Tugboat Annie
New Yorkers were enduring the dog days of August, and those who couldn’t escape the heat by fleeing to the country or the beach could find cool respite at the movies.
August 19, 1933 cover by Gardner Rea.
It was doubtless in an air-conditioned theatre where critic John Mosher enjoyed the craft of older actors, in this case Wallace Beery and Marie Dressler in Tugboat Annie. Although the film…

This is a drawing tribute made from a magnificent illustration by Gluyas Williams, a fabulous artist who was noted for his contributions to The New Yorker, Boston Globe, Life, Collier's, Century and other magazines and newspapers. His drawings often dealt with prevailing themes of the time, reflecting a classic costumbrismo, depicting scenes from the upper-middle class of interwar North America. An admirer of Aubrey Beardsley, his black and white drawings are made with a delicate but firm line, supported by strategically arranged black masses, which give the scene that precise balance. My drawing is made with pencil and markers as almost always.

Stories from the big chair. Specifically A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories by Flannery O’Connor. Lou, you’re such an old man XD
This is based on an illustration by Gluyas Williams. I thought it looked neat and wanted to make my own version, but I struggled a lot for a style... Which explains enough when you know that this is about a year old now. And all I did was make the chair lineless and make the text red in all that time of sitting on it. HAH! But hey, I won’t post this to Instagram because the thought of editing it to a sizeable appearance makes my head hurt. So this is for you guys!
Below the cut is a copy of that illustration and a low-res gif of “Lou spinning” I shared on Insta when I was starting with it.

Making Hays
The name Will Hays will always be linked to the Motion Picture Production Code, a set of industry guidelines for the self-censorship that studios adopted to avoid direct government intervention.
June 10, 1933 cover by Harry Brown.
Hays, however, played both sides in the culture wars. A Republican politician, Hays (1879–1954) managed the 1920 election of Warren G. Harding before moving on to…
