Ok, yeah, so I think I'm autistic, and through studying up on autism traits, I've started looking at the world around me very differently. Which in turn, led me to reevaluate why I like my favorite characters, and so here's a list of my favorite characters that I believe are autistic, and why. This is just my interpretation, and my headcanons, so please don't assume I'm trying to state this as unassailable fact.

ps. I'll totally do an ADHD version of this next.

1 - My precious bean, Thomas Jopson - The Terror AMC

I mean, just look at him. He's so well organized and dedicated to his job. He's riddled with childhood trauma, and this results in him doubling down and trying really really hard to keep history from repeating itself (losing a parental figure or someone deeply important to him to illness and death). He only really makes eye contact comfortably with Crozier, and he's very single minded. Being a steward is his special interest, and he is EXTREMELY INTO IT. He's uncomfortable talking about himself, and once his order and routines are taken away, he pretty much goes off the deep end. My poor bean. Very autistic.

2 - Gilbert Norrell - Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Probably the most cut and dry example of an autistic character in entertainment media history. He loathes socializing, hates parties, and just wants to be left alone with his books and his magic (his special interests). He's also ace, so he finds most human beings, with their obsession with sex, and their need to gather and talk loudly together, completely incomprehensible. He's always felt like an alien, and a loner, and struggles to make social connections. When he does, he hangs onto them (namely Childermass). My grumpy, socially inept baby. Ily Gilly, and now I know why I identify so strongly with you.

3 - Sherlock Holmes - All Media Types (but for the purposes of this post, I'll focus on BBC Sherlock).

I almost don't have to say anything else. The whole fandom knows this bad boy is neurodivergent. He's got insane sensory issues, will disappear into his special interests (criminology and deduction) until he literally keels over from lack of food and sleep. He's socially inept, blunt, uncomfortable with touch, and doesn't like anyone but Mrs. Hudson, John, and Detective Inspector Gary Lestrade. He's probably a virgin, and could be ace, depending on how you see him, but as I've written a lot of Johnlock smut, I don't see him that way all the time. He's incredibly intelligent, and knows a lot about the world, but with strange gaps in his knowledge that can only be explained by not at all being able to drag his focus away from his special interests to learn things like basic astronomy, or what to say to people at a party.

4 - Tintin - The Adventures Of Tintin

This boy is very autistic to me. I'm not honestly sure why I feel this about Tintin. Based on the 2011 movie, which I'm the most familiar with, he seems both driven, goal oriented, and socially naive. He stumbles into danger by not reading the situation, and he lives alone with his dog. His best friend is a hyperactive-type ADHD alcoholic, and he strikes me as queer and autistic. If you feel the same way, let me know what you think.

5 - Fitzwilliam Darcey - Pride and Prejudice

I saw this hc in a recent youtube video by Yo Samdy Sam, and I cannot unsee it. Look at this autistic boy. He's grumpy, anti-social, and really into reading, but he also cares deeply about his loved ones, and strives to do what's morally right. He is so socially unaware, that he can't understand why Elizabeth would have rejected his proposal, even though he just totally ripped on her whole family. To be fair, Elizabeth's family are an autistic person's nightmare. All the wild cackling and gossiping, and obsession with who's marrying whom. Four sisters in law, two of whom are inordinately obsessed with ribbons and giggling, and only one of which is also autistic (*cough*Mary*cough*)

6. Bunty Windermere - Father Brown

She has zero filter, and often does not understand why the things she says are hurtful or inappropriate. She's obsessed with fashion, and she's got a keen mind. She could sit around in some posh mansion somewhere, but she chooses to spend all her time with an old priest, and a grumpy church lady, solving crimes and putting herself in danger. She likes fast cars, (and can get under the hood to fix them too) handsome men, and really cute handbags, but is also perpetually single. She doesn't fit in in the world of cocktail parties and society events that surround her, because she's just too blunt, and bucks convention by being independent, unmarried, and slutty).

8. I know this is turning out to be a list of grumpy introverts, and I don't want it to seem like that's all there is to autism, but JUST LOOK AT THIS AUTISTIC BOY - Hermann Gottlieb - Pacific Rim

Hermann is pretty classically autistic. Obsessed with math and numbers. Needs order to feel safe. Is very frustrated with other people's messy, inexact opinions. He only really warms up and comes out of his shell when he falls head over heels for his ADHD-as-fuck cannon boyfriend Newton Geiszler.

9. Last but not least (for this list anyway) DI Richard Poole - Death In Paradise.

Another clear cut case. Tons of sensory issues to light, heat and crowds. Everything must be in its own special place. He's rumored to have never had a girlfriend, and can't understand people's obsession with frivolous things like friendly greetings, small talk, or anything that's not crime solving. He falls madly in love with Camille Bordey, and pretty much flubs any chance he has with her, before dying because he's bad at facial recognition. I love you so much Richard. Never change.

Again, just my opinions. This is helping me figure out my own internal world. There are definitely more than one way to read these characters, but to me, they feel autistic.

The Primer of Claude of France (c. 1505) — Fitzwilliam Museum (MS 159)

The Primer of Claude of France was the first book owned by the French princess Claude of France, eldest daughter of Louis XII of France and Anne of Brittany. Commissioned by Anne for Claude, it is a rare surviving example of a manuscript designed for a medieval child.

The book measures 26 cm by 17.5 cm, and its 14 pages contain the text of the Book of Hours shortened and simplified as an elementary reading book (primer), along with two full-page miniature paintings — the first showing Claude kneeling before her patron saint Claudius of Besançon, with Saint Anne and the Virgin Mary in the right background; the second showing St Claudius presenting Claude to Saint Anne and the Virgin Mary — and 37 smaller miniatures.

The “loose brushwork and relatively pale palette” and use of gilded frames of gothic architecture are typical of the Master of Antoine de Roche, who is tentatively identified with Guido Mazzoni of Modena (d. 1518).

AU Thursday: Tell Me Where To Find Shelter -- Layers of Victor

Saw this meme going around the #fallout4 tag a while back (I believe I specifically ganked it from @radbeetle), and thought it might be fun to do for my Sole Survivor!Victor. And my Malkavian!Alice, but let’s start with SS!Victor. XD

LAYER ONE: THE OUTSIDE

- Name: Victor Fitzwilliam Van Dort

- Eye Color: Very dark brown – it can be very hard to tell the difference between pupil and iris!

- Hair Style/Color: Black, generally combed back with two "tufts" of bangs falling over what little forehead he has

- Height: Six feet three inches (and thin as a rail)

- Clothing style: Relatively formal pre-War – he grew up in a household that impressed upon him that you wore ties and suits whenever you were in public, and often even in private. Post-War, he spends a lot of time switching between a pair of upgraded Vault suits from Vault 111 while looking for clothes that actually fit his lanky frame. He's a lot more casual in his style once he does – though he still likes a good sweater vest, and he keeps a few suits if he needs to look fancy.

- Best physical feature: Victor would personally say his hands – he's a pianist and a tinkerer, and he appreciates his long reach over a keyboard, along with his ability to finely handle delicate parts when upgrading or repairing things!

LAYER TWO: THE INSIDE

- Fears: Total darkness (as in you can't see ANYTHING – as long as there's some sort of light source, he can manage); blindness (related to previous); small enclosed spaces (being locked in a cryonic pod will do that to a guy); losing those he cares about again (he – has a lot of trauma from seeing Victoria shot, Shaun kidnapped, then trying to open Emily's pod after he finally got out, only to see her corpse half-rotted inside)

- Guilty pleasure: Pre-War, it would have been comics – he was always a little embarrassed about how much he continued to like the adventures of Grognak and the Unstoppables and whatnot after his teenage years (not helped by his mother sneering at the stories). Post-War, though, he ditches the "guilty" part – especially after meeting Kent Connolly and getting to play Silver Shroud. XD I'm not sure he has one post-War – he occasionally feels weird about how much he enjoys modifying his weapons and armor? But that's quite practical as well as pleasurable, so. . .

- Biggest pet peeve: Being rapidly promoted in organizations that he's only just joined (Preston, you're easily one of his best friends, but SERIOUSLY, dude, GENERAL?)

- Ambitions for the future: To continue keeping his little portion of the Commonwealth safe, and start training up someone with some more Charisma to be the General of the Minutemen once he retires (he's still not sure why people follow him when he's so socially awkward)

LAYER THREE: THOUGHTS

- First thoughts waking up: Depends on what wakes him up. If he's waking up on his own, it's generally a variation on "Breakfast? Where breakfast?" If someone else wakes him up, it's generally "Why are you shaking/licking me, I don't wanna get up yet." And if it's combat nearby, it's generally "SHIT WHERE'S MY GUN oh wait are they shooting at me still should find gun."

- What they think about most: All his various responsibilities – finding his son, acting as General of the Minutemen, working with the Railroad, helping the people on the settlements, wondering what the hell is going to happen between him and the Brotherhood of Steel, or him and the Institute. . .it doesn't do much for his anxiety, is what I'm saying.

- What they think about before bed: If he's not exhausted enough just to collapse onto the nearest sleeping surface, then probably what I mentioned above. He's probably up late trying to plan routes to help settlements that have called for assistance and follow leads on the Institute and whatnot.

- What they think their best quality is: Victor would consider it his willingness to be helpful whenever possible. He generally enjoys helping people, and it makes him feel better in general to help improve the Commonwealth in some small way. (Not to mention, him helping out personally with the problems of a lot of the families/communities in the Commonwealth has earned him a lot of friends for his Minutemen! A General so hands-on seems to impress people.)

LAYER FOUR: WHAT’S BETTER?

- Single or group dates: . . .this gets a little harder to answer when he was in a polyamorous relationship pre-War, you know. XD But yeah, Victor prefers one-on-one, or one-on-two in the case of Victoria and Emily. A group date puts the pressure on him to perform like the perfect boyfriend/husband, and he doesn't need the extra stress. Maybe he'd be okay with a double date if it was with some very close friends.

- To be loved or respected: Victor would rather be loved, or at least liked – though part of that is low self-esteem telling him people aren't going to respect him. (Or like him, for that matter.) It's what informs his desire to help people, at least in part.

- Beauty or brains: While Victor isn't immune to a nice face or body, he really likes having someone he can talk to about stuff. Sharing interests is fun, and he appreciates someone who will at least try to keep up with his nattering on about butterflies and robots and whatnot.

- Dogs or cats: Dogs! Victor gets along decently with cats, but he is first and foremost a dog person. He had a dog named Scraps when he was a child, and he, Victoria, and Emily were making plans to adopt one before the bombs fell. Meeting Dogmeat at the Red Rocket really helped pull him out of his post-War "almost everything I knew is gone and I'm a stranger in my own state" funk.

LAYER FIVE: DO THEY?

- Lie: Yup. Victor will tell the usual social "white lies" (even if he's not very good at them), and he's done bigger lies in the past – like not telling his parents that Emily was more than their "roommate." (Of course, that was done not to have a family blowout about him and his wife having a girlfriend.)

- Believe in themselves: Not usually – as stated, Victor has pretty low self-esteem, thanks mostly to growing up with a mother who was criticizing him and everything he was when she wasn't absent doing social climbing stuff. It's hard for him to think of himself as being someone who has worth, sadly. He gets better when he starts seeing more results of his actions in helping the Minutemen and the Railroad, and realizes he's genuinely making a difference for people.

- Believe in love: Yes – his relationship with Victoria and Emily was one of the high points of his pre-War life. He was utterly heartbroken when Victoria was shot, and Emily later died due to the life support to the other pods being cut off. But then later he meets Alice, and. . .well, it takes some time, but he manages to come around to loving and being loved again.

- Want someone: Pre-War, not really – he was in a happy threesome and wasn't currently looking to expand. Post-War, most of his life precludes wanting anyone – though he does develop a bit of a crush on Piper as time goes on. And then, of course, he meets Alice, and eventually ends up wanting her. . . (Yes, in-game I intend for him to romance Piper – and there's a chance in the AU he, Piper, and Alice would end up in a poly situation. We'll see where this goes!)

LAYER SIX: EVER?

- Been on stage: Pre-War, never officially – Nell had him play piano at some of her parties (which was always stressful, as he felt all her guests were either judging him or just hated him for being related to her), but that was as far as performing got. He of course had the speech he was asked to do that he was practicing the day the bombs dropped, but – well, the bombs dropped. Post-War – he probably will have to give some inspirational speeches to his Minutemen troops, which he will somehow get through and then go have a little quiet panic attack somewhere.

- Done chems/drugs: . . .I have occasionally toyed with the headcanon that Victor was unwillingly dosed with Psycho, or a drug like it, back in his Army days and has been haunted by the experience ever since. But other than that, not the hard stuff – Victor doesn't even smoke (he tried once – after nearly coughing up a lung, he refused to ever try again) and he tends not to drink (he's tried that too, and discovered he's an embarrassingly chatty drunk, so he doesn't typically indulge). He will, of course, take Rad-X and Rad-Away, because those are freaking necessary to survive in parts of the Wasteland.

- Changed who you were to fit in: Occasionally attempted, never stuck. He's not good at keeping up a facade. One of his most embarrassing memories is trying to ask a girl to dance at a party his mother dragged him to when he was about 16, imitating the more popular "jock"-kinda guys, and getting laughed at so much he retreated to the buffet for the rest of the night.

LAYER SEVEN: FAVORITES

- Favorite color: Blue

- Favorite animal: Dogs, butterflies

- Favorite movie: Victor will confess to a love for schlocky monster movies, so he was quite enamored of Night of the Fish Men's Revenge when it came out (he's quite excited when he sees it in the projector in Eden Meadows Cinema, and quite sad that he can only get it to play the title screen). He also enjoyed Another Day In the Monster Factory for much the same reasons.

- Favorite game: With his affinity for comic books and a secret love of roleplaying (which becomes not-so-secret once he starts Silver Shrouding), Grognak & The Ruby Ruins quite appeals to him. He likes that it has some replay value too, with changing up your party and whatnot. The action of Pipfall appeals to him too, though that time limit can be stressful!

LAYER EIGHT: AGE

- DOB: June 9th, 2050 (he was 27 and a few months when the bombs dropped)

- Day of their next birthday, they will be: His next birthday according to the game would be June 9th, 2088 – he'd be 238 in terms of time passed, 28 in terms of biology

- Age they lost their virginity: Twenty – Victor had been yanked by the Army into Canada to help with the Sino-American war shortly after graduating high school, but got some leave around his twentieth birthday to go home. He immediately caught back up with his high school sweethearts, Victoria and Emily, and ended up doing the deed with Victoria. They managed to keep it a secret from their conservative parents, fortunately.

- Does age matter: In general? Victor is willing to listen to advice from those older than he is, certainly – though he tends to take it with a grain of salt depending on their obvious biases. In a relationship? Unless one of the parties is a minor, Victor won't get involved, though bigger gaps will probably make him wonder what exactly they see in each other. (He allows this is hypocritical of him to a degree, as Alice is much older than him even taking into account the freezing – but on the flip side, she was Embraced at 20, he was frozen at 27. . .)

LAYER NINE: IN A BOY OR GIRL

- Best personality: Victor likes people who are sweet and kind, but have a tougher or sassier side to them as well. Victoria leaned mostly toward the "sweet" side, but was also pretty determined when it came to getting what she wanted from him; Emily was cheerful and enthusiastic, but if you angered her – wooo boy; Alice of course is snark incarnate, but is kind to people and generally likes helping others. Even Piper is one of the kinder companions, but doesn't shy away from sarcastic comments.

- Best eye color: Well, Victoria and Emily both had blue eyes (of differing shades), and Alice's green eyes were one of the first things that struck Victor about her, sooo. . .blue or green!

- Best hair color: I'm not sure Victor has a preference here – Victoria was a super-light brown, almost gray; Emily was a blonde; Alice has dark hair that looks black or brown depending on the light/how well cared for it is (and she says her hair was almost red when she was a kid!); Piper has dark brown/black hair. I guess pre-War he went for lighter; post-War he goes for darker?

- Best thing to do with a partner: Victor likes finding some sort of creative interest they can share, or at least do at the same time. He would sit in the living room and draw while Victoria embroidered in the afternoons; and he and Emily both played piano, so they'd often have little duets. With Alice, he probably ends up illustrating some of the stories she tells – maybe eventually they throw together a book of sorts, with Piper's help!

LAYER TEN: FINISH THE SENTENCE

- I love: Alice! And the rest of my friends too, of course.

- I feel: completely out of my depth, most of the time.

- I hide: how anxious all of this makes me – not sure how well I'm succeeding, but. . .

- I miss: the life I had before, in Sanctuary.

- I wish: that Victoria and Emily hadn't – that t-they were still here to meet the friends I've made.

this is actually another piece of the same name [on the same ground/theme] from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book by Thomas Tallis, typically called Felix Namque II, as it appears second. 

Part of me wonders if he didn’t mean for the two to be played together, as the theme appears in primarily in opposite hands throughout the two pieces (in the left in II and the right in I) but in the modern edition of the FWB (specifically the reprinted version printed by Dover) they appear as bookends, with I closing volume 1 and II opening volume 2.

A Book of Hours Fifty Years Older than Previously Thought

Fifty-two discoveries from the BiblioPhilly project, No. 30/52

   Book of Hours, Use of Bourges, Philadelphia, Free Library of Philadelphia, Lewis E 87, fols. 6v–7r (end of Calendar and beginning of Gospel Lessons)

Sometimes, scholars can become fixated on a dated inscription in a manuscript, which can lead them to ignore other chronological evidence. In a Book of Hours now in the Free Library of Philadelphia, Lewis E 87, the lower pastedown includes a signed ownership note by the prominent Bourges patrician and book collector Jean Lallemant the Younger (ca. 1481–1548), dated to 12 July 1544.

Ever since the publication of the de Ricci Census and the catalogue of European manuscripts in the Free Library, this has been taken erroneously as the date of the book, which is in fact significantly earlier. While the book’s miniatures have been excised, which doesn’t help with establishing a proper date, the script and decoration indicate a date of circa 1490-1510, the heyday of devotional manuscript production in Bourges. The calendar includes obvious references to the capital of the Berry: the feast of Saint William, archbishop of Bourges (fol. 1r, 10 January) and the dedication of the Cathedral of Bourges are both highlighted in blue (fol. 3r, 5 May). Prior to the beginning of the Hours of the Virgin, a rubric on folio 7v mentions the Use of Bourges. Most strikingly, every remaining text page in the manuscript has been decorated with a shaded gold border on the three outer sides, a blue cherub at the outer margin and two red seraphim above and below the text respectively.

Jean Lallemant the Younger or le jeune was a member of a prominent family of Bourges patricians, among which were several bibliophiles.1 His grandfather, Guillaume Lallemant l’aïeul (d. 1474), was a merchant with close ties to the famous banker and purveyor of luxury goods Jacques Coeur, whose great urban residence survives to this day in Bourges. Jean Lallemant the Younger’s father, Jean Lallemant l’ancien (d. 1494), served as receiver general of Normandy, an important post in the kingdom’s financial administration. Our Jean Lallemant the Younger was treasurer general of the Languedoc region of France from 1505 to 1521. Interestingly, he owned several other manuscripts, including a Book of Hours now in The Hague. His older brother, also named Jean, owned a Book of Hours that was dismembered and is held at several institutions, including the British Library in London (add. MS 39641), The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore (W. 459), and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (Marlay Cuttings, Fr. 7). The book’s calendar, today in a private collection, is illustrated with putti that share a certain resemblance to those in our book.

Mary Tudor during the reign of Anne Boleyn - Part One 1533 - 1534

I wanted to do an accurate and detailed timeline as possible of everything that happened to Mary during the years Anne Boleyn was queen. Most know the basics, that she was mentally abused, harassed and depressed, but I wanted to show just how strong she was. 

She endured the loss of her royal title and the death of her mother, but refused to passively accept the situation she was in. Despite being away from court she remained at the forefront of many people’s minds, and was considered a true threat to King Henry for her actions, some which verged on treason.

Some events are undated, so for some that have a general date I’ve put whereabouts it occurred. Others I have no idea, and have put them in a order that most makes sense. I’ve used many quotes from sources, and included some letters. 

This got so long I had to split it into two parts, but here’s part one, 1533 - 1534, under the cut. I hope you find it interesting!  

1533

22nd April – Henry writes to Princess Mary, telling her of his new marriage. She is at first sad, before pretending to be happy at the news. She writes a letter to the King, and when pressed for a verbal answer she “would not say a single word, referring instead to her letter.” Upon reading it, the King is well satisfied and praises her prudence.

She is forbidden to write to her mother. She begs to send a messenger who might testify that she sends no message except asking how the queen is, or show the King the letters first. He refuses.

? - Is unwell, and asks for permission for the Queen’s physician and apothecary to attend to her which the King grants. The Queen is allowed to send her messages.

27th May – Mary goes from Otford, where she has been staying nearly a year, to Beaulieu. While here in late June, she finds out her aunt Mary has died.

17th July – John Hussey is commanded to deliver Mary’s jewels to Frances Aylmer.

21st July – John Hussey tells Thomas Cromwell he spoke to Margaret Pole, who will make an inventory of the jewels. She will not deliver them unless obtain direct orders from King.

22nd August – Cromwell writes to Hussey desiring Mary’s plate.

28th August – Hussey writes to Cromwell. He has examined the clerk of Mary’s jewel house, and spoken to Margaret Pole. She says the plate is occupied at all seasons and cannot be spared.

7th September - Birth of Elizabeth.

? -  Mary writes “a comforting letter to the Queen her mother, which is wonderfully good.”

? - Katherine replies back to Mary? [undated; c.late 1533 -  beginning of 1534?]:

Daughter, I heard such tidings today that I do perceive, if it be true, the time is come that Almighty God will prove you; and I am very glad of it, for I trust He doth handle you with a good love. I beseech you agree to His pleasure with a merry heart; and be you sure that, without fail, he will not suffer you to perish if you beware to offend Him." I pray you, good daughter, to offer yourself to Him. If any pangs come to you, shrive yourself; first make you clean; take heed of His commandments, and keep them as near as He will give you grace to do, for then are you sure armed. And if this lady do come to you, as it is spoken, if she do bring you a letter from the King, I am sure in the self-same letter you shall be commanded what you shall do. Answer you with few words, obeying the King your father in everything, save only that you will not offend God and lose your own soul; and go no further with learning and disputation in the matter. And wheresoever and in whatsoever company you shall come, [obey] the King's commandments. Speak you few words, and meddle nothing. I will send you two books in Latin : one shall be De Vita Christi, with the declaration of the Gospels ; and the other the Epistles of Jerome, that he did write always to St. Paula and Eustochium; and in them I trust you shall see good things. And sometimes, for your recreation, use your virginals, or lute, if you have any. But one thing specially I desire you, for the love that you do owe unto God and unto me, to keep your heart with a chaste mind, and your body from all ill and wanton company, [not] thinking nor desiring any husband, for Christ's Passion; neither determine yourself to any manner of living until this troublesome time be past; for I dare make you sure that you shall see a very good end, and better than you can desire. I would God, good daughter, that you did know with how good a heart I do write this letter unto you. I never did one with a better, for I perceive very well that God loveth you. I beseech Him of His goodness to continue it; and if it fortune that you shall have nobody to be with you of your acquaintance, I think it best you keep your keys yourself, for howsoever it is, so shall be done as shall please them. And now you shall begin, and by likelihood I shall follow. I set not a rush by it ; for when they have done the uttermost they can, then I am sure of the amendment. I pray you recommend me unto my good lady of Salisbury, and pray her to have a good heart, for we never come to the kingdom of Heaven but by troubles. Daughter, wheresoever you become, take no pain to send for me, for if I may I will send to you. By your loving mother, Katharine The Queen

20th September – Hussey tells Mary she is no longer a princess and is instead a bastard. She is astonished, and won’t accept unless he has direct writing from King. Her servants likewise agree a commandment given by John Hussey is not sufficient.

2nd October – Mary receives a letter stating the same from William Paulet, controller of the royal household. Disbelieving, she writes to the King:

“This morning my chamberlain came and informed me that he had received a letier from Sir Will. Paulet, controller of your House, to the effect that I should remove at once to Hertford castle. I desired to see the letter; in which was written "the lady Mary, the King's daughter," leaving out the name of Princess. Marvelled at this, thinking your Grace was not privy to it, not doubting but you take me for your lawful daughter, barn in true matrimony. If I agreed to the contrary I should offend God ; in all other things you shall find me an obedient daughter. From your manor of Beaulieu, 2 Oct.”

c. 9th October – The Earl of Essex [Henry Bourchier], the Earl of Oxford [John de Vere], Earl of Sussex [Robert Radcliffe] and Doctor Sampson go to Mary to tell her she is not to use the title of Princess. Mary makes them meet in front of her servants in case they put words in her mouth. She refuses to accept she is no longer a princess, bringing them nearly to tears. Mary writes to her father saying she would be obedient, but he cannot take away the titles God gave her. Her household is curtailed, with some such as her cofferer William Cholmeley, her cofferer entering Elizabeth’s household.

c.13th October – Mary moves from Beaulieu to Hertford castle. 

c. late October/early November? – Mary hears she will be lady’s maid to Elizabeth. Asks the Spanish ambassador and lawyer, Eustace Chapuys for advice. Chapuys sends Mary a protest stating she would not do anything which was prejudicial to her.

13th December – Duke of Norfolk [Thomas Howard, Anne Boleyn’s uncle] goes to Mary, telling her father’s pleasure is for her to enter service of Elizabeth who he calls Princess of Wales. Mary says that “is a title which belongs to I by right, and no other.” She says her father’s proposals are strange and unfitting. Norfolk said he is not there to debate. Mary is allowed half an hour in her private chamber, which she uses to draw out a protest Chapuys gave her, saying if she is compelled to or persuaded by deceit to renounce her rights, enter a nunnery or marry against her will, no prejudice should occur. Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury offers to go with her, paying for her own expenses, but is refused. Mary asks for a years wages given to her servants and leaves for Hatfield with 2 attendants/maids of honour.

On the way, Doctor Foxe, her father’s almoner, tells her to stand firm for the love of God, otherwise the whole kingdom is in ruin and perdition.

Arriving at Hatfield, Norfolk asks her if she will pay her respect to the Princess. Mary says she “knows no Princess in England except herself.” Mary tells him to tell the king his daughter, the Princess of Wales, begs for his blessing. He refuses, so she tells him to go away and leave her alone. She retires to her chamber, the worst in the house, to cry.

c.26th December – Mary has now been deprived of her 2 maids of honour who accompanied her. She has only one common chamber maid, who doesn’t taste her food, however she supports her and sends letters to and from Chapuys and others. She has all her food in her chamber, and no good guard about her. 

Anne Shelton, Anne Boleyn’s aunt, is in charge of the household. Lady Margaret Bryan, her old governess, mother of Elizabeth Carew is there, as well as William Cholmeley. 

Mary refuses to pay court to Elizabeth unless compelled by sheer force. She can no longer be served meat before 11am like before. In her own house Mary “was much desirous to have meat immediately after she was ready in the morning, or else she should be in danger eftsoons to return to her said infirmity.” Unable to have this, now Mary wants her breakfast larger instead, so she can eat a little piece of meat at supper.

1534

c.5th? January – Henry visits Hatfield, sends orders ahead that Mary should not come to him. Cromwell, the treasurer [William Fitzwilliam] and captain of the guard [William Kingston] are sent to persuade Mary to renounce her title. She replies it is labour wasted to press her and has given a decided answer. She asks to see Henry and kiss his hand, but is refused. When Henry is leaving, she goes to a terrace at the top of the house, and bends on her knees with hands joined. Henry sees, bows to her and put his hand to his hat. The men with him do the same before leaving.

? January - Mary has been warned to be on her guard. She had been having breakfast in her chamber then going to table in public not eating or drinking; this is no longer allowed. 

28th January - Chapuys sends to Mary “certain books of consolation, in which she takes great pleasure.” 

He tells her there has been a a report in France about her marriage to the Marquis of Saluzzo, and that she must not consent to any marriage without her mother’s and Charles V’s consent.

29th January - The Duke of Norfolk and Brian Tuke visit Mary, presumably to persuade her to submit to the king. 

? - Mary replies back to Chapuys, stating she will not marry without consent.

c.18?th February – Mary has no clothes and money, so sends a gentleman to the King. She also asks for her to attend mass at the church which adjoins the house but this is not allowed. Country people seeing her in the gallery salute her as princess and now she is kept closer. Nothing is done without the leave of Anne Shelton.

c.5th March – Anne Boleyn visits her daughter. She urgently solicits Mary to honour her as queen, saying it would be a means of reconciliation with the king, and she herself would intercede with him for her. Mary replies she “knew no Queen in England except her Mother, but if the said madam would do her that favour with her father she would be much obliged’.

16th March – Duke of Norfolk takes all her best clothes and jewels saying she is no longer princess and “her pride must be abated.” She continues to not pay court to Elizabeth unless forced – when walking together, she is always in front of or behind her when taken anywhere, instead of at her side. William Cholmeley is dismissed because he showed affection to her and did her some service.

23rd March - The First Act of Succession passed, declaring Mary a bastard and Elizabeth the heir.

25th March – A warrant is signed for new clothes for Mary.

26th March – Mary is forcibly put into a litter with Anne Shelton when she refuses to accompany Elizabeth to Eltham. She makes a public protest at the compulsion used.

c.? April – French ambassadors visit Elizabeth. Chapuys sends Mary a letter letting her know what has happened in Rome (Pope Clement has declared Henry and Catherine’s marriage valid), and that it is important she remain constant. Mary sends that she will do, and is better pleased with the said news then if they had sent her a million of gold.

18th April – Henry and Anne visit Eltham for 2 days with Richard Featherstone and more. Mary is commanded not to leave her chamber. One of Mary’s maids who refused to swear to the act of succession is locked up in her chamber and compelled to swear on threat of being taken to prison. Anne Shelton tells her if she were in the king’s place she would kick Mary out of the house for disobedience, and that the king said he would make her lose her head for violating the laws of his realm. Mary asks to see Richard Featherstone, her old tutor to confirm this. They speak in Latin so people don’t understand; Featherstone says “that is not good Latin”.

c.1st? May – The royal comptroller [William Paulet], and the Earl of Wiltshire [Thomas Boleyn] visit Mary to try and make her renounce title. She refuses.

c.10th? May – Mary’s maid who had been compelled to swear the act is dismissed, and has no where to go or a means to support herself. Mary is “much grieved for she was the only one in whom she had confidence, and by her means letters” from Chapuys and others. Her confessor is dismissed and replaced by another ‘Lutheran’. After her maid is dismissed, Henry sends a message begging if she would lay aside her obstinacy he would promise her before Michaelmas that she would have a royal title. She doesn’t believe him and refuses, as “God has not blinded her to confess her father and mother had lived in adultery and made her a bastard”.

7th June – Mary signs the letter of protestation Chapuys wrote and sent her before moving to Hatfield against her treatment. She declares she will not marry, enter a monastery or take any step without the consent of her mother. She diverts the guards around her to send it to Chapuys. Mary expects she will die. She believes “she could not better gain Paradise than by such a death.”

12th July – Chapuys warns Mary that William Paulet and Thomas Boleyn will visit her again tomorrow.

13th July – Paulet and Boleyn visit Mary for a second time. She is threatened to be shut up in her chamber.

27th July – King visits Eltham to see Elizabeth. He sends a gentlemen to make Mary withdraw to her chamber so she would not see him.

29th August – Hearing that the King intends the household to move to Hunsdon and for her to accompany Elizabeth, Mary sends to Chapuys 3 times in less then 24 hours to know what to do. He says he will go to Greenwich in disguise and see her pass, and to speak boldly but not go to extreme of being taken by force.

The comptroller promises she will not go after Elizabeth, however the litter is already there and Mary is compelled to go after. Instead, the comptroller allows her, as soon as she is mounted to go before or after the litter as she pleased. As soon as she on horseback she pushes forward, galloping ahead and arriving at Greenwich an hour before Elizabeth. 

She enters the waiting royal barge and sits in the most honourable place. When they set sail, a disguised Chapuys watches on from the riverside.

? - Mary is diseased in her head and stomach, causing Anne Shelton to send for a Mr Michael who gave her pills. These cause her to be sick. One of Chapuys’s servants coming to see how she did is not allowed to see her. He warns her that mischief might arrive if anything happens to Mary.

2nd September – The royal physician William Butts visits Mary, who is at the beginning of her “old disease”. He sends for her mother’s physician and the apothecary. 

? – The Queen’s physician and apothecary visit Mary. A messenger telling them to pay their respects to Elizabeth before Mary arrives late. They can only talk to Mary in the presence of other people, and only in English.

? - Mary sends a letter to Nicholas Carew. 

? - Margaret Bryan gives her daughter, Elizabeth Carew’s, reply to Mary. Elizabeth desires Mary “for the passion of Christ in all things to follow the King otherwise she was utterly undone.’” The letter had been opened. 

20th September – Anne Shelton asks Mary who she got to send her letter to Nicholas. She tells her it was her servant Randall Dodd; Margaret Bryan confirms she is telling the truth.

27th September –  Henry has renewed his affections for a lady of the court who supports Mary.

c.10th October –  Henry’s new mistress sends a letter to Mary telling her to be of good cheer, and that her troubles will soon come to an end, and when the opportunity occurs she will show herself a true and devoted servant. 

c.20th October – Before Mary leaves the More for Richmond, she is visited by nearly all the gentlemen and ladies of court to Anne Boleyn’s annoyance. Chapuys tells her that as the King’s severity is abating she must take care not to give him any cause for offence and his protestation he made for her preserved her from any danger. She must make no difficulty about following Elizabeth this time but should say she is very glad in this to satisfy her father.

Mary goes to Richmond in a velvet litter, instead of the leather one used previously. At Richmond, to avoid having to follow Elizabeth’s litter, she chooses to go by water to see Chapuys watching by the riverside again.

In the evening she arranges with bargemen to row her along the bank. She sends a message to Chapuys to make sure he would not fail to be at his house nearby so she could see him. 

c.21st October - She persuades the steersman to go down one side of the river. When she gets near Chapuys she orders the barge to be uncovered and goes on deck in the most conspicuous place so they could see each other.  

c.22nd October – Anne Boleyn visits Richmond to see her daughter, with the Duke of Norfolk, Duke of Suffolk, and ladies. Mary refuses to leave her chamber until Anne Boleyn is gone so she won’t see her.

c.23rd? October – Mary informs Chapuys via letter that Anne is making those about her show her all the rudeness and annoyance they could.

c.17th November – Mary has a slight illness again. Anne Shelton continues to  induce her to renounce her title of Princess. Duke of Norfolk has placed in the Tower one of Mary’s maids, accused of calling her princess. He wants to know who had informed Chapuys to wait by the riverside to see Mary pass.

c.19th December – The maid in the Tower has been released but forbidden to return to Mary. 

Mary is ill, and the king sends his physician. They determine her illness is partly from ill treatment. The physician advises to send her to her mother, Henry refuses.

c. late December – Mary is told if she doesn’t renounce her title of princess she will go to the Tower or die. The people in her household desire her death, “by which they say the world will be at peace and they will be discharged of the pain and trouble she gives them.”
