Se lanza el Dakar 2023: Más largo, más días y con importantes novedades deportivas

El Dakar vivirá una importante evolución reglamentaria en 2023 con varias importantes modificaciones que serán detalladas en completo más adelante y que podrían causar cambios en la forma de correr de los pilotos de punta. Los cambios, en cuanto a etapas espejadas, bonificaciones por tiempo real y separación de clasificaciones fueron adelantados en la presentación oficial por David Castera. Además, el rally será el que más kilómetros cronometrados tendrá desde 2014 con más de 5.000 km contra el reloj y 15 días competitivos, 14 etapas y 1 prólogo, algo que no se vive desde los últimos años en Sudamérica. La carrera se disputará entre el 31 de diciembre de 2022 y el 15 de enero de 2023.

Castera adelantó que es necesario modificar un poco la carrera para los pilotos de punta luego de que se detectaran algunas estrategias que no aportan a la competencia: Para evitar que los pilotos “regalen” etapas que van ganando para lograr una mejor posición de salida al día siguiente sin abrir ruta, se ha decidido entregar bonificaciones a los pilotos que cedan menos tiempo durante una etapa, en parte, ajustando por la posición de salida. De este modo, quienes abran ruta se verán beneficiados si hacen un mejor trabajo y quienes parten atrás no tendrán argumentos para levantar o derechamente parar antes de llegar a la meta. La fórmula exacta que se usará en el Dakar se presentará más adelante.

Otra modificación importante tiene que ver con evitar que los pilotos se sigan y eviten navegar por si solos en la especial. Esto también distorsiona las posiciones y privilegia a pilotos que no necesariamente tienen la mejor habilidad en la hoja de ruta, sino que son buenos acelerando detrás de otros pilotos. Para esto, se repartirán roadbooks distintos aleatoriamente a los pilotos, que tendrán dos rutas alternativas en secciones largas donde los Waypoints no se encuentran exactamente en los mismos lugares. Así, seguir a otro piloto podría ser muy costoso, ya que podría ir con el roadbook contrario. En ese caso, un piloto estaría corriendo riesgo de saltarse Waypoints o tener que devolverse. 

La última innovación deportiva tiene que ver con dos clasificaciones alternativas: Una lista Factory para los pilotos de punta y una lista Explorers para pilotos amateurs, en la cual serán valoradas sus aptitudes en una grilla más pareja y con otros premios. Una motivación extra para pilotos con menos experiencia que quieran dar lo mejor de ellos en la ruta.

En cuanto a lo deportivo, si bien esto puede evolucionar como en otros años, el Dakar se meterá de lleno en el Empty Quarter en esta edición. La carrera tendrá una ruta de costa a costa, desde el Mar Rojo hasta el Golfo Pérsico. La largada será en un nuevo campamento aislado en el borde con el Mar Rojo llamado Sea Camp. Debido a esto, se priorizará la inspección técnica en el Circuito de Paul Ricard en Francia y no en Jeddah como en ediciones anteriores. La idea del Sea Camp es un ambiente relajado dentro de la competencia, donde los participantes puedan compartir y prepararse para la aventura. Luego, las 15 etapas avanzarán hasta el Empty Quarter donde habrá tres especiales incluyendo una etapa maratón. Esto se ha vuelto posible gracias a una nueva ruta abierta hacia Omán en el Empty Quarter. Finalmente, la carrera enfilará al norte y terminará en el Golfo Pérsico en la ciudad de Dammam.

Finalmente, se volverá a impulsar vehículos de propulsión alternativa. Este año, se pondrá foco en los combustibles alternativos, con varios participantes intentando desarrollar autos con esta tecnología más sustentable.

Las inscripciones se abren mañana 6 de junio.

My opinion in three sentences:

Whilst still an enjoyable read, I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the first, finding it a little more predictable and a little less distinct from other similar stories. Above all, I think the characterisation let this one down, with protagonist Darcie not feeling her age and many of the side characters playing into standard stereotypes and tropes. That being said, I definitely appreciated the reappearance of familiar favourites from book one (and hope for something similar in book three as well!)

(Without spoiling anything) the best bit:

Much as with its prequel, I thought the setting was a strong USP for the book, both in terms of its originality and its presentation. Granted, this actually saw several different settings given that a large focus was on a cruise, but each was well-delivered and had a good sense of atmosphere. I know book three is set in the more familiar Cornwall, but I hope it still manages to craft a larger-than-life sense of place like in the first two.

A warning for the book:

The characters and characterisation in book one were among my favourite elements. Sadly, in book two, they felt like jerkily animated clichés, and many of the side characters lacked much depth at all. The returnees (by and large - I'm not so convinced when it comes to the protagonist) were as good as before, but overall the standard didn't feel as high as in the prequel.
