I just remembered that Cassian sat across from Mor sipping tea while she talked about how Nesta should be in a dungeon or being tortured by being locked up in hewn city and he’s just there blown the fuck away by Mor’s beauty AND THEN LATER she winnows to Illyria where Cassian is training, ogles him and talks to Nesta about how she’ll never deserve him and how attractive he is

Nesta stood up for Cassian during the high lord meeting, in front of EVERYBODY and he can’t take his family aside and tell them to stop starting fights with her? He’ll stand in front of Mor when Eris is around but sit by and do nothing when Rhys threatens Nesta’s life?

He. Does. Not. Love. Her. Funny also that his attitude changed toward her after the war when she was taking other men to her bed. Sjm made her sleep around out of character so that nessian can have hate sex but sjm still virtue signals feminism as if Cassian in acowar wasn’t calling her sweetheart and Cassian in acomaf didn’t wipe away her tears in front of the queens and everyone. He promised her time together as his would-be last words. But then sjm writes that Nesta uses sex to cope and now all-of-a-sudden Cassian is telling her that everybody fucking hates her and that he never asked to be shackled to her. Making it clear she can only use sex as a coping mechanism if it’s sex WITH HIM.

Suddenly he’s not understanding. Suddenly he isn’t gentle with her. No, now he’s an incel who locks Nesta up until she caves and sleeps with him.

It’s hard to imagine a being with wings, who flies in the air, would want to confine his MATE to a house she can’t escape from. Azriel, too, was locked up as a boy and then acts as a prison guard against her? And for Feyre to be the one to do it when she was supposedly traumatized when Tamlin locked her in his mansion? I understand why elain packed her clothes and sent her on her way— she’s the type to save herself and if she sided with Nesta she’d be locked up alongside her.

I’m just saying, ACOSF is a lot to unpack and I’m still processing my shock and disgust years later. I truly can’t believe it happened.

None of the IC were aware of feysand’s death pact, which is the main reason they did what Rhysand ordered and didn’t tell Feyre that her pregnancy would be fatal. They don’t care about her outside of who she is to him. If he was willing to step aside and let his mate die while birthing the heir to his court, they didn’t care either.

i don't expect everybody in acotar to make good decisions all the time. It's more interesting when they make morally grey choices or make mistakes. My issue is that sjm bends over backwards to explain actually they can never do anything wrong and if anybody was hurt by their actions, they are more evil so it was deserved.

#i'd rather rhys dealt with the fallout of working with amarantha #and making amends rather than woops a secret daemati did it #feyre actually taking accountability for killing andras and the fae UtM #azriel pushing back against rhys and asking why he has to torture #his friends being more vocal about their discomfort with that side of him #nesta not needing to redeem herself every single book because she's obviously evil

I have a serious question, if rhysand was written as more of a highly accomplished general in the NC with the inner circle being his merry band of sworn siblings he met in the armies rather than the highest authority of his court, how much of his behavior (SA not included) would be moderately more ...reasonable?

there isn't a day in my life after I read acowar where I am not mad about the stupid death bargain between feysand (at least when the universe decided to remind me that it exists, like today. after I read about it again in a fic. it gave me flashbacks. bad ones)

..... is it romantic? YES. GODDAMN. IT'S SO FUCKING ROMANTIC!!!! YOU DIE I DIE??? SIGN ME THE FUCK UPPPPP!!!!!

BUT IT'S ALSO SO FUCKING STUPID IT HURTS ME TO THE CORE OF MY SOUL. like. like. Fey I could understand. she's 20. TWENTY. tf does she knows about leading a whole court of another species? she barely lives as a fae for one year. I won't be fooled into thinking she knows enough on how to basically run a country (hell, nesta probably knows more about running something since she's the first born daughter, mama Archeron probably taught her how to run the household, that's more than what fey would know.)

fey is 20 something, she just saw her mate dies in front of her, that's traumatizing. I get it. she wouldn't want to go through that again. emotions are thick so common sense would take a back seat in that situation. BUT RHYSAND???? 500+ YEARS OLD? who's probably been a high lord for more than half of it?? YOU'RE A LEADER BRO. YOU DON'T THINK TYING YOUR LIFE TO SOMEONE ELSE COULD BE CATASTROPHIC???? like.... did he not think of his court, of his people, the very same ones he wanted to protect so bad he'd become amarantha's whore, when making that bargain? what if one day both the high lord and high lady dies. THEN WHAT??? so baffling.

why is that bargain even written in the first place, what is its purpose for the plot progression? Sarah could've just write a hot and steamy feysand post-we-died-but-not-really-war sex and be done with it without the stupid bargain.

almost ruined the ship for me... and then SJM pulled the pregnancy bs. and that was that. that severed any love i had for canon feysand. I love Feyre. I love Rhys. but them together*? no thanks🙏🏼

and that is all. I just... I read a fic with this death bargain mentioned. and now I'm having flashbacks of being 19, stressed out of my mind for finals, and thinking I could find joy and relax when I finally had time to read acowar. only to find out about the bargain. and then acosf happened and..... I haven't touch any books SJM released ever since lmao. I was that betrayed😭

Anyone ever laugh when re-reading human Feyre scenes with Rhys?😂 — because she has 0 shields, and no wonder Rhys knew they were mates… she literally hits on him every other line, even when unintentional… I mean, she actually thinks “the most beautiful man I’d ever seen” the first time/line they meet (as he later references/teases her with).

Even as a VERY traumatized High Fae with failing shields (going on a depressed monologue), she still says “Rhys- -Rhys with his smirking and sarcasm and bedroom eyes…” and NEVER manages to mention him without MAJORLY boosting his Daemati ego… no wonder his eyes “twinkled with bemusement as he beheld me.”🤣

Effloresce pov speculation: Jurian. What is he doing? Is he still in Amarantha's ring? Did Hybern dunk him in the uppity magic cookpot and he's just hanging around Spring, being a forgotten threat to fae? Also, it's so bizarre that all the fae, some who knew him personally, have forgotten how dangerous he is. He seduced Clythia, murdered her brutally, led Amarantha on a merry chase and made sure she was useless as a general until she ripped him to pieces. He did that on purpose. The Fae forgot.

JURIAN MY AXE-WIELDING MURDER MACHINE HEART OF GOLD REVOLUTIONARY HERO!

Okay, I'm going to try not to spoil too too much, because Jurian has like, his own whole thing going in Effloresce. I looked at canon and said, actually, that man is fascinating.

Effloresce!Jurian is the same age as canon Jurian but ONLY chronologically.

(The ring is SUCH a cop out in canon- if the Cauldron can resurrect from a single body part, no important fae would be dying?? Or staying dead? If someone had the power to TRAP THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE DEAD, surely we'd...hear more about it? We got a whole magic horse biography in acosf for some reason, but JURIAN? No information. He is...sane after being trapped in a ring for five centuries? Comes out of that ring, and Hybern assumes he's been...tortured into submission? IS ON THEIR SIDE?)

There's three big things here that I'm playing with- one, Jurian REMEMBERS human slavery. He remembers the world he fought to destroy and the birth of the next. He remembers what ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

Two, while I reject the ring/Amarantha premise, I think it's basically impossible to believe the fae, who are immortal, would let a mortal (ish) man who'd killed some of their most powerful just have a peaceful life after the war.

SIDEBAR: They're not in the story, but I have HUGE Miriyam/Dracon HATE. They're just...in hiding? forever? On an island no one kind find? They could have been SO COOL but the vibe is so much more commune turned cult. WHY ON EARTH would they get the Cauldron, Prythian's sacred vessel of creation? They're not EVEN FROM PRYTHIAN

Three, he's an even louder metaphor for Feyre's total mental shift. Humans meet Jurian and go: JURIAN? OUR JURIAN? Feyre has like, a second of wonder before being like: BUT HE MURDERED HIS GIRLFRIEND RHYS SAYS HE'S A MONSTER. She, like most faeries, seems to think fae are inherently better. That their lives matter more. Clythia killed all her slaves rather than free them, but we're supposed to think Jurian's espionage is the gross part? Compared to whatever shit the fae were up to???

Jurian's basically a walking neon sign that reads HIGH FAE ARE DANGEROUS TO HUMANS AND KILL THEIR OWN DESCENDANTS, wrapped up in the courtly manners of a bygone era, errant knighting about trying to help humans, seething beyond belief that the crowns his people fought to create have allied with their greatest enemies.

(Also I gave him a sexy murderous girlfriend with a bad attitude. because. canon didn't even give the mercenary a NAME. Also his beef with Miriyam sucking being attributed to jealousy is such a ridiculous reduction. It's not that she didn't choose HIM, she fell in love with the man who OWNED HER and fucked off forever to secret paradise while the world went to hell)

By humans, Jurian is quite literally the opposite of forgotten. Faeries made it so in their massive, unbelievable arrogance.

It wasn't till I realised how gigantic Cassian's wings are that I remembered he and Azriel are lesser Fae. They really do walk everywhere with giant wings at their back because they can't make them disappear and reappear. Giant bat wings are the Illyrian version of a tail, green skin, webbed feet or sharp teeth. They don't have super powers, they're just elves with wings (and Siphons of course, but we get the idea).

I figured Human vs Fae would be the biggest point of racism in this world but OMG how the Old Generation of Royals detest the Lesser Fae.💀 Like ah ahn, your own race again?? Lucien's execution was ordered cause he insisted on marrying one. Rhys' father was furious too.

It was bad enough that he found out his mate was Lesser Fae. Bad enough that he'd decided he'd take the risk with a hybrid child and raise Rhys so strong and cold enough to withstand the hate he'd been born into. Then he sends his son off to training and Rhys comes back having befriended the two most infamous bastards in the entire of Illyria and was calling them "brother". Nah, Rhys' father boiled. 💀💀💀 Legit sent Cassian to the front lines of every battle and kept Azriel so busy he'd never leave his side.

(Also hypocritical about the Lesser Fae being less cause they barely pass as human).

Cassian - An orphan titled the prince of Bastards for reasons that are spoilers.

Azriel - Born from a 'mistress', speaks to shadows, mangled and scarred by his family's torture.

Baby Rhys: They are my brothers. 😌😊

His Dad, explodes with rage: Lesser born half breeds and you call them your family?! Do you think I worked this hard to raise you to perfection just for you to throw it all away.

Rhys: But they're my brothers. 😭

His Dad: They're weaknesses that's what they are. 😒I will not have you be the death of me Rhysand! Rhys: (Ends up bringing about his father's death because he befriended TAMLIN! 💀 - Real ironic. Tamlin, the pureblood High Fae, the downfall of Rhys' family.)

Chapter 8: Interlude

Summary: After nearly 40k words of Azriel, I think it's about time we saw things from Eris's point of view and got some Azris on screen :)

“Okay Vanserra, what’s wrong at home?” Declan Emmet, the Fae Aux’s resident cyber genius, asked. He was leaning against the doorframe of the armory, the bright white firstlights overhead painting him with sharp contrasts.

Eris opened his mouth, prepared to speak, but Dec rushed to add, “And don’t say ‘nothing’ because this is the fifth night in a row you’ve stayed late.”

Scowling, Eris replied, “I wasn’t going to say ‘nothing.’ I was going to explain that it isn’t something I can talk to you about right now.”

[. . .]

“Okay, so you can’t talk to me about it, but is there anything I can do to help?” Declan asked. “Do you want to grab a drink or some late dinner?”

Eris shook his head. “No, I’m alright. I’ll head out of here soon.”

He knew Dec was trying to help, but Eris simply wanted to exhaust himself during the day so that he could manage to sleep through the night in an empty apartment. The lack of his pack nearby made it difficult for his body and mind to settle.

Declan left with a pitying glance, and Eris finished cleaning his weapons in peace.

It was dark by the time he left the Aux Center and began the twenty-minute walk back to the apartment. The warmth of the day lingered in the air despite the lack of sunlight. The smells of the city mingled with those of the blooming shrubs and trees liberally scattered throughout FiRo. Cassian’s allergies, Eris thought, must be giving him Hel.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He took it out and blinked in surprise at the name on the screen. He cleared his throat and answered, “Good evening, Azriel.”
