the worst person you’ll ever meet: a georgina sparks playlist (x)

Dedicated to those of you who’ve in any way caused or encouraged non-ironic Georgina feelings, because I refuse to deal with this alone. Text version of the tracklist and commentary under the cut:

1. “Bang Bang Bang Bang,” Sohodolls. So ‘Bang’ isn’t actually being used in this song as a euphemism for sex, but as onomatopoeia for a gunshot but… i think it works either way, especially with the portrait of the fucked up family painted at the beginning and then just totally jumping away from that for the rest

2. “Mayhem,” Halestorm. A little mayhem never hurt anyone/When I'm gonna get some?/A little bedlam 'til I'm coming undone/Where I'm gonna get some?

3. “Crash And Burn Girl,” Robyn. You should have a sticker on you saying, "Warning Keep Out"/You're the kind of girl that'll mess you up for life

4. “Rich Kids Blues,” Lykke Li. And we hit the actual feelings again! Like, it has to come from somewhere, you know? And there’s such a nihilistic edge to her… I don’t think Georgina’s happy. I really don’t think that

5. “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” Cyndi Lauper. I mean the thing is that she does, you know? She has this absolute violence in the way she does it but she’s really just here to like. Enjoy herself. Hang out with who she likes. What are consequences?

6. “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),” Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.

7. “Take It Off,” Kesha. There's a place I know if you're lookin' for a show/Where they go hardcore and there's glitter on the floor/And they turn me on when they take it off

8. “Just Dance,” Lady Gaga. The party girl is unavoidable! And kind of fucked up. What's goin' on, on the floor?/I love this record, baby, but I can't see straight anymore/Keep it cool, what's the name of this club?/I can't remember, but it's alright, a-alright

9. “If You Seek Amy,” Britney Spears. I love this as a pre-series seregina song—that sense that our singer isn’t who everyone is looking for, just the way to get to her… yeah

10. “Every Breath You Take,” The Police. Did I just say pre-series seregina? Yeah, we’re getting into it. Oh, can't you see you belong to me?/How my poor heart aches with every step you take

11. “High Enough,” K.Flay. I used to like liquor to get me inspired/But you look so beautiful, my new supplier. I was thinking a lot about substance abuse and its place in Georgina’s narrative and, like, the way that (like with every other character) it’s never taken seriously that she’s struggling with it, and about that sense of obsession and loss of control, and this song plays it very straight but… there’s something there

12. “Jenny (I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship),” Studio Killers. Do I think Georgina even let herself know this much about her feelings? No. Is this song still here? Yes

13. “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” Dua Lipa.

14. “Michelle,” Sir Chloe. And we pause, to switch povs to the outside for a moment. You know just how to be cruel/When you shake your hips that way/I don't care what you say/Michelle, Michelle/You are a monster from Hell

15. “How to Be a Heartbreaker,” MARINA. Wear your heart on your cheek/But never on your sleeve/Unless you want to taste defeat

16. “Choke,” I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME. If I could burn this town/I wouldn't hesitate/To smile while you suffocate and die

17. “killer queen,” Mad Tsai. Gunpowder, gelatine/Dynamite with a laser—no, not that one. She's a motherfucking killer queen/A psychopath at seventeen/A beauty in a blood-stained dress

18. “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid,” The Offspring. With a thousand lies and a good disguise/Hit 'em right between the eyes, hit 'em right between the eyes. I mean, who on gg is more of a fan of lies and impersonations? (And if I have my reboot canon right… she did take it pretty far)

19. “good 4 u,” Olivia Rodrigo. You look happy and healthy, not me/If you ever cared to ask/Good for you/You're doin' great out there without me, baby. Post-s1 seregina, mostly. But a little dangina to it too

20. “Let’s Be Friends,” Emily Osment. Everyone knows I'm getting my way/It doesn't matter what you say

21. “Bad Romance,” Lady Gaga. You know that I want you/And you know that I need you/I want it bad, your bad romance/I want your love, and I want your revenge. Dangina!!!!

22. “Tongues & Teeth,” The Crane Wives. Oh, I will ruin you/It's a habit—I can't help it/I know that you mean so well/But I am not a vessel for your good intent

23. “Bust Your Kneecaps,” Pomplamoose. Georgina is a terrible and obsessive ex. Also the connections to organized crime, if you’re reading it the other way

24. “Bury Me Facedown,” grandson. I really am surprised I can’t remember a Blair one liner about how Georgina is like a bad penny

25. “Runs In The Family,” Amanda Palmer. I say it runs in the family/This family that carries me to such great lengths/To open my legs up to anyone who'll have me/It runs in the family, I come by it honestly

26. “Plump,” Hole. There are so many things we don’t really know about why Georgina kept Milo, or about how her parents influenced her taking her, or about what she was like as a parent, or about how she felt about becoming a parent and… yeah

27. “Hot Mess,” Cobra Starship. If you're dancing up on tables/You go, you go, you got it, girl/Say that you're unstable/You go coco, you got it, girl

28. “Versions of Violence,” Alanis Morissette. Okay look this is significantly just a list of signs of emotional abuse and like. What is more Georgina than headfuckery (and herself being equally screwed up)

29. “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got,” Fergie, Q-Tip, GoonRock. A little party never killed nobody/So we gon' dance until we drop/A little party never killed nobody/Right here, right now's all we got

30. “Sin Wagon,” The Chicks. This was the first or second song on here—I was thinking of just throwing a mainstream worship song in here and then cutting back to party and mayhem, just for the dissonance, and then I remembered this and the ‘Jesus and I have redefined our relationship’ vibes were,,, perfect. Of course, the fiddles it starts with were dissonance enough on their own, and the overall work comes back to that same ‘I’m gonna burn it all down because fuck it, I deserve it’ so… here it is. Our conclusion

Slash: The Early Sessions 1983 Punk Rock / Rockabilly / Americana / Alternative Rock / New Wave

Slash Records opened its doors in 1978 as a label that was committed to documenting Los Angeles' then-exploding punk rock scene. And very early on, they managed to secure two of the city's biggest, most influential, and most critically acclaimed acts: Germs and X. Plus, they also put out the soundtrack to the famed LA punk documentary, The Decline of Western Civilization. So, needless to say, they were extremely integral to the whole cultural movement.

But it didn't take very long for Slash to begin to expand past their pure punk product. In '81 they added the rootsy rockabilly Blasters to their ranks, followed by punks-turned-country-rockers Rank and File—whose leading members, brothers Chip and Tony Kinman, had previously fronted legendary Cali punk band The Dils—and then in '83 came Chicano rockers Los Lobos and Milwaukee folk-punks Violent Femmes. And they also had neo-psych/paisley underground staple The Dream Syndicate and blues-rock punks The Gun Club on their subsidiary, Ruby Records, too.

So, this 1983 greatest hits sampler from Slash catches the label somewhere in the midst of that expansion, trying to coherently bridge a gap between Americana and punk rock, showing that these two styles that can seem *very* disparate can actually be woven together quite effectively.

But I'm not sure that they actually pulled it off here, as there seems to be something of a theme to each side of the record: the A-side consists of the Americana stuff and the B-side has mostly the punk stuff, and despite some of these bands' affinity for mixing the two things together, you don't really get much of a taste of it here.

And it also appears that the A-side, outside of what is by far the album's most well-known track, the alternative cult classic, "Blister in the Sun" by The Violent Femmes, hasn't stood the test of time, whereas the B-side, with two cuts from X, one from Germs, and another from The Dream Syndicate, still goes pretty damn hard to this day, 40 years later.

X's two offerings, which come off of their pair of hallowed back-to-back albums, 1980's Los Angeles and 1981's Wild Gift, feature the dynamite boy-girl vocal team-up of John Doe and Exene Cervenka that sees them both exchanging lines and also generating great harmonies. And both songs are produced by ex-Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek too.

The Germs song, "Caught in My Eye," is an outtake from the recording sessions for their lone, mythic album, (GI). It features some excellent punk guitar-tone to go along with frontman Darby Crash's scratchy vocal. It's also on a posthumous 1981 Germs compilation EP called What We Do Is Secret and is produced by none other than the queen of punk rock herself, Joan Jett.

And that B-side's only non-punk track, "Tell Me When It's Over" by The Dream Syndicate, is great too. It's the opening track on their landmark debut album, The Days of Wine and Roses, and it's just this thing of jangle-thick, early 80s underground, post-punk beauty.

Took some time for me to really get into this record, but the B-side here is absolutely tremendous. A solid, brief look at some of the early years of this unique LA punk/indie/alt/Americana label.
