#OTD in 1607 – The Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell, along with a close circle of family and associates, boarded a ship at Rathmullan on Lough Swilly, bound for Spain.
This event has become known as ‘The Flight of the Earls’ and is widely regarded as one of the most enigmatic events in Irish history, virtually defying explanation. A French ship sailed from the northern harbour of Rathmullan in Lough Swilly. On board were Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Rory O’Donnell, Earl of Tyrconnell, together with more than ninety of their family and followers. The ship…

A bronze sculpture commemorating the Flight in Rathmullan, County Donegal
The Flight of the Earls (Irish: Imeacht na nIarlaí) took place in September 1607, when Hugh O'Neill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone, and Rory O'Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell, and about ninety followers, left Ulster in Ireland for mainland Europe. Their permanent exile was a watershed event in Irish history, symbolising the end of the old Gaelic order.

The mellow charm of Newport House, County Mayo, a property dating from several periods of the 18th century. Overlooking the Newport river, the house was built in the late 18th century by the O’Donnells, descendants of Hugh O’Donnell, Earl of Tyrconnell. WILLIAM HENRY
Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh
(born 1743 - died 1805)
Tumblr media
pictured above is a portrait of the Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, by Francis Cotes from 1769
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
SERIES - On this day August Edition: William Henry died on 25 August 1805.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
WILLIAM HENRY was born in 1743 at Leicester House, in London. He was the third son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gota.
Being a paternal grandson George II, King of Great Britain he was a member of the British branch of the HOUSE OF HANOVER and a PRINCE OF GREAT BRITAIN from birth. Though he was known by his father's title as PRINCE WILLIAM OF WALES.
When he was eight years old his father died leaving his older brother Prince George as the first-in-line to the British throne.
In 1760 his brother succeeded their grandfather as George III, King of Great Britain. And in 1764 his brother created him as DUKE OF GLOUCESTER AND EDINBURGH and EARL OF CONNAUGHT.
By 1766 he married in secret to MARIA, one of the illegitimate daughters of Edward Walpole and his mistress Dorothy Clement, and they had three children (check the list below). She was the widow of James Waldegrave, 2nd Earl Waldegrave and already had three daughters.
As his wedding occurred before the passing of the Royal Marriage Acts of 1772, there was no need for the King's approval and all of his children were legitimate and were in the line of succession to the British throne.
He served in the Army and wished for a field command in the American Revolutionary War of Independence, but his brother King George III would not give him any roles. Later he wished to fight in the Prussian Army at the War of the Bavarian Succession but Friedrich II (the Great), King of Prussia also did not accept his offer.
It is believed that he had an illegitimate daughter born in 1782 by Lady Almeria Carpenter, daughter of George Carpenter, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell and Frances Clifton.
Later in his life the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland were unified, around 1800/01, creating the Kingdom of the United Kingdom. So his brother became the first Monarch as George III, King of the United Kingdom and he became a PRINCE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM.
The Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh died aged 61, on 25 August 1805, at Gloucester House, his London residence.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
WILLIAM HENRY and his wife MARIA had three children...
Princess Sophia of Gloucester - unmarried;
Princess Caroline of Gloucester - died aged eight months;
William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh - husband of Princess Mary of the United Kingdom.
And he may have had illegitimate children...
With an unknown woman...
Louisa Maria La Coast - wife of Godfrey Macdonald, 3rd Baron Macdonald.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
His only son Prince William Frederick succeeded on his titles and later in life married to one of the daughters of King George III.
Considering that neither of his two surviving legitimate children had offspring of their own he has no legitimante living descendants.
Though, through his possible illegitimate daughter, he may be an ancestor of Godfrey Madconald, the 8th and current Baron Macdonald.

5 Irish whiskey cocktails that are perfect for St. Patrick's Day
Photo by Zandy Mangold / Used with permission
In the U.S., St. Patrick's Day usually means lots of green beer and cheap whiskey, typically ad nauseum. (And, often, literally to the point of nausea.)
But let's say you're tired of serving up the same old swill—what then?
The answer: Step up your cocktail game with these inspired next-level mixes that capture the Irish spirit of the day—Irish whiskey, obviously—and combine it with some masterful add-ins. With complex flavors and clever flavor combinations, these are the ideal drinks for sipping and savoring without feeling the need to chug a 12-pack of Harp by yourself. (But if you do inevitably end up a little cobwebby the day after, here are 10 life-changing hangover helpers.)
Here are five of our favorite Irish whiskey cocktails, courtesy of some of New York City's best bartenders. Sláinte!
5 Irish whiskey cocktails that are perfect for St. Patrick's Day

Spring Dew
This cocktail is inspired by the spring weather in Ireland: "Generally mild and short-lived, but it always leaves people wanting more." says Shawn Chen, beverage director at RedFarm and Decoy in New York City. He likes to make it with Kilbeggan Irish whiskey, a craft whiskey produced by a distillery with a rich history.
Recipe
 - 2 oz Kilbeggan Irish whiskey   - .75 oz Rain Water Madeira   - .25 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur  - .25 oz PAMA Liqueur  - .25 oz Gran Classico Bitter   - 2 dashes Mexican Mole Bitters
Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass and add ice. Stir vigorously and strain into an absinthe-rinsed rocks glass with a 2-inch cube. Garnish with a lemon zest.

Layover in Ireland
A modern take on an Irish coffee, this cocktail takes all the classic components and updates them to to feel fresh and sophisticated. "The Tyrconnell Single Malt Irish Whiskey is made at the oldest distillery in Ireland, Kilbeggan Distillery," says Chen. "This single malt whiskey has no age statement, it has tasting notes of toasty malt, graham crackers, caramel, and finishes with a slight burnt sweetness." It's a perfect starter for a day of celebration.
Recipe
 - 1 oz Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey  - .25 oz Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur  - .50 oz Montenegro Amaro   - 1 oz Hot Brewed La Colombe Coffee   - .50 oz Five Spice Syrup  - 1 oz Heavy Cream
Build drink in a coffee mug or coffee glass. Pour in five spice syrup, Domaine de Canton, Montenegro Amaro, Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey, coffee and top with heavy cream. Garnish with grated cinnamon and star anise.

India to Ireland
This cocktail is all about balance. "The freshness of PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur balances out the bitterness out of Darjeeling tea," says Hemant Pathak, mixologist/bar manager at Junoon in New York City, while the combination of the whiskey, pomegranate liquer, and tea "creates a unique smooth, sweet, and slightly earthy taste that sparkles on the tongue." He likes to use Teeling Irish whiskey, "a very approachable small batch whiskey with the influences of a rum cask and higher-percentage alcohol."
Recipe
 - 1.5 parts Teeling Irish Whiskey  - 0.25 parts PAMA Liqueur  - 0.25 parts Vermouth   - 0.75 parts Darjeeling Tea  - 1 bar spoon honey water
Stir ingredients and drain into a coupe glass. Garnish with star anise.

Euthanasia
Though undeniably strong, the Euthanasia is "grassy, has apple notes, and is non-chill filtered so it has great texture," says Jesse Vida, bar manager at BlackTail in New York City. In this (hopefully not literally) deadly cocktail, the Irish whiskey is "used as a bridge to soften the intensity of 100-proof apple brandy,"
Recipe
 - 1 oz Laird's Apple Brandy   - .75 oz Powers Signature Irish Whiskey  - .5 oz Cardamaro  - 1 tsp Ramazzotti    - 1 tsp Benedictine   - .5 tsp Apricot Eau De Vie  - .5 tsp Maple Syrup
Stir and serve in a cocktail glass. Garnish with orange twists.

The Rattlesnake
This spirited libation is Vida's modern adaptation of the classic Rattlesnake cocktail, which traditionally blends rye whiskey, lemon, absinthe, sugar, and egg white. "In our version," says Vida, "we use Green Spot Pot Irish whiskey, a 12-year-aged Irish whiskey with a fruit softness that plays well with the smoky fennel notes of the drink."
Recipe
 - 1 oz Green Spot Irish Whiskey   - 1 oz lemon juice  - 3/4 oz fennel root syrup  - 1/2 oz earl grey tea infused Laphroaig Scotch  - 1/4 oz dolin blanc  - 1/4 oz dry vermouth  - 2 dashes Chocolate Mole bitters  - 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters  - Egg White
Shaken, sour glass, an expression of lemon oil.

They…

#OTD in 1689 – Siege of Derry began.
In 1685, the Roman Catholic James II came to the throne of England. His agent Richard Talbot, earl of Tyrconnell, started to dismiss Protestant officers from the army in Ireland, replacing them with Roman Catholics. For English Protestants, the last straw came when the birth of a son to his second wife meant that his Protestant daughter Mary would not succeed to the throne. In the summer of 1688,…
