The Israeli military said it has taken "operational control" of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, the only point of exit and entry between Gaza and Egypt.
The military said that its 401st Armoured Brigade captured the crossing in southern Gaza on Tuesday morning, following an overnight military operation.
The 84th Givati Brigade disconnected Salah al-Din road in eastern Rafah from the crossing with Egypt during the operation. The Israeli military said it killed 20 Hamas fighters and found three tunnel shafts. Gaza's General Authority for Crossings and Borders said that passenger entry, as well as aid deliveries into the Rafah crossing have been halted following Israel's invasion of the area.
An Israeli army vehicle was also seen driving along the Gaza-Egypt boundary, holding up a huge Israeli flag and the flag of the 401st Brigade. Footage taken from an Israeli tank posted on social media showed the vehicle bulldozing a sign reading: "I (heart) Gaza" "Gaza’s only window to the world is being stormed & destroyed by Israeli tanks," said Gaza-based Palestinian journalist Hind Khoudary.
The Rafah crossing is a vital lifeline for Palestinians, as the only gateway in and out of the enclave not directly controlled by Israel. Since Hamas took control of the territory in 2007, the crossing has been jointly controlled by Egypt and Hamas. Over one million displaced Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, many in makeshift homes and tents. On Monday, Israel ordered 250,000 Palestinians to leave Rafah, as it began to heavily bombard the eastern part of the city ahead of its planned ground invasion.
Palestinians currently in Rafah have told Middle East Eye that the people sheltering there are in a state of panic, and are concerned that they will not be safe even if they leave, given their experiences in Gaza over the past seven months.

Israeli army battalions and companies often compete in designing the most outrageously racist shirt that they can show off in front of the rest. The Israeli daily Haaretz published some examples and photographs of these T-shirts. One T-shirt for infantry snipers “bears the inscription ‘Better use Durex,’ next to a picture of a dead Palestinian baby, with his weeping mother and a teddy bear beside him.” Another sharpshooters’ shirt from the Givati Brigade’s Shaked battalion “shows a pregnant Palestinian woman with a bull’s-eye superimposed on her belly, with the slogan, in English, ‘1 shot, 2 kills.’” Several prints depicted ruined, destroyed, or blown-up mosques, revealing a deeply entrenched Islamophobic tendency that is appallingly reminiscent of 1930s anti-Semitic cartoons in Europe. Another design shows a soldier raping a Palestinian girl, and underneath it says, “No virgins, no terror attacks.” Israeli sociologist Orna Sasson-Levy said that this phenomenon is “part of a radicalization process the entire country is undergoing, and the soldiers are at its forefront.” She added: “There is a perception that the Palestinian is not a person, a human being entitled to basic rights, and therefore anything may be done to him.” Was Israel simply “morally corrupted” by the occupation? It’s not uncommon for Israeli analysts from the Zionist “left” to try to explain the dominant racism and genocidal trends among Israelis as relatively new phenomena, departures from the good old days of liberalism and enlightenment, or signs of moral collapse. All such explanations have one thing in common: they betray the same symptoms of selective amnesia displayed by those on the right. They ignore the fact that Israel’s very establishment was a result of massive ethnic cleansing, massacres, rape, wanton destruction of hundreds of villages, and total denial of the most basic rights to the indigenous Palestinians who were dispossessed and exiled and those who remained despite all the attempts to annihilate their existence as a people with a distinct identity. During the Nakba, the massive campaign of ethnic cleansing by Zionist militias and later the Israeli army against the indigenous Palestinians, as Israeli historian Ilan Pappé, among others, has shown, was premeditated, meticulously planned years in advance by Zionist leaders, including David Ben-Gurion, and executed systematically, brutally, and without compunction. As a result, over 800,000 Palestinians were dispossessed and uprooted and more than five hundred Palestinian villages were methodically destroyed to prevent the return of the refugees.

The Israel Defense Forces’ 98th Division, which includes the Commando Brigade and other special forces, launched a raid of Khan Yunis, Hamas’s stronghold in southern Gaza, IDF Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari announced on Wednesday evening, adding that Hamas was surprised by the raid.
“Within a few hours, the soldiers pierced through the defensive lines of the [Hamas] Khan Yunis Brigade, encircling it, and for the first time began to operate in the heart of the area. From the outset, the troops eliminated a number of terrorists and with aerial support, located approximately 30 tunnel shafts and destroyed them,” the IDF said in a statement.
“The forces struck multiple terrorist targets in the area. The forces raided a Hamas battalion post, and found weapons and intelligence materials. At the same time, other IDF troops are encircling the city of Khan Yunis,” stated the military. “The Commando Unit and the Givati Brigade arrived at the center of Khan Yunis, and began targeted raids in the heart of the city. The soldiers eliminated terrorists, destroyed terrorist infrastructure and located weapons. In addition, terrorist targets were struck, including a mosque that was used as a storage facility for weapons.”
The Khan Yunis Brigade is one of the two of Hamas’s most significant brigades. The city is a terrorist stronghold, said the IDF, and is identified as a symbol of Hamas’s military and administrative rule. “The entire leadership of the Hamas terrorist organization, both military and political, proliferated in the area of Khan Yunis, among them Yahya Sinwar, Muhammad Sinwar and Muhammad Deif. Currently, the area is secured by the 98th Division,” said the military.
Alongside this effort, Hagari said, the IDF is working according to a precise map of the whereabouts of Gazan civilians, evacuating them and ensuring the supply of food, water and fuel, which enables desalination and water pumps to continue to work.
“This separates civilians from terrorists and enlarges our ability to fight,” said Hagari.
“The attacks on Hamas in Khan Yunis are being guided by real-time intelligence,” he stressed.

🔻 Seventeen days have passed since the start of Israel's ground attack on Gaza. The army of this regime has about 4 Divisions - including the 80th Edom Division, the 143rd Gaza Division, the 162nd HaPlada Division and the 252nd Sinai Division - along with three special force brigades - the Givati, Golani, and Nahal - and also special units such as the Egoz Unit (the only specialized anti-guerrilla unit of the Israeli army). Now, the wheels of the war machine of the world's fourth biggest army have been stopped in the areas marked in purple.
▪️It should be noted that up until now, Israel has lost more than twice the total number of Merkava tanks that it lost during the 33-Day War. And back then, they were Merkava 3 tanks, while these are Merkava 4. Nonetheless, the actual statistics are much more than the announced casualties because Israel has prevented the announcement of all casualties and only announces about one-fifth of its casualties.
