- Haesu to Su-A in Chapter 95 of Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid

I remembered reading the author's interview on the writing process of Whale Star (unfortunately I don't remember which website I read it from), I think she wrote powerful dialogues and monologues which she really give some thoughts to. She really tried to think what kind of conversation or thoughts would the characters have and the context in it.

In this case, this dialogue happened after Su-A was shot by the Japanese soldier and reuniting with Haesu and Uihyeon. Although the word "love" or "like" wasn't mentioned, what Haesu implies at that time feels like a confession especially when it's the first time they meet again when Su-A departs without him to find Uihyeon. It also shows how he came to care for Su-A, the girl he tried to poison in the past.

At some point in the story, I wanted to cheer for him and hope that he will one day be able to live happily.

"You like me."

Haesu says it like a statement but he waits for your reply, and you don't really know what to say.

You've often seen him observe most things with lazy curiosity. Peering half lidded even as you know his brain is whirring and scheming away.

Right now he watches you with keen interest. And it feels a little too much. Like a shot of espresso too many.

You consider lying, but he knows you too well. Knows all your tells, like you know his. He would see through your lies in a split second.

Besides, it's obvious anyway, at this point. Joshua already teases you enough for your crush and you suppose it's only a matter of time before Haesu realises too.

He's more shrewd and more perceptive than anyone gives him credit for. At first glance. Before they learn his bite is much worse than his bark and the moment for wariness has long gone.

So you give him the truth. It's the only option you have.

"Yep," you aim for casual, trying to give a grin as you admit your feelings. Fake it until you make it.

His face softens and you're surprised.

You're surprised and you shouldn't be because you realise that he's looked at you like this a thousand times before.

It softens the same way as when you threaten to cut his overgrown bangs.

When he says he's hungry and you offer food.

When he realises it's you waking him from his catnaps in the shared space, and telling him to go to bed.

Haesu's reply is small and simple. Enough for his own confession.

"Good."

And you know he means it sincerely, genuinely. With that one word he says l like you too.

Because you know all his tells, like he knows yours.

There is a stray near your house.

A cat, somewhere around three to four years old. You know because you saw him as a kitten, abandoned on the street with no way to fend his back. You ask your grandmother about adopting him, but her refusal was prompt and straightforward. Nowhere near old enough for the responsibility of a pet, you were, and she didn't have time to take care of him while looking after you either.

The idea vanished. The kitten remained on the street. You made a little shelter for him and brought him food when you got the chance. He had been staying there since. You call him Wonho like he's a boy, not a cat. He has been your friend since you were ten.

Since then, Wonho has grown into the street, no longer cowering and whimpering in front of danger. You saw him making friends at times when he led other cats to the little shelter you made, all anticipating the food you brought them. Not once, have you missed a day, even when you couldn't bring much. And Wonho would always be in his spot, constant, never-changing. The little addition to your life.

There is a stray near your house.

A boy, somewhere around your age. You know because even with his lanky gait, he's scrawny and malnourished. Only an inch, barely an inch, taller than you. You have never seen him around before, but he appears one morning before you go to school. He remains silent, rooted in his spot when you set your eyes on him. For a while, you're confused, not understanding his attention.

Then you turn to Wonho, still eating the leftovers you saved aside for him from dinner last night, and back to the boy again, his hand is on his stomach. A thought occurs, that might not be your smartest one. You rummage through your backpack for the snacks you saved for recess.

He doesn't notice you, not at first, too fixated on Wonho feasting on his meal to notice. Your approach is a surprise for him. When he puts his attention on you, he does not know what to quite make of it. You see the confusion on his face, the slight draw of his brows before his eyes turn to your proffered hands. An offering, sweet bread and chips.

It won't be much but—

Before you can register the thought, the boy snatches the food from your hands and tears into them. All you can do in front of his ravenous gobbling is stare. The shock renders you speechless while witnessing the spectacle, but before a word can be uttered, you hear your name getting called.

Your grandmother recaptures your attention with worry marring her features. Your concern over school overrides any thought about the boy. Quick on your steps, you return to her side and go on with your day. You glance back at him in an impulsion, half wondering if he'd up and vanish the moment you turn away.

But he stays, and this time, his eyes are on you as you walk away.

You turned your head to the sound of your lover's voice as you yawned. A look of amusement colored in your tired expression at the sight of him casually laying in your bed, propping his head up with his palm and elbow to look at you. On his face was a blank expression, but he always looked like that. Nonetheless, his relaxation was a complete contrast to how burnt out you felt from studying.

"You should take a break."

Rubbing your eye and yawning again, you agree with a sleepy nod. "I definitely deserve one after all this."

"So... snack break or nap time?"

"You just want to eat my snacks free of charge again, don't you?" you chuckled, making him smile a bit.

"Food's as important as rest." He scooted back a bit as you crawled into bed next to him.

You exhale in relief as you settle into your comfortable bed. "You can go steal my snacks, but don't touch my favorite stash. I'm gonna be busy napping the evening away."

Haesu huffed and pulled you in to rest against his chest. "They won't taste as good without you around, so I'll just nap with you."

You look up at him, grinning. "Wow, you being cheesy? That's a first."

"Yeah, well..." Annoyance flashed on his face, but his slightly pink cheeks told a different story. "Forget it. I don't even have anything to reply with." He sighed while you laughed softly and moved upwards just enough to kiss his cheek.

"Good night~"

His own short, soft laughter joined yours. "Mm, good night."

anyway! how about Seo Haesu from How To Fight falling in love with someone? would he try to date? hide from the shadows? I dunno, I haven’t seen a lot of posts about him but his stupid little smirk is so endearing.

I have big soft spot for Seo Haesu even if he’s going to do something immoral 🤡 He has the exact vibe I always go for in story, so.

Anyway, I can definitely see him falling for someone “normal”, I think the little, innocent kindness does a lot to stir his heart even if he doesn’t express it. I’m brainstorming this idea about the reader being someone he saw in the neighborhood and infrequently interacting with her. He has a little crush but he will never do anything about it. You know when someone who lives in the dark his entire life finally has a little spark in the palm of his hand, he would anything to protect it? Yep, that’s his approach to her. He will do nothing about his feelings, will stay away at all cost if possible to avoid further development.

Turned out, he didn’t have to try. He got into another mess, thrown into the juvenile center again. Then he got out. He returned to the same spot. It’s an impulse really, he didn’t expect to see you again. But then he did, and the same cycle repeated. Juvenile center, you, juvenile center, you, juvenile center, you. Then the cycle stopped. He went to the damned academy and met the man who will change his life forever for better or for worse. Once again, with freedom, he seeks you out.

“…I won’t come here ever again.”

“What?”

“Sorry.”

Your reunion is brief and cryptic. He stays true to his words. Whatever fancy dream he harbored in his simpler times vanished into dust and motes. With finally a future to look forward to, he has to cut ties with his “innocent” days, if he can call them as such. The destination he’s heading towards… it’s a place where he can’t bring you, not if he wants you to be safe and happy. So the story ends, quiet and listless, a disappointing ending of a love story in his already disappointing life.
