I keep thinking how sad Quill Kipps' whole deal is. He's brought up as a child soldier and he becomes quite good at it, good enough to work at one of the best agencies. He works hard, suffers, loses people, carries on because it's all got to be worth it. He ages in a system that prioritizes youth and feels everything special about him slowly starting to slip away. He has put everything into being an elite agent and he's about to age out of everything he's ever known.
He gets tangled with an unruly bunch of independent agents. They're annoying rule breakers but god they're amazing. Part of his beef with them is he can feel their talent rolling off them in waves making him acutely aware of how his is almost used up. When it becomes unsafe for him to pretend any more, he does what other agents do and becomes a supervisor. He keenly feels the separation from himself and agents in the field and finds he now can't just sit on the sidelines and watch others put their lives at stake when he can't help.
He's adrift, nothing to his name but his old reputation and a set of skills that are no longer useful. He ends up tangled back with the independents because they trust him - need him - and by god does he want to be needed. He wants so desperately to be part of their world again. They find some goggles that allow him to see visitors again and he's like a kid at Christmas. He can finally be involved again! It doesn't have to be over!
While working with them he learns everything he was taught to believe in was a lie, the prestigious agency he gave his entire being for is causing the rise of spirits. Once his involvement is found out, he loses his pension and privileges. He is cut off entirely from his old support system. With nothing left, the independents take him in. He's useful but he knows it's more out of pity. He works hard, almost dies and fights to dismantle the very establishment he spent his best years serving. The battle is won but things stay the same for him.
He is still a young adult clinging with aching fingers onto his childhood and teen years because that was the only way he had purpose. His closest friends are still young teens, five or more years younger than him. He chastises them for their childishness even as he desires more than anything to be one of them. He is Peter Pan, refusing to grow up because there is nothing for him as an adult in haunted England. He does not even look towards his future because he cannot let go of his shining past where he was actually needed.

"It's so hard to teach kids consent 🥺" WRONG! Library books be upon ye!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes Means Yes, by Elaine Tai: "The various, "everyday" scenarios include the desire to touch someone's hair, play that can frustrate or hurt someone, and how someone might feel uncomfortable being touched or approached. Children will learn the importance of using their voice and listening when others use theirs, and parents can use the scenes as a foundation for further conversation."
Connor Kissed Me, by Zehava: "After Connor kisses Miriam on the playground, she tells a number of people who have differing reactions to the incident, until her mother encourages her to listen to and stand up for her own feelings."
Talking to kids about important topics goes way easier when you give them a basic expectation of what these experiences and situations might look like!
Additionally:
Emphasize to children that barring all necessary medical or safety interventions, their body belongs to them, and shouldn't be touched without permission. Yes, this does mean the conversation about vaccinations is going to take longer than usual. Consider it a trade-off.
Emphasize the affirmation, not the rejection! Sometimes people say no, and we respect that, and sometimes friends say YES to hugs and cheek kisses, and we get to share that with them!
There are plenty of alternatives to hugs and kisses! Don't want a hug? How about a high five? How about a pinky-promise? If you can't hold hands, why don't you hold onto my jacket, or I can hold onto your sleeve? Teaching kids how to ask for and offer alternatives when their peer says "No" goes a long way.
Encourage little kids not to keep "body secrets" at the request of others from their parents. If someone is asking them to hide something about their body from their parent, that's a huge concern.
Ask before hugging. Ask before kissing. Make other adults— yes, even nosy relatives—ask your child before a hug or a kiss. You can even model asking for physical affection with the co-parent if you have one. Modeling respect is worth it.
Lots of daycares are working harder to teach consent to younger children at younger ages. Some daycares are very proactive. Some are not. If you are in a position where you are interviewing multiple facilities about whether or not to place your child there, it's something that you can ask. "Do you have a stance on hugging between children, or between children and adults? What does it look like? Do you encourage boundary setting?"
And I like to think that we're beyond telling children that their bullies are secretly interested in them or want their attention but stop telling children that the other children who are harassing them are showing interest. 🔪 Stop it.
Children deserve safe, strong, respected boundaries! 🫂

I ate a homemade breakfast of chocolate-flavored coffee and 'loaded' avocado toast this morning at the bus stop.
Got to campus with over an hour before lab class. So I sat and read my library book. Ended up finishing it.
Today's chem lab was about the Conductivity of different compounds. We have to use the data to make scatter charts and them use those scattered charts to finish the lab worksheet. It's all due by next Thursday.
Took the kids to the playground and then out to the diner for supper.
Now at home, I'm deep cleaning my room since I haven't been able to since classes first started.

I completely don't understand how were people so mad at Suvi for the "Bring them to me" thing.
First, the last time she didn't wait for Steel, a bunch of people died and her own friends almost died in Port Talon. Again a reminder that they were level 1 characters tackling colossal troubles.
Second, Steel is basically Suvi's mother here!!! She's the only family Suvi has, that any of them had up until that point. They don't have an older authoritative figure to whom they could turn to except for her.
Third, Suvi has grown up in this world, by these rules, cared for and taught by these people, who can judge her for not becoming a true rebel in the span of very fraught three months of half-adventuring? Especially when it was the citadel's title that saved her ass multiple times in the past.
Fourth, as far as both she and Ame knew, Ame would die in the council of witches without Suvi, why would she go without her? Ame had this half hope Suvi would follow, but again, only half and a 50/50 bet when talking of her life is too high as risk.
And yet at the end of all of this, she goes to Ame's aid even with her broken heart because her best friend's life is more important than her pride.

it’s easy to ignore the stupid bits of age gap discourse bc people always say things like “people in their early 20s are all basically children with no life experience, the only possible life status they can have is University Student”. people who say stuff like that have a severe case of Not Knowing Any Working Class People disorder and therefore do not need to be taken seriously in any way.

"From a very early age the child becomes part of a pattern he never fully understands and is powerless to change. It is a pattern that is made up of rituals - of form periods, morning assemblies, lessons that follow each other in quick succession for no apparent reason, bells rung by other people that govern his changes of activity, milk, school dinners, homework. His life is part of a scheme that has been devised by people he does not know, and into which he is expected to fit without question.
And it is here that we come to the real content of our educational structure. At school, the child is taught by experience that it is normal for other people to organize his life. He will be told in Civics or History that he lives in a democracy, which means that people govern themselves. But he will know as an experienced fact that he must expect to be governed by other people who know better than he does."
- Albert Hunt, The Tyranny of Subjects, in Education for Democracy (2nd ed., 1972)

Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld lecturing on sexology in Different From the Others (1919 dir. Richard Oswald), a silent film arguing against German legal code Section 175, which criminalized homosexuality. Parts of the film are lost due to the later Nazi government's attempt to destroy all copies of it.
