JK said he wanted to appeal to a western audience with his debut solo album, hence all the English tracks and being heavy on pop tracks of late
the tracks are almost nostalgic. despite hearing them for the first time, they feel very familiar
i’m hearing a lot of early-mid 2000’s pop (anyone else hear Jesse McCartney somehow or is that just me??) and early 2010’s EDM/club music that was e v e r y w h e r e then (DJ Snake and Major Lazer are present in the album after all)
and i think that’s where it becomes a double-edged sword
in his pursuit of becoming a “global” pop star, Golden feels like a product of having studied western pop hits from the last two decades to find the elements that had the most appeal to a general public — which i believe it was able to identify and latch on to. unfortunately, it does make it feel a little dated at times as it sounds like tracks we have heard so much of before.
overall, Golden makes a case for Jungkook as he presents himself as a “global” pop soloist but feels like it relies a lot on a safe, tried and tested type of approach to pop music rather than making a bold personal statement?
that said, Standing Next To You is such a standout track — i absolutely love all the layers to it (as a sucker for synths and disco influence) — absolutely deserves all the attention it’s getting and more !!
