So recently I was listening to one of my favourite podcasts while on a business trip by train through the Swiss Alps to Zurich. 'The Rest Is History' hosted historians Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland were quite topical talking about France under de Gaulle and the student riots of 1968 as well as its legacy towards France’s current troubles with civil disorder.
The recent riots starting in Nanterre and beyond were troubling and significant. However outsiders not knowing the French or their culture and history thought it was either the fall of the Fifth Republic or start of the collapse of Western civilisation itself. It was nothing of the sort. For the most part the French think it healthy to blow off steam and have a jolly good riot in the same way people in England blow off steam by writing an angry letter to the editor of the Times. It’s just how things are. As predicted, things have gotten quiet now.
In their podcast Sandbrook and Holland cheekily suggested that the fizzling out of les evénéments – the student protests of 1968, during which it seemed that another of France’s periodic revolutions might ignite - had something to do with the Whitsun holidays. Realising that their Parisian parents were setting off for their holiday homes in the French countryside or the southern coast, the elitist student leaders put down their high minded revolutionary leftist philosophical slogans aside for the bourgeois comfort of vacances en famille. There is a lot of truth to that.
All this is to say les grandes vacancies have already begun in France. The grand vacation of July and August is an entrenched tradition in the French psyche. So ingrained is this tradition that until 2015 there were regulations still in place dating back to the French revolution that governed when bakers in Paris could take their holidays, so as not to deprive the city’s populace of their daily bread (not quite baguette, because that was invented later by the Austrians camped out in the Champs de Mars after the fall of Napoleon - but that’s another story).
That France is in the middle of les grandes vacances can be seen here in Paris. Parisians are leaving their apartments and heading out to the countryside or down south to the Med - to be offfeeling handedly rude and entitled towards the locals. Schools have been closed since June. Many shops are closed or not nearly as crowded as usual, most of the people wandering the streets have cameras around their necks. Of course not everyone goes and those that stay can feel freer until the first glut of tourists arrive.
For many France in August is definitely their favourite time of the year. And every summer I’m reminded just how much French language and culture are inseparable by the fact that there are words for people who take their annual vacation in July, les juillettistes, or in August, les aoûtiens.
Most French people have 5 weeks of paid vacation per year, and some have even more time off with the inclusion of their RTTs (essentially, personal days) for those who work more than 35 hours per week. I work close to 80 hours a week, so I'm ready for my break from the corporate treadmill.
So my blog will be shut down for the rest of the summer as I go away on vacation. I’ll be back in early September.
I use this time to switch off my phone and strictly no social media as I go off grid. It's a question of valuing one's mental health. I hope you can do the same.
Thank you for following my blog and appreciating my eclectic posts.
I wish you all the best.
Have a great summer!

gonna try to keep this quick (sorry i did my best but it's still pretty long), but i feel like people are not aware enough, even in France.
Tumblr media
so last week, a 17y old boy was killed in Nanterre (what we call the "banlieue", so in periphery of Paris) by a cop. they made him stop on the side of the road and threatened him violently asking him to open the door. on the video, we can see the cop duo at the driver side window. one of them has his gun drawn to the boy's head. the other one says "shoote le" (shoot him) and the cop with his gun drawn says "jvais te mettre une balle dans la tête" (im gonna put a bullet in your head). the boy whose name is Nahel is logically scared so he speeds away. the cop shoots him in the car, bullet in the thorax and the car hits a wall. Nahel is dead and the video is quickly relayed on twitter to mass outrage.
most left leaning people condemn this and ask for justice, but the media keeps asking them to ask for calm and order (which some do, looking at Roussel) but some don't, which alienates them in the political landscape (the favorite word of the right rn is islamogauchiste aka islamiclefty).
but the right, god the right. first they said Nahel deserved it because he was driving without a license. then it was saying he was a criminal that had already been convicted (the cops leaked a fake criminal record). so not a criminal, but he was an Arab so he would've become one, right? and he should've just obeyed the cops and he would have been ok, that's the behavior of a criminal. I think you get the gist, fascist and fascist adjacent justifications for a cop murdering a boy.
since then, there have been riots in Nanterre and all around France, and the State, Macron (President) and Darmanin (Interior Minister) have sent cops galore. Now, the last time something like this happened was in 2005, when we had less social media and the only pictures and videos we had were from the media (opposed to the riots). Today with Snapchat and Twitter, we can see the pov of the rioters and people are realizing that amidst the anger people feel, they find joy in community, and the vibes in the riots are good and joyful at times (a guy asking another guy to go take a yop for him in the market they're breaking and stealing from comes to mind). They can't say just as easily that they're angry and irrational animal because they see the humanity in the riots (they shouldn't need it but well).
now there is a debate amongst both the rioters and the left who stays mostly outside of it. Are they being useful? breaking and burning the right things? should they go to Paris and take the risk of fighting against cops in streets that they don't know as well as their own? factually, they are mostly burning cars, trash and big companies' shops. But people are choosing to only see the rare schools and libraries being burned downed (who were, for a lot of them already falling down because the State doesn't give money to the periphery). Now, it seems logical to say that burning down your middle school is not going to help against police violence. But it feels like the same people who praise the revolution any chance they get refuse to understand that it comes at a price, with violence and at least a bit of destruction. And the right is using this to discredit the whole movement.
back to fascists. First, the cop "unions" Alliance and UNSA Police published a press release calling the rioters (so mostly Arab and Black people, but also poor white people living in the periphery) "nuisibles" (pest, the word used for animals harming the ecosystem). They wrote that the cops will resist, that they are at war, that they will bring order back. In short they want to kill POC. And they have help. Fascists groups have taken advantage of the situation to walk around blocks during the day and beating up people with bats and at night to illegally arrest rioters before tying them down with zip ties and giving them over to cops. and these people arrested who are sometimes barely older than 18 end up with 18 months of jail for burning trashcans and 10 months for stealing a can of Monster (and those are not suspended sentences).
and while these people end up in jail (thus making it more likely that they will end up with shitty jobs and shitty pensions), Jean Messiha (far-right guy) created a gofundme for the cop and his family that has already gathered more than 1.5 million euros. A cop kills a child and wins the million.
so is it violent? yes of course it couldn't be otherwise. but violence is sometimes necessary, especially when you have to fight back against cops, their fascist friends and the State that allows them to keep existing. The rioters deserve full support, even if the criticism of some of their actions should exist. The danger is for this criticism to overcome our support. It shouldn't. Because if they are alone like they were in 2005, the right and the far-right will take advantage of the situation. Last time Sarkozy was elected and the risk is greater this time, with Les Républicains (the republicans) being basically dead and leaving their spot to Marine Le Pen's fascist party Rassemblement National (national gathering).
so if you're french, don't let the people around you talk shit about the situation. and if you're not, be careful still, fascism is rising and they're not as scared as they were 20 years ago.

What a Party
Tumblr media
A happy (and long) one shot ! .... based on real events lol
I needed to write some happy stuff, especially considering the overall mess happening in France right now (you know, riots, overall strikes, arrogant politicians voicing their hate on common folk...) :')
I tried my best to make it short, but there were too many things to be said ! There's a part filled with some "I love you" quotes. Please excuse my mistakes, you already know about my very peculiar writing schedule... and my weird English, lol
Tumblr media
Arthur Morgan x GenderNeutralReader
Word count : 3.5k
Short summary : Let’s be honest : you’re drunk. And Arthur, being a little less drunk than you during Sean’s return party, really hopes he can tell you how much he loves you tonight.
A/Note : Arthur’s tent has got some flaps !
Tags : chapter 2, soft, alcohol, you’re drunk, Arthur’s drunk, Sean’s return party, Arthur loves you, the ground is moving, soft, nausea, cigarette, drunk behaviour, Hosea being a dad, ring dang doo
Tumblr media
"Got a hole in the middle, and it's split in two !"
You kept singing along with the rest of the gang, holding your whiskey bottle in your right hand and a cigarette in the other. You could not recall how many bottles you already had the opportunity to gulp down, being dragged by Sean into a drinking contest. You knew about your upcoming fate, so did he. You were supposed to be on guard duty by sunrise, which was going to be complicated considering the amount of alcohol your body had to evacuate overnight.
"And that's what ya call the ring dang doo !"
You could easily recall that the gang was not often in such a great mood. You had been a member of the Van Der Linde gang for about a decade, having been around since your mid-teens after Dutch and Hosea had found you struggling with the law following a fight you had with another kid, who happened to be a sheriff’s son. Hosea had used his scamming skills to pretend you were his child and that he had been looking around the area after you ran away following a minor dispute. The sheriff believed that story well enough, and this event marked your official induction into the gang.
In ten years, you had seen the gang’s ups and downs. You had witnessed Arthur grieving his son, Bessie Matthews’ passing, the arrival and death of new members, the birth of the very first gang’s child, John’s departure and return a little less than a year later… and you took part to the Blackwater incident. Arthur had begged Dutch not to let you participate to it, wanting to take your place instead, believing things were not going to go according to his plan. Indeed, Morgan was right, and you left Blackwater with numerous wounds on your arms and a rather tiny hole on your calf after being shot multiple times.
You and Arthur were close, very close. Ever since a few months, to say the least. Anyone could easily tell he had a soft spot for you prior the Blackwater ferry heist, even you could notice how different he was when you were around. Arthur was good at hiding his feelings behind a rather stern and grumpy face, often looking away whenever your eyes would meet his, turning shades darker each time he would be greeted with a smile. Neither you nor him had ever made a first move towards the other, which was frustrating to the eyes of the girls who openly voiced their discontent.
"These two are made for each other and won’t even talk !" Karen often sighed
"Isn’t that romantic ? Two souls, so in love… yet unable to communicate !" Mary-Beth would smile
"It ain’t romantic, it’s stupid."
And despite not openly voicing your feelings, Arthur was very good at making you feel adored. Your tent was right next to his, he would often bring you some coffee in the morning, share a meal with you, discuss about arts, landscapes and plants before moving forward. Such a brawny and menacing-looking man talking about the beauty of some flowers never ceased to surprise you ! As Hosea would often say : Arthur was not as dumb as he looked, hiding a high intelligence, often being taken for an idiot by many people. His low self-esteem was the main reason why he never openly showed how smart he was, and how much he cared about you. He was too shy and not confident enough to move forwards, but could easily talk about everything he liked with you without having the feeling of being looked down as a random intimidating outlaw with no brains.
He had awkwardly brought you a bouquet one day after collecting a few flowers nearby, hiding it behind his back while his face was as red as a tomato, stuttering a few words you could barely understand due to his heavy Southern accent and low voice. After he gave you that bouquet, Arthur proceeded retrieving to his tent and hide his red face behind his hands while you kept his gift in a vase near your cot, humming the scent of these flowers for days while the girls had clapped his move.
"One big step forward !" Tilly had exclaimed
That night, everything was possible, every door was opened for you to make a first move towards Arthur. You were drunk, laughing, dancing, displaying a rather eccentric side to the rest of the gang which had undoubtedly caught Morgan’s eye as he had stopped drinking his beer while sitting at the table with Bill and John to look at you. He watched Uncle wrap his arm around your shoulders as you sang with him louder and louder, believing you would loose your voice at some point. But you kept singing, not even bothering about what was going on around you, enjoying the moment as you somewhat believed it would not last long enough.
Hosea had tried dissuading you from drinking so much, using his fatherly tone to refrain you… but you did not care about his warnings. You were aware of the consequences of your sudden desire to drink this much, knowing about your upcoming state early in the morning when you would have to patrol around the hideout with your riffle while enduring a rather heavy headache and an endless nausea. It was not your first time being drunk and certainly not be the last. Sean was back ! How many drinking contests you were about to have together ! Hosea was already excepting the worst to happen to you, knowing that being drunk was quick to make you unleash your child-self, and nobody wanted to have two children doing a drinking contest.
"Easy, Y/N !" he sighed, looking at you gulping down your whiskey. "Leave some for the rest of us !"
"Don't worry, old man !" you smiled.
Dutch had switched his gramophone on, you spotted him dancing with Molly while Arthur danced with Mary-Beth, chuckling a little, glancing at you whenever he had the chance. He could easily tell that making you stand up would not be an excellent idea, watching you gulp down another beer after cheering with Karen who sang on Sean’s lap. Arthur’s vision was getting a little blurry with time, he also had drank too much. A little less than you did, but enough for him to have some serious issues walking straight from a tent to another. Mary-Beth left him to get a drink with Tilly, Arthur approached you and smiled.
"Ain’t that a nice nighty night !" he exclaimed, placing his large hands on your shoulders
"Damn, Morgan’s already drunk !" Uncle exclaimed
"Nah, I ain’t drunk !"
"Yes you are !"
"I ain’t drunk, you old fool !"
Your vision was so blurry, you would loose balance even while sitting down ! Your hand instinctively reached his, causing Karen to clap her hands and Pearson to smile. Neither you nor Arthur would have done something like this being sober !
"Alright, maybe a lil’ tipsy." Arthur laughed
"Good lord..." Hosea sighed, leaving his seat
On occasions, you would only touch each other when you were stitching up your wounds. One day, your hand had accidentally brushed Arthur’s, which caused him to awkwardly smile and stay petrified for a minute before hiding in his tent. He had wrote a three pages long journal entry, expressing how sweet the tip of your fingers felt on his skin, how unexpected it was, and how much he would have wanted to catch your hand at that time, but was too shy to try it. A third of Arthur’s journal was filled with entries about you… and you would probably never get to read them as he always kept his sketchbook to close.
"Well, ain’t that a great move !" Karen exclaimed
"We’re literally doing nothin’." Arthur grumbled while unconsciously massaging your shoulders as you let out a loud moan escape your lips
"No, you really ain’t !" John shouted from the poker table
"We ain’t doing nothin’ !" you answered. "We ain’t !… Keep goin’, Arthur…"
"Sure thing, Y/N."
The sound of Javier’s guitar mixed with Dutch’s gramophone and the gang singing old ballads created a very peculiar symphony you enjoyed, singing to yourself while looking up and down, still holding onto Arthur’s hand. You could hear him sing above your head, mumbling a few words whenever the lyrics were unknown to him. You laughed so often, nearly crying at Sean’s jokes, unable to keep breathing at times. This moment was a fine one, especially knowing that Arthur was standing behind you.
At some point, Morgan helped you up to make you walk a little around camp, feeling the need to take you away from the others. Despite being drunk himself, Arthur still appeared to be self-conscious and was aware of the surroundings, knowing that not everyone was going to celebrate Sean’s return, that some of you were on guard duty and others, like little Jack and Abigail, for instance, were already asleep. While you were singing and, unfortunately, ended up throwing up a few feet away from Kieran’s sleeping spot, Arthur would be looking around, gently patting your back. The worst was probably the fact that you regretted nothing.
"You’re alright there ?" he chuckled
"Nah, I ain’t alright !"
"You’ll be alright, then !"
You sighed at Arthur’s sarcastic answer. It took you a few seconds to calm yourself down and stand up again, Arthur firmly held you by the shoulders in order to keep you on your feet. Your balance was weak, and Morgan’s one was certainly not any better as you would zigzag while making your way back to camp after straying away. Your common drunkenness did not make you notice that Dutch was supervising the two of you from his tent and had dragged Hosea into this rather peculiar activity. They kept judging Arthur’s overall behaviour, finding it a little too childish, especially knowing who Arthur was and what his tasks usually were. Collecting debts, robbing shops and banks, sometimes beating people up… the list was longer than that, indeed.
"Remind me how old Arthur is, Hosea…" Dutch muttered, smoking his cigar
"Thirty-six." Hosea sighed. "Our boy’s thirty-six."
They watched you making your way back to the poker table to join John and Bill who were probably as drunk as you were. You could not sit down, clinging onto Arthur’s shirt as he calmly tried pushing you to one of the barrels for you to rest your legs a little. Morgan’s vision was a little less blurry than yours, and your wellbeing had to be put before his. He was aware of how drunk the two of you were and was not going to miss the opportunity to openly show his love to you !
"Nah, can’t sit down !" you said, looking at the ground who was literally moving like a river. "The ground’s movin’ !"
"The ground’s movin’ ?" Arthur chuckled, suddenly looking down. "Holly shit, John, Bill !"
"What ?" John wheezed, tilting his head
"You ain’t gonna believe it, but the ground’s movin’ !"
"Movin’ ?" Bill’s eyes widened. "You sure ?"
While looking down, Bill fell from his seat and bursted out laughing, unable to get up anymore. Hosea grumbled as Arthur grabbed you by the waist in order to lead you to the domino table for you to get some quiet… but your destination was quite unsure. The two of you kept tripping, you laughed loudly enough. Wild animals were probably running away from your location at the moment. As you passed by Jack and Abigail’s tent, Arthur grabbed your arm and rubbed it, chuckling like a mischievous child, placing his finger before his smiling mouth.
"Shhhhhhh !"
"Aye ! Shhhhhhh !" you responded, mimicking him
Arthur grabbed your hand as you tiptoed towards the back of Pearson’s wagon, grabbing a beer and drinking it together before leading you to the domino table on which you decided to sit, kicking your legs back and forth. Arthur moved a little forward, placing his hands on your thighs. Despite your blurry vision, you could easily tell Arthur was giving you his absolutely adorable puppy look, along with a charming smile. He was certainly about to ask you something… or was going to faint due to his overall state of drunkenness.  His face said it all.
"Hey, Y/N." he sheepishly said
"Yeah ?"
"Can… can I steal a kiss...?"
"Been waiting for that for so long ! Sure you c…-"
You had no time to finish your sentence, Arthur bent and dropped a sweet but quick kiss on your lips, stepping back a little. He had done it ! He had finally moved forward and kissed you ! What an exploit for such a shy and not confident man ! Arthur felt butterflies flying in his belly, he was turning shades darker just by looking at you. You were so amazing, so gorgeous, so sweet ! He wanted to cup your adorable face in his hands and cover it with kisses, but his rational side was still in control and forbid him making another step forward.
"Wait." you whimpered, somewhat unhappy about such a short kiss
You did not allow him to step further away, forcing him to bend one more time by holding him by the collar. You were seeing him twice, unable to understand where you had to look in order to return his kiss. Your heart was melting, and in no way could you just stay here doing nothing ! You had waited for so long for Arthur to make such a huge step forward and, despite the condition you both were in, drunk but somewhat conscious about your actions, you were not able to let go of him. You did, however, notice that Sean and Karen were standing somewhere near you.
"I love you…" Arthur desperately mumbled, feeling a sudden freedom invade him. "I love you ! I love you !"
"So do I, Arthur…! I love you too ! So much, so bloody much !"
"I love you ! I love you ! And I’ll repeat it ’til the end ‘cause tomorrow I’ll be shy again ! I love you !"
"Oh my god, this is happening !" Tilly cheered. "Mary-Beth ! Mary-Beth ! They’re saying they love each other !"
"No way !" Mary-Beth answered, clapping her hands
At this moment, what was surrounding the two of you did not matter anymore. You had completely forgotten about the fact that you were being watched and closed your eyes. Arthur moved forwards, leading you to an incredibly passionate kiss you wanted to be endless. You were perfectly conscious about what you were doing, and were proud. Happy, and proud. You could feel Arthur’s hands move behind your back, your legs spread wide for his body to touch yours. Even Sean had stopped courting Karen for a moment to witness such a peculiar event ! You and Arthur were kissing each other !
Your bodies fused into one being, one entity. So warm, so beautiful, so sweet… something good could come out of the two of you, something amazing. Mary-Beth was right, the two of you were soulmates. You deserved each other. Your kiss was so intense, so exciting that you almost forgot about all these people watching you. Things escalated quickly as Arthur pushed you on the table to lean above you, causing Hosea to run towards your direction and separate the two of you before Arthur or yourself would start stripping down due to the overall excitement this single kiss had triggered.
"Easy there, fellers !" Hosea said, helping you standing up. "Do I need to remind you where you are ?"
"No." Arthur shook his head, holding himself onto the table. "Sorry, ‘Sea."
"You two should get some sleep. It’s getting late and Y/N’s on guard duty in the morning."
"Can I sleep with Arthur then ?" you asked with a rather childish tone
"What ?"
Arthur turned his head to you with a large smile while Hosea remained a little surprised at your sudden request. Being drunk made you loose your actual adult filter, words escaped your mouth without you being able to control them. Indeed, you never needed anyone’s approval, especially not for something as casual as sleeping in someone’s tent ! You had done this a numerous amount of times with John without even asking Dutch, but felt the need to inform Hosea about your current desire not to finish this night alone.
"Sorry, Y/N." Hosea chuckled, gently patting your shoulder. "Why do you ask ? You’re a grown adult, you don’t need my approval for that."
"Let’s take it as a yes, then." Arthur smiled. "I’ll go get the bed ready !"
"It ain’t wise. Really ain’t."
Noticing the three of you talking, Dutch came closer to you to cut out a potential argument. Hosea was shaking his head, not wanting the two of you to sleep in the same tent because of the overall noise you would potentially cause. Hosea had always been quite protective towards you, being genuinely attached to your overall personality and sweet behaviour which often led him to feel the need to watch over you, especially when things were not going well… or when you were drunk.
"Dutch !" Arthur said with the exact same childish tone you used. "Can Y/N sleep in my tent ? Hosea says it ain’t wise."
"Why the hell are you asking that ?" Dutch laughed, not hiding his surprise. "Of course they can !"
"Dutch, I don’t think that’s reasonable…" Hosea sighed, covering his face with his palm. "Y/N’s on guard duty in the morning. They’re drunk and might end up throwing up on each other all night long."
"Let those kids be, Old Girl."
Hosea rolled eyes and sighed. Leaving two drunk fools sleep in the same tent that night was probably not wise, but what could he say ? Arthur held your hand and led you to his tent, carefully closing its flaps after placing a few empty buckets underneath his bed in case of an emergency. Arthur took off your boots and suspenders, proceeding to do the same before laying down with you. there was no much space for the two of you to properly fit in, so Arthur held you close to him while you buried your head into the crook of his neck. His breath was calming, especially considering the fact that Karen and Sean were actually having fun in John’s tent at the moment. What a party !
Surprisingly enough, your night was rather quiet. You woke up with a heavy headache, calmly looking down at Arthur who was sleeping like a log. However, as soon as sensed you were no longer in bed with him, he whined and stretched a little, opening his eyes to look at you. His eyelids were heavy enough for him to grumble as he could see you struggle putting on boots on, blinded by the only ray of sunlight which passed between the tent’s flaps. Arthur rolled over a little on his cot and reached out to your hand, leading you to blush and sit near him.
"‘Bout yesterday…" you sheepishly mumbled. "I… well I…"
"I love you, Y/N… I didn’t forget anythin’… I didn’t… and I still love you…"
"I love you too. Now, get back to sleep."
You were so thankful to be able to remember what had happened last night ! Arthur smiled a little, your free hand caressed his cheek. You dropped a soft kiss on his forehead as soon as you noticed he was drifting back into sleep. You wanted to join him, burry yourself into his embrace, roll into his blanket and remain with him all day long ! You analysed Arthur’s chiseled cheekbones, his sleepy smile, his little scars, his beard. You envied his eyelashes, so long and furnished. His beautiful green orbs were moving underneath his eyelids, he was already dreaming !
"Y/N !" Javier shouted from the outside. "We’re on guard duty, come on !"
You sighed, dropping another kiss on Arthur’s forehead while replacing the blanket above his shoulders, looking at him nuzzling his head against his pillow while whining a little. How sweet he was, how angelic he looked ! You left his tent and headed to the entrance of Horseshoe Overlook, rubbing your head a numerous amount of times, struggling not to fall asleep for hours until Sean came to replace you, instructing you to drink some whiskey to calm your heavy migraine. You and Arthur often met while taking care of camp chores, smiling at each other despite your overall pain. Both of you had strong headaches almost incapacitating you, but you kept moving. What a night you had ! When the sun went down, instead of heading inside your tent, Arthur dragged you to his one again… and you could not say no.
It had taken him a few drinks to finally move forwards and tell you how much he loved you. He was not going to let go, and neither would you. What a party you had ! Your feelings were blooming, burning you from in inside, despite your increasing exhaustion. You nuzzled against Arthur’s chest after the sun went down, recalling the events of the other night with a large smile. These numerous drinks had helped you moving forward, you would not be resting into his embrace otherwise.
Oh, what a party it was, indeed.

"Petty" for the wip game
This fic is actually complete. Short but thorough. I have a friend who really liked his Maria with my Matt, and this was his Christmas present one year, so it's old and kinda cringeworthy and kind of smutty, and I don't really stand by it anymore, but it's kind of nice, I think.
Vancouver, 1995
“I never noticed you don't own a rosary,” Maria asked him one morning. She lay in a beam of buttery yellow sunlight, and he thought of technicolour marigold altars. A riot of colours he wanted to paint her body in, maybe outlined in a bright, crystalline, sugar-skull white of the sheets. She is gold, in her real sunshine. “Or even keep one on the wall.”
“I'm not that Catholic.” He shrugged.
“Sure you are, tabernako,” The pads of her fingers rested on his thigh for a long moment. He thought she might want to go again, that the seven orgasms weren't enough, but she tapped him thoughtfully instead. His profanity was Catholic, sure. But he didn't know how to say that. It didn't mean he believed in much.
“I think the first thing I can remember my father giving me is a rosary,” She said. “White ivory and gold. It's in a museum now, in the capital.”
“It sounds beautiful.” He replied lightly.
“Antonio's a piece of shit, but he has good taste,” Mari stretched, her entire body arching in a way that made him itch to paint. “At least the Catholics have an aesthetic.”
“I think I've got a higher rate of protestants than you, though.” Matthew pointed out. “I'm not so Catholic anymore.”
Mari laughed like the porcelain bells that he often saw on the porches of her neighbours. “You apologized when I only came six times. If that's not Catholic guilt I don't know what is.”
He snorted and shrugged again. “Just making up for what you spend on dairy when I come over.”
“You do consume more crema than anyone I've ever met. Even for a white boy.” She pondered this a moment. “Mostly white boy. Whatever. So you don't have them? Or you've never had them. The worry beads, I mean.”
“I have one.” He said, standing and opening the old trunk at the end of the bed to take it out from where it still lay. Father had never approved of it. Black and wooden and plain, he'd carved it from Scottish oak scraps while stuck in bed after the handover.
“It's pretty.” She said. It wasn't, and they both knew it, but he thanked her anyway.
“Monsieur Bonnefoy gave me one when I was born.” He said. “Black stone beads. It had his bulla in the center. Rome gave it to him, I guess. It was set under a plate with the virgin stamped in iron to attach it. To keep me safe.”
“Thoughtful of him.” She said dryly. "Strange how they're always squabbling over the sons of Rome."
He flushed, thinking of France's invasion in the 1860s. “Sorry.”
“What happened to it?” She said, batting his apology away with a wave of her hand. She rolled onto her back, her hair a cloud of wildfire smoke around her golden face, and he pillowed her head in his thigh and leaned against the headboard, playing with her hair. She liked that, she'd said once because he didn't mess with the pattern of her curls. “In a museum in Ottawa?”
“No,” Matt said. “He took it back. It was in their agreement, his and Father's. Monsieur Bonnefoy took his name and his protection back. Property too, but his politicians had already taken that back when they fled anyway. So my rosary and a few little odds and ends went back in a box. I had a set of apostles spoons from Uncle Alasdair he took back too, even though my uncle was my godfather.”
“That's petty.”
“That's Monsieur Bonnefoy for you.” Matt shrugged.
“I suppose at least you're not still paying him for the privilege of being colonized.” She said.
“Did your father take anything back?”
“You mean besides the pile of silver he dug out of me?” She raised a brow.
“Ah,” Matt said, feeling guilty all of a sudden. Maybe he was Catholic. “I just kept Elizabeth on the money and Dad's content.”
“Aren't you a lucky one,” She teased. “Now, why don't you get back down there and make your brother jealous all the way from Japan.”
“Well,” Matthew grinned, his angsty bullshit mood gone in a moment. Her thigh was warm when he kissed it. “He did say we had to get to know each other.”
“I'd—” She gasped. “I'd say we're getting…” The little intake of breath she made was better than praise. “To know each other.”
Send me a word, if it’s in one of my wip documents I’ll answer your ask with the sentence that it appears in

I've had this comic for a long time and haven't posted much about it because I've never had a chance to do that before, soo let's talk about it!
This is a French Comic by Daniel Bardet, illustrated by Bernard Capo & colored by Arnaud Boutle, published in 2013 by France Loisirs editions (First published in 2010 by Glénat editions)
It's two volumes in one and contains the entire story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love the cat watching Valjean and The Bishop from the window to make sure everything is all right.
Tumblr media
In this comic we have a lot of versions of Javert:
1 - the original Javert
2 - Marius who looks like a younger version of Javert
3 - Enjolras who also looks like Javert but with long blonde hair
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and every soldier looks like Javert too.. this comic is a NIGHTMARE.
Tumblr media
I already cried and finished about those and now it's your turn guys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They try to make it normal but naaaah it's NOT.
because recognizing someone just by their muscles and strength will NEVER be a normal thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idk why the way Valjean holds the doll made me laugh.
Tumblr media
My girl was REALLY needed a doll..
Tumblr media
What I liked most is that all places look so beautiful. Here is the bishop's garden.
Tumblr media
and here Montreuil-sur-Mer looks really lively and wonderful!
Tumblr media
even the convent!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The riot moment is so good too.
Tumblr media
These Les Amis will definitely judge you.
Tumblr media
This Bossuet is 10/10 to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marius is just little meow meow look how he clings to Eponine's arm <3
You can tell by her face how tired she is of him.
Tumblr media
Love this little moment where Courfeyrac bandaged Marius's forehead in the book but here it's Enjolras instead of Courfeyrac but I still like it.
Tumblr media
Yeah…

Last month I clearly posted my wrap-up a day too early because I ended up DNFing a book that same day and therefore starting another. I don't think that'll happen again, but I'm making sure to schedule this for the first just to be sure.
Anyway, this was an all right month of reading—some greats, some simple okays—and a very good month for not acquiring books. Only one ARC came home with me, I offloaded three, and I'm almost certainly not going to buy any books in the last day of the month, but I still have 12 hours. That might change, in which case this post will also and you'll never know what I originally typed. Yeah, that worked well. Darn used bookstores!
You already know how much I liked The Briar Club. My other top reads were A Desolation Called Peace (anyone surprised?), Wandering Stars (outside my wheelhouse but good), and Nicked, which is also out in the summer and was my solo ARC haul of the month. If anyone thinks "gay medieval heist novel" sounds like a good time, they should pick that up. Also, anyone who likes cats and picture books needs to pick up Floof.
And my lows might as well start with my DNF from last month, I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons. I was really hoping it would pick up and I could push through, but it was just the wrong sort of silly for me. (I ended up going home without a book, then binging Most Ardently over the next couple days after my Libby hold came early.)
I also found The Deerfield Massacre to be odd—less rigorous than I'd have liked, a little wobbly on its thesis, doing a poor job of balancing "this must have sucked for the survivors" with Indigenous perspectives and an awareness that the Europeans were, in fact, colonizers. And A Letter to the Luminous Deep sounded so good, but I found it slow and couldn't quite connect to the characters or world.
I don't know how May is going to go, in terms of reading, so this book might end up being my review of the month, but I'm enjoying it so am going to rec it now: Evelina! Frances Burney was one of Austen's favourite authors and I can absolutely see why, and how she influenced her. If you like Austen's novels, you should 110% pick this up, because it's got romantic troubles, a highly embarrassing family, a number of awkward balls and parties, and all manner of drama. Why hasn't this been adapted? It should have been years ago.
Lastly in bookish and/or life news, my store's latest Indie Bookstore Day party was a rousing success and I don't think my legs have recovered yet from all the walking. My ability to socialize almost certainly hasn't. (It's been three days.) Thank goodness for book lovers and my fellow booksellers. Couldn't have done it without all of them.
Click through to see everything I read this month, in the rough order of how glad I was to have read them.

How would the German Brothers, France, England, Russia, and China react to their American s/o (who recently moved countries to move in with them) dealing with extreme homesickness?
German Brothers + Allies with a homesick S/O
(I made this for a S/O from anywhere in the world since America already lives there and he must be included. Everyone loves that greasy bomber jacket blonde lol)
German Brothers:
Germany:
He understands what homesickness feels like. Between the wars from the past, and the meetings for the future he usually upholds, he is rarely at his nice clean home.
He does his best to console them, and buys them stuff from their home country.
One day he was talking with Italy, and was shocked when Italy suggested to just have more meetings in their home country and bring them with when they start to miss it.
He starts to do just that.
Makes extra time to take them to nice resturants or their hometown and to visit as much of their family and friends as possible.
He realizes having them as a traveling companion helped his stress levels so now they're his emotional support S/O!
Now at least when they miss their home, they won't be alone in that.
Prussia:
Man is retired, and LOVES to travel and learn stuff.
Has no problem sneaking his S/O away to their country.
Movie nights with subtitles will happen frequently. He's not even paying attention he's just so happy his Jewel is happy.
Also cooks a lot of food from their homelands as well as gifts and tacky tourist gages just to make them smile.
Allies:
America:
Doesn't fully understand at first since he couldn't WAIT to break free from England.
Doesn't stop him from bringing his S/O to all the themed resturants in America.
Even has pinned down all the cultural museum spots from their Homeland.
Has an endless knowledge about S/O's heritage of cryptic and ghouls.
Loves seeing them happy and will fly them out, even if he can't go with due to restrictions.
Will help make an album of photos and magazines and newspapers and all that good stuff with them.
Also expect a LOT of imported snacks from their home country as well.
England:
We will pretend he thinks museums don't exist, and that his country doesn't have any major art works.
This will be the ONLY time it's a good thing because now his S/O can ramble off what all the foreign words are.
Laughs when he learns the British museums didn't realize a relic was NOT in fact used to make biscuits.
He won't be able to go with them, but sends a friend of theirs to go with and gives them an allowance to go on a shopping spree and eat at the highest quality of resturants/food markets.
Bring him back a teacup, or pottery piece and he will fight tears over the fact they thought of him just as much as he did of them.
France:
HUGE advocate for getting to travel with his S/O.
Unless there's a riot outside his window he will drop everything to go.
"It would be unfair to give up your life completely just for me, non?"
Showers them with romantic evenings and maybe a get together with friends and family.
France has an amazing wifi connection so he will set up a place to video chat with their friends.
After all even just friends can bring you back home.
Will have random people send postcards so his S/O can make a picture map of their countries best sight seeing places.
Even if he does most the work.
China
He's not too keen on traveling there, and rarely let's his S/O go back
But when they do its not a small trip. We're talking a couple months, or until they had enough.
He will try his best to incorporate foods from the other country and enjoys the process.
He has also shipped out many books and movies to China for them.
Though he will evidently receive chinese rip offs, and gets agitated and apologetic.
He knows it's an issue, they guy is trying his hardest!
Russia
He gets a little sad, thinking they just don't want to be with him.
Even so that in itself is understandable, but decides to go on a trip with them anyway.
Look out if it's a nice and sunny beach like country (or has any beaches regardless)
He will become a very happy sunburnt Russian. Sunscreen? What's that?
His S/O will have to fight with him ti actually go back home because how their home is him new home, da?
Have fun with your summer stays!

first of all you’re such a talented writer i’m like wow omg. second could i get something based off of this prompt- 12. “How long has it been since you ate something?” with austin and a model!reader thats his girlfriend? thank you!
prompt: "how long has it been since you ate something"
summary: austin butler was a part time expert in seeing right through every wall you put up, which you'd come to accept as both a gift and a curse.
content warning: insecurity surrounding weight, disordered eating habits
You popped your head up from your phone when you heard the trailer door open, holding back at the giggle at Austin's appearance walking inside. They'd been filming some sort of concert riot scene for the past few hours, and he looked like he'd been swept up by a tornado- hair all over the place and suit jacket only halfway on.
"Hey stunner," You quipped and he rolled his eyes as he shed the jacket and shoes by the door to drop down next to you, leaning in for a kiss with whispered "Hey baby," against your mouth.
"I feel bad that you're sitting in here all by yourself for so long whenever you visit." He continued when he pulled back and you shrugged, running a hand through his hair. "It's a change of scenery from my living room or the gym, I'll take it."
He flopped back next to you on the couch and picked up his phone, shaking out his hair as he did.
"I was about to send the runners my Door Dash order if you want anything,"
Austin spoke without looking up and you bit the inside of your cheek.
"I'm alright.”
You knew what was coming before he even opened his mouth, this not the first time you'd had this squabble. Except the last few times it had come up you'd come up with a good enough excuse about feeling sick or already having eaten something. It didn't look like he'd buy it this time.
"Really? You didn't eat this morning 'cuz we were running late, it's almost four in the afternoon."
Fighting the urge to roll your eyes, swallowed. "It’s fine, Austin."
"No Y/N, it's not fine. How long has it been since you ate something? Did you get dinner when you were waiting for me to get done last night?"
That question made you recoil, and you felt like he’d flicked on police interrogation lights over your head. It was one thing to say you were fine but it was another to flat out lie, and Austin knew that just as well as you did.
"The Dior show in France in two weeks, my manager is up my ass about his managers being up his ass about sending girls who don't "fit their look"." You mumbled and looked down, mind wandering back to the just a few hours ago when manager in question had called bitching about it so hard you almost cried.
When you looked back up the worry, and touch of anger on your behalf, in Austin's face made you want to look away again but he reached out before you could. Tucking a strand of hair behind your ear, he scooted a little closer.
"I'm not gonna pretend to understand the crap you have to put up with in the whole modeling gig" He started. "But maybe this is a sign that you need to find different representation, after the France show?"
He wasn't wrong on that point, but the amount of legwork it would take gave you a headache just to think about.
"More of a headache than not eating is gonna give you?”
You didn't realize you'd said that out-loud until Austin replied, looking at you more seriously than he had been before.
"I'll look into it." You said and he seemed to take the hint that you were done with the topic, giving a small nod as he picked his phone back up.
You waited a minute before leaning over onto his shoulder to look at his Door Dash screen, relaxing when you felt his arm wrap around your body. "Get me a Subway to eat while I do?"

There are terrible riots taking place in France which have been going on for six nights, and a portion of several days.
The rioters are essentially youth from council estates and working-class neighbourhoods wreaking havoc on public equipment, schools, townhalls, setting buildings and buses, malls and even nearby fields on fire, pillaging hundreds of shops and stores. The pretext is the death of a 17-year-old delinquent who got shot by a policeman at the wheel of a stolen car; the entire Left is irrevocably extatic for this has to be the harbinger of the Revolution.
The ensuing amount of destruction is staggering, to say the least. The most frustrating thing is that the people supposed to rebuild the cities, to pay for every looted item and every crushed car, to make everything liveable again, are the ones who get beaten in the streets when they try to protect their possessions, the same people the Left calls racist for dreading mass immigration, the same ones whose daughters get raped or burnt alive, the ones who can pay but only barely, but shall pay because the hooligans that insult and mock and taunt and threaten and wound them can't and won't pay for anything they've destroyed; yet the Left will whine and clamour about the unfairness of the living conditions of them poor people who must dwell in such ugly accommodations.
Yeah. Marine Le Pen has already won 2027.

People with guns and grenades; protests and riots all over France; and the beautiful city of Paris is burning.
The suicide of Europe continues.
The only consolation is that countries of the Global South are not adding fuel to this fire. Imagine if Syria, Iran, Russia, China, Latin America etc. funded and armed these "freedom fighters" like the West did/does all over the world.

The US is very good at assimilation of immigrants. Europe? Sucks at it.
Europe is in big trouble because it kept accepting migrants and refugees from all the countries that the US bombs or Europe exploits.
But these migrants never become a part of the European society.
In the US, there are strong laws on discrimination. Also, the U.S. is good at promoting talented black and brown people.
On the other hand, look at the parliaments or corporations or media in Europe. It’s pretty much 100% white.
Either don’t accept new people… or accept them and treat them as equals.
Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden and many more in EU are all ticking time bombs, thanks to divided societies.

Macron is using heavily armed tactical units and armored vehicles against civilian protesters. What kind of democratic country would do this? France has become a fascist police state under dictator Macron.

The French riots have spread to Belgium’s capital city of Brussels. 64 individuals have already been arrested.

Bee bus stops first appeared in the Dutch city of Utrecht. Now the UK is planning for more than 1,000 and there is growing interest across Europe and in Canada and Australia.

Dutch cities have managed to stabilise urban bee populations in recent years, a study found last year, following decades of declines, and bee hotels and bee stops were among their solutions. Humble bus shelter roofs are being turned into riots of colour, with the number of miniature gardens – full of pollinator-friendly flora such as wild strawberries, poppies and pansies – set to increase by 50% in the UK by the end of this year. Clear Channel aims to create at least 1,000 bee bus stops in the UK, hopefully more. They are already established in the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, and the company is building them in France and Belgium later this year, with inquiries coming from as far afield as Canada and Australia.

Clear Channel is working with the Wildlife Trusts to maximise the benefit to wildlife. Native flowers such as kidney vetch, thyme, selfheal and wild marjoram have been chosen to attract a range of pollinators including common carder bees, buff-tailed bumblebees, peacock butterflies, small tortoiseshell butterflies and chequered hoverflies. As well as the wildlife benefits, the roofs also absorb rainwater, and make a small contribution to offsetting the urban heat island effect. Yay historical context!
I love this line:
“Every man who has in his soul a secret revolt against any act of the State, of life, or of destiny, borders on riot; and so soon as it appears he begins to quiver and to feel himself lifted by the whirlwind.”
That “secret revolt” isn’t surprising after the July Revolution digression. Most people had a reason to be unsatisfied with the political order on ideology alone, so when compounded by economic troubles and disease, it’s not entirely unexpected (in hindsight, of course) that 1832 was a year of protests.
And yes, Hugo is once again a bit condescending here, but we should keep in mind that rioting is really unpleasant and he's trying to address those who focus on that. It can be violent and scary, and it can very easily have accidental victims – just think of Jean Valjean’s fear of being caught because of the political tensions. In trying to explain and defend the June Rebellion (the protests at Lamarque’s funeral), he has to return to the question raised in the July Revolution digression: what is better, “barbaric civilization” or “civilized barbarism?” He settled on the former in that digression, but in trying to convince his audience, he has to address the discomfort and terror caused by this violence. Acknowledging that there are the “greatest and the most infamous” in a riot is a way of recognizing that aspect while defending them as ultimately “great.” It's uncomfortable to read, but it was likely a useful rhetorical strategy when dealing with the "moderate" section of his audience.
The image of the “moderate” who compromises with a tyrannical peace returns again (here described as “lukewarm”). Some of the specific points raised by that hypothetical – particularly equating those who died young for their beliefs and those who died around middle age for their families – already seem a bit questionable, but that’s also due to Hugo’s power as the narrator here. He’s telling us what this hypothetical bourgeois would say, so he can control how convincing this person is. That people said this is true, but Hugo also gets to make sure this person says everything he wants to explore and possibly refute.
I think “riots” being too broad a term is actually a good move on Hugo’s part, as is the comparison to war. He measures war, for instance, in economic costs just as rioting is, pointing out that if it’s a matter of losses due to the violence, both should be judged together. That some riots (the seizure of the Bastille) are considered better than some wars even while costing more financially is also a good point, highlighting that causes and effects need to be taken into account as well. The War of Spanish Succession mentioned here was about the interests of the Bourbon dynasty, and it was seen as a costly war that drained resources from France and the throne. In the long run, the costs of wars like this one were held against the ancien régime.

Natal Chart Analysis : Chamber
First of all this is headcanon of mine and im not an expert in analyzing birth charts, i only know little about this so i got some help from my acquiantances. I compared his chart qualities with his lore , his personality and his voice lines in this article. The comparison can be irrelevant on some parts because of my lack of knowledge in English. Please respect even if this doesnt meet with your expectations i have put a lot of effort in this. This is hell of a long article. I have written with some a lot of details and i cut it short, otherwise it would be hell of a long article than it already is. I had to think about general species of the zodiac signs and i found Scorpio as the most suitable zodiac sign to him. I went from his release date (16 November) as reference, and for his birth year all i knew was he is between 25-30 years old. So i calculated every year between 1993-1998. As his birthplace (i dont know if RIOT gave this type of information about this) i went with Paris because i have no idea where he can be born in France. In the end i came to the conclusion that his birthdate and birthplace may be : 13 November 1993 07.10 pm Paris/France

THE SUN IN SCORPIO
☽ Scorpios know what they want and won't go out and grab it at the wrong moment. They sit back, watch (quite expertly), and then get it only when the moment is just right. It might seem like patience, but it's more likely their powerful skills at strategy at work. Scorpios aren't afraid of getting their hands (their bodies, their minds) dirty. The darker side of life intrigues them, and they're always ready to investigate.
☽ Physical energy and courage. Strong passions. Regeneration and improvement. Strong sexual powers.
☽ Potential issues: He is suspicious, defiant, extremist; he is sometimes vindictive. ☾ The Frenchman Vincent Fabron lives his life in search of one necessary goal, willing to sacrifice anything that gets in his way of achieving it. He has spent much of his time involved with combat and weapons, having worked for the French military before becoming a PMC marksman and then a weapons designer for Kingdom Defense. His employment at Kingdom was only a stepping stone for him though, as by this point he was already set on his path in pursuit of his sacred truth.
THE SUN IN 6TH HOUSE ☽ The work that they do and the services that they offer are very important to their sense of identity. To feel good about themselves, they need to be busy with daily activities and produce work they can be proud of. They are sensitive to criticism about their work, and they work best when they create their own schedule. ☽ Helpful, concerned, detail-oriented, observant, competent but not hugely ambitious, and sometimes given to fretting. Various minor health issues or concerns, and a strong attachment to his work or routine.
SQUARE BETWEEN SUN AND SATURN ☽ Self-awareness to the point of real self-consciousness is possible with this aspect. Aim to worry far less about always being right or appearing suave and accomplished. When they ease the pressure they put on themselves, they don't face as many brick walls. ☽ Magnetic, intuitive, inventive, unique, and innovative, always seeing where improvements and progress can be made. At his best when he feels free to be themselves--doesn't like to be told what to do. ☾ With a blend of suave nonchalance, professional poise, and smug comedy, Chamber is fully confident with the skill he provides and the value that he offers. He sets high standards for himself and his team, reminding everyone that if they were to secure victories, they might as well go all-out and be the best in what they do.
"None of this "a win is a win" nonsense. We should win big and look good doing it."
THE MOON IN SCORPIO
☽ Lunar Scorpios are diggers in the world of emotion--they can see beyond facades and cut right to a person's core. This ability to "see" what isn't apparent to the rest of the world can be intimidating to others or wildly attractive, depending on the audience. Most have powerful, emotionally intense lives. Some feel like it is beyond their control -- these natives seem to attract emotional upheaval, and their lives appear to consist of plenty of dramatic ups and downs. Doing things halfway or having meaningless relationships simply doesn't fulfill them. Lunar Scorpios want all or nothing.
☽ Moon in Scorpio people often have a strong fear of betrayal. Some will put the people they love through a series of tests, and these are not always conscious. Their apparent suspicion can be trying for the people who love them. ☽ Potential issues: difficulty letting go.
THE MOON IN 6TH HOUSE
☽ They have an emotional need to be useful, work productively, be organized and on top of things, and lead a healthy life. If these matters are chaotic, it's a symptom of emotional unrest. Their observation skills are excellent, and they succeed at whatever they choose to do. They are a valued worker.
☽ They are excellent at finding flaws, quickly seeing details others overlook. A problem-solver, they not only recognize problems, but they are also compelled to fix them. People see they as a great friend, supportive, knowledgeable, insightful, and reliable.
SQUARE BETWEEN THE MOON AND SATURN
☽ When the Moon is in hard aspect to Saturn in the natal chart, natives need to learn to trust others more. Fear keeps them from fully enjoying personal relationships, and fear is behind the occasional rigidity that they express. When they let themselves receive nurture or care from others, an inner voice cautions them that it might not be sincere, long-lasting, or enough! This is essentially a defense mechanism designed to protect themselves from harshness in the world.
☽ Changeable moods, a reserved character, can be stubborn and may lack assurance. ☾ Chamber has shown friendliness with many of the agents in the Protocol, but he is very much aware that he holds many secrets which are better kept hidden. It's revealed much of Chamber's history is swathed in a veil of making deals and withholding the truth from those around him on multiple occasions.
SEXTILE BETWEEN THE MOON AND URANUS
☽ Their life is out-of-the-ordinary, with lots of changes and a great knowledge of the world not necessarily through reading but through personal experience and brilliant intuition. They like the sensational, new things. They act instinctively, but fortunately has a good sixth sense. They like to be surrounded by original people, artists.
SEXTILE BETWEEN THE MOON AND NEPTUNE
☽ Kind and sympathetic, with a strongly compassionate nature. When in love, they are usually very devoted. In fact, they are devoted by nature, not only in matters of the heart. Thank you for reading all these. I know its long but i tried my best to create the chart, analyze and compare with Chamber's characteristics. There might be some/a lot of information on the chart that doesnt fit him, but its hard to make a whole chart fit to defined character (since all the calculations are already hard to find to fit his personality).
Again, thanks for reading. I hope it does fit him like i calculated on natal chart.

“King Charles is not a housing association for distant relatives”
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/king-charles-plan-slimmed-down-monarchy-frogmore-cottage-harry-meghan-b1069700.html
And so it begins…the changes to course correct a bloated operation. Ready for the KC3 haters who were calling him weak the other day to start calling him cruel 🍿
The news came as the King’s visit to France was delayed after extensive rioting on Thursday night. Senior figures have told the Standard that after the period of transition following the coronation, the King, assisted by Queen Camilla, will move to tackle inefficiencies in what is being viewed as a largely overstaffed and outdated system.
Vice-Admiral Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt, Master of the Household, and the Keeper of the Privy Purse Sir Michael Stevens, responsible for finance, will execute the shake-up of what is described as a “top-heavy royal household”. Camilla has been overseeing the fine detail of the King’s plan to ensure that after the coronation the royal household will be run the “Clarence House way”.
One senior figure said: “It is not about cuts, it is about getting the best value for money from those on the payroll. Sometimes less is more.”
Another source added: “The King is not some sort of housing association for distant relatives.” Harry and Meghan were given use of Frogmore Cottage, a five-bedroom mansion on the Windsor estate in 2018, by the late Queen.
[...]
However, the couple’s loss of the cottage, their only British home, is said to be just the “tip of the iceberg”.
It is understood Charles is keen to reduce the number of royals with a financial dependence on the crown, especially if they do not have an active role to play. He wants funds from the Duchy of Lancaster, the portfolio of land, property and assets held in trust for the King, and the sovereign grant that covers the cost of royal travel on official engagements, to be spent more effectively. He also wants to pay his staff competitive salaries and pensions so that he gets the best people for the jobs.
“There will be staff cutbacks. That has already started. The buzz phrase is ‘value for money,’” said the source.
Several members of the extended royal family have enjoyed subsidised palace accommodation, with some having apartments that are being used by their children as “London pads”.
The source said: “Over time, that is going to change. Properties will be let at commercial rates going forward and to people outside the family. Where it is in a palace environment they will of course be security vetted.”
Privately, the King’s senior staff have made it clear to members of the extended family that if they cannot afford where they are living, they should “cut their cloth”. “A lot of practices that have evolved during the last reign will be changing. The King is not heartless or reckless, but if the family members are not part of the core family and not working for the crown, it is fair for them to house themselves and fund themselves,” a senior figure said.
[...]
One insider said: “The staffing has been on the top-heavy side. That has built up over time, with advisers to advisers and so on. That’s all going to stop. The boss wants effective people in effective positions doing effective jobs being paid appropriately.” The senior source added: “Much of what was in place doesn’t make economic sense and will be changed during the new reign.”
Yup. This is about what I expected.
People forget that Charles turned the Duchy of Cornwall into the behemoth it is now. It was struggling and in debt when he took it over from his mother.
