"Go and ask your mom where's she's put it," said Charlie. "I can't. She gets really angry if I wake her up on Sunday morning." Benjamin began to bite his lip. Luckily before Benjamin could get too upset,

this book is less Midnight For Charlie Bone and more Concern For Benjamin Brown. I know his parents aren't actually abusive or anything but every word I read abut Ben's home life makes me so sad.

"Bring the case up here," said Benjamin, kneeling as close as he dared. Charlie was already trying to fit the first key into the lock. "I think I'll do it down here," he said. "You never know what might come out of it."

They're like 10 and 11 so I understand why their decision making isn't the best, but I still have to wonder why Charlie would be willing to trap himself in a basement with anything that comes out. Take it to the backyard or a park or something.

A woman stood on the step. She had black hair and she wore a dark, sleek-looking coat. Although she'd been half-hidden by an umbrella the last time he saw her, Benjamin had a very good idea who she was. He recognized the red boots. It was one of Charlie's Yewbeam aunts.

"Really?" The aunt raised a long black eyebrow She wasn't smiling anymore. "How strange. He said he was coming to see you." "No, he didn't," said Benjamin. "Oh, and how would you know?" She had lost every ounce of her sweetness. "Because he'd be here if he had," said Benjamin, without a moment's hesitation.

Props to Ben for that one, very clever.

Benjamin watched his friend dash through the gate without bothering to look either way He was bound to be caught by that horrible aunt.

"Maybe I've fooled her," muttered Charlie. He ran up to Filbert Street, turned the corner, and "Got you!" said a voice. Aunt Venetia sank her long nails into Charlie's shoulder.

"Well done, Venetia. One needs young legs to catch a villain." "Villain?" protested Charlie. He glanced at Aunt Venetia's red boots. Her legs weren't so very young. She was cunning, that was all.

That dastardly Venetia, and her cunning trick of... Charlie not looking where he's going. Damn her to hell!

"I don't know what you're talking about," said Charlie. He refused to answer any more questions and eventually Grandma Bone gave up.

That said, Charlie knows the golden rule of being interrogated by the cops Grandma: shut the fuck up.

He didn't find Maisie on the doorstep; instead he found a boy with a twinkling sort of face. He was a little taller than Charlie, his hair was a bright shiny brown, and his eyes almost the same color.

"Not many,” said Fidelio. "I don't know you all. Some of you are actually talented as well as endowed. What can you do, by the way?"

Btw it sure is um. interesting. that all the Good Kids (aside from Charlie) are the double talented geniuses while the Bad Kids are all apathetic to or shitty at the arts. Like it's not that deep but it's kinda annoying.

That afternoon Charlie set to work on the papers Fidelio had left with him. He soon realized it would be easier to learn the notes while he was sitting at the piano, but he had only pressed a few keys when Grandma Bone burst in, demanding to know why he was making such a racket.

In the evenings Grandma Bone allowed Charlie to open the piano and play the notes Fidelio had given him to memorize. But one day he forgot. He was so hungry he went to the kitchen and began eating bread and butter. After a few bites his head sank to the table and he fell asleep. He woke up to find Grandma Bone holding his head up by his hair. "Music, Charlie!" she barked at him. "No supper until you've done your music."

He sat back and, folding his arms across his chest, he murmured, "If my father were here he could teach me. I suppose he was the last person to play this piano properly." Grandma Bone was about to walk away but, all at once, she said, "Your father had a grand piano. It stood in the center of a large, bright room. The only things in the room were the piano and Lyell, your father. Through the long windows there was a view of the lake, but your father never looked at it. He gazed at his music while his fingers found the notes. And he would cast his spell." “And then what happened?" Charlie asked bravely. He could almost hear the click in Grandma Bone as she snapped out of her reverie. "He broke the rules, Charlie. That's what happened. Beware it doesn't happen to you."

This might be the nicest thing Grandma Bone says in this series.

But Maisie said his gift should be used, for fun if nothing else. Eventually. she persuaded Charlie to listen in on a photo of her favorite film stars: Gregory Morton and Lydia Smiley.

Google says Gregory Morton is real, but not Lydia Smiley. Were they both supposed to be fake??

Charlie scurried upstairs to his room, leaving Maisie and Grandma Bone shouting insults at each other. He was about to sit at his desk when he caught sight of Benjamin crossing the road. Charlie waved and opened his window. "What's going on?" called Benjamin. "I haven't seen you for days. I keep ringing your bell but no one will let me in." Charlie lifted the black file. "I've had five hundred questions to do," he told Benjamin. "Only two hundred to go now, and I get a free weekend. How's the you-know-what?" "Bad," said Benjamin. "It's still making a noise. One of your horrible aunts came around. She was pretending to be collecting for charity but I knew her. She was just like the other one, only older." "You didn't let her in?" asked Charlie anxiously. “No. Runner gave his killer growl and she left." "Good old Runner. I've got to get back to work now, Ben." Charlie gave a huge sigh. "See you on Friday when I've finished the questions."

Ok. And Grandma Bone didn't hear them shouting at each other about the case? Guess she and Maisie were really going at it, huh?

Originally a family business rooted in Pennsylvania, Fennec’s has just recently appeared in Saintes along with the arrival of its newest owner, Piper Allegheny. Despite the change in location, Piper’s proud to say she still follows the centuries old coveted Allegheny family recipes. Boasting a wide variety of baked goods, unique candies, and specialty coffee brews prepared fresh each and every day, Fennec’s offers sugary treats that are sure to sweeten any supernatural’s senses. ♡ History: The Alleghenys were a long-standing familiar bloodline with reputations as resourceful and wise tradespeople. During the early 1700's, old Roe Allegheny was the first of his lineage to finally set down permanent roots, exchanging his caravaneer lifestyle for a small slice of land in Pennsylvania. He and his wife, a human named Edith, turned to farming as a means of income and found good profits from their work- enough so to turn their home into an inn only a stone's throw away from the nearest town. It quickly became something of a safe haven for travelers of all sorts to seek shelter, drinks, and home cooked meals at. It wasn't just the hospitality that made the Allegheny Inn so popular however. Edith had a way with baked goods that alone had customers forming lines at the inn's doors in the early mornings. Gingerbread, cream filberts, eclairs and more- Edith's recipes were the inn's secret weapon.

Roe and Edith's only son Fennec, born in the late 1700's, continued to build upon the family legacy long after his parents passed. The young familiar successfully kept the inn in steady business before his first troubles arose around 1855. The county sheriff William Magill had recently opened subtle investigations into numerous rumors of the inn being a front for supernatural beings seeking refuge in the town’s shadows. The rumors were all true of course- Fennec had started keeping tabs on any other supernaturals that frequented the area, often helping them flee into Toronto to evade bounty hunters and the likes. Despite this, it seemed Fennec was always one step ahead of the sheriff and his pesky officers.

By 1859, Fennec had consistently outsmarted sheriff Magill and his protégé shreiff Patterson, tiring the second lawman out after only his first year of duty. The newest sheriff, James Grahm, would prove to be a bit more stubborn than his peers. Grahm believed the rumors to be true, but also recognized the failures of the sheriffs before him. Knowing Fennec was a witty adversary, he turned to the freshly established Pinkerton Agency to assist him in the investigations. At that time many of the agents had already passed the sheriff's tales off as little more than ghost stories and superstitious banter, and after a month had gone by without any solid evidence being uncovered to back the town's rumors, the Pennsylvania Pinkerton operation decided to recall the town's party. Their departure left sheriff Grahm and his reputation in the dust. It was another win for Fennec and the town's supernaturals, however it would be very short lived.

In the summer of 1860, the Allegheny Inn burned to the ground in the middle of the day. Grahm and his officers investigated the "accident" and claimed it was simply an unfortunate act of God. Fennec was quick to refute the claim, arguing that Grahm surely had more to do with the incident than God did. The public dispute turned physical, and the sheriff's lackies jumped in to overpower Fennec. They brandished him a heathenous outlaw, and promptly ran him out of town.

With nothing to his name and nowhere to go, Fennec had no choice but to return to his family's old way of life. He wandered the outskirts of the Appalachians, exchanging his foraged goods and camp services with travelers. It brought in just enough money to keep him alive, but Fennec wanted more than mere survival. He started saving up, keeping portions of his meager earnings tucked away in hidden caches along his trade routes. By 1905 he'd accumulated enough money between the caches to open a small rest stop further up in northern Pennsylvania. It wasn't much, but Fennec was optimistic. In a few years time his mother's recipes would become something of a staple for locals and newcomers alike, and grow the business into the bones of a bustling new enterprise: Fennec's Confectionary. Only a handful of years later Fennec would meet a young Earth elemental named Ruth, and the pair birthed their only son Jack in 1918. Jack took to working in the town's mines while Fennec and Ruth lived out the rest of their days happily serving the confectionary until Ruth's passing in 1967. Following his mother's death, Jack left the mining industry and started working alongside his father. Fennec passed away in 1991, just a year after Jack married a female familiar named Selene.

Jack and Selene struggled to conceive a child for years until their miraculous pregnancy finally came. On October 4th, 1995, little Piper Allegheny was born. Not much is publicly known about the Allegheny family after this, though it's said Jack and Selene had some sort of falling out to the point where she decided to up and leave her husband and daughter overnight. Piper completed highschool and moved out of state briefly to study business management at the University of Virginia. After graduating she promptly took over Fennec's, and only a few months into officially owning the business Piper relocated to the new supernatural safe haven in Saintes, Louisiana.

Swing

You return after being away for some time.

This is a bit of Animal Crossing fanfiction originally written for the Iron Fic contest at Naka-Kon 2022. Per the contest's rules, the original and submitted drafts were written in less than an hour with the prompt "Getting Back Into the Swing of Things". I never got the submitted draft back but, if you're curious, you can find the original here.

You swing your front door open, taking in the clear night air. A cloud of dust follows on your heels before the door closes again. You cringe, already dreading the mess you’ll find when you come home again.

Making your way along your island’s pathways, you mentally list the chores you need to catch up on. Weeds need to be picked, flowers need to be rearranged, and roaches need to be squished. You sigh.

It’s a lot. Your island is a far cry from its former five-star glory. There’s so much to do but there’s no time for it now.

As you pass by town hall, you run across Maple. She waves cheerily and hurries over to you.

“You’ve been gone so long, honeycomb!” she exclaims. “Where have you been?”

You tell her you’ve been out on an adventure. She giggles in delight.

“Just like one of my books! You’ll have to tell me all about it,” she insists.

You promise her you will later but you need to be on your way. She waves good-bye and you continue on.

You run across Filbert next. He’s standing on the path, mesmerized by a moth fluttering around Tangy’s house. You almost leave him to it before changing your mind.

Equipping your net, you catch the moth and hand it to him.

“Oh thanks, jellybean! How did you know I wanted a moth?” he asks.

You smile and tell him it was a gut feeling. He nods sagely.

“I get those too. Usually after I eat a grilled cheese.”

You tell him that might be because he’s lactose-intolerant, but he only laughs.

Before you can excuse yourself, he says something about taking his new bug friend home before scurrying off. You laugh and move on.

When you reach Roscoe’s house, you knock. You can’t help but fidget as you wait even though it isn’t long before he opens the door.

You grin and offer him a cheeky hello.

He looks you over and you try your best to hold the smile on your face. Fortunately, he invites you in before it can slip off.

“It’s been a while, kid. What have you been up to?” he asks.

You start to tell him what you told Maple. You hardly get a word out though before he waves you off.

“Where have you really been, kid?”

You stop. You take a breath, and then another. You try to tell him but the words won’t come. Instead, tears well up in your eyes.

Roscoe pats your head and it’s all you can take.

You hiccup and a cry is ripped from your throat. You tell him everything: the overdue homework assignments, the endless job applications, the dishes piling up in the sink.

He listens, nodding along. He doesn’t say a word until your sobs have quieted to soft hiccups.

“You can worry about all that in the morning,” he tells you. “For now, come sit with me. We can catch up.”

You nod, sniffling, but freeze as the town tune rings out across the island. It reminds you it’s already two in the morning. Roscoe nods in understanding before you can say anything.

“It was good seeing you, kid. Go get some rest and come back when you’ve got time to spare. We miss seeing your face when you’re gone.”

Roscoe ushers you out the door. You pause on his front step and wish him a good night. He gives you a rare smile before closing the door behind you.

You take a moment to stand on the path outside Roscoe’s house. Looking up, a blanket of stars twinkles above you. A sense of peace washes over you.

With one last, deep breath, you press ‘–’ and log out.

How To Choose A Good Reference Photo For Portrait

Choosing a subject for a portrait must be a smart one! But how to choose an ideal portrait reference? Consider these Points to select the reference.

 Lighting, meaning it must not be too overexposed(too bright) or underexposed(too dull).

 High Resolution (Search for large size images)

 Composition (Balanced with breathing space)

 Matches the looks of a person in actuality. We look different in different photos and angles, it is best to choose  a reference that reflects the best of the person, it could be the smile, the cheeks, dimple, or any feature.

Don’t Miss On Proportions

If the Drawing is not accurate, how matter realistic you try to shade, it is meaningless as the base has been ignored. Even if you draw using a grid, you may end up making mistakes! Understand the anatomy and keep checking the proportions again and again. To check the accuracy at this first stage and the last stage too, use this trick! Turn your pencil art work upside down and do not name the features as eyes, nose, lips, etc. Just focus on accuracy of lines, abstract shapes. Another trick is to flip the drawing and reference vertically and check the accuracy. Proportions are accurate when you draw what you see and not what you know.

 What To Start First After Portraits Drawings

The further process is exactly how we teach in our online art classes. 0 Lightly just shade the dark areas so that you can identify the character of the portrait before working in a detailed way. To start the portrait, if you are a right handed artist, start from the top left part of the drawing. In case if you are a left handed artist, start from the right top corner. Another better option is always going from top to bottom.

How To Draw Hair

While drawing any type of hair, Note these few things which can make them look more realistic.

 Always shade in the direction of the flow of hair in the reference and create a base layer

 Maintain the contrast in hair. Let the hair be in any colour or type, either the darkest dark v/s dark values or   the lightest value v/s white. 

 We have the tendency of adding more highlights than actual ones. Maintain the light areas as it is or add   highlights in the end.

 Bonus Tip: I am sure many of us face the problem of seeing white spots due to textured paper and charcoal  doesn’t fill the gap completely. In such cases, use a Sharp pencil and fill in first and in the final stage use a  Filbert brush to fill those gaps.

How To Draw The Skin

Skin Texture is not just about learning wrinkles, pores and freckles. Many of them fail in bringing realism to skin because they focus more on texture rather than one important aspect. Could you guess that? It is the transition of tones from dark to light underneath them. Do not miss on 

 The base transition of tones, 

 Keep the halftones, highlights, the shadows in place 

 Only then, add textures! 

How To Draw Eyes

There are a thousand photos, and videos on the eye!  The eye is an attractive emotive subject to draw. In portraits drawings, several steps must be considered while drawing an eye.

Outline of the eye. Every realistic face is 5 eyes wide and we often make mistakes by drawing the eyes bigger in  size than actual. Always cross check the accuracy and mark the pupil and highlight

 First, shade the pupil and then shade the iris in the direction of circumference. Pro-tip: Keep the edge of the   iris slightly blurry just as our eyes are.

 Another tip is, that the sclera (white part of the eye) is never purely white! Capture that light tonal value! Only   the highlights are white. This really transforms your eye into a realistic one

 Add depth in and around the eye skin. Darken the creases using 2B or 4B.

 Draw the eyelashes and eyebrows using an extremely sharp pencil and in the eye.

How To Draw The Nose

 Focus on the dimension of the nose before shading it. It will help you in rendering the lighter tones in an   accurate place.  

 The Nose will always cast a shadow and it’s necessary to notice it and render it carefully.

 For Textures, the direction of the pore textures will be in the direction of dimension and flow.

How To Draw Lips 

Portraits Drawing lips and teeth are often started with a base layer and then adding the tones just as in the skin. Here the highlights must be made in the end. For teeth, always use HB or B to shade them.

How To Define The Subject

Portraits Drawing is a balancing act. Just as we need to “specify” some areas of our drawing (like the focal point), we need to “simplify” others too. Both create balance. A common tendency is to draw detail just because it’s there, you cannot ignore it! Details everywhere are very uncomfortable to look at! To hold on to a viewer’s attention, simplifying the rest is important. In Portraits, the highlights in the drapery of cloth and rest must be toned down (fade) and soft edged.

How To Give Background

The Background is not a compulsion. But there are three things must consider while making backgrounds.

 The Background must be natural and blurred. A Shallow depth of field in camera can help you achieve.

 Transition backgrounds look calm and do not overpower the subject, rather help in achieving the finishing   touch to it.

 Always consider the lighting of the background, it matters a lot. utilise natural window light or soft lighting for   soft backgrounds

Many create contrasting Booker backgrounds which are as bright as the subject which fails in attracting a viewer’s attention to the portrait. This is one of the most challenging portraits I made recently.

Levi Strauss Plaza, San Francisco (No. 2)

Levi Strauss & Co. provided significant input into the development of the facility. Bill Valentine, a designer at HOK, said "Someone at Levi's said they wanted it to feel like a well-worn pair of blue jeans. And that's what we tried to do -- it's off the cuff, never symmetrical, it's easy-going and relaxed."Levi Strauss wanted the new complex to promote mixing of all classes of employees. At its previous Embarcadero facility, the building forced upper level and lower level employees to be located on different floors, so the groups could not meet each other in common areas. A large atrium in one of the buildings is placed so that employees of all ranks receive the same view, and not just the higher up employees. Decks providing views of the surrounding city were used to integrate the inside and outside areas.

Keiko Yamagami of Gensler and Associates said that the designs, which she said were buildings within larger buildings, gives the corridor the atmosphere of "small street in a little town." Each campus building houses a "mini plaza." Yamagami said that each one is "sort of like the den in a home." Contrasting materials, such as rubber tile flooring, set off major circulation areas within the campus. Yamagami says that the flooring, which has a pattern, uses colors that "were almost like an impressionist painting." She emphasized that it had "West Coast sunset colors" The campus also houses an exercise room and various kitchenettes with different themes. Yamagami said in 1989 that the "garden den," with furniture styled like those used in outdoor settings, was among the most popular. The Levi Strauss cafeteria has 30-foot (9.1 m) by 40-foot (12 m) pavilion spaces, each of which have distinct colors and identities. Yamagami said that the company "didn't want to have an institutionalized cafeteria, they wanted to have a cafeteria that felt like a restaurant."

Levi's Plaza incorporated the Italian Swiss Colony Building into its design, and the complex was designed to fit into the surrounding neighborhood. In 1991 David Armstrong of The Toronto Star said that at Levi's Plaza, the then-new red brick buildings "blend in with historic warehouses." The building was designed to respect the residents of Telegraph Hill, which provided a backdrop to Levi's Plaza.

Saddleman Building (1355 Sansome Street), four floors, 64,000 square feet (5,900 m2) of space.

In 1998 Levi Strauss & Co. moved its employees out of Saddleman after seven women working there had developed breast cancer.The breast cancer cases appeared in 1996 and 1997, and a fear of cancer among the employees after an employee had a meeting with CEO Robert Haas. A study determined that the building did not pose a health hazard, but employees feared working in the building. In the summer of that year, employees began to be moved out. By October 1998, no employees were left.

The company originally stated that a downsizing had prompted to pull employees out of Saddleman. Several internal memorandums revealed that the fears of employees prompted the company to remove its employees from the building.At one time the consumer affairs, engineering groups, and pattern makers were located in the building.

The complex includes retail center that serves residents of the area and employees. Glenn Brank of the Sacramento Bee said that the retail center was "modest." As of 1987 Levi Strauss has a 450 person company cafeteria within the complex.

As of 1998, 66% of the space at Levi Plaza is dedicated to open plazas and park land. Levi Plaza Park is a facility at the complex. Liz Allen of the Public Library of Science said that the park is "a Zen oasis of willow trees, water, rocks and a meandering path in the busy city." Lawrence Halprin, a landscape architect, helped design the Levi Strauss Plaza.To coincide with the completion of the Levi Strauss Plaza, several of his design sketches were placed on exhibit. It is divided by Battery Street into two distinct parts. As of 1991 various community events were held at the park.

Levi's Plaza formerly had the Ice House, a 200,000 square feet (19,000 m2) facility. In 1991 Levi Strauss & Co. acquired it. In 1998 the company planned to redesign the facility.
