Kilmainham Gaol
Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland’s emergence as a modern nation from the 1780s to the 1920s. Attractions include a major exhibition detailing the political and penal history of the prison and its restoration. Located approximately two miles outside of Dublin city centre, it was built as a county gaol to…

Countess Constance Georgine Markievicz
Tumblr media
Founder of Cumann na mBán (the women’s branch of the Irish Citizens Army), she was in command of Stephen’s Green during the 1916 Rising and the only commander not executed by the British army “on account of the prisoner’s sex”, to which she responded “I do wish you lot had the decency to just shoot me.”
First woman elected as a member of the Irish Parliament. First woman elected to the British Parliament. First woman to be made a minister in any European government.
And never sat a day in any of those positions. Pre-Independence Dáil was illegal. As a Republican she refused to take her seat in Westminster. After independence she sided with anti-treaty forces in the civil war. After the civil war she was again elected but died before she could take her seat.

Just started watching Derry Girls and it's obviously fantastic but my favorite running gag is how James is always told to fuck off and not really included(because the whole English thing)to the point that, after knowing about this show for like 4 years, I had no clue there was a dude in the group. We love the energy.🤩

"It’s the simplicity of telling a story about a breakup, really, and to be as truthful and to show the pain of that. More than anything, that was it. To capture that juxtaposed with the Irish Civil War helped bring in interesting metaphorical angles to it, and show how a simple falling out can can lead to horror, to war, and to unforgivable acts. But the very initial impulse was to capture the sadness of a breakup.
[...] Sometimes it’s worse than a romantic breakup. You can work out or work through a romantic one, and you can understand why someone might not want to share a romantic love with you. But for a friendship, it’s much harder. It goes to the core of who you are. When they opt out, who are you, after that? How do you see yourself? That was some of the interesting things that we explored."

Today in 1921, the Anglo Irish treaty was signed.
Effectively rubber stamping the partition of Ireland.
And some fuckers out there still think we deserved it!
Why don’t we split THEIR countries in half and see how they like it! (HYPOTHETICAL!)
And no I’m not lionising the anti-treaty faction.
Most of them were dogshit reactionaries what didn’t give a shit about the north either.

The Banshees of Inisherin (dir. Martin McDonagh) x VIFF 2022.
Starring McDonagh’s In Bruges duo, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, as feuding former best friends in 1923 Ireland near the end of the Irish Civil War on the tiny fictional island of Inisherin, where everyone knows each other's business, just off the Irish west coast, it's a deceptively simple premise commenting on the twentieth century’s series of European conflict.
Screened at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations program.

#OTD in 1914 – Cumann na mBan, Irish women’s Republican movement, was founded.
Ní saoirse go saoirse na mban. Over 100 women gathered in Dublin to discuss the role of women in the lead-up to revolution. The meeting, at Wynn’s Hotel, was presided over by Agnes O’Farrelly. The first provisional committee of Cumann na mBan included Agnes MacNeill, Nancy O’Rahilly, Mary Colum, Jenny Wyse Power, Louise Gavan Duffy and Elizabeth Bloxham. They adopted a constitution which stated…
