Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 38 - What If
This week’s stories are all around “what if” theme as suggested by @areptiledysfunction1107. Even though technically all fanfictions can be classified as that, these take an extra step making that part of their plot. Also, don't forget about @usamamoweek2023!

I could not have had a “What If” list without this story. Usagi canonically always wants Mamoru (and everyone else around her) to have a chance at making their own choices and not be bound by destiny. One day she bring it up with Setsuna, who makes her learn her lesson the hard way that the timeline should not be messed with.
Fantasy - Lois Fogg
This one was recommended to me by Beej88 and is a fun AU that has magic, parallel worlds and constant questioning of what would happen with every decision. One thing to note, this story was almost sold to a publisher with changed names, so you may notice a few stray “May”s for “Minako” here and that's the reason why. Totally worth checking out though!
Space Bar - Beej88, @smokingbomber
In this short story, mostly told from Joey (Jadeite)’s perspective, readers get to see the dynamics get tested for Shittenou to come back into the fold of the guard. I love the fact that we get Kunzoi and Kunzite x Venus possibilities all in one story.

The Chances We Don't Take - @floraone
The entire one-shot is Mamoru thinking about things he should have done differently when it came to his and Usagi's relationship and past interactions. All the points where if had said something or done something, where it could have led.

Little Mamoru had basically given up. He knows that he is all alone and that there is no one waiting for him to get better and out of the hospital. Except that one special nurse explains that every person has a light inside of them, and that letting it shine brightly will help him find a new family and someone very special, whose light will make his shine even brighter.

Hello again! What about Sora x GN reader who is a Nobody and also the child of Xemnas? The reader spies on Sora everywhere in the worlds and he finally meets them in the Castle That Never Was.
Number one, absolutely! Number two, I love getting requests from you.🥰
Sorry for taking so long.
With age complications, Xemnas/Terra couldn’t possibly have a kid around Sora’s age, this is an adoptive situation. Let’s just get that out the way.
Takes place in Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D. I could write a second part for Kingdom Hearts 3, if requested.
Warnings: KH spoilers, major character death, some typos
Also, R’s attribute is known as Force, their title is The Destiny’s Force, they have gauntlets called Forceful Grasp, and the Nobody’s they command are called Inquisitors. Just putting that there.

Sora x Nobody!Xemnas Child!reader
The Organization had a secret 15th rank. No one talked about them to the point where only a small handful knew about them. Xemnas, Saïx, and Xigbar were the only few that knew of them. Since Sora finally woke up from his year long sleep, they were sent to keep an eye on him. Basically, keeping him on track with The Organization’s plan.
In Halloween Town, before The Battle of A Thousand Heartless, Sora and his friends were heading to Christmas Town. As they made it to the Hitherlands, multiple new Nobodies pop up, blocking their way to the door. (I don’t wanna explain what I want these Nobodies to look like, so you’re getting a picture.)
Before a fight broke out, Sora sees a hooded figure hide behind the Christmas Tree. The group fights off the Inquisitor Nobodies and Sora heads off behind the tree, but the figure disappeared mid-fight. “I swear they were here.” He says to himself before they continued their journey to Christmas Town.

Long afterwards, Sora and the entire gang made it to The Castle That Never Was. As they walked into another room, they were surrounded by the same Nobodies from The Hitherlands. Only this time, the cloaked figure from before was clearly visible. “Hey, Roxas.” Their voice was almost taunting.
“My name is So-!” He was cut off after seeing the figure pull down their hood. It was a kid, around his age. They had (hairl length) silver hair and orange eyes. They looked an awful lot like Xemnas. “I’m number 15. Don’t know why I am. We don’t have a 14.” They explain. “The name’s (Your Organization Name).” They give a half hearted bow.
Sora was confused by the whole interaction. (O/N) stood up, gauntlets appearing on their arms. “Let’s make this fun.” They say before the group got thrown into a fight.

(O/N) slumps to the ground. All of the Inquisitors had been defeated. Sora points his keyblade at them, as if in contemplation. He lowers his keyblade, extending his other hand to them. “I don’t wanna have to kill you.” Sora says, watching as (O/N) took a hold of his hand. He helps them up, only for them to make a sound of pain.
He looks down, seeing his keyblade run right through them. He didn’t understand how that could’ve happened, but (O/N) smirked. “Have fun with my father, Roxas.” They disappear, leaving Sora more confused.

Not too long after Xemnas and Organization XII was defeated, (O/N)’s somebody woke up in the lab with the apprentices. They rub their head, feeling a headache. Unlike the apprentices, (Y/N) was on the observation chair. They feel a slight pain in their stomach. Lifting up their shirt, there was a keyhole shaped scar on their stomach where Sora stabbed them.
Lea walks over, placing a hand on their back. (Y/N)’s shirt drops to cover themself back up. “How did this even happen?” They gesture to everyone laying unconscious on the ground. Lea shrugs. “Sora was just too strong for us to take on.” Lea explains.
(Y/N) gets up from the observation chair, rushing out of the room. Lea tries to follow, but they were too quick for him and disappeared in a dark alleyway.

A while afterwards, (Y/N) was cornered by Xemnas, who was holding No Name. They back up a bit. “It can’t be, you’re gone!” He quickly appeared directly in front of them, grabbing them by the arm. “Ungrateful child of mine.” Was the last thing they heard before being stabbed in the heart by his keyblade.

In The Country of the Musketeers, Sora was looking for the trunk holding Princess Minnie. He turns a corner, seeing a cloaked figure with the trunk. The figure opens up a portal before throwing the trunk through. The portal closes as Sora rushes towards them, pulling out his keyblade.
Gold and silver gauntlets appear on the figures hands. They catch the keyblade in one hand before it hits them. The shockwave of the collision knocked off their hood, showing the face of someone he thought was long gone. “(O/N)?” He was shocked to say the least.
(O/N) pushes him back, the keyblade falls from his grip, vanishing. (O/N) pulls up their hood before summoning a dark corridor, walking through it. The corridor closes before Sora could follow. “(O/N)? Why?” He whispers, knowing they couldn’t hear him.

So what the Hell does Disney’s Hocus Pocus have to do with The Sandman?
Some people have questioned why I have shared Hocus Pocus content to my “Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman” Facebook group. It’s not just because it is Halloween related and Halloween aesthetics turn up a lot in The Sandman.
It very much all has to do with the Hecate.
In Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman we have the Three-in-One, the Triple Goddess. Hecataea (goddess(es) of witchcraft and magick, who also doubles as The Fates, and The Furies AKA The Kindly Ones.
Back in 1969 DC Comics introduced “The Three Witches” as the hosts of one of their horror anthology comics. Cain, Abel, Lucien, Eve (The Raven Woman), The Mad Mod Witch (Fashion Thing), Destiny, and The Hecateae all started as hosts for the old horror anthology comics. Cain hosted The House of Mystery. Abel hosted The House of Secrets. Lucien hosted Tales of Ghost Castle and the three Witches (Hecataea) hosted The Witching Hour.
Here the Maiden, Mother, and Crone used the “Modern” names of Cynthia, Mildred, and Mordred. To reaffirm that these are their new names, they tell these names to Morpheus in issue 2 of The Sandman. Cynthia’s look was likely loosely inspired by Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Three witches, or “Weird sisters” was a image popular in literature and folklore soldified thanks to the cultural influences of the likes of William Shakespeare with his own Weird Sisters.
The maiden, Mother, and Crone turn up a lot in pop culture, often unnoticed.
ere are the Wyrd Sisters from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
Granny Weatherwax (Crone), Nanny Ogg (Mother), Magrat Garlick (Maiden).
Disney’s Gargoyles The Weird Sisters are Luna, Phoebe, and Selene (a moon theme which is common with the three in one. Waxing, full, and waning.)
Though the age distinction isn’t there it’s still a representation of the Three-in-One. They are never separate and they function as one. They also tend to appear the way they want to be seen or the way people expect them to be. For example, when Demona was looking at them, they were a set of elderly female gargoyles but that is not how MacBeth saw them.
Sabrina and her aunts. This one might be a bit of a stretch but you have three witches who are rarely apart so you have the trifecta and Sabrina, herself, is clearly the maiden. Though the Netflix Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ironically uses the aunts to pay homage to DC”s Cain and Abel I’ll use the sitcom version here.
In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina The Weird Sisters are literally Prudence, Agatha and Dorcas.
The Addams Family features it, but it might be pure accident. You have Wednesday (Maiden), Morticia (Mother), and Grandmama (Crone).
Now we have the Hex Girls from Scooby Doo. I Love this little “Eco Goth” band. Not quite the conventional Maiden / Mother/ Crone however you could argue that Thorn is the Crone in this instance, Dusk is the maiden, and Luna is the mother. I pick these roles for purely superficial reasons here since Dusk has the child-like pigtails and Thorn is clearly the most dominant / leader and I perceive her as the oldest.
There are the sisters of Charmed. Not quote Maiden / Mother / Crone but definitely meant as a trio of witches who aren’t complete without the others.
Adelaide (Crone), Auntie Whispers (Mother), and Lorna (Maiden) from Over the Garden Wall. This one is hard to spot until you realize the connection between Adelaide, Auntie Whispers, and Lorna. Once you make the connection and realize the family bond and magick which binds the three you start to see the Maiden / Mother / and Crone aspects in their depictions. Adelaide being the older sister, Auntie Whispers who is the mother figure for Lorne, who is the innocent maiden possessed by an evil spirit.
Another trio is The Witches of Eastwick though not quite Maiden, Mother, and Crone, it felt worth a mention.
Marvel attempted it’s own version of “The Witches” with Jennifer Kale, Satana and Topaz.
Though speaking of the Virgin Mary one could argue that it was actually a a subversive triple Goddess mention at the end of Goethe’s Faust Part 2. When Faust ascends to Heaven we get this line: (Translation from A. S. Kline)
“Virgin, Mother now, and Queen, Goddess, grant your mercies!“
and
“Here, grows to reality: The indescribable, Here, is done: Woman, eternal, 12110 Beckons us on.“

And now to Hocus Pocus.
In Disney’s Hocus Pocus you have The Sanderson Sisters. A bungling group of witches who feel like they came crawling out of a horror anthology comic book with their antics and dark humor. Sarah is the Maiden, Mary is the Mother, and Winifred, The leader, is obviously the Crone. (Note: Queen is a more polite alternate name for the crone aspect of the traditional three-in-one).
With Hocus Pocus, though I cannot prove it, I strongly suspect The Sanderson Sisters weren’t just inspired by the traditional Maiden, Mother, and Crone, but rather specifically the version from DC’s The Witching Hour comics, which in turn were used as the Hecataea in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

Lilo has Darkness & is also a Literal Child (Alice, at least, has the Victoriana & Role Archetype things rendering her age irrelevant; Kairi was a tween).
Giselle from Enchanted: requires consent of IRL persons to use the likenesses thereof, her Worlds are not very interesting gameplay-wise, she does not resonate with the themes of the KH series at this point of its story.
Leia from Star Wars: IRL likenesses, has Darkness, Star Wars is its own form of multiverse (like the crossover series excluded above), sequel trilogy messed up its own Heroine's Journey by switching heroes & would lead KH audiences astray.
anyone from Marvel except (maybe) Kamala Khan.
Remaining 4?
Merida from Brave seems a toss-up: on the one hand, she fulfils many of these themes to varying degrees (freedom, wisp lights, magical transformation, true love); on the other, Merida rejects many of these same themes. I'm also skeptical on how well her setting would act as a playable World in KH (assuming that the New Lights will feature alongside said worlds: this is a flawed rationale). Merida's narrative arc does not easily align with where Sora or Riku are "at" in their journeys: if we meet her & her world, it won't be as "Sora" or "Riku" but as "Donald&Goofy" or the "Wayfinders&Kairi".
Riley, Inside Out? Cons: non-magical setting; game world of her Mind (playing with un/reality) is too useful for the development of Donald, Goofy & Kairi (wrt Sora) & the concept might evengo Christopher Robin (Sora taking Riley's role) though the latter seems unlikely; meeting Riley after playing around in her head would be Awkward.
Ventus? only as a Substitute due to his purity being artificially inflicted on him.
Naminé? only as someone for Kairi to "pass the torch" to, not possible within the KH3 timeline.
[daughter of Simba & Nala]? Nala was pregnant with her in KH & her story is about reuniting [light & darkness] (romeo & juliet, but lions). cons: timeline??? animal heroine.
[any number of Final Fantasy characters that have not yet featured in the KH series]
Pocahontas-the-character thematically fits almost perfectly... but her film's story is one of the cruelest decisions made by Disney as a company, one that continues to cause harm when allowed to stand uncontested.
the boy scout from Up?
Bruno or Alberto, if Disney/the film's creators are willing to make their film's Subtext into "Text".
i have not seen Encanto nor Coco nor Seeing Red: any of these films may harbour an additional Light for Nomura to borrow... but i doubt that he set up the concept of "New Lights" in KH3 without already having most (if not ALL) of its roster already accounted for.
(Disney DOES let Nomura know about upcoming films but, after Frozen's success changed how it was "allowed" to be used in KH3... i find it more likely that the new roster [of Kairi, Rapunzel, Anna, Tiana & Moana] will find its final 2 additions from Pixar &/or Final Fantasy instead).
i highly suspect that at least 1 of the new 7 lights will be male or non-specifically gendered (Wall-E, for exanple).

In this terrific year’s (2021) Halloween, Destiny 2 featured this strange emote, named “Gourd summoner” in English. We can get this in the bright dust page of Eververse.
I was curious about the reference, as I first thought the “dance” was in a music video I already saw, but it was not the case. I finally found the reference in a comment : “ Is this emote a David S. (Side note: this story has actually inspired me to take a photography class with how amazing the technical side of it was written out! Usagi meets a handsome stranger on a train back home after visiting Makoto to help her set up her new bakery in Osaka. Making a snap decision, she decides that she needs to try and see him again and with Ami’s help finds where he is giving his lecture. This kicks off a tale about train stations, brief visits, and miscommunication that may lead to heartbreak unless Mamoru figures out how to open up.
A (Blind) Date with Destiny! - @daikon1
Minako (a friend Usagi met in university) sets her up on a blind date with Mamoru, without realizing that the two knew each other years ago. Both decide that this is the perfect opportunity to try and make new first impressions on the one person they still can't stop thinking about years later, as they proceed to pretend that they do not actually know each other. It is one of my favourite stories to re-read when I need something light-hearted with a happy ending.

These stories are parts 1 and 2 of a Political AU with Usagi running for office on an anti-corruption platform and Mamoru meeting her at the hospital he works at with Ami, and getting pulled into her orbit. We get to watch as our favourite duo figures out a precarious balance of being together in spite of their circumstances.
Next week I am going to cover a few of the currently in progress multi-chapters that have been updated in the last 12 months that I keep hoping to see new entries posted up for, which is technically part 2 to my Unfinished Stories post from September.
