My favorite details and little moments in Red, White, and Royal Blue

I’ve been thoroughly annotating Red, White, and Royal Blue, and even though I’ve read it nearly a dozen times in the last few years, there’s so many things I didn’t fully appreciate and little details I didn’t notice until I took the time to read every single line (I read very fast. Somehow I retain the information. I don’t know either.)

So here is a list of some of my favorite little details and moments that I appreciate a lot more lately:

1. “Nobody needs to know how hard he’s kicking underwater”

2. Amy is Ellen’s favorite secret service agent

3. Growing up June and Alex were forced to talk about their feelings

4. Zahra is a Howard graduate + from New Orleans

5. The lists Alex hid under a cushion as a kid that he still creates to make things make sense in his too-fast mind

7. Henry walks around barefoot at Kensington, which isn’t important but is something I find interesting for no reason other than the fact that being barefoot is a horrible experience for me personally

these are literally some of the dumbest tags ive ever seen. like. there’s SO much here that’s untrue, including the empathy part. “love couldnt have fixed him as a child” have you considered he didnt need to be fixed??? Did you even watch the show???? Love would have ABSOLUTELY helped him, and he didn’t need to be fixed.

like i shouldnt be surprised that people on here are Siding On The Side Of Child Abuse but… and just like god there’s so many Factual Errors here, shitty and cruel attitude aside. “torturing animals for fun” and the kid in question looks distressed the whole time & a bunch of parallels indicate that he was trying to free the rabbit, but god forbid we look beneath our first surface impressions, right?

and also, the whole “before the lab” thing makes me insane because it acts like everything in his life was fine prior to the lab. meanwhile, he talks about how he was treated as being broken PRIOR to the lab and how his mother despised him PRIOR to the lab and how she wanted to send him away to an abusive predator scientist PRIOR to the lab and that’s just the surface level shit let alone all of the subtext about what his life was like pre-lab.

and not only is it impossible for him to have been trancing victor and killing slice at the same time & theres so much weirdness there, even if he straight up murdered virginia and alice got killed as part of it, it’s not like it happened because He’s Inherently Bad And Evil. I think he was in the right to kill virginia!!!!! Like sorry but wanting to send him away to Brenner????? She had it coming. Alice didn’t, but again, there’s so much weirdness around that AND even if he did kill her, the whole thing could have been prevented if people (Virginia) weren’t trying to send him off to the lab/fix him.

Like it’s insane to me that people will watch Dart’s arc about how creatures from the UD aren’t inherently evil and how Dustin’s love made a huge impact on Dart and yet will also go “oh yep mhm the duffers wrote this Literal Human Child to be Evil and Bad and Broken and he Needs To Be Fixed but hes so broken that not even love can fix him”.

Like. Op is the one with the real lack of empathy here & I sure hope they don’t extend this viewpoint to the abused and autistic kids/people in their life. I don’t feel bad calling the tags dumb because they ARE dumb and literally factually inaccurate and they’re cruel and contributing to the stigma around people who are low empathy (and henry isn’t even low empathy).

Hello hello, anon! Thanks for the ask! Sorry that this took so long! Okay, first things first: Yes, they're both neurodivergent/autistic. While they're both unaware of that fact (because let's be real, the 1980s time period wasn't as aware of that kind of thing as we do now), they both do kinda understand that they both have their little routine everyday and sometimes they both need some time to themselves. It's that little mutual silence they have with each other when they both work together on their own thing. They both also don't like crowds, but they've just learned to deal with it. And of course, they both love learning about each other's interests and tend to help each other with them! More headcanons under the cut + bonus for Puppet-Charlie and Henry stuff!

Some more headcanons around 1983-era:

Henry and Charlie both love tinkering with their interests - Henry tinkers with robots and inventions and gadgets and whatnot, while Charlie tends to tinker with her old toys and usually modifies them to her liking.

Henry was a former toymaker that worked in a relatively modest toy company before he had agreed to partner with William's business venture, so he'd sometimes make her toys when she was younger. Charlie also grew up with some stopmotion movies and shows that she'd loved, so when Henry gave her a camera on one of her birthdays, she would make stopmotion animations using the toys he gives her and sometimes modifies the toys to be more flexible, or to change their appearance for the stopmotion animation. Charlie also becomes interested in things like puppeteering and miniature sculpting.

They both love drawing! Henry's art has more boxy and mechanical concepts and the like because of his work and just mostly drafting stuff (sometimes he draws people, usually doesn't end up liking them), while Charlie just draw concepts for her little puppets/miniatures, similarly mechanical like her father's, and has a hard time drawing people.

Henry starts to cook more after his wife's late passing for the sake of Charlie, since Charlie tended to miss her mom's cooking. He tries his best. Charlie usually helps him!

Henry makes sure to attend Charlie's baseball games.

They definitely had went to Disneyland at least once, courtesy of William. They both had a grand old time there!

Charlie's flannel shirt was a hand-me-down from Henry's! She loves matching with her father, so she adopted it for herself. Whenever Henry sketches/works on the animatronics, Charlie just sits down and watches her father work/draw. Henry doesn't mind, and usually asks about a few ideas or concepts he has and asks Charlie if it's interesting.

BONUS: Post 1987 Puppet-Charlie and Henry stuff!

Henry learns to sew more clothing to reuse Charlie's old clothes so Puppet-Charlie could get to wear some of her past outfits if she wanted to. Thrift stores and garage sales are their best friends!

Puppet-Charlie sometimes constricts herself around her father. She's clingy, but Henry doesn't mind at all.

Puppet-Charlie doesn't really need to sleep, so if Henry falls asleep or needs to sleep, she watches over him.

Henry and Puppet-Charlie used to hate long drives. Now they've learned to love it.

Rainy days on the other hand... it's complicated.

Eating "together" was pretty hard for them at first (since Henry is the only one eating), but after some time, they eventually gotten used to it.

Puppet-Charlie had attempted to drive, and she's still learning with Henry's guidance! Henry is just scared because Puppet-Charlie tended to always miss the stop-lights/signs.

Henry retro-fitted an actual jack-in-the-box music box so that Puppet-Charlie can listen to it whenever she wants.

The only times that Puppet-Charlie haven't been weirdly remarked to (by teens and adults anyway, most kids are intrigued/awed by Puppet-Charlie) is Halloween. Both Henry and Puppet-Charlie just kind of deals with it and had gotten used to it. It's not like Henry doesn't get weird remarks either from carrying/walking around with this tall lanky "daughter", so they mostly avoid people unless necessary.

I'd love a combined comedy/horror where Henry goes on that road trip because he's scared Gansey's come back wrong. And we keep seeing him being like oh my god this is the proof and it's just normal Gansey stuff that he hasn't experienced yet due to only knowing him for 6 months. He works up the courage to mention something to Blue because he's worried for her and she's just like dude. This guy has always stared absently into the distance while muttering about nothing. C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER

Did you know Big Engine Brawl by @spaceboid and the rest of the lovely team makes me just a little insane. It’s probably one of my favorite ttte things anyone has ever done ever.

Everything about it is just so prefect and right. Especially with Gordon my blorbo Gordon. I’ll be doing some autistic analysis. Spoilers under the cut!

OKAY. So this has captured gordon so perfectly in my humble opinion. His first song Indignation (perfect name by the way) is GRAND and very idk how to describe it but it feels fancy. Even his facial expressions here are very indignant and apathetic. He’s not really taking this seriously because he thinks he can EASILY win. And I love how later near the end of the song the chart for Gordon’s part gets so overly complicated and more complex. It’s like how he thinks so highly of himself that he pushes himself past what he can physically do. He’s so determined to win that he does more than he can manage because he’s a big engine, he’s supposed to be able to manage it. And he thinks he’s so much better than this random small thing that he’s showing off. And if you learn anything on Sodor, it’s to not show off. AND THEN RIGHT AS HIS SONG IS SUPPOSED TO END HE FUCKING BREAKS AND HURTS HIMSELF BECAUSE HE PUSHED HIMSELF TOO FAR. HE GOT SMACKED DOWN FOR SHOWING OFF. Just like the hill. Also I love that his buffers fall off it reminded me of the cgi episode where his buffers fell off and he had to get huge diesel buffers.

AND HIM CALLING ON HENRY TO HELP. ITS LIKE HOW WHENEVER HE FUCKS UP OR PUSHES HIMSELF TOO FAR HE HAS TO CALL ON OTHERS TO SUPPORT HIM. LIKE EDWARD AND HENRY AND THOMAS.

God and the big finale sone with all 3 of them. I’m gonna go insane I’m gonna eat concrete. Gordon’s angry flushed face as he’s finally taking BF seriously. He’s so FOCUSED. I LVOE how they all work together. At points where James and Henry take up the lead part of the song and Gordon is providing harmony support. I am running around my room I am stimming so hard I think I might explode actually. JAMES AND HENRY’S JUST TIRED APATHETIC FACES TO IT ALL. THEY ARE SO DONE. NOT ONLY WITH BF AND GF BUT WITH GORDON’S UNNEEDED FRUSTRATION ABOUT IT. ALSO WHEN JAMES AND HENRY FIRST COME FOR BACKUP THEIR MUSICAL STYLE REFLECTS THAT. HENRY’S IS LESS GRAND THEN GORDON BUT ITS FAST AND DANGEROUS IT REMINDS ME OF THE IMPACT OF THE FLYING KIPPER. AND JAMES HAS A SLIGHT SWING IN HIS SECTION A LOT LIKE HIS MUSIC.

In short this captures Gordon’s character absolutely perfectly in ways that will make me autistically infodump about it to anyone who will listen. I may have gotten some music things wrong because I am not a musician at all. But I do know Gordon’s character and this is perfect. 1000000/10 PLEASE GO PLAY AND SUPPORT IT

But I am an optimist and I will focus on the good which is that they're doing the characters incredible justice, and if I see one person try to deny their chemistry I will A Clockwork Orange their ass to this trailer for days. Because That Is Alex and Henry. That's them in front of my eyes and I think they're in very good hands and this is the most coherent thing I can write I'm still crying-/srs

Well, Well...Look Whose Limbs Are Still Intact (AKA the 4th NINA installment)

After seeing The First Shadow, I'm revisiting NINA installment #3!

Previously, I had speculated that El may have committed the 4.07 massacre after all, because there are multiple shots where the bodies don't have the Vecna eyes/snapped limbs.

For example, the difference:

And she may still have, I won't rule that out entirely. However...After seeing TFS, I have questions.

In TFS, when "Henry" doesn't attack in classic Vecna-style (which we actually witness firsthand just as often as we witness traditional Vecna killings), he attacks similarly to the way El does:

(it's not exactly the same, but the end results are very similar)

It's not Vecna style. Point blank.

When Vecna kills, the limbs always go first, and the eyes go last. We see that in Prancer, we see it in Virginia, and we see it in 1986. Limbs, then jaw, then eyes.

As far as we know, "Henry" on his own doesn't snap limbs at all, let alone jaws. The victims (see: Mr. Newby and Inmate 58361) are usually awake, aware, and screaming in agony, and no bones are broken. The eyes are the only thing to go, and they go fairly quickly.

Not Vecna-style.

So now, of course, I have to look back at her:

I know we've all seen this scene (and these pictures) so, so many times. Most likely from me, and most likely in another part of this analysis series. However, I want to run through this one part specifically shot by shot because it's EXTREMELY funny to me.

We've got Jumpsuit-A Guy (I'll just call him JA for short) attacking El:

So you'd assume he's both the One making El's eyes bleed that way and the One making her limbs twist/snap, right? Because he's doing what Vecna does?

(He isn't, but they want you to think he's doing what Vecna does. They're very good at hiding things about jumpsuit guys.)

But check this out.

We never see teen El with: a) twisting/snapping limbs b) the squeezing eye blood pattern c) JA Guy on screen at the same time. We see everything in tight shots. (Of course, always managing to keep that mirror in view behind One without showing us El. That's a secret tool that'll help us later.)

I've put the shot progressions in order from L -> R, top -> bottom, like lines in a book:

So, from this scene alone, we actually have very little evidence that JA did both things.

And you might go "Oh James, but look at the subtitles earlier!"

I have to ask: Are the breaking bones in the room with us right now?

Because all I see is El flailing, which is consistent with the next subtitle:

But...subtitling aside. I have better evidence that he didn't do both things. The Duffers thought they could pull a fast one on me, but the jokes on them—I'm an autistic freak who liked the I-Spy books way too much as a kid.

Can anyone explain this away?

And yes, the guy in the final screenshot is a bloody jumpsuit guy, even if I can't tell you with 100% certainty which jumpsuit he is. He's just moving really fast:

Anyway. That aside, have a look at the blood pattern on El.

The top gowns have blood on the left hip (twisting limbs El), the bottom gowns have blood on the right hip (squeeze eye blood El).

And I thought okay, well, let's run through some explanations:

Maybe somehow we're seeing that lower splotch by her left knee? First off, the stain's too big. Second, it's not the right shape. Third, it's hand-level. Definitely not the knee splotch.

Maybe, by some impossible 3D modeling limb fuck-up that swapped her hands, we're seeing her from behind? Well, let's see...

Nope! As far as we know, El doesn't have blood on her back, impossible limbs aside.

It seems, almost, like they shot her right side and mirrored it.

See?

So that's straight up not the same girl. Squeezed bloody eyes El and twisting limbs El are different girls.

That, my friends, means we have a brand-new version of teen El in the massacre.

That's consistent with what I talked about here, the scene at the beginning of NINA where teen El turns around twice:

Which is also the scene where we get two different doors in the Rainbow Room with teen El...And it all tracks with the doubled/mirrored rainbow room BTS.

So yes, we definitely have at least two versions of NINA running with teen El! One where her eyes bleed squeeze-style, and one where her bones break.

This means that whatever's going on in that scene with JA, he's not responsible for all of it, because the El in the "correct" gown has the eye blood, but the El in the "mirrored" gown has the twisting limbs. Two different girls, two different guys.

So, then, the next logical question to ask is: What is Jumpsuit-A Guy responsible for?

With the way JA's attack on El is filmed (the camera cuts and tight shots), it's nearly impossible to tell which things he's doing.

Disclaimer: None of the childrens' bodies are killed in a traditional Vecna manner. None of the jaws are broken. There's something else going on here, and I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mirrored version of TFS Henry's attack style (read: limbs first or limbs only rather than eyes only). So when I say "Vecna style", that's me referring to a limbs-first style.

Moving on...I daresay JA doesn't kill "like Vecna". Let me explain.

JA is the only guy we see actively killing in the Rainbow Room, and they're generous enough to swing/pan around to him in a continuous shot for it! No camera cuts there, no extra doubt introduced.

[TFS Brenner voice] They want to be caught so bad, I wonder why they even bother lying to me 🙄

Check it out:

Eyes go first. No twisting or broken limbs. That is JA's attack style. It's not even close to Vecna style.

If you're like me, you'll go:

"Oh, but James! Look at the body behind JA! The eyes are missing, and a couple of the other bodies look like their bones might be broken."

And you'd be right!

I'm not particularly concerned about that in relation to JA, though, since: a) We know a lot of the backdrop is divorced from the actual action (as I mentioned in here irt blood and impact crater separation), and multiple different corpse positions appear within the same jumpsuit, and there are multiple versions of corpses with non-twisted limbs:

As far as I know...as of right now, we haven't found a solid, all-encompassing pattern in the surrounding bodies in relation to the all the jumpsuits.

b) We quite literally just witnessed the pattern of his kill style in the swing-around shot.

And, while I can't 100% confirm that either of these bodies belong to JA, since we don't have confirmation of JA with any non-twisted limb bodies...Once again, I have to ask:

Are the breaking bones in the room with us right now? Because I personally didn't see any twisted, snapped bones.

And here?

Well, well...

Yes, I'm aware those are both across camera cuts. And no, I can't 100% confirm which of the Ones killed those Twos. There may be multiple that don't kill Vecna-style!

It's entirely possible that most of them don't kill Vecna-style, and the Vecna makeup is just an overlay (maybe one that glitches or has missing uploads within NINA. Not a Duffers production error, but an HNL production error).

I will say that JA is the strongest candidate for being one of those non-Vecna-style guys, though.

"Maybe you just caught JA too early in the process for breaking bones?"

I mean, maybe, sure! I can acknowledge that possibility.

It's still not the limbs-first style, though. The order is all wrong, and it still doesn't match what we're shown in the attack on El, gown discrepancy aside. When JA's attacking El, we see the isolated limb-twisting bit before we see the eyes. Meanwhile his attack on Two starts with the eyes. Two's eyes bleed, and his limbs are still intact.

That means JA likely isn't responsible for the limb-twisting bits in the attack on El.

So, my point remains the same: There's at least one One who doesn't attack Vecna-style, and instead attacks like TFS "Henry"—Eyes bloody off the bat, bones not targeted. JA is the strongest candidate I've seen for being one of them. (Put a pin in this. I'm going to talk about it later.)

That supports the two distinct attack styles I was talking about here.

Two does have the cloudy, Vecna-ish eyes, though, and somebody's bones are snapping somewhere...So I genuinely wouldn't be shocked if this, like the gate/dematerialization shot (which I talked about in here), is a dual-outcome overlay of the two attack styles. (More on this in a bit! Hold onto this thought.)

Now, I want to go a layer deeper.

Keeping all that in mind, I want to talk about this bit the released 4.07 script:

Let me explain.

Baby El, per the script, is through the mirror, which tracks with this jumpsuit discrepancy:

JA and JC are both on teen El's side of the mirror. JE is a "through the mirror" jumpsuit, placing him with Baby El.

You know who else is actually "through the mirror", both in script and on film?

JD, who, like JE, we only see when we push through the mirror:

And he is, as predicted, associated with a baby El.

I originally thought they had cut that second "through the mirror" bit when they changed to have One break the mirror instead of just being pinned to it, and that we were just seeing baby El in teen El's place.

They didn't cut it, and we have no idea if what Baby El does is the same as whatever Teen El's doing on the other side of the mirror while we can't see her.

So, tl;dr: JE and JD are definitely different from JA and JC, not just based on jumpsuit, but also by location relative to the mirror and the associated ages of their Els.

JD and JE exist through the mirror (read: with baby El). JA and JC exist not through the mirror (read: with teen El).

Which...All of this becomes even funnier when you look at this guy, the only time we see baby El's face and a One who's still somewhat recognizable on screen together in this sequence:

And like...first off, it's straight up not the same guy. Second off, they're hiding his identity from us.

Just look.

And even at the most surface-level? Look at the hair. He's not the same guy.

Stunt double, 3D-model, either way. All of this could and arguably should be lined up properly, based on the VFX team's capabilities. Both guys are being dematerialized, but they're not the same guy. I just can't tell you with any certainty which guy he is.

However, this all means the guy we see together on screen with baby El here? He may very well be the guy watching her here:

The mirror matches, and it's totally different from JD, who gets this:

(He has the mirror going the opposite way.)

And because he's through the mirror with baby El, this mystery man could be JE, since he's not JD. Again, I just can't say for sure because all we see of JE is his chest and left side, but all we see of secret third guy is his right side, which is so far away that I don't feel comfortable making a claim re: his identity...and JE is deliberately shot mirrored so as not to reveal his right side.

They're deliberately hiding his identity re: jumpsuit pattern. If I could see his chest, or even parts of his arms, I could tell you for sure which One he is. But I can't...so. Here we are, missing variables.

Shaking the Duffers until they drop loot (J?'s jumpsuit pattern).

Anyway!

Remember when I said they were hiding baby Els from us? This is what I'm talking about. Two different guys, two different girls, and they're deliberately hiding both the face blood of one of the Els and the jumpsuit pattern of the One with her.

Now, remember that those few thoughts I asked you to put pins in? The ones about the mirror being kept in frame with JA, not being able to confirm which One killed that intact-limbs Two, and Two's possible dual-overlay/bones snapping somewhere?

Yeah. This is where all that comes in: The Speculation.

JA and JC are on teen El's side of the mirror. JD and JE...and secret third jumpsuit...are on baby El's side of the mirror.

We can confirm that JA takes the eyes first (read: he doesn't attack Two or El in the bone-breaking/Vecna style), and keeping that mirror in frame during the attack on El implies that someone on the other side of it (read: with baby El) should attack the same way. This supports the theory that we're missing a baby El with the squeezed bloody eye pattern, likely the same baby El that we see in BTS pictures.

Can I say with 100% certainty that JA doesn't break bones? No. However...For the moment, I can comfortably hypothesize (say, 65% certainty), that he's the not the one breaking bones on teen El's side of the mirror.

A logical hypothesis based on that is that Jumpsuit-C Guy (the later Brenner-faced One who's purported by the show to have become Vecna) is the one breaking bones/attacking Vecna-style on teen El's side of the mirror.

All these timelines, the different jumpsuits, seem to be happening simultaneously. It's not a massive stretch for me to hypothesize that this factor is what's contributing to the phantom bone-snapping sound and cloudy eyes we see on Two, despite Jumpsuit-A Guy not snapping his bones (much the same as the dual overlay with the gate and the dematerialization).

We're not shown any concrete evidence as to what kill style JE uses, nor do we have any hard conclusions in regard to his fate, but based on his location relative to the mirror, I'm comfortable hypothesizing that he might be this weird, mystery One with the Vecna-eyes baby El. They don't let us see which attack style JD uses or which baby El eye-blood pattern he's associated with. However, based on the conclusion that he's likely not the guy associated with Vecna-eyes baby El...for the moment, I feel comfortable hypothesizing that he does not attack in the bone-breaking/Vecna-style way, and instead attacks squeeze-style and is associated with the BTS-only Baby El.

This is further supported by the fact that a) JD and Hallway Guy seem to be the same person, and Hallway Guy quick-kills the same way El does:

It would stand to reason, then, that his slow kills would be similar to hers.

b) JD goes on to become Mindflayer Guy, not Vecna

So, to kind of sum all that up:

JA: Definitely on teen El's side of the mirror, associated with right-hip blood and squeezed bloody eyes teen El. He's probably one of the guys who has an attack style that doesn't break bones first/the squeeze-style attack. We don't know where he ends up, but he may be linked to the Mindflayer.

JC: Definitely on teen El's side of the mirror, possible associated with left-hip blood and twisting limbs Teen El. He may be one of the guys who breaks bones first. He supposedly becomes BrenVecna.

JD: Definitely on Baby El's side of the mirror, never seen on Teen El's side. Associated with mystery blood Baby El. No confirmed attack style, but based on the secretive behavior irt: Baby El's eye blood, he may be one of the guys with an attack style that doesn't break bones/the squeeze-style attack. He's Mindflayer guy.

JE: Baby El's side of the mirror, never seen on Teen El's side. No confirmed attack style or associations. May be associated with Vecna-eyes Baby El, given the secrecy around the mystery man's jumpsuit pattern, which means he may be a bone-breaking guy. We don't know where he ends up, but he may linked to Vecna.

reading update: july 2023

I don't have a cool and witty opening for this one. I read a fuck of a lot of books this month and I want to tell you about them LET'S GO

Black Water Sister (Zen Cho, 2021) - Black Water Sister has a very fun premise: a closeted lesbian and unemployed recent graduate moves back to Malaysia with her parents and is already having a bad enough time when she starts hearing the voice of her dead grandmother, who turns out to have been deeply involved in supernatural organized crime. our hapless protagonist becomes a medium against her will, and has to navigate to world of Malaysian spirits and superstition to lay her grandma to rest. unfortunately the actual style of the story wasn't more me; although definitely adult fiction, the prose is breezy in a way I affiliate strongly with YA, which is not to my personal taste but is still so hashtag valid. if you're one of the countless people trying to make that jump from YA to adult fiction and you like queer urban fantasy then Black Water Sister might be a great fit for you, although I should provide a warning for a pretty surprisingly graphic near-rape in the book's climax that really took me by surprise in a story that's otherwise pretty zany in its violence.

The Bride Test (Helen Hoang, 2019) - I think I said last month that Alexis Hall's A Lady for a Duke was the best so far of the romance-novel-every-month scheme I'm trying to pull off this year. the Bride Test has pretty swiftly displaced it; have I finally discovered the really good romance novels? (worry not; I know what I'm reading for August and my hopes are. low.) our two protagonists, Mỹ/Esme (her chosen American/English name) and Khai, are both genuinely charming and are pretty strong characters independent of each other, which cannot be said for A Lot of romance protags. despite the absolute insanity of how they met (yes, Khai's mother went to Vietnam and offered, uneducated a poor single mother a tourist visa in exchange for trying to seduce her autistic son. yes, that's shady. don't think about it too hard) and Esme waiting until WAY too late in the game to reveal the existence of HER LIVING HUMAN CHILD, I liked this book a lot. it's silly and heartfelt and I had fun; what else do you need? 5/5 eggplant emojis.

Giovanni's Room (James Baldwin, 1956) - there's probably nothing I can say about Giovanni's Room that I could say that someone smarter and gayer hasn't already said, but god. it really is breathtaking. I so often see this book talked about as a gay tragedy, and honestly that feels like almost too glib of a description. it's a really meticulous dissection of white male masculinity and the claustrophobic constraints there of, and our narrator's claustrophobic fear of divesting himself from the power that he's entitled to by virtue of being a white American man perceived as a heterosexual. this man would rather live in repressed misery for his entire life than risk being like those effeminate faggots at the gay club, but spoiler alert! being miserable doesn't make you better than your fellow fags; it just means you're miserable AND a fag. sharp and painful and so so so smart. also I'm going to summon @zaricats because I was supposed to tell you what I thought about this book. oops!

Lone Women (Victor LaValle, 2023) - okay so listen. did I just say Black Water Sister wasn't really for me because of the simplistic prose? yes. did I really enjoy the very sparse, straightforward style of Lone Women? also yes. leave me alone, I contain contradictions. anyway, Lone Women is a ripping piece of historical fiction spliced with supernatural secrets, based on LaValle's research into 19th century Black women homesteaders who made their lives in Montana. LaValle opens on a scene of irresistible intrigue - Adelaide Henry, lone woman, sets out for Montana with a mysteriously heavy trunk after burning down her family's California farm with her parents' mutilated corpses inside. and boy, does it escalate from there! it's a story about isolation and community and the people who are failed by so-called close knit small towns, and the ways in which vulnerable people band together to protect one another. it also makes the compelling point that maybe, just maybe, the real monsters were your local transphobe and her husband's lynch mob all along.

Black Disability Politics (Sami Schalk, 2022) - what a cool book! Schalk's argument begins with the idea that Black disability politics are distinct from predominantly white mainstream disability politics, and are therefore often overlooked in conversation, activism, and academia. Schalk analyzes the historical work of the Black Panthers and the National Black Women's Health Project to showcase what she describes as Black disability politics in action. in Schalk's conception, Black disability politics take a much more holistic approach to disability, conceptualizing as just one form (and, frequently, as a result of) of oppression tangled up with a myriad of others that cannot be meaningfully addressed when they're treated as separate issues. the book concludes in interviews with contemporary Black disability activists and organizers that shed light on ways in which the wider movement is often unwelcoming to folks of color, and an exhortation from Schalk for readers to continue the conversation well beyond the confines of the book. in a killer show of praxis, the entire book has been made available to read in PDF form, and I strongly recommend giving it a look!

The River of Silver (S.A. Chakraborty, 2022) - mentally I am kicking myself a little for waiting so long to read this continuation of my beloved Daevabad trilogy, because it did take me a minute to get back into the swing and mythology of the world and that did make me feel unpleasantly like I wasn't appreciating these character-focused short stories as much as I could be. but even having said that - man! fuck I love the world of Daevabad, and I adore these characters so much. getting to see them again, even briefly, was a delight, and I am once again congratulating Nahri and Ali on being the invention of heterosexual romance. (also, on a related note, but I ADORE the way Chakraborty writes her characters having crushes. they crush SO hard and it's very sweet. these books are such big drama all the way down.)

Men We Reaped (Jesmyn Ward, 2013) - an absolute powerhouse of a memoir, and devastating the whole way down. in Men We Reaped Ward attempts to make sense of a series of tragedies that befell her community when five young Black men - beginning with Ward's younger brother - died between 2000 and 2004. the word 'unflinching' is hopelessly played out, but it's difficult to figure out how to describe the head-on way Ward explores each young man's life and ultimate end and her own upbringing. the men in Ward's history - her brother, the friends she lost, her father and other male relatives - are never idealized; their demons, miseries, infidelities, addictions, and violence are placed on full display. but Ward is also insistent on displaying these men with dignity, compassion, empathy; showing them at their best and, most importantly, as men who were loved and deserved better than the violence that poverty and racism wrought on them. it's a furious memoir, one that will leave you mourning too.

Nimona (ND Stevenson, 2015) - did I only read this so I can make more informed complaints if/when I end up watching the netflix movie with my wife? YES. but listen, it wasn't JUST petty hater behavior. Nimona is just really good, and I think I got a lot more out of it this time around that I did when I first read it years ago. this comic is wild and unfettered and so spectacularly weird; I wish more things felt the way Nimona does. I also with more things starred small girls begging to kill cops and stage a violent overthrow of the government, that rules hard. also man I love Ballister, he's SUCH a good protagonist. he's curmudgeonly, he's deeply principled, he's held a grudge for years, he's paternal, he's even gay. what a guy!

Chewing habit. Will chew on just about anything he’s holding + reason for lip biting habit, his lips aren’t dry, just scabbed (JUST like me fr fr)

Quick and lean, with his legs being his strongest

Hyperactive and energetic when not sleep deprived

I wanna talk abt Springbonnie bcuz that’s William’s biggest outlet for whatever alterhuman shit he’s got going one

He’s probably the most comfortable in that suit than he ever is… like, ever. Springbonnie is I dunno how to explain this. Like a part of him. fursona.? yeah

Basically being in a giant rabbit suit makes many good feelings in his brain -> Easter’s his favorite holiday cuz he gets to be in the suit all day 

He was the type of kid that be running around on all fours at recess (I’m projecting I was that kid 😔✊). Totally would’ve been one of the kids that think they’re like a werewolf or something (I was also that kid)

sometimes he genuinely jsut forgets he’s human, also kind of an autistic thing. He’ll be like sitting on a chair reading a book and suddenly remember he’s a human like everyone else he sees in life and not some ambiguous rabbit-like entity

also if he’s ever walking with anyone he actually likes (henry, his kids) and they come across a wild rabbit he will point it out and will not drop it until the other person acknowledges the bunny

Other things he does that r rabbity to me

Likes dry salad, not drenched in ranch or anything, or any other dressing, just leaves and like… whatever else is in salad idk I haven’t had one in years

loves small spaces. If he’s ever overwhelmed at work he just sits under his desk for a few minutes; Henry has “lost” him at least three times to this. He always makes sure when he buys a new bed frame that he can fit under it (I can’t fit under my new one and I am still so upset abt it ☹️)

he’s a very jumpy man if that makes sense. He’s happy or excited he does that lil bouncy thing on his toes. You scared him and he goes ten feet in the air, or he just freezes. (me fr fr)

If his nose is itchy he does that nose scrunching thing

He loves fluffy clothing. Not only is it comfortable but also kinda like fur. Unfortunately there’s really not a lot of fluffy clothing fit for summer, but at least he has his robe

I think he’s also got that leporidae swag. One second he’s like a cute bunny next second he’s got the 1000 yard stare of a hare

He’s probably let random weird shit slip in conversations, like “Life would be easier if I was a bunny”, “Being human is boring”, etc. and Henry just had to get used to it

If he was alive internet-aged (this also applies to glitchtrap-William) he’d totally secretly look at bunny stuff. Like, furries, alter humans, pet regression etc.

Also he collects bunny things, like plushies, figurines, pictures. He has an entire bookcase in his room that just has a bunch of rabbit objects that he’s found while out shopping.  i might end up adding more later idk idk

Ahh, I’m happy. First episodes of Rings of Power are a few steps above my expectations and I had a really good time watching it, which was all I really wanted to begin with. Numenor hasn’t even arrived onscreen and I’m already pretty invested. 

I was actually surprised by how much I liked the Harfoot plotline, I had expected to find it really irritating and extraneous but it was so delightful to watch I was taken in. I think it was Lenny Henry’s influence, his acting was great and i’m really attached to Sadoc already. I’m STILL not sold on old meteorman Gandalf, mainly because I don’t want to see fuckin Gandalf, but also because he DOES feel very extraneous to the plot they’re driving towards. But the scenes with him are still well acted and seeing how big he is in comparison to Nori is endearing too. Liked being able to decipher the Quenya words for blessed and heat in there, which I assume was him trying to explain stars. 

Oh it’s so humiliating... I do like Lindon 😔 they are using the set really well and the shots are sumptuous and filled with interesting detail. Also good GOD I love elf politics, I love incredibly elevated elven speech that’s just so elaborate that they sound like they’re in a Shakespearean play at all times. (some of the proverbs are a little over the top but still). Yes they SHOULD sound that ridiculous. I am also very much enjoying Elrond’s character and the way they have interpreted his ‘Herald’ position in Gil-Galad’s court. Speech writer and little busy body to be sent to solve problems. I think the promos really did a disservice in calling him ‘politically ambitious’. It’s technically true but on it’s own it doesn’t accurately describe his motives, he’s being invested in his people and wanting to help. He’s a young but very noble elf and full of optimism and love for all things! He’s excited to be of use! Maybe a little too invested! Hah.  

Celebrimbor also I like so much, he’s got this 1920′s dandy vibe, he certainly feels like a jewelsmith to me. His mannerisms are so endearing and sharp, and when he speaks about the things he’s passionate about the actor actually manages to get this feeling of... a glint in his eye? Like he’s generating his own energy talking about it, very autistic of him, I love it. And I especially appreciate this much more emotive and engaged portrayal after the disastrous Shadow of Wardor nonsense. I respect them going for the precise opposite character. He even fucking cares about people beyond elves! Cares about middle-earth in fact! Oh and also! With his excitable dialogue surrounding dwarves, I have been given new hope that we WILL be seeing Narvi in later seasons. Indeed, these two episodes have really solidified in my mind what they’ve done to the timeline. It’s ALL contracted, including a lot of the aspects of characters we expect, their development has been reclaimed for the show to walk us through. We’ll see how that plays out as the years go by but I can see the logic of doing it that way. 

THE DWARVES! Oh my days the dwarves. Every dwarf scene was so gorgeous and Durin’s actor has a way of settling his body into the costume that makes him feel heavy, durable and powerful. I’ve really gone on a 180 about his design. Even this rock breaking contest, which always felt really silly to me, actually is implemented in a way that I really enjoy. Disa is just... I can’t stop thinking about her, Sophia Nomvete matches Durin’s energy so perfectly and the way she uses her eyes is simply entrancing. I just want to watch them all the time. I also really loved the cameo of a bust of the dragon helm of dor lomin being paraded around by Durin’s children. I hope we get more of them too, can’t see enough dwarf children. The idea Durin just has replica heads lying around? Did he make them? Is it a hobby? I’m delighted. 

But I can’t talk about Durin without mentioning his and Elrond’s relationship. A while back I commented on twitter that the way the promo material discussed it, it sounded like Durin was Elrond’s jilted lover and I joked about the idea that Elrond had just... forgotten about how time passes for Durin, causing Durin to feel entirely abandoned and to move on and get married..... WELL! don’t I feel like Apollo struck me with the gift of prophecy. The emotion within the elevator scene alone... the genuine pain in Durin’s voice, the heartbreak on Elrond’s face as he hears it! I lived a life in that time, a life you missed! I was surprised the show was able to drag out real feelings from me this early on. The way Disa is trying to heal this rift between them too. I’m so fond of all of them and I now even more cannot wait for the Elrond/Durin/Disa polycule fanfic. What twists and turns of fate. 

The Southlands gave me slurs for elves so I will be forever grateful to them, although I was looking for something a little more imaginative than pointies. Would have liked something derogatory ABOUT immortality. And damn! We’re really going for racist elves! Love it honestly! I’m pretty shocked that they aren’t veering away from the textual ‘blood will out’ narratives. Elves really be inventing Faramir’s Darkmen/Middlemen/highmen paradigm as we speak. I also love mean elves, I love watching elves be snappy at each other, in general I love the expansion of what it means to be an elf outside of the heroic nobility we’ve only seen up until now. It’s a great elf portrayal! I love the mention of artificers by Arondir, elves usually expecting their bodies to heal on their own, but needing elf therapy to tend to much more fragile souls. As for Arondir and Bronwyn themselves? They are sweet and I do like the way they put their relationship into a historical context, but I want to see more of them enjoying each other’s company. Certainly I like Arondir and Bronwyn as characters on their own but I want to get to know them better.

I think the MAJOR issue I have with this show at the moment is definitely how thick it feels. All the plot threads are good and I can see how they are all going to tie into one another, I can even see how the entire arch will feed into the eventual Akallabeth, but it’s SO MUCH to get through. I’m feeling nervous about there being only 6 episodes left in season 1. I wanted more breathing room between major plot points and whilst I was surprised by the amount of character I was able to glean from such short scenes, I was still left wanting more time to explore the more complex aspects of each of the situations.

I think the southlands suffered from this the most. You are left unsure what to think about morgoth worship, whether it’s active in the village, are the elves right to hold them hostage like this or is it because of their actions that they are turning back to those dark ways? It’s definitely an uncomfortable aspect to work through and I just felt it needed more time and care than it’s gotten at the moment. And it means that, despite how much I like it, I actually still feel like the Harfoot storyline was a thread too far. I would like to know about entwives and such, but I just don’t think the show has the time. 

STILL annoyed about Durin III and Durin IV existing alongside each other. I would like to know how they’ll explain it or if they even will, but for now it’s a niggle that I can’t quite let go of. 

I’m not sure how to feel about the whole Valinor thing, because on the one hand... religious overtures are DEFINITELY the right vibe for it, the more uncomfortable the better, there’s even a slightly offkey singer amongst the choir in the soundtrack for Valinor, and an ominous scary part to the music too, but it’s still... A LOT. I suppose it also enabled them to not show Valinor again and so forth. And honestly I am intrigued by the treatment of returning to Valinor being a reward for exemplary service, it’s kind of inline with canon and creates to me a very strange and intriguing dynamic. BUT... Valinor is so hard to get right, we’ll see if it comes up again. 

I think that’s all I have to say! All in all, as I said, the show was fun and it was absolutely what I was looking for after House of the Dragons reminded me why I fell off of Game of Thrones in the first place. I would just like a little universal meta morality in my fantasy shows.

Henry Creel, Seizures, The Exorcist, and Roland Doe: Did Henry Creel Have Epilepsy?

So! I’m wondering if Henry had epilepsy. And before we dive into it, a few things to note:

Not all epilepsy is photosensitive epilepsy/triggered by flashing lights

Not all seizures are grand mal seizures (the ones where people are laying down jerking). Absence and temporal lobe seizures are far more subtle & can just look like staring into space.

Some people have a combination of grand mal seizures and other more subtle types of seizures.

So, first of all, “The Exorcist” is namedropped regarding the Creels:

And we also have Will’s S2 seizure on the field where he has SO many Direct exorcist parallels during both that scene & his cabin scene “exorcism”

Which, those Will exorcism parallels made me think “well what if Henry had a seizure during his exorcism- but what would cause it? he’s not possessed the way Will was” but then it hit me: what if its the other way around and the seizures caused the exorcism?

And we’ll come back to Will’s seizure later, but focusing on The Exorcist for now, Reagan, the girl in The Exorcist, has a seizure.

And historically, exorcisms were frequently done on kids who had epilepsy/seizures, which were mistaken for demonic possession. But rather than speaking about history in a broad sense, let’s look at a specific example- Roland Doe, the boy whose story literally inspired The Exorcist.

And hell, The Exorcist was specifically inspired by the NEWSPAPER ARTICLE about Roland's exorcism, which has me staring DIRECTLY at the Weekly Watcher article that talks about the exorcism at the Creel house.

And get this-

This is EXACTLY what happened with Henward- his parents hoped that moving to Hawkins/a change of scenery would cure him, but it did not.

And after all, what were they trying to cure him of? What symptoms was he exhibiting? They never actually tell us what was “wrong” with him. Like, sure, he’s autistic, but there’s not many “symptoms” of autism that Henry displays as a child that are disruptive enough to have him sent to doctors & moving to an entirely new town in the hopes of curing him.

What actual event/symptoms made Virginia and Victor go “okay, yeah, this boy needs to see a doctor” AND also had them move to a new town (JUST like what happened with Roland Doe as a result of his seizures) in hopes that a change of scenery would cure Henry???? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was seizures.

And his powers don’t seem to have activated until he was in Hawkins, so it likely wasn’t those.

And also, Henward says that all of the teachers and doctors claimed he was broken:

Which, epilepsy can cause issues with learning and retaining information, and if Henry was having something like absence seizures in class, too, that would also likely freak teachers out/have them see him as “broken,” because he would seem outwardly fine/just be staring into space, but wouldn’t be able to respond to them calling his name/asking him things.

And going back to the talk of being “cured,” Epilepsy is also referred to as The Sacred Disease, which would also tie into all of the religious imagery with the Creels.

And we also have the auditory and visual hallucinations that can often be part of epilepsy. Starting with the auditory hallucinations, those are often likened to sounding like radios- which would be an interesting connection to all of the radios in the show, especially the radio with the Creels.

(And this is speaking from personal experience, but, it definitely does sound like a radio like not just “a radio is the closest comparison” but instead “i genuinely believed it was the sound of a radio/sounds like what we heard with the Creel radio malfunctioning where you can't quite clearly make out any of the channels”. I was actually scared of the sound of radios/radio static as a kid because I used to hear this sort of stuff all the time as a result of having epilepsy.)

And there’s also these drawings of visual epilepsy hallucinations, which James @henrysglock pointed out to me.

And when we look at Henward’s shadow monster drawing and all of the elder brain/brain imagery in the show and the mindflayer being named, well, a mindflayer, and DND mindflayers being controlled by an elder brain & the whole "cutting the brain off from the body"/directly referring to the mindflayer as a brain.... the vibes are definitely very similar.

It's also very interesting to me that the drawings of the tunnels that Will draws before having a seizure/draws as a result of what was CAUSING his seizures are directly paralleled to Henry drawing the mindflayer (Henward's mindflayer drawing style & the medium he uses actually resembles the tunnel drawings more than it does Will's own mindflayer drawing, especially with Will's frantic scratching during the tunnel drawings and Henward's frantic scratching during the mindflayer drawings).

And like I said, Will's tunnel drawings were caused by the same thing causing his seizure- so many Henward's mindflayer drawing was caused by the seizures as well- was Henward seeing epileptic hallucinations that would later inspire him to shape the mindflayer/shadow monster the way that he did?

And again, this part is personal experience, but as a kid, part what I would hallucinate was silver spiders hanging down from door frames (and also spiders crawling all over me but those only happened at night whereas the hanging spiders were throughout the day/constant and yes, I'm 1000% sure they weren't just nightmares). Which, of course, the Duffers aren't inspired by me/don't know about what I saw, but I'm not the only person with epilepsy who's reported seeing spiders (here and here and here), which makes me wonder if it was something they came across when researching seizures/epilepsy for the show & may have influenced the decision to include all of the spider imagery with Henry.

And going back to Will’s S2 seizure, we also have Will's "now memories," which, interestingly enough, they chose to have Mike ask Will if he sees anything in his "now memories" RIGHT before Will has a seizure. Which is interesting because strong feelings of deja vu tend to precede seizures, and "now memories" are very similar to deja vu/feeling like you've seen something before but can't quite place where/aren't really sure if it's Your memories.

El also has a seizure in NINA (this is before her cardiac arrest scene) and in Surfer Boy Pizza, which are both paralleled to Will’s seizure (and yes, El was also choking, but her body did seem to be having a seizure, and it's shot with the same sort of pose and rotating camera movement as Will's seizure and El's NINA seizure).

And we also have the stroke imagery with El and the fact that strokes can cause epilepsy AND people with epilepsy are at a higher risk for strokes.

Which has me staring at Henward’s “it almost killed me” scene and how his fainting scene is paralleled to El fainting in 1979 & then El waking up without her memories/with the sort of stroke stuff that Brenner talks about.

And the focus on all of the flashing lights in the show too?? NGL, I would laugh a bit if Henry’s powers started flashing the lights during his exorcism & that triggered a seizure. It would also tie into him just. Staring sometimes/being seen as weird for that because that’s also often a part of epilepsy/absence seizures.

And even if I’m wrong about the seizure thing (which again, it’s not smthn I’m super firm on), the Duffers DEFINITELY know about Roland Doe. Roland DEFINITELY inspired Henry- that bit about what happened to Roland with his family moving towns to cure him isn't in The Exorcist but IS identical to what happened with Henry, so it's not even something that the Duffers could've just pulled from The Exorcist, because it's actually one of the parts of Roland's story that didn't end up in the Exorcist movie.

And speaking of movies, we also have One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest on the S4 board. And in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Sefelt has epilepsy and has a seizure:

And also, we have Henward’s straitjacket, which I talked about in this post.

We literally see him wearing the straitjacket on screen- but why was he wearing it? Why not just drug him if they wanted to keep him under control? And what good would a straitjacket do against a child with psionic powers anyway? It wouldn't have even worked to keep him under control! UNLESS the powers weren’t a concern (because he was unconscious/seizing) but the flailing/jerking from a grand mal seizure was making him difficult to transport/deal with.

And this is more of a minor sidenote, but something that's interesting to me is how quick Victor is to picking up Henry, almost like it's a habit. We see him pick Henry up in the dining room AND the foyer, and it's not something we ever see him do with Alice, so it's not just something that Victor Does With His Kids. But if Henry was prone to seizures and fainting, it would make sense that Victor is used to picking him up/carrying him around.

And Victor was also told that Henry was in a coma after fainting and then died- and again, speaking from personal experience here (and research), having a seizure can put you into a coma which may result in your death. So, I wonder if that's the explanation that they gave to Victor/if that was the official cause of death for Henry. Which would also make sense if, like I said, the straitjacket was put onto Henry because he was seizing, and Victor saw it happen.

I also wonder if Victor saw Henry still just sitting at the table staring & thought he was having another seizure (an absence seizure rather than a grand mal one, which would mostly just look like blank staring/exactly what Henry does in this scene) & grabbed him, especially since stress can trigger seizures, and well, watching Virginia die would've been stressful. I'm not saying that Henry was having a seizure in this scene persay, but rather that Victor may have believed he was/may have mad the connection that Henry's "fits"/moments of blank staring are connected to stress.

And the jerking motions and rolled back eyes during Vecna visions/his attacks are interesting considering how they resemble a grand mal seizure. Like, look at how Fred is posed the same way was Will was during Will's seizure:

Long story short: I won't be surprised at all if Henry/Edward had epilepsy and experienced a mixture of various types of seizures.

I adore the steelworks gang, like more than I've seen other people express online.

First of all...

My little icon Lexi.

They have been known and initially regarded for their silly voices and jolly nature but I don't often see people looking into why they do it. Like their voices make them more wild than Marion who's generally loved by some fans but they also do it in spite of themselves. They and Theo did an entire upbeat song about how much they are failures to railway engineering with lyrics like:

"We're experiments gone bad

in other words whoever designed us must be mad."

These are not the words of someone with self esteem in how funny they are! They even showed them actually depressed when saying 'We can't do anything.' for the final time in the special.

And anyone who knew how long it took for more in-your-face LGBT+ representation in 2018 She-Ra will know that if this special just came out three or four years later, we might've had proper gender-fluid Lexi representation.

As for Theo...

He is still a pure little bean and I feel the ambiguity of his design makes it all the more reason for him to feel bad about his design. I don't know what about his design warranted gigantic cogs on his sides but we don't know what went on in whatever workshop he was built at. For all we know he could've had the Henry treatment, having been dumped on the doorstep on the first desperate railway executive needed an engine, as a last ditch effort for a dying manufacturer.

As for him being on the spectrum, I can still see it in his behaviour. Lexi was truly not gender fluid but once you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person.

And some characteristics are visible in him.

His unintentional bluntness. "Are you being scrapped?"

His tics and stutters.

His shakes in excitement, if you were to count it as stimming.

And who's to say he's not limited to physical disabilities? He and Lexi, depending on how successful you can view it having designs as unique as them on British rails, are the perfect ones to have given the body language they were adamant on giving all the engines back then.

Him being so gentle and anxious is generally adorable, so yeah, not so much to say about his actual personality.

Speaking of not much to say, not much to say on Merlin either, at least nothing that people haven't said already. We all know how awesome he is.

Beresford is MY MAN!

Beresford just wants a friend guys. He said in his own song that he was always ignored by engines who just want to get a job done. No time to chat with him. Loneliness can drive him mad. It is kinda sad that his appearance in Royal Engine was not only a sign of the further appearances these characters could've had but how it was also kinda a rehash of the scene we got in his last appearance, so maybe an episode of his own where he learnt to make friends properly would've been fun.

Ah well, at least he got some friends in another life.

And what can I say about Hurricane?

Keeping it real, working with steel.

Since 1902

He is such a chill guy, that while his companion might've had a lot of hard labour in mind for Thomas, he seems so genuine in wanting to take Thomas in while still acknowledging his terrible position. He could've done with standing up to Frankie though. But whatever, that's meant to be a part of his character, and he was voiced by the chad Jim Howick no less.

It's so funny when people say he sounded like a member of the royal family when he's played kings before.

And then there's Frankie.

Oh my god I adore her so much. Her manipulation being legitimately intimidating at the best times, especially when she's actually chasing Thomas down in the dead of night, her musical style bribing him into working for her, her VA's performance capturing all of her personality through line delivery perfectly.

Everything about her class, her demeanour, most of her lines makes me so curious about her whole life.

How is she running this steelworks better than the human manager of the works if there even is one? How are the human workmen so ok with her doing this? How did the other engines before Thomas get into doing her work? How did they get out? How did Hurricane stay with her for this long, let alone not encourage some potential friends of his to work with her? Was she indirectly responsible for Hurricane surviving as long as he did to still be a tank engine after she was built? Why didn't the railways surrounding this fictional steelworks not agree with this most likely non-existent human manager not just agree to get a lot of their engines to transport steel from their works? What did Frankie do? What are you hiding from us!?

The whole mystery surrounding her and her apparently feeling put-down and apparently not evil at heart according to her character profile and her role in the book 'Delivery at the Docks' makes her potential crimes such a goldmine for story potential that I really want to delve into very soon.

And yeah, that's what I have to say on them in canon. All beautiful characters that I feel need more recognition on a regular basis.

He heard their rambling before catching sight of the source. Whoever they were must’ve been excited. Benjamin was on a date with Julia at the Tower of London, somewhere he’s wanted to visit but never had the time or money. His wife had disappeared off to another room while he stayed behind looking at the Anne Boleyn exhibit.

“No you don’t understand Mama, Anne Boleyn couldn’t cry because she knew what it meant. Plenty of sources cite so, that’s why she’s such an important figure and the best known Queen Consort of Henry VIII”

Benjamin smiled to himself at the thought of someone here with their family. Rambling on about such a niche topic with such passion. When he finally caught sight of the person talking he was stunned. They were a sight to behold, dressed in a comfortable sweater while they clutched tightly onto a leather notebook.

“I know darling, you tell me a lot”

The persons accent stuck out the most to Benjamin. He decided they must’ve been from the Oceanic region with the close reminiscence of the voices he was surrounded with daily. When he caught sight of the person he couldn’t take his eyes off of them, watching as they pointed to parts of the exhibit and explained to an older woman just what Anne Boleyn meant to England.

“You know before she was crowned Queen, Henry had actually slept with her sister. The union resulted in two alleged bastard children that Henry never acknowledged. A man’s reputation is far more important than the truth, even now. The world hasn’t changed for us at all. It’s why their stories are so important”

Benjamin watched as they were whacked by their mother as they cursed. He couldn’t help but let out a light chuckle. The two of them went on and he couldn’t help but follow. It wasn’t like Julia missed him, she would’ve messaged him or called.

Occasionally the younger of the two would chime in with an odd fact about the Tower of London. More often than not they were oddly morbid, Benjamin had come to the conclusion that they were a fan of the more unloved things in life. The next exhibit that was stopped at happened to be where Julia was. Benjamin returned to his wife, greeting her. Trying to avoid the question of why she left him alone. Unbeknownst to Benjamin, someone across the room was staring at him. His short hair and the jacket that hung a little loose around his frame, the dark rimmed glasses fixed upon his nose.

“Seems like someone’s caught your eye dear, why don’t you go talk to him?”

Benjamin heard this and turned around to lock eyes with the same person he was listening to earlier. His face reddened slightly as their mothers comment set in. Turning back to Julia he felt the glare his wife had.

“Will you stop looking at me like that Julia?”

A harsh slap came down on Benjamin’s arms, unlike the gentle affection their mother had shown them. He let out a hiss of pain but he knew he couldn’t retaliate. Not in public and not ever. Long before Julia Benjamin had made himself he’d never hurt anyone. Although that plan seemingly failed to those who knew him by his old name.

“I’m not looking like anything. You want something younger go get it. You’ve simply realised I’m too old haven’t you Benjamin?”

Before Benjamin could even open his mouth to respond Julia had walked off. Heavy feet meeting the floor with echoes. A heavy sigh exited his mouth as he occupied himself with reading the small frame about Katheryn Howard and her beheading.

“Did you know that Katheryn Howard was beheaded with an ax while Anne Boleyn was beheaded with a sword? Making Anne the only Tudor figure who was ever decapitated by sword”

The voice, the same Australian voice who he’d heard rambling moments earlier appeared by his side. Benjamin looked at them, staring into their eyes.

“Katheryns story is said to be one of the most tragic of Henry’s wives and while I agree, they’re all tragic in their own way. What makes her story such a tragedy is she went through so much pain and her story is barely ever told, times don’t change much. It’s what draws me to the six of them”

A smile creeped across the persons face as they spoke. The content was dark but their attitude shocked Benjamin. They spoke with such cadence on the subject it made Benjamin wonder if they were a history major.

“My names Y/N by the way. I’m sorry if I seem awkward, I’m not great at social cues. Autism makes me that way so most of my conversation is down through my talk of history”

A small creeped across Y/N’s face as they spoke. Benjamin returned the favour as a toothy grin crossed his face. It was a genuine smile, not the ones he’d been faking with Julia for the past few months.

“I’m Benjamin, nice to meet you. Take it you’re a bit of a history fan?”

A small chuckle escape Y/N’s lips and all the whole Benjamin couldn’t help but notice their mother smiling proudly at the two. As Benjamin returned his focus to them, he listened with intent as they explain the detailed history of what led up to the beheading of Katheryn Howard.

They struck Benjamin with comfort while they spoke and led him throughout the Tower of London. As if they’d been a million times although it was just their first. He had learned that they weren’t a history major but rather it was their special interest, that this had been a dream of theirs since childhood and they were here with their mother. The feeling Benjamin got with Y/N was familiar to what he felt when he first met Julia, except it was much more passionate and raw. It wasn’t that you were close in age, it’s that you were nice and genuine. He’d just have to get to know you this time before proposing marriage, as well as divorce Julia.

Ok last post about this comic (for now)

Obligatory don’t harass the artist, I have nothing against him or this comic. I’m just very autistic about William Aftons character, his downfall, need to rant, and this is basically my fnaf side blog so I’m posting it here lol

This page on its own is actually pretty good character wise like William would definitely say that, he’s self centered enough to think that his victims should just “let it go” and “leave him alone already” because he’s sick of having to suffer, and Cassidy would make deals with him just to change her mind last minute and keep him trapped there bc she fucking hates him (and she canonically does the last part in ucn!) All around some solid lore accurate characterization!

The problem is, however, this is being used to vilify Cassidy. We’re supposed to think she’s being unfair to poor William who has been suffering for soo long, never mind that he killed her when she was what 10 years old? No HE’S the victim here, not the children he killed! If it’s not supposed to be read that way it was NOT made clear enough bc that’s how it seems to be being portrayed to me

Her, completely reasonable, anger at Henry and CC for protecting William later is vilified too, at least that’s how it seems to me. Like William KILLED HER and they’re DEFENDING HIM I’d get their asses too! They fucking deserve it!

Anyway yeah I’m not a fan of this comic. All the ableism and infantilization with CC (the creator of the comic called him an infant who doesn’t know better he’s 10 fucking years old come on 😭😭😭) Cassidy villainization, and William apologism is unbearable.

Also Cassidy’s skin color being so grey and washed out is just… no. None of her other colors are washed out and grey, none of the other ghosts are washed out and grey, I shouldn’t have to explain why this is bad.
