This housing crisis is truly ridiculous. You're either paying -$1,000 for a janky shoebox (nation wide might I add), or you either have to scrape together +$2,000 for a decent place (nice floors, decent kitchen, enough sq ft.) worth that price.

And with that +$2,000 price tag, you generally have to rent with someone, which I'm not willing to do because ppl can be weird and unreliable w/ rent payment. And then...THEN!...student loan servicers have the fucking audacity to increase monthly payments this year?!?!

How the fuck are young professionals supposed to establish ANY sliver of independence, with so many odds against us?

Hello there! Getting Started™️in tumblr rp has two parts, I think. making the actual blog, and networking (while Doing Things.)

Your blog itself probably needs a rules page, this can be anything you want to say or express- some people's rules are specific, some are just a few sentences. Establishing some boundaries or guidelines can be pretty important! But! it's entirely up to you, it gives a first impression to others on you as the writer. People mostly hesitate or have anxiety about accidentally upsetting others, so having something there helps! Even if it's just saying you're pretty chill.

Something else helpful is a muse page- people want to know what kind of character that you are writing! For some they will link to a wiki page, and for some they write out a whole bio for their headcanons- For example if you looked in my Volo's bio, you'd see that he's 32, cisgender, albino, and can see through fog. all headcanon stuff that might not appear in every reply i do! For OCs especially there can be a history section detailing their life and who they are!

The other major half is networking. Following RP blogs, making a promo (which you can make visible in tags;; blahblahfandom rp, multifandom rp, crossover rp, etc.) when you find a blog you are interested in, you can reach out! through ims or asks as well. (If your blog is curated enough and has its own dash/account, your sidebar may of course recommend rp blogs! that's about the only algorithm involved. the rest's work. sideblogs notoriously have trouble because they can't Follow people.) Like, I figure a lot of personal blogs find my posts/blog through tumblr's search function- which i'm still not used to because it's the new default, rather than going into the Actual #tag.

a subset of networking is Doing Stuff. Making headcanon posts, in character posts, open starters, and threading with other people will show off your writing enough for people to notice. Some people turn their nose away if a blog 'only' contains 'too much' RP memes, vent posts, or just doesn't have what they're looking for. While it's not a requirement, it may be helpful to make sure you have examples up to see. This part kind of really never ends imo, networking and doing stuff, but it's pretty essential to getting noticed. But like any facet of the internet or world, there's always someone who wants to talk to you! And would love to hear what you have to say! I'm sure that's something that even seasoned rpers might need to hear, everyone gets discouraged sometimes. It only takes a few people getting going to boost you along tho, so! Try to appreciate people! Y'know, socializing and all that, haha.

As far as some etiquette goes, try not carelessly spam-like or reblog. Since the person is writing a story thread, they use their activity to keep track. 'hmmm i wonder if someone replied today?' i ask! i look in my notes! somebody liked this somebody liked this somebody liked this somebody liked this

oh no! where is my post? it can be a little frustrating, so try to keep likes to real time or so, it's much more manageable. People do enjoy likes and feedback, but the first major reason that people block personals is to avoid this kind of thing. In my opinion, it probably doesn't help that it's a wordless interaction, but it depends! If you're not overdoing it, it's delightful, too!

Replies are much more free game imo, it's words as feedback and a bit more enjoyable. (I'll admit a reply on a pinned post is...a first for but hey! this works!)

Asks are enjoyed and adored. Literally as long as it isn't hate, any tumblr user likes getting asks, but RPers are ravenous, lmao. Some may get overwhelmed by their own workload and have to delete em, but socially speaking people love talking about their muses! Or how they as a mun write!

The second reason people block personals is discourse. I'd say the biggest cultural difference, if you are stepping into rp, is to please learn to share. Especially with the onset of Search showing things even mentioning character names. (some people even cen.sor their muse's name to avoid this.) You've probably seen mockey of kin discourse 'no doubles' and etc. Basically, don't be an ass about headcanons and try to respect people's portrayals. RPers would rather write, so many will not deal with the bullshit and their blog is not for arguing. Trust me that when anons or whoever interject in order to be a dick, you become the butt of the joke for that blog's whole audience. Many people love to write threads with duplicates! But even those whose rules say no duplicates as far as interactions go know that it's not nice to insult people and stay in their lane. Be Kind! Ask questions! If you'd like to share a headcanon of your own, the blog owner might like to see it, just don't be pushy and you're good! They might even have their own headcanon even if they disagree with yours and may share that! Everyone's writing is unique and that's the beauty of it! I've personally even had some random personal reply trying to shut down my headcanon/simping in a belittling way, which....i didn't fucking ask. let me have my fun!!! Sooo yea read the room! Have fun!

they're searching for atlantis with ✨a twist✨:

the twist being: phantom islands. and also, lost lands.

each of these cryptic pieces of land has its own weird magical thing. ie the isle of bermeja somewhere in the caribbean region can make you immortal in certain circumstances. sannikov land (on the laptiev sea, was mentioned in tma) is essentially a gateway to a pocket dimension. etc etc

atlantis however (located roughly as on athanasius kircher's map) is kinda like the cryptic piece of land supreme. here i'm taking some inspiration from edgar cayce (and by proxy disney's 2001 film atlantis: the lost empire). it's kinda like a superpowerful energy source. also potential treasure trove. also, impossible to find

there's a ragtag bunch of searchers who want to find atlantis for various reasons. some even don't want to find it

most of them live at their hq in elder valley, a mansion on the isle of guernsey and just. research. and found family

the characters

guillaume louis de grailly the seventh (also known as louis grailly) – 32 years old. enfp. french aristocracy (raised in england). the main driving force for the search. a professional heir & hobbyist treasure hunter with a cambridge history degree as a treat. also somewhat a philosopher. quite a good leader. made some bad choices in life and thus regrets a lot. wants to set himself apart from his family and continue the legacy of his mentor, professor adelard talvey. appears either very posh and well-groomed, or dresses in a cambridge sweatshirt, pyjamas trousers and birkenstocks. big repressed gay. divorced from his forced-lavender-marriage-wife, audrey. father to edith 'eddy' grailly (he did in fact name his daughter after edith piaf)

victor revenko – 31 years old. intj. british/jewish/ukrainian. works as a researcher/archivist for the national archives after his explosive departure from cambridge, where he alongside louis was mentored by talvey. wants desperately to make a name for himself and become something more than just an archivist. man's frustrated. physically cannot get over anything and is quite neurotic. big nerd big autism. weak lungs. short king. fuelled by coffee. wears exclusively bluegrey grandpa jumpers. speaks russian, latin, french & german. he is also gay and not really repressed.

captain ines highmore – circa 420 years old, physically 53. immortal. entj. british/barbadian. born to an english navyman and a barbadian woman sometime in the late 16th century. depending on the time in history, either a pirate or a navy officer. she's a mean old lesbian and will flirt with a woman at any given chance. obtained immortality by an incident that took place when she and her pirate crew landed on bermeja. doesn't cope particularly well with not being in charge (lots of banter with louis). wants to find out more about her condition. a bit of a jokester, in a lovable arsehole sort of way. has plenty of piercings (a few in her nose, her lip, LOTS in her ears, also has her eyebrow and nips pierced) and tattoos (a kraken on her right arm, a lobster on her left, lots of constellations on her whole body. also names of her various gfs). also, if that wasn't obvious, she has muscles. cool brave show-stopping etc etc etc

nastia 'nastenka' sergeyevna [redacted] - 12 and a half years old. infj. russian. ex-student in a petersburg middle school, now a smuggler/hitchhiker. daughter to scientist sergey ivanovich [redacted] whose main area of expertise was sannikov land. when her father's life became compromised, she basically hitchhiked her way out of russia with all his notes etc. currently under the care of louis grailly and co. likes: anime, ice skating, cocoa, dressing weird. this child is so neurodivergent seriously you guys. her dad taught her english, french, spanish and german. of her own accord, she's learning japanese. ace icon (squints at kisses in films like an 8 year old boy). misses her dad

audrey sainsbury de grailly – 28 years old. isfp. english. the ultimate posh art hoe. has an art history degree, sells & collects art, paints, just… a professional art hoe. girlboss with near-unlimited financial resources. actually owns the elder valley. was, for about 3-4 years, forcibly married to louis grailly (and had a kid with him). they get on better divorced than ever before. #divorcegoals or smth. louis brought her onto the project when they were still married, now she mostly studies artistic depictions of maritime horrors, atlantis, other phantom islands and whatnot. would literally kill for her kid/her partner (she's dating stuart o'donnell, more on him later)/her friends. the only heterosexual that deserves rights. (i would love to have a friend like her. srsly. audrey supremacy)

edith 'eddy' de grailly - 2 years old. enfj. french/english. daughter of louis and audrey. they're just a toddler raised by a commune of searchers. speaks a weird mix of all the languages used around them, notably: english, russian, french, latin and gaelic. adventurous and plucky. likes to experiment, be it with inserting objects into various holes at their disposal (ranging from their own earholes to electricity outlets) or mixing juice with mud. you'd rather have them on a lead on a walk, because they tend to wander off out of sheer curiosity. likes to draw

stuart o'donnell - 29 years old. isfj. irish. paints walls for a living, writes poetry in his spare time. he's a pious irish catholic. never wanted to search for atlantis, got dragged into that kicking and screaming. often feels like an outsider among all the searchers. afraid of the unknown. extremely sensitive and caring. a hopeless romantic, writes countless poems for audrey. stepdad - the dad that stepped up at its peak. often dismisses himself as a simple man, but he's really emotionally intelligent and wants all that is best for his family. actually no surprises by radiohead might be his personal anthem. catholic guilt aplenty. e x t r e m e l y repressed bisexual

He never would've thought how wrong he was and how one weekend would reveal a lifetime of secrets about the Todoroki household. I started reading Spider-Man late last year and I've recently pulled my best friend in too. Yes, of course! I’m happy to help, especially with this subject. Getting into Spider-Man comics is really exciting and I’m happy for you and your friend! The fact that in comics Peter has such a temper and can be so aggressive and violent and that Spider-Man can be scary is a very appealing thing about this character to me, and it’s both frustrating and fascinating how such a vital part of the character in comics has sort of become inconsequential in discussions about the character and in more recent comics, because basically the fact that he has a temper was in heavy play – though some writers handle it better than others – up until very recently. The arguments you’ve presented – that sometimes it’s a clone or that Peter is possessed – come up far less often than moments where he is genuinely aggressive, and it’s coming from him, no mitigating factors. (It’s important, I feel, to note that there are two black suits – the symbiote he picked up during the original Secret Wars event, and a plain cloth black suit he has worn off and on over the years. It can be hard to tell at first glance which is which, so if he’s behaving aggressively and in the black suit, remember that it may not be the symbiote. It’s really usually just him.) 

Peter fighting the Kingpin sounds like it was probably a story arc called Back in Black, which takes place in Amazing Spider-Man #539-543. This takes place after Civil War, during which Peter unmasked himself on national television – to disastrous consequences. Aunt May has been shot, and Peter is looking for the would-be assassin.

“I break his hand. It snaps like dry wood.” One thing I love about Peter when he’s angry is how his speech patterns shift – when he’s angry, his sentences become very short and direct, like punches. One after another. Back in Black is one of my favorite comic arcs, I read it all the time, and I’m psyched that it sounds like it’s drawn you in too.

But okay! Angry Peter comic recs! Let’s go! This is just a handful of comics that immediately came to mind. As you read more and more Spider-Man, you’ll probably stumble upon a ton of others. If you’ve mostly been reading Amazing Spider-Man so far, I really recommend branching out into the original runs of Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man.

Amazing Fantasy & Mythos: Spider-Man: Two versions of Peter’s origin story – the original, which is a masterpiece, and an updated, modern version, with incredible art by Paolo Rivera. Everyone thinks they know the origin story when they start reading it, because it’s so iconic – Peter bit by the spider, Ben shot by the burglar, power and responsibility. But I think it can be very useful to look at the origin and look at how angry Peter is in it. In Amazing Fantasy #15, the comic that started it all, when Aunt May and Uncle Ben present their secretly newly empowered nephew with a microscope, Peter thinks to himself that he’ll take care of them, but the rest of the world can “go hang.” I think it’s important that a lot of the goodness the character displays is something that has grown in him, through his connection to others and through his love for them, not something that was inherently there. In keeping with that, one of the easiest ways to set him off is to hurt someone he loves.

Amazing Spider-Man #121-122: The Night Gwen Stacy Died. Following the death of Gwen Stacy, Peter hunts down Norman Osborn.

“So now it comes down to it, doesn’t it, Peter? Do you stay – and help your friend? Or do you go find revenge – simple, vicious revenge? Not much of a contest… is there?” I think there’s some real ugliness in the depths of Peter’s anger, like here in this scene where he chooses between staying with drug addled Harry, calling and calling for his help, or hunting down Norman for revenge, and that it’s really important to the character and the story, how ugly that anger can be. 

Spectacular Spider-Man #75: The Black Cat makes her re-entrance into her life and she and Peter go up against Doctor Octopus, to disastrous results.

Spectacular Spider-Man #107–110: The Death of Jean DeWolff. When a police captain Peter was close to is murdered, Peter finds himself on the hunt for her killer.

Spider-Man vs Wolverine: While on assignment for the Bugle in Germany, a coworker of Peter’s is murdered, and Peter finds himself entangled in Wolverine’s personal life.

Spectacular Spider-Man #120: Peter takes on an arsonist in a burning building.

Spectacular Spider-Man #123: When a hostage situation isn’t what it appears, Peter violently loses his temper.

Amazing Spider-Man #284-288: Gang War. With a gang war well underway in New York City, Peter clashes with Daredevil over how to handle the Kingpin.

Kraven’s Last Hunt: (Web of Spider-Man #31, Amazing Spider-Man #293, Spectacular Spider-Man #131, Web of Spider-Man #32, Amazing Spider-Man #294, Spectacular Spider-Man #132) After Kraven literally buries Spider-Man and assumes his identity, Peter finds himself looking for payback. 

Spectacular Spider-Man #134-136: A sequel to The Death of Jean DeWolff. Sin-Eater’s been released from prison, Peter sees the consequences of the kind of damage he can inflict up close and personal, and wars with his own guilt. 

Spectacular Spider-Man #173: At the Bugle Christmas party, personal tensions come a head between Peter and Nick Katzenberg, a slimy tabloid photographer.

Spectacular Spider-Man #200: The death of Harry Osborn. 

As a general Spider-Man rec, I really recommend the lead up to this, the greatest issue of all time, starting from Spectacular Spider-Man #178 and reading through #200. It’s some really incredible storytelling with some really incredible art. 

Spectacular Spider-Man v2 #6-10: At the end of this Doc Ock story, Peter makes Otto beg him not to kill him. 

Amazing Spider-Man v2 (1999) #30-35: A mysterious stranger comes to town offering potential revelations about the nature of Peter’s powers. Basically, Spider-Man does Dracula, but with more radiation. In my opinion, very few people, especially modern Spider-Man writers, manage to tap into Peter’s inner well of rage and the inherent steeliness of him as well as J. Michael Straczynski, who also wrote Back in Black.

Amazing Spider-Man v2 #46-48: Doctor Strange warns Spider-Man about oncoming danger as an otherwordly wasp monster starts to dismantle Peter’s life – in whatever way she can

Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1-12: An unknown foe has kidnapped Aunt May, and Peter’s running out of time to find her.

American Son: (Amazing Spider-Man #595-599) Norman Osborn is the head of HAMMER, replacement of SHIELD, leading America forward. He wants Harry to be his heir. Peter is not okay with this.

Grim Hunt: (Amazing Spider-Man #634-637) Someone’s hunting spiders, and Peter gets drawn into the web. Speaking of Peter’s temper and violent streak, both this and the above American Son feature one very specific thing he does when he’s really mad, where he sticks his hand to his enemy’s face and PULLS.

Hey. So. I'm an inactive member. When I first prayed about the BoM, the answer came in a very specific and powerful way. So I thought at the time anyway. For a long time after that I couldn't get anything like that (or anything discernible at all really) as a response to prayers. A while ago I returned to the place I offered that first prayer and asked a question, and asked that the answer came in the same way it came the first time. It did, but the answer was wrong. Thoughts?

Hey there! thanks for stopping in. first, i want to discuss a little bit the answers between these two very specific occasions and all the times you feel like it was hard to discern answers. It is extremely hard once you’ve had wonderful and powerful experiences with the spirit to fine tune yourself to the little more subtle feelings of the spirit. They are so small and quiet .. almost unnoticeable. This is the most common way the spirit communicates with us, and it takes a long time to learn how the spirit is communicating with us. Sometimes... the answer that The Lord is giving us, is no answer.  I was studying this recently and will touch on explaining this again later.  I know from personal experience that sometimes once we have a strong experience we feel like that is how we will get most answers when that is unlikely. when I first seriously studied and prayed about the Book of Mormon   I didn’t feel like I had an answer for months, I was expecting a Moroni 10:3-5 answer... Just like other people I know had experienced. I wondered what I was doing wrong, I didn’t doubt the book.. I just felt ignored and was waiting for that confirmation. I remember kneeling down and probably quite rudely expressing to Father how ignored I felt, asking why He wouldn’t confirm the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon to me...  as i prayed these words came clearly into my head... more clear than anything  “ you already know it is true so why do you keep asking me” This was exactly what I needed. Because I did already know... that knowledge came through reading and studying (I am also an extremely candid person, i don't do sugar coating things) It made me rethink why I kept asking for something I already knew... But is was 100% not what I expected. We need to be prepared for that. On the subject of praying again and receiving answers that may be wrong or different... remember the gift of discernment. we are not restricted from other influences... remember the first vision?  Joseph smith was overcome by a demon... a very being and follower of Satan.. trying to stop Him from doing the very thing that would bring to pass The restoration of Christ’s Gospel enabling us to walk back to our Father in Heaven... He didn’t want it. so He tried to stop it. I cannot say anything specific on that because I am not you.. I do not know your question or the answer you were given. On the subject of the Spirit.. and sometimes our answers not being what we expect.. or sometimes no answer.  there is an institute lesson on this and many conference talks.  if you would like some let me know and i can post links. but here are some quotes out of that lesson :“We do not always receive inspiration or revelation when we request it. Sometimes we are delayed in receiving revelation, and sometimes we are left to our own judgment and understanding based on study and reason. We cannot force spiritual things. It must be so. Our life’s purpose to obtain experience and to develop faith would be frustrated if our Heavenly Father enlightened us immediately on every question or directed us in every act. We must reach conclusions and make decisions and experience the consequences in order to develop self-reliance and faith.”   - Elder Dallin H. Oaks “He is our perfect Father. He loves us beyond our capacity to understand. He knows what is best for us. He sees the end from the beginning. He wants us to act to gain needed experience.“When He answers yes, it is to give us confidence.“When He answers no, it is to prevent error.“When He withholds an answer, it is to have us grow through faith in Him, obedience to His commandments, and a willingness to act on truth. We are expected to assume accountability by acting on a decision that is consistent with His teachings without prior confirmation. We are not to sit passively waiting or to murmur because the Lord has not spoken. We are to act.“Most often what we have chosen to do is right. He will confirm the correctness of our choices His way. That confirmation generally comes through packets of help found along the way. We discover them by being spiritually sensitive. They are like notes from a loving Father as evidence of His approval.If, in trust, we begin something which is not right, He will let us know before we have gone too far. We sense that help by recognizing troubled or uneasy feelings.”  Honestly this reply is probably going to get too long. All I can invite you to do is to read the book of Mormon (and the Bible) to pay attention to those thoughts and feelings that come into your heart and mind as you read. Watch the latest general conference if you haven’t already. I promise you .. you will find answers as you listen and read!  Talk to you Father in Heaven, ask to recognize your answers. Be patient with yourself...  I dont know if you’d feel comfortable at church... or even feel like you can attend. Seriously though, I have no idea. It’d probably depend on how I feel at the time and how my possible future wife would feel. On the off chance I ever marry a Japanese woman though I’d insist we name our son Goku, but that’s a very specific situation so I don’t see it happening.

My mother, my paternal grandparents, and all of my old pets that have passed away.

Are we talking in a romantic relationship ending sense or a friendship ending sense? If it’s the former I have no idea, no dating experience. It does take me a while to get over not talking to a friend anymore, but I cope pretty easily after a while. I like keeping to myself for the most part, I don’t have a lot of friends offline so it’s not too big a deal for me.

Pretty meh, had a number of ups and downs, some really bad days, and some very good ones. And of course I discovered just how unbearably frustrating and depressing politics can really be and how much America and my own country make me want to bang my head against a wall. So, not a great year, but for me personally I coped alright. I just wish I’d done more to move forward with my life, like finding a full time job. i’m stuck in part time and I’m still looking.

I don’t think I’ve cried for that kind of reason. I usually only cry if I’m very sad or depressed over something, extreme annoyance tends to manifest in anger, ranting and fidgeting for me.

I named my first cat Socks.

I Didn’t realize there had ever been any cast changes on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers until Kimberly left because I missed the episode writing out Jason, Zack and Trini, so I somehow didn’t notice that the black and yellow rangers were being played by actors of completely different races in the later parts of season 2 and season 3 until years after the fact. No, seriously, I was just that stupid as a really little kid.

Once when I was a kid I drew on the walls of my parents bedroom to make the place look like a jungle, as well as drawing whiskers and animal markings on me and my sister’s faces. I don’t remember it honestly, but I can tell my parents were mad about it.
