own, giving them a gentle squeeze. Where did he even start? There was so much he wanted to say.

“Stephen,” Tony breathed, his body relaxing a little. “I ain’t… I’m not real good at being sappy,” he admitted, looking down at their entwined hands. “But, uhm, here goes.”

He looked back up at Strange, who, to his credit, looked on with a gentle, patient innocence that seemed to boost Tony’s confidence.

“Stephen, I’ve, I’ve loved you since I met you.” Tony breathed in again, his heart rate slowly returning to normal. “Remember when we met? Your cloak slapped me and you told me my Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavor sucked, remember?”

“I did not!” Stephen said indignantly, cracking a sunny smile. “I said it was chalky. It was!”

Tony had to laugh. “Fine, fine, whatever. The point is, I… kinda really fell hard for you,” he murmured. “You stuck by my side and believed in me, and I wanted nothing more than to do everything in my power to protect you.” Another breath, another gentle squeeze of the hands. “You comforted me when I had nightmares, and you held me when I panicked. And I can’t tell you how grateful I was, how grateful I am, for everything you do.”

Stephen was smiling, though his eyebrows were creased slightly, undoubtedly wondering what all this was about.

“Of course I did, Tony,” he whispered. “And you helped me with my hands. You let me lean on your shoulder and you supported me through the hard times, too.” He shifted so that he was closer to Tony, so close that he could feel his warm breath on his nose. “Are you sure you’re okay? What’s going on?”

Tony’s lip trembled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. Don’t cry, you old sap, don’t cry!

“Stephen, I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life, because… because you’re in it with me. I can’t imagine a single day without you next to me. These past few years with you have been the best of my whole time here on earth, and… and… I want you by my side for the rest of my days.” He reached over, fumbling with his bedside drawer and wrenching it open. Mechanical bits and bobs clinked together as he fished out the little black box, pulling it into his lap in plain sight.

Stephen’s eyes widened with sudden, shocked understanding.

“Tony…! I…”

“Stephen,” Tony whispered, voice a little choked up. “Look, I love you more than anything in this world.” He opened the box with a gentle click, and heard Strange’s sharp gasp of breath as the morning sun glimmered off of the ring. Tony ignored his own misty eyes, and took Stephen’s hands in his own again as he did his best to kneel on the bed.

“Would you please marry me?”

A heartbeat of stunned, agonizing silence followed before Stephen threw his arms around Tony.

“Yes,” he breathed, holding onto Tony as if he were the last thing in the world. “God Tony, yes, of course!”

Tony managed a giddy laugh, holding just as tight to Stephen. He pulled him down onto the bed for a kiss, a couple of happy tears dripping down onto the sorcerer’s face as their mouths pressed together. Tony fumbled around with a free hand, grabbing the little black box and reluctantly pulling away from the kiss.

“Well, you’ll be needing a ring then,” Tony chuckled, tugging the engagement ring out of its cushioned box. He took Stephen’s left hand gently in his own and slid the ring onto his finger, both their hands trembling.

Stephen’s face lit up with joy as the ring made a sparking sound, the engravings glowing briefly before fading. “It’s beautiful,” he whispered, twisting it on his finger. He looked up at Tony, a twinkle in his eye. “Did you drag Wong into helping you with this? How long have you guys been keeping the secret?”

Tony grinned, wrapping his arms around Stephen again, holding him from behind. “Oh, just a couple months,” he said arily, tucking his chin over the sorcerer’s shoulder. “I was afraid Wong would spill.”

Stephen smiled, twisting to kiss Tony again. “Damn you two,” he murmured, snuggling down into the embrace. “It’s perfect.”

The couple fell quiet, each simply happy to hold the other. Tony’s eyes closed lazily in the morning sun, while Stephen was simply content to admire his ring and be spooned. After a while the sorcerer’s hands glowed orange briefly, and the blankets by the foot of the bed straightened themselves out and floated upwards to tuck around the pair of them. The room was quiet and full of sunshine and love and peace.

And a Tony drew his love closer, he was glad he hadn’t popped the question in any other way.

2019 could have been written by Gary Shteyngart. The president tried to buy Greenland this year. Who could have imagined reading that sentence four years ago? In 2019 the septuagenarian president’s staff photoshopped his head onto the body of a young Sylvester Stallone and then got all huffy when none of us believed it was real. In 2019 an Oscar-nominated actress went to prison for paying someone to sweeten her daughter’s SAT score. 2019 gave us an eight-way tie for first in the National Spelling Bee. Twenty-eight different people decided to run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2019.1 In 2019 Jeffrey Epstein–credibly accused of sex-trafficking minors to a number of high-profile men–died while in police custody, spawning a thousand different conspiracy theories that spanned the entire political spectrum.2 Britain and Israel both spent most of 2019 trying to sort out who should run the countries and neither of them seem to have come up with a satisfactory answer, although Britain did manage to find time in its busy schedule to yell at its newest duchess–a biracial divorced American–for various imagined transgressions. In 2019 someone inexplicably agreed to marry Stephen Miller.3 And it wasn’t just the news that was weird: in 2019 my personal life was also extremely–well, let’s just say eventful. In April, right before the Game of Thrones premiere, my husband and I were smugly congratulating ourselves on weathering some family medical storms when we got a phone call that sent everything spiraling into chaos all over again.4 And still there was more: If you had told me on January 1 of 2019 that in less than a year I would be living in a different house in a different city with a different job, I would not have believed you. And yet here we are. And so in 2019 I used reading mostly as an escape: with a couple of exceptions, I responded most strongly to non-fiction that allowed me to imagine a different reality and fiction that held out the prospect of a happy ending or, failing that, that offered me a pleasantly whimsical world to inhabit for a few hours. 2019 was not a year when I went in search of deep character development or narrative realism or emotional truth. In 2019 I wanted to play pretend. Do not take that to mean that my favorite books of the year offered nothing more than escapism. No, the best books gave me everything: a different world, yes, but also beautiful prose and vividly drawn characters and original thoughts that made me put the book down and stare dreamily into the distance. What these books all have in common is that I’m still thinking about them now, weeks or months after I read them. The list, in the order that I read the books:

Bowlaway, by Elizabeth McCracken. It’s about candlepin bowling, and family, and marriage, and love. Some people didn’t like it because it isn’t super-plotty, but I loved hanging out with McCracken’s characters

L. E. L.: The Lost Life and Scandalous Death of Letitia Elizabeth Landon, the Celebrated “Female Byron”, by Lucasta Miller. If you read Miller’s The Bronte Myth, then you know to expect great things from her latest. I have never been a scandalous woman, to my eternal regret, but this book let me imagine what it might be like to be one.

Golden State, by Ben Winters. I have been a Ben Winters fan since his Last Policeman trilogy. In this book he pays as much attention to plot and story as he does to world-building and the result is a captivating thriller in a world where lying is one of the most serious crimes you can commit.

City of Girls, by Elizabeth Gilbert. Look, I get it, Gilbert is not everyone’s cup of tea. But I love her characters and I found this book wildly engaging, a story about a fun, naughty girl who unashamedly loves sex. It reminded me a bit of Sarah Waters’s Tipping the Velvet, but to be totally honest, I enjoyed this one more.

The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just Nation, by Brenda Wineapple. Does impeachment even matter if the president is not removed? In this account of the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, Wineapple makes the case that it does. She must have started this book before January 2017, because there’s a lot of research here — but it still made for awfully comforting reading while the debate over the current president’s impeachment swirled.

The Testaments, by Margaret Atwood. A follow-up to Atwood’s classic novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Is there a bit too much fan service in this novel? Does Atwood channel Katniss Everdeen to an excessive degree? Yes and yes. I loved it anyway. I liked the way Atwood bounced off the television series, making some plot points canon while refashioning others, and you know what, the hopeful ending may not be realistic but I’ll take it.

Sontag: Her Life and Work, by Benjamin Moser. There are few things I love more than big fat literary biographies. This one is smart and insightful and well-written, and will make you–as Jamaica Kincaid says–never want to be great. Sontag was a marvelous writer who was also a toxic parent, friend, and lover, and this book will make you consider, among other things, whether the one was worth the other.

Olive, Again, by Elizabeth Strout. OK, this one wasn’t escapism so much. On the other hand I think this is the first time I’ve ever had a best book list with two sequels on it.5 Maybe in 2019 I was trying to travel back in time? At any rate, this is Strout’s follow-up to Olive Kitteridge, a collection of short stories centering on one difficult woman that was my favorite book of 2008. The first book was insightful about love and marriage; this one is insightful about old age, loneliness, and coming to terms with yourself as you approach the end of your life.

Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland, by Patrick Radden Keefe. This is a pretty amazing account of a murder in 1972 that would only be solved thirty-plus years later. I cared about the victim, and I especially cared about her children, and I even found myself caring for the murderers. Along the way I learned a great deal about the IRA and “The Troubles,” about which I knew virtually nothing before.

The Enigma of Clarence Thomas, by Corey Robin. I have been angry at Clarence Thomas since I watched his hearings in my dorm room in 1991.6 Now that I have read Robin’s analysis of Thomas’s judicial philosophy, I am not less angry, but I do take Thomas more seriously as a thinker. Robin’s argument is that far from being a faint echo of Antonin Scalia, Thomas has developed his own strain of conservatism grounded in black nationalism. Maybe this is not an uncommon thesis among Supreme Court watchers–I don’t read legal journals so I don’t know–but it was new to me and I found it fascinating. Another book that wasn’t really an escape to a different world, but there’s nothing I like more than a fresh perspective on a subject I thought I’d made up my mind about.
