Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022)

Format: Feature-length movie that melds live-action and animation.

Director: Akiva Schaffer

Writers: Dan Gregor and Doug Mand

Is J.K. Simmons in this? Yup.

Who does he portray? Captain S. Putty, LAPD, a cop and sentient human-shaped glob of putty.

What does he do? He attempts to solve a string of missing persons cases.

How bald is he? Somewhat, I think he has a comb-over? This raises the question of how baldness applies to an entity that arguably never had hair in the first place, though.

Is anybody else in this? Oh, yes. Various other people, some of them real and some of them animated, are in this.

Is it worth seeing if I’m not a J.K. Simmons completist? Not really. It’s pretty clearly trying to be a spiritual sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which is a very laudable goal. The problem is that what made that movie great was its willingness to generally avoid pop culture references. Most of the commentary in Roger Rabbit is on the tropes of animation, which is what makes it timeless. With the exception of the Uncanny Valley stuff, the commentary in this is pretty much all pop culture references, which basically ensures that the movie will age like milk.

Also, a lot of the references are to Disney-owned properties, which is the cinematic equivalent of laughing at your own joke.

The 2022 American action-adventure comedy film Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a continuation of the animated TV series of the same name and is based on the characters Chip and Dale. it is written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand and directed by Akiva Schaffer

What makes this film innovative is the sheer number of animation styles crammed into a single story.The combination of 2D, 3D and live action is something that has not been done in recent years, but Rescue Rangers is the first mainstream feature to do so. Additionally, it features sock puppets, claymation, motion capture characters, live action actors, and more.In this world, almost anything is conceivable and manages to work.

The film looks like a different world, it has hyper real characters going around and interacting with 2D cartoon characters and then human beings are also interacting with these 2D and 3D characters. It feels almot surreal how well all of them are put im the same enviroment and noone seems to be mis fit in the environment whether its a 2D character or a human being. It would be fair to say that the film makers have done a great job blending these characters into the enviroment.

The fact that Chip is drawn in 2D animation and Dale is in 3D CGI animation because he had to get “CGI plastic surgery” to improve his looks is so clever that I’m surprised no one’s made this joke before, its quite hilarious and it highlights the rising trend of aesthetic procedures in todays world. Aside from the humour, this movie did a superb job of handling the abundance of legendary IP. Which makes it quite nostalgic for viewers and interesting at the same point. I'm so excited to see a lot of my favorite nostalgic shows from other studios crossover into this movie. We come across Disney characters, also get to see Nickelodeon references, Sony Animation, Hasbro, DreamWorks, and others. It is a fun and creative film, quite diferent than the contemporary animated feature films.

How can I relate it to my practice

In this film, almost anything is conceivable and manages to work together such as sock puppets, claymation, motion capture characters, live action actors, and more. I think I can also think about trying different medium in a single animation. Maybe I can do claymation or stop motion with 2D animation. After this project, I would like to try different techniques of creating animations that I have come across in this year. I would also like to learn 3D animation as I have some interest in 3D animation. Maybe after learning some basics I can try doing some basic blend of 2D and 3D animations.

Dolittle (2020)

When it comes to Dr. Dolittle, I’ve done my movie homework. I’ve seen all 7 films, from the dull 1967 musical to the direct-to-DVD sequels to the Eddie Murphy comedy. I’ve concluded that it’s impossible to make a good “Dr. Dolittle” movie. This 2020 revival obviously spent tons of money on effects and it amounts to nothing. Even little kids will leave unsatisfied thanks to its jumbled story.

Dr. John Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.) is a veterinarian who can speak to and understand animals. When Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley) falls deathly ill, only he can find the cure for the poison she’s been given by Lord Thomas Badly (Jim Broadbent). After reluctantly accepting to take young Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett) as an apprentice, Dolittle and his animal friends set sail to find the “Fruit of Eden”.

The picture believes that as long as someone is talking, the audience will be laughing so it bombards you with a dozen unnecessary "funny" characters. Emma Thompson voices Polynesia, Dolittle’s macaw friend. She’s the sensible bridge between worlds so you could keep her. Rami Malek as the anxious gorilla, John Cena as a perpetually chilly polar bear, Kumail Nanjiani as an ostrich, Octavia Spencer as a one-legged duck, Tom Holland as a dog with glasses, Selena Gomez as a giraffe, and Marion Cotillard as a fox could’ve all been combined into just a few animals or omitted entirely. The worst of the bunch are Jason Mantzoukas as a dimwitted, wisecracking dragonfly and Craig Robinson as a paranoid squirrel. The jokes in this movie all sink to the bottom of the ocean but those two take it to another depth of anti-funniness.

The dialogue is terrible and the physical gags are made to match. Little kids won't know better and will probably laugh but adults will be embarrassed to watch Robert Downey Jr. in a bad wig wildly gesticulating. You think you’ve gotten acclimated to how terrible this is? Just wait until the movie pulls out a reference to “The Godfather” or brings on the bowel and testicle jokes. I’d tell you about the picture's worst scene but you wouldn’t believe me.

Not helping is the needlessly complicated, Swiss cheese-like plot. On the day Queen Victoria sends Lady Rose (Carmel Laniado) to find Dolittle (why'd she send a little girl on such an important mission?), Tommy finds a way into his wildlife sanctuary. Once they embark on the adventure, Rose is left behind and doesn’t do anything for the rest of the film. Why was she included at all?

Dolittle can’t get its narration right and can’t even manage to correctly do a mid-credit gag. Not only is it spoiled by the end credits (which didn’t even look all that good if you ask me) but it follows-up on a character that no one was wondering about. They had the money, they had the star power and it all went to waste. (Theatrical version on the big screen, January 30, 2020)

Most Likely to Murder (2018)

The once king of high school comes back to his hometown for Thanksgiving only to realize his old shenanigans aren’t as cool anymore. Will he reign king again when revealing the school outcast murdered his mother or will it only be seen as a sloppy attempt to get back together with his ex-girlfriend?

I didn’t have too high hopes for this movie; it went straight to iTunes and didn’t get really any promotion, but I’m a big Adam Pally fan so when the Most Likely to Murder dropped on Hulu, I thought I’d give it a chance and holy shit I’m so happy I did! This movie comes with some amazing characters, laugh out loud moments, and a solid plot that always kept you guessing.

Billy (Adam Pally) was a great character that made me feel a whole range of emotions throughout the movie. There were points where I was laughing at this dude that peaked in high school who’s still trying to be the shit but also moments that you can identify with his douche bag facade he puts on while his life is hitting rock bottom. You want him to loose so bad because he can remind you of the terrible people you went to high school with, but you also know he just needs this one win to help turn his life around. This was a really fine line that was being walked on throughout the movie, I give a lot of credit to the writers (Dan Gregor & Doug Mand), director (Dan Gregor), and Pally himself for making Billy so terrible but so likable.

The surrounding characters helped color the world around us and seeing who cast is made up of, it’s no surprise how hilarious Most Likely to Murder came out. Rachel Bloom, Billy Eichner, Hasan Minhaj, and John Reynolds to name a few are some of the actors that really stand out, but my personal favorite was Doug Mand, who plays the character Duane, Billy’s high school best friend, and was also a writer on the movie. The way he still worshiped Billy and the fact that he posts drumming tutorial videos on YouTube (which has a large fan base in the Philippines) always made me laugh.

Another quick note, and something I don’t think I comment a lot on, is how fun the music was! The fun, upbeat and bouncy tunes was a real reflection of the plot. Sometimes it sounded a bit cartoonish and that’s exactly what this movie as a whole reminded me of. From the quirky characters to the absurdity of the story at times, I just thought the music was spot on and wanted to give it a little bit of love.

I know I’ve harped on the humor in this movie too much so let me also add that there are some pretty touching moments along with a heart racing scene towards the end. If you’re looking for a fun movie to enjoy by yourself or with a group of friends, I think Most Likely to Murder is totally one to keep in mind!

I give Most Likely to Murder a seven out of ten!
