An Offering to Krakoa
Today is Charles’ wedding day.
What’s A Little Sex Between Friends
Erik’s been nursing the same glass of wine for the past twenty minutes, absently rolling the crystal stem between his palms and studiously avoiding the elephant in the room.
Their plan had been meticulously mapped out for weeks before the arrival of the Spring Ball, where all of Westchester’s elite would be congregating at the Summers House for an evening with their peers.
A Surprise Visit
It’s been almost a month since his arrival here in Genosha, and Charles doesn’t know if he’ll ever get used to it; the litany of warm sunny days rolling into endless, balmy nights.
Peace Is Finally An Option
The aftermath at least is a familiar thing, as Charles wades through the wreckage that’s left behind, the task falling on his shoulders once again to deal with the humans and get his people home.
The Definition of Insanity
The definition of insanity, Charles thinks, is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
The carriage came for Erik mid-morning, clattering through the mud caked streets of Varre, winding its way through the tiny village behind a contingent of the King’s personal guard.
Gods or Mortals
The fire is burning low when the knock finally comes, the moon well along its path across the midnight sky.
A Suitable Replacement
On the morning of his sixteenth birthday, Kurt led him outside after breakfast and presented him with his very own mare; a beautiful, dark chestnut English Thoroughbred, worth more than all the other horses stabled at Graymalkin.
Rock and A Hard Place
In hindsight, moving into an older building might not have been the best or brightest idea Charles ever had, even if the rent is dirt cheap and the location close to his work.
Wicked Vice, Secret Indulgence
Stryker is already waiting in the suite, tie loose and nursing a scotch when Erik arrives for their session.
Erik’s been on suppressants for almost fifteen years, unwilling to cede control and be rendered helpless during his heats.
An Office Affair
Erik is already in his office when Charlie arrives at seven thirty a.m., with a black coffee (for him) and a latte (for her) in hand.
The Master of Charlton Park
The first time Charles met Erik Lehnsherr was at a spring ball hosted by the MacTaggerts, where the new Earl of Suffolk had been the guest of honor.
Nathaniel Essex tightens the last of the restraints and takes a step back from the bed to admire his handiwork.
Welcome to Genosha
Excitement keeps Charles awake for much of his long, transatlantic flight, his mind cycling through a hundred important details related to his trip.
you can never tell
"You can never tell anyone,” Kurt says, an urgent plea to the boy in his arms.
Mein Kleiner Erik
“I have a gift for you.”
Westward by Sea
Preparations for the journey began in earnest in the spring, when the snow melted and construction could begin on skeið for the crossing.
It's Been A Long Time
When Erik woke up that morning he had no idea what the day would bring; that the colorless routine of his everyday life would be utterly upended by an unexpected visitor from his past.
I'm surprised there aren't more fics beginning with just a line of dialogue, as I actually enjoy writing stories starting in the middle of a conversation. Also, most of these have a 'time' element to them - i.e. it happened in spring, or this is the first time etc. Not particular exciting...I hate coming up with first sentences tbh, even more than I hate titles lol.
My favorite out of the ones listed above would have to be from 'It's Been A Long Time'. I think it sets the tone for the story quite well.

On 14 March 1961 an aircraft accident occurred near Yuba City, California. A United States Air Force B-52F-70-BW Stratofortress bomber, AF Serial No. 57-0166, c/n 464155, carrying two nuclear weapons departed from Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento. According to the official Air Force report, the aircraft experienced an uncontrolled decompression that required it to descend to 10,000 feet (3,000 m) in order to lower the cabin altitude. Increased fuel consumption caused by having to fly at lower altitude, combined with the inability to rendezvous with a tanker in time caused the aircraft to run out of fuel. The aircrew ejected safely, and then the unmanned aircraft crashed 15 miles (24 km) west of Yuba City,(1) tearing the nuclear weapons from the aircraft on impact. However, in a 2012 book LTC Earl McGill, a retired SAC B-52 pilot, claims that the aircrew, after an inflight refueling session that provided inadequate fuel, refused the offer of an additional, unscheduled inflight refueling, bypassed possible emergency landing fields and ran out of fuel.(2) The crew ejected, the aircraft broke up and four onboard nuclear weapons were released. The weapons' multiple safety interlocks prevented both a nuclear explosion and release of radioactive material. LTC McGill, based on his SAC experience, blames the aircrew failures on the use of dexedrine to overcome tiredness on the 24-hour flight preceding the accident.
The weapons did not detonate as their safety devices worked properly.(3) A fireman was killed and several others injured in a road accident while en route to the accident scene.(1)

The following timeline is an abridged version of the description transcribed by Oskins and Maggelet(3) from a declassified copy of the original Air Force accident report. Doe 11 was the aircraft call sign. Doe 13 was a second B-52 in formation for the first portion of the flight.
All times are hours and minutes after takeoff.
0:20 – the pilot first noticed excessive hot air coming from the pilots' vents. All attempts to control this hot air were unsuccessful.
6:00 – Mather Command Post contacted the aircraft on HF radio. The heat problem was discussed and wing guidance received. This consisted of several suggested corrective actions which were verified by the pilot as having been used earlier without success.
6:30 – Mather control room called the aircraft on HF radio and discussed the heat problem and the effects of the heat on the aircraft electronics and crew personnel. Wing guidance at this time was to continue the mission.
Speed Dating Under 30 In Yuba City California Right Now
6:50 – Mather control room contacted the aircraft and Wing guidance was to 'continue mission as long as you can; call us back after second refueling tonight and advise us of your status, if it gets intolerable, of course, bring it home.'
11:15 – Mather control called Doe 11 to see if he would complete the mission. At that the response was, 'We are going to try.'
12:35 – Mather control was contacted by Doe 11 and told that Doe 13's refueling was completed and 'we are about ready to take off.' Control asked, 'Your present status . . . has it improved?' The pilot answered 'Negative . . . worse . . . number 3 engine setting at 70% . . . we had it once before and it cleared up but at this time it has not cleared as yet.' Control advised, 'Understand you will proceed on course and we will be looking for you tomorrow.'
14:00 – the outside panel of the pilot's L-4 window shattered. The heat in the cockpit was unbearable at this time and had cracked the glass case for the ball on both pilot's and co-pilot's turn and slip indicators. It is estimated that the upper compartment heat level ranged from 125–160 °F or higher during this period. A decision was made to depressurize the aircraft and attempt to continue the mission. Altitude was 33,500 feet.
14:20 – after 20 minutes of unpressurized flight, the decision was made to descend to 12,000 feet and continue the mission as far as possible at this altitude.
15:00 – Mather control contacted Doe 11 and asked 'Which windshield is cracked and what is your present altitude?' Answer received, 'The L-4 window shattered, heat unbearable at altitude, two sick crew members. We have descended to 12,000 feet and plan to go 150 nautical miles north of TP 3.19 and return direct to Mather.' They were advised to 'proceed as planned, recommend you stay low altitude, give us an estimate on your fuel as soon as you get in close enough to contact us.'
16:50 – Mather control contacted Doe 11 via HF radio requesting ETA to Mather. The aircraft reported, 'We just passed TP 3.19 at 1212Z, estimate 150 nautical miles north of TP 3.19 at 1239Z, ETA to Mather 1755Z.'
18:50 – Mather control contacted the aircraft through HF radio to check his progress.
19:45 – McClellan called for flight plan and altitude required from last position to Mather.
20:30 – aircraft contacted McClellan to ask Early Warning vessel 'Hardware' to look out for them and would like a fix.(a)
21:00 – the aircraft contacted Mather control stating, 'We would like a tanker up here and get a little fuel. We now figure we will be over the field at 14,000 pounds. That is a little light. We would like to have a tanker.' And, control answered Doe 11 'will be cleared for a straight in approach and will have tanker standby . . . we will not launch unless you go below 10,000 pounds.'
Doe 11's ETA to Mather at this time was given as approximately 22:30 hours after takeoff.
For approximately the next hour, several heading deviations up to 30 degrees were made by the pilot of Doe 11 to circumnavigate the weather associated with a front in this area. Turbulence was moderate. It is estimated from study of weather and Doe 11 pilot and navigator interviews that 7 or 8 minutes were lost during this frontal penetration due to these heading deviations.
21:50 – Mather was contacted through HF radio and advised he had, '#1 main tank gauge stuck at 10,030 pounds . . . we are not sure just how much fuel we have in it now. We have No. 2 and one other 1/4 full warning light on and I think it would be a good idea to get that tanker airborne.' Mather Control Room advised, 'We have a tanker airborne. Pick him up at Red Bluff VOR and refuel back in this direction. You might keep in mind, if things get a little close up there, head into Beale AFB.' Later in this same conversation, Mather control indicated, 'We will get it off the ground here ASAP.'
22:10 – Democrat contacted the aircraft on HF advising, 'McClellan is requesting your present position.' The aircraft advised, ' . . . just coasted in and looking for our tanker.' This was the last contact through Democrat HF radio.
22:10 – the tanker was launched.
22:23 – the bomber and the tanker initiated the head on rendezvous at 70 nautical miles. Normal mileage countdown was used and the bomber turned the tanker at 21 NM. This left Doe 11 flying at 280K IAS approximately 11NM behind the tanker after the tanker rolled out on refueling track. The bomber asked the tanker to slow down. The tanker reduced speed to 200K IAS, and then to 185K IAS. The bomber maintained 280K IAS to approximately 2NM behind this tanker, and then lost power. The pilot had warned the crew earlier of the possibility of bailout and he now alerted them to prepare for bailout. He initiated a 30-degree bank to the west toward a clear area as all engines flamed out together at approximately 22:40 hours after takeoff.
The bailout sequence began at approximately 7,000 feet with an outside temperature of approximately 42 degrees, and was normal except the gunner could not jettison his turret despite full strength pull on the inner emergency release handle. The gunner was called forward and bailed out the navigator hatch, using the spare chute in the forward compartment. The pilot continued to guide the aircraft toward a clear area. The crew continued to bail out in order of navigator, spare navigator, spare pilot, EW, gunner, co-pilot and radar navigator. The pilot bailed out at 4,000 feet. The aircraft was trimmed and calculated to be at approximately a 21:1 glide ratio at this time. The aircraft made one complete 360-degree left turn and crashed into a clear flat barley field area 15.75 miles west of Yuba County Airport, California, at approximately 22:50 after takeoff. The aircraft struck the ground at a 15.3-degree left bank and an estimated attitude of 5 degrees nose down at an indicated airspeed of approximately 200 knots. Impact angle was approximately 45 degrees.

If you recognize it--IT AIN'T MINE
Sorry for the OOC bits.
Supper was finished and cleaned up with little in the way of words spoken after that. The evening saw me curling up in my bed with a coffee and the second chapter.
As soon as we were given our holiday leave, we were talking where we were all going to go. I had saved my days off for three months to have an entire week away. Just the same as I had saved as much as I could to be able to afford that first class ticket. Bryn had sent me half of the money, so that helped. As I packed, I called Bryn, just to verify the time I should get there.
The flight itself was really uneventful...unless you count the attendant openly flirting with me. That guy openly offered things that, umm, weren't on the menu, let's say. Now, don't get me wrong, I love flying first class, and I am used to having underwear thrown at me by western audiences, but getting an invitation to join 'The Mile High Club' by a dude, was a little much for me.
'Would be too much for me too'.
By the time the plane landed in L.A., I was thoroughly embarrassed, and a little pissed off. Then there was a two hour layover until my flight to Chicago. That flight was a lot better than the one from Seoul to L.A. No one bothered me. I was just the Asian guy in first class.
After grabbing my bag from baggage claim, I started to walk down to the pick up and drop off, where she said she would meet me. Bryn told me she has an awful time getting through security checkpoints. The machines pick up the studs on her implants. That was an interesting conversation, I learned my big sister had lost all her teeth due to a strange combination of factors. But, she had gotten it all squared away and everything had healed up a while ago.
'She has implants? Hmm.'
As I turned the corner, I heard a soft whistle followed by Bryn shouting.
"Jooheon! Over here, Lil Man."
'Little? He is at least half a foot taller than you!'
I turned towards the yell, and saw her. The buzz cut threw me for a second. "You cut it all off again," I remarked as I noticed her shoulder length hair was much shorter than our last video chat.
"Yep. Long hair is for men and babies, not ladies. Neither man nor bitch should be able to grab a handful and use it against me," she quipped as she ran her hand over the short, spunky, spikes on her pate. "Got your bag," she asked.
Long hair is for men and babies, huh.
"Cool. My truck is this way," she said as she tilted her head to the side. "Let's blow this pop stand."
"What," I asked, laughing as I followed.
"Let's blow this popsicle stand.'
Turning around and walking backwards, she said, "Let's blow this popsicle stand."
'See. I do know some idioms.'
Imagine my surprise when what she simply called 'my truck' was a tiny little Chevy Equinox.
As we stowed my bags in the back seat, I said, "Bryn, this isn't a truck."
"Is to me," she replied as we got into the front and buckled our safety belts. When she started up the engine, the cabin was filled with a haunted music. Then she said, as we backed out of the parking spot, "We gotta stop for gas before we hit the interstate, so, I suggest you visit the men's room before we leave. We still have a four hour drive ahead of us."
As she put it in drive, I replied with, "Are you insinuating I can't control myself?"
"No," she said, matter-of-factly. "I am straight telling you that you have a bladder the size of a walnut and you are riding with a fucking camel."
I laughed, 'I agree. That woman can make an eight hour drive with a bottle of pop and never once need to pee. There will still be soda in her bottle, too. She's a fuckin camel.'
As we pulled away from the gas station, and onto the interstate, She commented on my shirt. "That is a nice color on you, by the way."
"Thanks. I like red."
"I know. Just never had you pegged as a guy who actually looked good in maroon."
I looked down at my shirt. "It's red," I replied.
"No, Dear, it's maroon."
"Agree to disagree. How many times have I told you to just call me 'Honey'?"
"It weirds me out to call my little brother "Honey'. That's a word meant for a significant other. The closest you will EVER get is Dear. Ah! I know! Wanda," she laughed.
"Absolutely not," I laughed, "but I can see your point," I said, as I looked out the window for a minute, "How is Clark taking it?"
'Who is this Clark, guy?'
"Your visit? We got in a screaming match. It all boils down to the fact you are a guy."
"Wow," I replied then shook my head. Clark was one of those super insecure guys who saw everyone as a threat. "So it didn't and doesn't matter that the mere idea of being anything other than an adopted brother makes me want to poke my eyeballs out with a blunt object."
"Nope," she replied. "You're a dude, and dude's only think about getting 'stuff' from girls."
'Ok, so she is safe with Honey. Good to know.'
I gagged and covered my mouth, "Icky. Just the thought of that makes me want to vomit," I said then shuddered.
"Hey," she chuckled. "No pukin' in my truck," she quipped as she smacked my arm.
"Are you allowed to have gay friends?"
"He doesn't like them either. He would be completely happy if I had no friends at all."
"That is what I call possessive."
"That is what I call fucked up," she replied. "Getting a little sick of the double standards. He can have all the friends he wants, but I have lost most of mine, thanks to him."
"Well, you can't lose me. You are stuck with me now."
"Good to know."
"You know I love you, Sissie," I squealed as I laid over onto the console.
"Yeah, I know. Sadly," she replied and then smiled at me before focusing on the road.
After a few miles, I asked, "So he cost you your friends?"
Sighing, she replied, "Yeah. The only ones left are Lynn and Shayne. He tried to get rid of them, but Shayne threw a fit."
"Yeah. Shayne told him to shut up before he knocked him out. I mean, we have been friends for 33 years and nothing has ever happened. EVER. And I like Lynn."
"Shayne's wife. She is awesome!"
"So, do I get to meet the family this week?"
"Nope," she replied. "Ian, Allen, and Jason all have wives that don't like Ma...or me, much. And Los lives in Texas with his wife and their boys, so I don't get to see him much anyways. Costs a ton to board the boys for a visit"
"Los," I asked. I had heard her refer to him, but didn't really know much, other than he was the only biological brother. "I thought he couldn't have kids?"
"Carlos. Most of the family calls him Junior. Juan Carlos Jr. And he can, she can't. The boys are their pitties."
"Wow. What was his mom smoking," I asked.
Bryn smiled, "Don't know, but I wish she would have shared."
"My full name."
"What is it," I asked, mentally preparing myself for the answer.
"Bryn Markham is just the name I write under. Bryanna Ellyen Velvet Colline Brusher nee Loveland, legally. I go by either Annie or Bry, depending on who it is. My parents STILL call me by my full name," She replied, her embarrassment pinking her cheeks slightly.
I grabbed the pad and pen from beside my bed and wrote down the name quickly.
"Oh my god," I laughed.
"Could have been worse, though. If I had been a boy, my dad wanted to name me either Benjamin Abraham or Joshua Earl."
I couldn't help the snort that came out, right before I broke and laughed. I was laughing so hard I was starting to tear up a bit.
"Yeah. Haha. Laugh it up," She said as she rolled the window down a few centimeters and grabbed an ash cup from the rear cup holder. Then, Bryn grabbed the tin of smokes out of the console and lit one up.
"Hold up. You smoke?"
That explains the smell, sometimes.
"Not anymore. Used to, but I found this mix when I quit. I smoked because of my temper, and this mix helps. It's better than looking at the world through two panes of glass and chicken mesh cause I lost it and gave some dumbass what they really deserved."
I looked at her confused.
"A high five...in the face," she said as she glanced at me, "with a chair," Bryn deadpanned as she watched the road.
I snickered a little before I said, "Really?"
"Yeah. More than just a pretty face, little brother," She laughed as she playfully slapped her cheek.
As we settled in to the drive, I realized how much she looked like the girl in Kihyun's dreams. Granted, I could just be seeing what I wanted to see.
They both need someone awesome.
We made it to the house in a little over 3 hours. As usual, Clarkie was pissed. This time cause I actually went and picked up my brother. I guess, he thought if he raised enough of a stink, I would do what he wanted. But, I had a bad habit of never staying in his happy little shell. Mostly because it felt like a cage and I hate to be hemmed in.
He has always said that I need safety and security, but his idea of it is a cage, fences to box me in. My idea was more like a safe place to bed down after a run with the moon, and the freedom to run and stretch out; to sprawl all out and wait for nightfall.
But, Hawkie, has always known its a nice place to land. But that's the way our connection worked, neither one of us had to say much, we just did and it all fit.
I couldn't help but think how wrong this Clark guy was. A spirited filly like that needed plenty of room to run, to roam, or she got stifled. She was right, my idea of security was always just having a good place to land.
As we walked inside, I said, "Look guys, Uncle Jooheon is here."
All three of my kids suddenly insisted on 'Uncle Joey' being his new name; even though I had been coaching them for weeks as to how to pronounce it the right way.
Grimacing, I said, "Sorry, Bud. It appears you have been graced with a new name. In the old ways, a new name is given at the time of adoption. So it looks like it's official. Welcome to the family."
"Hey. I don't mind. There are worse things to be called. Joey works," He chuckled as he shook his head, "At least it's close. I am honored to officially be part of the family."
"Don't get too comfy. Ma picks out middle names at random. So if you ever hear 'Joe' followed by some random Western name, just go with it. And if she whips out the right pronunciation and a random middle name, you are entirely on your own."
"If it's Ma, I would probably answer to it, just to keep her happy," He quipped back.
"It's better that way. She used to call Jamen, the ex, Lynn."
He let loose a belly laugh that had me laughing.
"Seriously," he asked as he wiped his eyes.
"Oh, Yeah. He used to get soo mad."
I laughed at Bryn and Honey and how they acted. Then, I thought about trying that name out in the morning.
As I laid there, curled up and ready to sleep, I felt her. She brushed my hair out of my eyes and whispered softly against my forehead, "You sleep, my love. I'll keep watch."
I fell asleep to her whispering something to me, soft and slow, in a language I couldn't understand. I knew it was no lullaby. It felt more like a blessing, like a prayer. I felt more at peace in that moment than I had for weeks. That night, the nightmares did not haunt me.
The next morning, as we all got around for the day, I took the chance.
All of the guys stopped.
Honey turned to me, "What did you call me."
"Story said she coached her kids for weeks. They all had it right, but, the minute you walked in the door it was 'Joey'."
"Really," He said as he looked kind of confused. "Joey?" He just snickered and smiled. "Babies. What can ya do," he laughed.
"If what she wrote is true, in her culture, when a person is adopted, they are given a new name. 'Joey' happens to be yours. Not to mention that 'Honey' weirds her out."
The expression on his face dropped. Confusion colored his face for a moment, then the look of understanding followed, "Ahh. Smaller and close to the original so the kids can learn it. Also, so the adults understand that with the small nickname, everything is ok, but the full version, pronounced right, means 'Shut up and listen'. Got it."
"Did you miss the adopted part? She knows!"
At almost two in the afternoon here, I heard her whisper, 'I'm off to bed.' as I felt her presence close to me. Next, came the burn on my cheek, followed by her soft, 'Goodnight, Love.'
Since I was finishing up my lunch, I decided to reach for her. 'Rest well, my queen. You have more than earned it today,' I said as I brushed her hair away from her face. She always looks so peaceful when she sleeps. I almost couldn't wait for the day when I could physically hold her again.

Summary: Ernest decides to contact June and get to know her a bit more.
Word Count: 1828
The woman's laughter fluttered all over the room as the couple held some fine champagne and June patted the man's shoulder "Oh, Hamid, dear, you always make my day!"
The man suppressed a laugh as he said "So do you, dear June. How was London?"
The woman giggled as she sipped some of her drink and looked around before whispering to Hamid's ear "I met someone that night,"
Hamid's eyes went wide as a smile spread all over his face.
"My, my, Dante, you never cease to amaze me! Who's the man… or perhaps a woman?"
"This time it was a man. A very dashing gentleman,".
"Now this is the part where you say he's a gentleman in the sheets?"
The woman rolled her eyes, smacking her friend's shoulder before her face went serious "We didn't lay together. He wasn't in a nice place and he seemed a bit tipsy, so I gave him my number and let him go. It's been two whole weeks since then,"
Hamid patted her back "I wouldn't overthink it. A grieving man usually takes his time to gather the time to be worthy of a companion. It's useless to bed someone when your mind is with another woman. Or man. And for what he sounds like, his reputation is at stake now. It's better if for now you just treat him like a friend."
She nodded before placing her head on his chest.
"Do you think our friendship would've been different if I hadn't used you to forget about Annabelle?"
"Maybe. But the bad blood is now aside and we're good."
"I don't think I'll ever apologize enough for the damage I did,"
"You don't have to."
Immersed in her thoughts, she sighed before chugging her champagne flute.
Ernest balanced his possibilities while he held the card in his hands, his leg moving nervously while he was seated on his couch. What if she was busy? What if she already forgot him? What if all she wanted was to be a hot fling? He bit his lip as the fine card prayed: June Dante, singer. Call this number to contact my townhouse in Madrid.
There was one way to find out. He dialed the number as he waited patiently for the operator to announce the call. He waited as he thought of that night just two weeks ago. How she smelled like, a breath of fresh air; her cherry lips sweet and pillowed against his; her delicate hands on his hair, tugging it, begging for more; her smooth skin against his palms; the way her body could fit perfectly on his arms… He shook his head as he heard a voice, a masculine one "Hello?"
"Good afternoon, sir, is this June Dante's townhouse in Madrid?"
"It is, who is it?"
"Mr. Ernest Sinclaire. Miss Dante told me I could contact her,"
A noise of realization sounded over the phone as he called "June, dear, your British friend is on the phone!" There was a bit of amusement on him, he could tell.
He felt a bit foolish. Maybe he had interrupted some exciting meeting with a far more interesting man than him? He called her dear, maybe they were something and he meddled without knowing it? If she was, he would step aside. He could never steal someone else's girl, not after his experience with Roselyn. It was the worst feeling in the world.
"Hello?" Her voice was sweet as honey, caressing slowly his ears as his heart fluttered and his cheeks colored crimson "Ernest, dear, is that you?"
He cleared his throat "Yes, it's me. I hope I haven't interrupted anything important…"
"Of course you didn't, dear! I was looking forward to you calling me!" He could feel her perfect white smile, maybe some lipstick on it, making it tempting and kissable "How have you been, dear?"
"A bit busy, but I managed to snag a moment to… well, talk to a friend." He smiled for a moment after saying those words. He could feel her beautiful smile widen even if he didn't see it.
"I am so glad that you decided to reach me out, dear. Have businesses treated you well, love?" He couldn't tell why, but when she called him love, his cheeks reddened and his heart beat faster.
"T-the usual. Busy, but necessary,"
"Hmm, I can tell. Some contracts for my vinyl can be dreadful, but I am sure you handle them very well, dear friend."
"I try," He felt dizzy and his head was spinning and she wasn't even in front of him. This woman had either bewitched him or he was just ill.
A small giggle escaped her lips "What do you plan to do today, love?"
"Well, go to work as usual and, um, go to the pub with my friends, drink some beer."
"That sounds fantastic, dear! I just wish I were there to keep you company," He somehow felt her pout "I had a great time the other day…" He felt his face hot as he remembered it, but told himself to gather himself.
"I, too, enjoyed your company, my lady."
"Mmm, my lady, so formal… I like the ring to it." She taunted, making him even more flustered.
"I, uh, have to hang up. My friends await me and I want to be punctual. I'll… call you later, Miss Dante,"
"I count on that… sir." Her lips purred that last word and he tried not to make anything weird as he nodded, bidding a last goodbye, his body feeling like he has drunk three whole bottles of champagne.
He hadn't felt this way before. Not even with his previous wife. It was something different. She had left him intrigued. He felt vulnerable, human, alive with her. He did not mind, and that scared him.
The last time he decided to feel any happiness, everything fell apart. He knew by the radio that she'd be very busy with her tour, and phone calls were the least private thing in the world. Without thinking, he sat on the desk and pulled out a piece of paper, and started to write to her.
Esteemed Miss Dante:
I write to you in the hopes to get to know you a bit better, and as we mentioned in our call, have a friendly chat.
Right now, I find myself preparing for a new debate about the suffragettes—I'm on the liberal party—and my good friend, the Earl of Edgewater, is aiding me. I think you'd like him, the earl. He is kind, open-minded, and selfless. Though I find him myself a bit sad: his newborn daughter was stolen from him twenty years ago, and his wife was probably kidnapped. We never knew of her again. He now lives with his new wife and two sons, though I know that there is no day he doesn't think of his daughter, who'd be twenty-one by November.
Whereas, I never had the chance to have any siblings or children myself. I live on my own and as I mentioned before, I work at the Parliament and in my estate, Ledford Park. It is not the biggest estate, but it is mine and it holds so many memories.
My time is running out and I must be away, but I hope I could hear from you again.
A week had passed since he sent the letter to Miss Dante, but he did not know why he couldn't stop thinking about her… or her cherry lips, so kissable and pillowed, or her white-blond hair, so soft and silky against his long fingers, or her small body, so warm and welcoming… his cheeks reddened at the thought and shook it off before looking up to see what the earl had to say.
Minutes later, he was accompanying the earl home to take tea and talk business, as usual, when an errand boy tapped on his shoulder. He whipped his body to look at him before he handed him a letter "From Miss June Dante,".
He nodded thank you to the boy and gave him a coin before he tipped his hat and scurried off, probably with Miss Dante's mail. He wouldn't be surprised if she had many interesting friends in London.
A playful nudge from his old friend woke him from his trance "Miss Dante, eh?"
He cleared his throat "She is an acquaintance of mine,"
"One that makes you blush like a schoolboy. Come on, don't lie to me, Ernest. I saw you be born and helped your parents raise you, I know you as well as they did!"
He tweaked him a smile before shaking his head off "She is just a good acquaintance of mine, and too interesting for a poor country squire like me,"
"I used to say that about my Mary, and then, one day she declared that she loved me, of all of her suitors," His face fell "I should have told her I loved her more oft,"
He placed a comforting hand on his shoulder "It wasn't your fault, my lord."
He chuckled bitterly "Ah, but it is,"
After a productive day, he finally sat in his lavish, modern, and posh office and decided to open the letter:
Dear Mr. Sinclaire:
You cannot tell how happy I was to receive your letter. It was good to get to know you, somehow, and all of your friends seem like a bunch of lovely dears.
And as for me, I have little to say. My mother, a famous singer of her time –she used to sing in the Opera St. James in the 1890s—raised me on her own in a wee flat of Los Angeles, United State of America, and grew up among artists. I do not think you'd love the city, but its history and architecture would be pleasing to you.
I did not marry nor had any children, though I used to be engaged to who is now a good friend of mine.
My best friend, Annabelle Parsons, used to be engaged to a man called Harry Foredale, but she broke it off for reasons that are not mine to tell. But now she is happily unmarried, living her best life in France and being a highly successful painter. You should see her paintings! She is truly talented.
There are a billion things I could say to you, but alas, my flight to Vienna is awaiting me. Alongside this letter you shall find my address to my townhouse and a photo of mine, so you don't forget about your poor friend.
Ms. June Dante.
He placed the letter back to its place, but he caught a whizz of her perfume: sweet strawberry and rosemary. His head started to spin most pleasantly, his heart beating hard as he tried to steady himself.
He gulped the rest of his scotch and started to write.
Dear Miss Dante…
