I'm trying to count how many times Hiccup is captured/kidnapped throughout both series, the movies and the short films, so here's my criteria:
Any time he is unwillingly moved from one location to another by a dragon, viking or other character.
This includes any dragons picking him up and flying off somewhere, even if he is okay with it later.
This does not include when Toothless/his friends drag him off to show him something.
Any situation that prompted the dragon riders to rescue him.
Any plans that involved him giving himself up or joining up with a villain/antagonist.
This does not include the time he and Dagur were trapped on that island together.
Any time he is tied up and led somewhere or locked up/held in place with a guard.
Here is the list of situations I have compiled in (hopefully) chronological order:
HTTYD
Congratulations, no captures or kidnappings.
GIFT OF THE NIGHT FURY
When Meatlug (accidentally) brings Hiccup along to the Rookery.
RIDERS OF BERK
S1E6 - Hiccup gets taken to Dragon Island.
S1E16 - Hiccup is captured by the Outcasts on their island.
S1E19 - Alvin Captures Hiccup and Toothless at the "Isle of Night".
DEFENDERS OF BERK
S1E20 - Hiccup gives himself up to Dagur as part of his plan with Alvin.
RACE TO THE EDGE
S1E1 - the Dragon Riders get captured by Daugr on a hunter ship.
S1E7 -The twins put him in prison (this one's just here because I think it's funny).
S2E6 - The Dragon Hunters capture him.
S2E11 - The Dragon Riders get captured trying to save the Skrill.
S3E1 - Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters while trapped on an island with Dagur.
S3E8 - Hiccup and Toothless get caught in a Dragon Hunter Trap and are kidnapped and forced to participate in dragon fights.
S3E12 - Viggo captures all the Dragon Riders at the auction.
S3E13 - The Defenders of the Wing capture the Dragon Riders.
S4E3 - First Hiccup is caught by Amos and Berthel.
S4E3 - Then he's caught by Savage.
S4E3 - Then Krogan gets him after Throk saves him.
S4E3 - Ryker captures him for the tiniest bit right before the riders arrive.
S4E10 - Hiccup is caught with Ruffnut when he tries to rescue her from Viggo's trap. Unlike the other traps, he needs the other dragon riders to rescue them.
S5E2 - The Sandbuster captures Hiccup and Snotlout.
S6E8 - Viggo hands Hiccup over to Krogan as part of their plan.
HTTYD 2
Valka kidnaps Hiccup and Toothless.
HTTYD 3
Grimmel captures the dragon riders.
HOMECOMING
Once again, no captures of kidnappings
Up For Debate:
There are a few situations which technically fit the criteria, but I'm not sure if they fit considering the context of the show:
S5E5 - the riders are stuck on Vanaheim, guarded by the Sentinels. (Rtte)
S1E3 - This is a technicality, but when Hiccup joins up with Dagur to keep him away from the other dragons. (Dob)
EDIT: I forgot that even though my criteria says that the time Dagur and Hiccup are trapped on that island together (S3E1 of RTTE) doesn't count, because he is joining up with an (at the time) antagonist, there is a moment when Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters near the end of the episode.
After careful discussion (aka me ranting at my roommate) S4E10 of RTTE is also moving from "up for debate" to the official list. These changes are reflected above.
This brings our official count to 22 captures/kidnappings!
Honestly, the hardest part about this was finding the distinction between being captured or being trapped and what I wanted to count. When Hiccup isn't captured, he spends a lot of time in traps.

I’m going to say it.
I don’t think How to Train Your Dragon 3 was good.
Tumblr media
Not when you compare it to literally either of the other movies. Certainly not as a conclusion.
I mean, the first movie was about a boy who manages to understand a hostile dragon species and bring peace to two warring factions, which is a parallel for his relationship with his father. The second film was about how sometimes, peace has to be fought for, and Hiccup’s whole identity was in contrast with that—because while his mother ran from conflict and his father leapt at it too eagerly, he had always been the one to stop the fighting. Then he has to learn that the things we love are worth protecting.
And after he learns that humans and dragons can learn to understand each other and coexist—after he learns that it isn’t enough to run and hide or fight out of fear, but instead you must protect the things you care about—
After those two natural, powerful progressions are clearly worked for in the first two movies—
How to Train Your Dragon 3 comes along and says “‘No actually, sometimes all it takes is one madman whom you defeated with no loss of life to convince you that the things you care about should just crawl into a very pretty hiding hole, because you don’t feel like spending the rest of your life fighting for them.”
And I can say more. Below the break.
Because I’ve waited a long time to talk about this. Everybody around me was saying that the third HTTYD movie was sooo good, how could I not love it, what was my problem, they’re crying in the theater seats around me, they’re all moved, but nobody can tell me why. What makes HTTYD3 so good, STORY WISE? What makes the fact that Toothless, who is established as “Hiccup’s Other Half” and his character’s support, leaving, a good conclusion?
And it’s not just that my feelings were hurt at the idea of this iconic duo being split up in the finale.
It just doesn’t make any sense. Because the main thing that the whole series was built around was the adversity Hiccup and Toothless were always going to come up against, because they shouldn’t be friends. The whole first movie is like “dragons and Vikings hate and kill each other, there’s no way to get over this fear, nobody can be around Night Furies without dying,” and Hiccup and Toothless literally fly in the face of that. Then the whole second movie is “dragons either have to be left completely alone to themselves and their ways in the wild apart from man, or they have to be brutally enslaved as war machines under man’s boot” and then Hiccup and Toothless fly in the face of that. They stick together as their own, unique partnership, and it changes the world in HTTYD and in HTTYD2.
And then in the third movie, boom, Toothless suddenly doesn’t belong with Hiccup anymore? Suddenly it’s essential that he live completely separate, alone with “his own kind?” Suddenly it’s too hard and too dangerous to protect this dragon-Viking way of life that the whole first and second movie worked for?
I mean. They even abandon Berk. They fought so hard for Berk throughout three television series and two excellent movies.
And I get it. The idea is that, they left Berk because Berk is a people, so no matter where they go Berk is still alive, just like no matter where Toothless goes, his friendship with Hiccup is “still alive.” And that’s a fine theme, I guess, except it totally makes the first two movies seem worthless. It makes Hiccup’s mom seem right for abandoning her family and giving up on the idea that humans and dragons could ever live peacefully. According to HTTYD3, Hiccup and Toothless never should have interacted again after he cut Toothless free of the net. Because Toothless should’ve just…gone on to live with his own kind.
Oh except he couldn’t, because Hiccup knocked his tail fin off and Toothless needed Hiccup. Just like Hiccup was weird and innovative in a time of traditional brutish Vikings, and he, in his own way needed Toothless. So they couldn’t live among their own kind without one another.
And I see that HTTYD3 is trying to say “‘yes, they needed each other, but now they’ve grown up and the only thing left to learn is how to let go and move on.” But you know what, if you were going to tell me that, you shouldn’t have made the driving motivation for these characters to leave one another: “too many bad guys keep inevitably attacking us.”
You also shouldn’t have made the secondary driving motivation: “Toothless likes a pretty girl dragon and he can’t be with her and be with Hiccup because she’s Too Wild.™” Because guess what? The other thing that all of the previous canon content set up was that Hiccup can basically tame and befriend any wild dragon.
There are very few dragons, even in the TV show, that he cannot make friends with and live side-by-side with, and the ones that existed were basically just big, angry killing machines who presented themselves as way more threatening in mannerisms than the Light Fury does in the third movie. The Red Death eats other dragons; the Light Fury warns other dragons of traps. The Skrill tries to lightning-fry every human around it; the Light Fury only ever plasma blasts at humans that surprise her while she’s actively snooping around their camp.
I am willing to buy a story where a dragon needs to be free of his human master if he wants to have a future with his own kind, but you can’t do that if the dragon in the story is Toothless and the master in the story is Hiccup. Because those characters’ relationship was established as the future of their kind. Viking’s way forward was dragons—dragons’ way forward was Vikings.
And that brings up another bone of contention with me—the first reason for the finale split-up—what made Grimmel so terrifying that it convinced Hiccup to uproot his whole tribe from their ancestral home and eventually give up on fighting for his dragon/Viking way of life, and Toothless himself? Was it that Grimmel was a better strategist than Hiccup? Because Grimmel lost and died, so there’s no reason for that to remain the reason. Was it because Viggo had a whole army of people that were slapped together to hastily represent “the rest of the world” and a bunch of dragons—again, DRAGONS, Hiccup’s specialty—to attack them with? Because again, all of them lost. And Berk sacrificed nothing in the process, unless you count, like…stress.
And DON’T give me any crap about the epilogue. Don’t tell me “‘Oh, OP, you totally ignored the part at the end where Toothless and Hiccup’s new families visit each other, they’re not gone forever, they’re just Friends From Afar, living at peace, protecting the peace by staying apart.”
That is 1) a terrible cowardly step back from any emotional impact that the big goodbye and sense of sacrifice that living apart from each other should have given the audience, and 2) still doesn’t negate the fact that Hiccup and Toothless WERE fighting for their way of life, which was living together, since movie 1, and the fact is whether they visit each other or not they still don’t get to have that anymore. For no good reason. I could say more. I could talk about how silly I think a lot of the Light Fury plot is, how poorly set-up the Hidden World was as a conclusion piece, blah blah blah. But instead, I’ll just leave this quote from the end of How to Train Your Dragon 2, and you tell me how the logical conclusion to this quote was “let’s abandon our home and stuff our dragons in a hiding-hole because the enemies and armies that have never once actually defeated us are just too much hassle to keep fighting with.”
“This is Berk. A bit trampled and busted and covered in ice, but it's home. It's our home. Those who attacked us, are relentless, and crazy. But those who stopped them, oh, even more so! We may be small in numbers, but we stand for something bigger than anything the world can pin against us. We are the voice of peace, and bit by bit, we will change this world. You see, we have something they don't. Oh, sure, they have armies, and they have armadas. But we... we have... OUR DRAGONS!"

I get that THW was going for a sobering message of "sometimes you have to let people go" and "some friends can't stay forever", but it was hilariously unsuccessful.
It's still baffling to me, the amount of raving reviews calling it "the perfect ending".
Apart from the wild thematic inconsistencies, and the endless flaws with Hiccup's logic of "oh, yeah, I know that things have never before been this good for dragons, I know that Berk is living proof that even the most stubborn people can change their minds on dragons, I know that dragons thrive on companionship and love their humans, I know that good people exist, I know that I'm the instigator of a huge revolutionary period, butttttt..... because bad humans exist I'll lock away the entirety of the draconic population in a glorified underground cage, in the hopes that one day humans will stop being bad and learn to cooperate with the creatures that they question, or even forget, the existence of a measly decade after their disappearance. Magically.", this message plainly didn't fit.
Not just in a thematic context. I mean that it literally doesn't fit in this situation, and it doesn't fit the characters.
It doesn't even fit reality, because you have to let go of people for reasons. Some friends can't stay forever, for reasons.
Valid ones. Reasons like, you grew apart, you don't have shared interests anymore, they betrayed you in an unforgivable way, they're not good for you, they're not good to you, they died, etc etc.
Had any one of these happened? At any stage? The one thing you could, albeit pointlessly, argue is that they grew apart. That they outgrew each other.
Only that...they didn't? Did I miss something? Because Toothless flying away for, what, a day to spend some time with his love interest, is not outgrowing. Toothless finding romance does not mean that he and Hiccup grew apart.
And this isn't just about the Light Fury. I'm not discussing whether or not she's a good character (she isn't), and I'm not discussing whether or not she deserves Toothless (Ha, you're funny). Even if she were the absolute best, most perfect match for Toothless and a compelling character, it still wouldn't even remotely mean that he and Hiccup grew apart.
In fact, if you grow so far apart from your best friend that you can say goodbye to them forever, just because you found a new partner, then I really don't know what to tell you. (Except that you're probably not a good friend.)
Hiccup realizing that Toothless doesn't make him who he is, and doesn't define him, that he doesn't need Toothless in order to be someone, or even that he doesn't need Toothless at all, doesn't mean that he outgrew him. Not even slightly.
I mean, come on, I don't need the vast majority of people in my life. Arguably, I might not even need any of the people in my life. This doesn't mean I don't want them there.
This doesn't mean that I won't fight for them to stay right here, by my side.
Oh, look, how's that for a change? How about a movie where your friends refuse to leave you? Because that's what I want, and that's what How To Train Your Dragon deserved.
That's what Hiccup, and the rest of the Berkians, deserved. And that's what fit. That's what thematically fit, what fit reality, or at least the httyd reality, and what fit the characters themselves.
This movie treated the dragons as mindless pets, whereas in every other step of the way, they were treated as people.
Toothless isn't a just slobbery puppy.
Toothless is intelligent, curious, kind, understanding, funny, snarky and sarcastic, graceful, elusive, protective, loving, wary, and fucking loyal (plus much more).
I can't think of a character that has demonstrated as much loyalty and protectiveness as this guy.
And yet he was barely any of the aforementioned things in thw. He became unrecognizable.
All the dragons became unrecognizable, for no justifiable reason.
The final message shouldn't have been that your friends sometimes have to leave you, and that you have to let them go.
(The humans left the dragons just as much as the dragons left the humans btw)
It should've been that they'll fight tooth and nail to stay, even when the going gets tough, even when priorities shift, even when you tell them to go.
No matter how passionately you insist that caring for you is rotten work.
It's not to them.

Óen (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Okay, I've been egged on repeatedly by the wonderful @idontknowreallywhy to have a go at this, but I'm a little nervous cos I've never written any HTTYD fanfic ever and am a bit short on the canon in my head, so be kind as I make up a pile of stuff as I go along.
This is a Thunderbirds Are Go and How to Train Your Dragon crossover and I'm chewing fingernails..
Many thanks to both @onereyofstarlight and @idontknowreallywhy for their support in this insanity.
This little bit is just set up so don't expect much, but I hope you enjoy it. My apologies to Toothless.
-o-o-o-
Hiccup Haddock III was an idiot.
Toothless, the midnight black night fury he was currently clinging to, no doubt agreed.
“I’m sorry, bud, you were right. We should have gone back earlier.” The words were whipped from his mouth by the raging winds, but as always, Toothless heard him regardless.
A deep rumble in the dragon’s throat, vibrating against Hiccup’s thighs, indicated agreement on all fronts.
Hiccup should have known better. He’d seen the signs of changing weather but had ignored them, convincing himself they had a few moments longer. Unfortunately, said weather had disagreed and whipped up one of those sudden storms that had Berk locked down and huddled away.
Except Hiccup and Toothless were in the middle of the ocean with no protection.
He grit his teeth against the wind, desperately attempting to help Toothless manage their flight. At first, he had tried for home, his dragon friend whacking him with an ear flap in annoyance…always listen to your dragon…but the conditions had changed so abruptly for the worse, that now it was a case of desperately trying to keep aloft and not slammed into the ocean.
They had tried for height, Toothless as always knowing exactly how high they were, in an attempt to get above the storm. But the thunderheads went on forever and they reached as high as Hiccup could go - Toothless could always go higher, but he didn’t seem inclined to do it carrying a frozen friend on his back.
Toothless snarled and then attempted speed, trying to get out of the squall. But Thor had other ideas and along with several lightning strikes that had Hiccup’s hair standing on end, despite the wind and now the sleet, it soon became a struggle to stay in the sky at all, much less attain any directional speed.
And now they were in trouble.
Astrid was going to kill him if he managed to ever see her again.
Dad…
Dad, as always was the reason he was out here in the first place. Just another day where father and son just couldn’t see eye to eye. Another day that found Hiccup fleeing on Toothless and no doubt Stoick the Vast ranting in the smithy with Gobber.
Ice bit into his skin.
Beneath him, Toothless growled in alarm as they were suddenly swept sideways and down.
“Toothless!”
His friend’s wings struggled against the gale, but were snapped back, his growl turning into a wail of pain.
The wind took them and Hiccup could do little but cling to Toothless as they were swept into a dark and violent maelstrom.
-o-o-o-
It was all sensation after that. Toothless fighting beneath him. Pain. Freezing everything.
Screaming darkness.
This was it. His own stupidity, not listening to his dragon, and forever being fearful of his father and the future. It all had finally done him in.
Hiccup the Idiot.
Saved Berk, but was too stupid to save himself.
A sudden yank upwards against the wind startled him. But before he could react something grabbed him.
What?!
He was lifted from Toothless. A tug as his safety line pulled then fell slack as if snapped. No!
NO!
He struggled but it was too dark and whatever had him, had a solid grip. “Toothless!”
The wind raged but he wasn’t falling. He attempted to fight himself free, but his arms were pinned to his sides and he couldn’t…
“Toothless!”
The wind whipped the name from his mouth.
Toothless was gone. He had to be. His dragon couldn’t fly without him. His thoughts swirled like the wind battering his senses and he clenched his eyes shut in grief. Toothless!
“You’re going to be okay.”
The words were heavily accented and heard mostly through whatever he was held against, and he only heard them because the winds were dying.
The winds were dying.
Hiccup flung his eyes open. He was flying. But not on Toothless. His heart lurched.
He was on another dragon, black and silver danced beneath a dark grey sky. In the distance the sun managed to peek through over a bunch of islands fading into the grey sea.
“Toothless!”
“Óen has your dragon. Don’t be worried.” There was such surety in that voice, Hiccup had to believe.
“Who?”
“Scott o’ Clan O’Treasaigh and Óen. We’re here to rescue you.”

I'm thinking about How to Fight a Dragon's Fury and I cannot stop thinking about what it means that Fishlegs is Alvin's son.
It was a really big plot twist, but it's also so artistic. Alvin and Hiccup are mortal enemies, and their destinies are tangled together like wired earbuds in a jacket pocket. Hiccup was quite literally an accident according to fate, and he was only born because of Alvin, and he's the only one who can defeat Alvin in the end. Alvin caused his own downfall, stepped on the metaphorical butterfly that changed his own destiny.
And then you have Fishlegs. Alvin's son. Set adrift to sea and happening to end up on Berk. Happening to become best friends with Hiccup.
Where Alvin is constantly trying and failing to kill Hiccup, the boy in question would gladly die for his son. They'd do anything for each other. Hiccup risking his life to get a potato the Hysterics might not even have just to save Fishlegs from dying of dragon poison, and crying all the way home when he thought he failed? Fishlegs, who sank like a rock in water, teaching himself to swim in a moment of panic because Hiccup was drowning?
Not to mention their undying loyalty to each other-- Fishlegs being the only person not to turn his back on Hiccup when it was revealed he had the slavemark; not even Hiccup's own tribe stood by him, and Fishlegs gave him his lobster necklace, which he held in very high reverence and associated with his family, he gave that to Hiccup. And when Fishlegs had been taken to the Amber Slavelands, Hiccup fought tooth and nail to find and rescue him.
It's one thing to mess up destiny one time. Alvin not giving the hearts stone to Valhallarama directly caused Hiccup to be born, his arch nemesis. But Alvin also tricked Termagant, and messed with fate a second time.
And then Fishlegs found his way to Hiccup, like all lost things do.

----------
Up until a few weeks ago, Berk looked at Hiccup very differently than they do now.
He was the runt of the litter. Though born first that year way back when he was also the smallest. Both physically and height-wise he's even smaller than the girls his age.
As the chief's son, he didn't really live up to the title of heir. He seemed to skirt as many responsibilities as he could and couldn't even show up to his job on time.
He stood out like a sore thumb, his strange thoughts and ideas made everyone around him uncomfortable. It always made them wonder what was going on in that boy’s head.
They were a warrior tribe fighting in a war against dragons, but this boy could barely lift up a bundle of swords and he was useless in battle. He would run rather than stand his ground. And when his father feared the day he would ever have to face a real fight, he was rightfully scared that Hiccup would meet his untimely demise very quickly.
Simply put; the boy was useless. An embarrassment. They all knew it and Hiccup never did anything in his life to disprove that.
Until dragon training began and Hiccup seemed to have a real knack for dragons. He became popular, going from that embarrassment to the top student and even got himself the final test to prove himself a champion; the honor of killing a Monstrous Nightmare.
That didn't happen, though. Instead his secret dragon friend, Toothless was outed and he got disowned. It was an exchange done in private, but everyone could tell from the look on Stoick's face, the one of devastation, regret, but ultimately decisive. This caused a string of events that led the Vikings of Berk to find Dragon Island and the nest within, which was a thing they tried to find long before Stoick was even born.
The dragons inside were numerous, in the hundreds, but the big boss of them all- a queen if you will- was almost as big as the mountain she resided in. Not even an army consisting of every able man and woman of the village of Berk and every catapult in their arsenal would be enough to slay a dragon of this size.
They were doomed, fated to be squashed and eaten. Then Hiccup and his Night Fury friend came along and that's when their opinion of the boy changed.
"He's a hero!" They sang his praises after the battle.
"He battled the biggest dragon in Viking history and won!"
He'd lost a leg after the ordeal, he'd remained in a death-like sleep for a little while. Some feared he would never awaken, others assumed someone capable of such tremendous feats would be just fine.
Then he woke up and Berk's opinion of the boy changed a third time.
Because now there's something... off... about him.
He's a smallish Viking tailed constantly by the Offspring of Lightning and Death Itself, who follows him as if he's the boy's shadow. Toothless is quite protective, nearly losing his human friend has taught him how much he doesn't want to lose him. There's something ominous about a young boy whose shadow constantly follows your every move.
When you see him out and about, there's this air of tiredness about him. It makes sense, according to Stoick, the boy barely sleeps. Night terrors are keeping him up at night. Terrible dreams about being burned alive that are so vivid he's said to wake up soaked in sweat and skin sensitive from an imaginary fire.
His lost leg has been a difficult adjustment. It's been a long and painful recovery, filled with all the tiny nuisances all the way up to the big problems. From slipping on patches of ice with his pegleg to excruciating pain confining him to his bed.
Then there are the responsibilities befitting the Hero of Berk, their Hope and their Pride. He's single-handedly responsible for the integration of every dragon that followed them home after the killing of the Red Death, the late tyrannical queen of the nest. There are over a hundred of them, it's a big responsibility for a boy dealing with the trauma of a battle, the loss of a leg, and his entire life being turned upside down. From the embarrassment of the village to their pride, it’s a strange and sudden change of heart.
It's much for an adult to deal with, let alone a young boy Hiccup's age, a teen.
So maybe that's why he's not just tired all the time, but angry as well.
It's not that he's throwing tantrums, it's not that he's snapping or shouting at random. There's just this undertone that people are never sure is really there until they hear someone else mention it. It's that his sass and sarcasm have a bite to it that wasn't there before. It's those moments in which he regards you with a silent seething. The anger is in the clenching of his teeth, the tension in his shoulders, the balling of his fists, in his eyes.
And everytime he's praised for his heroism, when his father's line "all we needed was a little bit more of Hiccup" is repeated back to him again, when his work with the dragons is questioned; that anger grows just a little bit more.
Hiccup is resentful.
Because his act of heroism stole his sleep and peace of mind, his innocence. He's a leg short and adjusting to it has been both arduous and painful. Each time someone is in need of his "Hiccupness ," he's reminded of the fact that it was not wanted before he lost all these things, before he proved to everyone that he's allowed to exist as well. And with every sleepless night, with every day spent confined to his bed, with every tumble into a pool of mud because of his pegleg, that resentment grows just a little bit more.
He didn't have to lose his leg. He didn't have to lose whatever little bit of childhood he could've still been holding onto prior to the Red Death. He didn’t need to know what it felt like to be burned alive. But he did and now he's suddenly accepted. All it took was for him to lose almost everything. But hey! At least the disownment was renounced.
Now can the rest of Berk tell? Does the baker read his mind when he and Toothless come for that day's bread? When the fisherman and his wife come to him with the complaint that a thunder of Terrible Terrors ate their latest catch. Do they see what he mourns? When a drunken guest at the Great Hall swings a friendly arm around him only to pull away when Toothless gives him an unfriendly glare. Does he just see the dragon's agitation or the boy's pleas to be left alone that triggered it? Or is it only the growing outer layer of anger that they all see? That slight unsettling feeling of looking at a boy who was once thought useless at worst and harmless at best.
And as for his father, he's still too over the moon with his son's accomplishments to see the growing darkness in the boy's heart, the illness in his mind. He's blind to what his village sees. Gobber sees it, but even he isn't sure how to tell Stoick.
What doesn't help either is Hiccup's connection with dragons. Because as that to the Vikings of Berk fades- with all but his five friends and fathers- the one with the dragons grows ever stronger. They're all he ever wants to surround himself with and they can hardly leave him alone.
So Berk leaves Hiccup be. They don't know what he's turning into. Will he remain their hero or become something else? All they can do is look away and pretend they don't see the resentment in the boy's eyes.

Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Tumblr media
Alright it's time to out myself in front of the entire HTTYD tumblr fandom. I like this movie. A lot. Ok? Like I think its really fucking great and I will not deny that. Is it as good as the first two entries in this franchise? No, but it's still damn solid in its own right. So let's get into it.
Tumblr media
We pick up a year after the last movie, with the arrival of another new threat to Berk, the "Night Fury killer" Grimmel the Grisley. To protect his people and their dragons, Hiccup moves the entire tribe to a new island while in search for the Hidden World, an unreachable utopia for all dragonkind. Meanwhile, Toothless is allured by the arrival of a new, mysterious female dragon, the Light Fury, which complicates matters even further as Hiccup begins to worry that he and Toothless are growing apart.
Tumblr media
So yeah still a pretty good plot, though not as solidly cohesive as the first two. Still, I enjoy the ride here a lot; we still get a lot of great scenes of the riders fighting their foes, lots of great flying scenes (especially that one between Toothless and the Light Fury, man that scene is just gorgeous), lots of action and strangely enough, a bit more of a focus on humor here than usual? I mean it's ok, but a little strange given this is the final entry in the franchise and the stakes are supposed to be higher than ever.
Tumblr media
Speaking of stakes, let's talk about that. Grimmel is by in large the only real new character here (aside from the Light Fury I guess, and she's fine, I don't understand the hate towards her design, I think she's cute). And he is... probably the lamest fuckin villain in this franchise, there I said it. He's just... some dude. He's nowhere near as unhinged and intimidating as Drago, nowhere near as smart or interesting or even just fun to watch as any of the villains in the HTTYD shows, he's just... idk man, a really boring villain. Certainly not what I think the "ultimate" challenge for a protagonist as well developed and interesting as Hiccup should be imo.
Tumblr media
I know there are plenty of complains thrown around about this movie, the other riders are poorly-characterized, Grimmel is a lame villain (as I just said, I agree with that one), and of course, it's biggest controversy, it's ending. But here's my take on the ending. I think it's actually pretty bold of them to have the dragons leave? Like yes, there is a heavy sense of finality to it, but that's sort of the point. There's a massive change to the status quo, it feels like a genuine ending with little in the way of Dreamworks doing what they always fucking do in trying to bait any unecessary sequels. And then of course, there's the epilogue, which may be one of my favorite scenes in the entire franchise. I literally cannot watch it without crying, I'm such a fucking wreck for this boy and his dragon oh my god.
Tumblr media
As usual, visually and audibly, this movie is absolutely wonderful. The animation here is especially impressive, the lighting took my breath away in some spots with just how realistic some of it looked, while still maintaining the series' usual style. The Hidden World especially, we don't see it for very long, but it is so damn pretty to look at. The music is, of course, also absolutely lovely, once again drawing on familiar themes from throughout the series to send it off one last time.
Tumblr media
There's lots of other little things I love about this movie too, like the flashbacks to Stoick and Hiccup when Hiccup was little (I cry), any cute Hicstrid moments, especially the wedding (I cry), Toothless being an absolute mess while trying to impress the Light Fury (I die laughing), just... god, it's more How to Train Your Dragon, man, I fucking love this franchise, how the hell can I possibly hate this movie when there's still so much of what I love about the first two in here?
I do understand, this movie is flawed in some pretty big ways. And yet... it's still so beautiful all the same. I adore it, even if others don't, and I think that's ok? We can all enjoy different things and I just so happen to enjoy this. No, it's certainly not the best this series can do, and maybe the HTTYD franchise does deserve a better conclusion. But for what we got, well... I think it's pretty damn great all the same.
Overall Rating: 9/10
Verdict: How to get your dragon some rizz bc gottdamn he needs some

Thor x Female Hiccup Reader
In all of Valhalla, the Norse Gods knew of Dragons. How there were different species, with different attributes and abilities. The Norse knew how dangerous Dragons were, they either avoided them or killed them so, they didn’t attack villages.
But that changed when they saw someone flying on a Dragon. Even more so, a Viking. Those of the Norse Pantheon knew how much Vikings hated Dragons and normally exterminated them on sight. So, to see a Viking riding on the back of a dragon was a shock.
When questioned about it, the Viking said that the heir to his tribe showed them that Dragons weren’t vicious beasts, that they could be trained. When asked about who the heir was, all they said was they rode on the back of a Night Fury.
As time went on more and more Vikings were started being seen on the backs of Dragons and not attacking each other.
It had been months later, when the Gods finally met the Dragon Rider who started it all.
Thor:
Thor met you by accident, he was creating a lightning storm. And because it was so cloudy, Thor didn’t realize he hit something until a roar and shriek sounded off. Startling him that he saw something black crash into the forest.
Normally Thor wasn’t the type to indulge in his curiosities, but something inside of him made him check it out.
After a few minutes of searching, did he find what had fallen from the sky. It was a big mass of black scales, that he instantly knew that it was a Night Fury.
The God tried to be quiet to get a better look at the creature, but he wasn’t as quiet as he thought, because the Night Fury’s head suddenly snapped towards the God of Thunder. It’s cat-like green eyes staring into his own.
Thor looked at the Dragon and noticed the what looked like a saddle on it’s back and it looked like it was missing a tail fin. He tensed when he heard the beast growl.
He was getting ready to fight when a voice cried out “Toothless!” and out of nowhere, a young woman ran in front of the Night Fury – ‘Toothless’ Thor’s mind supplied – she took out a sword, the blade catching on fire. Ready to protect the Dragon behind her.
And that was how the God of Thunder, met the Dragon Master.
After that encounter, the two of you became good friends. After the mishap with Thor accidentally striking the both you and Toothless to the ground, you guys got along quite well. Even Toothless got along well with him (even if the larger male gave him extra fish when you weren’t looking).
You told him how you came across Toothless, how you lost your leg to the Red Death. How hard you worked for Vikings and Dragons to co-exist, and protecting Dragons from those who hunt dragons. Thor wouldn’t say it out loud but he admired, that about you, how you always strived to do the right thing and protecting others.
It was one of the reasons why he fell in love with you.
While you weren’t like the other Vikings, he wouldn’t have you any other way.

How To Betray A Dragon's Hero & How To Fight A Dragon's Fury Book Review
Part of #Reddie's liveblog from Dec 2021 - Oct 2023
Wow you guys I almost took 2 years I'm so sorry pfffft XD
As I said before, I think it makes the most sense to scream about Book 11 & 12 together because they only take place over a span of about 48 hours. Also I will not be talking about any quotes. Feel free to send me your favorite sayings in an ask though!!!!!
Let's get to it!!! Lean back and listen as I recall...
burning forests. The world being a wasteland of fire and ash. And Hiccup being at the center of it. Gosh.
They were incredibly stupid to let Snotlout into their secret hideout... at least blindfold him or something so he can't give the location away should he double-cross them???
I like those ambiguous characters who don't choose to identify themselves with any side of a war... it was a smart explanation of Snotlout to give about why he didn't take the Dragonmark. The more I think about it, the more suspicious it becomes to demand of anyone to take a literal tattoo on their body in support of whatever group. How quickly such a symbol's meaning can change depending on what people currently associate with it, the books have shown. To force people to distinguish themselves physically for or against a highly political opinion is...shady at best O_O but of course, this doesn't help to make Snotlout believable in the moment. As I've read the Return of the Thief recently, I side with the diplomatic strength of non-inked folk Eugenides cough cough, although it makes them dangerous, hated outsiders and able to play multiples angles as well.
The Wodensfang's "betrayal" was a deep stab into my chest. Hiccup had already gone through so much, and the Wodensfang was one of his most trusted advisors - a member of his own party. The Wodensfang literally carried the lives of three kids and so much more with his actions. It doesn't matter that the dragon didn't betray Hiccup in the end - the very fact that he went so low to even TALK about betrayal with Furious was heartbreaking. The Wodensfang, himself thoroughly scarred by the break of trust, should not have played with Hiccup's trust as if it were an asset to be sold or traded. At some point, when you've seen a person's heart, you have to believe them. And once you understand that most errors and most abandonment happens out of fear and not out of outright disloyalty, it gets easier to forgive.
It brings me a lot of joy to think about the cave scene again... that was awesome. What a victory!! I love returning to this scene. The setting of a city behind a waterfall was epic. It's always great to have explosions and mayhem. And Hiccup's little sailboat escapes! Annnd this is where Snotlout finally realizes the downside of being the traitor: Now he's hated and mistrusted by all sides.
The final confrontation with Snotlout was nothing short of awesome. His reasoning was sound - to be dethroned by the birth order and then additionally discovering that the guy doesn't even seem to be worth it... that does some damage. I'm glad they reconciled!
Snotlout taking Hiccup's clothes hnnnghhh... it was a noble deed, but tbh it was hard to believe he died. Because book!logic happens to be very random and plot-subservient... if Cressida had written any more Httyd books, Snotlout would have been 'resurrected' in one of them, I'm sure.
So Hiccup's plans are foiled by the weather, huh?? Convenient lol.
The glorious despair as Hiccup washes up on that shore. Fantastic.
That concludes Book 11.

When this movie first came out, I was in my senior year in high school. Everyone thought that this would be my favorite movie ever of all time. I have a well-known Thing about dragons.
It’s not my favorite movie.
It is pretty darn good, though.
Loosely based on books by Cressida Cowell, How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of Hiccup, a young viking boy in the village of Berk, a place often beset by dragon attacks. Hiccup, despite being the son of Berk’s chieftain, is not much of a warrior. He does want to make his dad proud, though, and so he invents a weapon to shoot down the rarest and most deadly type of dragon they know, a Night Fury. But when he actually manages to catch one, he ends up befriending the dragon instead of killing it. And in the process of befriending the Night Fury, whom he names ‘Toothless’ (on account of being able to retract his teeth), Hiccup learns more about dragon behavior than anyone else in Berk.
Let’s step right out the gate by saying that Toothless is awesome. He’s both awesome and lovable-looking. They purposefully designed him so he had some catlike features, so he doesn’t act just like a large lizard. That’s a thing that I think many people designing dragons trip up on–they don’t think about how a dragon might actually act as an animal in the wild. I like the idea of dragons as animals, and studying how they behave and interact with their habitats. Seeing that in a family film was delightful.
[Okay, yes, Toothless acts way nicer than a wild animal would realistically be, but this movie is made with children in mind. I can get over it. It at least acknowledges that these wild animals can be dangerous, which is more than a lot of movies with children in mind can do with large animals. Look at Camp Cretaceous, for instance, which treats large herbivores like friendly animals.]
I’m very fond of how they have a variety of dragons in the movie. Many fantasy settings try to have it so that there is only one type of dragon; seeing more than one, multiple types, that first different ideas of what a dragon could be–that’s fantastic! Go nuts with those dragon designs! I love to see it!
Hiccup’s a very good family film protagonist! Were we having the conversation about toxic masculinity back in 2010? I don’t know. Regardless, it is cool, if not entirely unique, that we had a protagonist from a hyper masculine/aggressive society that isn’t a hardcore warrior, and his character arc doesn’t get him there. It’s about using his own character strengths, developing them without changing who he is at his core (a bit like Kung Fu Panda in that way!).
And his leg! Spoiler alert: but at the end of the movie, in the final fight, he loses his leg. The stakes here are real. Sure, we don’t see a lot of death and violence, we’re told that dragons and vikings have been killing each other for years. It would be too easy to leave it like that, but the movie shows that bad things can happen to our characters when they’re in danger, and I respect it for doing that.
We should talk about Astrid. I think some people thought that she didn’t work so well as a love interest because she isn’t developed enough. I think as a secondary character she has enough development, especially because she isn’t, at the end of the film, throwing herself into the protagonist’s arms. She’s coming around to him, and she’s impressed by what Hiccup’s accomplished (he is, as she brings up, the first viking to ride a dragon). In short, yes, she could have done with more development, though I think her role in the movie is fine as it is.
[Especially because I know she has more to do in the following movies.]
I have long had some questions about the final boss dragon? Running with the idea that dragons are just animals, albeit surprisingly intelligent ones, the concept of one dragon being ‘the Bad One’ doesn’t really hold up? Like, yeah, dragons are fine, except that one bad one making them be bad? I suppose either way, it makes sense that regardless of whether or  not the dragon is morally good or evil, it’s posing a threat to the people of Berk, so they’re justified in taking it down. I think some discussion of this would have been warranted, though.
Anyhow! This is a superb dragon movie! And even if it’s nothing like the book, it’s an excellent family film. I can see why this became one of Dreamworks’s flagship movie serieses. It’s pretty darn good, and if you like family films, or if you love dragons as I do, you should definitely check it out.

(This post is me imagining a better version of thw for 674 words)
You know what? The worst part about the "set the dragons free" finale is that it could've feel earned if both second and third movie choose to show us how difficult was the world if they were always fighting, not along dragons, but for the dragons.
It could have been better if we watched Hiccup and the berkians often taking wrong decisions and making mistakes for the sake of the dragons. If we had Hiccup having to choose between his friends and the dragons. If we watched him realized how, even with all he had accomplished, there is no way he could be the one to bring peace between vikings and dragons because vikings weren't ready.
Maybe the moment where Hiccup realizes that the dragons are safer in the Hidden world would be more satisfying if we had already watched both dragons and people be lost to a war, if we had watch a war in the first place. If it's not a goodbye but a "we'll do our best until we can be together again, because I will move heaven and sea to be together and safe again"
Hiccup's character development would be so much greater if instead of having him as codependent we had him as stubborn, always choosing to fight a fight he cannot win, not realising that because he has won so many before. He could realize that he's only leading not only his people but their dragons to destruction a moment before losing everything. He could have an arc about learning when to stop fighting, not because he submits but because he knows it's the best thing to do and to make it have sense.
As for Toothless, he could start up by being an actual character instead of a horny dog. You know, struggling, facing tough decisions, choosing between real family and found family.
(It would've been great if we watched some real night furies so I'm adding that to the list).
And then we got the homewrecker the Light Fury. I know she could be so much interesting if only her focus was on how hurt she and many other dragons were because on humans and how tired they are from fighting. Not on a only romantic focus, I want drama.
You know what would be even more dramatic??? Hiccup not freeing the dragons after rescuing them, instead training them so they can help the fight. I mean, he would do it with the kindest intentions but the villain™ would remark how similar it is to what Drago did. There you go, I wrote you a moral dilemma, you're welcome.
And. Do. You. Know. What. Could. Have. Been. Great? If, in the end, Toothless was the one who decides not to leave/to come back because he's a free dragon and he chooses to fight both for real family as for his other half found family viking best friend. Because maybe they will never win the war but they can make a little difference. And a lot of little differences will eventually create a change, hopefully one for the better.
(I don't have ideas for the villain™ but I know that Grimmel is out of the question. The only good thing that came with him was the venomcup au)
I know that I just described a totally different movie with different themes and different tone than what thw is, but all these are elements that the movie vaguely shows. Thw is so focused on the friendship theme that it forgots the characters have to be characters without it too, and is so occupied telling us the Most Obvious Thing Ever™ that we can't focus on the subtext.
Most of the things I just wrote are on the movie (or on the books, you know, the base material the writers are supposedly homaging), they're simply not part of the centric plot and it is so unfair: The final movie deserved better, the fans deserved better and the one and only homage to the books in it's movie adaptation deserved so much better.

Immortal Hiccup au pt 1 and 2
Hiccup was born about 1000 years before the events of his original birth. Having a power to change his age and appearance to suit what is better in his opinion.
He has been around dragons for most of his time on this earth, they had much more time to be on earth then humans did. Hiccup learnt how to understand most dragons within his first 50 years on earth since they had seen him as something not so human which is fair in his opinion. He learnt that dragons could live up to Thor knows how long due to hearing that a dragon has been alive since what the dragons called the giant lizard era. Though sadly that dragon is not around anymore due to humans, a shame really he would of loved to know more about the giant lizard era. (Dragons in this au are cousins to what would later become dinosaurs and todays mammals and reptiles)
Hiccup managed to be on berk during the time his cannon mother was supposed to give birth in the form of a 5 year old due to him preferring this form. Anyways Valka gave birth to a girl that looks like Stoick.
5 years have passed and hiccup finds Berk fascinating because of everything that has happened to the villagers and the village. So he made the woods his home.
Hiccup decided to go into the village one day since he was bored and didn’t want to explore the forest since he knows it all to well now. He walked into the village in his 5 year old form getting a few stares from people until he bumps into Stoick, now to Stoick Hiccup looks a lot like valka but with his own eye colour. Being that this was really weird to the chief he asked hiccup who’s child he was. Hiccup not having parents for over 900+ years had said he had none, Stoick told hiccup to follow him and hiccup followed without questions due to still being bored.
Stoick brought Hiccup to his house to let Valka see him. Valka was shocked seeing a boy who looked her daughters age that looked nearly the same as her but with freckles and Stoicks eyes.
After the shock died down Valka asked if hiccup had parents, but hiccup gave her the same answer as he had given Stoick before.
Skip 10 years to cannon events Hiccup is a haddock now and Valka left when she was carried off by a raid 9 years prior.
I will leave this chapter here as to have abit more suspense for chapter two :)
————————————————————————
Chapter 2
The night was the one he would shoot Toothless down on. Being nearly the same as cannon but the difference being Hiccup could understand Toothless. Skip to when hiccup finds Toothless in the cove after the first meet.
“A new dragon type” Hiccup whispered to himself slightly to loud gaining the dragons attention. He had decided to give Toothless the fish he brought for him. Still being giddy about a new dragon type hiccup watches toothless for the day after the fish thing in the original movie.
Skip to right after the fight with the red death, due to not needing to change much about anything else for the plot.
They are sitting in hiccups room talking about things when hiccup asks toothless about basic information like what toothlesses age is and if he has a mate since it’s completely slipped hiccups mind to ask before.
“I’m not a very seasoned night fury age wise I guess, I mean I’m only something like 1100 years old” Toothless explained to hiccup with a smile.
“So what about you how old are you Hiccup?”
Not expecting anything substantial for a human he was suprized.
“Funny thing Toothless i myself am about 1000 years old due to being immortal” Suprize fading Toothless is now hellbent on knowing more about his human.
So this is the end of the chapter. I’m thinking of making this full on Toothcup instead of just having them as best friends. Plus I enjoy the ship.

To Belong : The End
Tumblr media
She was the weird foreign girl, he was the most useless Viking in the history of Berk. Together they were just Leandra and Hiccup. Two best friends who searched for their place in the world. Would their search for it unite or separate them?
Tumblr media
After thinking long and hard I decided to finish Leandra and Starchaser's story.
Leandra in particular became a character I just can’t see that she ever would get back to Berk to be with Hiccup after he choose Astrid and Berk over her.
For her, it’s clear that she will always be second best to him and she deserves better.
So this is the final chapter of Leandra and Starchaser's story, I will delete My War and Together, we map the world.
I hope you enjoy the Epilogue ^^
Tumblr media
Epilogue: The Last Rider and her dragon
30 years later……
In a little village in China near the Silk Road…
Careful to not wake up her beloved wife Xia, Leandra stood up from their shared bedroll.
Xia just mumbled something, rolling over where Leandra had lied a few seconds ago, enjoying the warmth.
The Spanish woman couldn’t help but smile. Xia was still so cute like when they had met as twenty-somethings.
In the corner of the bedroom, her darling Night Fury Starchaser slowly woke up and greeted her with a smile.
Starchser wasn’t as young as she was once, her black scales, looked more smoky-black and her golden eyes had darkened with age.
Leandra gently stroked Starchaser's head, feeling grateful for the dragon's companionship all these years. She knew that Xia loved the Night Fury just as much as she did, and it was one of the things that brought them together in the first place.
The black-haired woman tiptoed out of their small bedroom, making her way to the kitchen to start breakfast. She couldn't wait to surprise Xia with her favourite dish, huevos rancheros, her version.
As she cooked, she thought back on all the memories they had made together - travelling the world, adopting children, and building a life filled with love and adventure.
Despite the challenges they had faced as a same-sex couple in some places they had visited, Leandra knew that Xia was worth fighting for. She was her soulmate and best friend, and nothing could ever change that.
As she placed the hot plate of food on their small table, Xia appeared in the doorway with a sleepy smile on her face. "Good morning," she yawned.
"Good morning my love," Leandra replied with a grin. "I made your favourite."
Xia's eyes lit up at the sight of huevos rancheros. "You're amazing," she said before planting a soft kiss on Leandra's lips.
They sat down to eat breakfast together, enjoying each other's company. Starchaser soon joined them and ate her basket full of fish.
After that Leandra and Xia took their morning flight with Starchaser to enjoy the thrill.
Neither of the women would get ever tired of this feeling.
Sadly they couldn’t just keep flying like once they were young, they had responsibility.
Today was market day in their little village and Xia turned to buy the groceries they needed.
With both a kiss for the Spanish woman and dragon, she made her way there, while Leandra and Starchaser worked on their rice field.
When the black-haired woman was once a young girl she never thought that one day she would love such a simple life and yet here she was.
Humming a small melody she worked on the rice field when suddenly she heard Starchaser growling.
Confused Leandra looked up.
Starchaser was growling at a young man. He was clothed like a traveller and had the same tan skin as herself, black short hair and blue eyes.
Something about them was familiar...
“Leandra Alvarez?”, he asked her in perfect norse. Leandra felt how her heart began to race...no could it be possible? “And that dragon must be Starchaser...I’m Ulf Alvarez.”
The basket where she had put the rice fell from her hands as tears shot into her eyes.
“Ulfi, my little brother!”, she chocked out. “You are all grown up!”
Without a word, the siblings hugged each other tight. Leandra noted how tall Ulf was. Taller than their father.
“I wished so long to meet you big sister!”, cried Ulf. “The letter you left behind wasn’t much and by Odin, you were hard to track down.”
“I travelled the world. Seems like you did the same.”, she cried, kissing his cheeks.
They weren’t the squishy baby cheeks but had stubble.
God, her Ulf really was here and all grown up!
Even Starchaser seemed to recognize him and licked his cheeks, which made Ulf laugh happily.
It was now early evening and the Alvarez siblings were seated at the little veranda of Xia and Leandra's home.
Xia was so nice to cook dinner, while they cached up, Starchaser was flying alone a big round over the property.
“I still can’t believe that there is one dragon left.”, mussed Ulf and took a sip from the rice win Xia and Leandra made. “We all thought...well that any dragon in the world heard Toothless command.”
Leandra snorted.
“Starchaser was once his mate, in the relationship she was the Alpha, she would have never listened to him...also I think she loved me more and rather stay here with me than go...what did you call it? The Hidden World?”
Ulf nodded.
Both siblings took each a sip of their rice wine, gathering their thoughts.
“So Hiccup married Astrid?”, couldn’t help Leandra but ask.
Xia may be her soulmate, her one true love, yet Hiccup had been her first love.
You never quite forgot your first love. Especially if it had hurt you so bad.
Nervously Ulf rubbed his neck.
“Yeah...they have two kids, Zephyr, their oldest girl, and Nuffink, a boy.”, told her Ulf.
The black-haired woman pursed her lips and then nodded slowly.
Well, it didn’t surprise her, even if one part of her, the one who still was 16 and in love with Hiccup cried out.
Hiccup had made long ago his decision. When he had the chance to run away with her and chose to follow after Astrid to make her see reason.
Tzz.
“Are they happy?”
“I think so...but Dad told me, that Hiccup had said to him on his wedding day if you would appear suddenly he would cancel the wedding.”
“Really?”
“Whatever you wrote in the letter for Hiccup made him hope till last that you would come back to Berk...but I think he made finally his peace now.”
“It’s better so, I have a wife that I love very much and a bunch of little brats I love.”
This made Ulf laugh and squeezed her free hand.
“Again, tell me where all my nieces and nephews are?”
After dinner, Leandra and Ulf talked late into the night, catching up on all the years they had missed.
Xia listened to their stories, occasionally interjecting with a question or comment.
Starchaser eventually returned from her flight, settling herself next to Leandra as they chatted.
As the night grew darker, Leandra realized that she was grateful for this unexpected reunion with her brother. She had missed him more than she had realized and was glad that he had found his way back to her.
The next morning, Ulf said his goodbyes and promised to keep in touch. Leandra watched as he disappeared down the road, feeling a sense of loss mixed with happiness at having seen him again.
As she turned back towards their home, Xia wrapped her arms around Leandra's waist and rested her head on her shoulder. "I'm so happy you got to see your brother," she whispered.
Leandra smiled, feeling content and loved.
She knew that life would continue to bring surprises and challenges, but as long as she had Xia by her side and Starchaser in their lives, she could face anything.

Hey! Your awesome half-brothers au finally got me to read the httyd books (I’m halfway through book six as I write this). In the films, the war between humans and dragons is the main conflict of the first movie, and Hiccup ending that war is very significant to his character. In the books, humans and dragons start off as tentative allies (though it sounds like that might change as the series goes on?) and Hiccup’s conflicts are of a very different nature. Taking that into account, how do you think both Hiccups in your au met and trained their Toothless’s? In which order are you imagining it, and how did their dragons wind up with the same name?
Tumblr media
Omg I'm so happy to hear my au got you into the books!! Also, very good question!!
So for the relationship between humans and dragons, I decided to make it so that the events from 100 years ago, when Grimbeard killed Hiccup the Second, dragons and humans split up for good, both feeling threatened by the other. Grimbeard gave up his kingdom and scattered the Lost Things as usual, but the relationship between humans and dragons has been hostile ever since; With dragons killing humans and stealing their livestock while humans kill dragons and use their hides as firesuits. But neither species will actively go looking for a fight without good reason to. The war between Berk and the Red Death's flock is stoked exclusively by the Red Death, and has been going on ever since Stoick was a little boy.
When the Hiccups defeat the Red Death, they rescue the flock, and are able to befriend them, making them the first and only humans to befriend dragons in 100 years. They adopt the flock onto Berk and integrate them into viking society. (These dragons are not seen as pets; that is to say they can feed themselves, they're not kept in kennels, and don't get ordered around. They do see Berk as part of their flock now, so they'll protect Berk like warriors of the tribe and allow the other warriors to ride them.)
When the Hiccups first meet their Toothlesses, they both have extremely different reactions. Elder has a lot of responsibility placed on him as the heir to Berk. There are a lot of eyes on him, and he feels extreme longing for his father and his tribe's approval, so he's gotten rather desperate to kill a dragon. Meanwhile Younger is more of a shadow, feeling forgotten and overlooked in his own tribe, and hopes to prove himself important by stopping the fighting between humans and dragons-- but in a peaceful way, even going so far as to learn the dragons' language.
Elder went looking for the night fury, and Younger stumbled across the terror while looking for his brother. While Elder warred with himself whether or not to kill the night fury, Younger's decision was immediate, and cut the dragon down.
Tumblr media
They don't immediately tell each other about what they did when they get home that night. When Elder goes out to befriend his night fury later, Younger happens to do the same for his terror, which has been hanging around near the village trying to eat the sheep (and failing).
They name their Toothlesses at exactly the same time!
Tumblr media
And although it took time and patience for Elder to gain the trust of Big Toothless, Little Toothless decided, after Younger gave him a fish, that Younger is now his Mother and Younger is never going to get rid of him ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever <33
Tumblr media
That includes leaving Little Tooth alone for 2.5 seconds at any given time, so Little Tooth hides in Younger's waistcoat always, even while Younger is in his village.
As you can imagine, this leads to Elder finding out about Little Tooth pretty quickly.
But once Elder shows Younger Big Tooth in the cove, all three of them start helping Big Tooth to fly again! Younger can give Elder his two cents on the tail, how to fly, and also communicating what little dragonese Big Tooth will speak (which really isn't much). Meanwhile Little Tooth is here to be So Important and Look Cute. <3

For the most part, my AU of HTTYD: The Hidden World follows the canon story, but with a few minor adjustments that I feel improve it. For starters, Light Furies in my AU look like this:
Tumblr media
Originally my Light Fury redesign looked more like the canon design but with better proportions. However, I wanted my Light Fury to feel more like her own character with her own distinct personality. I wanted her to be different than the canon, so I completely overhauled her design. She also has, you know, an actual personality instead of just being a plot device.
As for the story itself, in order to avoid this post becoming an essay, I’ll just go over a few key points.
Night Furies aren’t extinct and instead are critically endangered. They went into hiding in the Hidden World when they realized they were being hunted. Grimmel believes that he has completely eradicated them and has moved on to slaughtering Light Furies next.
Toothless is the alpha of the dragons on Berk, not the king of all dragons. I felt that made him too overpowered.
Speaking of Toothless, I imagine him to look slightly different in my AU. I picture him looking more consistent with the character models from the previous two films. In other words, his brow ridge isn’t as exaggerated like in the third movie (which also means that his head is a little less blocky in my AU) and his eyes aren’t as round and smushed together. His personality is also more consistent with the previous movies, but more specifically the second film. He’s still tame and more playful, but can very quickly change his demeanor when necessary. He also doesn’t act…gross the second the Light Fury appears. While he is fascinated by her, this shows in the form of quiet longing. After his first meeting with the Light Fury, he’s distracted and lost in thought, not frothing and panting like a horny dog.
Toothless and the Light Fury are allowed more time to bond. I hate how forced their relationship is in the official canon. In the movie they have two brief meetings before she decides she wants him as a mate and courts him. There’s no bond established between them. Well not in my AU. In my version, the scene on the beach is when we would see them actually bond with each other. My Light Fury doesn’t court him in this scene. Additionally, since Night Furies aren’t extinct in my AU, my Light Fury has actually seen other Night Furies before, so Toothless being different than her isn’t enough to win her over. He has to actually prove himself to her. And eventually, he does. The Light Fury has met Night Furies before, but she’s never met anyone like Toothless and that’s what draws her to him. He is different and unique, not because of his species, but because he’s compassionate and wears his heart on his sleeve.
Toothless doesn’t completely forget about Hiccup when he meets the Light Fury. Instead there would be moments here and there showing Toothless feeling conflicted. He wants the best of both worlds. He wants both Hiccup and the Light Fury to be a part of his life.
Neither Night Furies or Light Furies have the ability to cloak in my AU.
During the final battle, Grimmel uses Hiccup as leverage against Toothless, not the Light Fury.
Grimmel also drugs and rides Toothless instead of the Light Fury. Hiccup and the Light Fury have to work together in order to save him. It’s here that the Light Fury realizes how much Hiccup cares about Toothless and she finally starts coming around to him.
My AU doesn’t end with the dragons leaving for good. While the official movie pushes the idea of forcing the dragons into the Hidden World to keep them safe from humans, my AU is the opposite. The goal is to fight for a world where dragons won’t have to stay hidden and instead can live peacefully on the surface without the fear of being hunted. The reason the Berkians decide to stay on New Berk even after Grimmel is defeated is so they can protect the Hidden World. In return the dragons protect them as well. It’s a mutual relationship.
Toothless lives in the Hidden World with the Light Fury (even though she eventually comes around and trusts Hiccup, she isn’t suited for life on Berk. Being around so many people makes her nervous). However, Toothless and his mate visit Hiccup frequently. Even though Hiccup and Toothless have their own responsibilities, they still make time for each other.
And that’s about the main gist of it! There are certain scenes in particular that play out differently, but we’d be here for a while if I went over every single scene. That’s a post for another day. If you have any more questions about my AU please don’t hesitate to ask!
