my mother was just yelling at me about how “it’s so fucked up” that I don’t want to share all of my medical records with her anymore after trying to add herself as an emergency contact at my surgeon’s office
EXCUSE YOU. the last time you got your hands on my records you know exactly what you did. you tried to justify your neglect of me because “oh the endometriosis was in its early stages!!! there wasn’t that much!!! it couldn’t have started when you were 13, heavy periods and constant severe pain are normal after all!!!!!!”. AND THEN? you somehow have the AUDACITY to say you’re disgusted by this WHEN I WAS IN SEVERE PAIN EVERY DAY FOR YEARS AND FOR AT LEAST THE FIRST 30 MONTHS YOU KNOWINGLY DID ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL ABOUT IT? I am never subjecting myself to your bullshit again. I don’t want you anywhere near my medical records. if you keep this shit up I will make sure they can’t talk to ANYONE who can share with you. you don’t need to know everything. and I’m never going to forgive you or forget the domino effect you played such a massive part in. you ruined years of my life. FUCK. OFF.

I was 30 years old. I was married. We were happy. We were established. Our 401k runneth over. We decided to start a family. I got pregnant right away. Like right away. We were over the moon. I kept a journal of every day of the magic. I got a bump. I felt our baby kick. I embraced it fully. I rejected tests because "it won't change our path" Emily sent out baby shower invitations. The nursery was under way. And then. I'm almost halfway there! I'm 18 and a half weeks pregnant. The doctor called. It was 7pm. I was out at dinner with my friend Deb. I stepped outside. The day before on a whim I agreed to a blood test. "There's probably nothing to worry about but we need you to come in. There's a 1 in 36 chance something is wrong" I called Liza sobbing. My sister told me to lay out 36 straws and see that there's still such a good chance that everything is fine. I didn't sleep. We drove up to Forsyth because that was the first available amniocentesis. The needle was long. The room was dark. The news was really bad. I changed in that moment forever. It's a girl! We had named her Audrey. Audrey Roesel -- the girl who will make me a mom. She was missing her nasal bone. Her kidneys were tiny. Her heart was missing a chamber. She had an extra chromosome. Part of her brain wasn't formed. Her head was growing at a rate 4x faster than her limbs. I want to be a mom. This is my girl. This situation could really hurt my body. She will be in immeasurable pain. I didn't understand "incompatible with life" I cried. I cried some more. I was already a mom. Moms keep their children from pain. Time is ticking. I'm 19.5 weeks now. We are in Georgia. There's a time limit, you know. It's Labor Day now. Doctors go on vacation. Somehow the world around us keeps on. Not for me. In the interest of time… They sent me to an abortion clinic. Me. At an abortion clinic. After 20 weeks, it's illegal, you know. It's the night before. I ran a bath. I said goodbye to my daughter in that tub. Just the two of us before the world turned upside down. Did you know… You have to go 2 days in a row? 1 to dilate 1 for a D&E It was brutal emotionally. It hurt physically. I begged to be put under. A kind doctor took my hand. His hands were large and warm. He told me I would be a mom one day. He was an angel. I woke up in a group recovery room. In a recliner. Next to a young girl. Maybe 13. She was also recovering. I took her hand. My milk came in. Nobody told me. It hurt in my body and my soul. I grieved. Hard. For months and months. I held onto a teddy bear the size of a newborn. I ached everywhere inside and out. It was a fluke they said. Fast forward four months. Pregnant again. Scared. Excited. First ultrasound. Baby’s gone. Go to the hospital for D&C. This is also considered abortion. They tested the tissue. it was a boy! Chromosomes were normal. Isn’t that good news? Grief ensued. So did genetic testing B and me. I’m not ashamed. I never was. I’m what abortion looks like. So is the 13 year old girl in that recovery room.
In many states, the doctor would tell her, they could not help. They would tell her to just wait, risking her life and causing the fetus to suffer immeasurable pain. This is what Pro-life looks like now.
Access to safe abortion is a woman’s right. And abortion is a decision to be made between a woman, her doctor, her family, and her god.
…Not a majority white male cohort of politicians with a false sense of morality.

4 > For the same reason no one can fly to another “planet”;>
5 > When they talk about space and planets, they mean deep ocean and other continents accessible only via the deep ocean;>
6 > Antarctica is not a continent - it’s a giant containment ice-wall, surrounding a crater called “earth”; it’s also called the “van allen belt”;>
7 > One can leave the earth crater only deep under the ocean through gates on the bottom of the ocean and reach other continents, called “planets”;>

9 > We reside on this giant continuous terrain/realm called the “universe”;>
10 > There are many other continents, called “planets”, outside the Antarctica wall;>
11 > There are many living beings living on these continents outside the earth crater, called “aliens”;>

18 > Tartaria did exist although I believe its location is different than what we are told and also its original name is most likely different too; its descendants have survived and live outside of the “earth” crater; one thing I have been unable to confirm is whether the Tartarians are descendants/bloodlines of the Nephilim, although I do believe that is most likely the case;>
19 > Most of the aliens are manufactured synthetic robotoids;>
20 > There was a mass manufacture of human [most likely cloned] babies, therefore the sudden explosion of orphans with unknown origins in the late 1800s and early 1900s - it’s possible these were the original soulless NPC bloodlines that represent more than half of all humans today;>
21 > The “earth” is a non-rotating stationary flat realm/crater within a much larger continuous terrain/plane/realm called the “universe”;>
22 > Souled humans are being farmed as animals; the words “male” and “female” actually depict the sex of an animal, not human; in the late 1770s and early 1800s humans were only described by the words “man”, “woman”, “boy” and “girl”, and then suddenly for unknown reasons [or more likely under unknown influence], humans began to be described as female and male, which was the way only animals were described at the time;>
23 > There is more than one great flood, the question is who and what caused the more recent ones;>
24 > The Egyptian civilization is not the oldest one; the Bosnian pyramids are twice as large as the Egyptian ones and have been hidden from the world for the longest time;>
25 > In fact there are pyramids all over Europe, quite a few of them older and bigger than the Egyptian ones; even the Mexican pyramids are older than the Egyptian ones - there has been a concerted effort to hide a vast amount of history from us;>
26 > I come from a tribe that is 2500 years old, one of the oldest in Europe; I have the feeling that we will discover that a significant part of the Egyptian and Babylonian history is fabricated.>

Interview with Jupp Heynckes about Thomas Müller
By: Kicker
Tumblr media
Mr. Heynckes, Thomas Müller scored for FC Bayern for the 499th time in an official match in the recent Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg. He has 235 goals and 264 assists. You knew this player as a coach in Munich from April 28 to June 30, 2009 and in the two seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13. Why does Müller stand out?
To judge this player and appreciate his record, you have to see the full picture of Thomas Müller. Thomas is a traveler between worlds on the football field, which means that he is neither a striker nor a defensive midfielder, but an attacking midfielder endowed with a special goal-scoring instinct and a gift that is granted to very few players: he has a fundamental endurance and exceptional speed. This combination has always distinguished him physically. Moreover, he is an absolute team player who always and without exception puts himself at the service of the team.
Does this also characterize Müller as a person?
Yes, he is authentic, sympathetic, empathetic, funny, original with his sayings, optimistic, positive and able to lead. Thomas doesn't duck away in awkward moments, he always faces up and has a clear, decided opinion on football and the circumstances in a team. That's why I've always spoken highly of Thomas Müller, because he's an exceptional player, not only because of his footballing qualities, but also because of his personality. I like to compare him with my former teammate Hacki Wimmer, who was just as strong a midfielder as Thomas at Borussia Mönchengladbach and also gave everything for the team. He was self-sacrificing on the defensive end, moving forward, but not as goal-threatening as Thomas. Today, Thomas is a mature professional who knows for himself when he has played well and not so well, when he needs to be critical or hold back publicly. He is now in the late autumn of his career, which is quite normal when you have 300,000 kilometers in your legs and are 34 years old.
Tumblr media
Thomas Müller describes himself as an Raumdeuter. Does he have this particular feel for a promising goal situation?
Yes, he intuitively recognizes situations in the game that could be dangerous for a goal. A strong runner and hard worker, he also goes where he thinks he needs to be present and finishes. With his now very good eye, he has great peripheral vision, plus calmness on the ball, so he plays precise passes and hits very good crosses. Thomas doesn't stand out as a footballing giant, but his overall image could be of a great painter like the Italian Rafael.
What was Thomas Müller like in personal interactions?
He was always accessible in communication, ready to talk and receptive. He understands football as a game, recognizes currents in a team and sees through the mechanisms outside. With Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm, he mediated within the team and forced self-cleaning processes before the coach had to take action. It's a gift when you have players like that as a coach.
Tumblr media
In the Bundesliga, Müller, who made his debut in a 2-2 draw with Hamburger SV on August 15, 2008, has recorded 200 assists and 144 goals in 448 matches and 33,089 minutes, he needs 96 minutes for a scoring point, so he manages to score or set up a goal in almost every league match. How is this consistency possible?
First, he was very rarely injured, so he had continuity in his career. Then he has the ability to anticipate, he foresees developments on the pitch. When Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben used to go off on the wings or Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry or Leroy Sané do it today, Thomas sprints off from deep or instinctively adapts his position to requirements when he's already in the penalty area, he goes into the five-meter area or pulls back from there toward the penalty spot. He also likes to orient himself towards the second post. He has this behavior down pat and has also perfected it. Thomas has it all in his blood.
Under you as coach, Müller scored 47 goals in 135 appearances over 9754 minutes, plus 53 assists, making exactly 100 scorer points. Where did you see his ideal position?
Thomas is a highly intelligent player whom I used mainly as a forward midfielder or second striker. He could also play on the right side and accepted this role without grumbling. He got to grips with this task and then came through there as well. The optimal place for him was behind the striker.
Müller set up by far the most goals for Robert Lewandowski: 64, including 48 in the Bundesliga. Why did Müller and Lewandowski harmonize so well?
It worked so well with Thomas and Robert Lewandowski because Lewy recognized and sensed exactly when he needed to break away from his opponent - at the precise moment when the ball had left Thomas' foot, and never before. This interplay was based on the intuition of the two, it was blind understanding. Thomas hit the crosses exactly the way Lewy needed them: the striker had to go forward, run or sprint into the crosses or put-ins, often with prior backward body deception.
Tumblr media
Were Müller and Lewandowski the most effective striker duo in Bundesliga history?
Every time is different. Of course, they were a great pair, but Thomas played just as efficiently with Mario Gomez or Mario Mandzukic. However, Lewy has already benefited a lot from Thomas.
Tumblr media
Under Pep Guardiola, Müller collected at least 40 scorer points in every game, and in 2015/16 his best mark was 45. Does Müller need more space for his game or does it help him more when things are tight up front?
When Thomas has space, that's an advantage for him because he's also very fast. But since he is a very skilled player, he knows how to adjust to all conditions. In general, he moves very well thanks to his immense running strength and is always playable. When he comes under pressure there, he doesn't take the ball but just lets it clatter. His passes have the right sharpness and precision, they also get onto the right foot of the teammate - many professionals lack this gift. Thomas plays simple football, not fancy.
87 scorer points are the best score for a German player in the Champions League. FC Barcelona is the foreign club against which Müller scored the most points. In nine duels, he scored eight goals and served to two goals. In the semifinal before winning the title in 2013, Müller scored the 1-0 and 4-0 at home, and he set up the 3-0 by Mario Gomez. In the second leg, he scored the 3:0. What does this data say about Müller's international class?
For Thomas, the games in the Champions League were always highlights, and he saw the duels with Real Madrid or FC Barcelona as a major challenge. His special motivation was there to be felt. He knew how to adapt to his opponents, and he knew exactly when he needed to be even more focused. That's why this international top score comes as no surprise to me.
Was he nervous at any point?
No. Rather highly concentrated and well prepared, tense. Anyone who has been German champion twelve times like Thomas is no longer nervous.
Tumblr media
Did you see Müller more as the final provider or the enforcer?
I have always seen the whole football player Thomas Müller, both elements for the offense distinguish. In addition, he was always driven by an immense will to perform, the utmost professionalism. Even if he exudes a certain lightness on the outside, in truth he is totally focused. That's why I always had such a high opinion of him.
Müller scored 149 of his 235 goals with his right foot, and he also scored with his chest - against Bochum in 2009/10 - or with his left upper arm against Hannover in the 2013/14 Cup. Is Müller underestimated because of his sometimes seemingly clumsy movements?
What I said before about him as a footballer makes any answer to this question superfluous.
Müller didn't have it easy with every coach. Did you also have doubts about him at times?
I never had any doubts about Thomas Müller. I got to know him in 2009. Back then, we still managed to reach the Champions League in the six weeks we worked together at the end of the season. After the season, we played six friendly matches, six days in a row. Thomas played every one of those games. It was amazing. After that, I transferred to Bayer Leverkusen and called Hermann Gerland in Munich and said, "Hermann, I want Thomas." Hermann replied, "You're crazy. I've already talked to Louis van Gaal and told him that Thomas is a good kid we have to promote." I then dropped the courting of Thomas.
Tumblr media
Müller was never Footballer of the Year. Is his value not appreciated accordingly?
Has he really never been Germany's football player of the year?
Never.
That is an oversight on the part of the jury. I would like to join this group (laughs), my vote would go to Thomas. He would have deserved this award 100 percent. For me, he is exceptional and one of the best players in the history of FC Bayern, which is rich in great players and to which he has been loyal throughout his career. It is a gift for any club to have such a player. I have always held him in immense esteem, Thomas Müller is unique. What he has achieved in football so far is a magnificent, admirable lifetime achievement. And once he steps off the big football stage, I will miss him. When he plays, Thomas is always an eye-catcher. There will never be another player like him: Just as there will be no more Franz Beckenbauer or Gerd Müller, there will be no more Thomas Müller.

I'm going to preface this by saying I never had any big investment in R, L, or E outside of the general intrigue or mystery, etc. however, I do remember years ago the first time I thought to myself, "Wow, this fandom is dumb as hell" was when people were honestly trying to argue (and still do!) that we can't know if E was hurt/humiliated by being passed over for a 15 year old in front of all the most important noblemen in Westeros at a public tourney because GRRM didn't explicitly say what her reaction was.
I'm sorry, but GRRM is not some accessible YA fantasy author who is going to write everything out in crayon. There are a lot of things in these books that won't and should not need explicit explaining because GRRM assumes his readers have the mental capacity of at minimum a 15 year old who has had some basic exposure to the medieval ages. Understanding that a wife would be humiliated at her husband crowing his would be mistress at a tourney over her is something I, and Martin, would expect a 13 year old to Sherlock Holmes they were into understanding. Make no mistake, a lot of these people are fully aware it was fucked up and she was humiliated, but are being intellectually dishonest/arguing in bad faith to push agendas. But I do think a large swath of these individuals are also just really that dumb which explains why now we have big chunk of the fandom not understanding why trying to put bastards on a medieval throne is deeply destabilizing and not some 'Girl Boss, Sexually Liberating' move that everyone should applaud.
I don't think people need a PhD in medieval studies to discuss these books/shows, but actually having a baseline understanding of this world and the middle ages in general is actually pretty important especially if they feel the need to clog the tags with braindead metas and hot takes.
You’re absolutely right on all accounts - I agree that some people just want to act dense because they don’t want their favs to look bad.
Even Daenerys Targaryen herself who didn’t grow up in Westeros and hero worships the brother she never met - asks if Elia treated Rhaegar horribly? Because to her Elia being awful to Rhaegar would atleast sorta justify his humiliation of Elia at Harrenhal.

"A husband waits outside
A crying child pushes a child into the night"
I want to talk a little about this line, because this is the beginning of this song and it was a punch in the gut. I grew up on a very poor area, and it was also a very christian area, and i was one of the only girls in my neighborhood that celebrated my 20th birthday without a baby, all of my highschool friends were teen moms, my neighbor is a 17 year old girl who has 4 kids, she had her first when she was 13, the baby-father at the time was 20, none of them finished their education, they couldn't, they need to take care of their kids, the fathers have 0 obligations with their child, a lot of them moved on and are now married to somebody else, they don't suffer the consequences, but the girls have to endure the pain, they have to drop everything to take care of someone else and have this responsibility that they don't understand it, a lot of them died during childbirth, they have no ambition, they receive no help, they don't have any opportunities, they don't finish their education, nothing, their life it's over before even starts. That's how it's like to live on a country where sex-ed it's not available, access to internet or any form of information is ver difficult, safe abortion is limited or forbidden and religion fanatics rule the country. It's having to see news about kids who are 10-15 years old birthing babies that only exist because of rape, it's watching girls losing every single chance of having a good life because they didn't get enough education or the proper help. It's hearing people saying to kids who were raped and end up being pregnant, that they have to wait a little, because God doesn't want for them to have a abortion because it's "sinful".
I'm begging people to actually listen to what Hozier is trying to say, it's okay to joke about him being this forest creature, but there is a time for that, please pay attention to what is happening in this world, pay attention to what and why people are fighting for, this song made me feel so fucking heavy and angry about everything. Just stop for a moment and actually listen to what he's saying.

The homestuck age poll rb is crazy because Im pretty sure i got into homestuck sometime in 2015 when i was 12, waaaaaaay too young to be reading it. I think the comic was definitely aimed at young adults for the obvious reasons of the amount of cursing and sexual humor. Homestuck always reminded me of sitting at a school lunch table, a bunch of not so supervised kids hanging out doing whatever. But I think homestuck is written more as a reminisce of childhood rather than living through it of you catch my drift. I think thats why it was such a massive appeal to different age groups, older and younger audiences find it relatable and entertaining. But then again i remember picking up a physical copy of the book and it apparently said it was rated +16, like ok if you say so
Yeah, I agree that it's written more from a perspective of nostalgia for childhood than as something kids are necessarily meant to read. Which amusingly results in a comic whose main characters are "too young" to read it if you go by the rating, haha.
And honestly, I think that 16+ sounds like about the right rating for it. Like, I'm not gonna say kids SHOULDN'T be reading Homestuck, because I definitely read some pretty "adult" books at that age.* But I think it's more appropriate for older teens than for, well, 12-year-olds.
Really, I'm pretty sure the original intended audience -- or at least expected audience -- were people who were in their 20s when Homestuck first started in 2009. Probably people who grew up playing text-based and point-and-click adventure games. People who had lots of nostalgia for 80s movies. People with online friends that they communicated with over AOL Instant Messenger, which Pesterchum is an obvious pastiche of.
Because, really, a lot of the references characters make throughout the comic are to media from Hussie's childhood, rather than media that someone who was 13 in 2009 would have been likely to care about. The entire conceit of MSPA in general, where the audience (and later some imagined reader/player) is giving "commands" to the characters, is based off of old school adventure games. And especially in early Homestuck, Hussie made no real effort to make the comic accessible to people who aren't at least passingly familiar with most of that stuff I mentioned.
So I think it says a lot about Homestuck's strengths that it evolved to appeal to all sorts of people outside of that original demographic! That even if a lot of the references go over your head, there's still so much to like about the characters and the plot and the world that it doesn't even matter. That's really cool, I think.
* Based on the title, the Schrödinger's Cat trilogy sounded right up 12-year-old-me's alley. How was I supposed to know how obscenely raunchy it was? Turned out it was bad enough that I quickly decided I wasn't old enough for it and came back to it a couple years later (which was arguably still too young for a book where a major subplot revolves around a character's severed penis)

G. Stilton x Beastars crossover let’s goooooo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways always been interested how this crossover would go.
So this crossover would be more on the mice and how they live their day to day lives as they are one of the smallest animals to walk in that world.
Rarely exceeding 30 centimetres and have an average lifespan of 43 years, they are neglected by society as they don’t live for that long and are easily killed by one wrong step.
In this crossover, we focus on a peculiar family of mice as they are only known by name but never been seen by any official.
This family runs an extremely popular newspaper showcasing the latest news and trends as well as exclusive interviews with celebrities.
Though what is unique about this newspaper is that the majority of their workforce are mice but they are hidden from the public’s eyes so from the outside, the majority of their hires are herbivores.
Why are the mice hidden from public eyes? Well the family also dabbles in investigatory work as the mice they train are the best in the field.
They are trained to sniff out information from black markets, disable weaponry and electronics, and take down enemies.
They are also the only mice in the country to have access to technology small enough for them carry, which also makes them even harder to detect during the job itself.
This technology is key to how this mouselet is able to survive in his school.
Only about 15 centimetres at 6 years old, Benjamin needs to be careful of where he goes and how he does it as mice are a rarity in Cherryton Academy as he has yet to grow into his adult height.
(Seeing as they only live for 43 years, I assume that they age twice as fast and that means Benjamin is about 12-13 years old)
After a few weeks, he managed to gain the friendship of a cat named Elias due to them having similar class schedules and being seat partners.
Elias is a 14-year-old cat of the Russian Blue Breed, he is around 92 centimetres tall and has a thin athletic build due to his time in the sports club.
He showed Benjamin around the school on his first day and they steadily became good friends over the next few weeks even though he has some complaints of Benjamin’s cheery airhead personality.
While Elias is glad that he is not afraid of huge carnivores, he often wishes the mouse is more aware of where he is walking as he often has to save the tiny mouse from getting squashed by unaware carnivores.
His worry now multiplied tenfold due to a predation incident in the school and the animals have to be separated and investigated as the predator evaded the school security and is now hidden among them.
And during this time, Benjamin is given a mission by his family member that leads the newspaper in which he is the one who should uncover the truth behind the predation incident as the principal refuses to speak to the reporters.
Will he be successful or will he also become the next victim? Who knows!

Normally Switch City tales are patreon exclusive, and when I'm not laying in bed dying come out once a month. As I am currently laying on my death bed been hard to write and get things done so patreon has been paused pretty much all year. You can still pledge $1 to get access to all the old Switch City stories. And once Patreon opens again, for $5 you can add your OC into the pool of characters to be used for the stories and sign up for stories that interest you once they start up again.
In the meantime, I owe a substantial word count to people, wasn't able to do 13 Tales, my usual annual Halloween series this year or last, so this seemed like a nice bonus I could offer patrons to cash in word counts on if they wanted to be part of this series, or save their stored word counts for other stories they wanted, as well as a way to introduce the world of Switch City to people outside patreon who may not know it exists.
What is Switch City? A city built on a nexus point in the multiverse. As a result, the walls of reality bend and people constantly slip into other universes in Reality Shifts due to thin these boundaries are, and suddenly find themselves in strange and often radically different worlds.
So basiclaly it's an isekai series with each story taking place in a different universe version of Switch City and an excuse for lots of transformation and shenanigans.
Without further ado, tonight's tale. Zach, trying to drive to the grovery store undergoes a Reality Shift and finds himself at an abanadoned festival full of delicious food instead. Aware that thi is suspicious as heck, he decides to get out of there, but leaving may not be as easy as he wants. And is that truly want he wants?
Special thanks to @lockelyfox who has been helping me with edits while I'm sick and barely hanging in here.
And now, our feature presentation.
Tales From Switch City
Zach’s Tale
By CalexTheNeko
Switch city: a strange place built on a Nexus between worlds.
There are an infinite number of universes and timelines, and an infinite number of versions of yourself. Under normal conditions you would remain oblivious to these other timelines, unable to ever enter or witness them. But, where there is a nexus, and the walls between realities are thin, it is possible to cross over even without knowing it.
These events are called reality shifts, and occur quite often,  yet most people don’t even notice it, for many timelines are quite similar. For example, you may crossover into a timeline where back in the third grade your favorite color was red instead of blue. A difference between your realities to be sure, but one that may not have had any major impact on your life, and as a result nothing would be discernibly different when you entered your new reality. However, some timelines are radically different. Some have magic, some have advanced technology, and some are so distinct that your imagination could not even conceive of their very nature. And so, sometimes you may find yourself in a reality that is unfamiliar, with rules that don’t make any sense, and there is seldom an easy way back.
Zach was a young man with messy pale brown hair, sporting smart glasses on his face, and dressed comfortably in a hoodie and jeans. Today he was simply running to the grocery store. A very mundane task that suddenly became anything but. Zach had no way of knowing that a reality shift had occurred, but it was clear there was a problem when the asphalt roads were suddenly replaced by dirt roads and the grocery store that should have been just around the bend was replaced by some kind of festival.
His first assumption was that he had somehow turned onto the wrong road, and simply wound up at some local fairgrounds instead of the store. But as he looked through his rearview mirror of his car, he saw a thick forest behind him that he had not driven through on his way here. It was highly doubtful that he would have driven straight through the woods without noticing. Though he might occasionally get lost in his thoughts, no one was that absent minded. So what was the logical conclusion? Was this a dream, or maybe a stress induced vision? Who could say? Either way this clearly wasn’t the grocery store.
He decided the best thing to do would be to try to drive back the way he had come in the hope that he might see something familiar. But, as he shifted his car into reverse, the engine stalled and refused to work. Then all the electronic displays in his car turned off. It was as if everything in the car had died all at once, leaving him stranded here.
He  pulled out his cell phone to try to call his roommate to come pick him up. It would likely be a challenge to explain where he was, since he didn’t know himself, but it was a challenge he would never have to face. Much like his car, his cell phone was completely dead and would not power on. This was bad, but not impossible to resolve. If there was a festival going on, there had to be people here somewhere, and surely he could find someone who would let him borrow a phone so that he could call and get a ride. Worst cast, they would at least be able to tell him where he was so he could give his roommate accurate directions.
Zach got out of the car and walked into the festival grounds. Rather than aisles of groceries, there were various food stands. In place of the produce section, he could see rows of carnival games. And where the store’s ‘Employee Only’ stock rooms should be was instead stages for various shows. Yet, despite the fact that there was obviously an ongoing festival, there was not a soul to be found except for Zach himself. He was greeted by the alluring aroma of delicious food. There were all kinds of different dishes many he did not recognize but it was clear most of them seem to be of Asian origin. He saw plenty of stands selling various forms of noodles and rice including ramen as well as dumplings and mochi based sweets. The scent was heavenly and torturous at the same time. He suddenly felt as if he was starving and the food became the most tempting thing in the world.
“Hello?” He called out as he looked around the stands. “Is anyone here? Is someone running any of these stands?” Zach’s question was met with only silence. There was no one to purchase food from, and yet all the food was freshly made as if it was sitting there just for him to eat.
The lack of people around was unsettling to say the least. Despite the fact that he could not see anyone, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was being watched. He felt the hair stand up on the back of his neck, but the allure of the food seemed to be overpowering his hesitation. It was almost as if it was magically beckoning him to eat it.
“Nope!” He exclaimed as he turned around and started to walk back towards his car. People did not just stumble across empty festivals with food made just for them. He’d seen this movie before. With no idea what this was, or why it was here, it would be a violation of the most basic rules of common sense to just eat food simply sitting out. For all he knew, the food could be poisonous or drugged in some manner. Even if it wasn’t, the food couldn’t possibly be intended for him. He wasn’t a thief, and he was too smart to fall for some nefarious plot.
As he made his way back to the car, the trees surrounding him began to wrestle and sway. Something was coming. He tried to quickly get into his car but found that the doors had somehow locked themselves. That would, of course, be ridiculous, so he thought he must have just hit the lock button on his fob by instinct when he left it. Strange that  it still worked while everything else in the car had failed, but maybe that meant his car wasn’t completely dead. He might even be able to get it going and get out of here, wherever ‘here’ was. However, as he pressed the unlock button, the doors refused to unlock. So the key fob was also dead. Well, he still had the key!. He quickly placed that into the door handle and turned… and it snapped in half.
“Oh come on! That doesn’t even make sense!” Zach threw his hands up in the air in disbelief. There hadn’t even been any resistance when he turned it, it simply snapped inside the lock. Now he was going to need a lockpick to come out, or get the car towed! This was unbelievable. No, something strange was clearly going on. He reconsidered his earlier thought that this might be a dream, but everything felt so real. As if the problem with his car wasn’t bad enough, the rustling from the trees was getting louder. Whatever was out there was getting closer. Zach continued to try to turn the remnants of the key in the lock, pulling on the car handle to try and open the car, but it wouldn’t work. Should he run? Hide? If so, where could he even go? Behind his car was far too obvious, and it wasn’t as if the festival stands were going to provide any better cover. He briefly considered smashing his window when out of the blue, they arrived.
“Congratulations!”
Several pointed ears popped out of the brush cheering in voices that Zach could understand. The strangest part was that he knew that they were not speaking English, and yet somehow he was able to understand their foreign words. “You’re the first mortal in over two centuries to pass this test.” A golden fox with nine tails spoke as it walked out of the brush in front of the others and approached him. “For your ability to resist the temptation of taking that which belongs to the spirits, you deserve a reward.”
“Talking… foxes....” Zach muttered, as he stared at the golden fox in front of him. Specifically, he was focused on its nine luxurious tails. “So fluffy...” Without another thought in his head,  he reached out a hand to try to pet one of the captivating, soft-looking appendages.
“Ah yes, they are remarkable, and quite fluffy.” The fox responded, clearly amused by the situation. He allowed Zach to touch one of his tails without resisting. “It was our intention to invite you to partake of the feast with us, and join in our celebrations as a reward for your temperance. But, based on your reaction, I suspect there is a different reward that you might find suitable.”
Zach felt a gentle, comforting warmth flow from the tail he was touching. It traveled through his hand and into his entire body as easily as water flows gently down a stream. In moments, it almost  felt like his body was covered in a soft, warm, fur coat. It was at this point that he realized that the clothing he was wearing was starting to feel uncomfortable and itchy. He looked down at himself. The sensation of being  covered in fur wasn’t just internal; he literally was covered in fur now, or at least starting to be. Brown fur was growing in patches all across his body, making his clothing more and more uncomfortable. Without thinking, he quickly took off his shirt and breathed  a sigh of relief as some of the discomfort was relieved. In his shoes, however, was where he was experiencing he most unpleasantness. It was almost painful.
He quickly dropped to the ground and pulled his shoes off just in time to see a set of small, sharp claws rip through the edges of his socks. He attempted to remove them, but  they couldn’t maintain their structure as his feet were now changing shape. They were extending, covered in brown fur, and, surprising absolutely no one, and to many a people’s delight, he had cute little toe beans!. It wasn’t difficult to figure out what was going on at this point. While some people might have been terrified by the fact they were turning into some kind of animal, and others might have gone into denial, all Zach could feel was a sense of ecstasy.
Having a pretty good idea of what was going to come next, Zach quickly pulled his remaining clothing off. The lower half of his body had already finished covering itself in fur, and now the tip of his tailbone was extending outward, rapidly forming into a tail. With a quiet ‘fwish’, the single tail split into three, which then all in turn split into three more, giving  him a total of nine tails. Rushing upward from the base, the fur filled in thick on each and every one, making it just as fluffy as the kitsune before him.
It was at this point that Zach's glasses fell right off of his face. He tried to catch them, but as he extended his hands he saw that they were hands no more.  He was instead flexing vulpine paws without opposable thumbs. Without a way to actually manipulate them and put them back on, they simply fell to the dirt, leaving him wondering why they had even fallen off in the first place. As he reached his new paws up to touch his face, the answer came quickly. In fact, he was surprised he hadn’t noticed it sooner! The front of his face had pushed out into a long, pointed snout which intruded into his vision. There was no doubt what had caused them to be pushed off of his face. As he further inspected his changes, he also found that his ears were not where they should have been. Instead, they were now much larger, triangular in shape and had relocated themselves to the top of his head.
The changes were complete.
From an outside perspective, there was no trace of humanity left in Zach, other than his blue irises. For all intents and purposes, he was now a normal fox. Except, of course, for the fact that he had nine tails.
“Whoa!?” He tried to stand and quickly fell over. His brain had not yet realized that he was quadrupedal, and couldn’t stand on two legs anymore. He readjusted, cautiously trying to stand once more, this time on four legs. “This is so cool...” His nine tails began to swish from side to side, and as he did, a wisp of fire lit on the tip of each tail. He looked astonished as he realized that he had created fox fire, and he focused, bringing his tails together as the motes of fire all joined together into one the size of a basketball. Flashing a mischievous grin, he started to wonder what other magic he could do. But the thought quickly turned to concern as he realized he had no idea how to extinguish the flames.
“Uh, a little help here- I think I might have made a mistake?” He pleaded, looking at the golden kitsune who had granted him this boon.
“Oh dear. Perhaps I was a bit too hasty in my assessment of your initial capabilities.” The golden fox lifted up a paw, quickly pushing it against Zach’s nose. In an instant the fire went out. But not only that, the golden fox appeared to grow larger.
That wasn’t quite correct. Everything around him was getting bigger. But, far more alarming than that was the fact that his tails were slowly disappearing one by one. That wasn’t fair, he liked having multiple tails! Sure, before today he hadn’t even had one, but now he knew the joy of having multiple. With that amount of fluff, he could have curled them up and used them as a bed for a nap if he wanted to. But as he continued to shrink, his tails continued to vanish until he had only a single one left, and he found the golden fox towering over him. He tried to speak up, to object to this gross tail-based injustice, but instead of his complaints, he only produced a series of yips and yaps instead.
“Relax, little one.” The kitsune chuckled. “You’ll get all nine of them back in time.” He curled his own tails around him as he sat on his haunches, looking down at the smaller fox. “It occurred to me that giving a human the power of a fully grown kitsune may have been a slightly daft idea. That is far too much firepower, both literally and metaphorically, without the experience or understanding necessary to make use of it.” He lifted his paw and lightly bapped Zach on his head, “So I reduced your form to that of a kit. You’ve spent, what, twenty summers as a human? That’s basically an infant in our comparatively longer lifespan, so this form is more appropriate. Do not fret, you’ll still be capable  of a little bit of magic as you are now, but we won’t have to worry about you accidentally burning down the entire forest.”
“Yip?” Zach tilted his head. The explanation was actually calming. The idea of being a young kit, rather than an adult, was one he found appealing on further consideration. Sure, it came with less magic, but it also meant less responsibility. And, echoing that sentiment, it meant that he could play more. Speaking of play, he wasn’t sure if it was all the excitement of the various changes he just underwent, but he found that he had an abundance of energy and needed desperately to expend it on something. He could chase his own tail, but the nine, shifting tails of the golden fox were much more alluring. He swayed his tail rapidly back and forth, crouching low against the grass… before he pounced onto the golden foxes’ tails, wriggling around and biting at them!
“H-hey!” The gold fox stammered, “not so hard. You may be a kit, but your teeth are sharp!” Despite his words, the amusement was obvious in the golden fox’s voice. He began to shift and sway his tails around to intentionally tease the young fox making a game out of it, so that Zach had to work for his newfound prey.
“Roawr!” Zach gave a playful growl as he continued to chase the golden fox’s tails. Somehow, this simple little game was more fun than any video game or other hobby he had engaged in in his entire life. Maybe it was just because he was so young, or maybe it was simply that tails were just that awesome.
“Quite the playful little scamp aren’t you?” The golden fox asked amusedly. “Well, it’s good to see you take to your new form so naturally,  rather than sulk about it. You know, the humans who fail the test, we punish by turning them into small animals. As mice, squirrels, or other small creatures, they then must participate in games and races during the festival. We place bets on who will win. It’s all rather good fun. They get changed back after the festival is over, of course, we’re not monsters.” The golden fox grinned as he continued to watch the kit continue to chase after his tails, nearly pinning one to the ground.
He continued, bemusedly, “Of course, you might be the first human we’ve actually gifted our form to in, hmmm, well, longer than I can remember. And, well, I’m a couple thousand years old. We normally allow those gracious enough to honor the spirits to participate in the festival as a guest, rather than an attraction. But you seemed so fascinated with my tails, I thought you might enjoy some of your own.” He was so caught up in his story that he hadn’t noticed the small kit even once transfixed on anything other than chasing his tails around. “Hey, small one, are you paying attention to me?”
“Yip?” Zach paused from his play to look up at the golden fox with curiosity.
“Heh.” The fox chuckled, resuming his expository history lesson. “ No doubt you’re wondering when you’ll have more tails again.” He splayed his own out as if making a point, “Many  of us get our second tail around the time that we turn about a century old.” He held up a paw and flexed a single digit to once again make a point. “However, for us  kitsune,  our age is not actually tied to the flow of time but to our state of mind. Your age will reflect your demeanor. . Act childish, and you will remain so. Act maturely, and you will gain not only maturity, but more power. I will warn you, some never grow old enough to gain a second tail, though that is usually by choice. If that is yours, we will respect it. That being said, since you were already an adult, for a human, you could rapidly grow as you learn our ways and train to control your new powers.”
“Roawr!” Zach gave another playful growl and pounced on one of the gold fox’s tais while he was distracted. He had tried to listen to most of what the other fox had told him. His big take away was that he never had to grow up as long as he didn’t act like a grown up. And that definitely had its appeal, even if it meant that he wouldn’t get all nine fluffy tails.
“Yeouch!” the gold fox shouted, though his grin made it clear that his cry of pain was fake. “Given your current behavior, I’m guessing you’re in no hurry to get back to adulthood. Honestly, that’s probably for the best. After all, the more time you spend as a kit, the more time you have to learn. And you, young one, have a lot to learn before you should have access to all of our power” Though the golden fox had figured out that he was enjoying being young once more, he hadn’t quite caught on that Zach planned on never growing up. That would probably become obvious after a century or two.
“YAP!” Zach gave an impatient bark and looked at the older fox expectantly. The fox had stopped teasing him with his tails and the game wasn’t as much fun anymore.
“Still in the mood to play, eh?” The golden fox barely held back his laughter. “Well, maybe you can play with something that spares my tails from your teeth. After all, there is a festival to attend, and now you can attend it as one of us.” He turned and looked towards the numerous stands just beyond Zach’s now abandoned car, “I’m sure you’d enjoy partaking in many of the games, as well as meeting some of the other fox kits among the clan. So, how about you let go of my tail for a bit and I’ll show you a few wonders?” The golden fox did not wait for a reply. In one swift motion, he turned his body in a circle, moving his tails out of Zach’s reach. Before he could give chase once more, the golden fox bit down gently on his scruff and lifted him into the air.
The young kit squirmed for a bit, but the fox had him good. There was no escaping his grasp. For now. Despite that, Zach could not help but be excited. His little fox kit tail was wagging so fast, it was in danger of coming off. There were just so many things to be excited for. For starters: he was no longer human; that was a huge improvement right there! And, of course, he wasn’t an adult, another huge improvement. Then, throw in the fact that he had been freed from the tyranny of pants, that he didn’t have to grow up again if he didn’t want to, that there was a festival of games and food to enjoy, and that he was going to get to start his new life among this kitsune civilization, and he honestly couldn’t think of a better end to the day! The only real downside to this was that he wouldn’t be able to play video games anymore. But, honestly, while video games were fun they paled in comparison to the simple joy of chasing a tail. On top of that, he was quite certain that once he met kits his own age, he was going to learn so many new games that were fun and exciting. Who knew what mischief that he might get into with his new friends once he learned a bit more about how kitsune magic worked. Even if he was just a tiny little fox kit, he still had a spark of magic. And a spark of magic meant that he could cause a hint of trouble.
He was, in fact, so excited to enter this new life that he forgot about what brought him here in the first place.  It never occurred to him that he’d even left his own world, stepping into one where the very rules of the universe had changed. Circumstance had led him to fit in, but the same would apply to the things he brought with him. By the time he returned to next year’s festival, his car would be nothing more than a fern covered boulder.. It wouldn’t even occur to him that the two were one in the same, or  that his car had undergone some kind of transfiguration.
And why should he think about such things? This new life, it didn’t matter if it was in a new world or his own, he only knew that it made him happy. The philosophical ramifications of his current situation might be something to keep someone else up at night, but to him, they simply weren’t important. What was important was that he was able to enjoy his life to the fullest.
And he chose to do just that.
The End

Most abortions are now banned in 20 states following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Fourteen of these states have abortion bans after just 6 weeks of pregnancy.
This is not okay, not reasonable, and definitely not acceptable. If you don’t know me well, maybe you don’t know what I do for a living. I’m an ultrasound technologist. My colleagues and I look at babies in every stage of pregnancy every day. I also work in a high risk unit. My unit and I look at babies and mothers in varying states of mental and physical health. If you think an abortion ban sounds good, then I am a good person to ask about why it isn’t.
So let me tell you:
About the woman whose baby developed with no skull, and the brain just floating around. Her baby still had a heartbeat, and she would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman whose baby has a rare chromosomal condition called T13. Her baby’s organs grew outside its body, and had a cleft palate so bad that there was no nose. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman whose blood pressure is spiking so high that she passes out and is likely to stroke out before her baby is born. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman with such a severe form of hemophilia that giving birth will probably be fatal to both her and the baby. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the 13 year old whose school isn’t allowed to teach her science-based sex-education, so she didn’t know how to prevent pregnancy or STIs, but whose body is not developed enough to carry to term without being damaged. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman who was raped by a friend who wanted to “make sure she got home safely”. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman who has PCOS so only has periods every 3-4 months and can’t find a birth control that works for her. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman whose abusive partner removed the condom without telling her (it’s called stealthing, and it happens more frequently than you’d think). She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman with the cornual ectopic pregnancy that isn’t reliably in the uterus, and could grow to a size that will kill her. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman who has two kids she can barely feed already, and whose birth control just increased in price. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the 18 year old who just started college and is going to be the first graduate of the family if she can just stay in school. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the woman whose IUD slipped slightly and is now endangering both her and the pregnancy it was designed to prevent. She would not be able to access abortion.
About the many, many, many women who just don’t want to be pregnant for reasons that are their own. Health issues, abusive relationships, financial issues, social issues. They would not be able to access abortion.
Some of these might sound like reasonable exceptions to you. And you would be correct. But no one should get to decide what happens with another person’s body, not even to save a life. You need written permission from a corpse before life saving organs can be taken from them. You cannot be forced to donate blood, no matter how dire the situation. And no one else should get to decide what a woman does with her body, end of story.
But it’s not the end of the story, is it? Because here’s the kicker: if you consider abortion to be a murder (and some people genuinely believe that!) then miscarriage can be second degree murder. And this is already happening all over the world - El Salvador, Ecuador, and the US of A. Women are being jailed for miscarriages and stillbirths because they might have done something to cause it. If you start down this path of jailing women and doctors for making healthcare decisions that affect no one but themselves, then you get women who don’t go to a doctor for a safe procedure and instead order pills online or use whatever metal instruments they can find to end their own pregnancies. Women who are honestly experiencing a miscarriage (which is medically called a spontaneous abortion, just fyi) will not go to their doctor for help. They will bleed out on their bathroom floors or die of septic shock. And I haven’t even talked about how this will disproportionately affect women of color, LGBTQA+ women, or trans men. This isn’t about the “sanctity of life” anymore. It’s about controlling women.”

Personal Breakdown of Swan Upon Leda, Stanza by Stanza
Disclaimer: this analysis is entirely personal opinion. If you have a different interpretation that's great! In fact, I'd love to hear your interpretations of the song. Anyway, analysis time:
A husband waits outside
A crying child pushes a child into the night
She was told he would come this time
Without leaving so much as a feather behind
To enact at last the perfect plan
One more sweet boy to be butchered by man
This tells the story of a child anywhere from 5 - 17 being forced to birth her rapists baby.
The first line mentions a husband, which can be interpreted as the child's husband - child brides are very common in a lot of places - or it could be the child's father, the husband of the child's mother. I personally think the first scenario is more likely.
The next lines mention that she was told she wouldn't be raped this time. Emphasis on the this time. The feather is a reference to the swan that raped Leda, which is how we know the child being born is a result of rape. In my opinion, this child bride was raped by her husband before they were married and, since her virtue was ruined, she was forced to marry him. Her family promised he would not rape her again, but he did and she became pregnant. This was the husband's "perfect plan." He would rape her, which forced her to marry him, and then rape her again to trap her in the marriage with a baby. The last line tells us that the baby was born male. He will grow up to be "butchered by men" likely meaning his father will be abusive or that he will grow up to be exactly like his father.
But the gateway to the world
Was still outside the reach of him
What never belonged to angels
Had never belonged to man
The swan upon Leda
Empire upon Jerusalem
The "gateway to the world," in my mind, refers to the female reproductive system. It has always been out of reach to this "him." He can't produce a child on his own so he rapes women to access the "gateway to the world."
The next bit, "what never belonged to angels had never belonged to man" is so personal to me. The bit about angels can be a reference to so many things. The angel can be Zeus raping Leda. The angel can be the Christian God forcing 13 year old Mary to carry Jesus. The angel is a representation of how women are treated mythologically. The thing that never belonged to these angels is, of course, the female body. The next line states that the female body has never belonged to men. To me, the greater implication is that men have taken their examples from the "angels." They think they're owed the female body because the gods took it as they pleased.
The next two lines are comparison lines. The swan is upon Leda like how the kingdom of Jerusalem has been historically and biblically conquered over and over and over again. This line does, however, imply that women are holy. We are sacred ground in the same way Jerusalem is - we are holy.
A grandmother smugglin' meds
Past where the god child-soldier
Setanta stood dead
A graceful turner of heads
Weaves through the checkpoints like a needle and the thread
Someone’s frightened boy waves her on
She offers a mother’s smile and soon she’s gone
The first line is pretty self explanatory: an old woman is smuggling medication, likely some sort of contraception or abortion pills. She could also be smuggling abortifacients - things that cause miscarriages such as mugwort.
The next part is more confusing to those of us who aren't Irish. Setanta is an Irish mythological figure, but his importance here doesn't come from his mythos. Setanta has been used by Irish nationalists ad a symbol for a unified Ireland. The knowledge that the grandmother is sneaking things past Setanta implies that she's bringing the medicine from Southern Ireland into Northern Ireland, where the abortion laws are stricter.
Hozier next describes the grandmother going through the checkpoints into Northern Ireland. She does this by being a graceful turner of heads. My impression is that she's using her beauty to distract the people checking her so she can get the medicine through. If you've ever read the Witcher books, there's a scene where Yennefer makes herself more beautiful so that people will look at her and not at Ciri, who is supposed to be dead. That was the first thing I associated with the "graceful turner of heads" line.
Beyond just beauty though, the grandmother is using her status as a weapon. She's just a sweet old lady, she wouldn't do anything wrong. To me, this is a reference to how women are often seen as too pure, too innocent, too submissive and obedient to cause issues. The grandmother knows she's viewed this way and uses it to her advantage.
The next line is a simple interaction. She has someone on the inside that helps with her smuggling operation. This boy, maybe one of the people working the checkpoints, maybe a police officer, or maybe just a young boy, helps the grandmother navigate to the people she needs to deliver the medication too.
The important thing about the boy is that he too is someone who is not suspected to be involved in the smuggling of abortifacients because he's a boy. Men as a societal class are rarely involved in the fight for women's rights. This boy will not be a main suspect if the smuggling is uncovered - and that is why he's doing it and not a young woman.
The gateway to the world
The gun in a trembling hand
Where nature unmakes the boundary
The pillar of myth still stands
The swan upon Leda
Occupier upon ancient land
This last verse is a slightly altered version of the chorus. The gateway to the world is, as we previously discussed, the female reproductive system. This time, however, there's a gun. This gun is likely the result of being denied an abortion. The woman has no way to stop the birth no - no way except an at home abortion. Perhaps she's horribly depressed, as people tend to be when they're pregnant with a rapists child. Whatever the reason, this woman has decided suicide is the answer. She will have an abortion by killing herself.
The next two lines, "where nature unmakes the boundary, the pillar of myth still stands," is about the fight for women's rights. We - women - are the "nature." We are unmaking the boundaries that men have placed upon us and our bodies. The pillar of myth, however, still stands in our way. This pillar of myth is, of course, the religious arguments that stop abortion access.
The last line of the song, "occupier upon ancient land" is very direct. Hozier is calling women an occupied nation, an oppressed people.
MUSICALITY ANALYSIS:
Swan Upon Leda is a very soft song, which doesn't seem to match the material. This is an incredibly angry song, but it's sung like a lullaby. To me, this is an incredibly important aspect of the song.
The first important thing about the softness is that it's a representation of female rage, in my opinion. Historically and still today, women are expected to carry themselves with dignity. Anger is not a dignified emotion. Angry women must often stay silent or soft to protect themselves. We don't have the privilege of a screaming match with men that hurt us because that might make them hurt us more. Our anger is, by necessity, a quiet affair.
The other important thing about the softness of the song is that it sounds like a lullaby. I think this has a few meanings. First of all, lullabies call babies to mind which is very fitting for a song about abortion. The second thing is that, to me, the lullaby implies that women inherit the grief of being occupied. Even the small, female baby listening to this lullaby understands the rage inside it. We are born with this quiet rage. It is our lullaby, the thing that lulls us to sleep.

Genocide in Palestine: It’s Really Not Complicated
An accessible primer designed to sway the “both sides are wrong” people in your life
(context: i put this together for my own parents, but decided to share it in case it could help anyone else. i think a lot of us feel like we're just shouting into an echo chamber & only being heard by people who already agree.... so this was my attempt at making something that could help carry the truth outside of our activist bubble! feel free to copy/paste whatever, tweak the language so it's in ur own words, etc.)
The context:
A brief history of Israeli occupation
A long track record of peaceful protest (all met with slaughter)
An exemplary essay on the Palestinian experience of the global climate around occupied Palestine
The situation in Palestine today:
Is this genocide?
Indisputably, yes.
But if you can’t take my word for it, listen to the experts:
Holocaust survivors protesting for a free Palestine
The resignation letter from the Director of New York Office of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights (I strongly recommend reading at least the first page) (full letter here)
More from the former UN Director
Every single country in the UN voting yes on a ceasefire & then being blocked by the US and a handful of our military allies
Explicit genocidal intent from Israel's Public Diplomacy Minister
Explicit genocidal intent (en masse) in the Zionist movement
Another Auschwitz survivor speaking out (this man is now dead, this video is >13 yrs old) (these atrocities have gone unpunished for decades)
Why anti-Zionism is NOT anti-Semitism:
A brief background on Zionism
The IDF employs the same violence against Jewish Israeli citizens who don’t support the genocide:
Zionist forces brutally assault Orthodox Jews in the streets of Jerusalem for opposing genocide in Gaza
Holocaust survivors protesting for a free Palestine
More support for anti-Zionism from a Jewish woman raised by a Zionist family
Israeli citizens speaking out against the IDF:
Israeli teens serving jail time for refusing to serve in the IDF
Another Jewish Israeli speaking out against Palestinian occupation
Evidence that the IDF is fabricating claims to rationalize further violence (and is actively responsible for much of the actual damage):
“Baby teeth from infants burned alive” debunked by experts, (addtl dentists weighing in)
Accusing Hamas of war crimes committed by the IDF
Scenes from Israel & Palestine before Gaza’s power grid got cut
Recent atrocities: a not-remotely-comprehensive list
Thousands of children dead. Not claimed to be dead without any evidence—actual children with names and verifiable identities, crushed and burned alive.
The 2023/2024 school year in Gaza has been formally canceled because every single student is dead.
IDF targeting designated “safe” evacuation routes:
https://www.wionews.com/world/israeli-strikes-kill-gaza-civilians-including-children-on-safe-routes-reports-646972 (Sidebar: can we talk about the use of quotation marks around “kill” here? ‘Oops, my hand slipped onto the trigger of a gun and then someone got “ouch-ed” by a “bullet!” Clumsy me!’)
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/14/gaza-civilians-afraid-to-leave-home-after-bombing-of-safe-routes
IDF targeting hospitals:
Al Quds Hospital
Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital
Cutting Gaza’s power grid
The indiscriminate use of weapons banned by the Geneva Convention. White phosphorus does not stop burning till it reaches bone. They are crop dusting refugee camps and schools with this. This is not just hearsay, this has been eyewitness-confirmed by international journalists & Amnesty International.
They dropped it on a fucking school. Full of children. Burned alive from the inside out. There are literally no words.
More evidence
As of 11/2, lsrael has dropped 25,000 tons of explosives on Gaza Strip, which is equivalent to the explosive force of two nuclear bombs.
IDF targeting refugee camps:
Jabalia refugee camp:
More on Jabalia
A second blast on Jabalia in 2 days (there’s since been a third)
Israeli soldiers starting a “kidnapping challenge” in which Palestinians in the West Bank are kidnapped and blindfolded. TikTok is filled with videos of Israeli soldiers and civilians participating.
Pogroms & forced displacement in the West Bank
Targeting journalists & silencing dissenters
Cholera outbreaks from contaminated water & infant death from dehydration due to Gaza being (deliberately) cut off from clean water
Hundreds of Palestinian workers abducted & tortured without ever learning the charges
The Bottom Line: the IDF claims to be targeting Hamas, but they’ve razed entire cities to the ground. They target churches, mosques, & synagogues alike. They target refugee camps and schoolyards and bucolic farmland. This is not about tracking down a few terrorists, this is about wiping out an ethnic group in order to occupy their homeland.
The human side: individual voices & experiences
A message from a doctor in Gaza
A young video blogger reporting from Gaza
Palestinian children speaking out
The faces of the people we’re targeting.
(There’s obviously a tremendous amount of this, most of which is much much harder to watch. But I am emotionally exhausted so for now I’ll just leave it at that.)
Does this mean you condone Hamas?
No. Do you condone decades of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement?
Or, put differently: Palestine has been under violent imperialist rule for years, with similar atrocities / acts of violence / systematic displacement taking place for literal decades. As I keep hearing from better-informed activists than myself, this did not start on October 7th. (Exhibit A, Exhibit B, I could go on but you get the idea). And after decades of peaceful protest and pleas to be seen, the first time that Palestine has ever received this much media attention was after the violence on 10/7. Do I think it’s good to harm civilians? No. Obviously not. But I think it’s worse to bomb thousands of civilian buildings for decades on end without any oversight, accountability or consequence.
Unfortunately, no dominant system of power has ever been dismantled without bloodshed. Targeting civilians is atrocious, but that’s what Israel has been doing for decades, and no one batted an eye until Palestine struck back.
If this is true, why is this my first time hearing about it?
Let’s talk about:
The Propaganda Machine!
A silly & unexpectedly informative overview of the propaganda machine… ~in song~
One very small example
Reuters provides a good example of how journalists rely on readers’ short attention span to paint Palestinians as monsters:
Let’s start with the headline: [Freed Israeli hostage says 'I've been through hell']
Yikes! Yeah! Makes sense! Being kidnapped is really scary! The front half of the article describes the pain and terror of that kidnapping in detail. But if you scroll down to the bottom, you get to read her account on her time as a hostage:
"When we got there, first of all they told us that they believed in the Koran and that they would not harm us," she recounted. A group of five people from her kibbutz were held together, each with an individual guard who stayed with them 24 hours a day. Lifshitz said a doctor visited them every other day and brought them the medicines they needed. "They took good care of the wounded," Lifshitz said. Video of her release on Monday showed her turning around to shake the hand of a masked captor. Asked why she had done that, she replied: "They treated us gently and met all our needs."
Sidebar: did you know that Hamas was willing to free all hostages in exchange for the release of the countless Palestinians imprisoned by the IDF on no charges whatsoever? I sure didn’t! Because U.S. media doesn’t cover those stories. Because the corporations funding these atrocities have financial interest in maintaining Israel’s status as innocent victims, and the entire civilian population of Palestine as a living smokescreen for Hamas.
Examples of the U.S. trying to maintain its facade as “the good guy” — The U.S. takes credit for restoring power to Gaza when in fact it was Palestineans on the ground who restored their own power
Thanks to pressure from a massive groundswell of grassroots support, the media climate has changed in the past week alone, but I swear to god that one week ago (10/26), I googled “attacks on Palestine” / “bombings in Gaza” and Google EXCLUSIVELY provided results on the Oct 7 attack on Israel.
The US govt attempting to run further arms deals in secret with zero oversight, inured from all checks & balances, in order to hide our involvement in these atrocities
I have yet to see a single one of these massive protests in the news
But if this is really genocide, why is the US still siding with Israel?
A very thorough explanation from a former Stanford professor.
(The short version: Israel has long been America's attack dog in the Middle East, and allows us unparalleled access to the resources that we want to take advantage of. It's the military-industrial complex at its most insidious. If you can’t accept that answer, please just listen to the podcast.)
Misc. addtl resources:
A helpful thread addressing common pro-Israel arguments
An excellent reading list compiled by people much smarter than me
Okay, so we’re funding a genocide. What can I do?
Buy e-sims to get Gaza back online
Contact your local legislators. This google doc makes it insanely easy to send an auto-email in protest to every single bill funding the genocide. It’ll help if you change the language a tiny bit to keep it from getting flagged as spam, but whatever you’ll actually do is better than nothing. Mobile version here.
Boycott the companies most actively lobbying for further violence
TALK ABOUT IT. EVEN WHEN IT IS UNCOMFORTABLE. Especially when it’s uncomfortable. The government is depending on our exhaustion, our desensitization, our silence & our compliance. Do Not Let Them Get Away With It. If nothing else, your support helps suffering people to feel a tiny bit more seen. That should be reason enough.
Who are you (and what’s your agenda)?
Nobody, really. Just some privileged American who’s been watching our president stand around spouting bullshit about how, “oh, well, there’s no way to know…” while my twitter feed overflows with on-the-ground footage of the worst shit I have ever seen. I’m sharing this anonymously because I have a hard time feeling visible on the internet (I don’t have any social media accounts under my real name, just goofy fandom aliases to post about my dumb hyperfixations). But it’s also because it doesn’t really matter who I am. I’m not half as educated as any of the folks linked above, so the most I can do is compress & compile the resources that a lot of folks—namely, those who get their news from mainstream media—don’t get to see.
If you’re so unqualified, why are you making this? What’s your game here 🤨🤨🤨
It’s pretty fuckin selfish, but I guess my immediate agenda is to be able to talk to my parents again? To have a real conversation without the constant fear that someone’s about to say something that’ll make me totally shut down, just because they get their info from the news. If it can do that much, I’ll be… still drenched in despair, I guess, but maybe 1% less anxious?
Beyond that, I feel like a lot of us feel like we’re shouting into an echo chamber. Like, all of this info is out there, but it only forms a larger picture if you’re already, constantly plugged in. I think that in a lot of cases, our (very justified) anger winds up alienating folks whose main flaw is just… trusting the resources that they’ve been taught to trust. So I liked the idea of making something that would feel accessible to folks who sit outside of our bubble—something that could be informative without coming off as shout-y or judgmental. Hopefully I came close?
…End of day, I guess it feels better than doing nothing.

SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) - El Salvador's state of emergency to combat gangs, which has widespread public support despite a growing prison population and allegations of human rights abuses, will be maintained until all criminals are captured, the country's security minister told Reuters.
Since President Nayib Bukele asked the country's congress to approve a state of exception in March last year, security forces have arrested more than 64,000 suspected gang members and associates. Authorities estimate they have around 10,000 more arrests to make and the measure has been regularly extended.
"As long as we have these murderers and these terrorists fleeing and escaping within the country, this measure must continue," Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro said in an interview last week in his office in San Salvador.
He said Salvadoran authorities were working with counterparts in southern Mexico, Guatemala and the United States to find an unspecified number of gang members who had fled.
The crackdown on El Salvador's notorious gangs has more than halved murders in one of the most crime-ridden countries in the Western hemisphere, drawing the interest of other nations struggling with gang violence and raising questions about what rights citizens are willing to exchange for living on safer streets.
With nearly 2% of its adult population behind bars, El Salvador has the highest incarceration rate in the world and recently inaugurated one of the region's largest prisons, with a capacity for 40,000 inmates.
Under the state of emergency some constitutional rights have been suspended. Arrests can be made without a warrant, the government has unfettered access to private communications, and detainees' rights to a lawyer have been shelved.
But the vast majority of people in El Salvador say they approve of the hard-line approach and feel safer. A survey this month by pollsters CID Gallup found that 92% of the population supports the state of exception.
In 2022 homicides fell 57% to 495, from 1,147 in 2021, according to government figures. Extortion, one of the gangs' primary sources of income, has plummeted, many residents say. By August of last year, the transportation minister estimated bus companies had already saved around $50 million from not paying.
In Santa Tecla, a city just outside capital San Salvador, 45-year-old mechanic Manuel said he had paid extortion money for 12 years. Every two weeks he gave the money to hitmen from MS-13 who threatened to kill his wife and four children if he did not pay, and he was often forced to fix the gang's cars for free. During Christmas he would pay double.
But since last July, no one has come to collect the payment, he said.
"I feel calmer, I can go for a walk. I go out to walk every night with my young children," he told Reuters. "Before I didn't even take them out."
STRONGMAN MOVES
The results of the crackdown have led other countries in the region to consider similar policies, including Honduras, which implemented a pared-down version last December. El Salvador has also discussed offering support to Haiti, which has pleaded for help from the international community to end gang violence that has left much of its territory off-limits to the government.
Villatoro said El Salvador's curbed rights were necessary to ensure security and would only be lifted when the security risk "reaches numbers close to zero."
"The majority of Salvadorans have not been subjected to this suppression of rights," he said.
But the widening of state authority in the name of security, for some analysts, is in-step with other strongman moves Bukele has made to centralize power. He has dissolved anti-corruption legal bodies, stacked the country's top court with loyalists who immediately allowed for presidential re-election, and passed a sweeping law aimed at prohibiting journalists from writing about gangs.
Bukele has also built a communications juggernaut powered partly by paid internet trolls to hail his policies, especially on security, and attack those who raise human rights concerns.
Rights groups have documented hundreds of arbitrary arrests, torture, and the deaths of prisoners in state custody.
Human Rights Watch, citing leaked government data, has reported "mass due process violations" and said minors as young as 12 were being held in overcrowded prisons.
The government denies the accusations of torture and other rights abuses outside those allowed under the state of exception. Around 3,700 people who were considered to have been "coerced" by gangs into crimes had been released, Villatoro said.
"It doesn't interest us to convict anyone unjustly," he said.
For ten residents Reuters spoke to in neighborhoods around San Salvador once dominated by gangs the crackdown has transformed their lives for the better. They now can go outside at night, spend time at parks and soccer pitches, receive visitors from other parts of the city and even order fast food delivery - all unthinkable when the gangs roamed.
Alexander Guillen is a 24-year-old university student who is part of an artistic graffiti collective that now paints the walls where Barrio 18 tags once reigned.
"There is freedom that young people have to be able to perform, be it artistically, culturally, or in sports," he said. "We have that freedom to be able to develop ourselves... to be able to use the public spaces in the neighborhood without any fear."

bartender Eddie who lets Steve order and pay for beers but then never ever hands him a single beer ever, refuses to. only makes Steve fancy pretty cocktails that are way more expensive than his beer order, but he doesn't make him pay for the difference.
just tells him such a pretty boy deserves the prettiest drinks

Idk what you guys are thinking, but in my head it is obvious, clear as day, that Eddie Munson is a baby gay... in the sense he's never even kissed a guy at 20/21 (whatever canon age he is). He knows what he wants, he isn't a child, but this man is gay in a tiny tiny town in butt-fuck Indiana, he has not had a chance to act on it. The dating pool is not exactly Olympic sized.
So when Steve has his bi awakening and kisses Eddie first, he would do it easy, hard, fast... And Eddie is a bit of a mess. His kisses are sloppy, too wet, too much, because he Has Not Done This Before. Of course Steve would just think he's being too eager, or a bad kisser, and not even guess at the truth, but keep kissing him anyway (because he makes pretty sounds at the back of his throat every time Steve kisses him, and he bites at his lips all the time).
But then Eddie casually drops it in conversation like "hey Harrington, how does it feel to go down in history as Eddie the freak Munson's first kiss?" and Steve would lose his cool for a second and then proceed to give Eddie the sweet, slow, no-tongue, not-overwhelming-first-kiss Eddie actually deserved.
And Eddie might not be a natural but he's a quick learner and Steve will sometimes very gently tell him to slow it down, or cool it with the tongue, and in no time Eddie's giving as well as he's getting and they make out a lot. A lot.

Babygirl Steve this, Scoops-Ahoy-era steddie that...
But no one's talking about Nancy stumbling into Scoops Ahoy after a day of shopping for outfits for her new job, and coming face to face with Robin Buckley in a sailor uniform????
Scoops Robin is Nancy's bisexual awakening and it takes them a year to meet again but in 1986 when Robin is in her room, going through Nancy's things, and Nancy's supposed to find them clothes to go speak with Victor Creel... All Nancy can think about is Robin in that stupid uniform and how easy it would be to pull her in by that red tie and kiss her lips...... And also how nice it would be to have Robin on her lap in those shorts, free access to her thighs.
She's looking for outfits for them in her closet, but her mind is in the gutter, wondering if Robin got to keep her old Scoops uniform.

After the world finally stops threatening to end, sometime in late 1989, Steve quietly gets a tattoo across his ribs. It’s something personal and private, something he just needs etched into his skin because to not have it there would feel like a lie. He feels disconnected from himself, he feels alone, he feels like bullshit. Going into Indianapolis for the weekend and shoving the handwritten line at a tattoo artist is the most human Steve has felt in forever. The sharp pain of the needle followed by the dull ache of the healing process finally grounds him.
No one but Robin hears about this, though. And turns out outside of saving the world, now that he doesn’t swim as much, Steve doesn’t have that many excuses to take his shirt off anymore. So, the tattoo is a secret by omission, and Steve is fine with that. It’s his thing, and it doesn’t have to be exposed for it to mean as much as it does.
And it does mean a lot. It’s a mark of a new beginning, something physical to prove to Steve he is still around and kicking.
And after that, life feels livable again. He has his friends, his only real family. He is managing Family Video now, after the owner had moved out of town due to world-almost-ending experiences. He is finally settling into being someone he actually wants to be.
Most importantly, Steve keeps in touch with Eddie as much as he can. They’re hanging out on and off all the time, falling into an easy routine without either of them meaning to. And by 1990, before either of them knows what hits them, they’re fumbling in the backroom at Family Video, making out against a shelf, VHS tapes raining down on them like falling in love: fast, hard, unexpected.
It’s all a blur of finally expressing things they had been keeping hidden for too long. Sharing secrets at midnight, back and forth with the pass of a joint or two or five. And after they start, they couldn't stop even if they had wanted to. They need this good thing. And they both know too well how fast the shit hits the fan around them. So, they don’t care for taking things slow, not after years of dancing around each other. All this to say, it doesn’t take long at all for Eddie to find himself in Steve Harrington's bedroom.
He’s sitting against the headboard, watching as Steve gets rid of his clothes. He had been expecting an almost childish awkwardness from Steve, because Eddie knows he hadn't done this before, not with a man. Not that Eddie has that much experience to speak of himself, but he had come to terms with it way earlier. It doesn’t matter what he had expected though, because in truth Steve is smooth, sexy even. He removes his clothes with purpose and devastating eye contact. He gets rid of his pants, and then his shirt is coming off – finally, finally messing up that amazing head of hair of his.
Eddie almost gets too distracted by Steve's intensity to notice the tattoo. When he comes closer, though, Eddie places his hand over his ribs. Instinctively, he just has to look and see what his skin looks like against Steve's skin. And there it is, right by his fingers. Pitch black ink, already healed over, already fully Steve. The words are stark against his pale skin. I want to be adored. Eddie has the air knocked out of him.
Steve looks down, confused for a moment. "Wha-?" he starts to ask, but then his brain catches on. Steve feels self-conscious, kisses Eddie to distract him from what he'd found. He hadn't known this is how he would feel, had never felt ashamed or embarrassed of much about his appearance before. And this isn’t quite shame. But this is Steve, bared, naked, in ways that go above a state of undress.
Eddie breaks the kiss, hand splayed over Steve's chest. "Fuck, Steve. When did you get that?"
"A while back. It's nothing." It is everything. It means so much to Steve, he'd never have the words.
Eddie's eyes soften, skimming the words again and again. The smile that graces his lips is tiny, a kind little thing Steve usually only sees on his face whenever he is around the nuggets, Max or Dustin usually.
"I can make that happen," Eddie says, honesty dripping from his words. It isn’t his usual, larger than life rambling. This is Eddie seeing him, really seeing him.
"What?" Steve asks, to diffuse the tension. A self-sabotaging little jab at their clear connection, because he actually thinks he knows exactly what Eddie means.
"I can adore you, big boy," Eddie says, and his playful spark was back. He winks, pulling Steve close by the shoulders. He gets both of them on Steve's bed. Steve's chest aches.
"Shut up," he says, because he doesn’t know how to accept something like this. Doesn’t know how to process that anyone would care, that anyone would pay attention.
Eddie rolls his eyes at him, flips them on the bed so he can straddle Steve's hips. Eddie traces the ink on his skin like it is precious. He kisses Steve hard, kisses his love into his lips, pushes it into his mouth like he does his tongue.
"I do adore you," Eddie says later, after they're both tired and spent and sated. After sex has made things fuzzier. It feels so simple now. It is so true.
"Eddie," Steve starts, ready to tell Eddie about all the ways in which he, Steve, is fucked up. Instead: "Thank you."
"Hey, I got you."
And Eddie does, he really does.

My #1 post of 2022
Eddie's Vecna song would be something completely unexpected. Even though he's not cursed, he'd leave a cassette ready, just in case. He would hand it to Steve, tell him to keep it in his back pocket.
When they save the world and all that horror is in their rearview, Steve finds his bloody pants in a pile under his bed, one week forgotten. Eddie's beat up cassette is tangled in the mess, and he's glad he checked the pockets.
He puts the tape on at a low volume, expecting heavy metal, deafening and loud.
Instead, the tape is a loop of All Of Me by Billie Holiday. At the end of the song, over the last chorus, a woman's voice crackles through, louder than the singing. "Hey, goodnight, baby. Mama loves you all the time."
Turns out the only recording Eddie has of his mother has been sitting in Steve Harrington's room. Eddie's been in hospital, hasn't had the chance to remember it with all the sleeping he's been doing (who knew extreme blood loss would really knock a guy out). But he trusted Steve with this precious thing, and the realization is all it takes for Steve to know once and for all he's in love.
Steve brings Eddie a walkman and earphones, and he sits by Eddie's bed while he listens. Eddie pauses the tape. They hold hands over the edge of his hospital bed, comfortable silence falling between them like a warm blanket over the room.

Journaling prompts 2/3/2023
Who is someone that inspires you?
I remember being thirteen years old, hurtling towards fourteen, and feeling like the weirdest, most uncomfortable person to walk this earth. I felt like I wanted to crawl out of my skin every time I had to talk to someone else and walking down the street felt like an entire mission built to attack my nervous system.
Of course, realistically, no one cared I was walking anywhere, no one actually noticed anything about me apart from the fact I was exuding Bella from Twilight levels of awkwardness before Bella from Twilight was even a thing. In hindsight and old age, I can recognize now I was simply making things worse for myself. In the nicest way possible, nobody cares what you are doing, which I came to realize, is a truly wonderful thing.
But thirteen-year-old me was obviously the only person who felt the way I did and nobody could ever understand me for I, in the words of Avril Lavigne, was complicated.
In my defense I hadn't had your regular schooling, and I'd not had regular access to friendships growing up either, so suddenly flinging myself into the outside world was petrifying and I hadn't learned the stereotypical social skills most kids my age had gotten over by that time. I was lonely, angry about it, and felt like I was too weird for anyone to entertain being friends with. I didn't know what was cool and what wasn't and I had honestly, no idea what was going on, like ever.
I don't really remember how it got there, but one day I was going through my stuff in my bedroom; I listened to music constantly, and since having access to a proper bedroom, I had begun painting and drawing perpetually. That was my little safe space. I wasn't exceptionally good at either but when I was a little younger, I had taken a book from the library about trees and I began to draw them; it bothered me it looked so 2D and bland, so I obsessively drew trees until I felt it was perfect. From there, I discovered how much I enjoyed drawing and how much silence it created for my brain. So there I was rummaging through the stuff stashed away under my bed, when I came across a plain silver CD that just said "SKYLINES AND TURNSTILES" in marker pen. I didn't understand where it came from, no one else was ever in my bedroom and I hadn't so much stuff that I would have simply forgotten about having it. So I stuffed it into my CD player and pressed play, anxiously waiting to hear whatever it contained....much to my dismay, I hated it. "What is this absolute noise!?" I thought, shoving it back into the clear plastic pocket it was previously stored in and returning it to deep dark depths underneath a teenage girl's bed.
A couple of months went by, uneventfully...I think the biggest thing was I joined a drama group around that time, a drama group whose female director rather insensitively commented on how "Heroine chic" thin I was and how "You should audition for the drug addict in our next production, you have the look for it.". I made friends with two girls and I was so incredibly happy because I thought I was establishing some real friendships until a couple of weeks later when these girls, the same age as me, started discussing how many boys they had given blowjobs and turned to me for my number, as though at 13/14 this was a regular, normal thing to be chatting about. The week of auditions I came down with a vile cold that completely took away my voice and I thought it was my body's way of telling me to get out of there, so I did.
By this point, my rage was building...I was angry I couldn't relate to people my own age, I felt simultaneously so much older yet so much more naïve, I was angry at myself because I felt I had failed by dropping out of the drama group. I couldn't play Hockey or swim. I didn't know how to be anything other than quiet and draw.
For some reason, I listened to the mystery CD again and this time it was suddenly clearer like someone had translated this foreign language for me.
The first line I heard the vocalist sing was "You're not in this alone." and it felt like an invisible hand being placed on my shoulder. I don't believe in God as we're taught, I believe in something but I don't think it is as accessible as being something you can name. It is a feeling, this warmth, safety, and familiarity of finding something that feels like you have finally found a home.
I wanted to find out whose music this was, I went to the closest HMV store to me and asked a guy working there if he knew of any bands that released an album or EP titled Skylines and Turnstiles, he said no, the guy beside him though said yes, but it was a track, the album "is called Bullets or something, it's by My Chemical Romance." announced guy two "Who's My Chemical Romance?" asked guy one of guy two. "Some band" came his insightful response. Guy two showed me the aisle that held the ONE and only copy they had in store of I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love by My Chemical Romance. I took it home and listened to it all the way through in one sitting. My life changed.
Shortly afterward came Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, this was my first time seeing the people that had created the album I'd been in love with for the past year or so; they had this band photo on the back of their album and headshots inside the album artwork, the styles of these photos reminded me of a horror movie poster vibe which went hand in hand with it's cover art that had a striking resemblance to the piece The Lovers II by Rene Magritte. The band are lined up with the central guy wearing all black with only a silver belt buckle of a Bat standing out and I remember thinking he was just so goddamn cool!!
I fell in love again with the storytelling of Three Cheers, the relationship between both albums, that this wasn't just music...this was the content of someone's mind being whispered, sang, and screamed out into the universe to see if anyone else felt the same way...it was someone's rage, loneliness, fears and discomfort being put on a painful amount of display in a plea to find they were not in this alone. In a generation of pumped-out pop machine hits, I'd heard nothing like it...nothing so raw, truthful, borderline painful to understand, yet so chaotically beautiful.
From there on, My Chemical Romance became a part of my little world; and although I love and admire each one of their talents, the person who inspires me the most has always been and always will be, Gerard Way.
For being brave enough to be vulnerable, for being selfless enough to push through, for being strong enough to overcome, for being determined enough to make sure kids like 13-year-old me knew they weren't in this alone, for still bringing comfort and inspiration to me twenty years later and mostly, for always having been unabashedly themselves throughout.
I still have no idea where the original CD with Skylines came from, it seemingly disappeared the way it arrived and in the unlikely event Gerard Way ever reads this, I just want to tell you one thing...
I still think you're so goddamn cool!!
Merci pour le venin ~ xo
