Sun Ce and his sister Lady Sun (Shangxiang) as Servants
I was wondering if/when the third of the three kingdoms was gonna get brought up in my inbox. I'll be honest though while I know a little about the historical Han and SOME about the historical Cao , I know pretty much jack about the Wu outside of literally just Dynasty Warriors 3, 6 (or was it 7...?), and whatever the hell was going in Strikeforce.
What I'm getting at is this one I'm not really qualified to speak on. But considering afaik it's literally the two main figures of one of the three eponymous kingdoms (again, assuming off DW) I've no doubt they'd qualify. Given what I know Sun Ce's characterization in those games is pretty heavily rooted in historical accounts (though I definitely know his role in most DW games definitely is not) and if so I think that'd honestly make a great 1 to 1 transfer to a servant, very much the FE Claude of the three, if you will. I'd say make him a saber to match Cao Cao and Liu Bei, but I don't know of any actual basis in that so to be safe I guess go with Rider. There's also parallels to Xiang Yu you could throw in, but I don't wanna make him a berserker JUST because of his "Little Conqueror" thing. Could make for nice interactions with Yu and Akuta tho.
Shangxiang I know for a fact would be an archer cause there was actually a controversy over her Dynasty Warriors self related to this. Though I would feel bad bringing her in without Liu Bei. Then again, something that there's definitely a lot to work with is how one of the other things I know about her historical self is she's been subject to revisionist history, especially in regards to her marriage with Liu and her potential death.
Wish I could say I have more ideas like the other three kingdom's stuff I've mentioned but uh... yeah like I said at the start, I have "a very strange patchwork of knowledge" on these things-

2019 Xenos Wishlist
With the final day of 2018 being here I think I’ll remain positive. Today I’m gonna make a vague wishlist of things I hope for Xenos next year, tomorrow I’ll do an overview of how my expectations for 2018 went.
Aelindrach:
Let them just exist! I was so excited when Fracture of Biel-tan seemed to really be bringing Aelindrach into focus, empowering it, building it up...only for all of it to just be completely abanonded throughout 8th Edition, including in the Drukhari Codex itself! I hope in 2019 we see Aelindrach actually have some significance.
A Kheradruakh miniature as powerful as a Primarch.
Anhrathe:
Let this army be redone and made more effective. Normally, as a minor force, I’d not really expect them to even get rules, but the Anhrathe DID have rules, many, so it sucks to see them degraded to basically nothing.
I’d love to see more fiction starring them, even if only short stories, novellas and audio dramas. The Anhrathe could be for Aeldari literature what Inquisition stories are for the Imperium.
Asuryani:
Clarify Biel-tan’s state! Please! I’d also like Biel-tan, considering the beating it’s taken recently, to get a major win against a notable force or character.
Feature the Phoenix Lords more in the Lore; be it Phoenix Lord Novels or simply more mentions in the codices I would just like to read more about them.
LET THE AVATAR OF KHAINE WIN AN IMPORTANT FIGHT.
Plastic Aspect Warriors, please.
Drukhari:
Lady Malys miniature and Lady Malys focused lore and stories, particularly explaining her connection to the Ynnari.
Arhra coming back into the lore! Whether he be Drazhar or not, I just want to see him back.
Haemonculi actually demonstrating they have superior genetic manipulation capabilities to humans.
Asdrubael either dying or getting off his ass and winning even just one major battle.
Exodites:
I would love a story featuring Exodites in which they don’t just die to Space Marines or Daemons but actually are shown as capable of defending themselves.
An army!
Harlequins:
A special character. Sylandri Veilwalker would most likely be best (and make her a stronger Psyker than Voldus who’s way younger than her).
A story of a Solitaire killing like a Shield-Captain or something to make up for the awful ‘died to kill an Eversor’ fluff we got in the Codex.
Death Jester guns actually being worth something without having to take Curtainfall every time. >_>
Give Harlequins actual extreme anti-Daemon and Chaos capabilities, in excess of Grey Knights, since, you know, HARLEQUINS HAVE ACCESS TO THE BLACK LIBRARY ITSELF! Seriously they should have access to more True Names than anyone in the Galaxy.
Ynnari:
Let them actualy exist. By far the biggest dropped plotline of all of 8th Edition. Just let the Ynnari actually do meaningful things.
Show that the alliance with the Imperium is reciprocal, not one-way.
Have a story in which Ynnari kick Captain Artemis’ butt.
Have a story in which the Yncarne is shown to be as strong as a Daemon Primarch.
Necron:
Show the consequences of the Absorption Wars. Imotehk conquered the largest territory of any single being in the last 8000 years, most of it Imperial, yet in none of the works about the Imperium, not Guilliman or anyone, does anyone even MENTION that the Sautekh Dynasty has just carved the largest congruent, centralized empire in the galaxy out of their territory.
Female Phaerakh Special Character.
Expand on the notion of potential alliance between the Necron and Ynnari.
Orks:
CLARFIY THE STATUS OF THE OCTARIUS WAR!
I’d say ‘let them win Armageddon’ but at this stage I honestly think I should give up.
Have Nazdreg win a war against the Dark Angels decisively.
Have Snagrod win a major conflict against the Imperium.
Have Wazdakka defeat the Dread Host sent to kill him.
Let Orkimedes have a miniature.
Give me my Mega Armour Warboss.
T’au Empire:
Have Shadowsun win the Battle of the Startide Nexus without needing assistance.
Introduce a new, female, Ethereal Supreme.
Give Battlesuit pilots BS 3+
Have the T’au complete the conquest of the Dovar System as Shadowsun’s major triumph of the Third Sphere Expansion as, without it, she basically conquered a grand total of 1 planet; Prefectia.
Kroot:
Give them a playable army under the T’au Empire Keyword!
Tyranids:
Let there be a fourth Tyrannic War and LET THE TYRANID WIN FOR ONCE.
Show that the Swarmlord is as strong as a Primarch.
Genestealer Cults:
Let them be the victors of Vigilus, though I know that won’t happen sadly.
Give them lore in which they actually win battles and don’t, in their own codex, just constantly lose every conflict they get into.
Have a story about them slaying a Death Watch strikeforce.

You know, I think it would be great if they make a DW game, but with fantasy elements. Essentially like Strikeforce, but with the historical Three Kingdoms story peppered with mystical elements. Given the rampant magical abilities in the series, it wouldn't be too weird. It will make the story livelier and interesting, and even have some of Orochi or Strikeforce characters as well! (Maybe also with those characters in Dynasty Warriors DS).

Dynasty Warriors 8: A Retrospective (700th Post Special)
Tumblr media
A couple of months ago, in April, I did a retrospective on a guilty pleasure game I played during the lockdown, namely Warriors Orochi Z. After clearing every battle at least once, I found myself moving onto this game and collecting all the 5th and 6th star weapons for each character, and I’ve never bothered with making the effort for things like this before. I usually never stray outside of the Easy difficulty, but I started finding myself playing on Normal and Hard difficulties, which brought out some of the weaknesses in some of the weapons.
Given my feelings about Koei Tecmo in recent years, don’t be surprised if I sound negatively biased about some things in this post. Playing this game stirred up more negative feelings about Koei Tecmo than I did playing Warriors Orochi Z. If Dynasty Warriors 7 was the start of Koei Tecmo’s downward slope to Dynasty Warriors 9, the series’ equivalent of The Room, then Dynasty Warriors 8 is probably the last decent Koei Warriors game to be released, with English dubbing taken into consideration. In fact, given what I’ve said about Koei Tecmo, you could say that about all their 2010s releases. Anyway, I’ll try to stay on topic for this one.
Let’s take a look at the weapon system. Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce introduced the dual weapon system and with it, the ability to use another character’s weapons. DW7 introduced Switch Attacks along with a unique EX Attack for each character. DW8 introduced the Three Point System and with it, Storm Rushes and Switch Counters, while the subsequent Xtreme Legends expansion added a second EX Attack. If you were to compare character and weapon movesets from DW6 to 8, you can see the evolution of the characters’ movesets.
The Three Point System is a paper-scissors-rock system linked to weapon affinities. It’s designed for players to pick two different affinities so that they won’t be at a disadvantage. I’ve noticed that when enemies switch weapons, they always switch to an attribute where you are disadvantaged and if you look carefully, they will be able to switch between all three attributes instead of two. I think that Switch Counters should be allowed to be executed when an officer is about to switch weapons, regardless of affinity, so that you don’t lose your advantage and Storm Rush progress when you’ve got two weapons of the same affinity. Losing the Three Point System would have been an easier way to put it.
While the variety of weapons selectable is plentiful, there are advantages and disadvantages to certain weapons. EX attacks also play a role in this. There are also some tricks to using certain weapons that you can either take the effort to learn or just randomly discover it in game, such as the tricks you can do with the Circle Blade (Ding Feng’s weapon). On a side note, there are too many soldiers with shields, making them harder to hit or land a hit on higher difficulties without getting hit at least ten times.
DW7 introduced a different kind of Musou attack similar to a finisher and each character would have two of them available, the secondary one being triggered either in the air or holding R1. DW8 introduced a third Musou attack to fill the gap. Like everything else, the efficacy of various Musou attacks varies between characters. There are some Musou attacks that target enemies; like I said once, I wish there was a prioritisation system for enemy officers, unit commanders and mobile unit captains because the Musou attack would look better that way.
Story Mode in DW7 was different to previous entries in that there were stories for each kingdom instead of Musou Modes for each character, which are usually picks from a large pool of battle scenarios. DW7 made the experience cinematic as cutscenes blended into the action; this trend continues in DW8, though it sort of goes back to the DW5-style. Where DW7 only focused on a single character per battle, DW8 allows you to choose from up to four characters to play with. The only problem I have with this is that with the amount of times certain characters are featured in each story, certain characters might not be featured enough for you to grind up their levels, but Ambition Mode sort of alleviates that. And who can forget the hypothetical storylines of each story? Having this feature in the game was refreshing for me.
This will probably go over a lot of people’s heads if they haven’t actually played the game, instead preferring to watch Let’s Plays on YouTube, but Free Mode also allows you to play certain battles from the enemy’s point of view. For example, the Battle of Changban is in Shu’s story but not in Wei’s story, but you can sort of play it in Free Mode if you have Xtreme Legends. The Free Mode stages also have objectives for you to complete, so it’s not as boring.
I’ve already cleared Ambition Mode long ago, so all I ever do in this mode is send officers out in battle and regain defeated ones through playing Great Battles. I have tried to grind character bonds to unlock their lines in the Gallery, but I’ve got better things to do.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a traditional Yeonchi Koei Tecmo rant if it didn’t have a long spiel on English dubbing and localisation. The scars still remain from years ago; narration and camp voices have been removed from this game (they were included in DW7), Zhang Liao’s voice actor was changed in Xtreme Legends and all his lines from the vanilla game were rerecorded and some of the text translation is just atrocious, if not in the grammar then in the logic. I’ve held the theory that when corners are cut in voice acting, the subtitles suffer with it and it has been proven true with this game. In other non-Koei Tecmo games, you could chalk down the horrendous subtitles in sub-only games to it being a dubtitle. The only “secret” camp voices in this game are in the Battle of Fan Castle’s Shu scenario, where the two soldiers are talking about Lu Su. It almost feels spiteful that they left that line in if they weren’t going to dub the camp voices in the first place.
I won’t bother going into Empires because after playing it for some time, it’s essentially just button mashing between battles and strategy. Two good things about it is you can make your own officers and choose which officers to send out into battle. That’s about it.
I’m not going to compare this to Dynasty Warriors 9, but I want to mention something I failed to mention in previous rants about this game. Either this flew over my head or you sheeple didn’t think about sending this to me, but whatever. Apparently, Kaiji Tang (Sima Zhao’s VA) was contacted to reprise his role for DW9, but the other side went dark and by the time he knew, the role was already recast, even though he was available at the time. Some people have speculated that Koei Tecmo switched from Voicegroup to Voxx Studios not because of the voice actor strike, but because they were being cheap as usual. Given their reputation, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case, but as always, I’m obsessed with wanting to hear the truth from them, which is why I’ve kept up my rants for so long in the hope that I would hear something official. Turns out that the subject is something that remains under fan speculation.
This game and all the other Koei Warriors games I still have serve as bittersweet reminders of how they used to be, whether it be the localisation or mechanics. I remember getting a bit of flack from people when I started the Koei Warriors Rant Series over me telling Koei Tecmo and sub fans to commit seppuku for accepting “imperfect” games. I recanted that viewpoint over the years, but honestly, after learning about DW9, I would have had no qualms standing by it had I not decided to leave the Koei Tecmo fanbase and be indifferent about all of this. Alternatively, I would prefer to use the phrase “get woke, go broke”; if Western media’s idea of being woke is to forgo continuity and character development to pander to a certain audience, then Japanese game companies’ idea of being woke would probably be to localise their games with cheap or no English dubbing. Oh well, everything I love is falling apart around me and it feels like all I can do is enjoy the rubble.
