got a bunch of little baby plants and am doing some repotting but damn i have a hard time remembering which ones can't have direct light
all but a few of them are low light types because i don't like window or overhead light (i am a cave gremlin)
but some of them need at least indirect light and i'm trying to get those situated well to the french doors (also i bought another seasonal fern bc i am weak and it's hogging a bunch of the space)
some of the tiny ones are barely hanging on and idk what to do else besides sun+ water
i thiiiink it's the tiny peperomia, the mini spider plant, and the aglaonema that really need out of the direct sunbeams and the couple of little succulents that need moved in more
the one snake plant that i haven't watered for six months needed a bigger pot so i upgraded it and i hope it takes it well. the bitty pearl pothos doesn't need a bigger pot but less sun and more drainage i think, so it got a new pot too
why do i get tempted by plants when i hate natural light so much? i did buy a *little* grow light for the corner though
i need plants that are ok with just ambient low light - the sansevieria is out of the window reach entirely but has been putting up fresh green shoots? the big peace lily keeps unfurling new leaves in the dark corner as long as it gets plenty of water?
but the other peace lily that was by the window is crunchy now and idk how to rehab it (still green? and not wilted but the leaves are crunkly so)
also i seeded some rosemary and sage and they are sprouting but the mint did not come up at all ://
#someone stop me from buying more snake plants just bc they survive#i killed my poor desk philodendron idk how and the diffenbachia too#i need more idiot proof plants but i keep having hopes when i walk past the racks outside the store#i need a palm or something tall for the living room across from the peace lily that just gets a tiny bit more light#also i want a billion succulents but one outdoor one died and its still hard to restrain myself#i need plants that light 60watt lamp light for by the bed where no natural light reaches lol#but also i need an explanation of where this indoor plant hunger comes from#i have a yard but everything out there dies come the months of baking heat#and only the grass really comes back - it's going gangbusters in the empty plant bed right now where nothing else seems to grow#(but weeds)#and if i have to bring the plants in for the summer they can't need bright light which is what they would get on the porch#also i don't want to bring bugs inside quite frankly - the spiders are enough for me (the gnat or two is too many)#i need to figure out how to get my pothos to be fluffier again rather than super leggy it's ridiculous#plant whining#i desperately want a ficus and i'm so afraid i can't keep it alive#i am very attentive for a while but then there will be a period where i keep thinking 'i will water tomorrow' only it can be almost a week#mainly i think the tap water is not great and i now i want to water with filtered water but i think i keep using more water than i should#why can't plant-coddling instincts be inherited? i just don't have that 'feel' for exactly what they need like my mom

Ok bear with me, because I'm about to go off on a tangent. Due to my current hyperfixation on all things houseplants, I have recently spent what my partner referred to as a "concerning" amount of money and time tending to/learning about/procuring plants and their related accessories.
Now I'm not saying he's totally wrong in feeling like I might be going off the deep end in my pursuit of dopamine but in my defense, I offer this: YEAH BUT THEY ARE FUN. AND CUTE. AND SHUT UP ITS MY MONEY LEAVE MY PLANT BABIES OUT OF THIS
But seriously, i promised I'd stop buying so much stuff from Amazon, and I did. But then I realized that you can buy all kinds of different plant cuttings and starter plants on Etsy, and I ended up buying a select variety that I really want but don't want to pay $100+ for a plant in a 6 inch pot. Some of these prices for trendy plants are insane! Anyway I'm kind of obsessing over Philodendrons so I got 3 oh-so-trendy starters that were about $20 each:
Philodendron Ring of Fire
Philodendron White Wizard
Philodendron Gloriosum (dark form)
And I also got cuttings of the following for $3.95 each:
N'Joy Pothos
Marble Queen Pothos
Manjula Pothos
I don't know if anybody that follows me is into plants, but I'm really happy about this and again, yeah, I know it's still spending money, but the way I look at it is, I'm SAVING money by getting smaller plants plus I get the enjoyment of watching them grow bigger in a controlled environment! So, you know, I'm not saying it's the most responsible thing to do but listen...have you seen what's happening in the world lately? Shit is depressing and I need to touch leaves sometimes

Finally doing my full Gardyn review!
Here she is in her full glory:
Tumblr media
So, at this point we had multiple types of lettuce, Swiss Chard, Tatsoi, Tomatoes, Thyme, Basil, Cilantro, Arugula and Mustard. It provided enough greens to have salad as a main course for dinner for three nights a week! Being indoors and soilless there were no pesticides used at any point. I would cut the leaves off as I made dinner, doesn’t get any fresher!
What is a Gardyn?
Gardyn is a fully automated, all in one, hydroponic gardening unit.
It starts with the base. The bottom of the unit is a tank which holds up to 6 gallons of water.
Tumblr media
This does mean the unit is pretty heavy when it’s full, but if you’re strong or have two people it’s not too bad to move. When you receive it it is empty, so the initial set up is not too bad. Some people online do make rolling carts for them that are very nice if you struggle to move that much weight! It is a neutral color so it goes pretty nicely anywhere. I actually think it makes a nice decorative piece, especially when it is full! It also has enough space on top, maybe not if your unit is totally full, for your other seedlings/propagations!
After the base we have the lid. This is made of wood, so it looks pretty nice.
Tumblr media
Underneath is where the pump and the drains for each tower is located. It has a small opening for refills, which I do about once or twice a week depending on how hot it is.
The columns screw into the lids. These were one of the worst parts of set up honestly. They have a rubber tube holding them together so I do recommend grabbing someone to help, maybe it was just me! Each section unscrews individually for cleaning and it holds and total of 32 plants if you use each space!
Tumblr media
There is a bar across the back to provide support, which does have a wall mount. If you have kids or curious pets I would recommend mounting it to the wall.
Tumblr media
In front of the columns are the lights. There are one on each side and they are labeled which side is which. This is one of the tougher things to set up with this unit.
Tumblr media
It is incredibly bright. It does not bother me at all, I have grow lights everywhere, but it might be an issue if it’s near a place you relax.
The lights do have camera built into them. These sync with the app, where the AI can help diagnose issues and provide a time lapse of growth. This made me a bit nervous at first but the are stationary and if up against the wall that is all it will see. More on all of that below!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is what she looks like know. As someone with heavy depression it is nice how automatic she is. Lot of the greens survived until they bolted and we let them die naturally. If you have compost it would make a great addition. Even with little to no maintenance for a few weeks she is still blooming!
Tumblr media
Pros
Fresh, organic produce ready at a moments notice
The ability to grow flowers as well/instead of you prefer
Soilless, which helps prevent a lot of pests
Helps freshen air indoors
Built in lights means it can go anywhere
Cons
Deep cleans recommended every six months can be intense
Plants are still susceptible to a few pests, specifically spider mites
The light is very bright
Sometimes the App just does not do what you want it to
The initial price is pretty high
Accessories from Gardyn can be expensive and come with so few
Now, the most controversial thing about this unit is the App/membership. I will start by saying, you can 100% not use the membership at all. You can purchase any accessories outside of it and find pretty much anything outside of their store that you would need if you can get creative.
The app and and internet connection however is required. This is how the unit syncs to the time and you set the light/watering schedule. So without both an internet connection and working smart phone this isn’t really a good option
Despite the fact you do not need a membership, I do love and recommend it. Currently the membership is $40 pre month. This gives you a lot more options in the app, but you also get credits which allow for up to 10 seed cubes with free shipping every month. That basically pays for it alone!
All in all, if you can afford it and are looking for something like this, I can recommend this enough. This post is not sponsored, but as a member I do have a discount code which will get you $125 off the unit if you’re buying anyway!

Me and my mother have really gotten into windowsill gardening this year - mostly because of the ever rising cost of food. But I also planted something that’s special to me for another reason. These three were red geranium seeds that I planted exactly one month ago. The photo on the left is from before my trip, and on the right it’s after the trip - just a bit over a week later. I planted three seeds just because I wasn’t sure if they’d all sprout, but they did. The small one was unlucky and had some trouble. I wasn’t sure if it would survive (which made me realize how fitting it is that three of them sprouted), but after some support it’s still growing - even if slowly.
They’ve all come a long way from this:

lol researching how to grow pot rn and wowzers this is intense.
#maybe net year if i grow a fourth plant i'll take after my childhood neighbor and just throw it in a pot and leave it alone for four months#apparently the plant was massive and had an insane amount of buds with literally no upkeep#but nah#reading up on how a single plant can provide 1/2lbs worth of weed and im like YO#and here i am gonna do 3 plants.#i prolly will make some edibles honestly especially with the shake (stems leaves etc)#cause you know i aint about wasting anything#but no seriously it's so intense the amount of fertilizer you need to keep track of#i worked under the table at a dispensery when i was 14 and it was HARD FUCKING WORK and i was only pouring the fertilized water into the#pots and cleaning out the buckets and lifting the soil and transplanting when it was time for a repot#but that was also indoor plants and im doing outdoor which is way easier#i wont have to adjust the lights or the temperature or the fan.#but yeah like i said i wasnt even working out the fertilizer back then or the space requirements i was just doing whati was told#now i have to figure all this shit out on my own lol#but no i figure if i fit it into a cage that my plug is able to grow 6 massive plants in... i should be able to have 3 absolute hugh mongus#plants by fall. im gonna let them get as tall as they possibly can#i found out they can get over 10 ft tall earlier and it made me full on chuckle at the idea of my 5'0 self being towered over by a plant#x2 my height.... (not only one plant--but three.) and then SMOKING that shit#they say one plant lasts around 8 months of smoking.#besties those three plants are gonna last me 8 months of smoking LOLLLLLL#i could even make money from this honestly#i dont really like edibles but i know the people around here go fucking wild for them#catch me outsideeeee

shoutout 2 spider plants: the most resourceful and understanding of indoor foliage companions.
i can take the World’s Longest Sadness Nap amidst circumstances that leave me too emotionally compromised to go into the household common areas for like a week and a half
and when i finally steel myself to confront the guilt of what i’m positive will be a roomful of super dead spider plants
somehow those magnificent bastards are all alive and actually look totally normal and fine and it turns out i’ve been melodramatically doomspiraling for several days now over nothing. 🙃🙃

🌦Today really is a day to curl up in the living room and enjoy the natural lighting sort of day. There is supposed to be a storm today, so I’ll take it while it lasts. My devil’s ivy transplants are doing well.
