31 Days of Horror
Day Two: Howl
So, this wasn't on the list. "What happened to "Lights Out?" Who cares? It wasn't on Hulu. So I improvised and picked one of the movies I had to cut out.
So, what is Howl? Howl is a 2015 movie about a group of British passengers on a train going from London to Eastborough when it is almost derailed after hitting a deer. The stopped train becomes a hunting ground for a bloodthirsty werewolf.
This movie jumped into things really quick, briefly introducing each character before the action started. Joe is a train guard who is a bit of a pushover when it comes to his job. At first, I was a bit unimpressed, but I remembered quickly that horror movies are supreme when it comes to developing characters. And I was right on the money.
The movie was decent. I enjoyed it; though some moments were more enjoyable than others. Joe was a good main character and I enjoyed almost every minute. His love interest, Ellen, was also a good character though I felt she was just kind of there if she wasn't doing something notable. Some of the supporting characters, like Adrian, Billy, Matthew, and Kate, stuck out immediately. I really enjoyed particular moments of each of these characters, whether good or bad. But the character of Jenny was fantastic. I am not sure how the shifting Jenny was played in the movie, but it worked so well. The image of her slowly turning body, and those beady eyes... Damn.
Not a bad watch. ^^ Glad I picked it.

i believe in love, how it can change lives, how it makes room for the spectacular in the moment. i was reminded of this today by diana wynne jones and hayao miyazaki. within stories of magic, those that are timeless are those that write and give life to love in some way, shape, or form (i'm looking at you, 2015 cinderella)

Howl (2015)
A group of near strangers are trapped on a stationary train as they are attacked by werewolves.
Most of the action was fairly character based, victims became more likely as they leave the group or make choices which left room for development and opportunities to explore their backgrounds. The make-up wasn’t typical but it had an aesthetic which was effective enough, similarly there was a slight deviation from the lore.
They weren’t typical werewolves as shown by how most of the usual rules didn’t apply, however that begs the question why they needed to be werewolves at all since any wood-dwelling monster would have done well enough for their role, even the full moon didn’t turn out to be necessary so including it was just for the trope. Also, despite being lupine the creatures didn’t have very good tracking skills.
Though it seemed to be done on a low-ish budget, this made it more focused on the narrative and usually leads to more practical effects which are often more satisfying for a horror film like this. The setting varied just enough to stay isolated while giving the story momentum, though this was more effective when there was a realistic chance of escape.
The love interest turned out to be the character with the least explored history which didn’t make for a strong romance. There wasn’t always a clear focus on who the protagonist is and the engineering guy actually suited the role better because he was proactive, decent, and challenged the views of his archetype.
4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-
