A second entry in this season from the Jane's Combat Simulations series of military simulation games, unlike the majority that are flight combat simulation games, Jane's Combat Simulations 688I Hunter Killer is a military simulation based around submarines.

Developed by Electronic Arts and Sonalysts, Jane's Combat Simulations 688(I) Hunter/Killer was released for Windows in 1997. The game has been re-released several times over the years, the most recent of these was on GOG.com in 2023.

The game was released on Steam back in 2006, while not having its own listing anymore it is a part of the Classic Navel Combat Pack and the Complete Navel Combat Pack.

"We're no different, you and I."

I liked the part with the shitty CGI elk.

A completely ridiculous action movie with a plot that's aged like milk during the eternity of the last four years. Dramatic music and shakey camerawork were omnipresent, yet it never really managed actual excitement. In one scene the camera did a stylish, slow-mo, 360 degree rotation around some people standing completely still and doing nothing, which pretty well encapsulates the tone of the whole movie.

The best I can say about Hunter Killer is that it could have been worse. Every new development in the story made the whole thing just a little more ridiculous, until by the end the situation was ludicrously unbelievable. The movie went to great lengths to convince me that the characters were badass, but did not succeed.

There were a lot of plot points that simply didn't make sense, but the general feeling was that it didn't matter. Everything just plodded along by the numbers, maintaining a baseline of mild entertainment. I loved the way the US control centre staff dropped what they were doing at the end to applaud themselves, even though they didn't actually accomplish anything.

A generic military action flick. Watchable, but quite unmemorable.
