idk if you’ve seen amphibia but one of the characters who was a villain and had a redemption arc ended up being a psychologist in the epilogue and i started thinking about azula doing something like that and find the idea fucking hilarious lmfao
okay there’s quite a bit to unpack here. first, I would say that while azula and sasha may have some things in common, if anything, sasha is far more like zuko in many key ways. and while I would definitely refer to grime as a redeemed villain, I don’t think sasha ever actually counted as a villain, but rather an antivillain if anything. she’s always been framed in a sympathetic light (she's literally introduced chained to the wall of a prison cell), whereas azula is initially presented as someone unquestionably powerful and fearsome, and only much later in the show are her vulnerabilities displayed.
sasha getting a psych degree and working with kids makes a lot of sense for her character, because a) it shows that she’s grown to prioritize helping others over having power, influence, and control and b) she’s providing for kids what she needed at that age, doing right by her younger self. so I really don’t think azula working to improve the way mental health is viewed and treated in the fire nation, especially when it comes abused children, is absurd or hilarious at all. I think it’s a lovely idea, and even if I can’t see azula being someone who works one on one with kids, I definitely think her using her influence and intelligence to make meaningful reforms in the fire nation that have personal value to her due to her own history, including but not limited to these issues, would be a crucial part of her postwar arc during and after her recovery.

Speaking of poor takes on Zuko...
Tumblr media
What do you think?
Well, first of all this isn't so much of a hot take as it is straight up abuse apologism. It's not new, or cute, or smart or unique. It's abuse apologism. If you really feel "disgusted" by seeing an abuse victim empowered because you believe the lies their abuser said about them, then you are an abuse apologist.
Second, if you really feel disgusted at Zuko being a powerful bender and being firelord, maybe you shouldn't be watching the show.
Third, I've addressed this before, but it's funny that Zuko is the "salty" one when this entire post is the saltiest rant from someone who is mad that the show ended with a heroic character becoming powerful and a villainous character getting their comeuppance. Surprise, I guess?
Like, seriously, does this person know how fiction works? This post reads like it was written by a cartoon villain, and not the genre savvy kind of villain, the kind that is too dumb and/or too evil to realize why they caused their own downfall.
I am so tired of this. "But power is all she has!" Power is all Azula has because that is all she cared about, and she doesn't have that in the end because that is what happens when you forego actual values in pursuit of power, and when you abuse the power you have
Azula was born with power that she didn't deserve, a natural talent which caused her father to single her out so he could boost her ego and encourage her to be selfish and cruel and obsessed with controlling other people so that she could gain more power. But this is also what caused her to have a poor relationship with her brother, who she mistreated for being perceived as less powerful. It's what caused her to have a poor relationship with her mother, whose lessons she ignored because Ursa had no power, especially compared to her father. It's what caused her to have a poor relationship with her uncle, who she disdained for being a "quitter" and a "loser." It's what caused her to have a poor relationship with her friends, because she had to have power over them, had to control them with fear rather than having a real relationship where she's equal and vulnerable. Her need for power literally destroyed her entire life, and because of that, she ended up losing the power she had, to boot, because people who use their power to harm others do not deserve to have power.
That's the entire point. I can't even believe that someone would actually type that paragraph and think it was a good idea because if you said it to someone in person, you should probably expect to get smacked in the face.
Zuko gets to be powerful in the end because he dedicates his life to using that power to help people. If that disgusts you, then you deserve that smack in the face. I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people.
I also don't want to hear about how Zuko only redeemed himself because of "luck" or because he had help, because Azula didn't want any help changing and never made any steps to make any of those things happen. She didn't care about her mother trying to teach her right from wrong (until it was too late and she realized that she had becomes someone she didn't like, but too little too late). She didn't try to stop hunting the gaang. She didn't try to stop waging war on the rest of the world. She didn't try to listen to see her friends as real human beings instead of chess pieces she could control. Ditto with her brother. The reason she's alone and freefalling in "The Southern Raiders" is because she went there with the purpose of killing her brother and the gaang after her friends abandoned her because she tried to kill them, too. That's why she's alone. That's the purpose of that visual juxtaposed with Zuko having the gaang to help him and rescue him, because he also cared about them and tried to fight off his sister to save them.
And you know what? Zuko almost feels sorry for her, because she is alone. Because it is sad. It's a tragedy. But it's a tragedy of her own making, and when she looks back at Zuko, does she express any regret for her situation? For what she did to him? For how she hunted him down and also almost killed his new friends because he had the gall to leave his abuser?
No. Instead, she looks like this:
Tumblr media
The whole POINT of that scene is that it is a tragedy, but that Azula already made her choices long ago, and that's why she ultimately can't change her fate. She doesn't want to, she doesn't even realize she needs to. At this point, she's not even sad about her situation because she still thinks she's on top, she still thinks she's better than literally everyone around her, still grasping at that power that she thinks will fulfill her, without any understanding at all of the responsibility that comes with power, and that's also why she ultimately does not deserve it, either.

I saw a notification of someone’s comment like “you should have Azula on your pfp” or something like that to one of my posts, I guess they just blocked me after that because I can’t find that comment lol
So I met an anti-Israeli Azula hater, what an awful enemy of mine 😱
It’s funny but I took it quite seriously so I have something to say.
First of all YES, I AM “Azula apologist” in the way I think she’s the great villain BUT also she deserves redemption because SHE’S LITERALLY A YOUNG GIRL SHE’S A CHILD SOLDIER you know.
And thinking that Azula deserves redemption doesn’t mean supporting her actions as a villain. I guess it should be obvious.
And that leads us to the next point. You can’t compare Israel to the conquerors and colonizers, that’s fucking stupid. Go learn history or something idk. I also think that the whole “anti colonialism” hysteria is stupid in that form most of you into but that’s another topic to discuss.

judging you based on the elden ring character you simp for part 1:
i just have some thoughts okay - no one take this seriously i am just here for funsies soooo alright! let's go people
part 2
starting strong with the parents first:
marika
‌oh your mommy issues hit you so hard didn't it
‌you got a thing for milfs and i respect that part, but you might also be into toxic women so i want you to stay safe okay
‌you may or may not have a thing for tanya from mama mia (the hot wine auntie living the richie-rich stress free life that's around a three-time divorcee but we all love her in this house) OR OR maybe even valka from how to train your dragon (hiccup's mom and lemme just say for the record, wow what a woman)
radagon
‌he's mega hot and you just can't resist a man with a pretty face and washboard abs huh *winks*
‌you're most likely the best friend that mutually thirsts over hot celebrity dudes like chris evans and michael b. jordan
‌but this man literally just left his first wife high and dry with an egg so you're also likely the type to let a LOT of major red flags slide just because they're hot so honey please be careful
rennala
‌your type screams "i love powerful psycho women", i'm sorry i don't make the rules that is a fact
‌you are likely to be an unhinged and feral individual, and throwing it out there - there's also a high chance you're a sub
‌you're also probably an azula apologist (the epic and cunning girlboss of girlbosses from avatar the legend of aang)
you give me a strong vibes of "i support women's rights, but i also support their wrongs"
godfrey
‌you probably want to have someone so blindly devoted to you
‌so you're either the toxic person in relationships or the one that got hurt so bad in one and if the case is the later then i just want to say i'm so sorry darling

The Headband Re-Watch
This is a funny episode. I don’t think I have anything too groundbreaking to say about it, & I wouldn’t call it a favorite, but I always have fun with it. I know it’s a rip off of Footloose but I’ve never seen the real Footloose lol. I do kind of like that Aang rebels against the Fire Nation culture through something as universally human & expressive as dance - it’s a nice antithesis to the repression the Fire Nation seems to encourage. This is also the first & only time we get a look at regular Fire Nation culture & the indoctrination they grow up with. It’s an interesting glimpse at the everyday life of Fire Nation civilians.
Aang humiliating Hide is hilarious. +500 iconic behavior points. I also think this episode presents interesting evidence for those of us who like to write modern high school AUs. Aang’s role is clearly a bit of a class clown & also very much a popular kid. He instantly gets the entire class to like him enough to want to come to his illegal dance party AND to cover for him when they get caught. This kid has a very high charisma score. I’ll also admit that this is kind of a cute Kataang episode. I still don’t personally ship it but I can’t say anything against it in this episode. The party scene is funny & cute. The best thing about Kataang in this episode is that Katara is shown reciprocating Aang’s feelings. It’s obvious she has a bit of a crush here.
Katara & Sokka disguised as Aang’s parents will never fail to crack me up.
Tumblr media
[id: Sokka with a fake mustache & Katara fake pregnant while Aang sits between them looking sheepish. end id]
Sapphire & Waang Fire my beloveds. They’re so funny & dramatic. I always cast the Fire Siblings as theatre kids & I stand by that ‘cause there’s a lot of evidence for that too. But have you considered? The Water Siblings are also theatre kids. +500 iconic behavior points each for Sokka & Katara for their hilarious disguises.
Zuzu is a hot mess (affectionate) in this episode. I feel like for a while I was trying to pretend I wasn’t a blatant Zuko apologist but I totally am & I think maybe I should just embrace it. This is probably the episode where Zuko is the most asshole he’s been yet but I still feel bad for him. It’s just…. Is he a complete jerk for melting down while visiting Iroh in prison - a prison Iroh is in because of him? Yes. But also…. I mean, the thing is, you guys, he’s a teenager trying to undo a lifetime of freaking indoctrination. Iroh didn’t tell him to join the Avatar until it was literally showdown time. Iroh had already started to question the Fire Nation & consider the importance of balance, but he & Zuko didn’t talk about any of this! From Zuko’s perspective, siding with Azula is the exact thing that always would’ve been expected of him. I just feel bad for him. I still feel awful for Iroh too though, rotting behind bars because of his nephew who he views as a son… ouch. And honestly, I feel like the thing that hurts the most about this for Iroh isn’t even that he’s suffering personally it’s that he hates seeing Zuko choose his father & the Fire Nation after everything they went through.
Tumblr media
[id: Iroh facing the viewer, frowning. Zuko is in the background behind bars. end id]
Huge fan of shots that put a character outside of bars behind the bars so it’s unclear who’s imprisoned.
I love cinnamon topography.
Also, I love Mai & Zuko’s little picnic.
Tumblr media
[id: Zuko & Mai smiling on a picnic. End id]
After watching Wednesday, Mai calling the color orange disgusting as they watch the sunset reminds me of something Wednesday would say. They’re just so cute.
I like how Azula gets Mai to go away by telling her Ty Lee’s braid is tangled. Hey, ladies gotta have their priorities! Also, once again Zuko’s inability to lie pops up. Azula is literally being such a considerate little sister by warning Zuko about visiting Iroh. I don’t see how anyone could view this any other way. She’s looking out for her big brother & I think that’s really cute.
I have nothing else to say about this episode. Tune in next time for more rambling recaps!

The azula and zutara fandom are so amazingly similar zuko x azula did nothing wrong. Mai aang iroh abd ursa are abusers. Katara has no agency with aang azula has no agency at all both fandoms are sexist to girls thru claim to love
Azula fans act like they're better than the zutara fandom but I find them just as obnoxious and condescending to anyone refusing to agree them with their shitty fanon takes they will assume yoy hate children
. Last i checked a character needing redemption meant they did bad shit not they never did anything wrong and are nothing but a victim .
I want to be very clear here, there are plenty of lovely fans who love Azula, and plenty of lovely Zutarans. This is why I always try to talk about a certain class of Azula fans, or Azula fans who do X, and I don't talk about Zutarins, I talk about Mai-hating Zutarans, or Aang-hating Zutarans, or even just Mai-and/or-Aang haters.
These are subgroups, and for the most part, only involve a tiny handful of really loud assholes. Sometimes their opinions filter through into the wider fandom discourse, and in softened form become popular throughout the larger group, but for the most part it's a handful of loud assholes.
But yeah, I have definitely had very similar experiences with both subgroups, and they are the two subgroups that have both been very willing to fling accusations that I am an abuse apologist, and that my fannish opinions make me a terrible person, and who talk about me behind my back and treat me like some kind of boogyman.
But to be fair, the absolute creepiest and most batshit behavior I ever had to deal with in fandom was the person who on multiple occasions, several months apart, impersonated me to send anon hate to people, and who ended up impersonating several friends of mine to do the same, even going so far as to make an actual tumblr that was one letter off from the main account of a popular blogger. That person turned out to be an anti-Zutara hard core Maiko shipper. Assholes are assholes no matter what they ship.
And actually I think that this idea that we are in some kind of competition with each other, instead of all trying to enjoy the same piece of media in our own way, is not at all healthy. Some of the worst excesses on the part of fans comes from this idea that this is a competition we are trying to win, instead of a place where we come together to enjoy something in different ways.

Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking, from one writer and Azula apologist (and Azutara enjoyer, even though I'm not as active in that ship as I once was) to another - you do such great work, how are you able to publish so regularly? I have a lot of stress in my personal life right now and at first my fics were a fun escape from that, but now they feel like another thing I have to work on. How do you enjoy the process and motivate yourself to publish so consistently?
Hi there! Sorry to hear about having a lot of stress in your personal life! I'm afraid I don't know if my advice will be applicable if stress is something that you have to endure long term. :( It's possible that writing only works as a short term solution in your particular situation and you do have to address the stress in your life first - not knowing your circumstances I don't know how realistic that is, of course.
In my case, I've struggled with depression and anxiety for the past 10 years of my life. The way I cope with it is by creating routines, and writing has simply become a part of my routine. This means that I don't wait for an inspiration to write. I simply set aside a time of day and tell myself: "I am going to write for two hours this afternoon, this is my writing time." And sure, sometimes I feel really uninspired. Sometimes I want to fool around with a shiny new video game or watch a new episode of a show I love. But after a while of forcing myself to stick to the routine, I have reached a stage where I can just sit down and write even if I don't feel particularly inspired. I just power through, and sooner or later the words start coming and I get in the groove.
Well, that's my secret anyway. :) I've created a routine where I will write almost every day, even if sometimes as little as an hour or half and hour. It takes some discipline to maintain this routine, but I can tell you that after doing this for years, at some point it starts to feel very natural.
I don't know if this will be very helpful to you, because you mentioned becoming extra stressed because writing is starting to feel like another job, and my answer was... yeah, you kind of make it almost like another job - but at least it's a job you love, right?
Of course, if your life is in a flux and undergoing changes, creating routines in the middle of that might not be possible. But perhaps something in my reply was still helpful. Hang in there and I hope you'll find a way to keep writing! :)

so y'all can forgive a grown ass man for besieging ba sing se of his own free will and his 16 year old nephew for chasing the avatar and burning down kyoshi island and his 14 year old niece for infiltrating ba sing se and helping to nearly bring the destruction of the earth kingdom but you can't forgive a 16 year old boy for acting on trauma? interesting.
"but the people he could have killed" look me in the eyes and say that the casualty numbers from the ba sing se siege are not comparable to gaipan. tell me that you believe that.

I find it funny how Azula stans say that Zuko’s cruel for putting Azula in an asylum (no implication that they’re abusing Azula) but if he’d done something different like pit her in prison (horrendous living conditions), they’d say it’s not fair for Azula to be imprisoned likely her whole life when Iroh or Jeong Jeong did the same crimes as her. Or they’ll say it’s clearly a sign of Azula hatred for putting her in close proximity with her father. There’s just no winning. Any thoughts?
There is no winning, and that's the point. These people are abuse apologists and they want to be angry about made up stuff because it feeds their victim complex, so nothing is going to please them. That's why they're drawn to Azula in the first place, because they know she is never going to get the happy ending they think she "deserves" and they have her same personality and sense of entitlement.
Iroh and Jeong Jeong stopped trying to hurt people. Azula did not, and she lost her freedom as a result. Her brother was kind enough to get her help instead of just throwing her in prison like Ozai - she would not have to be in close proximity to him at all, she could have been put in a cell far away from him or even a seperate facility - so they make up bullshit about how she's being abused.
If being in prison equals horrendous living conditions, then where is this energy for Ozai? As I said, abuse is not a matter of how much sympathy you have for the victims. No one deserves abuse. If Azula doesn't deserve this treatment, then neither does Ozai. But the main difference between Azula and Ozai vs Iroh, Jeong Jeong, and Zuko is, again, that they are no longer a danger to those around them, and Azula and Ozai are. That's the issue. It's not about who deserves to be punished, it's about them being separated from society for the protection of other people.
In real life, I actually am very against the way the prison system is run, but in a fantasy series where the villains need to be stopped for the sake of the world? Claiming something is abuse because you don't like that a villain (who themselves is an abuser) was defeated is extremely ugly and distasteful and so divorced from any real world issues that I cannot take it seriously.

This is the first that I'm hearing about Game of Thrones fans in the ATLA fandom. Am I just really out of the loop or is this a new development?
I’m not sure it’s new really. There’s not many of them- I think they just have their own side blogs and stuff.
They’re the “aang should’ve killed Ozai” crowd, the ones who want katara to kill, the ones who are azula apologists to an extreme level (what I mean by that is they think she did nothing wrong) and yeah they sound like fire nation supremacists-
