Some great 'acting like they're together' moments, and I always love Louis but he gets some great dialogue in this one despite not being the focus.

I cry, this is just perfect, arggghh. I knew I was re-reading, but turns out I only read it in July, and I think I might have to make this an every 5 months tradition.
Stay Close, Hold Steady - jaerie - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @jaerie – alpha/beta/omega dynamics, shapeshifters, adoptive families. So unlike anything I'd read before, this author is top notch at building new worlds.
Like a Picture Print by Currier & Ives - armadillosunset - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 10k, G – Christmas, fluff, knitting. Oh my gosh. This is just so lovely and sweet, it's like a warm hug and a jumper in a story. There was one bit I teared up at, it was just so cute.
Crying lightning - frenchkiss - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 42k, M – amnesia, demisexuality, AU. This is such a wonderful story. I have a soft spot for amnesia fics anyway, but this was so well written and balanced, and I really liked where the author chose to take the story.
Better Not Pout, I'm Telling You Why - runaway_train - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @runaway-train-works – 24k, E – Christmas, hotel AU, Harry still believes in Father Christmas. I straight up loved this. It's a perfect festive tale, put me right in a Christmassy mood :)
And Touch Me Like You Never - runaway_train - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @runaway-train-works – 36k, E – New Years, friends to lovers, friends with benefits. Another fantastic fic! So well-written, the author has a neat little trick with the opening of each chapter, and there's enough obliviousness and angst in there to tick all my boxes.
It's A Never-Ending Helter-Skelter - runaway_train - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @runaway-train-works – 8k, T – desert island castaways, circus performers. What to even say about this? It's so much fun and full of great details.
Harry Poppins - jacaranda_bloom - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @jacaranda-bloom – 32k, E – kid fic, nanny Harry. This was so good. So much lovely domesticity! Just what I needed.
I Followed You, The Brightest Star - therogueskimo - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 28k, NR – canon divergent, solo Harry, famous/non-famous, coming out. This was so good. I didn't have time to read it all, but I did anyway (… yes, I was late for work).
You'll Be My Resolution - embro - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 24k, NR – agoraphobia, anxiety, Harry as the phone sex operator who acts really more as a dial-a-friend for Louis. I read an agoraphobia fic last month as well, and both were so amazing I think it's somehow become my new fave, which is perhaps a little odd. But seriously, this was great.
Someone to come home to - Thingssicant - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] – 19k, NR – cowboy!Louis, actor!Louis, assistant!Harry, famous/not famous – I loved this. Tension and conflict but also so sweet, and I loved the setting too.
Down the Backs of Table Tops (and Ticket Stubs in the Attic) - LadyLondonderry - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own]@londonfoginacup – 7k, NR – ghosts, magic, Grimmy as a cat. If you've read any of this author's work you know what I mean when I say this is unexpected, indescribable, and very, very good.
Falling in the Wrong Direction - FallingLikeThis - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @fallinglikethis – 25k, E – major (off-screen, pre-story) character death, angst and fluff, enemies to friends to lovers, film re-write AU. This was exactly what I needed. The grief was so well-paced, without being repetitive, that I found myself taking notes. I really enjoyed it.
It's Been Ages - 2tiedships2 - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @2tiedships2 – 13k, NR – alpha/beta/omega dynamics, friends to lovers, scenting/nesting, mutual pining. The want on both sides. The wrong decisions. Just, yes. Please. More. (Go read it.)
You Make It Feel Like Christmas - therogueskimo - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] - 7k, NR – Christmas, fluff, strangers to lovers. So sweet! Just really lovely and Christmassy, and you will want to wrap Louis up.
In A Twinkling - jacaranda_bloom - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @jacaranda-bloom – 89k, E - model!Harry, famous/not famous, Louis' nan's crochet circle, Christmas. With Christmas and everything I'm actually only halfway through, I got behind, but I wanted to rec this before the season ends because I adore what I've read so far!

Gryles Top Ten Fic Rec List
This is a rec list for the anon that asked for my top ten Gryles fics. As with the Tomlinshaw Rec List it’s so hard to choose just ten as there is SO MUCH GOOD QUALITY GRYLES FIC out there. I could have listed 50 favourites quite easily, but I’ve stuck to 10 which particularly stand out for me, all of which are 10,000 words or over. I’ve given a shout out to a couple of authors I love that have written lots of Gryles at the end. I’ve tried to strike a balance between reccing some of my old favourites as well as highlighting a couple of newer fics from authors who are starting to write and post Gryles in the interests of keeping up the support new authors theme. Gryles has a special place in my heart as it was my first ship in this fandom. After years of lurking on the periphery of Grimmy related stuff I ended up reading a fic by an author you may be familiar with (of course you are, because it’s the wonder that is sunsetmog) and haven’t looked back. Gryles fic is so, so good, it kills me.
If This is Love by sunsetmog (@magicalrocketships) was the first Gryles fic I ever read – the first fic in 1D/Radio 1 RPF fandom. I still think he’s not fucking thirty yet, but he is way too old for Harry fucking Styles is one of my favourite fic summaries ever and this whole fic is just wonderful. A long, gorgeous build up, with coming out, getting together and some of the best Gryles dialogue I have ever read. I’ve already said you should run to read all the Tomlinshaw by this author but you should also RUN, RUN, RUN to read all the Gryles. A brilliant author and the person responsible for sending me head first down this glorious rabbit hole of Nick shipping.
The Miseducation of Harry Styles by @junkshop-disco is another firm favourite. There are exquisite turns of phrase in this story such as It starts – as these things usually do – with the cold light of the desk leeching up into his skull and over the tattered remains of a hangover and draws neatly on all those canon hints we get of Nick being bad at commitment. The whole fic is sharp, witty and thoroughly enjoyable, with tightly crafted writing, angst, romance and humour.
elastic heart by ymorton. I would like to say from the outset, I hardly read MPreg. There’s plenty of it in HP fandom, because magic, and a whole Drarry fest dedicated to it. I don’t have issues with it, it’s just never been my thing and it usually errs pretty close to a squick for me. As a result, I put off elastic heart for ages, until I had read all the Gryles I possibly could and decided to give it a go. And this. This fic is my ‘exception to the rule’ MPreg fic because it is SO FUCKING GOOD. It’s ridiculously good. I was so in love with Nick by the end of this story, so mad at everyone for being shit to him and so enthralled by everything. It’s just excellent.
the dream lives of ordinary people by @waspabi. I’m a sucker for time travel, couldn’t give two hoots about the mathematical improbabilities of it all and will read ALL the time travel you can give me, thank you very much. This is so wonderful, with young Nick finding himself travelling into the future where he meets his older self and his older self’s (very) hot boyfriend, Harry Styles. I love the young Nick POV, which is desperately charming and this author is always consistently strong with compelling stories, wry humour and a superb, enjoyable writing style which makes their words just fly by. Love.
An English Man in New York by @tilda. Another particularly strong writer on superb form with this gloriously angsty but healing future fic which finds Nick and Harry together in New York, a whole lot of history between them. The dialogue is deft and the story unfolds wonderfully. Bonus for the additional part to this series, which allows me to wallow in this world tilda has created for a little bit longer. Loved it.
Better Life Choices by @ferritin4. This one is locked to AO3 users. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a trope and the fake boyfriends/pretend relationship trope in particular. I feel like Gryles lends itself particularly well to that trope, with Nick and Harry already friends who trust one another and with Nick already out. I always remember this fic for one scorching hot kiss at a Rita Ora concert, but it’s all just very, very good. DO THEY HAVE TO PRACTICE KISSING? Yes, yes of course they do. WILL I FOREVER LOVE THIS TROPE? Yes, I absolutely will.
you are the sweetest, sweetest song (i could hear your song forever) by @becominghawk. A/B/O is another one of the tropes/kinks that, like MPreg, I am super choosy about. I didn’t really read much of it at all and find it slightly hilarious that it was an RPF fandom that got me into it. This is a great fic, because it’s super hot and sweet, with lots of Nick taking care of Harry and it’s long which is a delightful treat. A charming, enjoyable read with Harry so, so in love with Nick it physically hurts and Nick being there for Harry 100% throughout.
titanium (we bleed in whispers) by @femmequixotic. One of my favourite authors of Drarry and Snarry (and a terrific person to boot) writing Gryles? Hell, yes. I’m here for it. As always femme’s writing is glorious and the angsty premise of thinking there’s going to be time and then getting confronted with the realisation that life doesn’t always work out like that is so deftly handled. A happy ending with a shed-load of beautiful heartbreak, injury and healing. The perfect combo, am I right?
A Relentless Maybe by JustAMouse. New Gryles? New, fantastic, scorching hot, long Gryles? YES PLEASE. I have seen this fic recced all over the place and rightly so, because it’s so, so good. Harry likes having his hair pulled or, more accurately, he likes it when Nick does it and it’s just so well-written, such a great exploration of trusting someone with kinks and the writing is spot on. Go and leave this author all the love and kudos on AO3 so they will write mooooore. Wonderful fic.
keep the light on by renlyne (@daretomarvel). Renlyne is another new Gryles writer who is producing some super Gryles drabbles at the moment and who wrote a gloriously long, twisty, turny, angsty Gryles post-hiatus future fic which posted a few months ago. I love that renlyne is a canon purist and the attention to detail is wonderful. They have a fine grasp not only of Harry and Nick, but also the other multiple cast of characters that appear throughout and the story is an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. A very fine fic and another author that I’m excited to see more from.
I want to give a shout out to @jiksax‘s Such Sweet Sorrow which isn’t included here because it is below the arbitrary 10k or above word count filter I applied to help me put this together. My Gryles headcanons are largely angsty despite all the romance and HEA fics I’ve recommended, and this is so perfect if you’re here for the angst. It does so much work with so few words and I love all that’s unspoken and left unsaid. Also, that last line is a killer. Other Gryles authors I have been known to obsess over (all AO3 names) include LittleMousling, estrella30, pukeandcry, blueandbrady, mrsronweasley, loafers and Hllangel.

i’m still not entirely clear how i fumbled my way into fic?? but i started out reading the ziall amnesia au and then found my way to zarry, where i read a BUNCH. the tennis au by hurricanedancer ‘one love’ is STILL one of my all-time favs! i would say narry, but since they haven’t really..shown any signs of life in a while..haha i would have to say LILO. i really thought those two belonged together in the best friendship kind of way, so i’d love for them to be friends again.

Sorry for the delay! I wanted to wait to answer until I was on my laptop.
I had to go look at what I even had on my recc list bc I made it a long time ago. There’s like nothing there sorry lol. As you know there isn’t tons of new content, but I just went through my bookmarks and here are some I liked that were written in the last year or two:
Doodle of a Surface Life by the one and only junkshopdisco (it’s a WIP and perfect)
The Morning After by Writcraft and If It All Goes Wrong by sunsetmog (two very very recent, good one shots about Pixie wedding gryles)
There were two good, really cute gryles AUs in the last 1D big bang:
The Seaweed is Always Greener by goseaward (not something I’d usually be into but I thought this story was so precious I loved this Harry)
High Spirits by becka (this is like half gryles, half nouis fyi. The gryles parts were v qt)
Let’s just see how we go by becka (age warning on this one. I liked this Nick)
Can’t Escape the Magnetic Side by hllangel (a XFactor AU from when nick was on)

Recent faves that I’ve revisited were the ‘prince and his DJ’ series, phone sex with niall listening, never ever (similar in theme), small town cop/town sweet heart mini series. So many I could go on!

Top 10 one direction fics that you might not have read but I feel like you should.
Nice long title for you there, but a pretty simple concept. Ten fics that I love and that I don’t think got the love they deserved. I think all of these have a hits under 5k. I’ve also linked to peoples Tumblr’s where I have them =) So if you read the fics and want to hit them with some praise, GO FOR IT. (Or comment on Ao3, that’d be a lovely thing to do.)
Let’s just see how we go - Becka/ @realmenwearpuppypants - Nick/Harry - “Nick is a prostitute with a high-end client list, and he can think of any number of ways aspiring popstar Harry could have gotten his number, dozens of people from any major label who could have handed him a card and said, “If you want to experiment, be discreet.” This fic just has a nice feel too it, Nick & Aimee’s relationship within this one is also written really well which I appreciate. I always feel like a fic that pays just as much attention to the friendships within it, as it does the main relationship, is a fic that really builds a world and this is one of those.
Give this wandering soul a home - sunshineflying/ @sunshineflying - Multiple pairings - Covering nearly five years, this fic follows all the characters, though Louis most of all, as they work their way through relationships, road blocks, and more coursework than they can sometimes handle to come through alright on the other side. Through a series of ups and downs, Louis and everyone else settle into lives they’re pleased with – a task that several of them didn’t think was possible to accomplish. Inspired by Skins UK. - Blood sweat and tears went into this fic and it still remains the best thing I’ve been allowed to britpick. It is long, but it’s worth the ride. The pain in the Zouis pairing is palpable as your read.
Follow the sun - Hllangel - Nick Grimshaw/Niall Horan - A few years from now, Niall asks Nick to do his coming out interview. Gosh do I love this one. It’s like a cosy,warm jumper in a fic. Nick’s nervousness at being given this particular interview and Niall’s charm are really well written.
Die another day - wildestoftales/ @travelledspace - Liam/Louis/Nick - Agent Liam Payne is excellent at what he does - he works effectively, is quick on his feet as well as precise, and never lets emotions get the best of him. He plans on carrying on like that during his newest mission.And it would have worked out just fine - if it hadn't been for Agent Nick Grimshaw and Louis Tomlinson having different ideas. Oh this is a great little fic. I think it gets overlooked because the pairing isn’t a common one, but gosh. Louis is prickly in the best sort of way and Steffi has a real knack for Liam.
Eyes Bright - wardo_wedidit - Nick/Harry (always!agirl) - In which, after years of being almost-something, Nick and Harry try to figure out what they feel for each other and where the hell they go from here.Oh yeah, and they're both girls. This fic has a CRIMINALLY low 952 hits. I do not understand why. It’s hot, but it’s also really warm and filled with feels. They’ve also managed to get a femme Nick absolutely 100% spot on.
When I opened my eyes,you were what I wanted to see - cashewdani/ @cashewdani - Daisy decides the best way to ring in 30 is with a threesome. She didn't plan on getting pregnant. Especially with Nick's baby. A very vague Threesome AU. - I go back to this fic a disgusting amount. It’s just about everything I love in a fic; Beautifully characterised, well written and ends happily. My only complaint is that there’s never been a sequel.
I could build a castle - littlecather/ @little-cather - Harry/Taylor - In the not too distant future, Taylor and Harry buy and renovate a disused beach house. - You can feel this fic. Every word resonates and it’s so very absorbing that you feel like you’re there with them. Both Harry and Taylor feel flawed and real and it only adds to your enjoyment of this piece.
First street verse - aimmyarrowshigh,spibsy/ @aimmyarrowshigh - There are still wrought-iron lampposts on First Street, and all of the shop's facades are brick and big glass windows and draping awnings like wedding cakes. The street has been the same for as long as there's been a town, and there's been a town ever since people from the city realized they could get away from the world if they moved across the strait to the island. It's a nice place to live, Ella thinks. Small enough not to be on a map. Personally, I love a good whole universe fic and this delivers that in spades. Even if you’re not familiar with any of the other characters it still works. It’s just a lovely, warm fic that you can sit in and really get to love all of the individual shop owners and workers.
Figure my heart out - 30shayds - Niall Horan/Louis Tomlinson - For the prompt: Niall and Louis both start at a university far from home (abroad, or just a far away city) and end up in the same house/building due to last minute accommodation applications. They become friends and find they help each other a lot with the homesickness. Just a really, really great friends to lovers Uni AU and honestly? Who doesn’t love one of those.
Never felt like home (until I had you) - groundopenwide/ @groundopenwide - Niall/Zayn - “Missed you.”Zayn’s voice is hushed, careful, as though he’s not sure he’s allowed to fully make the admission. Each syllable slurs together like he’s spinning molasses.Niall shuffles his head down the pillow until he can kiss each of Zayn’s knuckles, just once. Zayn hums, the sound coming from far away. They fall asleep with their hands intertwined.Or: Tour ends, and Niall goes home to Zayn. This is just a super, super warm feeling fic that makes a dark period in the bands history feel a little lighter.
