Sorry this took so long. I wrote up two long-ass answers to this ask, and both times, tumblr decided to refresh, and I lost everything. After the last game though, I finally have the motivation to get through it.

So yes!!! Hard Bargain!!!!

Alright, so the game takes place in a small town in California called River Falls. It's an old prospecting town that makes most of its money from tourism these days. It's the sort of place people really only pass through, and so a lot of Others and Practitiners in it find themselves falling into a similar rhythm.

The town council is split between two main practitioner families. The Holloway family, a group of druids whose focus is the spirit of the massive caverns beneath the town, and the Vasquez family, a group of historic practitioners with a good amount of names and items at their call.

River Falls has been quiet for a while, but after two gristly murders; Krista Holloway has divined that if the killer isn't stopped in three days, then something catastrophic is going to happen to River Falls. With a potential diabolist in town, an odd new Pactitioner with her abyssal dogcatcher, a washed up Goblin King vying for power, and the Holloway heir running away to become a wrestler with a group of fae, getting to the bottom of everything will be difficult.

But a crack team has been assembled to deal with it! Denise Duncan, a soccer mom turned Witch Hunter. Minerva Catlow, a park ranger astrologer with a tragic past. Henrietta, a ghoul moritician in a difficult spot. Esther Bellamont, a revenge-focused girl with a bag full of tricks. And Christina Tanaka, an evangelist counselor at a bogeyman haunted Bible camp.

i'm gonna be honest, i am highly annoyed by the fact that this is one of the few times we actually get to see medic involved in direct combat and the comics decide to just kill him for the sake of, what, motivating heavy to face off classic heavy? boring ass writing decision

don't get me wrong i love the comics but i highly dislike how they played up medic to be important only to kill him off just to further the plot and give heavy more screen time 😐 they made him as disposable as a connery-era bond girl and it sucks ass so bad. what was the point of subverting the "passive healer who can't fend for themselves" trope with medic's entire character in general when you end up playing it straight for drama in the comics anyway? Fuck's sake lol

When you idly think about Celegorm possibly being most like Nerdanel of all the sons of Feanor, and then you start thinking about Nerdanel getting a post-Darkening moral decay arc all of her own to mirror her son(s)'s.

My central celegorm thesis is that he becomes what he becomes because he has a specific moral/social worldview #that is actually heavily based on 1) common cultural understanding of said worldview and 2) direct positive intervention from the valar #like he is an acolyte of a specific god and that goes with specific rights and responsibilities for everyone involved #and once the noldor arrive in beleriand that specific framework *collapses* #because the valar can't be fucked and the amanyar don't have the same religious&cultural expectations #so he upholds his end of the bargain as long as he can (both emotionally and materially) #but when it all collapses (structural damage from what happened to ardehel #and then complete collapse from the bragollach) he breaks HARD #and I think there's space for something similar with Nerdanel #who was likely raised in fairly close contact with aule and who stays faithful to the valar as feanor starts to go off the rails #who makes all the 'right' choices! and her reward is the obliteration of her family #and quite likely at least some degree of social ostracization for her association with her husband and children #not sure what her final straw would be though #...possibly it could be celebrimbor's capture and death actually. hm. #Anyway! When Crowley met Jesus, and the other demon at Golgotha

You know the scene. 33AD. Aziraphale is watching the crucifixion take place and certain fem-presenting demon sidles up to him.

Aziraphale greets them, and finds out they have changed their name.

"What is it now?" he asks them. " Mephistopheles? Asmodeus?"

I know most you have learnt by now that Asmodeus is the demon of lust, and this is obviously Aziraphale's idea of a flirty little joke (perhaps the first we see? because he's the one who's really as "mad as bag of frogs" after all and that's why Crowley's made an appearance, because he was probably just in the area, you know...), but I haven't seen or come across much meta about the first suggested name, which is a GO "lead balloon" moment.

Mephistopheles, Aziraphale? That's the name you thought of here? Of all places? jfc...you bad, bad angel! lmoa! This is a serious, sombre situation you are witnessing!

Mephistopheles is the name of the fictional demon sent to do a deal with the character Faust in a story that dates back to Germany in the early 1500s. Faust was a like a scientist in his day, well educated in things like alchemy and astrology and other mystical arts, maybe even having wizard powers (why not?) But he was hungry for more power so he did a deal with the devil for 24 years of assistance to achieve and gain anything he desired, and at the end of that time he would be claimed by Hell. Needless to say, despite starting off well it didn't have a happy ending. (I wont go into details as there are lots of variants, and its not that short, and they aren't all that relevant to the point of the post.)

It has been a hugely influential story ever since, appearing in many forms over the years; in opera, theater, movies, novels, adaptations such as Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Grey, and Queen's famous song Bohemian Rhapsody. Terry Pratchett also did a parody of it in his 1990 book Eric, and readers have often noted the similarity to the Hell depicted there to the Hell in GO.

Its the origin of the idiom "to do a deal with the devil" and a Faustian bargain. The mortals that enter into the deal with a powerful supernatural entity are usually set up to fail, and we go along with it because we are so used to the trope, its one we've come to expect the bargainer to fail in some spectacular fashion. It's one that keeps being repeated again and again because it so interesting to explore - often the protagonist is looking for some form of happiness, sometimes revenge, and hopes the deal will deliver, but find out the hard way that they should be careful what they wish for because the delivery is a two-edged sword. They may find out that they don't actually want what they thought they wanted, or they get what they want in an very unexpected way.

Back to Golgotha, and our demon and angel. We learn the demon has merely modified their name to Crowley. And yes, they met Jesus.

C: "Seemed a very bright young man. I showed him all the kingdoms of the world."

A: "Why?"

C: "He's a carpenter from Galilee, his travel opportunities are limited."

This is a reference to one of the the tests of faith Jesus was put through before his crucifixion, from the Book of Matthew.

I like this modern version I found:

For the third test, the Devil took him to the peak of a huge mountain. He gestured expansively, pointing out all the earth’s kingdoms, how glorious they all were. Then he said, “They’re yours—lock, stock, and barrel. Just go down on your knees and worship me, and they’re yours.” Jesus’ refusal was curt: “Beat it, Satan!” He backed his rebuke with a third quotation from Deuteronomy: “Worship the Lord your God, and only him. Serve him with absolute single-heartedness.” The Test was over. The Devil left. And in his place, angels! Angels came and took care of Jesus’ needs. Matthew 4:8-11 The Message

Or, you could say: Crowley showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, and offered the bargain that he could rule them all if he would renounce God and worship Satan instead, but Jesus just turned to the demonic messenger and simply told him to "fuck off!"

And there we have it, folks. Mephistopheles, and Asmodeus. Touche, Aziraphale, you sly little shit stirrer.

What’s Jake and Neytiris reaction the Absolute scolding Ronel gives them

I feel like there would be a moment of silence, ronal staring at the two with anger and them just looking back so thoroughly shocked that they have nothing to say. tonowari is just behind her, not showing a speck of disagreement within his barely hidden grimace.

neytiri wants to fight back, doesn't just want to take this scorn, but jake is trying to keep her quiet, knowing that it would be better to just talk it out.

"with all do respect, but you can't just take our kid,"

"you do not treat him like your child, you do not care for him, you do not love him."

"you have no right" neytiri would hiss, cause she's being backed into a metaphorical corner and she's not liking.

"did you realize he stopped eating? that he hasn't slept in a proper bed in almost a week or that he barely talks? did you even notice his pain, here" she places a hand on her forehead, "or here" she motions to here heart.

Jake would probably wince, try and pull Neytiri back, trying to calm the situation. "we've all been grieving, we just lost a son, you can't expect us to be perfect"

"and has anyone been there for him, helped him mourn?"

silence from all parties, Neytiri shocked, Jake biting his lip

"Its not that I expect perfection, I expect bare minimum, I expect that your son be cared for. what I expect is that he be loved and by the way he reacted to me and tonowari? I doubt he has had that."

"what are you accusing us of?" Neytiri bites

"he believed being loved was asking for too much, he felt like being offered a bed to sleep in or food he could actually eat, was too much. when he collapsed from hunger while aiding my son in the clean up, he thought being given aid and support was taking too much attention. He flinches from me and my mate's touch, he dismisses any sort of attention, he tried to deny medical care. He is in pain, he is scared, and yet he is more worried about pulling attention off of himself than letting us take care of him. why is a child so self sacrificial? why is he so scared of being loved, of being given attention? why does he feel so undeserving?" her voice was trembling as anger was turning to tears.

at that point both mother's would be falling into their husbands, ronal exhausted, neytiri in shock. tonowari clenching his jaw in attempts to keep his own eyes from water, and jake with his mouth agape, jaw on the floor after hearing of his "son's" condition.

"you will go back to your children, you will love them as you have loved them their whole lives, and you will leave spider in our care, and you will stop questioning me. spider is deserves more then this, more then what he has been given." her voice quiet.

"we understand that your feelings on the boy are complicated and in a way justified after all you've been through; the skypeople, the rda, the people he came from, hurt you so horribly; you put that blame on him because you were hurting. But do not think we will allow this to continue because you selfishly want to hold onto him." tonowari finally speaks, his own voice is just as choked as his wife's.

neytiri looks up at jake, nods, before turning away and back to their hut, something heavy and undefinable written all over her face and body. jake stays back, his whole body starting to tense and shake.

"we never meant to... he was just, I-"

"we know, so do the right thing, and give him up" ronal cuts him off, she doesn't sound like she agrees with her words, but she bites her tongue.

"yeah, right, just... just treat him right, I know you will, but..." the words die on his tongue, and slowly, he turns to leave, knowing that this was the night he lost a second son.
