Maybe not like... literature. But I definitely want to write for television someday.

Going unnoticed was a skill she had acquired in early childhood. 

It had started as a defense mechanism, a way for her to keep herself safe when her step-father, Wayne, went off on one of his drinking binges and came home in such a state of intoxication that it was best to stay away and out of his way. But as she grew, she found that she liked it that way best. Being invisible provided her with a sense of freedom that was rarely disturbed. 

But more than a skill, it had become a necessity.

(@obsessivedaydreamer is about to be a happy gal, literally all I've got for this one for now though lol)

🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

Yes. @obsessivedaydreamer knows I've been researching superyachts and sailing for MONTHS now. Vocabulary, process, routine, layouts, uniforms, personnel and lodging. There is SO MUCH to learn. I might be able to join a crew by the end of this.

🎉 What leads you to consider a fic a success?

If we're talking about "third-party" success... what I love about ff.net is that it lets me see a bunch of stats. I look at views more than anything, because while I love knowing that people read it. Comments are nice and favorites and follows are great, but the reads are what matter most to me.

But usually, I consider it a success if I'm not annoyed with it or embarrassed by it within a couple of months

Man, this is difficult! 🥹😆 I have always loved the act of writing, the wrangling of the words, the wrestling of the ideas, and trying to untangle the story that the characters need told. And I've always more or less enjoyed reading back my own work. But in the last year, I've gotten to share my writing in a new way, and it's been so much fun.

Okay: "Hazel, you're a halfway decent writer. You managed to write hot virgin smut in a story about Bible camp, and chapter 4 of The Chain gives me chills every time I read it. Love, Hazel."

Thank you for asking, Danielle! Forgive me if half the things don't make sense... Still battling this stupid flu, but I'm finally on the mend.

📈 How many fics do you have?

This is such a broad question! The short but true answer is that the number is in the hundreds, between all the stories I wrote in my tweens/teens, to the ones I've written in the last few years. (I know I have probably reached and surpassed more than 100 stories all split between various notes, docs, and word docs.)

But if it's posted... 18 on AO3 (though one of those fics is like a small collection, so it could be 21). Then we have some of those stories in my teens, but I've lost count... At least 2 more on FF.net, and a few more somewhere on LJ and various forums.

👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please!

I have a lot of them, to different degrees of “just need another pass before sending it to a beta” to “will I ever finish writing this?”

The one that I'm most focused on right now (even if I haven't touched it in ten days) is a pregnancy AU. I had the idea in February but only started writing it in June, and it's basically a TWW season 4/5 AU in which CJ gets pregnant. I'm still struggling with the vision already, but it's been fun to explore almost the same events from S5 on the show through this new lens. There are 9 chapters and 55k words written so far! As I mentioned the other day, I'd say I'm either halfway or two-thirds in, but I'm not sure how much I'll cover. And though I don't know what to think of it, those who have read it do like it. (I cannot post it until I am either done with the story, or know I won't tweak things. I would take so long to update.)

I also have a campaign vignettes fic that I still write from time to time, and a bunch of almost-ready stuff that I need to edit once I find some energy. (I also get the sense people are not into my stuff, so it's not like I prioritize it.)

😬 Which of your fics would you be most horrified for friends, family, or coworkers to stumble upon?

Part of me wants to say 'all of them' because my writing and stories still feel personal, and I don't know what they'd think about it. I'm not a writer!

But the true answer is another wip that Ally/@onekisstotakewithme has dubbed the 'one bed sexy bits' (I called it 'one bed 2.5'). The thought of anyone reading that is just too much two people have 🫣🫣🫣. This goes for other spice I've written in other WIPs, but that one is too much.

🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you write fanfic?

Some do, yes. Fanfiction isn't well known here, most people are not even aware that it exists, which also means there are no preconceived ideas about it being shameful or lame or whatever, like in other countries (judging from what I see online). So I have told friends I've written stories based on popular characters for an online community and that many readers have left me positive comments and most find it rather impressive. My therapy group knows, too. It's more controversial to say that the stories are gay romance with explicit sex so I've only told a few people about that.

Also, during my very first anon fest (Draco Tops Harry 2017), my entry was doing really well, which was surprising and unexpected as I'd never taken part in such a big fest before, and I told my (very conservative) parents. Not about the explicit sex obv, but that I wrote a story online and that people liked it a lot and I had over 100 "likes" then. They were proud.

✅ What's something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don't mean to?

I tend to write about clubbing and parties a lot, esp. in my longer fics. Even if there's no clubbing, there'll be some kind of party or a ball or some sort of gathering. Several characters together having breakfast, maybe. I have recently come to realise that I really enjoy writing party scenes and many people interacting together. Idk why but it works for me. It's occasionally a way to get unstuck when I'm in the "what happens next" quagmire.

😅 What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?

i can't think of anything? i do cringe at some of my early writing when i reread it, but not because it's horrible or because i'm embarrassed it's just... i've gotten a lot better. which is awesome. pretty much if i post it i'm happy for other people to see it and read it. i've never deleted a fic and the only time i've made significant edits it was because i realized i'd unintentionally fallen into some harmful race-related territory, so i learned and made some edits to reflect what i'd learned.

🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?

this bit from be cool of law giving tk hell as he's freaking out about running into pat in an airport (it's an au - pat is a hockey player, tk and law are regular dudes)

“What do I do?” “I mean. I dunno, bud. Go say hi? Offer to suck his dick? Tell him that you have elaborate fantasies about being his WAG?” “Shut up, don’t be a dick.” “You could go tell him that you have every gif that’s ever been created of him spitting saved on your shitty phone.”

😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?

i'm not mean on purpose i just love angst! i can't think of anything. all the parts you yell at me for genuinely delight me 😂 like they make me sad too but in a hurts so good kind of way.

i feel like my best strength as a writer is giving enough of a world to suck the reader in and make it interesting in a short fic without a lot of worldbuilding. writing longer things with more plot and more worldbuilding is definitely harder for me; i love doing shorter things and cramming as much in there as i can.

I think I write dialogue well! It's one of the stronger points of my writing as far as I can tell. I also really enjoy writing it, which works out nicely for me.

🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

Anytime I have Jiang Yuelou cup or caress Chen Yuzhi's neck...I die every time I write it. Because that's such a thing in the drama that it's important to have in every fic and when I go back and re-read the fics and I come upon the scene, I gasp. Every. fucking. time

💞 Who's your comfort character?

Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi. They're a packaged deal at this point. You don't get one without the other

🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

Ooo...okay. Some advice I would give is if you have an idea that you really want to write/it just won't leave you alone...just write it. Even if you think someone's done it before/it's been written before...fuck it, just write it. Every writer is unique so every idea/trope they write will be unique to them.

And if you're afraid that you're writing too much of one fandom/couple/idea...don't be. You will gain a following of loyal readers who will enjoy your fics, no matter what you write, and they might even request more of that type of fic.

Also, and I know every writer says this, but keep writing. Your writing will improve so much if you just keep writing. Like you will notice a difference in writing. But make sure to take breaks in between too. If you're starting to feel off/you're starting to hate your writing...take a break. Watch tv, listen to music, read a book, read fanfic that's not your own writing...just do anything else. Get out in nature, go for a walk, whatever. You need to take breaks and get away from your computer and out of your head.

Wow, so difficult to choose — but here’s one of my favorites, from Tramps Like Us:

This is what I was born to do. What he was born to do. They were no longer running away, they were running to. To Luke and Chewie, to the Falcon, to the Rebellion, to each other. To freedom, to life. Baby, we’ll never go back.

✨ Out of the comments you’ve received on your fics, what are two or three of your favorites?

Again, very difficult to choose, but here are some that stand out:

- One reader said that my dialogue was distinctive enough for each character that they could tell who was speaking without needing to look at the “he said” directions, that they could hear my Leia, Han, Luke, Wedge, and others by the way they spoke.

- I’ve had readers say that they could hear Carrie’s voice in my Leia, and I feel like that is a high compliment.

- On one of my smut pieces, someone commented not only that it was some of the best HanLeia smut they’d read (which, damn! There is some good smut out there, too) but also said “I never thought I could have emotions about a hand or blowjob…but I did and it was great.” I always get nervous about writing smut so that one was really appreciated (although I will be honest that I did not have “gave someone feelings about a blowjob” on my fic writer bingo card).

🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

SO MUCH TIME really, it depends on what I'm writing because some things require more research than others, and with Mass Effect, there's a lot of blanks that can be filled in with just making stuff up. But even making stuff up requires research to an extent for me, because I am only willing to handwave so much. I've been doing a metric ton of research lately because I am working on an mshenko Regency AU, and I want to be as period accurate as possible. Which leads directly into your second question lol

👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please!

So I have this NPC romance that's happening in a D&D game I am currently playing in that has some pretty hardcore Regency vibes, and I just rewatched A Court of Fey and Flowers (Dimension 20 D&D campaign, for anyone that doesn't know), so I am fully on my Regency bullshit. As such, I've come up with an idea for an mshenko Regency AU! I am, however, VERY BAD at romance as plot, so I've turned it into like... a supernatural mystery thing with secret societies and such. I am very excited about sticking Alex in the Regency era lol

🦅 Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants? I usually have a very basic outline that's pretty much a paragraph or two or three of stream-of-consciousness from when I first imagine the fic. However, one sentence in the outline might balloon into a whole chapter, or more than one chapter, so there's a lot of pantsing happening as well.

🤩 Who is your favorite character to write? Probably a tie between Gordon and Benrey, and so therefore it's BUBBY WITH A STEEL CHAIR. Bubby very often ends up saying things I need someone to say in order to move the plot along. He was great for that in Speechless - which was one of the reasons we went in a reverse order for the reuniting of the science team.

🤲 Would you please share a snippet of a wip? I would love to. From the next chapter of Speechless: "Gordon leaned back a little and exchanged a glance with Bubby, who looked similarly unsettled by the suggestion that the easy-going scientist might have a spine of steel. On the one hand, that could be useful if he decided to travel with them. On the other hand…Gordon looked down at the minigun grafted to his arm. He wasn’t sure he trusted this guy as far as he could throw him. And with his current physical situation, that wasn’t going to be very far."

⌛ How long does it take you to write a fic, or a chapter? Eheh. Eheheheh. Ahahaha. Well. Um. Gosh, is it getting hot in here, or is that just me? Haha... Uh. The answer is "way too long," and I apologize deeply for that.

💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart? The WIPs that I have yet to finish. They break my heart every minute of every day. Other than that, no - if I get a good emotional moment I'm more likely to be pleased with it than anything.

🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them. Ooh, a sweet voice headcanon...I like the idea that it can be used to bleed off emotion. So if Benrey's angry, he can sing out a line of sweet voice and it'll drain a bunch of the anger and make him more clear-headed. This is also a reason why he's very monotone and calm most of the time - he's emptying a lot of emotion.

I don't have a lot of surprise plot twists or things like that, but I don't mind dragging the angst just that little bit further than necessary if I can...

💞 Who's your comfort character? Right now, it gotta be Wolfstar. Either of them. Both of them. There are so many different aspects of them depending on the mood I'm in so yes, they always help.

🤯 What's a genre you struggle with as a writer (ex. romance, action, etc.)? Humour. I know I've said that in another ask game at some point, but I wish I was funnier, haha. Also action scenes are hard.

not really. i write mostly when i can and inspiration strikes. with my schedule writing is more similar to a risk sport than i'd like to admit.

💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?

oh boy. i write mostly angst, of course there are fics of mine that've broken my heart. more than i can list here. but i will give you something different. i'll give you my most personal fic ever: from wedding bells to private hells (to fresh new starts and wish you wells) 

this fic has been the most difficult story i've ever written. and it remains my all-time favorite of mine.

🎃 Do you write fics for certain holidays? Which is your favorite holiday inspired fic?

i try to! but, once again, schedules and writing don't go well together. i usually write more for christmas as it's my favorite holiday in the whole world. i love my while you were sleeping malex au fic: give me the world

This is a great question whose answer I am not sure about! Definitely feelings, focusing on a moment in time and getting everything I can out of it, and fluffy domesticity. I'm probably missing obvious things here.

Hooboy, do I--and it's always for little, unimportant details, like the types of powdered pigments one could find in the medieval era or what kind of mushrooms would grow in a certain climate. 🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

just write, baby <3 you'll get better as you write more. it doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be what you want to write. if you can find someone to squeal with about it, who can encourage you, all the better. but truly, honestly, the best advice i can give is to just do it, and keep doing it, and to write what YOU want to write, not what you think people want to read.

😬 Which of your fics would you be most horrified for friends, family, or coworkers to stumble upon?

my friends can read whatever they want; they know what they've gotten themselves into. a few of them might be a little freaked out about rpf, but other than that, if they want to read it, that's fine. one of my best friends has read a bunch of my fic.

my coworkers and family - no. just. none of it. i don't care if it's the fluffiest sweetest shit i've ever written, but no. absolutely not. none of those people need to know i have an ao3 account. the horrors.

it would be really hard to pick the most horrifying, but a lot of my family is still catholic (or some flavor of christian) so maybe the priest!sid/demo!geno fic?? 😬😂
