Christmas Cheer
Tumblr media
A/N: Happy first day of December and Densi-mber!
This story takes place in the last couple years. For today’s prompt: Densi buying a Christmas tree.
***
“How about this one?” Deeks asked, reaching in between the fragrant branches of a large spruce tree and grasping the trunk.
“I liked the last one better,” Kensi commented, craning her neck to see the very top of Deeks’ pick.
“But the top branch was crooked.”
“I know. I like things with imperfections.” Kensi slanted a mischievous glance his way and turned to look at another tree that was less massive and almost perfectly straight.
“You should get the big tree,” a soft voice said from behind them. Kensi glanced around until she saw a little boy with dark brown skin peering at them from between two trees.
“You think so?” Deeks asked, turning to face him. The little boy nodded, eyes wide.
“It’s the best one here,” he said, lowering his voice as though someone else might hear and decide to snatch the tree up. Deeks grinned and sank into a crouch.
“I agree, but my wife likes Charlie Brown trees.” He bobbed his head to the side in Kensi’s direction.
“Hey, I saw that movie!” The boy said excitedly, squeezing between the trees. “Do you know Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer?”
“I do.” Deeks stood again with a groan, brushing off his knees as the little boy came to stand between them. “My name’s Marty, by the way,” he added. “This is Kensi.”
“Hi! My name is Bobby. I’m five years old.” He proudly showed them five fingers.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Deeks offered him his hand to shake, which seemed to delight Bobby even more. His hand looked ridiculously small engulfed in Deeks’.
He turned to Kensi, his chin tucked down by his chest, and shook her hand without looking at her.
“You’re really pretty,” he said shyly. Kensi grinned, completely charmed.
“Thank you,” she said and he ducked his head again.
“But not as pretty as my mom. She’s the prettiest.”
“Did your mom come with you?” Deeks asked, managing to make the question sound casual. “You look pretty strong, but I’m not sure you can carry this tree without a little help.”
“You’re silly. I came with my mom,” he said with another giggle. Kensi noticed that one of his bottom teeth was missing.
“Do you know where she is?” Kensi asked, crouching a little and Bobby nodded.
“Uh-huh. She’s over there, looking at the little trees. I wanted to get a big tree, but she said they’re too espensive.” He pointed to a section of trees that were decidedly less impressive.
Kensi felt her heart clench as his smile faded a little bit.
“Hey, you can still put presents under a small tree,” Deeks pointed out and Bobby’s grinned returned in full force.
“Santa’s gonna bring me a Spider-Man bike this year!” he exclaimed excitedly. “I guess if it’s too big to go under the tree, he can put it next to the tree.”
“That sounds amazing and I’m super jealous.” Kensi rolled her eyes as they started debating who was the best Avenger.
“We should probably go find your mom before she starts to worry,” Kensi interrupted after a couple minutes.
“I guess...” Bobby sounded a little disappointed, but didn’t resist when Deeks put a guiding hand on his shoulder. They started to walk towards the spot Bobby had indicated.
“Ooh, I think I dropped my phone somewhere,” Deeks said suddenly, patting down his pockets. “I’ll be right back.” Kensi eyed him suspiciously as he turned around and went in the completely opposite direction.
“C’mon, Bobby. I’m sure De-Marty will be back in a minute.”
They found his mother, a woman who looked maybe in her late 20’s, looking a little harried and worried as she craned her head around two medium sized trees. She caught sight of them and ran over, her expression turning to one of relief mixed with exasperation.
“Bobby, I told you to stay close by,” she said, grabbing his shoulders and giving him a quick once over.
“Mommy, this is Kensi! She’s married to a guy with hair like the guy who sings about country roads. And he likes big trees too!” Bobby told her excitedly before Kensi could explain the situation.
“He was just giving me and my husband some of his expert Christmas tree advice,” Kensi clarified.
“Well, thank you for bringing him back.” She hugged Bobby against her side, bending to press a kiss to his head. “What would I do without you? I hope he wasn’t any trouble.”
“Oh no, he was perfectly charming.” Kensi smiled at Bobby, who was fiddling with his mom’s jacket now.
“He’s definitely that,” she agreed with a slightly exasperated smile.
“Ma’am, we have your tree ready,” one of the farm employees interrupted, directing his statement to Bobby’s mother. He pointed several feet away where another employee was carrying a mesh wrapped tree.
“Hey, I think that’s my tree, mommy!” Bobby shouted excitedly.
“No, Bobby, it’s not ours,” she said, resting a restraining hand on his shoulder. She turned to the employee “I think you made a mistake. I didn’t buy a tree yet.”
“No, someone else bought it for you.”
“Who?”
“They want to remain anonymous, but said they saw you checking out that tree and figured it was in the spirit of things to make someone’s Christmas brighter.” He shrugged. Bobby grew steadily more excited and in a few minutes managed to convince his mother than the tree was indeed theirs.
Glancing around, Kensi saw Deeks emerge from the store at the center of the tree farm, two foam cups balanced in one hand as he slipped his wallet back into his pocket. Kensi narrowed her eyes, walking over to him with her arms crossed.
He grinned and offered her a cup.
“Hot chocolate?” She took it, but didn’t take a sip.
“That was a pretty slick move, Mr. Deeks,” she commented. Deeks took a healthy gulp and scrunched his nose.
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about,” he said lightly, looking over at Bobby. He was practically jumping up and down in excitement while two men helped strap the tree to his mom’s car.
“You made that little boy’s day. Possibly his entire Christmas.” Deeks sighed, seeming oddly embarrassed.
“It wasn’t much,” he said with a shrug. “I’ve been that kid, you know? I hated the way it made me feel when we couldn’t afford something. And I know it killed my mom. Now Bobby’s mom doesn’t have to choose between making her son happy and paying the bills. And Santa has somewhere to put that Spiderman bike.”
Kensi wrapped her arms around him, careful not to spill hot chocolate down his back, and leaned up to kiss his lips. Not caring that there were dozens of people surrounding them, she gently cupped his cheek.
“You are such a good man, Marty Deeks,” she told him, overwhelmed with love and affection. He bobbed his head.
“Sometimes.”
“Always.” She shifted back and looped her arm through his. “Now let’s go find you the second biggest tree this place has.”

A Magical Holiday Break
I wrote this mainly for my own amusement and almost decided not to post it, but thought someone might enjoy it so I went with it and here we are. This is my third @densi-mber story and exists in the same timeline as the other two, but it can totally be read on its own.
“Baby, we’re not spending New Year’s Eve in Times Square.” Kensi said for what felt like the 100th time, continuing the argument that had started 2 days ago, as soon as they had been informed that NCIS was giving all the OSP team one week off as holiday vacation.
“Come on Princess, what place is more magical to receive the New Year together than Times Square?” Deeks looked at Kensi with his best puppy eyes and charming smile, hoping to convince her so they could start making travel arrangements.
“Shaggy, you just said the key to this whole situation… any place would be magical as long as we’re together… I just want to receive the New Year with you,” the sincerity and love in her words made his heart flutter and not for the first time, and certainly not for the last, he wondered how he had managed to get so lucky as to have this incredible woman in his life.
But, still there was an argument to win and a decision to be made so he couldn’t let his heart control his actions and needed to keep thinking with his head… at least until they were back in their shared bedroom. “I know that Kensalina, but if we can add a magical scene it would only make the moment even more magical and unforgettable.”
“Deeks, when we’re on a case you usually need to pee every 30 minutes… just imagine in the middle of winter… in New York City… and surrounded by 1 million people.” She looked at him from across their dining table, while she continued to eat her pasta. “It’s a recipe for disaster…” She eventually finished after a huge mouthful of her favorite Deeks’ culinary creation and a swig of her beer.
Deeks concentrated on his meal while he thought of a better argument but Kensi had just made a valid point. His face shined and his eyes took on that brightness they got when he was about to say a joke or tease one of his friends, “we can always use an adult diaper…”
Kensi almost chocked on the serving she was currently devouring and glared at her boyfriend while she took another swig to help fully swallow the offending pasta. “I’m not using an adult diaper…” Seeing the still amused looked in his eyes she knew she had to make her point even clearer, “…and neither are you!”
“You’re such a spoilsport Fern…” Kensi could only laugh at his comment and the pout that appeared on his face after her comment.
“Oh, and you’re such a baby Marty… stop with the pouting and act like the grown-up you’re supposed to be.” She kept laughing even as she said the words, enjoying teasing this man she loved so much.
He just glared at her and pouted even more, almost pointing out that he didn’t like to be called Marty, but knowing she had done it to annoy him and not wanting to give her the satisfaction. So he just decided to continue eating his pasta, while silently still thinking of a way to convince her.
-x-x-x-
The next morning started as the previous night ended… With another argument about their upcoming vacations. “Come on Kens, you know this is the best idea, pleeease?”
“Stop giving me your puppy eyes, they won’t make me change my mind…” Even as she said the words, she reached out to push his bangs away from said eyes, staring at them lovingly and getting lost in their blue depth.
“Then what do you say we do? Enjoy our vacation staying in the same LA and house?” He tried sounding indignant, going for a different approach to persuade her.
“We could still travel, just maybe somewhere close by… That way we can still enjoy a bit of free time and holiday celebration with our moms.”
“Yeah Kens, like that’s exactly what I want to do after our successful breakfast the other day, and dinner this past Sunday turned into little Marty picture time…”
“Oh but those pictures were so cute… I still want a copy of the one you’re wearing nothing but a diaper and the fluffy Santa hat,” she hugged him as she said the words in an attempt to show him that it was not a joke but that she really meant it.
“I’m sure mama is gonna get you a copy of it… and probably of the whole album if you asked, sometimes I think she likes you more than me…” He faked hurt as he said it, emphasizing his point by placing his hand dramatically over his heart.
“Well, can you really blame her? I actually make attempts to meet her while you always want to find an excuse… and you pointed a gun at her boyf… Guy… the first time you met him.” Every time the man was mentioned in an intimate capacity with Roberta, Deeks seem to blow a fuse, so she decided to take the save route and address him by name.
“Kens, you weren’t there… You don’t know how walking into that looked to me….” He was tired of speaking about Guy, his mama or anyone else, and he really just wanted a time for themselves, like the one they spent after going all in…
Just then his eyes took that special brightness and cheerfulness she loved so much, making it clear his crazy mind just had a new idea. “I got it! Let’s still go to NY but instead of staying in the city let’s book a cabin in a different town, what do you think?”
It was impossible to tell him no when his eyes were tinkling like that and when such an adorable and innocent smile was present on his face. “Okay baby, I remember reading of this town called Tarrytown, it’s just a short train ride away from Manhattan, so we can still see and enjoy the city but get back to a cozy cabin at night and… I would like to get back to LA for New Year’s.”
Hearing her words he instantly nodded, and with his adorable smile still present on his face, moved to hug her and kiss her sweetly on the lips, lingering there a second longer and breathing in her scent. He really liked the idea of spending New Year’s in New York, but also understood that given the year they just had, it was important to enjoy those days with family and their NCIS teammates and their moms were just that.
After breaking apart he went to their bedroom to pick up his laptop so they could start looking for a place and making reservations. Finding a place so close to the holidays wasn’t going to be easy, but hopefully one away from the city wouldn’t be as hard or expensive to find. After their conversation about Holiday gifts and saving money for their wedding they had almost decided not to go on vacation at all, but they both agreed the escape was needed and that’s when the discussion to pick a location had started.
It took the couple 45 minutes and a couple of new disagreements but they finally booked their flights and a small one-bedroom cabin north of NYC and close to the train station. They decided to travel early in the morning from LA and late at night from NY so they could enjoy as many days in the city without having to use all their vacations days there. Kensi having convinced her boyfriend to leave a day open so they could meet the moms for another Holiday visit and a day to meet the guys as they declined to go with them when they had been invited to join the trip, preferring to stay in LA and enjoy some calm days.
Holiday plans in motion, the young partners just needed to survive a few more days at work and it would be time for their much needed vacation and relaxing days to enjoy the company they both loved and cherished the most.
-x-x-x-
That morning Kensi and Deeks woke up eager to have a quick breakfast and head straight to the airport, bags already finished the night before, and just needing to add some toiletries and pack their laptops. After about 20 minutes of getting ready they left their home ready for their trip, both feeling sad having to leave Monty behind, but glad that Eric and Nell had agreed to come pick up the mutt later that day and take care of him for the duration of their trip.
They got to the airport with plenty of time to spare and with an excuse of going to the restroom Deeks stopped at a donut place to get some treats for his girlfriend to surprise and indulge her on the plane.
The young couple spent the flight snuggled together, laughing and looking at each other as if they were the only other person in the world… And in that moment, they really were. They ate their donuts, and laughed even more when Deeks jokingly smeared a bunch of powdered sugar on Kensi’s forehead, resulting in her covering his nose in strawberry jelly and excitedly screaming that she was flying with Rudolf. For anyone looking from a distance, the young couple might have appeared drunk, but in reality they were only overindulging in love and the peace that these days, away from it all, brought them.
“Come on baby, baggage claim is that way,” Kensi couldn’t help but smile at the pure wonder in Deeks’ voice as he signaled for the way to go. He looked like a kid, and she wondered how many vacations like this he had been able to enjoy during his childhood.
“Slow down Shaggy, I’m coming.” She was practically running behind him as she said the words, struggling to catch up to him and not crash with any of the other ton of people walking around them. New York City was surely a busy place this time of the year.
It took them around 3 hours to finally arrive to their cabin, having to wait for a prior flight before reclaiming their luggage and then awkwardly discovering that all NYC taxi drivers didn’t know how to get to little towns north of the city, so eventually deciding to head over to the train station instead. Kensi had wanted to rent a car but Deeks succeeded in convincing her to just enjoy these days as a tourists and not worry about traffic, parking and the other things that came with driving in the Big Apple.
“Oh wow, this place is awesome… And look at this tub.” Now it was Kensi’s voice the one full of wonder as she took in the sight before her and especially the hot tub located in the back, already thinking of all the things they would do there.
That night the couple decided to stay in their little town, and just left the comfort of the cabin to have some dinner and quickly came back… to escape from the cold, and find warmth in each other. Also finding a lot of help in the fireplace and hot tub that the cabin offered.
-x-x-x-
The next morning came quicker than any of them wanted, and with it started their 3 days for tourism and relaxation before they had to fly back on the fourth.
Combining both of their interests they first decided to head over to Union Square where the Wonder Twins had recommended they checked out their Holiday Market. As soon as they got out of the subway, they were surprised by the enormity of the skyscrapers and the simplicity of the little plaza where the market was located. They shopped a little, buying some homemade treats to eat that night at the cabin and some special handmade souvenirs to take to their teammates and moms back home. They even got one for Mosley, hoping to stay in her good graces and never have her try to, again, send Deeks back to LAPD.
Leaving the market they decided to walk 5th street until the point it reached Central Park, stopping at various places to look at the characteristic Manhattan Attractions. They took pictures of the Empire State, Flatiron Building, Rockefeller Center and many other places in between.
If asked later, both would easily agree their favorite part of the day was the ice rink they found in one of their stops, both instantly transported to another frozen lake 3 years prior. They held each other more closely after that, both remembering the past 7 years of their lives and how a MMA gym, a girl name Tracy and a boy name Jason had changed the course of both their lives forever. And how ultimately passing through another girl named Melissa and then Fern, and a boy named Justin and then Max, they had ended in a couple name Kensi Blye and Marty Deeks… One that would hopefully share the same surname, soon.
They got back to their cabin later that night, tired but content in the success of their day and ready to enjoy another night in each other’s arms.
-x-x-x-
The next 2 days of their trip proceeded in a similar way. They woke up tangled in each other, happy in the comfort and warm the other provided. They showered together, and almost every morning ended up taking longer than expected as said activity involved a lot more than just showering.
The first of those days, they decided to walk Central Park, especially as Deeks wanted to visit Strawberry Fields, the part of the park with the Imagine memorial dedicated to John Lennon. As they were leaving to continue their walk, the young man turned up to look at the sky, and Kensi silently wondered if he had wanted to visit the memorial for his father and if maybe that gesture had been dedicated to him. The rest of the day involved more walking, pictures, laughs, a nice dinner and getting back to their cabin to enjoy another night in the hot tub and then spread in a blanket in front of the fireplace.
The last full day they would be spending in New York passed by quicker than any of the others. They woke up a little later than expected after the previous’ nights activities had lasted more than planned. But still it left them enough time to go to the city. That day they visited the area of Battery Park to look, at least, from distance at the Statue of Liberty, before walking to the 9/11 Memorial and paying their respects to the fallen heroes and civilians of that day.
When time for lunch came, Kensi insisted they took the subway to a special place she wanted to visit. Not totally sure but not wanting to deny his girl anything Deeks agreed and was completely surprised when they reached their destination. It was the original bakery that invented the Cronut and he couldn’t feel more love for his girlfriend than he felt at that moment. His mind, instead of being invaded by darkness and memories of past nightmares, was full of the love and admiration he felt for Kensi, also the pride he felt for himself as he had managed to, for the most part, leave those demons behind.
They went into the bakery hand-in-hand, and Deeks’ disappointment at learning the Cronuts usually were all sold out before noon, quickly evaporated as he learned that Kensi had called the day they booked the trip to reserve a half-dozen for them; using her NCIS influence to make it happen. He hugged her and whispered in her hear a quick thank you, along with sweet promises of things to come later that night.
Cronuts in hand and hearts full, the couple left the bakery to get back to the train station so they could make their way back to their town. They enjoyed a nice dinner together and eventually ended up like all previous nights, just this time, enjoying some cronuts along with the heat of the fireplace and each other.
-x-x-x-
On the last day of their trip, they decided to stay in the town and walk a bit down Main Street instead of going back to Manhattan and risk losing their flight later that night.
The walk lasted less than expected as both man and woman wanted to get back to the cabin as soon as possible to enjoy some last moments in their favorite hut tub and in each other’s arms. They whispered sweet nothings, promises of better times and reassurances of love as they soaked their joined bodies in the hot water, letting the action melt all their fears, doubts, and old nightmares away.
For them, this trip signaled more than just a vacation but it was really a matter of leaving the last year behind. Not only what had happened to them, but also to Sam, Owen, and to their family as a whole. They had needed the days to finally breathe and enjoy the mere fact that they were still alive and, more importantly, together. Eventually, they would have to go back to the realities and uncertainties of their lives and jobs but at least these few days had given them a little respite from all that.
They got to the airport feeling fresh and recharged, as always happy to be with each other, but also eager to get back to the rest of their family and hoping for a perfect New Year along with them, and hopefully an even better 2018, given all they had lost in 2017…

@densi-mber @ryan9098 prompt: “The moms share holiday baby stories of Kensi & Deeks with the couple.”
“Are we sure we are up for this? That was an unbelievably tough day and now we want to sit through dinner with our moms?” Kensi asks as she gets into the drivers seat of the Audi.
“As much as I would love to go home and find that Thai take out on the way home, we both know neither my mom or yours will let us get out of this dinner, and our mothers are at our  house of residence so there’s really no getting out of it.” Deeks gets into the passenger seat and buckles his seatbelt.
“You, uh.....Let them use our house.”
“Well, Julia’s kitchen is still being remodeled and my mom’s kitchen doesn’t have a gas burner and she insisted on using one.... And it was just hard to say no.” Deeks turns his face to look out the window and mutters under his breath. “And they’re staying the night.”
“Of course they are.” Kensi laughed as she puts her hand on his shoulder. “You want to know what’s funny: we’ve been shot at four times today, once with an actual assault rifle, quite literally dodged two bombs today and I saved your ass from getting kidnapped by terrorists again. And the scariest thing, is going to have dinner with our moms!”
Deeks laughed as he he grabbed the hand on his shoulder, and lightly kissed the back of her hand. “That is the most accurate statement I have ever heard in my life. It really won’t be that bad. Let’s go partner. Let’s go face the real problem of the day.”
“3...2...1..” Kensi says as she puts the key in the deadbolt and turns the door knob.
“Julia! They’re home!” Roberta says as she pokes her head out from the kitchen. “Marty, baby, come give me a hug.”
“Hi, Mama.” Deeks says as he wraps his himself around his mom.
“Kens!” Julia says as she does the same.
Roberta huffs and Deeks disentangles himself from her embrace. “What is it mom?”
“You.... Smell, like ash and gunpowder.” Roberta says. Julia shakes her head too.
“I will agree with that. What kind of trouble did you two get into today?”
Kensi shakes her head. “I am going to go take a shower.” Deeks turns his head and gives her a help me look. They both know their mothers don’t love their line of work, and after days like today, they are both going to end up getting the ‘you two should think about changing your line of work, we want grandkids’ talk, and the last time, Deeks bailed on Kensi, and it was obvious she was returning the favor. “Honey, why don’t you tell our moms about our day and we can eat when I get back.”
“Sure, partner.” Deeks grumbles as he reaches behind to his back. “Here, take this, put it up.” He pulls out his gun and hands it to Kensi. Julia and Roberta shook their heads in response.
“I hate that you two play with those, things, like they are toys.” Julia says as she walks into the kitchen.
“Me too.” Roberta agrees as she follows.
“And that’s why the second bomb went off and we were just behind the Audi.” Deeks said as he pushed his empty plate in front of him. “Then someone was coming from about, 3 o’clock and next thing I knew, Kensi had shot three in his chest.”
Kensi chuckled at the memory. “Saving your ass, yet again. Daily job keeping tabs on this one. But we were much closer to this bomb, which is why we smelled like ash and gunpowder.”
“Oh my god.” Julia said as she clutched her glass of wine. “I knew your jobs were dangerous, but is every day like this?”
Deeks and Kensi half laughed at that answer, and Kensi went to open her mouth.
“You know..... I think I am better off not knowing.” Julia said. Kensi grabbed her mom’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “You are definitely your father’s daughter.”
Kensi squeezed her mom’s hand a little tighter and gave her a smile. “I sure am.”
“Deeks, Donald would have loved you... I just, thought you should know that. Kensi, do you remember when you were about, six or seven, and it was Christmas Eve?
“Oh, god. Mom... Not this story.” Kensi said as she rolled her eyes.
“Oh no. Please elaborate.”
“It was the first time he took her to the shooting range. I didn’t really want them to go, but I had to wrap the presents. So I was just aggravated enough I didn’t care where Donald was going to take her, so I allowed it. Next thing I know, I’m getting a call from the local ER saying that Kensi was getting six stitches in her back, and twelve on her elbow.”
Deeks laughed.
“Donald wasn’t letting her shoot, and she got bored, he wasn’t keeping an eye on her, so she walked around the building and climbed a tree to watch, ‘from a sniper’s view point’ she had said. And when she heard her father’s voice calling out.... She rapidly tried to get down from the tree, but fell about 5 feet to the ground. Neither gave me a heart attack.”
“So those are where those scars are from. She never would tell me.” Deeks said as he smiled and gave Kensi a daring look.
“Not one of my finer moments.” Kensi half laughed as her face turned slightly red.
Roberta laughed and took a sip of her wine. “That’s as bad as that Christmas morning when Marty was about 4 and got his big head stuck in a dog door. I had to call the fire department and it took about 5 hours to get him out of there.”
“Oh my god.” Kensi laughed. “That’s why you have that scar right behind your right ear, isn’t it!”
Deeks nodded as he took a sip of his beer. “I have a feeling we just opened a can of worms, Kens.”
“Well, we survived.” Kensi said as she reached over and turned the light off.
“I have never had my mother tell such embarrassing stories.” Deeks grunted in response. “I’m still surprised you want to marry me.”
“Mine weren’t much better!” Kensi laughed as she nuzzled into his side. “Let’s just make sure our kids have doubly embarrassing stories, ok?”
Deeks pulled her closer, kissing her forehead. “I think that can be arranged.”

A/N: Although this page and event is dedicated to Densi, since the 250th episode airs tonight, we thought it was only appropriate to post a team fic for this momentous occasion. Happy first day of Densi-mber!
Based on today’s writing prompt.

“Don’t drop your left, Babe!” Kensi called out from the sidelines as Sam and Deeks sparred in the middle of the gym. It was mostly unnecessary at this point, but she couldn’t help herself. Encouraging Deeks was second nature by now and part of the game.
“C’mon partner, you can hit harder than that,” Callen said and Sam shot him a glare as he danced back from Deeks and then lunged forward. Deeks blocked him with his forearm, landing a punch to Sam’s upper chest. “It’s certainly different that the first time they fought each other. Back then Deeks didn’t stand a chance.”
She turned her attention back to Deeks, analyzing his movements. His form was definitely way better, his hits had more force behind them and after all these years he knew Sam’s style. It also didn’t hurt that Deeks had a more muscular physique than when he’d first joined the team. She spent a little more time than absolutely necessary to examine the flex and pull of said muscles as he attempted to pin Sam’s arm behind his back.
“Deeks wasn’t that bad,” she said eventually, partially out of loyalty, partially out of competitiveness. Callen snorted.
“Sam knocked him out cold.”
“That’s because it wasn’t an even match. If Deeks had as much muscle then as he–”
“Yeah, I think we all know how much you like Deeks’ muscles,” Callen interrupted dryly and Kensi made an outraged noise.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I saw you checking him out. Again.”
“I was not,” Kensi protested as Sam and Deeks wandered over, both breathing heavily. Wiping sweat of his face, Deeks nudged her shoulder and asked,
“What are you guys talking about?”
“Your muscles,” Callen answered which earned an unsurprised look from Sam.
“I should have known,” he said. Deek nudged Kensi’s shoulder again, grinning.
“The question is, who started the conversation?” he asked, winking at Callen. Before things could descend into complete chaos, Kensi got things back on track.
“Actually, we were remembering the first you guys fought each other.”
“Oh yeah, good times. Sam knocked my lights out and then you guys proceeded to steal my case,” Deeks recalled as he grabbed his water bottle and downed half of it at once.
“And who’d have thought that we’d still be have your scrawny butt around ten years later,” Sam added cheerfully, roughly patting Deeks on the back.
“I think Kensi would argue that it’s a well-muscled butt,” Callen felt the need to point out.
“Should I be concerned that you’ve been checking out my butt?” Eric chose that moment to walk in and asked,
“Is this a bad time to interrupt?” Based on his vaguely disturbed expression, he’d heard at least part of the conversation. Kensi grabbed Deeks’ arm and physically removed him from the area before he could make things more awkward for Eric.
“Nope, you have perfect timing,” she said firmly, pushing an unresisting Deeks out of the gym.
***
They were in the bullpen later that evening, while Callen and Deeks finished up some reports. The discussion of their early days as a team had continued throughout the day; both Sam and Callen had proved to be surprisingly sentimental about the whole thing. They’d taken turns recalling various incidents throughout their careers before and after the rest had joined. At some point Nell and Eric had wandered down too and joined the conversation.
“You know, since we’re being all nostalgic today, I was thinking about what things were like before Deeks and Nell were a part of the team,” Kensi said, looking over at Deeks with a fond smile.
“It was a lot more peaceful for one thing,” Sam commented dryly, glancing pointedly at Kensi and Deeks. “There was a less drama and the chances of walking in on someone kissing was almost negligible.”
“And you guys never let me drive,” Kensi added under her breath. Nell, sitting on the edge of Callen’s desk, was looking wistful.
“I remember my first day working here. I was terrified. I told myself that I was going to do everything perfectly and be the best tech analyst the Office of Special Projects had ever seen. And then I’m pretty sure I spent most of the day rambling and making Eric hate me.”
“I didn’t hate you,” Eric protested from beside her, apparently horrified by the thought. Nell rolled her eyes at his loyalty, although she also looked somewhat pleased.
“Oh you definitely did not like those first couple weeks,” she countered. When Eric started to protest again, she raised a small hand in a halting gesture. “Which I completely understand. I kept cutting you off and trying so hard to prove myself that even I am retroactively annoyed.”
“And none of that matters now because I love you more than anything,” Eric said sweetly and leaned over for a kiss.
“Before this gets any cheesier than it already is,” Callen said, looking vaguely amused by the display going on in front of him. “Didn’t you also throw Hetty a massive birthday party? When we specifically told you that you shouldn’t.”
“I don’t know that you ever said I shouldn’t throw her a party,” Nell hedged. “Besides, she loved it.”
“Yeah, I’m not so sure about that. I’m think Hetty was so sick of hiring new analysts she was determined to like you no matter what.”
“That is not true!” Kensi objected, looking outraged on Nell’s behalf.
“Even if it is true, like Eric said, it doesn’t matter now,” Deeks pointed out, sharing a friendly smile with Nell. “Because it was one of the best decisions Hetty ever made. This place wouldn’t be the same without you.”
“Oh Deeks, that is so sweet,” Nell murmured, placing a hand over her heart.
“He’s right,” Sam agreed. “Even though I might not have seen it at first, all of you have made this team better and I can’t imagine if I didn’t have you guys around me every day.” Nell made a sound remarkably like a sniff after Sam’s impromptu speech and Kensi reached over to squeeze his shoulder.
“We love you too.”
“Ditto,” Nell said.
“It’s your turn.” Sam nodded in Callen’s direction, arms crossed expectantly and a hint of a smirk pulling at his lips.
“My turn for what?”
“To say something nice. You’re the only one who hasn’t yet.” Callen looked like he might protest, but then shrugged.
“Fine.” He let out a weighty sigh and confided, “I actually liked Deeks’ oyster beer.” This was met with a chorus of groans and protests.
“And on that note, why don’t we take this conversation to the Squid and Dagger,” Deeks suggested. “This time, I promise there will not be any seafood involved.” There were several sighs of relief at this news.
As they packed up to go, Hetty appeared in the doorway, hesitating in a way that was most un-Hetty like.
“Is that an open invitation, Mr. Deeks?”
“Of course,” he answered with honest surprise. “You’re always welcome.”
“Wonderful,” she said, clapping her hands together and somehow taking instant control of the impromptu get together. “Since we’re reminiscing, did I ever tell you about the time Mr. Hanna crashed his first Challenger?” Sam laughed nervously and touched Hetty’s arm.
“C’mon Hetty, I don’t think anyone wants to hear that story.”
“I do,” Nell piped up immediately while Eric nodded eagerly. Sam ignored them and began futilely trying to usher Hetty out of the bullpen.
“You told me that accident wasn’t your fault,” Callen commented, his eyes narrowed at his partner. “You said the other car crashed into you.”
“It wasn’t my fault,” Sam insisted as Hetty said,
“Well, yes, in a way I suppose that is true. A car did crash into Sam…but only after he smashed into a parked minivan.” Hetty continued the story as they left the mission, much to Sam’s dismay and everyone else’s amusement.
By the time they made it to the Squid and the Dagger, Callen was still ribbing Sam. Deeks disappeared into the storeroom to the grab the promised beer while the rest of the team found seats at the bar.
“Can we please talk about something else?” Sam begged after another round of jokes at his expense. “Like how nice it is to finally have this team all in one place again.”
“I will definitely drink to that,” Kensi said as Deeks reappeared with a crate of bottles.
“Hey, you guys better not have started toasting without me,” he said jokingly, starting to pass around the beer. Callen took one immediately while Sam and Nell hesitated. Deeks rolled his eyes as he bumped Kensi’s shoulder to get her attention and passed her a bottle. “I promise this beer is fresh, chilled and definitely not fishy. It comes from a local, award winning brewery.”
“It better be. I still have nightmares about that last one,” Sam said darkly with a disgusted shake of his head.
“It honestly wasn’t that bad,” Callen insisted.
“You have no taste buds,” Eric said with a horrified expression. Deeks had finished distributing the beers and went to stand beside Kensi, leaning against the bar.
Hetty cleared her throat and stood up, raising her hand in a way that demanded attention.
“Since we are all gathered her together, and thankfully in one piece for once, I would like to toast to this team. I am eternally grateful for the work you do each and every day. To the Office of Special Projects, may we be together for ten years more.” She ended by lifting her glass in the air and everyone followed suit and took a drink.
“And to the members of this team who are no longer with us,” Deeks added and they drank again. There was a moment of contemplative silence and then Callen said, frowning down at his bottle,
“You know, I kind of miss the oyster beer. It had an interesting muskiness.”
“You are ridiculous,” Sam said with a chuckle.
“I’ve got more in the back if you want it,” Deeks offered. Hetty set her half-empty bottle on the bar and declared,
“I believe that is my cue to leave.”
“Thank you for coming, Hetty,” Kensi said graciously as Hetty gathered her belongings.
“I wouldn’t have missed it. Oh, and Mr. Deeks, please do not let Mr. Callen have more than one of those beers,” she added over her shoulder with a delicate shudder.
“Yes, Mom!” Deeks called out as she left and the others spread around the bar, Callen in search of more musky beer. Kensi wrapped her arm around his waist, leaning into his side, and sighed contentedly.
“When you first told me you wanted to buy a bar, I thought you were crazy,” she started, and Deeks snorted.
“I know, I thought you were going to kill me when I took the team here the first time.”
“Mm, but now having the team here for drinks are some of my favorite nights.”
“Mine too,” he murmured. He cupped the back of her head and leaned down to kiss her. Who knew if they would last another ten years as a team, but he knew they would be their own weird version of a family forever.

Christmas Miracles
Tumblr media
A/N: I decided to start off the celebration on a high note for Densi so interpreted this prompt creatively.
***
“Hey, we’ve gotten a lot better at this,” Kensi observed as she threaded a new strand of multicolored lights Deeks. He wound them around the middle section of the Christmas tree, moving aside a branch of two.
“I told you it helps when the lights aren’t in a tangled ball,” he teased.
“One time.” Kensi held up a finger for a second, shaking her head. “I didn’t follow the “Marty Deeks Protocol for Storing Christmas Lights” one time and now I will never hear the end of it.”
“I never did get those undone. I wonder what Callen did with them.” Deeks frowned for a second, presumably contemplating the thought of Callen decorating a nonexistent tree.
“I’m pretty sure he threw them away the minute he got home.”
“That’s rude,” Deeks said lightly, surveying his work with a critical eye. “Hm, that’s a little unbalanced.”
Stepping back, Kensi waited while he rearranged some of the lights just so. Based on previous years, Kensi knew that he would fiddle with them until he thought they looked perfectly scattered without leaving any large gaps.
While he finished with that, Kensi started digging through the ornament boxes. Last year, between trying to move, Deeks being at FLETC, and her own faltering mental health, Kensi hadn’t felt much like decorating. At one point, just the thought of putting up a tree and pretending to be cheery made her feel nauseous.
Thankfully, while all their worries weren’t magically gone, she felt in a much better frame of mind to celebrate this year. Deeks seemed in better spirits too without FLETC hanging over his head.
She pulled out a couple of large, bulbous green, red, and purple ornaments that had been a present from Deeks’ mom. They were almost pretty, in a garish kind of way. Kensi wasn’t totally convinced that Roberta hadn’t given them as a gag gift.
“Hey, where do you want to put your mom’s ornaments?” she asked, turning with one dangling in each hand. Deeks sucked in a deep breath as he scrunched up his face in consideration. They came across the same question every single year.
“Near the bottom so they don’t break any branches, but not so low that my mom thinks we’re dissing her gift. And definitely not towards the back since last year she accused us of hiding them,” he decided. “But not so obvious that if Nell and Eric happen to visit, it makes them wonder where their ornament is.”
“Oh yeah, definitely not.” Kensi shuddered as the image of a white horse with a black and neon pink details, green hair, and a psychotic grin came to mind. “That thing gives me nightmares.”
“I swear Nell bought it just for our reactions. She always gets this slightly evil expression when she mentions it.”
“Definitely wouldn’t put it past her.” Sighing, she grabbed a couple more ornaments and passed them up to Deeks. “We’ll just stick the crazy horse behind the vintage elves from my mom and if anyone else tries to give us decorations, they’re going straight into the goodwill pile.”
“Sounds perfectly reasonable,” Deeks said and though she couldn’t see his face from this angle, she was sure he was smiling. “Somehow I don’t think we have to worry about Callen buying us any kind of decoration.”
They were just about done hanging ornaments, when Kensi’s phone buzzed with an incoming call.
“Oh, it’s Sandra, our adoption coordinator,” she told Deeks, brows furrowing. As far as she knew, they’d completed all the paperwork, interviews, and other requirements to be considered for adoption, but maybe they’d missed something. She caught Deeks’ eye as she accepted the call, hoping that there weren’t any issues.
“Hi, this is Kensi. Yes, we did. Really? No, thank you for calling.” Deeks gave her a searching look as she listened to the women on the other end of the line.
“Kens,” he hissed, but she held up her hand, concentrating on everything Sandra said. “Right. Yes, we can come down tomorrow. Thank you so much.”
“Kensi, what the hell is going on?” Deeks demanded the second she hung up. A plain blue bulb hung loosely between his thumb and forefinger, apparently forgotten. “Did we accidentally check “divorced”or something on the paperwork?”
“Um, no.” Kensi shook her head and chuckled incredulously. “Sandra said they have a placement for us. She wants us to go to the adoption center to meet him tomorrow.”
“You’re kidding.”
“No.”
“Holy crap,” Deeks breathed, sounding dazed. He looked just as shocked as she felt. He reached for her and Kensi fell against his chest, gripping his shoulders. “Is this really happening?”
“I think so. It seems impossible,” Kensi said, starting to feel a little giddy. “It’s been so long and Sandra had said we should expect to wait at least a couple months before we heard anything.”
“This is crazy.” Deeks shook his head again, eyes moving around the room, focusing on the mantle above their electric fireplace. “Crap, we’re going to need to buy another Christmas stocking,” he muttered giddily. “And presents.”
“Oh my god, you’re ridiculous,” Kensi gasped, kissing him with tears of joy leaking down her cheeks. “And I’ve never been happier.”
***
A/N: So, as you might have concluded, we have a crazy horse ornament that my mom got in Mexico when she was a girl. We put it on the tree every year. Mom insists.

A Surprise Visit
-------------------------------------------------------------
‘Oh my gosh!! I’m so happy to see you both!’ Nell exclaimed when she answered the door.
Kensi to hug Nell, and Deeks went to hug Eric.
‘You told her, didn’t you?’ He whispered.
‘I’m terrible at keeping secrets like this, you knew that!’ Eric whispered back.
‘Well whatever, just glad to see you, man!’
They toured the whole house, which was basically a mansion.
‘This whole place is incredible!’ Deeks said, amazed.
‘You think that’s great, you should see this epic ‘man cave’ that I had built!’ Eric replied.
While Eric showed Deeks his ‘man cave’, Kensi and Nell talked.
‘So, how have you been?’ Kensi asked.
‘Been great! You?’ Nell replied.
‘Difficult. Deeks and i have been having a lot of issues with trying to have a family.’
‘I’m very sorry to hear that.’
‘Yeah.’ Then she noticed an odd looking piece of luggage.
‘Isn’t that one of Hetty’s bags?’ Kensi asked.
‘Yeah. She left it when she stayed here for a few weeks.’ Nell responded.
‘She was here?! For how long and why?’
‘She just randomly showed up 1 night looking for a place to stay. She didn’t say the real reason why as to why she wanted to stay, but I think it had something to do with some kind of mission in another country.’
‘Well, she was in Syria earlier this year, maybe that has something to do with it. Did she seem to be okay?’
‘She was definitely happy to see me and Eric, but I think that was it. She seemed, sad, shaken, and probably lonely. Whatever it is she’s been doing, it’s probably been bad enough to give her bad dreams that make her cry out in her sleep for a couple of nights.’ Nell said.
‘Oh dear!’
‘I don’t mind calming her down, I actually had to do it a few times when we saved her from Vietnam, but this time, it seemed different. Like something was really shaking her up, something worse then traumatic memories. I tried asking, but she kept saying ‘classified’. Nell said, worried.
Kensi was going to ask more, but then Deeks and Eric came back.
After dinner, Kensi told Deeks what Nell told her.
‘That sounds really worrisome. What would shake up such a tough person worse then traumatic memories?’ Deeks asked.
‘I don’t know! Maybe she’s being hunted? Or she’s hunting someone and something bad happened? Either way, I think we should try to find her when we get back home. Because this all sounds like she’ll need help sooner then later.’ Kensi replied, concerned.
‘Well, until then, we can enjoy our stay at this incredible place! Have you seen how many arcade machines are in this place?!’
‘Did you see the bathrooms in this place?! Makes me wonder how they keep this place clean, or why they even bother leaving!’

Secret Santa
---------------------------------------------------------------
‘You want me to hide your Secret Santa gift for Kensi, why?’ Hetty asked.
‘Because 1, I can’t hide it around the house, 2, I don’t really trust anyone else on the team to hide it.’ Deeks replied.
‘Well, all right. I know a good hiding place.’
The next day
‘You want me to hide your Secret Santa gift for Mr. Deeks, why?’ Hetty asked.
‘Because I can’y hide it around the house and I don’t really trust anyone else on the team to hide it.’ Kensi replied.
‘That’s odd. That’s the exact same excuse Mr. Deeks gave me.’ Hetty thought. ‘Is there really no one else you can trust?’
‘No. Can you hide it or not?’
The day of the Secret Santa gift reveal
‘Soooo Hetty, where’s our gifts?’ Deeks asked.
‘They’re right here.’ Then Hetty opened a big bag revealing a lot more gifts.
‘Uhhhh Hetty, that’s a lot of gifts.’ Kensi pointed out, confused.
‘Oh your gifts are in here, along with everyone else’s on the team. Because apparently, no one trusts anyone but me to hide their gifts for these gift exchanges. A couple of gifts is nice, but when it’s everyone else on the team, that’s a weird and a bit annoying pattern.’ Hetty replied, annoyed.
‘So you’re saying that we shouldn’t use you to hide gifts anymore?’ Deeks asked.
‘A couple of gifts are nice, but this bag got so big it wouldn’t fit in my hiding spot! I had to sneak it into a hidden spot in the burn room, which wasn’t that easy because of how heavy it got! Am I really the only person who can be trusted with a secret gift?’
‘Uhhhhhhhh.’
‘Let me guess, everyone else is either a blabbermouth, or cracks very easily under interrogation?’ Hetty asked.
‘Kind of.’ Deeks awkwardly replied.
‘SIGH. Well, here’s you and Miss Blye’s gifts. And next time, try not to use me for ALL of your gift hiding, because as hard as it is to believe, I DO have limited hiding space!’
Then she walked off with the rest of the presents.
‘Well that was really awkward.’ Kensi said. Then she opened her present. ‘Oooh, I love this band! These CD’s are supposed to be really hard to find, how did you find this?’
‘Online auction, it was very intense.’ Then Deeks opened his gift. ‘A For Dummies book? Sweet!’
‘I didn’t really know what to get you, and you mentioned something once about how you enjoyed those how-to books.’
‘Well, thank you very much, Fern!’ Then they hugged.
‘Merry Christmas, Deeks!’
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought it’d be really funny if it turned out no one on the team trusted anyone but Hetty to hide their secret presents. For Day 6 of @densi-mber

Making Cookies
------------------------------------------
‘Mmm. Something smells good!’ Deeks said, noticing the yummy smell in the kitchen.
‘Yeah! I’m making cookies for the office Christmas party.’ Kensi replied, taking a trey out of the oven.
‘You sure that’s a good idea? Didn’t you give everyone food poisoning last year?’
Awkward chuckle. ‘Not gonna happen this year! Hetty gave me a good cookie recipe.’
‘And you’re sure you’re following it right?’ Deeks asked.
‘Deeks, I’ve been carefully looking at this this piece of paper all day, checking and double checking each step! Trust me, I know what I’m doing.’ Kensi replied.
‘Okay okay! I believe you. Can I lick the dough bowl?
‘Yes, just lick it and scram so I can work!’
That evening
‘Well, only 1 way to know for sure that these cookies won’t poison everyone. And that’s to eat 1.’ Deeks said, looking at all the finished cookies.
‘Well (grabbing a cookie), here goes nothing.’ Kensi replied.
At the office Christmas party
‘Just so we’re clear, we’re not going to end up spending all day next to the toilet if we eat these? Because taking care of Hetty while also being sick yourself is not fun! Noticing Hetty’s dirty look. ‘No offense.’ Callen asked.
‘Not to worry! We ate a couple of these and we’re still fine.’ Deeks replied.
‘Sounds like a trap.’ Sam remarked.
‘Guys, it’s not a trap! Hetty gave me a good recipe. Tell them, Hetty!’ Kensi chimed in.
‘She’s right. I say we try 1. And if I get sick again, I know who will be my nurse again!’ Hetty replied.
‘Oh please don’t get sick again!’ Callen pleaded in his head.
Everyone had a cookie, and thankfully, no one got sick the next day.

Comfort
------------------------------------------------
At work
‘Rough day today.’ Deeks remarked.
‘You’re telling me.’ Kensi replied, unhappy.
‘So, should we do something tonight? Or just go to bed hoping that tomorrow is a better day?’
‘No. I have a movie that we can watch tonight, if you feel like it.’
At home
‘People seriously love all these Hallmark movies?’ Deeks asked.
‘Yes. They love the warm feels it gives them’ Kensi replied.
‘Well, I guess I can see why. What got you into them?’
‘Channel flipping 1 night’.
About halfway through the movie, Kensi fell asleep on Deeks shoulder.
‘Awwww.’ He thought.

For Day 11 of @densi-mber (and yeah. I snuck in my love for Hallmark movies here. 🤭)
