Meet Erin Ash Sullivan
Meet Erin Ash Sullivan
Erin Ash Sullivan is one of fourteen acts to appear at the 2022 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Thursday Night Music Stage. It’s only been a short time that I’ve known Erin and her music. She contacted me and asked if I could interview her for this blog. I agreed that I’d listen to her music and see if my journalistic muse prompted me to ask some questions. And, boy, I hit the jackpot when I sat down…

The Biden administration insists that Israel has an obligation to defend itself but should minimize civilian harm in the process.

Biden admin officials see proof their strategy is working in hostage deal
Some officials say the agreement is a “vindication,” while others insist it was just the necessary move at this point in the war.
The Biden administration insists that Israel has an obligation to defend itself but should minimize civilian harm in the process.
Over recent weeks, the U.S. worked to get 100 aid trucks a day into Gaza from Egypt and is in touch with humanitarian groups on how to further alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in the enclave.
But the administration remains wary about Netanyahu’s endgame and seeming lack of a plan for what to do once Hamas is defeated. There was no sense that the pause would turn into a lengthier cease-fire, a senior administration official said. And there was some concern in the administration about an unintended consequence of the pause: that it would allow journalists broader access to Gaza and the opportunity to further illuminate the devastation there and turn public opinion on Israel.

Humanitarian groups tell White House cease-fire is only viable aid option
Humanitarian organizations met privately with U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Monday to discuss ways to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, two people familiar with the meeting said.

Israel investigates an elusive, horrific enemy: Rape as a weapon of war
On October 7, 2023, combatants from Gaza overran 22 Israeli communities, killed at least 1,200 and took 240 hostage in the surprise attack. But their greater goal, sexual trauma specialists say, was to introduce terror against women — and children and other unarmed civilians — as a means of spreading fear.

There has been much talk of war crimes in the Israel-Gaza conflict. But will anyone actually be prosecuted?
The Hamas-Israel conflict has unfolded with such brutality and savagery, many people now see it as an arena for possible war crimes prosecutions. Hamas atrocities against Israeli civilians on October 7 have been followed by the devastating Israeli assault on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The 24/7 media coverage presents daily evidence of war crimes. The international community from the United Nations Secretary-General to various UN agencies and UN Special Rapporteurs have called out war crimes during the conflict against civilians, and especially children.

Interview with upcoming artist (October): Erin Ash Sullivan
Tumblr media
You had a run at being a singer-songwriter decades ago and then stepped away from that path. What influenced your decision to return?
I've been fortunate to have had a very busy and fulfilling work life over the past few years and have worked as a classroom teacher, curriculum designer, writer, and school administrator. I've also had some intensive parenting years - but now my kids are older, and it's a little easier for me to take the time I need to devote to songwriting and performing. For me, the sheer exhaustion that came with being a parent of young kids made any other kind of creative endeavor seem impossible, so it feels good to have that energy back! You've been doing a lot of songwriting lately; what tends to spark a song for you?
Often it's an image or the turn of a phrase that sparks the idea for a song. I had a childhood friend, for example, who hit a rough patch in her life and was taking care of her two small children while living in a shelter up in Maine. She was keeping us all updated through daily Facebook posts: she started each entry with the number of days she'd been in the shelter, and no matter how challenging things got, she ended each post with a litany of the things she had to be grateful for and a closing line: "I can take it from there." When she passed away suddenly a few summers ago, I kept thinking about how I wanted to honor her and realized that the structure of her posts would translate beautifully to the structure of a song. The song "Take It From There" is almost word-for-word from Kim's entries. How did music start for you initially? What are your most important musical influences/inspirations?
My grandmother, Dorothy Foose, was my first musical inspiration. She was also a singer and performer, and as a young woman in the 1940s, she lived in New York City, sang in USO clubs, and auditioned for Broadway shows (even getting cast in the original production of Oklahoma!). She gave me my first piano and voice lessons, and every time I try to hit a high note I can hear her reminding me to breathe with my diaphragm and focus on my "head voice!" As far as other musical inspirations, the Joni Mitchell-Carole King-Joan Baez trinity is deep in my DNA. I remember the first time I heard "Blue" on the radio (for some reason WZLX played the album in its entirety that night), and it stopped me in my tracks. I was completely entranced with how Joni Mitchell could deploy words so strategically to tell a whole story and break your heart all at the same time.
Erin will be playing on Saturday, October 2nd, 7:30 p.m., in the Somerville Songwriter Sessions, along with Susan Levine and host Beth DeSombre, at the Somerville Armory Cafe, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville MA. (Great music, great food, free parking.) $10 suggested donation. PROOF OF VACCINE (for those of age) and masks required. Questions? [email protected]

Quick Q and A with Erin Ash Sullivan
Quick Q and A with Erin Ash Sullivan
Erin Ash Sullivan is a Harvard, Massachusetts based musician who has just recently released an album of original songs entitled We Can Hear Each Other. Her name was totally new to me and I was intrigued about what she had to say and sing about. I learned immediately that she had a way to grab the listener’s ear and pull them in one word and one note at a time. Erin’s songs are insightful and…

Discovery: Erin Ash Sullivan
Discovery: Erin Ash Sullivan
Erin Ash Sullivan is an American singer-songwriter and musician – Wind Around You is her latest song to be released. By Jane Howkins Wind Around You is a pretty folk song, featuring some lovely guitar melodies which sound lovely when combined with Erin’s lush vocal style. Lyrically, the song is a love song of sorts, using a ball of string as a metaphor for love. The guitar melodies are…

Since today's series is about the MV Christmas Seal floating clinic of Twillingate and we've not yet managed to make it to Twillingate, I'm digging into a few of our other encounters with Newfoundland & Labrador legends. The man seated in this photo is indeed one of them himself: Sandy Morris, a musician who's been at the heart of the Newfoundland folk renaissance since it started in the 1970s. He was part of the finale performance with Jean Hewson that I mentioned in the last post and played Voyageur solo on that festival main stage as well. But this photo is also significant for the presence of another legendary figure. We were doing a show at the (also legendary) Ship Inn in St. John's that Sandy was part of. He asked if it would be OK if he took a picture holding a portrait of his friend Dermot O'Reilly. O'Reilly was the Irish-born musician who co-founded the bands the Sons of Erin, Sullivan's Gypsies and Ryan's Fancy. He settled in Torbay Newfoundland and became a producer, mentor, TV producer, storyteller and chronicler of Newfoundland songs and stories. Sandy told me Dermot had wanted to meet Voyageur but had died at 64 just a few months before our visit for the #newfoundlandlabradorfolkfestival - The small box on Sandy's knee contains some of Dermot's ashes. I'm sorry that's as close as we got because I would love to have met him and put Voyageur in his hands but I'm really grateful that Sandy gave us at least this opportunity. Find out more about the Six String Nation project and presentation at https://www.sixstringnation.com . . . . . . . #newfoundland #newfoundlandhistory #ExploreNL #CanadianHistory #CanEd #CanadianMusic #SocialStudies #medicalhistory #nauticalhistory #tuberculosis #christmasseal #petertroake #CanadianGuitar #acousticguitar #CanadianTeachers #K12 #TRC #keynotespeaker #CdnEd #newfoundlandlabradorfolkfestival #VoiceEd #imaginED #sixstringnation #6SN #healthcareheroes #newfoundlandmusic #ryansfancy via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/B_ShJqhlEM3/

Hi everyone,
This is Ginny filling in for Sam. She does the work every week to make sure this site looks beautiful, and she’s gonna be away from her computer (which is a well-deserved break)!
Sam’s Update:
I got a lot of reading done this week, it was Booziebookathon, Dewey’s Reverse Readathon, AND NEWTs.
What Sam finished this week:
– NEWTs A-level DADA: Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel: This is the second book in the Themis Files. I listened on audio and it’s fully casted which is fab. I forgot how much I loooove this series. Can’t wait for the last book.
NEWTs A-level Transfiguration: Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera: this is a story about a newly out Latina on an internship in Portland, OR with her white-lady feminist. She’s gotta figure out who she is. I’m def writing a full review for this. I loved it.
Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad: book club book, can’t say too much until after book club.
What Sam’s reading now:
NEWTs E-level Transfiguration: Age of Legend by Michael J Sullivan: This is the 4th installment of this series and I fucking love them. I am about 150 pages in and remembering how much I love my sweet Rhunic children.
NEWTs O-level Transfiguration: Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian: this is the sequel to Ash Princess. I was surprised by the first one and am equally surprised by the second one. Let’s see how it goes.
Ginny’s Update (Aka Reads-with-the-wind):
Hi Everyone, hope you’re feeling well. I had an interesting week and this weekend has about knocked me flat. I get the feeling there’s going to be a very early bedtime in my future.
Currently Reading
Visions of Heat by Nalini Signh: Man, I really love Nalini Singh. This is the second book in the Psy-Changeling series and I am ready. I’m waiting to get more into the meat of this book, I’m still really early in it.
The Ten thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow: I grabbed this book from bookcon and I am so looking forwarding to reading this. I love a good portal fantasy and boy is this book delivering.
Finished
White Hot by Ilona Andrews: Well, I had been a little worried about the consent issues and boy did I not need to. The protagonist spends the entire book basically letting the heroine know that she had to set the pace. Also the book was, yet again action-packed. Neva is figuring out how to use her ridiculously powerful powers. I will admit, the relationship itself could feel surprisingly bland for the build-up, but the plot kept everything moving!
Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond: Wow was this book both painful to read and completely wonderful. I live in a bubble, DC in so many ways is sheltered from a lot of what happens elsewhere, and I’m only in the parts of the city that aren’t really affected by extreme poverty. Matthew went and talked to both landowners and tenants to try to get a very realistic picture of how poverty and eviction affect Americans. Honestly, not sure how much I can say other than the fact that this book was really powerful, bleak for quite a while, but ultimately hopeful that there are ways to fix the vicious cycle of poverty leading to eviction leading to poverty, etc. 5/5
Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire: Surprise suprise, Seanan McGuire is back on my read list. This is the first book in the InCryptid series, and I”ll probably write a post. Basically Verity is a monster-hunter who has eschewed the actual hunting, but is now dealing with disappearing women and a representative of the mysterious monster-hunting cabal who fall on the more intense side of “assume guilty unless somehow proven innocent.”
The Candle and the Flame  by Nafiza Azad: Yet again, this is a book for book club. Sure I’ll talk more later.
Minda’s Update:
No update this week.
Linz’s Update:
pfffft minimal reading got done. I’m trying to finish my cosplay and Magicians rewatch before DragonCon. Also I joined an online-based Filipino book club so I’ve been doing a lot of Interneting and tbr adding.
What Linz read:
Tumblr media
The Revisioners by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton: This forthcoming novel (and the last of my Booziebookathon reads) jumps between two women, Ava in the present day and her great-great-etc-grandmother Josephine, a former slave. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t quite what I was expecting.
What Linz is currently reading:
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern: Bless ALA for the chance to get an ARC, but it’s really killing my productivity to read this.
Secondborn by Amy Bartol: Bless Amazon’s three-month Kindle Unlimited trial. This scifi-fantasy YA is about Roselle, a Secondborn in a society where Firstborns rule and her class is assigned to serve the government (really, the Firstborns). I’m having a really hard time getting into it; it might hit my DNF shelf
The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Asad: whoops book club is creeping on up!
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
Sam, Melinda, Linz, and Ginny
Weekly Wrap-Up: August 4 – August 10, 2019 Hi everyone, This is Ginny filling in for Sam. She does the work every week to make sure this site looks beautiful, and she's gonna be away from her computer (which is a well-deserved break)!
