➵ HEADCANON 016  ➵ ▒   LADY MARIAN OF KNIGHTON
Tumblr media
haha nope im turning it into a proper lil meta .
Tumblr media
HISTORY .
robin has known marian his entire life . or nearly his entire life . he has known her all of her life , the five months between them makes all the difference as far as he's concerned . ( i am the oldest , marian , you have to listen to me ! ) it wasn't until the age of five, when he and his father moved back to LOCKSLEY that they became friends . the daughter of the sheriff of nottingham . the pair of them causing trouble , racing through the halls of nottingham castle , guaranteed to sneak off together when robert's father attended the sheriff's meetings . it wasn't until the age of eleven that they found out they had been promised to each other ----under none other than king henry's suggestion--- but it didn't really change anything . they were friends . they were children . they were honest with each other in a way that they never were and could never be with other people . there was no one that they trusted more than each other . they were children and then they grew up , with the ever present promise thrumming between them until they were properly engaged at seventeen years old . but it was always going to be a long-er engagement with plans for a proper wedding suitable of someone of his standing .   royal attendance was to be expected . and then robin left . answering the newly crowned king rchard's personal summon to war had been robin's choice but ending their engagement had been marian's . and then robin just feels lost. because his future always had her in it , and now it does not . he does not know how to think of his life without considering her in it . and then robin came back . and neither of them knew really where they stood . he was haunted by war . she was outraged by how he had left her     ( and how society had blamed her , insisted there was something wrong with her and that was why their engagement ended )   and they agree that something needs to be done but they fundamentally disagree on how to do it . and it just causes more fights . . . but the RESPECT and TRUST is still there .
DYNAMIC .
because robin and marian were of such similar ages there was never really a belief or understanding that robin was superior to her . this was aided by edward's upbringing of marian , and that there was no one robin respected more than edward . they always treated each other as EQUALS . and that remained even as they grew up . they were each other's safe spaces , the only person in the world they could be truly honest with . with late nights spent sitting on the roof of knighton manor talking quietly , in their own little world in the darkness . they never undermined one another , they never talked ill of each other to different people , they defended each other fiercely and with nothing but respect . they fight because they are each other's safe spaces . because they can lose their temper because it's safe to do so . because they need some kind of outlet for how they are feeling and just need someone to listen . robin would cut off his own arm if it would make her happy , if it would keep her safe , and most importantly she knows that . this SAFETY and EQUALITY is why robin doesn't doubt that marian can look after herself . because he knows exactly what she can do . because they do not keep secrets to each other and i have never lied to you . but it is why marian can read him like a book , she knows all of his tells , she knows who he is pretending to be today just by the way he holds his shoulders ( the outlaw , the lord , the earl , just robin ) ultimately , this is why they fall into step with each other so often , because by each other's side is where they are so used to being .

Read the full article

The crew trade in their sea-fairing ways for forest living and swap their swords for bows however, not everyone is happy to give up their old life and some wonder if there are alliances to be made within the walls of Nottingham Castle.

Michael Knighton tâng bóng biểu diễn tại Old Trafford

Glory - Critical Response
Glory is a 1989 historical war drama film directed by Edward Zwick. The film is about black soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and their commanding officer: Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The film explores Colonel Shaw’s leadership from training to battle and the numerous bureaucratic procedures and issues which he faces along the way due to the skin color of the men under his command. The movie also explores the relationships between a particular group of soldiers and their character development throughout the story. This critical response will explore the portrayal of the unit during recruitment and training, in addition to the Assault on Fort Wagner.
In the movie, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment appeared to be under equipped initially. In reality, Governor Andrews ensured that the regiment was provided all the necessary equipment upon arrival to the training camp, which they were and never actually had to threaten a quartermaster for boots [Schiller, 2021]. In addition, the enlisted men of the 54th were by no means escaped illiterate field hands as the movie makes them out to be. Governor Andrews ensured that those recruited into the ranks of the 54th were only fit and literate men meaning that only the highest quality of men were permitted to join [Schiller, 2021]. Another element of the training of the regiment which was not accurate was the whipping of soldiers which was definitely not allowed in the Union Army [Schiller, 2021]. Elements such as the lack of supplies, unfit men and flogging of men were simply added to the movie in order to enhance the storyline and do not actually depict what went on in military units at the time.
The movie’s scene where the 54th Massachusetts Regiment assaults Fort Wagner in South Carolina is regarded as one of the most realistic depictions of combat during the American Civil War [Knighton, 2017]. Warfare at the time was very much as displayed in the movie with regards to the constant suicidal charges under musket and artillery fire. In addition, the death of Colonel Shaw in battle really did happen and at the time the death of a field officer was not uncommon and was glorified. In modern wars, colonels are not often seen in front of their regiments charging at the enemy while during the Civil War and before, officers were expected to lead from the front and death was a glorious ordeal in battle. The setting and the terrain of the scene are accurate, in addition to the timing of the sunset and onset of darkness which helped the stylistic element of the movie in making it more dramatic [Knighton, 2017]. It was also accurately shown how the battle ended, with many soldiers of the 54th being killed, with their colonel among them. The men were buried in an unmarked grave by the Confederate States Army which was meant as an insult, but Colonel Shaw’s father felt it was the most appropriate place for burial; with his men [Knighton, 2017].
In conclusion, Glory is a very accurate film which depicts many realities of the American Civil War. Despite the several inaccuracies which occurred in the first half of the film, Glory is an example of being as accurate as an historical film gets because no historical film always gets all of the facts absolutely right mainly for entertainment purposes.

What is WRONG with us, Robin Hood fandom?
I mean WHY WHY WHY aren’t there several thousand blog posts, or pages of posts on some old message board, talking about how Vaisey, Sheriff of Nottingham, has an ICON of himself hanging in his chambers (covering his “safe”) WITH TOTALLY EXTRA BIRDS ON IT?
...did Guy paint it?

all he does is worry . he worries for his gang , he worries for the people of nottingham , he worries for england but , mostly , he worries for MARIAN . he was not sure how to control the worry but he knew that he preferred it to letting his mind wander .
the gang had all returned back to camp late , and they had all immediately fell into their respective bunks but robin . . . he could not . it felt like every muscle was held with tension , and he could not shake the feeling that something WRONG was happening and he was simply lying in the forest allowing it to happen .
so he had shoved his feet back into his boots , grabbed his bow and his sword , and he had run to knighton .
of course there was nothing wrong .
edward and marian's estate was shrouded in the same tranquility and darkness as the rest of the county was at this time of the night . with an ease that only ever came from practice , robin made no noise as he pulled himself up to marian's window . now you are just being weird . he scolded himself as he flipped the lock on her shutters and slipped inside .
he promised himself he was just there to check but the next thing he knew he was sitting on the floor just under the half-opened shutter, moonlight streaming in . his bow dangled from his fingertips , quiver dug into his back and his head dropped , chin to his chest , exhausted . he was just so tired .
he must have fallen asleep . not for long , but when he opens his eyes next he sees @vntagetee looking at him . so she was no longer asleep .          " oh so this is your room . "        he teased her , trying to hide that he was here because he worried , excessively . because he could not sleep until he was sure she was safe . his voice thick with sleep , eyes still hooded , half asleep as he pushed himself so he was at least sitting up straight instead of slumped over .   " i didn't know . "
starter call .

El sexto Mundial para Alonso Edward
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Sir Edward and Guy Parallels
I’ve been thinking, because I’m apparently still not over it, about how the only two characters who actually fight for Marian, for whom she is a priority in and of herself, are Sir Edward and Guy.  There’s that beautiful moment, I believe it’s in episode 1x11 or 1x12, where Robin is bitching and moaning about Marian marrying Guy and Sir Edward takes him aside and says, but in a very dignified, medieval way, “Listen, if you can’t actually help my daughter, you need to stfu.  This ain’t about you.” In response, Robin somehow manages to become even more petulant, but what’s much more important is what we learn about Sir Edward.  He doesn’t just love Marian as his daughter, as a person who belongs to him.  He cares about her psychological well-being, and he has no time for Robin if he’s going to compromise that.  In fact, I believe he’s the only person who ever stands up for Marian to Robin (though the moments where she needs someone to take her side against him are, frankly, countless.)
Of course, Guy does some terrible things to Marian--he’s another person from whom Sir Edward has to protect her--but almost every good, unselfish thing that he does is for her.  Neither he nor Sir Edward are particularly brave--both are more survival oriented than Robin (who has years of combat experience and a band of helpers at his disposal)--but they do brave things for her.  Guy does murder her, but his guilt leaves him so shattered that he begs Robin to kill him.  When he refuses, it’s not for Marian any more than his slaughtering everyone in the forest in 1x12 (everyone, ironically, except the sheriff and Guy!) Marian has nothing to gain from the guards’ death (Robin believes her to be dead) or Guy’s prolonged suffering (after she really is dead).  Robin does these things to make himself feel better.
I don’t mean that Robin doesn’t love her, but her father and Guy love her more than anything else in the world.  For Sir Edward, this is unsurprising.  He’s an old man; his wife is dead, and Marian is his only child. He doesn’t have anyone else to love.  In Guy’s case, were it just a matter of finding another woman who actually wanted him, he could move on and have a family with someone else.  He can’t, though, because Marian is the only person he loves, or can imagine loving.  It’s not a healthy love, but he’s not a healthy person; he couldn’t be with the life he’s had and the complete lack of compassion or support he’s gotten.
A final similarity between these two men who love Marian more than their own lives: whose arms do they die in? A clue.  Not. Marian’s. Robin is the actual in-person recipient of the message Edward so badly wanted to give his daughter, a repudiation of what he said previously about the uselessness of dreams.  The last conversation he has with Marian is full of anger and pain on both sides; she tells him she’s ashamed of him. The lack of reconciliation is heartbreaking, but it’s also striking that while Marian and Robin are both obnoxiously self-righteous, she’s the only person who ever actually suffers for it.
Guy, of course, also dies in Robin’s arms (is he the Grim Reaper?) And, of course, he talks about Marian.  As she was the most important person in his life, he would probably have talked to anyone about her, but Robin isn’t just anyone.  I’ve written about Guy’s death scene to the point of ridiculousness now, but I still can’t get over how little Guy’s last words about Marian--”she was always yours”--are in line with his feelings about her and how much they are in line with Robin’s.  Marian made it abundantly clear again and again that she had no interest in belonging to Guy.  She humiliated him at the altar, she refused to marry him even to save her own life, even when she believes she’s about to die.  But after all of that, even after finding out that she’s in cahoots with Robin, he still loves her.  But here, in this scene, the language is rather telling.  Guy doesn’t say “she chose you,” or “she loved you.” Marian’s decisions and feelings don’t matter; what does is Robin’s ownership of her.  It still feels to me as though it’s not just Sir Edward and Guy being cheated out of truly cathartic deaths but Marian being cheated out of her due: reconciliation in her father’s case and credit with knowing her own mind in Guy’s.

Robin Hood Rewatch: 1x13 A Clue: No
Tumblr media
“Previously on” recaps can be annoying, but there is an art to it and I love a good one. This is a very, very good one, summarising the last episode with ramping tension as the music builds, then cuts to a different take of the last scene as the theme song starts, and we’re into the opening credits.
This is a long one, so it’s going under the cut:
Guy estimates that the “inner circle” of Robin’s gang is “a dozen at the most” and I find it very funny that neither he nor Vaisey have twigged that it’s always the same five people around him. What’s more annoying than funny is that they don’t know how many are in the “outer circle” because that really should have been A Thing in the show (Forrest and Hanton should have come back to guest star! I will never let this go!) After all, we see Little John with more men in the first episode, there are other outlaws in the forest/across the shire that are either working with Robin, or pose a risk to them, and I wish this had been explored.
Tumblr media
Djaq manhandling and holding her sword to Pitts’s throat - I love Djaq.
The first arrow Robin shoots is intended for Vaisey, but one of the guards inconveniently walks in front and gets it in the chest. The second arrow is intended for Vaisey as well but he ducks (”my tooth!”) so we can’t fault the writing for a credible attempt at Why Doesn’t Robin Just Kill The Sheriff, because in this scene at least, he tries.
Bye Pitts. You certainly were.
I actually really love this scene (which probably seemed odd given the high body count), but Robin drawing his sword and charging, with Much, Djaq, and John backing him up to avenge Marian’s apparent death/make a final stand, as the music shifts from the jaunty Rescue Theme to Marian’s Theme, just gets me every time.
Although thanks to the cast commentary, I can’t unsee Djaq flipping that guy over her head twice, but hey, it’s a badass move. Clearly they didn’t shoot enough coverage of this fight, because we get the same action from several different angles.
Other than the flashback in episode 8, I think this is the only time we see Robin in Crusader mode, and just how lethal he (and the gang) can be when unleashed and with nothing to lose. Even when the enemy retreats Robin remains kind of wild-eyed with rage unsated, and it takes a beat for him to snap out of it. It’s symbolism time - he sticks his sword in the ground and leaves it there, and we don’t see it again this episode (or much in season 2).
There’s some nice acting going on from everyone in this scene - just utter exhaustion, Allan and Will oblivious to why the rest are so distraught, Much taking it upon himself to tell them but can’t say the words, and Robin with the finality of “she’s dead.” Their faces!
Tumblr media
Djaq is still holding two swords as she enters the cave, which is a nice character beat - no doubt the fight also brought back unpleasant memories/triggers for her, and she remains on edge, for the moment unwilling to give up her defences even when the threat is gone.
I really love this scene too (the gang mourning Marian) and I think it’s quite deftly written - Djaq’s immediate reaction being the importance of a quick burial (as per Islamic tradition), Robin trying to keep it together, attempting to ask John/Will to build a coffin but unable to, so deflecting to ask Djaq to prepare Marian’s body, before trying twice again; John soothing him and taking charge. Will’s single tear and speaking of Marian’s goodness. Much responding with “Good? Oh, she was... She was...” looking to Robin because of course his thoughts are for Robin’s grief before his own, and also that his own relationship with Marian was complex. Allan: “She was alright...yeah” that says so much, and of course John’s “Her, we liked.” Again, some fine acting, kudos everyone.
“I loved her and I never told her” is ironic because Robin still won’t tell her until halfway through the next season, and if he had in the aftermath of her apparent death he could have spared himself a lot of the angst of the rest of the episode. But of course he doesn’t tell her, doesn’t learn from this moment, because emotions are hard, and sometimes we make the same mistakes over and over again.
I really love that it’s Allan that notices that Marian is alive, and his little “told ya” flourish.
Score note: while Marian is “dead” her Theme is strings, when she opens her eyes, it’s back to the guitar.
Tumblr media
Guy’s guilt in finding out his impending marriage to Marian is based on false pretenses - would he still have forced the marriage if he’d known that from the start?
Djaq still has her two swords as they take Marian back to Knighton.
Guy, if your first instinct when told Marian is not at home is that she’s run away rather than marry you...maybe take a hint? “She cannot run from me” is a big yikes, and this confuses me as to Guy’s motivation in this scene. Did he intend to tell Marian the truth, but then convince himself otherwise (because “the excitement of the wedding” =/= “the wedding excites her”), but then why so angry when he thinks shes run? The difference between getting someone go/being left, I suppose.
Illness is a perfectly plausible explanation for delaying the wedding that no one seems to think of.
Edward is actually pretty bang on in this scene with Robin from a father’s perspective, telling him to let Marian go if he cannot stop it, and do the right thing. On the other hand...
“I am sick of doing the right thing” is why Robin is such a compelling character for me - because it is hard to always be good, to be held to that higher standard, and make the unselfish choice. I enjoy narratives that explore that, and this show is surprisingly unflinching about it, exemplified by:
The next scene, which is one of the most emotionally brutal/hard to watch of the entire show, in which Robin lashes out and does everything to drive Much away, including calling him “a pox”  and a “small man” until Much’s heart visibly breaks.
Tumblr media
Now I don’t want to excuse Robin here, because he is objectively awful to someone who doesn’t deserve it, who is trying to give him support but also telling him some much needed hard truths (even if it is slightly self-serving, which is what what seems to set Robin off). But at the end of the day, if he loves Marian he needs to accept that it is her choice to marry Guy, to “do the right thing” to (she thinks) protect her father - and later of he does just that. For now Edward and Much are both right, it is more important for him to try and protect the king from Vaisey, because if he is ousted and Richard back on the throne so many lives would be improved, including the people of Locksley. But Robin has been pushed to breaking point all season, and has now snapped and can’t see reason, but is stuck in his own grief/rage.
But unlike previously, when Robin said regrettable things in the heat of the moment and then immediately took them back, this is a calculated attack designed to hurt Much the most, because he loves Robin so much that it takes A Lot to push him away. It’s a bold move to make your hero so unlikable in such a moment, because Robin really is unforgivably cruel here, and trust the audience to understand why. I mean, I don’t want to bang on about the PTSD, but it’s (partly) the PTSD, based on a triggering, precipitating event causing a self-destructive spiral. Robin needs some Ye Olde Therapy.
Tumblr media
For all the talk about Robin getting his title and lands back, nothing is said about what happens to Gisborne once he does, other than that they can’t prove he was the one who tried to assassinate Richard. Because really, Richard probably would believe Robin even though the tattoo was burned away, and Guy’s certainly committed other crimes that could be testified to just like they’re intending for Vaisey - and let’s be real, it’s not like a king needs evidence to order someone’s death (hello, season 2 finale). Boom - Guy executed, marriage to Marian annulled, problem solved!
So, the scene between Marian and Guy, in which Marian is more concerned with whether or not Guy tried to kill the king than the fact that he stabbed her. But its understandable, because Marian thinks there’s no way out that doesn’t risk her father’s life, and it’s easier to convince herself that maybe Guy didn’t do it to make the best of things. I think she does have some kind of feelings for him, or is at least moved by his feelings for her, and believes if nothing else she can influence him/continue working from the inside; giving up the mantle of the Nightwatchman but doing the same work (in a different way) as Lady Gisborne.
Tumblr media
And then it’s Robin/Marian angst, round 3, and it’s a far cry from their interaction in the cave milliseconds away from “I love yous” - in both tone and body language they’re back in defensive positions talking past one another. The tension, it be thick.
Marian is making her best rationalisation with “deprived of love” and Robin not at all buying the Woobification 101. Once she tells him her decision to marry Guy, he accepts it, but it’s Marian’s reaction that’s telling, she’s surprised that he doesn’t argue, deep down she wants him to fight for her, to say that the real reason she shouldn’t marry Guy is because he loves her. It’s quite a contrast from the previous scene where Guy was very open about how he feels about her, while Robin deflects, but while she was conflicted about Guy trying to kiss her, she’s frustrated, disappointed, and angry when Robin leaves.
But really, this is rather unfair of Marian, because Robin did already declare himself in the cave (”we should be together”) without her reciprocation, so expecting him to take the first step again without any encouragement is a bit much.
Tumblr media
Would a depressed person sit slumped against a tree all night?
“But by taking Marian in holy wedlock, I will wash away those crimes. Her pure heart will cleanse mine.” Yeah...not going to touch that one. I appreciate that there’s a lot going on with Guy and many, many people find it compelling, but I’m afraid it’s not really a narrative that interests me.
Speaking of pure hearts: Much. Faced with the same choice he was counseling Robin on, but with the additional wrinkle of knowing the king’s an imposter, he still decides to stop the wedding. “Her heart belongs to another” is A Moment and I don’t know exactly why but I find his very soft pleas following this and calling her “my lady” very affecting.
Tumblr media
She’s beauty and she’s grace, she punched Guy in the face.
“A trap. I knew it.” I haaaaate this line. NO YOU DIDN’T KNOW IT ROBIN YOU KNEW NOTHING OF THE KIND IF YOU HAD KNOWN YOU WOULD BE EVEN MORE OF A DICK FOR LEAVING UGGGHHHH.
Tumblr media
“We can’t be seen together” Right in front of my salad two guards on front gate duty, who get front row tickets to the kiss. Look at them! They’re right there! This show drives me absolutely bonkers sometimes.
I do love this dress though.
“An audience with the king has been suspended!” Going out on one last pun.
Regardless, I really love this episode. Despite the lack of fallout from the emotional wringer they all went through, I can’t help but smile when the gang does their silly little jump for joy at the end.
