#Hennessy the worm

i made a post a while back about bonded shelter cats cabeswater-and-greywaren gansey-and-ronan entering the human world together again with each successive generation and being extremely annoying about it and i'd like to add something vital to this concept: if humans reincarnate, and if dreamers retain their powers in each life, then ronan is for SURE hunting hennessy down every time. even when it's the most inconvenient thing in the fucking world. he's not even being a nightmare creature about it he's just annoying the PISS out of her. creeping through her dreams poking her like hey hey hey hey hey pay tention to me. hey hi heyyy hiiii it's me ya eldritch terror from the deep omg whats up. hi. and every single fucking time she's like "if you don't shut the fuck up i am GOING to make you into a worm" and he's like "okay but my buddy has to come be a worm too" and she's like "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. THERE ARE TWO OF YOU????"

The Gangsey as obscure scents
Gansey: the musty one that makes your nose crinkle when you flip through your grandparents’ old photo albums
Adam: worms on tarmac you find at recess in the fourth grade
Ronan: when you laugh too hard while you’re drinking and root beer comes out of your nose- that smell
Noah: vanilla cupcake scented lip balm
Blue: orange peels that leave sticky marks on counter tops
Henry: when someone leans in to tell you a secret and you can smell artificial bubble gum
✨Bonus✨
Declan: dryer sheets and coffee beans (not mixed together)
Hennessy: the metallic one that comes right at the beginning of a nose bleed
Jordan: cigarette smoke and French fries

so i’ve had a few hours to process mi and i know that mstief has said it’s very much about chronic illness and while i very much agree, it’s MY coping series and i get to project onto it so i’d like to throw my hat in the ring for it’s about mental illness as well, especially the more “””destructive””” ones, and specifically how people cope with it. tw for mental illness, s/uicide, and all the stuff that comes with it.
because ronan and hennessy are undeniably destructive, either because they can’t help it (murder crabs, the lace) or because they want to be (ecoterrorism, hennessy’s orb). this applies both to their immediate surroundings AND to themselves, their relationships. and while in these cases the cause seems to be the dreaming, it would be easy to draw a parallel to mania or psychosis, maybe dissociation (though dissociation among trc/tdt characters i.e. jordan, matthew, adam is a discussion for a different day). i’m showing my hand a little but i also think ronan’s paranoia in this book is pretty significant— see his whole “everyone was in on it” spiel when it was, at its core, his loved ones trying to protect him from self-destruction. i also think mental illness here is deeply tied to creation/dreaming (as it is for many mentally ill people). ronan creates and sometimes creates destruction but when he doesn’t it destroys him (nightwash) and hennessy has a mental block, arguably due to trauma that keeps her from creating at all (the lace) but i digress.
the way i see it, ronan and hennessy are two very mentally ill people coping in very different ways. or rather, they are at different stages in their coping process. hennessy (although she very much has an individual struggle i want to emphasize that) is where ronan used to be. she’s s/uicidal— i think that’s inarguable. the lace aside, she even asks for liliana and carliana to kill her. but i think the lace speaks for itself. it hates her and it destroys, but it’s really hennessy hating herself, wanting to destroy herself. thats why she keeps dreaming doubles (though i would also argue that the doubles are an attempt to imagine a hennessy without mental illness, without trauma). that’s as much as text, and it’s nearly a direct parallel to how ronan used to view himself. he used to dream doubles as well— versions of himself to give to his self hatred and s/uicidal tendencies. hennessy is learning, she’s stopped dreaming doubles, but on some level she still hates herself enough to want to die. it invades her dreamspace and renders her unable to create. it makes sense to me that she was only able to dream the orb after encountering carmen and liliana, two supportive (and lesbian, diversity win!) women who explicitly tell hennessy that her life has value. but her solution to turn off the ley line is also interesting to me. the lace, her tendency for self-harm that tends to manifest when she creates, is so overwhelming that the only way out of it that she sees is to remove her ability to create altogether, and i wonder how this will affect her. i’m eager to see how her character develops in the third book and i hope that will come in the form of her treasuring her own life and reclaiming her ability to create from her trauma and mental illness as well as rebuilding relationships with people (jordan!) who she’s pushed away out of fear or self martyrdom.
and then there’s ronan. we’ve never seen ronan at his most s/uicidal— that was pre-trc, when he went to the hospital. idc if they were his dreams, that was a s/uicide attempt and i will not be dissuaded on this. still, a lot of trc was ronan coming to terms with himself as a dreamer, a gay man, a high school dropout, a mentally ill person, and learning that his life DOES have value! and that’s a lesson i think he’s learned by tdt, and certainly by mi. he wants to live, and he wants to create! but he feels stifled by a world that doesn’t want to accommodate that. in this world there’s no space for his murder crabs or his hay barn full of wheels— for his mania and destruction. and he feels and fears that his loved ones only want him as a diluted version of himself, which is devastating when you’ve only just learned to accept all of yourself. and it’s hard because you don’t want to hurt your loved ones! or yourself! but you also don’t want to be treated like glass, or like you’re defective, or like you have to hide the wild and sometimes ugly parts of yourself to be palatable enough for society to accept you. so he creates bryde. someone like him, but who has it all together and is in control, who can help him create a world that accommodates him, doesn’t stifle him, but also indulges ronan in his most self-isolating, paranoid compulsions. bryde is both an indulgence and a self-protective measure. i think this is why the lace is afraid of bryde because on some level, bryde IS the lace, just in a different form, evolved, a different way of coping that involves living. but it’s also why adam and all of the people who love ronan are afraid of the lace— they can see that bryde is just as destructive, just in a different way.
this is not to say that either hennessy or ronan are wrong, that one is coping “better” than the other, that they’re coping badly, or that bryde and lace are their “evil mental illness.” it’s way way more complex than that, and that’s why i find myself increasingly sympathetic to hennessy even as she becomes more destructive in the same way that i can’t find myself completely disagreeing with bryde. these parts of hennessy and ronan can be inwardly and outwardly harmful but they can also be beautiful and necessary— hence the magic that is dreaming. (this is also not to say that the people they dream aren’t autonomous, but that’s a whole other can of worms) the mental illness can’t be shunned away or eliminated entirely. it has to be radically accepted as a part of the whole that is ronan and hennessy. and that’s a lifelong process that i think every mentally ill person grapples with, and i’m very much looking forward to seeing how hennessy and ronan evolve with respect to these concepts in the third book

ahn iwa headcanons please :debbyryan: im literally so big brained for coming up with this😩
i mean if you insist :debbyryan: the fun i had writing this is criminal hjdfhjsdhfjdfs
disclaimer: i don’t write for haikyuu, but i have anh iwa on the brain 25/8 and i love connecting w my culture so 🤩 @peach-pops cOLLECT HIM i am begging. man hasn’t paid rent for MONTHS
warnings: mentions of alcohol, mild timeskip spoilers
iwa is 21 in these!!
Tumblr media
as a relative:
- listen,,, LISTEN
- anh iwa is The Favorite Relative™
- brother, cousin, in-law, you name it, everyone loves him
- i’m not saying he’s the one everyone compares you to but that’s exactly what i’m saying
- you get excited when you see him walk through the door anyway bc again, it’s Anh Iwa
- he’s the one who would go out to play w the little kids when they try to worm their way into pestering the older cousins at The Adult Table™.
- somehow, some-fucking-how, he also manages to start talking to the awkward teen cousins sitting on the couch playing on their phone or ipad
- okay but at the same time he also sneaks up behind any of the awkward cousins on their phone to go “what are you doing?” RIGHT NEXT TO THEIR MF EAR just to see them have a heart attack asshole
- okay despite this he’s also chaotically protective. says w a completely straight face: “if anyone gives you a problem lmk. i can crack some skulls so you know who to call”
- meanwhile you’re sitting there halfway through your bánh xèo like 👁👄👁
- all the aunties and uncles love him but he’s also slightly testy with them if you squint
- mostly bc, without fail, the conversation always goes to “oh you’re going to UCI? they have a medical school, are you going to become a doctor?” and then he has to laugh off their pressuring once he says he’s going to become an athletic trainer
- okay but his vietnamese? *chef’s kiss* immaculate. and he makes it sound good.
- like i hate how vietnamese sounds, but when i tell you i could listen to iwa speaking viet all day
- def speaks southern dialect. yes this is me projecting bc i’m south viet.
- he hogs the bánh bột lọc at dinner and you can’t convince me otherwise. will deadass eat half the party tray on his own if no one checks him
- also!! he helps the little kids light the tết firecrackers and makes sure they stay safe 🥺
- before then going on to scare the older kids by holding the firecrackers and going “let’s light the yard on fire 🤠”
- family gatherings are always guaranteed to be a good time if iwa’s there
Tumblr media
as an s/o in a viet family:
- can i just say that iwa would try really hard to learn at least some vietnamese before he even considers meeting the family.
- and he does really well too! yeah the tones mess him up all the time but he’s doing his best ❤️
- god,,, his first interactions with the family were sO awkward
- like he’d be sitting out the counter next to one of the younger cousins and go
- "what grade are you in? oh __ grade? thats cool,,,, wow your getting old huh?" LIKE SIR YOU ARE TALKING TO A 6TH GRADER 😭
- and when cô sáu comes up to him rattling off twenty different topics in vietglish he bluescreens
- poor boy has to filter two languages through japanese
- so he’s just standing there the entire time like “d-dạ, oh, really? ah, dạ. thank you 😀” until you have to save him jaksjdfsd
- it takes a couple visits and everyone learning that yes, he’s endgame. yes, you two are committed, for him to really get comfy in the family
- always. getting. fed. his plate is never empty bc dì phuong keeps loading his plate with more food. and he can’t say no bc the aunties are staring at him expectantly and he can’t just refuse the food they cooked
- he can just work it off during the week 💔
- he earned his seal of approval from the family the moment he outdrank chú viet let’s be real here
- he can’t look at hennessy or vsop the same after that but still
- it comes to a point where you go looking for him during the annual tết party and he’s just. sitting there. with someone’s toddler sitting on his leg.
- “why do you have a baby” “idk someone just gave them to me to hold” “,,, who—” “...chị hoang, i think? could’ve been her husband idk”
- he’s saying this like the kid’s not waving around the soggy egg roll they’ve been teething all night
- i still stand by the fact that all the little cousins clamber all over him the moment you two arrive. just a bunch of kids clinging to his legs like “anh iwa!! you’re here!! :D”
- the relatives are alwaysssss asking if he’s coming to the family gathering
- like deadass at one point you’re looking at your parents like “i thought i’m your child 🤨”
- they say he’ll be their son-in-law soon anyway ❤️

More DND with Jay
(Because Jay has a problem)
After the “Death” of Ticket Master, his sword popped out a new god; Task Master. He’s basically a really whiny Mr. Poopybutthole and is super jazzed to be promoted into this position. Apparently, it’s the position he wanted.
Because of the situation we were in, he marked us all with a bracelet so he could keep track of all of us. With the exception of Koejin, who was able to move in time to keep the bracelet off her. When Koejin refused to put it on, Hennessy was able to convince him that Koejin would be a loyal follower. Task Master kinda shrugged it off and just stated he would be able to see through her eyes when she lied anyway.
Task Master then opened up two portals back to the mortal world; one from where we left off and the second to where we were heading. Where we were heading was being demolished by a giant worm (General Purple) and Mrs. Red.
But there was still unfinished business in the tunnels. Wreybar’s entire family was down there and so was Art’s sister. We ended up splitting the party.
Hennessy, who went into the tunnels with us, wasn’t happy when he found out (he headed through first)
Hennessy: (angry sputtering)
Art: Hennessy, it’s okay. Just... stay calm. We’ll see them when we get out of here.
Art’s hand: (Forms a mouth and speaks in Ticket Master’s voice) Yes, Hennessy, stay calm.
Art: (Stares at his hand) The fuck?! How?! What?!?!
Ticket Master: Well, I needed a way to communicate with you. So, I accessed your hand as it... what’s that?
Art: What’s what?
Ticket Master: That! On your wrist! Take it off!
Art: (Tries to take off the bracelet only to have it stay right where it was) yeah, no can do, bud.
Ticket Master: No, you have to remove it! Hennessy! Do something! Use magic! Get rid of it!
Hennessy: uhhh...(studies the bracelet for a moment) um...(pulls out a cloth and ties it around Art’s hand, gagging Ticket Master)
Ticket Master: Mmmphh!
Art: (fake innocent look at the hand) Is that better?
Hennessy: I just... don’t have the energy to deal with him right now....
-
(Later, further in the dungeon)
DM: So you guys come to a door that’s slightly ajar.
Me: Okay, I peak my head in all stealthy-like. (Pretty high Stealth roll)
DM: Alright, Art. So you look in and see a large, dim room with a chest in the center. Sitting on top is a goblin who hasn’t noticed you yet. On the far side is a glass room with another opening only big enough for Wreybar.
Me: Is the room bright enough for Hennessy to see?
DM: Yeah, no need for darkvision.
Art: (Relays this info to the rest of the group.)
Everyone: (Walks in and alerts the goblin to their presence.)
Goblin: (Starts shouting at them. Only Hennessy understands him)
Hennessy starts talking to the goblin and finds out his name is Robert Lin. He’s sitting on the chest because something in it tried to bite his hand off. Hector was the reason for him being stuck there. (Hector’s been trying to lead us into situations that would kill us for a while now.)
Art: Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if there was a little mimic inside the chest?
Alabaster: Seems rather redundant.
Art: Just saying it be funny.
Wreybar goes into the room and finds a book of monsters. Hennessy looks inside it and finds some pages are worn, along side a bookmark that says “this is what is in the chest.” We come down to three different creatures. Blue slime, tiny blue dragons, and water.
Chest: (speaking draconic)
Everyone: Yep, dragons. Definitely dragons...
Hector: We could just leave him here and keep going. You know, there’s a really cool statue in the other room with glowing red eyes. We should check it out. Any takers?
Everyone: (Silently glaring at him)
Hector: Guess not.
Hennessy: Maybe you should tell us about why you left our friend here on a chest and we might consider listening to you.
Hector: I don’t need to tell you anything. You don’t have that skeleton with you anymore. (Note: Skelly went with the other team.)
Art, fed up and pissed off now: Alright, look. You have managed to piss off everyone here in one way or another. Now, what you’re going to do is shut your mouth until we speak to you and answer all of our questions, or I’m going to make you wish it was Skelly here!
Hector: (Begins to do a mocking impression of Art)
Art: (Rolls extremely high on intimidation)
DM:  Art, as you’re shouting at Hector, the air around you begins to heat up and crackle. You begin to glow a little and, as Hector looks up at you, he is struck by fear. The black eyed glare, the horns, the heat, it’s all a perfect terrifying picture. He’s so scared, in fact, that he passes out from fear.
Art:....shit. (smacks him a few times in attempt to wake him up. he doesn’t move.) uhhh, whoops.... hm...
(Art then proceeds to move Hector to safe places and make sure he doesn’t die. After that, he agrees to the idea of their new goblin buddy dragging him around with a rope. No one else cares about whether Hector lives or dies. Art’s motives and mind confuse even me sometimes...)
-
(Next room has an old mining type rail with a curtain leading into a long, dark, void-like hallway. The void is described to be something very Ticket Master-y.)
Art: (takes the wrapping off his hand.)
Ticket Master: Bleh! Ugh! Hennessy! What is that, your dirty laundry?! Ugh... Hello...
Art: Hey, uh, just a quick question. Do you know anything about this room?
Ticket Master:..... I’ll need to have a better look. Put your hand out.
Art: (does that)
Ticket Master: ....Okay, now bring me back.
Art: (does that too.)
Ticket Master: Art, do you see any eyes here?! I have no idea what fucking room you’re talking about!
(DM: Ticket Master isn’t at all his cool self. You can hear the frustration in his tone which is completely new to you.
Me: Yeah. Honestly it’s kinda nice.)
Art, sighing: Okay. It’s a room with a mining rail. Ring any bells? Figured you’d know considering you were down here before us.
Ticket Master: Oh you figured as much? Well, I still have no idea....
Art: Ah, okay. It was worth a shot. So on goes the gag again.
Ticket Master: No, wait! (Art reapplies the cloth) Mrrrph!
(We go down the rails and see that it’s a presentation talking about the generals, all of it hosted by Mrs. Red. It fast forwards at certain points, but then stops towards the end to play about Purple.)
Red: And then we have my good friend, Purple. He can turn into literally anything and use its abilities to his full advantage. He’s unstoppable. So, my suggestion to you? Jump into the void. There, you can be brought back to your lives with no memories of this. Simple, easy, quick.
Hennessy: Clearly, this is some pre-recorded message.
Art: Has to be.
Red: Oh, Hennessy, is it so clear? And it ‘has to be,’ Art?
Alabaster: How is this possible? We saw you on the back of the giant worm in Althori!
Hennessy: After being stabbed by Eltbalm.
DM: Hennessy, (After rolling Arcana) you remember reading about this type of magic. It’s a projection of a person’s mind. So, that really is Red in front of you.
Red: Yes, thank you for that. Speaking of which, could you tell me how that’s possible?
Art: We could.
Red:.... (impatiently waiting for an explanation Art won’t deliver. ((Art is soooo dead when she gets her hands on him.)))
Alabaster: ....It was a gift.... for you...
Hennessy: Either way, we must move on, for now. Time to continue on our quest to stop you. (climbs out of the car.)
Art: See you soon, Red. (follows after Hennessy and Alabaster)
Red: One more thing. Tell that tentacle monstrosity you call Ticket Master that I’m coming for him. And I’ll take great pleasure in killing him.
Art: Yeah... good luck with that one...
(Everyone heads out of the room.)
-
(We all head into a new room with a new puzzle having to do with statues of Mrs. Red. But then, a large projection plays on the wall and shows Koejin looking at us in confusion. On her end, it’s a random floating rock. A homebrew move Alabaster has is Pelor Message. It works like Message but with no distance limit. However, he can only message poeple who are either followers of Pelor or supporters of the belief. Koejin’s a supporter.)
Alabaster: Hello, Koejin! We seem to be able to see you!
Koejin: Wait. Are you guys in the floating rock?! (pokes it)
Art: Hey, do me a favor and yell at her for poking strange magical objects. (for context: Koejin has stopped Art from poking at magical items about three times already. She’s literally kept him alive in most cases.)
Alabaster: Art would like to chasitise you for touching unknown magical artifacts.
Koejin: Psh, it’s fiiiiiine. But, Alabaster! Look who we ran into! (Koejin pulls an elf over into view and points at him. It’s Alabaster’s brother.)
Alabaster: (overjoyed rambling)
Art, leaning over to Hennessy: Not to be racist but.... doesn’t that guy look an awful lot like Alabaster? (Koejin’s player: That’s what I said!!)
Ticket Master: Mrph frph!
Art: (taking off the cloth again) Yeah, what’s up?
Ticket Master: Ugh, that thing’s disgusting!
Art:...Did you just want to be able to speak?
Ticket Master: Is that such a crime?
Alabaster:... Oh, yes... A new development; Ticket Master is also still around. Art’s hand has formed a mouth.
Koejin: Ugh.... really?
(It was around here that our side ran out of time and we transitioned into what was going on with the giant worm destroying the town. Also had to end early because my connection kept fucking up....)

BODY BUILD: jordan has what's considered the ideal weight for his height. he has a fast metabolism so albeit not upkeeping any kind of strict diet or following a specific eating plan, it's hard for him to put on much weight. up until a few years ago — five or six — and following how he stopped regularly exercising / playing basketball, he had a, somewhat, thin figure but ever since he started working out again, he has managed to get some lean muscle. overall, he has a toned body with defined abs and muscular arms. HAIR COLOR & STYLE: when the topic in question regards personal style, it's hard to describe jordan's seeing as it is ever-changing. he has dreads and, most of the time, that's the extent he'll go to with his hairstyle. every so often, he'll get tired of having his hair down and he'll go for pigtails — which is one of his favorites hair styles — or a ponytail. when he wants his hair completely out of his way, he'll section his hair and part it in two cornrows and on the rare, he wears half of his hair up and the other half down. DOMINANT HAND: right. NOTABLE PHYSICAL TRAITS: the most notable physical trait is, without a doubt, the unusual birthmark on his cheek. besides it, and despite not doing it nearly as often ( unless he's around people he loves ), his smile / laugh are another thing that distinguishes him. there's also his towering frame, his ever-changing hair styles and his chiselled features on top of it. SCARS AND MARKS: asides from your every day, average scars here and there, jordan has a two larger and notable ones : the first on the underside of his right arm courtesy of breaking his arm when he was a kid and the second on his left knee, the result of a surgery he had to be submitted to due to an injury he made when he used to play basketball. he has a distinguishing birthmark on his cheek but, other than that, and sans a few moles here and there, jordan has no other relevant marks. Sweet Savannah Sunshine
Pairing: James Flint x Thomas Hamilton
Word Count: 1593
Warnings: angst, mentions of past homophobia, more angst, one (1) single swear word
Flint couldn’t remember ever being this nervous. Not upon reaching Skeleton Island nor upon tying himself to the helm during a tempest. On both occasions, the worst outcome had been death, but which was the worst outcome here? That he would end up in Savannah to work and die alone as James Flint? Or that Thomas would be waiting for him and he would have to remember how to be James McGraw?
Thomas. Flint would have to get used to saying it aloud again. He’d treated the name as a sacrament for so long it felt heavy on his tongue. It struck him, then, that there was only one person left alive, aside from Flint himself, who knew Thomas’s name and story. Even that felt like too much, as if the more his name was spoken the more pieces of Thomas would disappear from Flint’s memory.
Would he even recognize him anymore? It had been a decade since he’d last seen Thomas. Perhaps he’d finally grown his hair out after all his griping about wigs. James could imagine it, soft as it had been, tumbling over Thomas’s shoulders in golden waves. His fingers twitched as he imagined running his hands through it, imagined it brushing his own shoulders as Thomas leaned to kiss him.
Would he taste the same? Would he feel the same? Or would his body be marked by ropes of muscle that came from years of labor? Would his skin be pale as it was in the London fog, or would it be tanned from the Georgia sun? Would he recognize Thomas? Would Thomas recognize him?
A bolt of panic shot through Flint’s spine. Ten years he’d spent memorizing Thomas’s face, sketching it on any available surface. He’d committed himself to that face, but had Thomas done the same? Or had his miserable shit of a father told him that James had left without looking back? Another jolt of panic. James’ heart roared louder than the ocean around him. What if Thomas hated him for leaving? What if he rejected him now, after all he’d done to get where he was? Because of it?
James could hardly breathe as he shut himself in the captain’s cabin, locking the door and sliding down it as he focused on the bite of the wood in his back instead of his own gasping lungs. Suddenly, he was a boy again, clinging to his mother’s skirts as a British officer explained that there was an accident at sea and his father would not be returning. It was the first chapter in a story defined by tragedy.
How he could feel so keenly the loss of something he did not yet have, James didn’t know. And yet the mere thought of Thomas dismissing him made his blood turn to ice. He buried the thought in the same corner of his mind that James kept the rest of his darkness, focusing instead on the wood beneath his palms and the gentle sway of the ship on the water. It reminded him that he was still James Flint, and James Flint didn’t have time to lose himself in emotion. The only context in which James Flint knew fear was the look in his enemies’ eyes before he slew them.
Flint dragged himself off the floor, resigning himself to solemn silence for the remainder of the journey. Silver would interpret his silence as acceptance rather than what it actually was: a feeble attempt by a desperate man to hang onto the last shreds of his composure.
The nervousness Flint had felt on the ship paled in comparison to the fear that claimed him the second his boots hit sand at port. He had half a mind to turn tail and run back onto the ship, to demand Silver take him back to the Maroon camp with the tone of voice he knew even Silver couldn’t deny. Yet, the other half of his mind urged him forward. Urged him onward. Even now, on the heels of peace, Flint couldn’t stop tearing himself apart at the seams. Perhaps Miranda had been right all those years ago. Maybe he did need someone to fight, be it Rogers or Silver or himself.
A hand guided him forward. Gunn’s hand. James had hardly taken the time to get to know him, assuming that one or the other of them would have died at the camp or the ensuing battle or any of the other myriad of ways Woodes Rogers would have seen them all killed. He thought idly about getting to know him now, asking Gunn his favorite color or if his mother read to him as a child, if only to quiet his own mind, but James’ tongue was too leaden to croak out the words. He hardly even felt the bite of irons around his wrist, too distracted he was by the ghost of irons around his ankles, weighing down every step that brought him closer to the end of his own story.
James hadn’t even noticed Gunn handing him off - had only noticed a difference when the sun was on his face again and a rougher hand grabbed his arm to push him forward. The man smelled of sweat and tobacco - two familiar scents. But he also smelled of grass and flowers, a scent both foreign and comforting. It was so different than the sea.
James took another deep breath as he was walked towards a field. The smell of freshly tilled earth greeted him, bringing his mind around to thoughts of Odysseus and his shovel. He wondered how much farther inland he would have to walk to forget about the sea.
As it turned out, James had only to walk another foot before everything else fell away from him - his name, his past, his story - because there before him stood a form more familiar to him than his own. The same cropped blond hair he could feel between his fingers, the lithe neck that had surrendered under his lips and which now stretched down into an expanse of bare skin pulled taut over ropes of muscles that contracted and relaxed as Thomas worked the earth the same way he would have worked James’ body - worshipping it and reveling in it at once.
He stopped, then, as if he could feel James’ eyes on him. As he turned, every second of the last ten years fell away. He was an officer again, standing in the dining room having just thrown Alfred Hamilton out of his own house and Thomas - Christ, Thomas looked as eager now as he had in that moment, so full of hope and longing as he took the first step forward and showed James for the first time what love was meant to feel like.
He basked in that gaze now, drinking Thomas in without reservation. He looked every bit as regal as he had in London, only with an added sheen of sweat covering his skin. He looked like cut marble, as if James was looking upon David himself, though even the towering masterpiece seemed little more than a child’s sand sculpture in comparison to the soft planes of Thomas’s body.
James was well aware what he must look like: a man starved, hungry for the touch of Thomas’s skin against his. He could feel the tenuous grip on his own composure slipping as every step brought him closer until a familiar voice crept into his mind and froze him in place.
Hennessy’s voice, as clear as the day it had been when it forced James out of the Navy, out of his home, his life. James could hear Hennessy’s voice now as the words tightened around his neck like a noose. It is too profane. It is too loathsome. Silver had assured James that the plantation owners were aware of the true circumstances in which Thomas had come here, that they didn’t much care who he bedded, but James was unwilling to take that chance again, not when Thomas was so close - so close that the thought of losing him again might actually kill James on the spot.
Thomas still had not moved, studying James from afar. There was a look in his eye that James couldn’t place from this distance. He watched Thomas touch the skin where his wedding band had been. It was a nervous tick. Something he’d done only when he was worried, and James felt the realization like a gunshot: Thomas was just as scared as he was.
No sooner had the realization hit him than James was walking, running, flying forward. He was Icarus and Thomas was the sun. If the wax melted and he plummeted to the ground, there was nowhere James would rather land than Thomas’s arms, and land there he did as their chests crashed together like waves on the hull of the Walrus. Thomas’s arms pulled him close as James dragged his calloused hands against the bare skin of Thomas’s back.
And then Thomas’s lips were against his and James could think of nothing else but the slide of their bodies against each other. Nothing else held meaning but the taste of Thomas and the glow of his smile as he stared at James with enough love to chase away the chill of the sea that had wormed its way in James’ very bones. Heaven and hell were nothing more than words to James as he let go of the oars tying him to the sea and picked up the shovel to bury Flint for good.
A/N: Uuuuuuh sorry I’ve been MIA on this blog for like...months and then come back with a Black Sails fic of all things but I binged the entire show and it has consumed my life but I do promise to get back to regularly scheduled fics eventually lmao.

For the week of 5 May 2019
Quick Bits:
Age of Conan: Bêlit #3 throws a few road bumps in the way of Bêlit’s plans as the Kushites renege of their deal and her drunken “Captain” continues being a jerk. I’m really liking this exploration of Bêlit’s early days from Tini Howard, Kate Niemczyk, Scott Hanna, Jason Keith, and Travis Lanham.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Archie #704 throws some roadblocks in the way of Archie and Sabrina’s relationship through the form of a “Bachelor”-like charity programme set up by Cheryl. I love the even more stylized pastel colour palette from Matt Herms.
| Published by Archie Comics
Tumblr media
Batman & The Outsiders #1 is an entertaining debut from Bryan Hill, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, Clayton Cowles. I’ve not read the arc in Detective Comics that feeds into this, but this first issue provides enough information for new readers now to be lost and gives good incentive to check out what’s come before. Great art from Soy and Gandini, with an interesting look inside a team and a compelling start to a mystery about the last survivor from a metahuman generating factory.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Bettie Page #4 concludes the QE2 aliens caper. Love the art from Julius Ohta, Ellie Wright, and Sheelagh D.
| Published by Dynamite
Tumblr media
Bronze Age Boogie #2 continues the strangest Doom Patrol story as the Martian invasion angle has taken hold in the future and a motley crew of heroes bands together to try to stop them. Stuart Moore, Alberto Ponticelli, Giulia Brusco, and Rob Steen are playing with some interesting cross-media influences to tell a highly entertaining tale. It’s rounded out with the usual goodies in the form of prose, letters, and what’s probably my favourite of the back-up strips so far, Major Ursa, from Tyrone Finch, Mauricet, Lee Loughridge, and Rob Steen.
| Published by Ahoy
Tumblr media
Conan the Barbarian #6 sees Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham tell a story of Conan’s frustrations as a mercenary in the skirmishes between Turan and Stygia. People constantly underestimating Conan is always a fun story.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Deadly Class #38 sees Marcus and Maria return to King’s Dominion. It’s kind of messed up seeing the new status quo, but at the same time the tension that Rick Remender, Wes Craig, Jordan Boyd, and Rus Wooton build here between to old Legacy kids and Marcus & Maria feels like it’s going to explode, suggesting something even worse for the characters is coming soon. It’s very captivating.

Detective Comics #1003 reveals the identity of the Arkham Knight. It’s not really anyone you could have possibly guessed, but an interesting addition to Batman’s rogues gallery. Also the cult surrounding the Arkham Knight is certifiably insane. Gorgeous artwork again from Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessy, and Nathan Fairbairn.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
The Empty Man #7 goes full Clive Barker as we get an explanation for what the Empty Man really is and how he continues to manifest himself upon reality. I know I keep saying it, but the body horror brought about in the art from Jesús Hervás and Niko Guardia just can’t be stressed enough. Every issue they seem to outdo themselves with creepy and intriguing designs.

Eve Stranger #1 looks to be another winner for Black Crown. This first issue sets up the titular character as a secret agent who seems to need to reboot her memory every week. Why, exactly, is left unknown, but that’s part of the fun. David Barnett, Philip Bond, Eva de la Cruz, and Jane Heir do a wonderful job here with the action and intrigue. Also it’s great to see Bond doing more espionage tinged action, his art always looks so great telling these kinds of stories.
| Published by IDW / Black Crown

Excellence #1 is a thoroughly excellent debut from Brandon Thomas, Khary Randolph, Emilio Lopez, and Deron Bennett. The world and character building in this first issue is impeccable and the art from Randolph and Lopez will just blow you away. Incredible development of a magic-based society and the class structure therein.

Tumblr media
The Flash #70 begins “Year One” promising new insight and occurrences during Barry’s origin story. Given that the last time this happened his mother was murdered, changing the timeline and resulting down the line in Barry trying to fix it with Flashpoint, anything’s possible. The real draw, though, is the stunning artwork from Howard Porter and Hi-Fi. Porter is really giving this his all and it shines through wonderfully.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Hawkman #12 brings Bryan Hitch’s tenure on the series to an end with the conclusion to “Cataclysm”. This is an excellent, action-packed final confrontation between the legion of Hawkmen and the Deathbringers, setting up a whole Hawkman for possibly the first time and hints as to worse things waiting on the horizon.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Infinite Dark #6 amplifies the terror and chaos as the dead-ish things exposed to the void start spreading fear and panic throughout the station. Ryan Cady, Andrea Mutti, K. Michael Russell, and Troy Peteri ratchet up the horror here.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
Tumblr media
Invaders #5 raises more questions after we thought some things were coming into focus in the previous issue, as Chip Zdarsky, Carlos Magno, Butch Guice, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham continue “War Ghosts”. The tension here on the brink of all out war between the US and Atlantis is incredible, and there are more interesting twists that suggest something far more sinister occurring.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Sirens #2 features a gorgeous adaptation of the story of Chinese mother goddess, Nuwa, by Chan Chau with letters by Jim Campbell. The artwork is amazingly beautiful supporting a very sweet tale.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / Archaia
Tumblr media
Justice League Odyssey #9 opens up an interesting thread that Starfire, Cyborg, and Azrael may be unduly under the influence of Darkseid. Dan Abnett is setting up some simmering conflict between Jessica Cruz and the rest of the team here, along with quite a few occult catchphrases thrown in to help amplify the mood.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Lodger #5 is the end to this excellent crime drama from the Laphams and it is all kinds of messed up. We learn what really happened to Ricky’s family and...yeah. This has been a strange, at times disturbing, ride and they stuck the landing.
| Published by IDW / Black Crown
Tumblr media
Murder Falcon #8 is the epic conclusion to this series as Jake and Murf take on Magnum Khaos. Between this series and Extremity, Daniel Warren Johnson has proven himself time and again as a master storyteller and it shines through with the heartrending end to this story. This one goes up to eleven.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Tumblr media
Red Sonja & Vampirella Meet Betty & Veronica #1 is an interesting mash-up of the three properties from Amy Chu, Maria Sanapo, Vinicius Andrade, and Taylor Esposito. Some nice fish out of water humour as Sonja and Vampirella acclimate to Riverdale.
| Published by Dynamite
Tumblr media
Savage Sword of Conan #5 concludes “The Cult of Koga Thun” from Gerry Duggan, Ron Garney, Richard Isanove, and Travis Lanham. Some interesting twists in this finale of what has been a highly entertaining adventure.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
She Could Fly: The Lost Pilot #2 sees Martín Morazzo cut loose again with some of the designs and presentation for Luna’s dreams and schizophrenic episodes.
| Published by Dark Horse / Berger Books
Tumblr media
Star Wars: Age of Rebellion - Boba Fett #1 features some incredibly rich artwork from Marc Laming and Neeraj Menon. Great detail throughout this story spotlighting Boba Fett’s cold, silent amorality.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #32 begins “Unspeakable Rebel Superweapon” as Aphra and her young protege steal the titular MacGuffin. There’s some interesting flashbacks to Aphra’s youth and it’s great to see Caspar Wijngaard doing more Star Wars art, even if just the flashbacks.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
These Savage Shores #4 is a sumptuous feast. Ram V, Sumit Kumar, Vittorio Astone, and Aditya Bidikar are elevating the artform of comics which each subsequent issue. The epistolary narrative, the horror and mythological themes, the plays upon the nine-panel grid, the shadowy character designs, the lush and spooky colours, the overlap with historical events, the unique approach and detail in each character’s missive...just one of these elements would result in an entertaining tale, this comic mixes all of them into a superlative package. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not reading this series.

The Unstoppable Wasp #7 throws Nadia a birthday party, wherein she learns of her relations to what seems like half of the Marvel universe. Also, issues a death threat to Tony Stark. It’s cute, from Jeremy Whitley, Alti Firmansyah, Espen Grundetjern, and Joe Caramagna.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 sets up the conflict in the Pacific with Sindr while introducing a swath of new international characters to the Marvel universe. Also, Amadeus Cho continues to be a massive idiot, even at his shrunken size. Great art from Gang Hyuk Lim and Federico Blee.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Wonder Twins #4 sets up the twins with a pair of dates, allowing for some hilarious misadventures. Also, Polly seems to have a weird obsession with testicular cancer. Mark Russell, Stephen Byrne, and Dave Sharpe continue the fun, even though this one kind of takes us away from all ages material.
| Published by DC Comics / Wonder Comics
Tumblr media
Wyrd #3 opens up the messy can of worms of Wyrd’s past further as a figure out of the past he can’t remember emerges for a “meet”. Great tone and atmosphere for this story from Curt Pires, Antonio Fuso, Stefano Simeone, and Micah Myers.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
X-Force #7 begins “The Counterfeit King” from Ed Brisson, Dylan Burnett, Damian Couceiro, Jesus Aburtov, and Joe Caramagna as past and present threaten to collide. Some nice character development for the team as they wait for Deathlok to do his thing.

The Real Ending of GOT
So Daenerys comes back after riding her majestic dragon and destroying and killing and putting King’s Landing out of the map.
*Arya to Jon* - Yo bro, your wifey done get crazy
*Jon* - Nah b. I’m loyal. She cool.
The Unsullied are lining up to receive Dany in her new crib, the Dothraki (or what’s left of them, I thought they were all slaughtered ?), are hyping up the new Queen, and Tyrion decides to leave the crew and drops his Hand of the Queen pin.
*Tyrion to Dany* - Hey so... I’m not really on this type of shit, you know? I don’t fuck with your crazy decisions, take a pill or something, I’m out.
*Daenerys holding a Hennessy bottle to Tyrion* - You foreal dawg? Maaan, you do you, haters gon’ hate.
Then Greyworm grabs the little man and puts him in a cage for being A REASONABLE HUMAN BEING and for being real, and gives him the bad looks.
Later on...
Daenerys is chilling in her new place, while a feng shui artist is moving furniture around, Lil Pump’s Eskeetit is playing in the background.
Enter Jon Snow.
- My Queen. I didn’t like what you just did, but hey I told you I ain’t gon leave you no cap.
- My King, you’re gonna be by main man, just say yes to everything I say.
- Ok.
Exit Jon Snow.
Enter Grey Worm.
- Yo Blondie! Lemme smell you real quick.
- Blondie? Since when you call me that? - she said approaching Greyworm.
*blade sound*
- I got your ass! You ain’t gon be a problem now! - said Greyworm stabbing Dany in the chest.
As we thought Greyworm was killing the Queen, he reaches to his face and takes off and reveals someone else’s face... It was Arya all along!
*Daenerys to Arya* - Daaamn G, I didn’t see it coming. Y tho?
*Arya* - Because you cray Dany, you were ok in the past seasons, but you kinda forgot we were supposed to be the good ones. Youse in the dark side now bish.
*Daenerys slowly dying* - Avenge me Drogon, dracarys all them mfers right now! Use Flamethrower!
Jon Snow comes back real fast and jumps in front of his sister, as Arya runs to the side.
*Drogon* - Blaaaaaaaaaaooooooooowwwwww
The fire is engulfing Jon’s body, and we can’t see it how he’s burning because the CGI budget wasn’t enough. But Damn! Drogon stops spitting fire and we still see a body standing after the fire. And Damn! It’s Jon! And he’s still alive! And he ain’t got no clothes!
*Drogon* - NANIII???!?!??!
´Insert superhero stare at the enemy´
- I can’t burn G, I’m a Targaryen, this body already be fueeeegooooooo.
*Drogon* - Damn! I’m gon leave ryt now I ain’t no regular dragon, you killed my mom, but I ain’t gonna kill you. I’m gonna spit some fire to this chair right here so you can’t be king. - as he started to blow more fire - blaaaaaaaoooowowwwwwowow
Jon and Arya are super ready to leave that place but it’s so cool to see the Iron Throne being burned, they be taking pictures and shit.
Anyway, later on.
All them rich lords gather around and they see that Jon is about the be executed by the Unsullied, but Sansa yells:
- JON SNOW IS THE RIGHTFUL HEIR TO THE THRONE, HIS NAME IS AEGON TARGARYEN AND HE BE THE REAL KING UP IN HERE!
Everybody is confused and can’t process this info, but then Tyrion appears and be like:
- That be true folks.
Now everybody is like, whoa let’s not kill the dude that killed the Queen, let’s make him King of the Seven Kingdoms. And he’s like:
- Ok imma be King. But imma do something, I’ve been cooking this since my ex went crazy. Y’all not gonna have a King from the Seven Kingdoms, I’m separating all kingdoms and each kingdom will have their own King or Queen, y’all have your own currency, and we will release visas for people to work in different kingdoms so that we can have different social classes. 7 Kings and Queens that will make sure that this continent is well and protected, instead of having one fool doing all the work.
Then everybody is like, daaaang what a fucking genius, and Jon be like full Oprah mode:
- Hey Uncle, you get a Kingdom, and Sansa you get a Kingdom, and you weird dude who drinks titty milk, you also get a Kingdom.
Everybody is happy as hell man.
But damn, then the Unsullied say: What about us bro? We fought for you.
And Jon be like: Nah sorry my dude, y’all illegal now.
Later on.
Ser Bronn is visiting Tyrion who is now free and works at a Gamestop and he be like:
- Damn Tyrion, how you end up here man. Hey listen, remember how you told me I could keep Highgarden if I didn’t kill you and Cersei lost the battle? Yeah well, listen mate, that’s bad reputation for me you feel me? I want people to think I’m straight up and to put some respekt on my name. So I can’t have you going around knowing I have Highgarden because I saved your ass.
Then booooom!, with the Lannister bow Tyrion gets bolted to the wall and slowly dies while looking at his old friend.
- Fuck you Bronn, you face fuck, I should’ve never trusted you. You better run because I’m going full Ghost Patrick Swayze on yo ass.
Meanwhile in the North...
*Queen Sansa to Jon*
- Oh hohho I see what you did there brodie, you split the Kingdom so that you didn’t have to be King anywhere and you could go on a camping trip with your homies north the Wall
- Yeah it be like that.
THE END
Post credit scene:
Sansa is walking around her brand new nail salon in Winterfell and remembers something.
´looks at the camera with desperation´
- BRAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!
Bran is seen exiting King’s Landing pushing the wheels of his wheelchair direction Winterfell.

“Okay since you guys are up, y’all wanna do something?” Karim asked as he opened his bag of gummy worms before pouring himself a cup of Hennessy. “I was thinking Never Have I Ever or Ten Fingers but with shots?” he inquired.

Jenny Lewis is following the magic
The Line of Best Fit March 20, 2019
Major life upheavals led to Jenny Lewis’ first solo album in five years but Josh Slater-Williams finds her embracing the stranger things the universe throws at her
Words by Josh Slater-Williams
Tumblr media
“People always want to know what, why, how, when. I don't know. Which? Who? Whom! Whomst!”
Jenny Lewis has told me she doesn’t have a problem talking about new record, On the Line but there’s a certain reticence to divulging much about intent or any unifying connection between the thumping, lush ballads she’s assembled. It sounds like even she won’t know what the songs are about for a while.
“I don't even really consciously write songs,” Lewis says of whether the meaning of her music is clear by the time it’s recorded and released into the world. “I believe in the magic in a way, so I'm not sure how they begin. I'm not even sure how I finish them, but I tend to understand them years later. I don't understand this new album yet because I haven't toured it. Of course, you have an intuitive sense, but I can't really tell you exactly what it's about.”
Under the Blacklight - the final record she made as part of Rilo Kiley - is perhaps the one case of knowing what an album was about before taking it on tour. “Under the Blacklight is a concept album in a lot of ways,” she says. “That was really the first time that I wrote from a character perspective or I leaned on that a little bit. But again, I'm not sure where this stuff's coming from.”
Lewis’ relationship to her former band’s music has changed over the years, from ignoring it almost entirely at shows - bar maybe one song in an encore - to seemingly embracing it with gusto. I’ve seen her in concert on three occasions since Rilo Kiley toured for the last time in 2008, and the last of those shows, at The Art School in Glasgow in 2014 in support of The Voyager, saw Rilo Kiley tracks comprise roughly a quarter of the setlist.
“For years, I didn't really dig into the back catalogue,” Lewis says. “The first time I played a Rilo Kiley song without Rilo Kiley was when I was sitting in with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band and he asked if I would play ‘Portions for Foxes’; Conor's always this incredible guide in a way. I hadn't really gone there before, but once I opened that door, it just opened the floodgates to the past. So now, I can go back and choose songs and some of them feel good. Some of them feel inappropriate. Or not inappropriate, more just really youthful in a way that doesn't suit me now. But it's surprising, which songs feel relevant. We’ve been doing a version of “Portions for Foxes”, a slowed down version that I've renamed “Bad News”. And that's been feeling really good.”
In a 2016 interview Lewis discussed her tendency to compartmentalise eras of her career describing herself as “not really one for nostalgia”; something of an ironic statement in light of the fact she was speaking in support of a tenth anniversary tour of solo debut Rabbit Fur Coat. A few years prior, she also participated in an anniversary tour for The Postal Service’s Give Up, having provided backup vocals for that platinum-selling collaboration between Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello that was a poster child for early aughts American indie music. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first Rilo Kiley EP, an initially self-titled release later re-pressed as The Initial Friend EP.
I wonder if this inspires any particularly strong feelings for her? Apparently not. “It’s interesting to acknowledge the past,” she says. “And all the songs fit into the puzzle,” that puzzle presumably being the overarching story of Jenny Lewis. “But that was then, this is now. Can’t go back.”
When Lewis does acknowledge her past work in her music or the surrounding visual material, it tends to be focused on her acting career - which lasted from her early childhood to roughly around when Rilo Kiley started recording. Bar the odd cameo – including a spot in Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray’s Netflix special, A Very Murray Christmas – Lewis’ acting credits are mostly relegated to the ‘80s and ‘90s. She paid homage to some of her more recognisable family film credits and TV guest spots in a self-directed video for The Voyager’s “She Not Me”, wherein various celebrity pals were brought on board to re-enact moments from much-loved US sitcom The Golden Girls and cult comedy Troop Beverly Hills.
Saturday Night Live-alum Vanessa Bayer was one of those celeb friends, and reappeared for a livestream listening party of On The Line that also featured the likes of St. Vincent, Jeff Goldblum, Jason Schwartzman, Beck, Danielle Haim and comedian Tim Heidecker. The three-hour “telethon” of music, comedy and interviews raised funds for the LA Downtown Women’s Center and Lewis describes the event as “kind of a disaster in the best way.” It opened with a rendition of “The Frug” from the first Rilo Kiley EP, somewhat contradicting her reticence to return to the earliest Rilo Kiley material - although the song was admittedly performed by a barbershop quartet rather than by Lewis herself. “That was the director's idea,” she clarifies, “because that song is nowhere… it's just not in my consciousness right now. But it was really fun to open the show with that. Even though the refrain is, ‘I cannot fall in love / I cannot fall in love / I cannot fall in love’, which is a weird way to start off a live stream.”
"Sharing about addiction and mental health can hopefully provide a little insight or comfort for others going through it. And it's not taboo. It's okay to talk about it and it's not the whole story. It's part of the story."
“But I can fall in love,” she assures me with timid delivery, but a wry smile. “I hadn’t then [at the time of the EP], but it’s happened since, if anyone’s wondering.” I tell her I’ve gathered the likelihood of that from the multitude of songs since that have suggested as much. I would also assume her 12-year relationship with fellow singer/songwriter Johnathan Rice may have involved some degree of love; the two reportedly mutually parted ways after the release of The Voyager.
“I’m not in love currently, but I have been in love. Once… twice. Maybe twice.”
Lewis breaks into laughter here, which happens quite a few times in a conversation that proves surprisingly prone to detours into bizarre comedy tangents. Perhaps it’s a welcome change from some of the other interviews she’s already done as part of this album’s promotion cycle. A few days before we speak, Rolling Stone publish an interview where Lewis talks openly about her troubled childhood and late mother’s history of addiction that she’s never really spoken of in public before, and a recent Mojo interview is also candid in this area too. There have been many lyrical allusions in the past, but these interviews certainly clarify the distinction between memoir and fiction in some of her songs.
Her mother’s passing in 2017 played a big part in Lewis feeling open to speak about that backstory definitively. “I now have mixed feelings about sharing that honestly,” she tells me, “even though I've spilled the beans, you can't put the worms back in the can. I guess I waited to exploit her from beyond the grave, so I would imagine someone will do the same to me.”
“I'm understanding why I feel compelled to share that,” she says. “And I think that it's part of the healing process. Not that it's anyone's business but my own and my family's business. But for me, sharing about addiction and mental health can hopefully provide a little insight or comfort for others going through it. And it's not taboo. It's okay to talk about it and it's not the whole story. It's part of the story.”
The world won’t know the full story and we don’t have the right to it, I say. “But you have a right to whatever I share,” she points out. “And then it's part of the consciousness. I guess I don't want to hurt people even if they're gone. But it is my story and it is a big part of why I’m a writer.”
If Lewis herself won’t necessarily know what the new album is ‘about’ for some time, insobriety, addiction and self-medication stick out as recurring topics throughout her lyrics for On the Line. Various combinations of drink and drugs are called out by name, not least on “Red Bull & Hennessy”, while the refrain of “Little White Dove” plays with the homophone of ‘heroine’ and ‘heroin’.
Tumblr media
Topics of sexuality have always been a thread through Lewis’ music, even dating back to the earliest days of Rilo Kiley, but with On the Line they seem particularly pronounced; often intertwining with nods to addiction and self-medication. Album opener “Heads Gonna Roll” starts with wondering “Why you stopped getting high” and closes with the suggestion that “A little bit of hooking up is good for the soul.”
“I guess it's all the same thing if you're using it in that way,” Lewis says when I ask if sex falls under the banner of self-medication in the lyrics. “But I don't necessarily think it's an unhealthy relationship with sex that I'm talking about on this album. I think it’s just an ability to articulate and use it to punctuate a moment. Like at the end of the song “Dogwood”, I didn't know what the lyric was going to be. And I was in the studio, just trying out a couple of options and then I landed on, “There's nothing we can do but screw.” That seems like a good way to end a song.”
“No subject is off limits,” Lewis continues. “Sex has always been a theme in my music.” She pauses. “And let’s hope it will always be a theme in my music! Fingers crossed.”
“Dogwood” is her favourite song on the album by a landslide: “That’s my most proud vocal performance,” she tells me. I’m personally drawn to “Taffy”, a ballad with a noticeably different rhythm to the rest of On the Line. It also happens to feature one of the album’s more attention-raising lyrics: “Nudie pics / I do not regret it / I knew that you were gone / I did so freely / I wanted you to see me off that throne you put me on.”
“Taffy was a poem that I wrote on the back of a barf bag on an airplane,” Lewis tells me, then reassuring me that the bag was unused, fresh and clean. “That was words first and then I sat down at the piano and figured out how to fit them into the puzzle. You can tell it’s a poem. That one almost didn't end up on the record. I sent it to a friend of mine who I consult with every time I make a record, as far as order goes, and there was some discussion of cutting one of the ballads. But then I thought, well, this is a record of mostly ballads. Why cut one now, we've already gone down that path. Again, you can't put the worms back in the can.”
“Beck is such a meticulous listener and producer. There's no stone left unturned...down to the last step in mastering. I'm not alone and he's thought of everything.”
Another major consultant for On the Line was Beck, who previously collaborated with Lewis on The Voyager highlight “Just One of the Guys”. He produced and played on multiple tracks on the new album. Lewis tells me she feels an affinity with him as someone who also plays with genre and personas between records. “We both grew up in Los Angeles and we remember a different kind of LA and share a lot of the same tastes in music. And I have just been a fan of his for so long; aesthetically, especially. I made demos on my GarageBand on my phone and sent them to him and he was immediately like, okay, we can do this. I am so happy with the way “Just One of the Guys” turned out and when I play it live, his arrangement really holds up. It's so thoughtful.
“He's such a meticulous listener and producer. There's no stone left unturned. I don't have to worry. Whereas with some of my other collaborators, I have to finish the heavy lifting. Or where I question: 'Is this finished?' No, it's not finished yet. I have to get it done on my own. But with Beck, down to the last step in mastering. I'm not alone and he's thought of everything.”
We don’t mention him by name but the “heavy lifting” undoubtably alludes to Ryan Adams, who reportedly left before finishing his production work on both The Voyager and On the Line. Following the recent allegations of sexual misconduct against Adams, Lewis tweeted a statement of support for the accusers.
Tumblr media
A collaborator Lewis is happy to discuss is Ringo Starr, who plays drums on “Heads Gonna Roll” and “Red Bull & Hennessy”. The Beatles are mentioned in a lyric on album closer “Rabbit Hole”, though Lewis tells me there’s another nod to the band on the track “Party Clown”: “I was a beetle floating in a bottle of red.” Lewis says, “And in my mind, after that, I say to myself, I was Ringo.”
How exactly does one get a former Beatle to play on their record? Lewis still isn’t sure. “Again, magic. May I redirect you to the magic of life and when things are truly serendipitous. It felt like a glitch in the simulation when we were in a room with Ringo. How did I end up here? I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but it happened. Why? Why? It’s crazy. I've met some cool musicians over the years, but that was tippity top.”
If there’s a major running theme to my conversation with Lewis, it’s this idea of happy chances surrounding On the Line, from the collaborators and recording to, as I’ll later find out, the look of the album and, as she’ll later find out, a surprise connection in the promotion of it. Considering a lot of the record’s material appears rooted in her breakup and mother’s passing, that maybe wasn’t applicable to the initial inception of the lyrics. But the strange fortuity even extended to her LA home almost becoming a set for a major movie production while the album was being made.
“There was a knock at my door one day about a year ago,” Lewis tells me, “and it was the location scout for Quentin Tarantino, just randomly on my street. And, he was like, “Hey, do you mind if we come in and take pictures for Quentin? We’re looking for a location for the [Charles] Manson movie.””
Tarantino’s 1969-set Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, starring Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino and the late Luke Perry, is due for release this summer. “I was like, “Come right in, photograph my house!” It didn't work out, which is probably for the better because to have a murder scene in your bedroom is probably not a good idea, but that would have been the coolest thing that ever happened. I'm such a deep movie nerd.”
Tumblr media
Being an LA native, I wonder if Lewis still gets starstruck at all at this point in her life. “Not by musicians,” she says. “I think if I were to meet Bob Dylan, that would probably be the exception. But maybe not, I don't know. I feel very comfortable among our people. I met Bill Clinton once and I wasn't nervous at all, and I asked, “Is it okay if I take a picture of you?” Because he's a musician.”
As someone 14 years her junior (Lewis is 43), I tell her my only reference for Bill Clinton being a musician is a moment of him playing a saxophone in the opening credits of the ‘90s Warner Bros. cartoon series Animaniacs. “The best show,” she says. “Did you see Daffy Duck on my live special?” Lewis being signed to Warner Bros Records is presumably how someone in a Daffy Duck costume was among the guests in her telethon. “Daffy was such a dick. They’re rebranding Daffy for the millennials, where Daffy’s vaping. And they were trying to pitch me on a sort of a co-branding opportunity for myself and Daffy. He's gonna come out on tour with me, Bez-style. Daffy’s my Bez.”
Remembering that a sequel to the Looney Tunes movie Space Jam has reportedly been greenlit, I express horror that an onscreen vaping Daffy could soon be a real possibility. “Wow,” she says, “Space Jam. What a movie.” This would rank rather high on a list of quotes I wouldn’t have expected to get from this interview.
We spend a minute or so wondering who else among the Looney Tunes would probably vape. “Is Taz too fast to vape? Maybe Porky Pig. No, no, not Porky Pig. He’s a little uptight, Porky Pig. Daffy’s cool because he doesn't know he's the way that he is. And he thinks he's like Bugs Bunny. He thinks he's Bugs. I think Bugs might vape. I could see Bugs vaping. I don't condone vaping, by the way. I don't think you should smoke anything that smells like cotton candy. I wouldn't vape if I were you. I feel like we don't know. We just don't know. There's a giant question mark on vaping, in general.” We conclude that Foghorn Leghorn would vape.
"I have the most incredible friends who are very patient and loving and are always there for a late-night Facetime session if I need them. When you're in a relationship, it's harder to maintain those friendships."
Be it with Daffy Duck or Beck, Ringo Starr, producer Shawn Everett and others, Lewis tells me a love of collaboration is one of the things she’s learned from making On the Line. “I just followed the songs and I pull from the people that I'm hanging around that inevitably become my collaborators because I can't not play music. I have a problem. If you come over to my house, it's just an immediate jam.”
That said, she doesn’t think she needs to rely on people. “I believe now that I can go anywhere with my songs and work with anyone and make something that makes me happy. I tend to get caught in the process of making a record where I want more from someone, or I want more of their time or more of their energy, and I feel like it's them and not me. But really, they're my songs and maybe it's less about who I choose to work with. It's easier to deflect, especially in the room with someone who's an artist in their own right. I can like feeling small and in the background when I'm creating in that way, as there's less pressure, but sometimes you’ve got to just step up and be yourself.”
“Autonomy, that’s been the key thing learned,” she continues. “I've connected with my female friends over the last couple of years and I've made a lot of new female friends, and that has really been one of the best things that's come out of being single in the world and autonomous. I have the most incredible friends who are very patient and loving and are always there for a late-night Facetime session if I need them. And there are three of us who live in Los Angeles, where we are just communicating constantly with each other. When you're in a relationship, it's harder to maintain those friendships.”
To quote one of Lewis’ own lyrics for Rilo Kiley’s “Breakin’ Up”, it feels good to be free.
Tumblr media
One of Lewis’ longtime friends is photographer and director Autumn de Wilde, who shoots for all of her solo projects and also shot the material for Rilo Kiley’s Under the Blacklight back in 2007. “Once I finish the music, I send it to her and then we start brainstorming and we come up with a colour palette and a concept. We never really know until we know. Like how the songs find me, I think that visual component also finds me. We prepare to get there, but we never know what the actual cover is going to be.”
This time around, constructing the visual component involved a couple more instances of that serendipity we’ve already talked about. If you were to place the two covers of The Voyager and On the Line next to each other, you’d be forgiven for thinking the latter was an outtake from a shoot for the former. The outfit’s not the same, but the crop of Lewis’ upper frame, with her head missing, is almost identical. But, according to Lewis, this was another happy accident that revealed something about the new record, conceptually: “Autumn just did a quick Polaroid with that crop, testing the light, and it fell to the floor and I saw it and I knew that was the cover. At that point, I realised they're bookends, The Voyager and On the Line.”
The front cover of On the Line features Lewis in an outfit she describes as something that her mother would have worn in the late ‘70s in Las Vegas. For a deluxe edition of the vinyl version of the record, the cover unfolds to a poster-size image of Lewis in the full outfit, head and lower half intact from merging that original Polaroid crop with a full-length outtake. “That [deluxe] cover is a reference to an Isaac Hayes record, Black Moses,” she tells me. “And the outfit that I'm wearing on the back of the record, with me on a horse, is one of Isaac Hayes's stage costumes that my friend gave to me right before the photo shoot. Just randomly. And so, there's this deep Isaac Hayes connection that was unintentional. Again, why? I have no idea why.”
"Instagram has been really the first social media that I've engaged in personally...but I do feel like it's a very dangerous world to be in and the less I engage, the happier I am. It's really fucked up on there. It's bad."
There are many meanings behind the album’s title, she tells me: “I think it will be relevant for people to think about what it means to them. It's such a dumb thing to say ‘relevant.’ I don't know what's relevant to people, but we spend our lives communicating via text and it's really hard to detect tone. I mean there are so many meanings here, but really just waiting around for someone to change or come back and they're not going to do either.
“Taffy” features one of the most overt nods to our relationship with devices, with a snapshot of infidelity glimpsed through looking through someone else’s phone: “I wanted to please you / My dress was see-through / as I looked through your phone / I am such a coward / but how could you send her flowers?"
“Instagram has been really the first social media that I've engaged in personally,” she says. “I started it as an artistic outlet for weird, abstract short films during The Postal Service reunion tour. It really was a personal creative outlet that then became like a social network. And then of course, putting out albums, there's expectation to fold in a promotional aspect. So, I use it mostly for that, the creative thing being first, and then the promotional stuff. It’s hard to navigate without feeling super cheesy, especially when all your friends are looking at everything that you post. But I do feel like it's a very dangerous world to be in and the less I engage, the happier I am. It's really fucked up on there. It's bad.”
Tumblr media
In light of the social media discussion, I can’t help but bring up an interaction of sorts that we had via Twitter once before. In the run-up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in autumn 2015, having just learned of the name of Adam Driver’s antagonist character, I tweeted: ‘Is Jenny Lewis still the frontwoman of Kylo Ren?’
I didn’t tag in Lewis’ Twitter handle for this dumb joke, but a few hours later, I discovered she’d somehow seen it and retweeted it, and my notifications went wild, with fans and famous folk alike chiming in with reactions and replies.
“Oh, that was you?!” she asks without a second’s pause after I simply quote the tweet, before mentioning what happened around it. “I remember that because I've never seen Star Wars. And I thought, who is Kylo Ren?”
I tell her it was a funny experience to suddenly be getting notifications of likes, for either my tweet or the creative fan-art replies, from such accounts as Warner Bros. Records and actor Brie Larson.
“Daffy Duck is on your case now… vaping,” she says of the Warner appreciation. “But isn't it weird that we have that connection and I didn't know that was you until you told me, but I remember it distinctly?” To quote her own earlier musings: may I redirect you to the magic of life. |
