I am of the opinion that EL thinks it's really funny to mess with hopper just in general which is where mike picked up the habit, hop refuses to see that El is obviously involved so it's all "that damn wheeler kid is corrupting her" until he accidentally starts hanging around mike more and realizes that mike "little bitch" wheeler never does anything directly antagonistic until goaded by other people.
