Anime and manga recommendation thread of things I’ve been enjoying in recent years~

My personal favs/ones I super enjoyed will have a ✨ on them :)

(Some of these might not have official EN translations since any physical manga I read are JP copies. I guess if any sound interesting, ask publishers to license them!)

I won’t get too much into what they’re about because I think finding out is part of the fun. I’ll mostly list the genres and a little blurb. Some of these I feel like I rarely hear anyone talk about so it would be cool to see people try these :)

✨The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumoku Ren

(4 volumes, ongoing)

Available in English

Picked it up earlier this year up knowing nothing but was immediately gripped by the eerie mood. Takes place in the country side where mysterious things have been happening. My friend couldn’t stop reading when I recommended it.

✨Banana Fish by Yoshida Akimi

(19 volumes + side stories, completed)

It’s getting reprinted in English, so what are you waiting for!

Anime - yes and it’s so good…

The manga is from the 80’s-90’s but the anime updated it in 2018.

Without giving too much away, it takes place in NY where our characters are trying to break out of the vicious cycle of violence and figure out a mystery that’s also connected to a conspiracy. Lovable cast, keeps you on the edge of your seat. I’m obsessed.

Lovers’ Kiss by Yoshida Akimi

(2 volumes, completed)

JP only

A short story where high schoolers are just trying to figure life out. Yoshida-sensei has this way of writing human stories and melancholy/tragedy while still leaving a glimmer of hope.

✨Mushishi by Urushibara Yuki

(10 volumes, complete)

I think the physicals are out of print but you can read it on bookwalker. It deserves a reprint!!!

Anime - yes, it’s a whole vibe please watch it

I watched S1 ages ago but never got to the rest until recently. Recently picked up the manga and plan to read it eventually. Another top fav of all time. Amazing atmosphere. We see the daily life of mushi expert Ginko deal with mysterious phenomenon mushi cause.

COMEDY, SLICE OF LIFE

✨Yotsuba&! by Azuma Kiyohiko

(15 volumes, ongoing)

Available in English

This series is super cute, wholesome, and hilarious! Yotsuba is honestly a delight, and following her daily life as she befriends her new neighbors is just a good time. Yet another fav of all time.

Anime - yes, but… listen I’ve never said “don’t watch the anime” because everyone can enjoy stuff however they want but... don’t watch the anime… I’ve never been so offended by an adaption ;_;

After discovering something he’s passionate about for the first time, Yatora navigates the art world despite his fears and being a complete newcomer. This series made me cry so much, I love it… please

Blind-bought this a while ago. Yoi is dubbed “Prince” by her classmates for her cool demeanor, but she’s not the only one.

Anime - yes, but I haven’t seen it yet so idk

I’m not very far in this one yet, but I’m having a great time. Love the friendship, the found family vibes. Seeing Yona acknowledge that she is naive and then stepping up is awesome.

idk how I slept on this for so long since it seems like something right up my alley. Literally picked up a lot of all the 39 currently out volumes (it came with the light novel too), no questions asked. I’m only a few volumes in, but I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s giving me Ertugrul vibes (the historical Turkish drama). No, I won’t expand on that point, go watch Ertugrul!

Anime - yes, I’ve been watching this not reading it yet

Listen, isekai just don’t ever click with me, but this one does. There’s political drama and we get to learn about the culture and daily lives of people living in this world.

Our mc is reincarnated into a medieval fantasy world where access to books is limited, making it her personal hell. But don’t worry, she gonna do something about it! This series is so interesting and I love the character dynamics. Even if isekai aren’t your thing, try this!

✨Requiem of the Rose King by Kanno Aya

It has an anime but I heard fans were really mad at the adaption. I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment.

Normally not the kind of thing I would go for, but this series has me constantly screaming. IT’S SO MESSY, but the good kind of messy. It takes every fiber in my body to contain myself when reading in public. It features an mc who was born intersex and a battle for the crown of England.

While Fujimoto-sensei’s more well-known work wasn’t 100% clicking with me, I tried his one shots and really enjoyed them. I particularly liked the cinematic feeling and environmental storytelling.

I’d just like to introduce an OC very close to me that I’ve never had the pleasure to write with anyone besides 1 or 2 others. Hikaru, who goes by Ru. Your local aspiring playwright who works as an Inn waitress in late 15th-early 16th century

Bio: Hikaru was around 6 or 7 when she ran away. Coming from a poor fishing village, the young child refused to be married into a wealthier family and so she snuck to the docks and hid among the cargo until eventually they reached a port. She climbs out, starving and sick and ends up wandering the streets of London before finding herself in a small country side. She’s taken in by an older couple.

The couple had recently lost their child and took her in. There was one other in the village across from their own, who was from her home country and she too escaped. They taught her English, and eventually Hikaru grew to have a few happy years. She is about 11 or 12 when the nobles came. The village of farmers often rented their lands from nobles and when they could no longer pay up, the village was burned. People were slaughtered or ran but she was asleep during the initial and ended up being awaken by her adopted mother. The woman died from smoke inhalation and covered Hikaru’s mouth with a scarf.

In a panic, seeing the nearby village on fire, the young teen who had become Hikaru’s surrogate older sibling, rushes over, and upon finding her collapsed body starts to shake her, screaming. Hikaru was dragged out, but much like the adopted mother, the other woman inhaled far too much and suffered burns trying to free Hikaru from the mass damage. She doesn’t remember much of what happened except crying out and shocking green eyes that looked sad.

She awakens in an inn in london, bandage around her right eye and arms, suffering very thankfully few minor burns. She earns her keep and eventually becomes apprenticed to as local apothecary. Hikaru’s talent for healing was not unnoticed by her teacher and that’s when she started realizing, perhaps she was not normal. Soon her wounds healed, but she could no longer see clearly out of her right eye, which had been damaged by embers getting into it.

Her life is a blur, but eventually she is taken in by a very well off Noble and soon begins to live a lift of comfort, but it’s not what she wanted… to be caged. So she ran off, many more times than she can count, but she was always returned, always punished. Unless the noble had company she was more often then not left alone or called upon for more physical needs that had to be met. She made friends with two mercenaries, and sometimes they would kidnap her, but it was no more than a day and a promise to return.

She was happier with them, but found herself unable to truly keep from her master, her lover. He was hypnotic in a way that drew her in, kept her wanting his touch: both the pleasurable and painful.

Note: Can’t think much past this, but this is the briefest gloss over for her past I can think of.

Note 2: *Hikaru grew up in a time where last names were not really given, and when she left her homeland she left most of her past behind, hence she no longer recalls her family name.

Note 3: Modern times you can find her working as a waitress.

My Thoughts on Super Dimension Fortress: Macross

Vanvan reminded me I like jotting my thoughts on shows/movies down in public, so with the creation of my Tumblr account I can actually do that without a 2,000,000,000 post thread.

Anyways, I found Macross from a remix of Chirei Ito's "Merry Christmas" called Super Riser! by Nanidato, played over a montage of Do You Remember Love? clips, and I thought "Huh, that looks cool" and decided to watch it, not realizing there was a diference between the movie and the 1982 anime.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross is a classic mecha anime about 3 things: Love, War, and the raw brainmelting power of music. Being the first entry it has the element of surprise, tricking you into thinking it's a mecha anime, when in reality the mechs have 0 importance, and are intentionally designed to not be the main focus. It's actually all about war being GAY and we should actually all just MAKE HOT ALIEN SEX LOVE!

While it starts off slow, I got real attached to the characters real quick, even the side characters hold a place in my brain rent free, as it really made me feel like I know them personally, even though at first glance they seem bland. Also this image is the entire relationship of the main characters:

The story is incredibly unconventional as well, as the last 11 episodes of the 37 episode series are a glorified epilogue detailing the realistic consequences of the choices they made, and how they deal with them.

Speaking of realism, it was an interesting choice to make the whole series grounded in realism, which you really wouldn't expect from a mecha anime, especially one from '82. The worldbuilding is solid, and did about as good for suspension of disbelief as you could get for its time. Probably the only 2 parts of the story that broke that suspension was in the earlier episodes where a whole town seamlessly warps into the Macross, and to a lesser extent the first beauty pageant was a little jarring.

I'd like to take a moment to really appreciate real quick how Ichijou Hikaru, the main character, gets a TON of development as a person. Even though his personality doesn't change, it's charming seeing how his thought process changes due to what happens to him and the consequences of his own actions. It's subtle, but it's EXTREMELY appreciated.

The music is SO GODDAMN GOOD. Even though for a while you'll get REAL tired of hearing THE SAME SONG OVER AND OVER AGAIN, Lynn Minmay's music catalogue expands, and I don't think I dislike even one song, considering her VA is an actual musician.

Finally, I'd like to mention how the antagonists, the Zentradi fleet, grow more and more human the more we know about them. From the very first few episodes, it's made clear that they're not just a generic warmonger alien species, though warmongers they are. Hm...... Have you ever wanted to fuck a giant? Have a kid with one? Start a family with her and dedicate your everything to her after beating her in a video game? It's that kind of show.

Anyways, if you can stand some funky 80's animation, SDF Macross is a classic I don't think I'm capable of forgetting. Episode 26 is probably the greatest thing I've ever seen, had me on the verge of tears, and I don't think I'm quite capable of putting my feelings into words. As of writing this I've watched Flashback 2012, Do You Remember Love?, Macross Plus, and I'm like halfway through Macross 7. This is a phase that'll last a while. Fuck me, I guess.

Notes: So, I’m going to assume you meant to type Kyoya instead of Kyoka (i thought of Kyoka Jiro brom BNHA), to make that clear beforehand! Also thanks for the compliment! I’m glad you enjoy what I write, it makes me happy seeing that people enjoy it.

Otherwise, this sounded kinda fun! I will say, though, that this will be based on how I see the characters and how they are written. I haven’t read enough of the manga to get a super in depth grasp of their extreme inner selves (if you know what I mean), but I have finished the anime a multitude of times - I think I can get it pretty good, due to that.

intelligence isn’t necessary, but common sense might be

especially if you’re a commoner

with the way he can be, he needs someone to tie him down a bit

someone that understands how things work

(i’m really just putting this out there now, but every person here loved something about haruhi that would be universal no matter if it was or wasn’t haruhi)

it definitely helps if you can open him up to a new culture, too

he is a curious person, so i don’t doubt that he’d love to hear about any customs that my differ from his

especially if you have a certain religion or ethnicity

speaking if which, i do think that he would try to adjust his mannerisms to adjust to you and your family’s mannerisms

he (surprisingly) doesn’t come off as a player, so i do think that the way he handles himself reflects his ideal plan

whatever happens in the future does, but he wants to marry you.

i also don’t think he would care too much about gender (after a bit)

he means well, really

but he may be a little rough with pronouns and preferences in the beginning

if you can debate with him, you’ve got him

especially if you can debate with him on certain topics

that, in theory, shows your understanding of complex ideas

which presents your intelligence to him

he finds intelligence attractive

that and if you can keep a cool head

he has to constantly handle big situation after big situation due to tamaki and the club’s antics, so a level head would be much appreciated.

there’s a small portion of me that just knows

that if you didn’t even get along with tamaki in the slightest, you’d likely be ignored

like, if you find him annoying, that’s fine

kyoya can find him annoying, too

but if you absolutely hate his guts, you are likely not going to go along too well with him

the two of them are an unconventional team so to tear them apart is to topple the japanese high school equivalent of royalty

that would drive him up a wall, but i can imagine that since they are a team

that you would be dragged into club activities whether or not you are a member

otherwise, please talk with him

kyoya, though driven, is also extremely unaware of his health (in a way that he ignores it)

so he needs someone to pull him back and get him to realize his worth outside of grades and gaining his father’s approval

bring him down and get him to take a break sometimes.

i’m gonna say it

mans is most definitely a tough read

like really

but there is one thing that i just k n o w he loves

he loves to be the protector

really, just looking at the way that he approaches situations with honey and haruhi proves this

even the rest of the club at times, in all honesty

so he’d like someone he can protect

(not at all times, tho)

(he is well aware of the lengths you’d go to in order to make sure that you walk out of a situation in pristine condition)

but still-

at least just let him help you

his love language is very obviously acts of service, so anyone that is willing to allow him to do so would be great

now we get to honey-senpai

ik it’s a common thread amongst everyone here, but this (next to the twins) would be the most prominent

honey’s judgement hasn’t often been wrong

and he’s really welcoming, so if you tip off honey’s radar imagine yourself cut from the list in general

seriously

you absolutely, positively, truly have to get along with mori’s precious cousin

(and do note, kissing ass gets you nowhere in this scenario)

that, and if you get along with kids in general

i see him as the kind of guy that would really like kids, despite the fact that some can get super scared of him

he’s really a sweet guy, so he needs someone sweet with him

like, if you have a younger sibling or extended family member that is like

a toddler, let’s say

and you can play with them and make them happy, even generally caring for them

yeah, that will make him happy

really happy

i also seem his as the type to like someone a little more...quiet

not like a bookworm (strictly, at least)

but like, someone that is more introverted

and can also hold their own in classes

not genius level, but hopefully you get the gist

if you could hold a joke and have a sense of humor, too

think a personality type similar to the “girl-next-door” archetype without the amount of modernized twists and gender specification

speaking of modernization

i feel like he’d like someone who’s a little more traditional

not like “stay at home and do [blank]” traditional, though

really, dude’s a family man and he makes it very evident

that being the fact that they would like someone that can have fun and focus on the good side of life

but unlike kaoru, he isn’t going to be the type to ignore that at most times

(particularly upon first meeting)

if you can take a joke, that’s makes you attractive

if you can tag along with the twins’ pranks?

even more so

(again, particularly to hikaru)

willing to clown anyone else just because you want to?

yep, check that off the list as well

really if you can let loose, he will be drawn to you for it

otherwise, though, what he wants isn’t going to be the most ideal for him

it may take kaoru to point it out, possibly even mori or honey, but he needs someone to bring him down

he can get a little egotistical when something continually goes his way

but when that is immediately dashed, he gets mad

not really violent, rather passive-aggressive and insulting

he knows, when willing to acknowledge it especially, that he needs someone to calm him

call him out on what he’s done, tell him that it isn’t right.

remind him that the way that he is acting is only going to cause more harm than good

help him acknowledge where he needs help

help him develop himself and himself alone

help him come to terms with others, too

really, he needs someone that can take a joke, make a joke, and knows when to avoid joking altogether

(that may seem like a stretch to him, though)

another stipulation:

you HAVE TO get along with kaoru

HAVE TO.

there is no debate here, really

i remind you of being able to aid him in pranking others with him and kaoru

but that also means that he has to trust you enough to tell you anything about him

only kaoru and a select few others know how he really feels, and how he really processes everything, and how he really grew up and the feelings that came with it

so he also HAS TO trust you

and kaoru respecting you and liking you is the first step

in regards to appearance, though, i do feel like he would be a little more particular to it

he would budge, it believe that all of the host club members definitely have their moments but mean well

but i also do think that your appearance may be the first thing to grab his attention

i’m thinking he’d be drawn more to people that look similar to the models that his mom uses in fashion ad campaigns

to be specific, those from active wear ads

i don’t know why, but i feel like he’d like someone who looks like they take care of themself

but really, while that may be what draws his attention, it would come down to your personality

(i really felt the need to place this here especially)

(no clue why but i just get the feeling that the twins would be way more judgemental from the get-go)

to make it clear, though, he may get picky and a little nasty, but he means well

which makes it even weirder when it comes to arguments

there will be days where he will die on his hill of choice

he’ll refuse to listen, refuse to acknowledge you even

possibly even go to kaoru and proceed to make a fool of you without telling him the whole truth

(only for kaoru to pull him back)

he would be likely to do what kyoya might here

going to bed angry would definitely be something that he may do, but i also feel that he’d have enough awareness to settle it just a little bit

which leads to the other side

he can also be very gentle about it

(i have to draw another parallel to tamaki here)

this side is one in which he would be likely to at the very least ease thing sdown enough to sleep in the same bed

i see him as the type of hold you close to him, cheek to chest

so i find that he would be sleeping in the same bed, but on the complete other side and his back facing you

settled just enough to calm the situation

only then would he be willing to settle the situation the next morning

but in general, he isn’t going to pay much attention to you if you don’t have a sense of humor

really, he just wants to relax with someone that can make him feel safe and comfortable

someone that can bring out the best in him and give him space when needed

as well as help him become the best version of himself without it being strictly ‘hikaru and kaoru’

Kaoru Hitachiin

gonna say it again, definitely think kaoru would go for someone with a sense of humor

but he’d also want them to draw the line when necessary

and not be solely focused on humor and pranks

it’s all fair, really, but he already sees enough of the shallow image that he and his brother put on for the attendees of the club

so to only put your attention onto that would definitely make him

well...

kinda hate you

he is definitely more emotionally aware than hikaru is, so he’d be the one to step back and see you for more

your humor would be the signal

your personality would be the habit

and your reactions to him would solidify his interest in you

to be patient is to grab his attention

and intelligent

unlike hikaru, i imagine that he would be more interested in things that are the complete opposite of what he puts on for show

he doesn’t care about how other girls react to him and only that, he’d also care about appreciation for his achievements

which is also what he would seek in a partner

someone who can appreciate him, as well as appreciate themselves

that also applies to grades

he finds someone smart to be attractive

but that is still only something small

he would definitely be the one to pay less attention to physical appearance, too

he would still be picky

(sadly)

but he would also be quicker to ignore that and put more of his focus onto your mind, reactions, and the tiny little things that you do in your everyday life

but i do find that he would focus on your appearance in a different manner

like, appreciating the little acne scars and moles on your face

if you have a port-wine stain, too

that would intrigue him

even something as simple as a little mark that looks similar to one would draw his attention

that and any modifications and stuff like your eyebrows

i also feel that he’d be drawn to someone who is a bit thicker

like, muscular, heavier, has a build to suit that, etc.

really just any body that has a bit more space on it

and i do think he would really like body modifications

idk why i just..do

he seems like he’d like a slight divide in appearance in general, honestly

otherwise he is most definitely going to pay attention to how you help others

as much as he loves hikaru, the way he handles things (as well as a majority of the host club too, tbh) is really not great

not great in the slightest

handling things with utmost patience but also trying to take into account the person you’re helping just...

it leaves him flustered.

in arguments, too, that would be important

he can have a bit of a fiery temper at times, so to have someone that can bring him down would be great

he’d also appreciate it if his partner would be the type to tackle the issue before it gets out of hand

like, he wouldn’t want to go to bed angry but he wouldn’t be above it

(at least for one night)

he wants to rest with you, he wants to cuddle you in bed and give you a goodnight kiss on the cheek

he wants to be gentle and sweet with you

but again, he and hikaru do have some similarities that aren’t too great in hindsight

so to combat that, someone that can handle things like these in a composed manner would be great

kaoru really wants to spoon with you and sleep well and wake up to your sleepy eyes in the morning, so please-

no, really tho

he wants someone that can separate him from his brother and treat him as his own person

someone he can trust with his worst secrets and most awful insecurities and worries

someone who can treat him like a king but also knows when to get him to step down and draw the line

someone that can carry themself with a good sense of humor but a well-rounded sense of when to cut the crap

Host Club

First off, they all keep you away from the Host Club. While some of them (Tamaki, Honey) would love to see you while they’re at the club, it’d just be safer for you to stay away.

The club constantly changes aesthetics and there have been many bright colors used and no one wants to accidentally harm you.

Thankfully most of the members are very patient with you (I say most because I can see Hikaru and maybe Kyoya needing to take a moment to think of other methods to help you and they get a bit frustrated, with themselves not you, because of it).

If they ever need to repeat something or come up with another way to explain something to you then they are perfectly fine with that.

I can see Tamaki becoming really enthusiastic with trying to come up with different ways to explain things and then he needs to take a moment to calm down.

Haruhi and Mori are definitely the most patient with helping out when they can. All of them do their best to listen to you and give you time to express your thoughts.

Okay all of them (well besides Haruhi, but the other hosts would gladly help her help you out) are very rich too so they’re ready to get professional help should you want it. No one will pressure you into doing anything you don’t want to, of course, but that is an option.

I swear this man is somehow more overprotective than Tamaki. But not in that "I can't let you go" type of way. It's more "Make sure to take one of my professional bodyguards whenever you go" type of way..

As we all know, Kyoya is in charge of practically everything in the host club. So he always puts on your songs for the time and forces everybody to listen to your immaculate voice. It ain't torture. It's a form of love.

He sadly can't attend any of your concerts, but he's tries to be supportive at home.

He can probably sing, he just doesn't like to. And fair enough. It can make your throat dry after some time.

Which is why he always has cough drops on hand for you. He is always prepared.

He's also in charge of your concerts. He buys the stage, the props, the lights, the employees. He wants the best for the best s/o.

And if people want your signature at school, he makes them pay for it. No matter how many times you beg him not to charge people.

Hikaru Hitachiin➛

He can't sing.

But he can play the guitar.

He loves to have you sit in his lap where he stretches the guitar to be in front of you, and plays it from there. He can also hear you singing perfectly.

He's grateful you're his s/o because you also help promote his family business. You wear a lot of the outfits his family makes to concerts.

Also extremely supportive and goes to all your concerts. Doesn't care if the other hosts need him back in the music room. He and his brother will go to your concerts.

Yeah. You heard me. Him and his brother. It's okay though. Koaru is a massive fan. Music wise and relationship wise.

Overall, good relationship. Doesn't help that the boy gets jealous easily.

Kaoru Hitachiin➛

He can't sing nor can he play an instrument. But he can write surprisingly good songs. The majority of your songs were written by him.

Like his brother, he's literally so supportive of you. He's the more emotional one out the pair and it really shows.

He wants nothing more than for you to love him. You're his s/o afterall.

Someone requested for the person who writes your songs, and all you responded with was, "He is nothing more than a highschool student who I had fallen in love with". Yeah. That started a lot of controversy.

Everyone wanted to figure out who this mysterious highschooler was, when he really was quite popular.

When Koaru told the news to the other hosts, they had apparently already known. Probably cause of Kyoya but yknow. Nine times out of ten, your manager is probably someone who works for the Ootori's

Everyone is overall super loving to see that Kaoru has found someone else he can count on.

Takashi "Mori" Morinozuka➛

This one is gonna be short as all we know is that this guy is a massive, quite teddy bear. That is all.

He LOVES your music. It's something I tries to listen to a lot. If he's alone? Your music. If he gets to pick the song on the radio? Your music. If he has the off chance of picking the sing to play in the music room? Your music. He loves it.

He also loves to pick you up and dance to quite a few songs.

And allow to me admit this but just because he's quiet doesn't mean he's good at singing. I'm sorry. But he probably sucks at singing. He has a nice voice, but he can't understand pitches and tones properly.

He's like your own personal bodyguard instead. A tall mysterious man that's so damn quiet. Not mention handsome.

Mitsukuni "Honey" Haninozuka➛

Despite Honey-Senpai being my favorite character in OHSHC, I don't know what to write.

He loves cake and being cute.

A lot of people underestimate him whenever you're out together that it shocks them when he drop kicks people to ground. Quite literally.

He is a black belt for a reason.

Another personal bodyguard except less intimidating. You know?

A lot of people mistaken him to be your little brother, to the point he has to make it known to the world that he's "s/o's boyfriend".

Overall, a lot of people just see him as this cute bean, when he's more than that.

Yes. He's an adorable bean. But he's also the devil in disguise.

Ritsu Kasanoda➛

This man does not know how to feel.

He tends to be caught up in his own Headspace so he didn't really realize that his s/o was a Popstar. But when he does find out, all he can listen to are your songs.

He's glad he found out. He lives for your taste in music.

He's another personal bodyguard. He's so tall and scary. But then you get to know him and he's soft and squishy with trouble socializing.

There have been a lot of people that admired him for scoring such a hot shot like you, and he can't help but love this attention, but it can be much. He has a private life.

He does all he can do to protect you. You're famous. He has to make sure that you have the best time in your youth.

Overall, all he wants is admiration and to be respected. And while he does get that from a lot of your fans, there have been quite a few who hate him because he got with you. Not that he cares.

All that cares to him is that you admire him. To which you do. He's so strong but a baby on the inside.

Quite possibly the most jealous one out the bunch here.

That's it. I wasn't sure if I should add Renge as yes, she's in the Host club. But she isn't a host nor a hostess. There were a few characters that I had trouble writing for as you can probably tell, but overall they would all be extremely supportive of you.

Only 3 of them would get jealous. Tamaki, Hikaru, Kasanoda.
